De VS (het land van de ongekende mogelijkheden, althans als je schathemelrijk bent) en dan met name de staat Texas, slaat internationaal alweer een enorm pleefiguur door abortussen tijdens de Coronacrisis te verbieden, één uitzondering zijn abortussen die het leven van de moeder sparen, m.a.w. ook zwangerschappen door verkrachtingen mogen niet worden afgebroken…….. (‘beschaving’ anno 2020….)
Gouverneur Greg Abbott liet weten dat alle onnodige medische verrichtingen moeten wijken voor de strijd tegen het Coronavirus, waarna Ken Paxton procureur-generaal van Texas, een dag later liet weten dat alle abortussen illegaal zijn, met het eerder genoemde voorbehoud: als het leven van de moeder gevaar loopt……..
Nu was het al zo dat het voor de arme bevolking van Texas vrijwel onmogelijk was een abortus te ondergaan vanwege alle regels die zijn opgeworpen om het vrouwen zo moeilijk mogelijk te maken in aanmerking te komen voor een abortus….. Zo moeten ook arme vrouwen als onderdeel van de aanloop naar een abortus lange afstanden afleggen om een zoveelste belemmering van abortus aan te kunnen vechten, ofwel waar ze moeten smeken om een abortus, terwijl hen het geld ontbreekt om zo’n reis te maken…… Ook het niet of slecht verzekerd zijn voor zorgkosten is een belemmering voor vrouwen om in aanmerking te komen voor een abortus….. (een ‘godgeklaagd’ schandaal!!!)
Je snapt werkelijk niet dat een bestuur zo ongelofelijk inhumaan kan zijn en liegt dat abortussen niet nodig zijn tijdens de Coronacrisis…… Uiteraard is het zwanger zijn tijdens de Coronacrisis een hachelijke zaak, zeker als men arm is of net werkloos is geworden, of als de moeder het Coronavirus oploopt en die kans is tijdens een zwangerschap uiteraard groter……. Het meest walgelijke aan e.e.a. is wel dat wanneer vrouwen toch een abortus willen, zij zich zullen verlaten op mensen die niet bevoegd zijn, waarbij (zoals je ongetwijfeld weet) regelmatig de moeder om het leven komt…… (nogmaals: ‘beschaving’ anno 2020….)
Hoe is het mogelijk dat andere westerse landen nog steeds hijgend achter de VS aanlopen en die federale terreurstaat zelfs als voorbeeld nemen, een uiterst smerige vereniging van staten, die ongekende terreur uitoefent op een groot deel van de wereld en alsof dat niet genoeg is ook nog eens de eigen bevolking terroriseert, zoals in het hiervoor gegeven voorbeeld over abortus in Texas….. Benieuwd hoe e.e.a loopt in andere staten waar men het vrouwen uitermate moeilijk maakt om een abortus te ondergaan (in totaal 9 staten), in Ohio heeft procureur-generaal Dave Yost de abortusklinieken opdracht gegeven alle procedures te staken…….
Zelfs nu
de grote farmaceuten bezig zijn met het ontwikkelen van medicijnen om
het Coronavirus te bestrijden (vaccin) dan wel medicijnen om
besmetting te voorkomen, is dit geteisem tegelijk bezig om de prijs van
dergelijke medicijnen zover mogelijk op te drijven…..
Dit
soort farmaceuten, die het best te vergelijken zijn met een misdaad
organisatie, hebben dan ook lak aan de gezondheid van klanten die hun
medicijnen gebruiken, zolang ze maar blijven gebruiken en daarmee de
schandalig hoge winsten nog verder vergroten, winsten voor de
topgraaiers van deze bedrijven en voor hun
aandeelhouders……
Met dooddoeners als dat de ontwikkelingskosten van een medicijn zo hoog zijn, probeert men iedereen te laten geloven dat men niet de prijs opdrijft om zoveel mogelijk winst te maken, terwijl dezelfde farmaceuten aan marketing tot 30 keer meer uitgeven dan aan de ontwikkeling van een medicijn (zoals geld voor zogenaamde medische toppen op tropische eilanden waar de artsen dagenlang worden gefêteerd, als ze maar zoveel mogelijk van een bepaald medicijn voorschrijven…..) Het meest smerige is wel dat men zelfs medicijnen
die al lang worden voorgeschreven sterk verhoogt in prijs, zo is de prijs van een bepaald soort insuline 3 keer over de kop gegaan (zo meer daarover)…….
Gilead
Sciences is zo’n grote farmaceut en vorige week kondigde dit bedrijf
aan dat het een medicijn heeft gevonden dat veelbelovend is om het
Cortonavirus (covid-19) te bestrijden en heeft geprobeerd daar het
exclusieve recht voor te verkrijgen…. Grote ophef over zo in feite
misdadig handelen deed het bedrijf gas terug te nemen, echter de kans
dat het bedrijf de prijs flink gaat verhogen is levensgroot en dat voor mensen die
niets liever willen dan dat medicijn in het bezit krijgen….. Patiënten die het zich kunnen veroorloven zijn
bereid veel te betalen, wat betekent dat de grote arme onderlaag
in de VS het wel kan vergeten om aan zo’n medicijn te komen…* Gilead Sciences heeft eerder hetzelfde geflikt met
insuline (zie 1 aan het eind van het hieronder opgenomen artikel)
Juist in
deze tijd is het van het grootste belang dat overheden bedrijven als
Gilead Sciences de duimschroeven aandraait en hen bestraft voor
het verhogen van prijzen ten tijde van de Corona pandemie….. Lullig genoeg zit de politiek vol met lobbyisten voor de farmaceutische maffia, dit nog naast de continue lobby van deze farmaceuten bij regeringen……..
Vergeet bij dit alles niet dat de grote farmaceuten al financiële injecties hebben gekregen van overheden voor het snel ontwikkelen van een vaccin tegen het Coronavirus, wat men pas denkt te hebben ontwikkeld in de herfst van dit jaar…. Dit terwijl China al een aantal weken geleden heeft gezegd hoogstwaarschijnlijk eind april een vaccin te zullen hebben ontwikkeld, een vaccin waarvan men de ‘receptuur’ ter beschikking zal stellen aan de de hele wereld: kijk dat is slecht nieuws voor de farmaceuten die hopen met een vaccin tegen Corona nog hogere winsten te zullen behalen…..**

Big Pharma companies are
already trying to profit from drugs to treat or prevent coronavirus
infection — and we need your help to stop them.
Last week Gilead Sciences was
caught attempting to get exclusive rights to one drug that has shown
promise in treating covid-19. Under intense public pressure they
backed off, but they still have the ability to raise the price high
and gouge everyone for desperately needed medicine — just like they
have with insulin.1
The Intercept discovered that
Gilead had applied for, and the FDA had given them, exclusive
marketing rights for remdesivir, an anti-viral drug that early
studies have shown may help fight covid-19.
That means Gilead could have had a
monopoly on an essential drug in the fight against the coronavirus
pandemic. Even now that they’ve backed off on the exclusive rights,
they still can charge a huge sum for the drug.
But there’s a solution, one that
the federal government regularly used in the 1960s and 1970s. Under a
federal law known as Section 1498, the government can override a
patent at any time as long as the company receives “reasonable
compensation.”
This gives the government critical
leverage to negotiate lower prices. And the government could even
start producing lifesaving treatments itself under the Defense
Production Act.

* Vorige week nog het bericht dat een jongen van 17 is overleden aan het Coronavirus, daar hij niet verzekerd was en geen geld had…. De VS: het land van de ‘ongekende mogelijkheden’, in negatieve zin wel te verstaan…..
** In 2013 behaalden de grote farmaceuten ‘maar liefst’ een winst van 1 biljoen dollar (in de VS is dit 1 triljoen)…… Winsten van na 2013 kan ik vooralsnog niet vinden op het net, blijkbaar is men danig geschrokken van de ophef die dit cijfer uit 2013 gaf……
Brasscheck TV bracht enige tijd geleden een video over de schenkingen die de super welgestelden doen aan goede doelen. Een zaak waarover de media in de VS (en de rest van het westen) berichten als zou het gaan om een enorme aderlating voor zo’n filantroop, terwijl de werkelijkheid er ‘iets anders’ uitziet.
Deze zogenaamde filantropen doen deze enorme schenkingen zodat ze praktisch geen belasting meer hoeven te betalen over hun enorme vermogen…… Financieel deskundigen stellen dan ook dat deze plutocraten beter een eerlijk percentage (van meer dan 70%) belasting kunnen betalen over hun vermogen (in de VS is dit zelfs minder dan 20%….), daar dit om bedragen gaat die veel groter zijn dat de zogenaamde giften van deze topgraaiers…. In feite is deze manier van geld weggeven niet anders dan een vorm van belastingontduiking, hier o.a. gepropageerd door opperhufter Louise Fresco……*
De video waar het om gaat is door de VPRO gemaakt en lullig genoeg is het waarschijnlijk deze eertijds progressieve omroep die de video heeft laten verwijderen van het net, bepaald niet ondenkbaar dat de top van de VPRO, om het maar zachtjes te zeggen, niet blij was met het feit dat hun ‘vrinden’ van de golfclub werden belasterd in deze video…… Ook is het mogelijk dat de NPO de video ‘offline’ heeft gehaald, de NPO die burgers dubbel wil laten betalen voor het nazien van o.a. eerder uitgezonden documentaires…… (immers we betalen via de belasting al voor de producties van de publieke omroep…)
Hoe dan ook: totaal belachelijk dat men het gore lef heeft een dergelijke video van het net te halen, immers het is juist in het belang van het volk dat er grote transparantie is over het ‘reilen en zeilen’ van plutocraten, die al een grote stem hebben in hoe wij en andere westerse volkeren worden geregeerd…… Ik kan een dergelijke handeling dan ook niet anders zien dan censuur en zoals je weet: dat past niet in een democratie, maar in een dictatuur…….

Hoorde afgelopen zaterdagmiddag op WDR5 dat Warren Buffett een antwoord heeft gegeven op wat voor hem de belangrijkste zaak van de huidige tijd is. Welnu: de belangrijkste zaak is de oorlog tussen rijk en arm, aldus Buffett…… Deze oorlog is volgens Buffett door de (super) welgestelden aangegaan en zal ook door deze kleine groep worden gewonnen…….
Je zou kunnen stellen dat dit hetzelfde is als een open deur inschoppen, echter als de op 2 na rijkste man van de wereld iets dergelijks zegt, is het wel degelijk vermeldenswaard.
Buffett zet zich overigens wel in tegen armoede, nee niet niet als iemand die arme burgers wil verslaan of vermoorden, maar als filantroop die veel van zijn kapitaal weg zou hebben gegeven voor het bestrijden van armoede….* Dient nog wel opgemerkt te worden dat figuren als Buffett al zolang ze rijk zijn, veel te weinig belasting hebben betaald…… Bovendien wordt het ‘weggeven van geld’ fiks beloond in de VS, door deze welgestelden een nog lagere belasting te laten betalen, ofwel giften zijn voor een fiks deel aftrekbaar van de belasting…….
* Lullig genoeg helpt dit maar weinig daar Trump al sinds zijn aantreden de arme bevolking van de VS nog verder heeft uitgekleed dan ooit voor mogelijk gehouden, ofwel terwijl men doet aan liefdadigheid om de situatie van arme burgers te verbeteren, besteelt de Trump administratie deze bevolkingsgroep……

Floyd heeft een aangrijpend artikel geschreven op CounterPunch, waarin hij over zijn levenslange vriendschap schrijft met een man die niet ontkwam aan verslaving, niet in de laatste plaats daar hij in zijn jeugd
regelmatig werd mishandeld door zijn aan alcohol (harddrug!)
verslaafde vader en waar zijn moeder een chronisch patiënt was die
in feite weinig voor hem kon betekenen.
Het
steekt Floyd vooral over hoe men in de reguliere media en politiek
over aan drugs verslaafde personen spreekt en waar men deze
mensen op een smerige manier neerzet als waren het onmensen…..*
Eén voorbeeld is al helemaal om totaal ziek van te worden: een
sheriff durfde te zeggen dat een verslaafde, die als ‘draaideur
crimineel’ (zonder meer een zieke Nederlandse aanduiding) zijn ziekte
wilde misbruiken om eerder vrij te komen en tevens behandeld te worden…… Volgens de sheriff
heeft de gevangene zijn kansen verspeeld……. De crimineel in kwestie zat in het vierde stadium
van darmkanker, waarbij ook zijn lever al was aangetast, ofwel deze mens
was terminaal ziek en had nog maar kort te leven en alsnog kon hij het vergeten eerder te worden vrijgelaten….. De sheriff in kwestie durfde te zeggen dat de gevangene zijn ziekte misbruikte om eerder vrij te komen, ofwel een terminaal zieke misbruikt zijn dodelijke kanker als ‘excuus’ volgens deze hufter >> kortom deze Sheriff is een totale inhumane psychopathische ploert……

(nogmaals) aangrijpende artikel en geef ook commentaar als men mensen
wegzet als een vals dier of als vuilnis, alleen omdat ze verslaafd zijn, vaak het
gevolg van een vreselijke jeugd en dat in een ijskoude inhumane
neoliberale prestatiemaatschappij, waar men geen tijd heeft voor psychische
problemen (en in de VS geldt dit nog sterker als men niet verzekerd is en geen geld heeft…)…. Bovendien ziet het gros van de mensen niet dat alcohol een dodelijke harddrug is, waaraan alleen in ons land gemiddeld 12 mensen per dag sterven, echter daar het om alcohol gaat trekt men de schouders op en gaat door met de bezigheid waarmee men bezig was……
Als we onze maatschappij niet hervormen en de ‘neoliberale god’ (duivel) blijven eren, zullen nog velen psychisch ziek worden en /of verslaafd raken en zich het leven benemen….. De hoogste tijd voor een ministerie van geluk, gebruik daarvoor maar het meer dan belachelijke hoge budget voor oorlogsvoering (wat uiteindelijk velen het leven kost, terreur creëert en mensen in groten getale op de vlucht doet slaan):

My best friend from high school was
in and out of the prison system the last two decades of his life. He
was a drug addict. This was before the opioid epidemic; his poison
was crack cocaine. His father had been a raging, violent alcoholic
and his mother was a broken woman with chronic illnesses. My friend
spent most of his adult life trying to take care of her.
His addiction put him in dire need
of cash all the time, even as it made it impossible for him to hold a
steady job. It drove him to do stupid things. He once stole my car
and sold my son’s schoolbooks, which were in the back seat, to get
some cash. He would bang on my door late at night, asking for some
money to keep the dealers he owed from giving him a beat-down. He
finally ended up stealing items from his mother’s house and pawning
them.
He went to jail for that, then for the next several years kept
going back to jail for various probation violations: often for
getting caught drinking in public somewhere.
He eventually did a 13-month
stretch in state prison, where he danced a fine line between the
violent, racially polarized gangs that the prison authorities allowed
to run amok. He refused to join the white racists but was regarded
warily by the black gangs. He got beatings from people on both sides
but was also able, sometimes, to act as a peacemaker between them.
When he got out of the pen, his
life continued largely as before. He tried to set himself up as an
independent contractor, doing house repairs, roofing, carpet laying,
yard work. His mother died. He had long lost custody of his only son.
He still struggled with crack, but dulled his psychic pain mostly
with alcohol. He died at some point in his fifties, found in his
cheap apartment two or three days after his death, corpse bloated in
the sweltering heat of a Tennessee summer.
That’s it. That was his life.
That’s all he had. He was a dope addict. He was a convicted
criminal. He was a repeat offender. He was a desperate liar and a
thief. He was a lost soul of no use to the society he lived in and
then he died. That’s it.
He was also — without
exaggeration or nostalgic sentimentality — the kindest, most
sweet-natured, open and gentle person you could ever meet. He loved
music with a passion so deep it touched the core of the earth. His
failings tormented him like hot coals. He couldn’t understand what
had happened to him, why he couldn’t escape addiction, why his mind
was so muddled, why it wouldn’t stop roaring long enough for him to
ever gather himself and be real, be whole, be normal.
He was beaten and threatened all
through his boyhood. Even in high school he was a nervous wreck. He
used to sneak down to our house in the middle of the night after a
row with his father and try to sleep in the hedgerow of our yard, or
else on our back porch.
Fortunately, the dogs would always alert us,
and we’d find him and bring him in, make a bed for him on the
couch. He loved my family with a searing love that never abated for
the 50 years he knew us.
I think of my friend whenever I
hear some bullshit-bloated politician or commentator dismissing the
humanity and dignity of criminals and prisoners. I thought of my
friend today, when
I read a story about Jonathan Faircloth, a 33-year-old prisoner in
Alabama dying of colon and liver cancer that’s being left
untreated by the authorities. He too was back in prison for probation
violations — another drug addict who, while trying to make a normal
life for his wife and children, got slam-banged by his addiction
again.
I thought of my friend when I read
the reply of Etowah County Sheriff Jonathon Horton after the
Alabama media asked him about this human being left to die without
treatment:
“He’s using his
sickness as an excuse to get out of jail over and over again. In
layman’s terms, he just ran out of his chances. So the judge
revoked [his probation] and says he has to serve his days,” Horton
said.
He is using his sickness — his
Stage 4 colon cancer which has now spread to his liver and will kill
him by next year if not before — as an “excuse.” An excuse.
Stage 4 cancer as an excuse.
I read these words, and I think of
the countless sons of bitches across the country — the dimwitted
bulls in their stupid, prissy knit uniforms like this Etowah goober,
the tee-shirted assholes pounding out inhumane bullshit on Twitter,
the sleek politicians in designer suits, and the millions and
millions of people committing spiritual suicide by attending to the
brutal, barbaric blather of these walking, rotting husks.
I think of them, and I think of my
friend — a parole-violating drug-addicted repeat-offending criminal
of no use to the society he lived in — and I know — by God, I
know! — which side I’m on.

Sanders wordt in de VS uitgemaakt voor socialist en communist, beiden
scheldwoorden in deze feitelijke inhumane neoliberale politiestaat. Niet
dat de VS ooit socialistisch of communistisch was en zo haat heeft
opgebouwd tegen deze politieke ideologieën, nee socialisme en communisme
zouden een gevaar zijn voor de ‘American Dream….’ ‘The American
Dream’, terwijl een relatief groot deel van het volk afhankelijk is van
voedselbonnen en/of zelfs geen dak boven het hoofd heeft, laat staan dat
ze zicht hebben op de verwezenlijking van deze droom……. (die maar
voor zeer weinigen is weggelegd….)
Men maakt het arme deel van het volk zelfs wijs dat het plan tot opzetten van medische programma’s als de zorgverzekering ‘Medicare for All’ socialistisch zijn en mensen in een keurslijf dwingen…… En lullig genoeg geloven velen deze leugen, zelfs als ze zich geen zorgverzekering kunnen permitteren en zo min mogelijk zorg zoeken, zelfs als ze doodziek zijn…….
Communisme heeft nooit bestaan, niet in de Sovjet Unie en niet in China…… Socialisme is wel bestaand en een succes gebleken in landen als Cuba, Chili, Venezuela en Bolivia, waar Wikipedia het gore lef heeft om over Bolivia te stellen dat president Evo Morales is opgestapt na protesten……* Op zeker dat deze ingreep werd afgedwongen door de CIA dat geen socialistische regimes wenst in haar achtertuin……. Vergeet niet dat Morales de economie op orde heeft gekregen, met succes alfabetiseringsprojecten heeft geïntroduceerd en velen uit diepe armoede heeft getrokken…. Tja, als je dat voor elkaar krijgt als socialist ben je onmiddellijk een vijand van de grootste terreurentiteit op aarde, de VS!
Sanders zou een ‘zegen’ zijn voor de grote arme onderlaag in de VS en voor een aantal bevolkingen elders op de wereld die onder de knoet van Washington moeten leven. Juist daardoor zal hij het presidentschap van de VS niet kunnen winnen (men zal er zelfs alles aan doen om dat te voorkomen), immers hij heeft zo ongeveer de hele reguliere massamedia in de VS tegen, media die hem uit en te na demoniseren……… Hetzelfde geldt overigens voor de rest van de westerse massamedia, zelfs in Nederland hoor je deze geluiden…. Zo hoorde ik afgelopen week op BNR dat Sanders een fantast is daar hij studeren gratis wil maken en veel van de opgebouwde studieschulden wil kwijtschelden, dat kan niet volgens een aantal figuren >> terwijl de VS een oorlogsbudget heeft van meer dan 700 miljard (per jaar), waarvan 7% al meer dan genoeg is om iedereen die het kan, gratis te laten studeren en studieschulden kwijt te schelden….. Al zal het kwijtschelden van studiekosten een aantal jaren in beslag nemen en zal men de universiteiten moeten dwingen hun kosten fiks omlaag te brengen.
* Terwijl Morales door het leger werd gedwongen om op te stappen, men vloog hem aanvankelijk zelfs met een militair vliegtuig naar Mexico…….
Mensen
wat een zootje weer die democratische voorverkiezingen tot het presidentschap, het lijkt of we
weer terug zijn in 2016 toen Hillary Clinton met haar snerige spel geheel misdadig de voorverkiezingen
heeft gestolen van Bernie Sanders en de schuld voor het uitkomen van
deze misdaad (nogmaals: door haar begaan), aangreep om de Russen te beschuldigen van het hacken van o.a. haar mails, waardoor e.e.a. op straat kwam te liggen…… (in werkelijkheid was het een klokkenluider, een gefrustreerd lid van haar campagneteam, boos over haar smerige machinaties om Sanders uit te schakelen*)
Ook nu
lijkt het er sterkt op dat men koste wat kost wil voorkomen dat
Sanders de voorverkiezingen zal winnen en dat zou heel goed mogelijk
zijn daar men gisteren al claimde dat hij de voorverkiezingen in Iowa zou
hebben gewonnen…….. Vandaag wordt gezegd dat de minder bekende kandidaat Pete Buttigieg voor zou liggen op Sanders, echter wat kan je na deze rampzalig verlopen voorverkiezing nog geloven???

Niet
vreemd ook dat aanhangers van Sanders stellen dat ook deze
verkiezingen gemanipuleerd worden door de neoliberale welgestelde top van de
partij……. Mocht dat dreigen uit te komen, zal men andermaal de
Russen beschuldigen van inmenging, ook al had Rusland er 4 jaar
geleden en ook nu weer juist belang bij dat Sanders zou winnen, immers
dan is het echt afgelopen met oorlogsvoering overzee. Hoewel? Men
weet bij de CIA, FBI en NSA wel hoe dissidenten aan te pakken…….
Nog even over Trumps State of the Union, waarmee hij vooral zichzelf veren in de vieze reet stak, Trump stelt dat het prima gaat met de economie van de VS, echter hij vertelt wijselijk genoeg maar niet dat een enorm aantal boeren failliet is gegaan door zijn handelsoorlog, een oorlog die tevens veel middenstanders een faillissement bracht, winkeliers van wie de producten fiks in prijs zijn gestegen door de handelsbeperkingen op Chinese producten….. Voorts zou het aantal banen zijn gegroeid, dat was al gaande onder Obama, terwijl het aantal werkenden dat niet rond kan komen, onder Trump fiks is toegenomen, daarnaast worden een groot aantal mensen niet meer meegerekend als werkloos (een truc die men hier overigens ook toepast)…. memorable rant about how the Dems found themselves in this situation.
It’s
damn hard to calculate 15% of a number. That’s the threshold for
determining if a candidate won any delegates.
It’s

to do the calculation.
The
app was too hard to use. And bear in mind, one does have to punch in
numbers correctly.
It’s

scattered all over the room.
Of
course there is another key issue. People have to know how to use a
phone.
Using a phone requires
a mobile app and a backup telephone system. Now that might sound
easy, but I can tell you from the results, that it isn’t.
We’d love to see some data on the
median age of Iowa’s caucus volunteers.

Update (0915ET):
The official results from last night’s Iowa caucus are now 12 hours
late. Offering a terse update, the Iowa Democratic organization said
Tuesday morning that their new app-based reporting system, which was
never tested before caucus-day, had a “coding issue” but
that the results would still be reliable.
The problem, they explained, was
that the smartphone app only reported partial data. Somehow, the Dems
managed to completely botch an app that was only ever meant to be
used by 1,700 people helping to oversee the caucus results.
Of course, this wasn’t the only
‘technical glitch’ to impact the caucus: Over the weekend, the Des
Moines Register/CNN/Mediacom poll that was set to be released
Saturday was instead scrapped because of complaints from the
Buttigieg campaign about its methodology.
Sources said the issue was
attributed to an issue with the ‘font size’, as one of the pollsters
enlarged the text, bumping Buttigieg’s name off the list of options.
Sources also said that poll
would’ve confirmed earlier polls showing Bernie Sanders widening his
lead. Once again, Buttigieg (who was the first to declare victory
last night, effectively making him the ‘winner’ by default) was
behind this snafu.
A conference call with the various
campaigns has been scheduled for 11 AM local time.
Below are excerpts from a statement
to the press from the IDP**, courtesy of the
Hill.
“Precinct
level results are still being reported to the IDP. While our
plan is to release results as soon as possible today, our ultimate
goal is to ensure that the integrity and accuracy of the process
continues to be upheld,” the party said in a statement.
“As
part of our investigation, we determined with certainty that the
underlying data collected via the app was sound.”
“While
the app was recording data accurately, it was reporting out only
partial data. We have determined that this was due to a coding issue
in the reporting system. This issue was identified and fixed. The
application’s reporting issue did not impact the ability of
precinct chairs to report data accurately.”
“Because
of the required paper documentation, we have been able to verify
that the data recorded in the app and used to calculate State
Delegate Equivalents is valid and accurate.”
“We are reading
confirmed reports of Shadow’s work with the Iowa Democratic Party
on Twitter and we, like everyone else, are eagerly awaiting more
information from the Iowa Democratic Party about what happened,”
spokesman Kyle Tharp said.
But remember folks…don’t believe
the conspiracy theories…god forbid anybody suspects that this
extremely shady and suspicious string of events and coincidences is

As it turns out, tech snafus and ‘human error’ weren’t solely to
blame for last night’s caucus catastrophe.
A columnist for the Iowa Gazette reported that new rules
introduced for this year’s caucus, plus a lack of clarity on the
rules of the esoteric ritual apparently prompted some local precinct
supervisors to make illegal decisions about supporters of
‘non-viable’ candidates joining together.
After the Warren campaign spent
hours instructing its precinct captains in the arcane rules of the
caucus, some wondered whether nonpartisan volunteers in charge of the
process had received adequate training.
“Are you going to
report how this was a (beep) show?” asked Megan Lange, a Warren
supporter. “If this is going on in other caucuses, how reliable
is it?”
“We had to do two
hours of training so we knew how it was supposed to work,” said
Diane Bean, another Warren backer, who wondered whether volunteers
were trained well enough.
“This is like a badly
organized middle school assembly,” Harris said. “As a young
voter, this is very disappointing.”
The circumstances in Mario will
likely lead to Warren challenging the results.
Volunteers messed up. And
their late efforts to pull Marion 5 out of the dumpster fire might
have fared better if more people had waited to go from being
caucusgoers to home-goers. By the time the problem was identified,
too few Democrats remained in the gym for a replay call.
“We regret the
confusion,” said Barb Wild, a caucus volunteer. She encouraged
Warren supporters to document the problems so lessons can be learned.
A complaint is likely.
The takeaway: Even once they’ve
finished counting the votes, millions of Americans will likely refuse
to recognize this as a legitimate reflection of the ‘will of the
people’

morning has arrived…and still no results.
Did the Iowa Democratic Party hire
Morgan Stanley to build the vote-counting app for its
first-in-the-nation caucus? Because last night’s catastrophe made the
Facebook IPO*** look like an organized, orderly market debut.
After the party badly botched the
rollout of the results of last night’s Iowa Caucus following “quality
control issues” involving the transmission of data from caucus
sites to the main reporting headquarters,
millions are accusing the Democratic Party of once again trying to
rig the nominating contest to favor establishment candidates while
undermining the insurgent campaign of ‘Democratic Socialist’ Bernie
Sanders.
This technical glitch has led to
one of the most electoral catastrophes in recent memory: Roughly 8
hours after results were expected, there’s still nothing, and the
entire process has been plunged into chaos. The issue erupted after
the Iowa Democratic Party announced late Tuesday that it had found
‘inconsistencies’ in its electronic data, prompting them to audit it
against the paper trail, according to NBC
News.
Party chair Troy Price
said the party is “validating every piece of data we have
against our paper trail. That system is taking longer than expected,
but it’s in place to ensure we are eventually able to report results
with full confidence.”
The state Democratic
party’s communications director, Mandy McClure, said on Monday night
that there were “inconsistencies” in the reporting of three
sets of results. “In addition to the tech systems being used to
tabulate results, we are also using photos of results and a paper
trail to validate that all results match and ensure that we have
confidence and accuracy in the numbers we report,” McClure said.
This is simply a reporting
issue. The app did not go down, and this is not a hack or an
intrusion. The underlying data and paper trail is sound and will
simply take time to further report the results,” McClure added.
Needless to say, polls released in
recent weeks showed Bernie Sanders surging ahead, cementing him as
the front-runner heading into the race. And then this glitch happens,
allowing Pete Buttigieg, Amy Klobuchar and Joe Biden to steal the
caucus-evening spotlight with the help of their cronies in the media.
After watching Democrats rig the
2016 primary in favor of Hillary Clinton, thousands have taken to
twitter to express their frustration. If the caucus was an
unmitigated disaster (made even more hilarious by the fact that all
of the candidates invested months of their time and hundreds of
millions of dollars trying to clinch the all-important first
nominating contest), it was also a wellspring for political humor.
The main takeaway: Is it merely a
coincidence that this epic confusion emerged after Bernie’s surge in
the polls?

Dacht
dat is ik het niet goed had gelezen, de kop van een nieuwe petitie
van het Care2 team. De Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(een onafhankelijk VS overheidsorgaan, althans dat zou zo moeten
zijn), heeft haar medewerkers geboden de volgende woorden niet meer
te gebruiken: transgender, fetus, vulnarable, entitlement, diversity,
evidence-based en science-based…….
Kortom
de wetenschappers van dit instituut mogen in het vervolg bijvoorbeeld
niet meer aangeven dat hun gegevens zijn gebaseerd op praktijk bewijs, of op een wetenschappelijk bewijs…… Het verbod van de woorden transgender en fetus maakt
duidelijk dat de landelijke VS overheid en dan m.n. de Trump
administratie, niet langer duldt dat de centra voor preventie en
ziekte controle spreken over mensen die transgender zijn, een zonde volgens o.a. het christelijk geloof…… Het
verbod op het woord foetus geeft aan dat men niet langer wenst te
worden geconfronteerd met abortus, ook al een vloek in de kerk, abortus dat intussen in een aantal staten
is verboden, zoals daar ook vergoedingen voor anticonceptie zijn geschrapt……(en zelfs vaak niet meer zijn te krijgen….)
Dat het
woord ‘kwetsbaar’ (vulnarable) niet meer gebruikt mag worden duidt
erop dat men niet langer onderzoeken wenst naar de gezondheid van
kwetsbare groepen, die in veel gevallen niet verzekerd zijn, of die
binnenkort hun ziektekostenverzekering kwijt zullen raken…… Het
is duidelijk dat deze kwetsbare groepen zo’n slechte gezondheid
zullen ontwikkelen dat ze zullen overlijden en kijk dat hang je niet
aan de grote klok….. (althans als je een psychopathische rotschoft
bent die over lijken gaat, ofwel als jouw naam Donald Trump is….)
‘Logisch’ het is verkiezingsjaar en dan wil je je achterban niet
confronteren met verhalen over mensen die het financieel even slecht hebben als jouw kiezers en
die nu overlijden als gevolg van uiterst inhumaan beleid, of beter
gezegd: het reli-fascistisch beleid gevoerd door die Trump administratie…….. (waar je als kiezer op deze ploert mede verantwoordelijk bent voor de doden die door zijn inhumane wanbeleid vallen….)
Onder mijn schrijven de
Care2 petitie die wij helaas niet kunnen tekenen. Echter belangrijk
genoeg om onder de aandacht te brengen daar veel prominente VVD’ers al een paar
decennia jaloers kijken naar wat men in de VS de burgers aandoet en
dat ten gunste van de (super) welgestelden (ofwel
belastingverlagingen voor deze groep en de ondernemers die daartoe
behoren….)….. Met de belastinghervorming door Rutte 3 wordt de grote onderlaag
in ons land getroffen, terwijl de welgestelden een belastingverlaging
krijgen….. (inderdaad naar voorbeeld van de VS en dan zitten er 2 christelijke partijen in Rutte 3, het CDA en de Christen Unie, een afbraakkabinet dat wordt gesteund door de fundi-christelijke partij, de SGP……)
Moet je
nagaan dan zijn er nog mensen die zeggen dat er in Nederland geen
grote inkomensverschillen bestaan, een leugen, die als deze door
politici wordt gedaan, vervolgd zou moeten worden!! Ga maar na wat je
overhoudt van een inkomen op het minimumloonniveau, waar maar liefst
37% aan belasting afgaat en waarvan je vervolgens een achterlijk hoge
huur moet betalen (woonkosten die bijna 10% hoger liggen dan die van
kopers), een belachelijk dure zorgpolis, de kosten voor gas en licht
(veel huurders hebben een slecht geïsoleerd huis, deze mensen
betalen zich scheel aan de kosten voor gasgebruik) en dan nog alle belastingen die van zo’n klein inkomen moeten worden betaald….. Vergelijk dat eens met mensen die meer dan 2 ton verdienen en die i.p.v. 51% dit jaar 49% gaan betalen……
Terug naar het onderwerp van dit bericht: met het
verbod op de genoemde woorden gaat de VS verder op het doodlopende
pad van een fascistische reli-politiestaat, een staat die niet alleen in
eigen land terreur uitoefent, maar ook op meerdere plekken over de
wereld….. Terreur waarbij in het buitenland, deze eeuw alleen al, meer dan 2,5
miljoen mensen door de VS werden vermoord in haar illegale oorlogen, of door één van haar

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is the leading
public health agency in the U.S. government. It does everything from
conducting research on cures for illnesses to providing public
service information. To be clear, its
mission is based on science and health — not politics or
religion.
Yet
this year, the CDC told its scientists and other employees that they
are now officially banned from using seven specific words or phrases
in any of the official documents they’re preparing for their 2020
budget. You might think these words must be focused on outdated or
unscientific ways of thinking. Nope!
The
seven phrases that CDC staff are prohibited from using are: “vulnerable,”
“entitlement,” “diversity,” “transgender,”
“fetus,” “evidence-based” and
“science-based.”
This
new rule shows how fundamentalism is creeping further and further
into our nation’s government — and that is truly frightening. Tell
the CDC they must backtrack on their ideological hamstringing of the
nation’s top scientists.
When
one CDC analyst found out about the new rules during a meeting,
they said it was an eye-popping-out-of-the-head type moment.
According to the analyst, people in the room were “incredulous,”
responding to the agency leaders by saying, “‘Are you serious?
Are you kidding?'”
This same analyst said they could not
remember a single previous occasion when the CDC had forbidden words
or phrases like these from being used in budget documents.
It’s
exceedingly clear that the CDC only banned these seven words as part
of the Trump administration’s aggressive right-wing agenda. This
is a direct attack on the LGBTQ community, reproductive rights, civil
rights, and of course, on scientific and health research
overall.
The
CDC has no business muzzling its health researchers or turning
science into some sort of fanatical, theocratic arm of the state. Demand that the
CDC reverse course on its prohibited words list and just focus on the
nation’s health!

Met de regelmaat van de klok hoor je in
de media dat Trump misschien wel een rare snuiter is, maar dat hij
bijzonder goed is voor de
economie, zie de aandelenkoersen de de groei van het bruto
binnenlands product. Echter daar valt nog wel het
e.e.a. op te merken volgens Joseph Stiglitz, Nobelprijswinnaar
economie en professor aan de Columbia Universiteit. Het zegt niets
over hoe het gaat met de gewone burgers en duurzaamheid. Dit
is niet alleen belangrijk voor de volksgezondheid, dierenwelzijn, het
klimaat en het milieu, maar ook voor het voortbestaan van de wereld
zoals wij die kennen. Voorts moet niet vergeten worden dat de klimaatverandering een grote kostenpost is, niet alleen wat betreft een enorm aantal mensenlevens, maar ook gigantische kapitalen aan schade veroorzaakt…..

Uiteraard zijn de zaken die ik hiervoor
noemde onderdeel van de laatste, maar het kan niet vaak genoeg gezegd
worden dat we de wereld naar de kloten helpen…… Ondanks alle
mooie praatjes op klimaattoppen, wordt er ook in de rest van het
westen weinig of niets gedaan om de klimaatverandering af te remmen
en tevens de luchtvervuiling tegen te gaan, een vervuiling die
zovelen het leven kost…. (in Nederland sterven er jaarlijks 18.000
mensen jaren eerder door de uitstoot van auto’s en dat na een akelig
ziekbed, om maar te zwijgen over het grote aantal kinderen dat
jaarlijks door diezelfde uitstoot long- en/of luchtwegklachten
oploopt….) Er worden nu zelfs praatjes verkondigd dat de nieuwste
dieselmotoren goed zijn voor het de luchtkwaliteit, ‘vergetend’ dat
de vervuiling die er nog steeds uitkomt, vooral gebonden is aan het
zwaar kankerverwekkende ultrafijnstof……

It is becoming
conventional wisdom that US President Donald Trump will be tough to
beat in November, because, whatever reservations about him voters may
have, he has been good for the American economy. Nothing could be
further from the truth.

2020 “Information
Clearing House”
– As
the world’s business elites trek to Davos for their annual
gathering, people should be asking a simple question: Have they
overcome their infatuation with US President Donald Trump?
Two years ago, a few
rare corporate leaders were concerned about climate change, or upset
at Trump’s misogyny and bigotry. Most, however, were celebrating
the president’s tax cuts for billionaires and corporations and
looking forward to his efforts to deregulate the economy. That would
allow businesses to pollute the air more, get more Americans hooked
on opioids, entice more children to eat their diabetes-inducing
foods, and engage in the sort of financial shenanigans that brought
on the 2008 crisis.
Today, many corporate
bosses are still talking about the continued GDP growth and record
stock prices. But neither GDP nor the Dow is a good measure of
economic performance.
Neither tells us what’s happening to ordinary
citizens’ living standards or anything about sustainability. In
fact, US economic performance over the past four years is Exhibit A
in the indictment against relying on these indicators.
To get a good reading
on a country’s economic health, start by looking at the health of
its citizens. If they are happy and prosperous, they will be healthy
and live longer. Among developed countries, America sits at the
bottom in this regard. US life expectancy, already relatively low,
fell in each of the first two years of Trump’s presidency, and in
2017, midlife mortality reached its highest rate since World War II.
This is not a surprise, because no president has worked harder to
make sure that more Americans lack health insurance. Millions have
lost their coverage, and the uninsured rate has risen, in just two
years, from
10.9% to 13.7%.
One reason for
declining life expectancy in America is what Anne Case and Nobel
laureate economist Angus
Deaton call deaths of despair, caused by alcohol, drug overdoses,
and suicide. In 2017 (the most recent year for which good data are
available), such deaths stood at almost
four times their 1999 level.
The only time I have
seen anything like these declines in health – outside of war or
epidemics – was when I was chief economist of the World Bank and
found out that mortality and morbidity data confirmed what our
economic indicators suggested about the dismal state of the
post-Soviet Russian economy.
Trump may be a good
president for the top 1% – and especially for the top 0.1% – but
he has not been good for everyone else. If fully implemented, the
2017 tax cut will result in tax increases
for most households in the second, third, and fourth income
quintiles.
Given tax cuts that
disproportionately benefit the ultrarich and corporations, it should
come as no surprise that there was no
significant change in the median US household’s disposable
income between 2017 and 2018 (again, the most recent year with
good data).
The lion’s share of the increase in GDP is also going
to those at the top. Real median weekly
earnings are just 2.6% above their level when Trump took office.
And these increases have not offset long periods of wage stagnation.
For example, the median wage of a full-time male worker (and those
with full-time jobs are the lucky ones) is still more than 3%
below what it was 40 years ago. Nor has there been much progress
on reducing racial disparities: in the third quarter of 2019, median
weekly earnings for black men working full-time were less
than three-quarters the level for white men.
Making matters worse,
the growth that has occurred is not environmentally sustainable –
and even less so thanks to the Trump administration’s gutting of
regulations that have passed stringent cost-benefit analyses. The air
will be less breathable, the water less drinkable, and the planet
more subject to climate change. In fact, losses related to climate
change have already reached new highs in the US, which has suffered
more property damage than any other country – reaching some
1.5% of GDP in 2017.
The tax cuts were
supposed to spur a new wave of investment. Instead, they triggered an
all-time record
binge of share buybacks – some $800 billion in 2018 – by some
of America’s most profitable companies, and led to record
peacetime deficits (almost $1 trillion in fiscal 2019) in a
country supposedly near full employment. And even with weak
investment, the US had to borrow massively abroad: the most recent
data show foreign
borrowing at nearly $500 billion a year, with an increase of more
than 10% in America’s net indebtedness position in
one year alone.
Likewise, Trump’s
trade wars, for all their sound and fury, have not reduced the US
trade deficit, which was one-quarter higher in 2018 than it was in
2016. The 2018 goods deficit was the largest
on record. Even the deficit in trade with China was up
almost a quarter from 2016. The US did get a new North American
trade agreement, without the investment agreement provisions that the
Business Roundtable wanted, without the provisions raising drug
prices that the pharmaceutical companies wanted, and with better
labor and environmental provisions. Trump, a self-proclaimed master
deal maker, lost on almost every front in his negotiations with
congressional Democrats, resulting in a slightly improved trade
arrangement.
And despite Trump’s
vaunted promises to bring manufacturing jobs back to the US, the
increase in manufacturing employment is still lower than it was under
his predecessor, Barack Obama, once the post-2008 recovery set in,
and is still markedly below its pre-crisis level. Even the
unemployment rate, at a 50-year low, masks economic fragility. The employment
rate for working-age males and females, while rising, has increased
less than during the Obama recovery, and is still significantly
below that of other developed countries.
The pace of job creation
is also markedly slower than it was under Obama.
Again, the low
employment rate is not a surprise, not least because unhealthy people
can’t work. Moreover, those on disability benefits, in prison –
the US incarceration
rate has increased more than sixfold since 1970, with some two
million people currently behind bars – or so discouraged that
they are not actively seeking jobs are not counted as “unemployed.”
But, of course, they are not employed. Nor is it a surprise that a
country that doesn’t provide affordable childcare or guarantee
family leave would have lower female employment – adjusted for
population, more than ten percentage points lower – than other
developed countries.
Even judging by GDP,
the Trump economy falls short. Last quarter’s growth was just 2.1%,
far less than the 4%, 5%, or even 6% Trump promised
to deliver, and even less than the 2.4% average of Obama’s second
term. That is a remarkably poor performance considering the stimulus
provided by the $1 trillion deficit and ultra-low interest rates.
This is not an accident, or just a matter of bad luck: Trump’s
brand is uncertainty, volatility, and prevarication, whereas trust,
stability, and confidence are essential for growth. So is equality,
according to the International Monetary Fund.
So, Trump deserves
failing grades not just on essential tasks like upholding democracy
and preserving our planet. He should not get a pass on the economy,
either.

in ellende verkeren, bijvoorbeeld het afstaan van je bed aan vluchtelingen en mensen die worden vervolgd, waarmee uiteraard ook wordt bedoeld dat je je medemens
op alle mogelijke manieren moet helpen, zelfs het bezoeken van gevangenen valt onder die ‘noemer…..’
De
‘mainstream’ christelijke kerk, zeker in de VS, staat achter: -de
illegale oorlogen die de VS voert, -de doodstraf (wat een verschil met wat jezus volgens het nieuwe testament zou hebben gezegd >> je andere wang toekeren als je wordt geslagen), -het groot en doodmartelen van
dieren in de intensieve veehouderij (dieren zijn volgens christenen NB ‘gods schepping’), -het
leegplunderen bodemschatten en van de zeeën, -het verbranden
van fossiele brandstoffen ook al gaat de aarde (alweer ‘gods
schepping’) daardoor naar de gallemiezen en overlijden er grote aantallen mensen alleen al aan de langdurige inademing van auto-uitstoot, om nog maar te zwijgen over de grote aantalllen mensen die zijn omgekomen door de gevolgen van de klimaatverandering, die volgens veel christenen niet eens plaatsvindt…., -het uitbuiten van
werknemers in verre buitenlanden, enz. enz. Stuk voor stuk zaken die
zeker in het nieuwe testament worden beoordeeld als onchristelijk……

Clearing House” – The greatest moral failing of the liberal
Christian church was its refusal, justified in the name of tolerance
and dialogue, to denounce the followers of the Christian right as
heretics. By tolerating the intolerant it ceded religious legitimacy
to an array of con artists, charlatans and demagogues and their
cultish supporters. It stood by as the core Gospel message—concern
for the poor and the oppressed—was perverted into a magical world
where God and Jesus showered believers with material wealth and
power. The white race, especially in the United States, became God’s
chosen agent. Imperialism and war became divine instruments for
purging the world of infidels and barbarians, evil itself.
Capitalism, because God blessed the righteous with wealth and power
and condemned the immoral to poverty and suffering, became shorn of
its inherent cruelty and exploitation. The iconography and symbols of
American nationalism became intertwined with the iconography and
symbols of the Christian faith. The mega-pastors, narcissists who
rule despotic, cult-like fiefdoms, make millions of dollars by using
this heretical belief system to prey on the mounting despair and
desperation of their congregations, victims of neoliberalism
and deindustrialization.
These believers find in Donald Trump a reflection of themselves, a
champion of the unfettered greed, cult of masculinity, lust for
violence, white supremacy, bigotry, American chauvinism, religious
intolerance, anger, racism and conspiracy theories that define the
central beliefs of the Christian right. When I wrote “American
Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America” I was
deadly serious about the term “fascists.”
The
evangelical magazine Christianity Today, by stating the obvious about
Trump, that he is immoral and should be removed from office, became
the latest recipient of the Christian right’s vicious and
hypocritical backlash. Nearly 200 evangelical leaders, including
former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, former Rep. Michele
Bachmann, Jerry
Falwell Jr. and Ralph
Reed, signed a
joint letter denouncing the Christianity
Today editorial, written by the magazine’s president, Timothy
Dalrymple, and outgoing Editor Mark Galli.
Evangelical
Christians who criticize Trump are as swiftly disappeared from the
ranks as Republican politicians who criticize Trump. Trump received
80% of the white evangelical vote in the 2016 presidential election,
and in a poll this month 90%
of Republicans said they opposed impeachment and ouster of the
president. Among Republicans who identify as white evangelical
Protestants, that
number rises to 99%.
Tens
of millions of Americans live hermetically sealed inside the vast
media and educational edifice controlled by Christian fascists. In
this world, miracles are real, Satan, allied with secular humanists
and Muslims, is seeking to destroy America, and Trump is God’s
anointed vessel to build the Christian nation and cement into place a
government that instills “biblical values.” These “biblical
values” include banning abortion, protecting the traditional
family, turning the Ten Commandments into secular law, crushing
“infidels,” especially Muslims, indoctrinating children in
schools with “biblical” teachings and thwarting sexual license,
which includes any sexual relationship other than in a marriage
between a man and a woman. Trump is routinely compared by evangelical
leaders to the biblical king Cyrus, who
rebuilt the temple in Jerusalem and restored the Jews to the city.
Trump has filled his
own ideological void with Christian fascism. He has elevated members
of the Christian right to prominent positions, including Mike Pence
to the vice presidency, Mike Pompeo to secretary of state, Betsy
DeVos to secretary of education, Ben Carson to secretary of
housing and urban development, William
Barr to attorney general, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh to the
Supreme Court and the televangelist Paula
White to his Faith
and Opportunities Initiative. More importantly, Trump has handed
the Christian right veto and appointment power over key positions in
government, especially in the federal courts.
He has installed 133
district court judges out of 677 total, 50 appeals court judges out
of 179 total, and two U.S. Supreme Court justices out of nine. Almost
all of these judges were, in effect, selected by the Federalist
Society and the Christian right. Many of the extremists who make
up the judicial appointees have been rated as unqualified by the
American Bar Association, the country’s largest nonpartisan
coalition of lawyers. Trump has moved to ban Muslim immigrants and
rolled back civil rights legislation. He has made war on reproductive
rights by restricting abortion and defunding Planned Parenthood. He
has stripped away LGBTQ rights. He has ripped down the firewall
between church and state by revoking the Johnson
Amendment, which prohibits churches, which are tax-exempt, from
endorsing political candidates. His appointees throughout the
government routinely use biblical strictures to justify an array of
policy decisions including environmental deregulation, war, tax cuts
and the replacement of public schools with charter schools, an action
that permits the transfer of federal education funds to private
“Christian” schools.
I studied ethics at
Harvard Divinity School with James
Luther Adams, who had been in Germany in 1935 and 1936. Adams
witnessed the rise there of the so-called
Christian Church, which was pro-Nazi. He warned us about the
disturbing parallels between the German Christian Church and the
Christian right. Adolf Hitler was in the eyes of the German Christian
Church a volk
messiah and an instrument of God—a view similar to the one held
today about Trump by many of his white evangelical supporters. Those
demonized for Germany’s economic collapse, especially Jews and
communists, were agents of Satan.
Fascism, Adams told us, always
cloaked itself in a nation’s most cherished symbols and rhetoric.
Fascism would come to America not in the guise of stiff-armed,
marching brownshirts and Nazi swastikas but in mass recitations of
the Pledge of Allegiance, the biblical sanctification of the state
and the sacralization
of American militarism. Adams was the first person I heard label the
extremists of the Christian right as fascists. Liberals, he warned,
as in Nazi Germany, were blind to the tragic dimension of history and
radical evil. They would not react until it was too late.
Trump’s legacy will
be the empowerment of the Christian fascists. They are what comes
next. For decades they have been organizing to take power. They have
built infrastructures and organizations, including lobbying groups,
schools and universities as well as media platforms, to prepare. They
have seeded their cadre into the political system. We on the left,
meanwhile, have seen our institutions and organizations destroyed or
corrupted by corporate power.
The Christian
fascists, as in all totalitarian movements, need a crisis,
manufactured or real, in order to seize power. This crisis may be
financial. It could be triggered by a catastrophic terrorist attack.
Or it could be the result of a societal breakdown from our climate
emergency. The Christian fascists are poised to take advantage of the
chaos, or perceived chaos. They have their own version of the
brownshirts, the for-hire mercenary armies and private contractors
amassed by Christian fascists such as Erik
Prince, the brother of Betsy DeVos. The Christian fascists have
seized control of significant portions of the judiciary and
legislative branches of government. FRC
Action, the legislative affiliate of the Family
Research Council, gives 245 members of Congress a perfect 100%
for votes that support
the agenda of the Christian right. The Family Research Council,
which has called on its followers to pray that God will vanquish the
“demonic forces” behind Trump’s impeachment, is identified by
the Southern Poverty Law Center as a hate
group because of its campaigns to discriminate against the LGBTQ
community.
The ideology of the
Christian fascists panders in our decline to the primitive yearnings
for the vengeance, new glory and moral renewal that are found among
those pushed aside by deindustrialization and austerity. Reason,
facts and verifiable truth are impotent weapons against this belief
system. The Christian right is a “crisis cult.” Crisis cults
arise in most collapsing societies. They promise, through magic, to
recover the lost grandeur and power of a mythologized past. This
magical thinking banishes doubt, anxiety and feelings of
disempowerment. Traditional social hierarchies and rules, including
an unapologetic white, male supremacy, will be restored. Rituals and
behaviors including an unquestioning submission to authority and acts
of violence to cleanse the society of evil will vanquish malevolent
forces.
The Christian fascists
propagate their magical thinking through a selective literalism in
addressing the Bible. They hold up as sacrosanct biblical passages
that buttress their ideology and ignore, or grossly misinterpret, the
ones that do not. They live in a binary universe. They see themselves
as eternal victims, oppressed by dark and sinister groups seeking
their annihilation. They alone know the will of God. They alone can
fulfill God’s will.
They seek total cultural and political
domination. The secular, reality-based world, one where Satan,
miracles, destiny, angels and magic do not exist, destroyed their
lives and communities. That world took away their jobs and their
futures. It ripped apart the social bonds that once gave them
purpose, dignity and hope. In their despair they often struggled with
alcohol, drug and gambling addictions. They endured familial
breakdown, divorce, evictions, unemployment and domestic and sexual
violence. The only thing that saved them was their conversion, the
realization that God had a plan for them and would protect them.
These believers were pushed by a callous, heartless corporate society
and rapacious oligarchy into the arms of charlatans. All who speak to
them in the calm, rational language of fact and evidence are hated
and ultimately feared, for they seek to force believers back into
“the culture of death” that nearly destroyed them.
We can blunt the rise
of this Christian fascism only by reintegrating exploited and abused
Americans into society, giving them jobs with stable, sustainable
incomes, relieving their crushing personal debts, rebuilding their
communities and transforming our failed democracy into one in which
everyone has agency and a voice. We must impart to them hope, not
only for themselves but for their children.
Christian fascism is
an emotional life raft for tens of millions. It is impervious to the
education, dialogue and discourse the liberal class naively believes
can blunt or domesticate the movement. The Christian fascists, by
choice, have severed themselves from rational thought. We will not
placate or disarm this movement, bent on our destruction, by
attempting to claim that we too have Christian “values.” This
appeal only strengthens the legitimacy of the Christian fascists and
weakens our own. We will transform American society to a socialist
system that provides meaning, dignity and hope to all citizens, that
cares and nurtures the most vulnerable among us, or we will become
the victims of the Christian fascists we created.
