Vanmiddag in het BBC World Service radionieuws van 14.00 u. een zwaar gekleurd verslag over de vrijlating van de al 3 jaar in huisarrest vastzittende Huawei topvrouw Meng Wanzhou (ook de dochter van de Huawei oprichter)……
Robin Brant, de correspondent van de BBC in China, stelde tot 2 keer toe dat Wanzhou heeft toegegeven fouten te hebben gemaakt (‘wrongdoing’), alsof daarmee de zaak duidelijk is……

De meeste berichten in de reguliere westerse media stellen dat Wanzhou zich schuldig heeft gemaakt aan fraude en samenzwering, echter de werkelijke reden is het zakendoen van Huawei met Iran, daar de VS de sancties had verzwaard nadat de fascistische psychopaat Trump de 5+1 nucleaire deal (ook wel JCPOA genoemd) met Iran eenzijdig had opgezegd…..
Let wel: deze sancties waren en zijn illegaal, immers niet gesteund door een VN resolutie, maar wel door de neoliberale schoft en premier van Canada Trudeau…… De hele arrestatie en het vastzetten van Wanzhou door Canada was al even illegaal, als de sancties van de VS en Canada tegen Iran……
Uiteraard besteedde de BBC aanmerkelijk veel tijd aan de 2 Canadezen die na de arrestatie van Wanzhou werden vastgezet in China en natuurlijk had men daarop vooral veel commentaar zoals het vasthouden van de 2 in de gevangenis….. Even vergetend dat de arrestatie van Wanzhou volkomen illegaal was en één van de middelen waarmee de VS het bedrijf Huawei heeft gedemoniseerd en zelfs heeft beschuldigd van spionage via haar G5 netwerk, wat volgens westerse geheime diensten niet eens mogelijk is….* Logisch daar je voor spionage via dat netwerk toch echt de belangrijkste servers van het land nodig hebt dat je wilt bespioneren….. Het is voorts wel zeker dat wanneer China deze ‘2 Michaels’ zoals men ze is gaan noemen, niet had gearresteerd Wanzhou op zeker zou zijn uitgeleverd aan de VS…..
Wat betreft spionage kan de VS het beste de eerste 100 jaar de vuilbek houden, dat land is meerdere keren betrapt op het bespioneren van andere landen, zelfs van westerse partners…… Let wel: die spionage is wel bewezen, terwijl wat betreft de spionage van China en Rusland we de geheime diensten van de VS en andere westerse landen moeten geloven, die bewezen al weet ik hoe vaak hebben gelogen…….
Kortom: zelfs de 3 jaar te late vrijlating van Wanzhou wordt in het westen weer misbruikt om China te demoniseren, alsof China deze ellende is begonnen….. Walgelijk!! (en dan durft de BBC te beweren een onafhankelijke zendgemachtigde te zijn….. ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha!)
De brutaliteit van de fascistische apartheidsstaat Israël kent werkelijk geen grenzen meer (ach, dit is eigenlijk al heel lang zo): Israël heeft de VS openlijk gedreigd Iran aan te zullen vallen als de VS toenadering zoekt tot Iran en zich weer aansluit bij de nucleaire deal met Iran (ook wel genoemd de P5+1 nucleaire deal, of: Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action >> JCPOA) Ondanks alle controles op de nucleaire installaties van Iran blijft Israël zeggen dat deze deal een grote zwendel is, Israël wil dan ook in het geheel geen vrede met Iran, niet dat Iran ooit Israël heeft aangevallen, maar omdat Iran groepen steunt die het opnemen voor de Palestijnen en ondanks dat Israël zegt dat de raketten afgeschoten door de Palestijnen op haar grondgebied uit Iran komen, heeft dit land daar nooit ook maar 1 bewijs voor geleverd……….
Het voorgaande terwijl men het kernenergie programma van Iran nauwlettend in de gaten houdt en de controlerende partijen waaronder het Internationaal Atoomenergieagentschap (IAEA) stellen dat Iran niet bezig is met het bouwen van een kernwapen, ondanks dat stellen de Israëlische geheime diensten en politici dat Iran al bijna zo’n wapen heeft………
Israël heeft Washington dan ook te verstaan gegeven dat Israël op het moment dat de VS zich weer aansluit bij de nucleaire deal, het land over zal gaan tot het bombarderen van de nucleaire faciliteiten in Iran……
Wat Israël bereikt met dit soort schunnige dreigementen is dat steeds meer inwoners van Iran achter het plan zullen gaan staan voor een eigen kernwapen, immers Israël heeft meerdere van die wapens en zoals men in Iran (en elders) de grenzeloze agressie van Israël kent, zal dit land zelfs niet aarzelen deze te gebruiken tegen Iran en daarmee tegen het Iraanse volk……
Al is dat waarschijnlijk niet eens nodig, immers in tegenstelling tot het artikel hieronder, waarin wordt gesteld dat Israël alleen zal optrekken tegen Iran (zonder de VS), heeft Israël intussen verdragen gesloten met soennitische arabische landen, die de pest hebben aan het sjiitische Iran…… Zo kan het land met één van de best uitgeruste legers op aarde, Saoedi-Arabië, bij wijze van spreken het bloed van sjiieten wel drinken, zeker als die sjiieten uit Iran komen, een vijandschap die al heel lang teruggaat, maar die verder is ‘opgebloeid’ door de humanitaire hulp van Iran aan het volk van Jemen….. Ondanks leugens dat Iran raketten en ander wapentuig aan de Houthi’s in Jemen zou leveren, is ook daar tot het moment van vandaag geen flinter aan bewijs voor geleverd……..
Arie Egozi, de schrijver van het hieronder opgenomen artikel, is het zo te lezen wel eens met de scherpslijpers in Israël die onder meer zeggen dat elke concessie aan Iran onherroepelijk tot meerdere Iraanse kernwapens zal leiden, ze wijzen daarbij naar Noord-Korea dat ondanks alles toch een kernwapen zou hebben, iets dat ik nog steeds betwijfel, immers nooit werd er bovengronds na een ondergrondse kernproef op de bewuste plek radioactiviteit gemeten en dat zou volgens deskundigen op zeker middels satellieten te meten moeten zijn in de dagen na zo’n kernproef…. Deze deskundigen verdenken Noord-Korea ervan bij elke proef een enorme hoeveelheid TNT (of C4) tot ontploffing te brengen, dat zou de gewenste uitslag geven op de Schaal van Richter…… (een apparaat dat aardbevingen registreert; e.e.a. daar een ondergrondse kernproef een kleine aardbeving veroorzaakt…..)
Terwijl Israël nu is begonnen met een genocide op de Palestijnen, dit door het maar mondjesmaat doorlaten van medicatie en medische hulp-middelen naar de Palestijnse gebieden, het land heeft zelfs een op de West bank nieuwgebouwde medische post t.b.v. de bestrijding van het Coronavirus in puin gelegd daar de vergunning niet in orde zou zijn en dat op zogenaamd Palestijns grondgebied (maar waar Israël het voor het zeggen heeft en in feite de hele West Bank nog steeds bezet houdt……)
Het is te hopen dat Rusland Israël in bedwang kan houden, anders kunnen er wel eens heel verschrikkelijke dingen gaan gebeuren en dat in een gebied dat al door de VS met hulp van haar bips-likkende NAVO-partners en Israël in vuur en vlam is gezet (oh vergeet ik nog terreurstaat Saoedi-Arabië te noemen, dat land heeft de terreurgroepen in Irak en Syrië gesteund en van wapens voorzien en voert NB al jaren een genocide uit in Jemen >> alweer met hulp van de VS, GB en Frankrijk, waar Nederland ook nog eens onderdelen van wapensystemen levert aan deze terreurstaat…….. Israel threatens U.S. Israelis Say They’ll Attack Iran If US Eases Sanctions

January 26, 2021 “Information Clearing House” -TEL AVIV: Israel has said openly that it will attack Iran if the U.S eases sanctions against the Shiite regime and agrees to go back to the nuclear agreement the Jewish state claims is “the biggest hoax in recent history.”
“Israel needs to know — and fast — whether Washington plans to stop Iran’s race to the bomb or take some action to do this,” a source told BD.
Israeli intelligence is closely watching the Iranian nuclear facilities. “The people who need to know are updated by the hour” the source said.
Israel allegedly attacked another Iranian target in Syria on Jan 21 and such attacks are likely to continue. “This pressure will continue and grow, as a preparation for a direct attack on targets in Iran,” the Israeli source here added.
Ministers of the Likud Party said earlier this week that the new US administration must not “appease” Iran, and warned Tehran that the Jewish state will not tolerate its military presence in Syria or accept its plans to build a nuclear bomb.
One of the more direct warnings came from Likud minister Tzachi Hanegbi , part of Bibi Netanyahu’s inner circle. He said Israel could attack Iran’s nuclear program if the United States rejoined the nuclear deal.
“If the United States government rejoins the nuclear deal — and that seems to be the stated policy as of now — the practical result will be that Israel will again be alone against Iran. By the end of the deal Iran will have received a green light from the world, including the United States, to continue with its nuclear weapons program,” Hanegbi said in an interview with Israel Kan news channel.
A top Israeli expert on Iran and the Arab world, Mordechai Kedar, told Breaking D that he is sure Washington will ignore all the Israel requests. “The new administration will do everything to bring Iran back into the family of nations, without really understand their real goals.”
Kedar added that this will cause great fears in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states. Israel will be left alone to act in open and covert actions against the Iranian nuclear program.
Kedar explained the Iranian motivation: “They saw what happened to Libya and Muammar Gaddafi after he stopped his nuclear program while at the same time, they see how the world gently treats North Korea now that is has a bomb. The lesson for Teheran is very clear.”

In recent months Iran has signaled that it wants the end of the sanctions and has begun enriching uranium to a level of 20%, in violation of its commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). At the same time, Iran has emphasized that its action is reversible, and stands ready to return to its obligations if the United States returns to the agreement and lifts sanctions.

Iran has several objectives, says Yossi Kuperwasser, former director general of the Israel Ministry of Strategic Affairs and head of the research division of IDF Military Intelligence. The first is shortening the period needed to achieve adequate amounts of enriched uranium to a level higher than 90% for producing a nuclear explosive device. Iran currently has 4.5% enriched material that, if enriched further, will be sufficient for more than two nuclear explosive devices. The time it takes Iran to obtain the amount of uranium required for one device from the moment it decides to do so (“breakout”) is about two months, but if the enrichment to 20% is carried out only by the 1,000 centrifuges operating in the deep underground facility at Fordo, as the Iranians have done so far, it will take longer. “The Iranians recently installed cascades (sets) of advanced centrifuges at the underground facility in Natanz, and if 20% enrichment is also conducted there, the time needed to stockpile the material will be shortened,” he says in a comprehensive paper he wrote for the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, a thinktank here.
“Enriching uranium to a level of 20% is also an expression of Iranian pluck. This is a move with no immediate risk of a strong reaction from the United States after the bluster of Tehran’s implied threats that did not materialize into a violent Iranian response against the Americans on the anniversary of the assassination of Qassem Suleimani. In this respect, the Iranian measure is intended to help divert public attention from the regime’s caution, which reflects recognition of its weakness and recoils from widespread confrontation with the United States, in light of U.S. warnings,” Kuperwasser writes.
The fourth and most important goal is to make it clear to incoming President Biden that his best option is to return quickly to the JCPOA.
The initial international response to the move has been slack. More attention is given to Iran’s hijacking of a South Korean tanker. Iran hopes to get Seoul to release frozen Iranian funds.
“For now, Iran will be happy to take that safe bet on the way to a toothless nuclear agreement that will give them not only one nuclear bomb but a large arsenal of nuclear weapons in a decade – without suffering militarily or economically. The declared willingness of Iran to return to the agreement testifies to its preferences.” Kuperwasser says.
What’s the right response? Send clear and unambiguous signals to Iran that any attempt to move towards the acquiring of enough enriched uranium for the production of nuclear weapons will be met harshly, with “all options on the table.” At the same time, economic pressure must continue to compel Iran to accept a new agreement that would scrupulously prevent any possibility of its stockpiling nuclear weapons. It must include full oversight everywhere and at all times, the lifting of restrictions on the duration of the agreement, the demolition of the enrichment facility in Fordo, and the inclusion of ballistic missiles in the deal.Now, how will the Biden administration react?
Venezuela en Iran zijn beiden keihard getroffen door de illegale sancties van de VS, waardoor heel veel bedrijven niet durven te handelen met deze landen, vanwege de door de VS beloofde strafmaatregelen bij overtreding van haar (nogmaals) illegale sancties….. Venezuela wordt al helemaal hard getroffen door de VS, dat met haar illegale sancties ervoor zorgt dat deze landen veel meer last krijgen met het Coronavirus dan andere landen, wegens het grote gebrek aan mondmaskers en beschermende kleding, om over de enorme tekorten aan medicijnen en medische hulpmiddelen (als apparatuur) nog maar te zwijgen….. In Venezuela heeft dit al aan bijna 50.000 mensen het leven gekost…….. De VS was zelfs zo brutaal om met de steun van Canada en de EU een bedrag van 4 miljard dollar van de Venezolaanse overheid te blokkeren…… Dit bedrag had Venezuela in de VS uitstaan voor de aankoop van medicijnen en medische hulpmiddelen en dan durft de psychopathische totaal-idioot Trump te zeggen dat medicijnen en medische hulpmiddelen niet onder de sancties vallen, alsof iedereen blind is (‘blind’ als de ‘parlementen’ van de EU en Canada)…….
Niet vreemd dus dat Iran (met dezelfde problemen) en Venezuela elkaar helpen, zo is er nu een ‘konvooi’ van 5 Iraanse olietankers op weg zijn naar Venezuela om daar brandstof af te leveren….. Vannacht werd op BBC World Service radio gemeld* dat de eerste Iraanse olietanker onder begeleiding van de Venezolaanse marine de territoriale wateren van Venezuela heeft bereikt, ondanks een dreigement van de Trump administratie dat het actie zal ondernemen om te voorkomen dat deze tankers Venezuela bereiken.
De Trump administratie had al marinefregatten buiten de territoriale wateren van Venezuela en dreigde eerder dat het zal ingrijpen (kelderen?) als de Iraanse olietankers zullen proberen Venezuela te bereiken……. Alleen deze uitlating zou zeker voor de rest van de westerse wereld genoeg moeten zijn geweest om de VS ambassadeurs op het matje te roepen en hen duidelijk te maken dat de VS moet stoppen met haar ongebreidelde terreur tegen deze 2 landen, al helemaal tijdens de Coronacrisis…. Echter reken maar dat ook nu Canada (met grote mijnbouw belangen in Venezuela) en de EU-lidstaten achter de VS acties tegen deze Iraanse schepen zullen staan, althans mochten de overgebleven 4 tankers worden aangevallen, immers men heeft tot nu toe alle VS leugens als zoete koek geslikt, hoeveel doden daardoor ook zijn te betreuren…….
Gelukkig heeft de VS nog geen actie ondernomen en laten we hopen dat dit niet alsnog zal gebeuren met de overgebleven 4 andere olietankers…..
Tot slot nog dit: de VS vaart o.a. in de territoriale wateren van de Antillen en dus deels in Nederlandse wateren voor de kust van Venezuela, daarmee is Nederland direct betrokken bij de VS terreur tegen het Venezolaanse volk!!! Iranian trading ships are en route to Venezuela, but the Trump administration threatened to take “measures” against them and has several warships in the Caribbean. If the US Navy intercepts the ships, it would be a blatant act of piracy and could start wars with two countries! Tell Defense Secretary Mark Esper that the U.S. has no business interfering in peaceful trade between Iran and Venezuela!
The Trump administration is saber rattling, again. Five Iranian trade ships are on their way to Venezuela as the two countries are engaging in trade in order to overcome the brutal sanctions imposed by the U.S. Unfortunately, senior administration officials have called this trade “unwelcome” and threatened to take “measures” in response, an ominous warning given that the US Navy is already deployed in the Caribbean and has threatened to shoot down Iranian ships in the seas outside their own country.
Both Iran and Venezuela are subject to what Trump calls “maximum pressure.” Now the Trump administration could start a war or deadly military actions against both countries if it intercepts the trade ships.
The U.S. has no business interfering in peaceful trade between two countries.
It’s no secret why Venezuela and Iran are trading: the U.S. sanctions. The people, economies and health sectors of both countries have been devastated by sanctions, and the U.S. is targeting businesses that trade with either. That leaves them little choice but to trade with each other. Iran is sending oil refinery technicians and gasoline to Venezuela in exchange for gold. Iran faces a cash deficit and Venezuela has a fuel shortage (after the Trump administration abruptly cut it off from purchasing chemicals needed to make gas last month), so it’s trade that makes sense for both, particularly in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.
There’s nothing alarming or nefarious about a gasoline for gold trade, but the Trump administration is doing everything it can to criminalize something countries do on a daily basis. Venezuela noted that any action against the ships would be a violation of international law, while Iran warned of a “quick and decisive response” should the ships be confronted — a potentially catastrophic situation.
Iran and Venezuela have a lot in common: they’re both nations that have opposed U.S. hegemony and have faced U.S. regime change efforts for decades. Schunnig ook dat Canada en ‘onze EU’ deze vorm van terreur steunen, terreur die zonder meer als misdaad tegen de menselijkheid moeten worden aangemerkt….. (te vergelijken met het uithongeren van belegerde steden in de middeleeuwen…..) Eén en ander geeft nog eens aan dat we van de EU alleen maar ellende kunnen verwachten, waar de EU steeds vaker de hielen likt van de VS en vooral de belangen behartigt van de grote bedrijven en de financiele sector……
Het meest ongelofelijke aan de flop Russiagate was wel dat men echte manipulatie van de presidentsverkiezingen in de VS buiten schot hield. Zo manipuleerde de zwaar corrupte Palestijnenslachter Netanyahu de presidentsverkiezingen van 2016 door een smerig praatje in het congres, waarbij hij waarschuwde zeker niet op Sanders te stemmen, zonder dat daar ook maar een woord aan vuil werd gemaakt door de reguliere media die wel moord en brand schreeuwden over Russiagate (en dat was en is een wel heel doorzichtige en belachelijke leugen….)….. Dit nog buiten alle andere manipulaties van die verkiezingen bijvoorbeeld door diezelfde reguliere media, de plutocraten en de grote bedrijven…..
Nu blijkt dat Netanyahu al weer bezig is met de manipulatie van de presidentsverkiezingen in 2020 en weer demoniseert hij (de Joodse) presidentskandidaat Bernie Sanders, waar deze al een paar jaar lang in de reguliere VS media is afgemaakt als socialist, communist en agent van Moskou…… Dit keer is de reden voor Netanyahu de terechte kritiek van Sanders op AIPAC, het American Israel Public Affairs Committee, een VS lobbyorganisatie voor de (nu officieel fascistische (nu officieel) en apartheidsstaat Israël.
Al zou Moskou een miljoen dollar in de presidentsverkiezingen steken, dan nog zou dit geen effect hebben, immers met de werkelijke geldstromen kan zo’n bedrag het verschil niet maken, laat staan de 100.000 dollar die Rusland in 2016 zou hebben uitgegeven aan reclames op Facebook (‘voor borsjt en wodka..’)…..
De scherpslijpers van 2016 zijn zo zot dat ze stellen dat Moskou Trump nog 4 jaar als president van de VS zou willen hebben, terwijl diezelfde Trump o.a. meermaals sancties heeft getroffen tegen Rusland en Trump bijna het jaarrond militaire oefeningen laat houden langs de Russische grens (zou je moeten proberen langs de VS grens…)…. Dan is er nog het verbieden door Trump van de verdere aanleg van gaspijpleiding Nord Stream 2 (NS2), tussen Rusland en Duitsland en waar hij de bedrijven die daaraan meewerken heeft gewaarschuwd zich terug te trekken uit dat project….. Het laatste daar Trump het zwaar gesubsidieerde schaliegas wil slijten aan de EU, verder heeft Trump Rusland meermaals geschoffeerd i.z. Syrië…. En dat zijn nog maar een paar bewijzen dat Rusland Trump kan missen als een boer met kiespijn…..
De geheime diensten in de VS hebben onlangs alweer gesteld dat Rusland bezig is met het manipuleren van de voorverkiezingen en de uiteindelijke presidentsverkiezingen a.s. november. Uiteraard doen ze dit, daar ze op zeker nog meer budget en bevoegdheden zullen krijgen om deze ‘manipulatie’ tegen te gaan……

The issue might end up dominating discourse in 2020 as well. Last month, intelligence officials warned House members that Russia is allegedly meddling in an effort to get Trump reelected.
Concerns about Putin’s impact on U.S. elections has generated countless articles and wall-to-wall cable news coverage. It also fueled an impeachment investigation. However, blatant election interference from other countries is certainly not treated in the same way.
This contradiction was on display over the weekend, when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed AIPAC’s annual policy conference via video feed. Netanyahu repeatedly referenced Democratic frontrunner Bernie Sanders, who skipped the conference and claimed that the lobbying group promotes bigotry. At the most recent Democratic debate, Sanders called Netanyahu a “reactionary racist.”
“We were all reminded a few days ago that there are forces who seek to break our alliance,” said Netanyahu, “Last year, those who came to AIPAC were accused of dual loyalty. This year, AIPAC was accused of providing a platform for bigotry. These libelous charges are outrageous.”
Netanyahu wasn’t the only Israeli official to attack Sanders at the conference. Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon said, “We don’t want Sanders at AIPAC. We don’t want him in Israel. Anyone who calls our prime minister a ‘racist’ is either a liar, an ignorant fool or both.”
Responding to Danon’s comments on Face the Nation, Sanders said he was calling for a more evenhanded foreign policy. “I am not anti-Israel…but what we need in this country is a foreign policy that not only protects Israel but deals with the suffering of the Palestinian people as well,” said Sanders.

This certainly isn’t the first time that Netanyahu has intervened in United States politics. In 2015, the Prime Minister infamously visited Washington so that he could argue against former president Barack Obama’s Iran Deal in congress. Obama was never consulted about the visit and the administration called it a “departure from protocol.”

The British ambassador to the U.S., who’s briefings to London leaked yesterday, agrees with that take:
[Sir Kim Darroch] questioned Trump’s recent claim that he aborted a missile strike on Iran because it would have caused a predicted 150 casualties, saying it ‘doesn’t stand up’.
‘It’s more likely that he was never fully on board and that he was worried about how this apparent reversal of his 2016 campaign promises would look come 2020′ – at the next Presidential election.
Elijah Magnier reported that Trump had asked Iran to allow him to strike back, but was rebuffed:
According to well-informed sources, Iran rejected a proposal by US intelligence – made via a third party – that Trump be allowed to bomb one, two or three clear objectives, to be chosen by Iran, so that both countries could appear to come out as winners and Trump could save face. Iran categorically rejected the offer and sent its reply: even an attack against an empty sandy beach in Iran would trigger a missile launch against US objectives in the Gulf.

A senior Iranian general has revealed that Washington, through diplomatic channels, recently asked Tehran to allow it to conduct a small-scale operation in the Iranian airspace in order to save its face following the IRGC’s shoot-down of a US spy drone.
Brigadier General Gholam Reza Jalali, the Head of Iran’s Civil Defence Organization, said Iran vehemently rejected the US request, saying that it will respond to any act of aggression.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran responded that it views any operation as a war and will give a crushing response to it. You may initiate a war but this is Iran which will finish it,” he said Sunday.
The idea that the U.S. would ask Iran to allow it to bomb some targets without hitting back sounds crazy.

But this is the Trump White House and the only thing Trump really seems to care for is his own rating.
Trump wants a new nuclear deal with Iran. One with his signature, not Obama’s, on it.
Trump’s nuking of a deal while pressing for a new one shows that he has not the slightest idea how Iran, or any other independent country, reacts to such pressure. There will be no talks unless Trump rejoins the deal and lifts the sanctions:
The US sent over 60 diplomatic delegations to Iran as mediators to hold talks with Iran but the leader of the Islamic Revolution rejected the US calls for talks and Iran began to scale back its commitments under the JCPOA.
The Trump administration seems to have genuinely thought that Iran would not react to its ever tightening sanctions by exceeding the technical limits of the nuclear deal, which it now does. Back in November Secretary of State Pompeo opinedthat Iran would not do this:
Asked what the administration would do if the Iranians restart their nuclear program, Pompeo replied, “We’re confident that Iranians will not make that decision.”
That was of course nonsensical. Why was Iran expected to stick to a deal it does not benefit from? Such wishful thinking has no base in reality:
A U.S. official familiar with the issue told POLITICO on Sunday that the Trump team hopes for three things: that Europe imposes some sanctions on Iran to keep it from further violating the deal; that a financial mechanism the Europeans have set up to help Iran obtain non-sanctioned goods succeeds; and that recent U.S. military maneuvers in the Middle East are enough to deter Iran from further military escalation.
“Fundamentally, we want them to stay in the deal,” the U.S. official said, when asked why the Trump administration wants the European financial mechanism, known as INSTEX, to work. There’s no desire to engage in an all-out war with Iran or see it build a nuclear weapon, the official said.
Europe is for now unlikely to impose sanctions on Iran for a deal that Trump broke. If it does, the whole JCPOA deal is off. INSTEX is a joke. It ‘allows’ Iran to barter only something other than oil, and only against humanitarian goods which are not under sanctions. It is worse than the 1990s oil for food program that caused major economic destruction in Iraq. Iran does not fear U.S. military might. U.S. military assets in the Middle East do not deter. They are targets. Iran knows that Trump wants to avoid a war.
The little thought out U.S. policy gives Iran escalation dominance. It can and will increase its nuclear activities, as it announced, every 60 days. Tankers and other interests of its enemies around the Gulf will receive more damage. Trump will come under ever increasing pressure. Iran’s actions, like the sabotage of some ships near Fujairah, already show results:
[D]emand for ship fuel at Fujairah, the United Arab Emirates coastal shipping hub close to the Strait, has waned as some tankers stay away, traders involved in the regional market said.
The British ambassador expects no change in the confused White House policy on Iran:
One memo, sent by Sir Kim on June 22, refers to ‘incoherent, chaotic’ US-Iran policy, adding: ‘Its unlikely that US policy on Iran is going to become more coherent any time soon. This is a divided Administration’.
But the British policy on Iran is no better. On one side it is a signatory of the nuclear deal with Iran and claims that it wants to uphold it. On the other side it follows orders from the White House and hijacks a tanker that carries Iranian oil which it claims is going to Syria. Britain has absolutely no legal basis to do such. Even the former Swedish prime minister and rumored CIA asset Carl Bildt finds that behavior too crude:
The legalities of the UK seizure of a tanker heading for Syria with oil from Iran intrigues me. One refers to EU sanctions against Syria, but Iran is not a member of EU. And EU as a principle doesn’t impose its sanctions on others. That’s what the US does.
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi called the British act “robbery” and said that the ship was not heading to Syria. Its real destination is said to be “a new southern European customer” for Iranian oil, probably Italy. Iran’s Defense Minister Brigadier-General Amir Hatami promised to respond to the British act of piracy.
As usual the response will be asymmetrical and will come at a time and place of Iran’s choosing.

De tanker werd overvallen in Spaanse territoriale wateren en volgens dit land kreeg GB het verzoek van de VS om het schip op te brengen vanwege de (illegale) sancties die de VS Iran heeft opgelegd….. (sancties gebaseerd op alweer 99,9% aan leugens)
Reken maar dat de Spaanse versie over het gebeuren de waarheid is en dat zou een godvergeten schandaal zijn, immers de EU heeft Iran belooft de sancties van de VS tegen te gaan, om zo de Iran deal* te redden, de deal waarin Iran belooft niet langer te pogen een kernwapen in elkaar te zetten…. Ofwel: een EU-lidstaat, waar de EU heeft beloofd de sancties van de VS tegen Iran te verlichten, helpt juist mee de illegale VS sancties tegen Iran te handhaven…!!
Van de EU belofte is niets terechtgekomen, de belofte o.a. een betalingssysteem te gaan gebruiken voor zakendoen met Iran, anders dan het door de VS gecontroleerde SWIFT internationale betalingssysteem……. Intussen is de ellende voor het grootste deel van de Iraanse bevolking gegroeid tot enorme proporties (zo is er een tekort aan medicijnen), ellende veroorzaakt door de VS sancties…… Vanmorgen op BNR rond 7.35 u. de totaal afhankelijke en vooringenomen ‘buitenlanddeskundige’ Hammelburg, die sprak over de aankondiging van Iran, de verrijking van uranium met 1% extra te verhogen en dit te zullen herhalen als de EU haar beloften aan Iran niet nakomt. Die herhaling met 1% zou Iran volgens Hammelburg elke 60 dagen doen, even later stelde Hammelburg dat dit eens in de 6 maanden zou gebeuren….. Ach ja, als ‘buitenlanddeskundige’ mag je nu eenmaal dat soort fouten maken…… Hammelburg stelt dat de EU een diplomatieke oplossing wil, waar hij even ‘vergat te vertellen’ dat de al grote ellende in Iran door de VS sancties met de dag groeit en men geen tijd heeft voor ‘diplomatie’ op termijn…..
Nu blijkt dus dat Groot-Brittannië de VS helpt met haar illegale sancties tegen Iran, GB nog steeds een EU-lidstaat heeft blijkbaar schijt aan de gemaakte afspraken in de EU……..
Dit brengt me meteen bij het volgende punt: wie van de EU-lidstaten naast GB, saboteert de belofte van de EU de deal met Iran te handhaven en de sancties van de VS tegen te gaan?? Reken maar dat er meer EU-lidstaten als GB zijn, die het wel best vinden als de VS een oorlog tegen Iran begint……

Spain Says Iranian Oil Tanker Was Seized by Britain at US Request
(ANTIWAR.COM) — In a move that threatens to hugely escalate tensions between Iran and the US, British Royal Marines raided and seized an Iranian oil tanker at Gibraltar on Thursday. The tanker was accused by British officials of heading to Syria in violation of EU sanctions.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry confirmed summoning the British Ambassador to express “very strong objection to the illegal and unacceptable seizure” of the ship. Analysts expressed surprise at the unusually aggressive move against a commercial oil tanker.
British Premier Theresa May presented the raid as “firm action to enforce EU sanctions,” though Spain indicated that it was actually done because the Trump Administration asked Britain to do so. Spain said they’re looking into it, since the tanker was captured in Spanish territorial waters.
While the US hasn’t taken credit for the move yet, John Bolton was cheering the move, saying it would keep Iran from “profiting off the illicit trade,” which to be clear, is Iran shipping Iranian oil to Syria to sell it, when the US insists Iran isn’t allowed to sell any oil, and the EU says Syria isn’t allowed to buy any.

De destijds verantwoordelijk minister van BuZa, hare kwaadaardigheid Madeleine Albright durfde jaren later nog te zeggen dat die 500.000 in feite door de VS vermoordde kinderen, de moeite van het doden waard waren…….
Precies dat economische wapen is zoals gezegd terreur op grote schaal, zoals je over de sancties tegen Irak kon lezen. Het Iraanse bewind zal als destijds het Iraakse bewind moeten verdwijnen, zoals men ook Assad in buurland Syrië weg wilde en nog weg wil hebben…. En waarom? Iedereen was en is ervan overtuigd dat Iran zich aan de nucleaire deal hield en dat e.e.a. resultaat had…..
Zonder enig bewijs stelde de VS dat Iran zich niet aan de deal houdt en zich bezig houdt met de ‘destabilisatie van het Midden-Oosten’, werkelijk om je dood te lachen als je bedenkt dat de VS alleen deze eeuw al meer dan 2 miljoen mensen in het Midden-Oosten heeft vermoord en daarnaast de genocide van de Saoedische terreurcoalitie tegen het sjiitische volk in Jemen militair en politiek steunt en ……..
Een ander voorbeeld van terreur middels het sanctiewapen is Venezuela, vergeet niet dat al ver voor de VS ‘officiële sancties’ tegen het Venezolaanse volk instelde, er al lang en breed een geheime economische oorlog bezig was tegen dat volk, zelfs al onder de voorganger van Maduro, Hugo Chávez….
Zogenaamde deskundigen raken niet uitgeluld over het desastreuze economische beleid onder Maduro en Chavez, echter een betere bestudering van wat er werkelijk aan de hand was en is, laat zien dat deze economische oorlog de economie van Venezuela heeft neergehaald…..
Nu bedreigt de VS in feite de hele wereld, geen olie uit Iran, anders…… Het lullige is dat de EU eerder beloofde Iran te helpen, maar daar wegens angst voor de VS toch vanaf heeft gezien een ander betalingssysteem te gebruiken dan SWIFT, dat in feite wordt gecontroleerd door de VS….. Er is wel degelijk een ander internationaal betalingssysteem, maar reken maar dat de VS EU politici en die van afzonderlijke EU lidstaten onder druk heeft gezet niet op dat pad door te gaan…..
Zonder gebruik te maken van een ander betalingssysteem durven bedrijven niets te leveren of af te nemen aan/van Iraanse bedrijven, immers de VS kan bedrijven ten gronde richten die internationaal opereren……..
Hoe lang laat de wereld zich nog koeioneren door de VS, dat aanwijsbaar de grootste terreurentiteit ter wereld is, het Vierde (fascistische) Rijk…….
US Threatens to Sanction Any Nation That Imports Iranian Oil
(CD) — President Donald Trump’s special envoy for Iran further stoked tensions between Iran and the U.S. on Friday when he said the United States will sanction any country that imports Iranian crude oil.
Envoy Brian Hook, in his comments to reporters in London, said that there were no exemptions, reiterating a threat the Trump administration made two months earlier.
“We will sanction any imports of Iranian crude oil,” Hook said, according toReuters.
“There are right now no oil waivers in place,” said Hook, who added the administration intends to “sanction any illicit purchases of Iranian crude oil.”

Hook’s comments came four days after the Trump administration announced new economic sanctions against Iran and one day after Iran Foreign Minister Javad Zarif told Trump on Twitter that “Sanctions aren’t [an] alternative to war; they ARE war.”
“Negotiations and threats are mutually exclusive,” Zarif added.
Special envoy Hook’s new statements came as representatives to the remaining parties to the 2015 nuclear accord—the U.S. ditched it last year—met in the Austrian capital.
At the heart of the meeting in Vienna is Iran’s desire for European countries to deliver on promises of financial relief from U.S. sanctions. Iran is insisting that it wants to save the agreement and has urged the Europeans to start buying Iranian oil or give Iran a credit line to keep the accord alive.
President Trump, who’s at the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan through Saturday, indicated that his administration is keeping an attack on Iran still on table.
“I think that in the end, hopefully, it’s going to work out,” said Trump of the conflict between the two nations. “If it does, great. And if doesn’t, you’ll be hearing about it.”
Hook offered a similar take on Thursday in comments to AP.
Hook said that “we are not looking for any conflict in the region,” but if the U.S. is attacked, “we will respond with military force.”
Last week, Trump called off a strike he’d approved against Iran just minutes before it would have taken place. The Senate, on Friday, has a chance to rein in such military force.
The chamber began a vote Friday on a measure (pdf) to prevent an unauthorized war on Iran—a possibility that has some lawmakers bristling.
“A war with Iran would be a colossal mistake,” said co-sponsor Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) on the floor Thursday ahead of the vote.
“After 18 years of two wars in the Middle East, both of which where we still have troops deployed,” said Kaine, “we should not be fomenting, encouraging, blundering toward, rushing into a third war in the Middle East.”
Rep. Ro Khanna, sponsor of companion measure in the House, agreed.
In a Twitter thread Thursday, the California Democrat said that “the Senate is responding to a growing desire to avoid endless wars by voting to ensure Congress has a say before America is committed to another regime change conflict in the Middle East.”
“With the House soon voting on our amendment to prevent an unauthorized war against Iran,” Khanna continued, “it is clear there is bicameral, bipartisan momentum for Congress to reclaim its constitutional jurisdiction.”
Gisternacht werd bekend gemaakt dat Canada op 1 december de topvrouw van o.a. smartphone fabrikant Huawei, Meng Wanzhou (ook de dochter van de Huawei oprichter) heeft gearresteerd op verzoek van de grootste terreurentiteit op aarde, de VS…….
Huawei zou de sancties van de VS tegen Iran hebben overtreden……..
Wat is dit voor kul, alsof de VS een verantwoordelijk wereldheerser is en niet een psychopathische massamoordenaar?!! Als de VS het bedrijven moeilijk maakt om zaken te doen in de VS, wanneer ze de door haar opgelegde sancties overtreden, is dat al te zot voor woorden, maar dit slaat werkelijk alles!!
De VS heeft volkomen onterecht het nucleaire verdrag met Iran, de P5+1 nucleaire deal, ofwel het Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) opgezegd. Ondanks dat de andere partijen in die deal het niet eens zijn met de Trump administratie, denkt de VS haar terreurwetgeving internationaal op te kunnen leggen……. In plaats van te demonstreren tegen de arrestatie van Huawei, deden de politici van andere landen die de deal sloten, er het zwijgen toe, om na korte tijd mee te gaan blèren in het valse VS koor dat Huawei niet alleen sancties overtrad, maar ook spioneert voor de Chinese overheid…… Men wilde in de rest van de westerse politiek geen commentaar geven op de arrestatie, daar dit behoorlijk vreemd zou zijn, gezien het eerder genoemde verdrag, vandaar ook dat men blij was met het lamme spionageverhaal waarmee men China kan bestoken……..
Zoals te verwachten was steunen ook de reguliere westerse (massa-) media de VS bij de arrestatie van Wanzhou, waar ze meteen even de nieuwste demonisering van China meenemen: het zojuist al aangehaalde spionageverhaal over o.a. de toestellen van Huawei, waarmee de Chinese overheid het westen zou kunnen bespioneren…… ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! Zo de waard is vertrouwt deze de gasten! Immers als er nu één land is dat alles en iedereen bespioneert is het de VS wel, zelfs de smartphone van Merkel, die het met de VS bevriende Duitsland politiek leidt, was niet veilig voor deze vereniging van terreurstaten…… Kortom deze media brengen ‘onvervalste’ anti-Chinese propaganda……
Zie verder de ambassades van de VS over de wereld, de grootste spionage bolwerken, zelfs die in ons Den Haag! Voorts bespioneert de VS grote bedrijven in het buitenland, om zo voordelen ten behoeve van grote VS bedrijven te vinden…… Als de Chinezen belangrijke politici of leiders van grote bedrijven willen bespioneren, doen ze dat echt niet via de telefoons van Huawei, ze hacken dan simpelweg de telefoon of (andere) computer van die personen, of die nu van Huawei, Samsung, Apple* of welk merk dan ook zijn…….. Wat een kul!
Het is duidelijk dat de VS met deze arrestatie, waarvan Trudeau en Trump keihard logen dat ze daarvan niet vooraf op de hoogte waren, grote Chinese bedrijven wil treffen en de truc schijnt gelukt te zijn als je de volkomen ten onrechte gezaaide haat en angst tegen/voor Chinese smartphone fabrikanten in alleen al de Nederlandse reguliere media ziet………
Hoe is het in godsnaam mogelijk dat de reguliere media zo keihard durven te liegen en onrust durven te zaaien, terwijl de valsheid van de claims er dik bovenop liggen, waarschijnlijk schat men het grootste deel van haar gebruikers in als niet nadenkende imbecielen, die men werkelijk alles kan voorkauwen en kan hersenspoelen met smerige sprookjes……. Vergeleken met de VS is Iran een vredelievende staat, iedereen die het interesseert kan dit controleren, de VS is de werkelijke terreurstaat en richt vooral in het Midden-Oosten de ene massamoord na de andere aan, waarbij het de wereldstabiliteit steeds verder aantast…….

Canada Arrests CFO of Chinese Telecom Giant for Violating US Sanctions on Iran
(MEE) — Canada arrested China’s Huawei Technology’s chief financial officer for allegedly violating US sanctions on Iran, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday.
Meng Wanzhou faces possible extradition to the US, WSJ added. A Canadian justice department spokesperson said she was arrested on 1 December.
A Huawei spokesman said the arrest happened as Meng was transferring flights.
“The company has been provided very little information regarding the charges and is not aware of any wrongdoing by Ms Meng,” he said.
“The company believes the Canadian and US legal systems will ultimately reach a just conclusion.”

Wanzhou Meng is facing extradition to the United States on suspicion she violated U.S. trade sanctions against Iran.

Meng’s bail hearing is set for Friday, according to a Globe and Mail report, citing Canada’s Justice Department spokesman Ian McLeod.
Meng’s arrest follows a strict set of US sanctions on Iranian oil and banking that was implemented in November but allowed a number of countries, including China, temporary waivers.
According to a Wall Street Journal report in April, the US Department of Justice had launched a criminal probe into Huawei for its alleged trade with Iran, and both the Commerce Department and Treasury Department had issued subpoenas for a potential violation of US sanctions.
Huawei is the world’s largest manufacturer of cellular-tower electronics and the third-biggest smart phone producer.
Meng’s arrest happened on the same day that US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping met to discuss a possible truce to their ongoing trade war.
US Senator Ben Sasse, a Republican, said the arrest was made to protect American interests.
“Americans are grateful that our Canadian partners have arrested the chief financial officer of a giant Chinese telecom company for breaking US sanctions against Iran,” he said.
This isn’t the first time that the US has penalised Chinese telecommunication companies for potential sanctions violations.
In 2017, Chinese telecommunications rival ZTE paid the US almost $900m in fines for alleged business deals with Iran.
Brian Hook, is director Policy Planning, een interne denktank van het VS ministerie van buitenlandse zaken en is de belangrijkste adviseur van oorlogsmisdadiger Mike Pompeo. In Jemen en Saoedi-Arabië zou ‘rakettechnologie’ van Iran zijn gevonden in de overblijfselen van door Houthi rebellen afgeschoten raketten…… Er is zegge en schrijve één onderdeel in de elektronica gevonden, dat in Iran werd geproduceerd, waar Hook niet over lult zijn de onderdelen uit westerse landen en zelfs uit de VS, die tegelijkertijd werden gevonden…….. Bovendien, als er nu één land is dat de wereld volpropt met wapens is het de VS zelf wel!!
Het is als met de beschuldiging van de VS en Saoedi-Arabië wapens dat Iran wapens zou hebben verscheept naar Jemen, een beschuldiging van 3 jaar geleden, waar nog steeds geen flinter aan bewijs voor werd geleverd…… Wel is bekend dat 2 Iraanse schepen die werden onderschept en werden weggestuurd, humanitaire hulpgoederen vervoerde….. (al ver voor de Nederlandse giro 555 actie voor de aan honger lijdende Jemenitische bevolking…..) Juist die schepen zouden volgens Saoedi-Arabië en de VS (dat meehelpt aan de blokkade op zee) wapens hebben vervoerd, echter bij aankomst in de dichtstbijzijnde Afrikaanse haven werden de humanitaire hulpgoederen aangetroffen, zonder ook maar een pistool in de lading…
Het laatste geeft ten overvloede nog eens aan dat de VS actief meehelpt aan de genocide die de Saoedische terreurcoalitie aanricht in Jemen en alles doet om Iran te demoniseren, terwijl de V zelfs IS heeft geholpen aan wapens…..* Voorts heeft de VS aan de wieg van IS gestaan en begaat het zelf de ene grote oorlogsmisdaad na de andere, waarvan de allergrootste wel de illegale oorlogen zijn, die de VS voert waar het haar maar uitkomt…….
Kortom de VS is nog steeds op zoek naar de stok om de Iraanse hond te slaan en als zo vaak in het verleden, uiteindelijk is die stok niet nodig voor de VS om een land op volkomen valse gronden aan te vallen en grotendeels te vernietigen, maar ja, de VS is dan ook de grootste terreurentiteit op aarde……….**
De meest belachelijke opmerking van Hook in het hieronder weergegeven artikel is wel de opmerking dat de wereld streeft naar vrede in het Midden- Oosten en dat Iran dat frustreert, letterlijk: “As the world strives toward peace and security in the Middle East, we are working to reverse advances made by Iran and its proxies over the last several years,” ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha ha! Wat een smerige oplichter!!
De wereld streeft naar vrede met de VS voorop en doet dit door zoveel mogelijk burgers te vermoorden, zo heeft de VS alleen deze eeuw al meer dan 2,5 miljoen mensen vermoord: -in: illegale oorlogen, -tijdens door de CIA georganiseerde opstanden en staatsgrepen, -met het standrechtelijk vermoorden van verdachten, waarbij meer dan 90% van de slachtoffers niet eens werd verdacht, dus veelal vrouwen en kinderen……. The US will not hesitate to use military force against Iran, a State Department official said Thursday, displaying weaponry he said Tehran sent to different proxies.
The agency’s representative for Iran, Brian Hook, briefed reporters at a military base in Washington regarding Iran’s transfer of arms to proxy groups and the Tehran’s missile development.
He said the US prefers to engage with the country diplomatically, but the military option is on the table.
“We have been very clear with the Iranian regime that we will not hesitate to use military force when our interests are threatened. I think they understand that. I think they understand that very clearly,” Hook said.
“I think right now, while we have the military option on the table, our preference is to use all of the tools that are at our disposal diplomatically,” he added.
The US has taken a much harsher stance on Iran since President Donald Trump took office. Trump pulled Washington out of the Iran nuclear deal and reimposed sanctions on the Tehran earlier this month.
Hook unveiled evidence he said of Iran’s missile proliferation, and highlighted different weapons systems the US says were sent to proxies, with emphasis on Houthis rebels in Yemen.
He displayed an array of weapons picked up in Afghanistan, Yemen, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, claiming they were of Iranian origin.
If Iran is found to have sent weapons systems to these places, it would be in violation of UN resolutions.
“As the world strives toward peace and security in the Middle East, we are working to reverse advances made by Iran and its proxies over the last several years,” Hook said.
Many of the weapons Hook mentioned were obtained by Saudi Arabia, amid growing criticism in Washington of the US support for the Saudi-led coalition’s operations in the Yemeni civil war.
John C. O’Day publiceerde vorige week vrijdag een artikel op Fair.org dat ik overnam van Anti-Media (en dat je onder mijn schrijven terug kan vinden). Hierin vestigt O’Day de aandacht op de Iran-deal van een paar jaar geleden, deze deal of: the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), werd destijds bediscussieerd in de reguliere (massa-) media, waar men stelde dat Iran ofwel deze deal moest slikken, daar anders alleen oorlog met Iran zou overblijven als alternatief………
De voorspelling dat oorlog het enige alternatief zou zijn, werd door de Trump administratie gevolgd, door de deal alsnog af te blazen en met enorme anti-Iran propaganda te beweren dat Iran zich niet aan de deal houdt, ook al zeggen alle VN wapeninspecties dat Iran inderdaad is gestopt met de verrijking van uranium en is begonnen met het ontmantelen van de daarvoor benodigde centrifuges. Bolton, de oorlogshitser en oorlogsmisdadiger (die voor het leven gevangen zou moeten zitten in Scheveningen) beweerde dat wanneer Iran de boel zou belazeren, het land te maken zou krijgen met ‘de woede van de VS’, ofwel met grootscheepse terreur in de vorm van één van de zwaarste oorlogsmisdaden, het beginnen van alweer een illegale oorlog door deze grootste terreurentiteit op aarde………… Een belachelijke uitlating van Bolton daar de VS zonder enig bewijs en in tegenspraak met officiële VN rapporten toch al stelt dat Iran vals speelt, m.a.w.: de reden voor de VS om een (illegale) oorlog tegen Iran te beginnen, is door de VS zelf gecreëerd…….. (iets waar de VS ‘goed in is’, neem alle false flag operaties van deze terreurenteit)
O’Day stelt dat de woorden van figuren als Bolton en Trump nog amper op kritiek kunnen rekenen in de VS, wat volgens hem het gevolg is van de berichtgeving in de reguliere media……. O’Day noemt een groot aantal voorbeelden en stelt dan ook dat de Trump administratie die media volgt, echter daar ben ik het niet mee eens. O’Day vergeet het begrip Deep State, de werkelijke machthebbers, die al helemaal niet blij waren met de Iran-deal. Deze Deep State beheerst ook de massamedia en zijn derhalve verantwoordelijk voor wat die media brengen aan (nep-) nieuws, leugens en pure propaganda (waarbij Goebbels z’n gore vingers zou aflikken….) Ondanks dat een groot deel van die media in onmin leven met Trump, staan ze volkomen achter de terreur die de VS verspreidt over het Midden-Oosten, Latijns-Amerika en Afrika……. Vergeet daarnaast niet dat het in feite niet uitmaakt wie er regeert in de VS, al helemaal niet wat betreft de buitenlandpolitiek, neem ‘vredesduif’ Obama die als eerste VS president de volle 2 termijnen in (illegale) oorlogen was verwikkeld met meerdere landen en er zelf (officieel) 2 begon….

Trump Administration Follows Corporate Media Playbook for War With Iran
(FAIR.org) — Three years ago, as Americans debated the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran—popularly known as “the Iran deal”—I highlighted a troubling media trend on FAIR.org (8/20/15): “For nearly all commentators, regardless of their position, war is the only alternative to that position.”
In the months since US President Donald Trump tore up the JCPOA agreement, his administration has been trying to make good on corporate media’s collective prediction. Last week, John Bolton (BBC, 9/26/18), Trump’s national security advisor and chief warmonger, told Iran’s leaders and the world that there would be “hell to pay” if they dare to “cross us.”
John Bolton (BBC, 9/26/18): “Let my message today be clear: We are watching, and we will come after you.”
That Bolton’s bellicose statements do not send shockwaves of pure horror across a debt-strapped and war-weary United States is thanks in large part to incessant priming for war, facilitated by corporate media across the entire political spectrum, with a particular focus on Iran.
Back in 2015, while current “resistance” stalwarts like the Washington Post (4/2/15)
and Politico (8/11/15) warned us that war with Iran was the most likely alternative to the JCPOA, conservative standard-bearers such as Fox News (7/14/15) and the Washington Times (8/10/15) foretold that war with Iran was the agreement’s most likely outcome. Three years hence, this dynamic has not changed.

To experience the full menu of US media’s single-mindedness about Iran, one need only buy a subscription to the New York Times. After Trump withdrew from the JCPOA, the Times’ editorial board (5/8/18) wrote that his move would “lay conditions for a possible wider war in the Middle East.” Susan Rice (New York Times, 5/8/18), President Barack Obama’s national security advisor, agreed: “We could face the choice of going to war or acquiescing to a nuclear-armed Iran,” she warned. Cartoonist Patrick Chappatte (New York Times, 5/10/18) was characteristically more direct, penning an image of Trump alongside Bolton, holding a fictitious new agreement featuring the singular, ultimate word: “WAR.”
On the other hand, calling Trump’s turn against JCPOA a “courageous decision,” Times columnist Bret Stephens (5/8/18) explained that the move was meant to force the Iranian government to make a choice: Either accede to US demands or “pursue their nuclear ambitions at the cost of economic ruin and possible war.” (Hardly courageous, when we all know there is no chance that Trump or Stephens would enlist should war materialize.)
Trump’s latest antics at the United Nations have spurred a wave of similar reaction across corporate media. Describing his threat to “totally destroy North Korea” at the UN General Assembly last year as “pointed and sharp,” Fox News anchor Eric Shawn (9/23/18) asked Bill Richardson, an Obama ally and President Bill Clinton’s ambassador to the UN, whether Trump would take the same approach toward Iran. “That aggressive policy we have with Iran is going to continue,” Richardson reassured the audience, “and I don’t think Iran is helping themselves.” In other words, if the United States starts a war with Iran, it’s totally Iran’s fault.
Politico (9/23/18), meanwhile, reported that Trump “is risking a potential war with Iran unless he engages the Islamist-led country using diplomacy.” In other words, if the United States starts a war with Iran, it’s totally Trump’s fault. Rice (New York Times, 9/26/18) reiterated her view that Trump’s rhetoric “presages the prospect of war in the Persian Gulf.” Whoever would be the responsible party is up for debate, but that war is in our future is apparently all but certain.
Politico’s article cited a statement signed by such esteemed US experts on war-making as Madeleine Albright, who presided over Clinton’s inhuman sanctions against Iraq in the ’90s, and Ryan Crocker, former ambassador for presidents George W. Bush and Obama to some of America’s favorite killing fields: Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Syria. James Clapper, Obama’s National Intelligence Director, who also signed the letter, played an important role in trumping up WMD evidence against Saddam Hussein before the United States invaded Iraq in 2003. When it comes to US aggression, they’re the experts.
Vanity Fair (9/26/18) interviewed John Glaser of the Cato Institute, who called Trump’s strategy “pathetic,” and also warned that it forebodes war. In an effort to “one-up Obama,” Glaser explained, Trump’s plan is “to apply extreme economic pressure and explicit threats of war in order to get Iran to capitulate.” Sound familiar? As Glaser implies, this was exactly Obama’s strategy, only then it wasn’t seen as “pathetic,” but rather reasonable, and the sole means for preventing the war that every US pundit and politician saw around the corner (The Hill, 8/9/15).
When everyone decides that war is the only other possibility, it starts to look like an inevitability. But even when they aren’t overtly stoking war fever against Iran, corporate media prime the militaristic pump in more subtle yet equally disturbing ways.
Benjamin Netanyahu speaks for the Iranian people on CNN (9/29/18).
First among these is the near-complete erasure of Iranian voices from US airwaves (FAIR.org, 7/24/15). Rather than ask Iranians directly, national outlets like CNN (9/29/18) prefer to invite the prime minister of Israel, serial Iran alarmist and regional pariah Benjamin Netanyahu, to speak for them. During a jovial discussion this weekend over whether regime change and/or economic collapse is Iran’s most likely fate, Netanyahu explained to the audience that, either way,
“The ones who will be happiest if that happens are the people of Iran.” No people of Iran were on hand to confirm or deny this assessment.
Bloomberg (9/30/18) similarly wanted to know, “What’s not to like about Trump’s Iran oil sanctions?” Julian Lee gleefully reported that “they are crippling exports from the Islamic Republic, at minimal cost to the US.” One might think the toll sanctions take on innocent Iranians would be something not to like, but Bloomberg merely worried that, notwithstanding the windfall for US refineries, “oil at $100 a barrel would be bad news for drivers everywhere—including those in the US.”
Another prized tactic is to whitewash Saudi Arabia, Iran’s chief geopolitical rival, whose genocidal destruction of Yemen is made possible by the United States, about which corporate media remain overwhelmingly silent (FAIR.org, 7/23/18). Iran’s involvement in Yemen, which both Trump and the New York Times (9/12/18) describe as “malign behavior,” is a principal justification for US support of Saudi Arabia, including the US-supplied bombs that recently ended the brief lives of over 40 Yemeni schoolchildren. Lockheed Martin’s stock is up 34 percentfrom Trump’s inauguration day.
Corporate media go beyond a simple coverup of Saudi crimes to evangelize their leadership as the liberal antidote to Iran’s “theocracy.” Who can forget Thomas Friedman’s revolting puff piece for the Saudi crown prince Mohammad bin Salman? Extensively quoting Salman (New York Times, 11/23/17), who refers to Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as “the new Hitler of the Middle East,” Friedman nevertheless remains pessimistic about whether “MBS and his team” can see their stand against Iran through, as “dysfunction and rivalries within the Sunni Arab world generally have prevented forming a unified front.” Oh well, every team needs cheerleaders, and Friedman isn’t just a fair-weather fan.
While Friedman (New York Times, 5/15/18) believes that Trump has drawn “some needed attention to Iran’s bad behavior,” for him pivotal questions remain unanswered, such as “who is going to take over in Tehran if the current Islamic regime collapses?” One immediate fix he proposed was to censure Iran’s metaphorical “occupation” of Syria, Iraq and Lebanon. Isn’t this ironic coming from an unapologetic propagandist for Washington’s decades-long, non-metaphorical occupation of the two countries to the east and west of Iran (FAIR.org, 12/9/15)?
In a surprising break from corporate media convention, USA Today (9/26/18) published a column on US/Iran relations written by an actual Iranian. Reflecting on the CIA-orchestrated coup against Iran’s elected government in 1953, Azadeh Shahshahani, who was born four days after the 1979 revolution there, wrote: “I often wonder what would have happened if that coup had not worked, if [Prime Minister] Mosaddeq had been allowed to govern, if democracy had been allowed to flourish.”
“It is time for the US government to stop intervening in Iran and let the Iranian people determine their own destiny,” she beseeched readers.

Shahshahani’s call is supported by some who have rejected corporate media’s war propaganda and have gone to extreme lengths to have their perspectives heard. Anti-war activist and Code Pink founder Medea Benjamin was recently forcibly removed after she upstaged Brian Hook, leader of Trump’s Iran Action Group, on live TV, calling his press conference “the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen” (Real News, 9/21/18). Benjamin implored the audience: “Let’s talk about Saudi Arabia. Is that who our allies are?”
“How dare you bring up the issue of Yemen,” admonished Benjamin as she was dragged from the room. “It’s the Saudi bombing that is killing most people in Yemen. So let’s get real. No more war! Peace with Iran!” Code Pink is currently petitioning the New York Times and Washington Post to stop propagandizing war.
Sadly, no matter whom you ask in corporate media, be they spokespeople for “Trump’s America” or “the resistance,” peace remains an elusive choice in the US political imagination. And while the public was focused last week on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s perjurious testimony, the Senate finalized a $674 billion “defense” budget. Every single Democrat in the chamber voted in favor of the bill, explicitly naming Iran as persona non grata in the United States’ world-leading arms supply network, which has seen a 25 percent increase in exports since Obama took office in 2009.
The US government’s imperial ambitions are perhaps its only truly bipartisan project—what the New York Times euphemistically refers to as “globalism.” Nowhere was this on fuller display than at the funeral for Republican Sen. John McCain (FAIR.org, 9/11/18), where politicians of all stripes were tripping over themselves to produce the best accolades for a man who infamously sang“bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran” to the tune of a Beach Boys song.
McCain’s bloodlust was nothing new. Nearly a hundred years ago, after the West’s imperial competition culminated in the most destructive war the world had ever seen, the brilliant American sociologist and anti-colonial author WEB Du Bois wrote, “This is not Europe gone mad; this is not aberration nor insanity; this is Europe.”
Iranian leaders have repeatedly said they do not want war with the US (AP, 9/27/18), but US corporate media, despite frequently characterizing Trump as a “mad king” (FAIR.org, 6/13/18), continue to play an instrumental role in rationalizing a future war with Iran. Should such an intentional catastrophe come to pass, we can hardly say that this would be America gone mad; war is not aberration, it is always presented as the next sane choice. This is America.
