Het IEA is verworden tot een lobbyorganisatie voor de oliemaatschappijen

Oil Change is een petitie begonnen tegen het feit dat het IEA (International Energy Agency, of: het Internationaal Energieagentschap) is verworden tot een lobbyorgaan van de oliemaatschappijen……. De IEA is een intergouvernementele organisatie, met vooral westerse landen als lid, deze westerse landen belijden met de mond duurzaamheid tijdens klimaattoppen althans als de pers aanwezig mag zijn, echter achter gesloten deuren doet men het tegenovergestelde, lees het volgende over het waanzinnige beleid van de IEA:

We leven in een tijd dat we alles op alles moeten zetten om zo snel mogelijk minstens van onze olieafhankelijkheid moeten afkomen, althans als we willen dat de temperatuur aan het eind van deze eeuw, niet minstens met 6 graden Celsius zal zijn gestegen, waardoor bijvoorbeeld laag gelegen land onbewoonbaar zal worden…….. (het is overigens maar de vraag of de temperatuurstijging nog zover afgeremd kan worden dat we onder die stijging van 6 graden Celsius kunnen blijven, dit gezien de vele cumulatieve effecten die nu al optreden, een aantal deskundigen zegt dan ook dat het klimaatkantelpunt al is gepasseerd…..)

De IEA laat bij voortduring weten dat we alle vormen van fossiele brandstof nodig zullen hebben om tot een maatschappij te komen die energieneutraal moet draaien…… Alsof je zegt dat je de wereld moet vernietigen om vrede te bewerkstelligen….. (al lijkt het buitenlandbeleid van de VS wel erg op deze vergelijking….)
De IEA zorgt ervoor dat er ook de komende jaren nog steeds fors zal worden geïnvesteerd in de winning van fossiele brandstoffen, daar moet een eind aan komen. Lees en teken de petitie ajb en zegt het voort! Overigens wat betreft petities, steeds meer mensen zeggen dat deze zinloos zijn, echter vergis je niet, men vindt het in de top van bedrijven en organisaties als de IEA allesbehalve fijn dat grote aantallen mensen tekenen tegen smeerpijperij van hun bedrijf/organisatie en dat dit ook nog eens wordt verbonden aan de verdere vernieling van de wereld! (zie hoe zenuwachtig men werd van Greta Thunberg!)

De volgende petitie is zoals gezegd van Oil Change en zou volgens de tekst al ingeleverd moeten zijn, echter je kan nog steeds tekenen en hoe meer mensen dat doen hoe beter!

Tell the IEA to stop giving cover to Big Oil and Gas

We have decades of history showing this is a bad idea. Fossil fuel executives have no interest in taking this crisis seriously and have spent billions trying to delay action.

Fatih Birol, the head of the IEA, closed the event insisting that we need all fuels and all technologies and that we simply don’t have the “luxury” to exclude any of them. This is a dangerous narrative at a time when science is clear that we need an urgent and dramatic transformation of our energy systems.

While the IEA waxes poetic about the urgency of climate action, they are providing critical cover that justifies and enables massive new fossil fuel investments and production.

The IEA tends to be the go-to energy modellers for financial and energy decision makers, so the fact that the central scenario in their widely read World Energy Outlook (WEO) tracks towards 3°C of warming really is pushing us towards climate catastrophe. Even their climate scenario hits net zero 20 years too late according to the best available science.

But the IEA is feeling the heat. With mounting pressure (including from you!) to #FixTheWEO we know we’re breaking through. The IEA is a critical lynchpin in decision making on the future of energy but it is not comfortable being in the spotlight – which makes your engagement all the more powerful.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner let’s send a clear message to the IEA today calling on them to end this toxic relationship with the corporations that are wrecking our climate.

The IEA sabotages climate progress: Time to #FixTheWEO

Last week, we shared how the little-known but highly influential International Energy Agency (IEA) is providing cover for the fossil fuel industry’s expansion plans. But it gets worse. Not only is the IEA captured by Big Oil and Gas, it is also making it harder for countries to take serious climate action.

The IEA’s most widely read analysis is sabotaging climate action. This needs to stop.

The IEA is an intergovernmental organization. It’s members are countries – mostly wealthy countries from the Global North – and it is supposed to be accountable to its membership.
But, instead of helping countries figure out a path to keep warming to 1.5˚C, the IEA is upholding the status quo and giving fossil fuel companies the cover they need to keep exploring for new oil and gas.

The IEA’s so-called Sustainable Development Scenario (SDS) is sometimes held up as being climate friendly, but it is filled with risky assumptions about future technologies and would allow for billions of dollars in new, near-term investment into fossil fuels
.

Tell the IEA that it needs to develop an ambitious and transparent 1.5˚C scenario – and it needs to make that the focus of the World Energy Outlook.

Next week, the IEA will release the 2019 World Energy Outlook. Let’s make sure the IEA hears our call to stop sabotaging action on climate change.

Oliemaatschappijen hebben geen belang bij het afremmen van de klimaatverandering, het is dan ook te zot voor woorden dat zij keer op keer mogen deelnemen aan klimaattoppen en daar werkelijk een stem hebben, een stem die veel groter is dan die van klimaatactiegroepen en milieuorganisaties, die voor 5% van de tijd bij deze toppen mogen aanzitten, terwijl de grote oliesmeerpijpen voor meer dan 90% van de tijd mogen deelnemen aan de besprekingen……..
Hannah McKinnon van Oil Change International stelt dan ook volkomen terecht dat het aanzitten bij klimaattoppen van deze grootvervuilers hetzelfde is als een tabaksfabrikant inhuren om het roken tegen te gaan…..
Erger nog is het feit dat de IEA, het International Energy Agency, in de weg staat van pogingen om de klimaatverandering nog enigszins af te remmen (te voorkomen is al helemaal onmogelijk daar deze verandering van temperatuur al een paar decennia gaande is en we in feite het klimaatkantelpunt al zijn gepasseerd…..)….. De IEA wordt als een marionet bespeeld door de fossiele brandstofmaffia en klimaatsceptice regeringen als de Trump administratie, ofwel de IEA staat in de weg naar echte actie tegen de klimaatverandering, dus in pogingen deze nog enigszins af te remmen…..

Totaal belachelijk dat de rapportage van de IEA, World Energy Outlook (WEO), door de reguliere media wordt gebombardeerd als het belangrijkste onderdeel van de IEA en ‘wereldwijd wordt erkend als uiterst gezaghebbend op gebied van energieprojecties en analyses….’ Ja ja, ik geloofde m’n ogen niet toen ik zocht naar wat men in de reguliere media denkt en zegt over de IEA en haar WEO……. (CDA huppeltrut van der Hoeven mocht al eens een paar jaar lang voorzitter spelen op vergaderingen belegd door de IEA, terwijl zij grootlobbyist was van kolenverbranding en kernenergie!!)

Bij Oil Change International denkt men dat met beleid van de IEA de temperatuur tegen het eind van de eeuw met 3 graden C. zal zijn gestegen en dat zelfs met een sterker alternatief van deze organisatie, het punt van klimaatneutrale uitstoot (door velen op 2050 gezet) pas 20 jaar later bereikt zal worden….. Men vergeet bij Oil Change International alle cumulatieve effecten die nu al optreden, effecten die de boel alleen maar verder in versnelling zullen brengen, waardoor een stijging van de temperatuur tegen het eind van deze eeuw zelfs de 5 graden Celsius zal overstijgen….. Zie het als het cliché van een olietanker die van volle vaart tot stilstand moet komen……. Wat betreft het jaar 2050 is het maar zeer de vraag of het grootste deel van de wereld of zelfs de EU energieneutraal zal zijn, de vraag stellen is haar beantwoorden als je ziet wat men naast al het lullen werkelijk doet…….
Uiteraard is de bedoeling van Oil Change International juist en dat is alle smeerpijpen de toegang tot ‘onafhankelijke klimaatorganisaties’ (als de IEA) en tot klimaattoppen geheel te ontzeggen. Lees en teken de petitie ajb en zegt het voort! (petities hebben wel degelijk zin, de toppen van bedrijven die smerig bezig zijn reageren niet voor niets uiterst agressief als ze volkomen terecht op het foute beleid van hun bedrijf worden gewezen…)
Big Oil isn’t “part of the solution”

Make no mistake: this is the make or break decade for a safer climate future. We’re short on time and institutions like the International Energy Agency (IEA) are standing in the way of the climate ambition we all know is needed.

The reason for this is clear: The IEA is being influenced by the fossil fuel industry and by governments (like the Trump Administration in the US) that are doing everything possible to protect Big Oil and Gas.

Send your message to the IEA’s leadership: The climate crisis is here and any institution providing cover to the fossil fuel industry is on the wrong side of history.

At the heart of the problem is the IEA’s World Energy Outlook (WEO), which is seen as the go-to report on the future of energy. It informs countless financial and political decisions on energy. But it’s got a fatal flaw: it centers a scenario that would lead us to a catastrophic 3°C of warming. Even its more ambitious scenario has us hitting net-zero emissions 20 years too late.

Fatih Birol, the IEA’s Executive Director, continues to push fossil fuel investment (despite the science) and is now doubling down on his industry-friendly approach. Just last week he wrote an op-ed for CNN laying out his vision for a “grand coalition” to reduce emissions. Right now, Fatih’s “grand coalition” includes the very companies that created this mess in the first place.

Having Big Oil help chart our path out of this crisis is like hiring Big Tobacco to run an anti-smoking ad campaign.

In November, we made it crystal clear that the IEA can no longer get away with enabling the climate crisis. For the first time, the legitimacy of the WEO was challenged on climate grounds in almost all mainstream media thanks to concerned folks like you.

The IEA has a lot to prove if it wants to be fit for purpose in an era of climate emergency. If it can’t shake the influence of Big Oil, Gas, and Coal and enabling governments, it cannot be seen as legitimate as we work to stay within the critical 1.5˚C limit set by the Paris Agreement.

We know the IEA is listening – and getting nervous. We hope you will take action today by sending a message to IEA leadership, and stay tuned throughout the year as we demand that powerful international institutions work for – not against – bold climate action.
