Schande!

Kavanaugh’s
Confirmation Traumatized American Women, Study Shows—And May Have
Made Them Less Safe

The
Supreme Court Justice’s confirmation hearings left Americans fearful
for women’s rights and safety and left many men less likely to
believe a woman’s allegations of assault

More
than six months after Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh was
confirmed by the U.S. Senate, a new study shows how women and men
were affected by revelations that the judge had been accused of
sexual assault.

The
non-partisan research firm PerryUndem
 surveyed about
1,300 people from across the country, finding that more Americans
believe Kavanaugh’s accuser, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, than did
directly after the hearings—and that most believe Kavanaugh lied
under oath about the alleged assault.

One
in four women told the company that watching the hearings in
September had caused them to re-experience past trauma. The number
was larger for Latin American women, at one in three.

And
36 percent of women said they related personally to Blasey Ford’s
testimony, in which she described Kavanaugh forcefully holding her
down on a bed at a party.

Like
the
2018
midterm elections
—in which Democrats took control
of the U.S. House—the study debunks the prediction put forward by
Republicans, including President Donald Trump, after Kavanaugh’s
confirmation that voters would turn against Democrats.

“Ultimately,
PerryUndem concludes that the Kavanaugh hearings may actually have
helped Democrats more than Republicans, noting that ‘feeling
unfavorably toward Justice Kavanaugh motivated people to vote for the
Democratic candidate for U.S. House of Representatives—above and
beyond typical factors, such as party affiliation,'”
wrote Irin
Carmon at
The
Cut
.

While
conservative commentators like NRA spokeswoman Dana
Loesch
predicted the
hearings would make American parents concerned about false assault
accusations against their sons, the study showed that most Americans
came away with new concerns for women and girls’ safety.

Forty-seven
percent said they were now more worried for girls and women, while
only 36 percent said the hearings made them concerned for boys and
men.

With
57 percent believing that Kavanaugh had lied under oath during his
confirmation hearing in September—during which he was openly
aggressive toward senators, contrasting with Blasey Ford’s emotional
but measured testimony—the judge’s confirmation left many concerned
that Kavanaugh would not maintain impartiality regarding Supreme
Court cases concerning women’s rights or sexual assault.

Around
40 percent of respondents said they worried the hearings would make
sexual assault dismissed even more by the public and law enforcement
than it already is—making women less likely to come forward, people
less likely to believe survivors, and men more likely to think they
can get away with assaulting a woman.

As
Carmon wrote, Republican men’s responses to PerryUndem’s survey may
support that.

“There
was a Kavanaugh effect à la Trump’s fulminating—it just mainly
existed among Republican men,” Carmon wrote. “PerryUndem’s
data suggests that the Kavanaugh hearing made Republican men more
sexist and less likely to believe women who say they were assaulted.
In a 2017 survey the group conducted focusing on #MeToo, 80 percent
of Republican men said they were now more likely to believe women
making accusations. After Kavanaugh, that number has sunk by 21
points.”

@RachelLarris

Kavanaugh helped Democrats at the ballot box, but among Republican men the hearing made them more sexist and less likely to believe women who say they were assaulted. (@irin always has the best news for women 🙁) https://buff.ly/2GbzZZy

Regelmatig

5
Judges Whose Sexual Assault Rulings Land Them in The Hall Of Shame

There
are a lot of decent, fair judges out there, but there are
a
lot of terrible ones too
,
especially when it comes to sexual assault cases. Far too often,
judges are making headlines for giving rapists shockingly lenient
sentences or blaming victims for their own assaults. Around the
world, judges are letting rapists off the hook and treating victims
with horrible disrespect.

A
Mexican judge cleared a man of rape because he didn’t orgasm
during the assault. In Italy, a judge acquitted a man of sexual
assault because the victim didn’t “betray emotion” during the
assault. In several cases, judges have dismissed cases because they
believed the young victims looked or acted older than they were or
that their bodies were “well-developed.”

There
were a lot of contenders for worst judges on sexual assault cases,
but these are five whose actions should land them in the Hall of
Shame.

1.
JUDGE RALPH STROTHER

Just
last week, Texas
Judge
Ralph Strother
 allowed
accused rapist and 23-year-old former frat boy
Jacob
Walter Anderson to plead no contest
 to
the lesser charge of unlawful restraint
.

Anderson
was accused of repeatedly raping his then 19-year-old victim his
fraternity threw in 2016. He then left her outside, unconscious,
face-down in her own vomit. Despite this, Anderson was offered a
plea deal which judge Strother then accepted, ignoring pleas from
the victim.

Strother
has been lenient toward rapists in at least two other cases. Earlier
this year, Strother sentenced a rapist to 30 days of jail but said he
could leave on the weekends. Another time, he allowed a rapist to
avoid jail time altogether, if he payed for his victim’s
counseling.

Care2
petition
 is
calling for Strother’s resignation.

2.
JUDGE PAUL MEYERS

A
Canadian teenager
sexually
assaulted a girl in a bathroom stall
,
injuring her so severely she was rushed to the hospital in critical
condition. The perpetrator was also convicted of sexually assaulting
another girl just a few months earlier. Judge Paul Meyers sentenced
him to two weeks behind bars, saying that the teen already faced
“social ramifications” and will not be able to graduate with his
peers.

Care2
petition
 is
demanding Meyers’ resignation.

3.
JUDGE AARON PERSKY

Who
could forget Judge Aaron Persky, who let convicted rapist
Brock
Turner serve only three months in jail

A
jury found Turner guilty of three felony sexual assault charges, and
as a result the prosecution recommended a sentence of six years in
prison, stating Turner posed a “continued threat to the community.”
Instead, Judge Persky sentenced him to only six months in county jail
because “a prison sentence would have a severe impact on him.”
Perksy has
since
been removed from the bench
 following
a recall vote.

4.
JUDGE BRETT KAVANAUGH

In
this case, the Hall of Shame nominee is both the judge and the
predator.

As
Kavanaugh was nominated for the Supreme Court,
Dr.
Christine Blasey Ford came forward
 with
allegations of sexual misconduct. Ford claimed Kavanaugh assaulted
her when they were teenagers. Following this news,
several
other women came forward
 with
allegations against Kavanaugh. Despite decent people (and many
others) all agreeing that Ford was credible, Kavanaugh was still
confirmed as a Supreme Court justice.

5.
JUDGE ROBIN CAMP

Last
year Canadian
judge
Robin Camp
 submitted
his resignation because of a 2014 case in which he asked a
19-year-old rape victim, “Why couldn’t you just keep your knees
together?” He also later told her “sex and pain sometimes go
together.” When the victim told the court that the assault occurred
in a bathroom sink, the judge asked her why she hadn’t put her
“bottom down into the basin so he couldn’t penetrate you.”

Nikki
Haley Resigns as UN Ambassador

October

(ZHE— Update
(11:00 am ET):
 During
their joint press conference, Trump offered effusive praise of Haley,
saying she earned the respect of foreign diplomats during her time as
UN ambassador. He added that “maybe” she will be coming back at
some point, and that she could have “her pick” of jobs in the
administration.

When
her turn came, Haley praised the administration’s “follow-through”
on its foreign policy aims and her success in cutting $1.3 billion
from the UN budget.

countries
may not like what we do but they respect what we do. They know that
if we say we’re going to do something we follow it through.”

In
a recap of her stint as UN ambassador, Haley praised Trump’s
decision to move the US embassy in Israelfrom Tel Aviv to Jerusalem,
saying
we
will put our embassy where we want to put our embassy.”

She
also offered praise for other senior administration figures,
including Jared and Ivanka, claiming that Jared was a “hidden
genius” for his work on the revamped Nafta deal (now officially
known as USMCA).

Before
leaving her position at the end of the year, Haley said she hopes to
make sure “everything is in the right place” for when the next
ambassador arrives. And while she “doesn’t have anything set”
on what she’s doing next, she did confirm that “no I will not be
running in 2020” adding that she’s a “believer in term limits”
and wants to give “someone else a shot.”

When
reporters pressed her about her reasons for leaving, Haley denied
that she was leaving for “personal reasons” and reiterated her
claim that she felt it was time to “step aside” and that
the
truth is I want to make sure this administration has the strongest
person to fight.”

When
reporters reverted to questioning Trump, the president said his
administration had avoided serious foreign policy pitfalls – like
the outbreak of a hot war with North Korea – that many of Trump’s
critics had warned would be all but inevitable should he set foot in
the Oval Office.

Look
at North Korea, it was a potentially devastating problem and now it’s
looking very good.”

Haley,
Trump said, played an important role in reestablishing international
respect for the US.

We
are respected again – that I can tell you. Very much respected
again. Even if you look at the votes in the United Nations – where
we would normally get no votes we are getting very strong votes now.”

He
added that the way in which Haley is leaving her position is “the
right way to do it.”

It’s
a great position – I think she’s helped make it a much better
position. I think it’s become a more glamorous position than it was
a few years ago. She’s made it a more important position. So I can
say we have very many people who want to do it and they are very good
people.”

Trump
also revealed that ‘we’re talking about three or four different
locations’ for the upcoming summit with North Korea, adding that
he’d love to remove sanctions but that “we have to get
something.”
 “Eventually
we’ll have meetings on US soil and on their soil also.

I
think North Korea is going to be a very economically successful
country. Banks are calling they’re wanting to go there…and that’s
one of the reasons we’re having very successful conversations.”

Asked
about the timeline for naming a successor to Haley, Trump said he
expects to appoint someone within the next “two or three weeks.”
Asked about the missing Saudi journalist, Trump said he knows
“nothing” about the situation but that he would be asking the
Saudis for more information.

Unable
to restrain himself from taking a shot at his former rival Hillary
Clinton, Trump answered a question about Hillary Clinton’s warnings
on how to handle Saudi Arabia with “I guess that’s why she lost.”
Meanwhile, Trump said Pompeo’s latest meeting with China
(a
meeting that ended in a dramatic public confrontation)
 went
“very well.”

Turning
to the often uncomfortable subject of the timing of a US-China trade
deal, Trump insisted that “China wants to make a deal, but they’re
not ready yet.
That’s
why I’ve canceled a couple of meetings.”

After
a few more kind words for Haley, the president wrapped up the press
conference.

While
Trump says he’s sad to see Haley go, at least one person is excited
by the news.

Update
(10:40 am ET):
Trump
has confirmed to a reporter that Haley will be leaving her post at
the end of the year, saying only that she wants to “take a break”
and that “we hate to lose her”. The president reportedly said he
will pick Haley’s replacement in “two-three weeks” or “sooner.”

  • TRUMP
SAYS HALEY HAD PREVIOUSLY SAID SHE WANTS TO TAKE A BREAK

  • TRUMP
SAYS `WE HATE TO LOSE’ HALEY, WILL BE LEAVING AT YEAR-END

  • TRUMP
SAYS WILL NAME HALEY SUCCESSOR IN 2-3 WEEKS OR SOONER

The
president added that Haley told him ‘six months ago’ that she
would be leaving at the two-year mark.

Jennifer Epstein

@jeneps

Trump says Haley will leave the UN and administration at the end of the year but would be happy to have her back in any capacity, per @justinsink in the Oval. Trump says she told him 6 months ago that she wanted to leave at the 2-year mark.

Haley
confirms that she will depart on good terms and that she will
campaign for Trump in 2020.

Replying to @JenniferJJacobs

TRUMP says Haley “has been very special to me” and “is a fantastic person.”

Hate to lose her, he says.

She can come back in any capacity, he says.

HALEY: “No, I’m not running in 2020.”

She says she will campaign for TRUMP in 2020.

”It has been the honor of a lifetime” to be UN ambassador, she says.

Unsurprisingly,
rumors are circulating in the White House press corp that the timing
of Haley’s resignation is “suspicious” and may have something
to do with the Brett Kavanaugh controversy.

Jennifer Jacobs

@JenniferJJacobs

Exactly.

I have no indication Nikki Haley resigned because of discontent over Kavanaugh’s confirmation, but the timing hints that — and White House aides are aware of that.

Jacqueline Alemany

@JaxAlemany

Sources close to the WH echo this sentiment — that the timing doesn’t make sense. A source adds that it allows people to say Kavanaugh might have played a role. https://twitter.com/JenniferJJacobs/status/1049666864656343041

Others
are speculating that South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham could soon
take a job in the Trump cabinet (possibly attorney general?) after
the midterms, allowing Haley to fill his old senate seat.

In
a statement to reporters, Haley said her experience as UN ambassador
has been “the honor of a lifetime” and that the US would put its
embassy where it wants and that “there are a number of people who
would like to do this…it is a much more glamorous position than it
was a few years ago.”

Two
weeks after President Trump issued another fiery rebuke of globalism,
the United Nations and its attendant institutions during his second
speech before the UN General Assembly,
Axios is
reporting that the president has accepted the resignation of UN
Ambassador Nikki Haley.

Haley,
the former governor of South Carolina who has been with the
administration since the beginning, reportedly discussed her
resignation with Trump during a visit to the White House last
week.
Her
desire to leave her post apparently shocked several senior
administration officials. Haley was an early and frequent critic of
then-candidate Trump before she conceded and joined his
administration.

Haley
refused to comment on reports of her resignation after walking by a
group of reporters in the West Wing.

Alex Mallin

Haley just walked by a group of reporters in the West Wing, I asked her if the report is true and she did not answer. She walked through a door leading towards the West Wing.

But
in what appeared to be a confirmation of the report, Press Secretary

Trump also teased the 10:30 meeting with a tweet.

Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump

Big announcement with my friend Ambassador Nikki Haley in the Oval Office at 10:30am.

Readers
can watch the press conference on the live feed below:

Most
recently, Haley oversaw the US’s withdrawal from a UN human rights
council over its “chronic bias against Israel.”

I
want to make it crystal clear that this step is not a retreat from
human rights commitments,” Haley said at the time. “On the
contrary, we take this step because our commitment does not allow us
to remain a part of a hypocritical and self-serving organization that
makes a mockery of human rights.”

At
one point, Haley was rumored to be a top pick to replace Rex
Tillerson as Secretary of State – a job that ultimately went to
Secretary Mike Pompeo. Media reports detailed a fraught relationship
between Haley and Tillerson as they jockeyed to be the face of the
administration’s foreign policy. Tillerson’s aides reportedly
asked her to pre-clear any public remarks with Washington.

While
she has mostly avoided conflict with Trump since joining the
administration, Trump did accuse her of getting “ahead of the
curve” after she said earlier this year that the administration
would impose sanctions on Russian companies found to be aiding the
Syrian government’s chemical weapons program after a deadly
chemical attack in April, as
the
New York Times
reminds
us.

On
April 15, Ms. Haley announced that the administration would place
sanctions on Russian companies found to be assisting Syria’s
chemical weapons program — part of a menu of options to retaliate
against a suspected gas attack that killed dozens on April 7. But the
next day,
the
White House announced that Mr. Trump had decided not to go forward
with the sanctions, contradicting what Ms. Haley had said. The White
House said she had gotten “ahead of the curve.”

She
also broke with the administration line when she said last December
that women accusing Trump of sexual improprieties deserved “to be
heard” and that “they should be dealt with.”

And
in December 2017, Ms. Haley said that women who had accused Mr. Trump
of sexual misconduct “should be heard,” a surprising break from
the administration’s longstanding assertion that the accusations
were false and that voters rightly dismissed them when they elected
Mr. Trump.
They
should be heard, and they should be dealt with,” Ms. Haley told
CBS. “And I think we heard from them prior to the election. And I
think any woman who has felt violated or felt mistreated in any way,
they have every right to speak up.”

As
Axios pointed out, Haley wrote an op-ed last month challenging
allegations in the infamous anonymous NYT op-ed alleging that a group
of senior administration officials had formed an internal
“resistance” movement against Trump to protect the nation from
his most dangerous impulses.

the

O’Day
O’Day noemt een groot aantal voorbeelden
O’Day vergeet het begrip Deep State,

Trump
Administration Follows Corporate Media Playbook for War With Iran

(FAIR.org— Three
years ago, as Americans debated the Joint Comprehensive Plan of
Action (JCPOA) agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran—popularly
known as “the Iran deal”—I highlighted a troubling media trend
on
FAIR.org (8/20/15):
“For nearly all commentators, regardless of their position, war is
the only alternative to that position.”

In
the months since US President Donald Trump tore up the JCPOA
agreement, his administration has been trying to make good on
corporate media’s collective prediction. Last week, John Bolton
(
BBC9/26/18),
Trump’s national security advisor and chief warmonger, told Iran’s
leaders and the world that there would be “hell to pay” if they
dare to “cross us.”

John
Bolton (
BBC9/26/18):
“Let my message today be clear: We are watching, and we will come
after you.”

That
Bolton’s bellicose statements do not send shockwaves of pure horror
across a
debt-strapped and war-weary United
States is thanks in large part to incessant priming for war,
facilitated by corporate media across the entire political spectrum,
with a particular focus on Iran.

Back
in 2015, while current “resistance” stalwarts like the
Washington
Post
(4/2/15)

and Politico (8/11/15)
warned us that war with Iran was the most likely alternative to the
JCPOA, conservative standard-bearers such as
Fox
News
(7/14/15)
and the
Washington
Times

(
8/10/15)
foretold that war with Iran was the agreement’s most likely
outcome. Three years hence, this dynamic has not changed.

Cartoonist
Patrick Chappatte (
New
York Times
5/10/18)
presents Trump and Bolton’s “deal” for Iran.

To
experience the full menu of US media’s single-mindedness about
Iran, one need only buy a subscription to the
New
York Times
.
After Trump withdrew from the JCPOA, the
Times
editorial board (
5/8/18)
wrote that his move would “lay conditions for a possible wider war
in the Middle East.” Susan Rice (
New
York Times
5/8/18),
President Barack Obama’s national security advisor, agreed: “We
could face the choice of going to war or acquiescing to a
nuclear-armed Iran,” she warned. Cartoonist Patrick Chappatte (
New
York Times
5/10/18)
was characteristically more direct, penning an image of Trump
alongside Bolton, holding a fictitious new agreement featuring the
singular, ultimate word: “WAR.”

On
the other hand, calling Trump’s turn against JCPOA a “courageous
decision,”
Times columnist
Bret Stephens (
5/8/18)
explained that the move was meant to force the Iranian government to
make a choice: Either accede to US demands or “pursue their nuclear
ambitions at the cost of economic ruin and possible war.” (Hardly
courageous, when we all know there is no chance that Trump or
Stephens would enlist should war materialize.)

Trump’s latest
antics
 at
the United Nations have spurred a wave of similar reaction across
corporate media. Describing his threat to “totally destroy North
Korea” at the UN General Assembly last year as “pointed and
sharp,”
Fox
News
anchor
Eric Shawn (
9/23/18)
asked Bill Richardson, an Obama ally and President Bill Clinton’s
ambassador to the UN, whether Trump would take the same approach
toward Iran. “That aggressive policy we have with Iran is going to
continue,” Richardson reassured the audience, “and I don’t
think Iran is helping themselves.” In other words, if the United
States starts a war with Iran, it’s totally Iran’s fault.

Politico (9/23/18),
meanwhile, reported that Trump “is risking a potential war with
Iran unless he engages the Islamist-led country using diplomacy.”
In other words, if the United States starts a war with Iran, it’s
totally Trump’s fault. Rice (
New
York Times
9/26/18)
reiterated her view that Trump’s rhetoric “presages the prospect
of war in the Persian Gulf.” Whoever would be the responsible party
is up for debate, but that war is in our future is apparently all but
certain.

Politico’s
article cited a
statement signed
by such esteemed US experts on war-making as Madeleine Albright, who
presided over Clinton’s
inhuman
sanctions
 against
Iraq in the ’90s, and Ryan Crocker, former ambassador for
presidents George W. Bush and Obama to some of America’s favorite
killing fields: Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Syria.  James
Clapper, Obama’s National Intelligence Director, who also signed
the letter, played an
important
role
 in
trumping up WMD evidence against Saddam Hussein before the United
States invaded Iraq in 2003. When it comes to US aggression, they’re
the experts.

Vanity
Fair
 (9/26/18)
interviewed John Glaser of the Cato Institute, who called Trump’s
strategy “pathetic,” and also warned that it forebodes war. In an
effort to “one-up Obama,” Glaser explained, Trump’s plan is “to
apply extreme economic pressure and explicit threats of war in order
to get Iran to capitulate.” Sound familiar? As Glaser implies, this
was
exactly
Obama’s strategy
,
only then it wasn’t seen as “pathetic,” but rather reasonable,
and the sole means for preventing the war that every US pundit and
politician saw around the corner (
The
Hill
8/9/15).

When
everyone decides that war is the only other possibility, it starts to
look like an inevitability. But even when they aren’t overtly
stoking war fever against Iran, corporate media prime the
militaristic pump in more subtle yet equally disturbing ways.

Benjamin
Netanyahu speaks for the Iranian people on
CNN (9/29/18).

First
among these is the near-complete erasure of Iranian voices from US
airwaves (
FAIR.org7/24/15).
Rather than ask Iranians directly, national outlets
like
CNN (9/29/18)
prefer to invite the prime minister of Israel,
serial
Iran alarmist
 and
regional pariah Benjamin Netanyahu, to speak for them. During a
jovial discussion this weekend over whether regime change and/or
economic collapse is Iran’s most likely fate, Netanyahu explained
to the audience that, either way,

The
ones who will be happiest if that happens are the people of Iran.”
No people of Iran were on hand to confirm or deny this assessment.

Bloomberg (9/30/18)
similarly wanted to know, “What’s not to like about Trump’s
Iran oil sanctions?” Julian Lee gleefully reported that “they are
crippling exports from the Islamic Republic, at minimal cost to the
US.” One might think the
toll
sanctions take
 on
innocent Iranians would be something not to like,
but
Bloomberg merely
worried that, notwithstanding the windfall for US refineries, “oil
at $100 a barrel would be bad news for drivers everywhere—including
those in the US.”

Another
prized tactic is to
whitewash
Saudi Arabia
,
Iran’s chief geopolitical rival, whose genocidal destruction of
Yemen is made possible by the United States, about which corporate
media remain overwhelmingly silent (
FAIR.org, 7/23/18).
Iran’s involvement in Yemen, which both Trump and the
New
York Times
(9/12/18)
describe as “malign behavior,” is a principal justification for
US support of Saudi Arabia, including the
 US-supplied
bombs
 that
recently ended the brief lives of over 40 Yemeni schoolchildren.
Lockheed Martin’s stock is
up
34 percent
from
Trump’s inauguration day.

Corporate
media go beyond a simple coverup of Saudi crimes to evangelize their
leadership as the liberal antidote to Iran’s “theocracy.” Who
can forget Thomas Friedman’s revolting puff piece for the Saudi
crown prince Mohammad bin Salman? Extensively quoting Salman (
New
York Times
11/23/17),
who refers to Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as “the new Hitler of
the Middle East,” Friedman nevertheless remains pessimistic about
whether “MBS and his team” can see their stand against Iran
through, as “dysfunction and rivalries within the Sunni Arab world
generally have prevented forming a unified front.” Oh well, every
team needs cheerleaders, and Friedman isn’t just a fair-weather
fan.

While
Friedman (
New
York Times
5/15/18)
believes that Trump has drawn “some needed attention to Iran’s
bad behavior,” for him pivotal questions remain unanswered, such as
“who is going to take over in Tehran if the current Islamic regime
collapses?” One immediate fix he proposed was to censure Iran’s
metaphorical “occupation” of Syria, Iraq and Lebanon. Isn’t
this ironic coming from an unapologetic propagandist for Washington’s
decades-long, non-metaphorical occupation of the two countries to the
east and west of Iran (
FAIR.org12/9/15)?

In
a surprising break from corporate media convention,
USA
Today
 (9/26/18)
published a column on US/Iran relations written by an actual Iranian.
Reflecting on the
CIA-orchestrated
coup
 against
Iran’s elected government in 1953, Azadeh Shahshahani, who was born
four days after the 1979 revolution there, wrote:

I
often wonder what would have happened if that coup had not worked, if
[Prime Minister] Mosaddeq had been allowed to govern, if democracy
had been allowed to flourish.”

It
is time for the US government to stop intervening in Iran and let the
Iranian people determine their own destiny,” she beseeched readers.

Code
Pink’s Medea Benjamin confronts the head of Trump’s “Iran
Action Group” (
Real
News
9/21/18).

Shahshahani’s
call is supported by some who have rejected corporate media’s war
propaganda and have gone to extreme lengths to have their
perspectives heard. Anti-war activist and Code Pink  founder
Medea Benjamin was recently forcibly removed after she upstaged Brian
Hook, leader of Trump’s Iran Action Group, on live TV, calling his
press conference “the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen”
(
Real
News
9/21/18).
Benjamin implored the audience: “Let’s talk about Saudi Arabia.
Is that who our allies are?”

How
dare you bring up the issue of Yemen,” admonished Benjamin as she
was dragged from the room. “It’s the Saudi bombing that is
killing most people in Yemen. So let’s get real. No more war! Peace
with Iran!” Code Pink is
currently
petitioning
 the New
York Times
 and Washington
Post
 to
stop propagandizing war.

Sadly,
no matter whom you ask in corporate media, be they spokespeople for
“Trump’s America” or “the resistance,” peace remains an
elusive choice in the US political imagination. And while the public
was focused last week on Supreme Court nominee
Brett
Kavanaugh’s
perjurious
testimony
,
the Senate finalized a
$674
billion “defense” budget
.
Every single Democrat in the chamber voted in favor of the
bill,
explicitly
naming Iran
 as
persona non grata in the United States’
world-leading
arms supply network
,
which has seen a 25 percent increase in exports since Obama took
office in 2009.

The
US government’s imperial ambitions are perhaps its only truly
bipartisan project—what the
New
York Times
 euphemistically
refers to as “globalism.” Nowhere was this on fuller display than
at the funeral for Republican Sen. John McCain (
FAIR.org, 9/11/18),
where politicians of all stripes were tripping over themselves to
produce the best accolades for a man who
infamously
sang
“bomb
bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran” to the tune of a Beach Boys song.

McCain’s
bloodlust was nothing new. Nearly a hundred years ago, after the
West’s imperial competition culminated in the most destructive war
the world had ever seen, the brilliant American sociologist and
anti-colonial author WEB Du Bois
wrote,
“This is not Europe gone mad; this is not aberration nor insanity;
this
is Europe.”

Iranian
leaders have repeatedly said they do not want war with the US
(
AP9/27/18),
but US corporate media, despite frequently characterizing Trump as a
“mad king” (
FAIR.org6/13/18),
continue to play an instrumental role in rationalizing a future war
with Iran. Should such an intentional catastrophe come to pass, we
can hardly say that this would be America gone mad; war is not
aberration, it is always presented as the next sane choice.
This
is America.

Zie o.a:

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor cartoons on nomination of kavanaugh

Forgiveness
Is Overrated

 by Caitlin
Johnstone

Over poppenkast gesproken………

Journalist
David Sirota has just
published
an excellent op-ed
 titled
“America’s new aristocracy lives in an accountability-free
zone”, which begins with the observation that “Enron
executives were among the last politically connected criminals to
face any serious consequences for institutionalized fraud.”
Sirota goes on to remind readers how there was never any attempt by
either mainstream political party to bring accountability to anyone
responsible for monstrous offenses ranging from the disastrous
invasion of Iraq to the ecocidal manipulations of fossil fuel
plutocrats to the Wall Street plundering which led to the 2008 global
financial crisis.

Sirota’s argument is
solid: there is an aristocratic class which has successfully neutered
all the institutional mechanisms which were meant to protect the
powerless from the powerful. The government is bought and owned by
the plutocrats and so is the media, as the continued forgiveness of
unforgivable transgressions which those institutions have been
bestowing upon the aristocracy clearly reflects. This means that the
only thing left protecting the populace from the powerful is the
populace itself.

America’s new aristocracy lives in an accountability-free zone | David Sirota

Accountability is for the little people, immunity is for the ruling class. If this ethos seems familiar, that is because it has preceded some of the darkest moments in human history

theguardian.com

A
couple of years back I read
a
Shaun King article
 titled
“Stop asking black victims of white violence if they forgive
their victimizers”, about a bizarre trend in which the black
survivors of police shootings and racially motivated terrorism were
consistently finding themselves barraged with questions about
forgiveness. King wrote about how “before her son, Philando, had
even been buried, his body riddled with bullets from a Minnesota
police officer, Valerie Castile was asked live on CNN if she forgave
the man who shot him,” which is a truly demented thing to ask
someone in such a situation. Why would a newscaster bring up
forgiveness when a horrific injustice has just been inflicted and no
measures of any kind have even been taken to rectify it?

In
response to the latest wave of sex scandals in the Roman Catholic
Church,
“masses
of forgiveness” were held
 in
August as a way to help the faithful in “healing” their
distrust of the institution which has upheld itself as the highest
moral authority in the world for two thousand years. “I beg
forgiveness for these sins and for the scandal and betrayal felt by
so many others in God’s family,”
said
Pope Francis
 at
a Marian shrine in Ireland in response to the degradation and abuse
inflicted upon the people of that nation by trusted Church officials.

The concept of
forgiveness is a recurring theme in any abusive relationship, and
necessarily so, because without extensive value being placed upon
that concept there wouldn’t be a relationship. You wouldn’t have a
battered wife, you’d have a story about how a woman’s boyfriend hit
her one time and she grabbed all her stuff and split. You wouldn’t
have a brainwashed and exploited cult member, you’d have a story
about how someone met a group of people and left when things got
weird. You wouldn’t have a major world religion consistently
embroiled in horrifying scandals, you’d have people dismissing that
religion and placing their energy and attention elsewhere. You
wouldn’t have a society that constantly allows itself to be
manipulated into consenting to abuse and exploitation by an
aristocratic class, you’d have a people’s uprising in which the
vastly outnumbered elites are shrugged off and replaced with a system
which benefits humanity.

Forgiveness is overrated.
There are only two types of people who consistently promulgate the
importance of forgiveness: abusers and their codependents. The abuse
can range from pedophilia and battery to war and ecocide, and the
codependency can range from a wife saying she fell down the stairs
again to a newscaster demanding to know when the mother of a son just
gunned down by police will forgive his murderer, but the formula
remains the same in each instance.

Anyone who goes around
around telling everyone else how important it is to forgive is either
an abuser or one of their brainwashed Stockholm syndrome victims.
Forgiveness is something you do for yourself, for your own benefit,
when you are ready and only for freeing yourself from energetic
entanglements. Those who have truly learned the value of authentic
forgiveness don’t run around telling other people to forgive those
who have wronged them, because they understand that you don’t need
anyone else’s help or permission to forgive somebody, and you don’t
even need anyone to change necessarily. If you really want to forgive
someone so that you can move on and stop thinking about it, you can
do so as long as they’re not doing the bad thing to you anymore. They
don’t have to repent or admit to their wrongdoing or whatever; you
can forgive them for being the thing they are just like you can
forgive a man-eating bear for being a man-eating bear. If it would
really benefit your inner peace and undo some mental chatter, you can
zoom out and see that a human being’s behavior is patterned like the
veins in a leaf, and that patterning rarely changes. You unknowingly
walked into that person’s path as innocently as if you’d accidentally
walked in front of a bus. Forgiving someone can just be letting go of
the idea that they will change, or that they would’ve done anything
different or would do anything different given the chance.

Once
you’ve seen that though, you don’t let them back in your life, and
you certainly don’t let them go on running the world. Man-eating bear
be man-eating bear, man. You don’t let a man-eating bear hang around
long enough to eat another one of your children, and you don’t let a
neocon hang around long enough to destroy another middle-eastern
country. You know what they do, you’ve seen what they are, and you
don’t let them do it anymore. Being lulled into a state of inertia
with hypnotic entreaties about forgiveness and how we’re all kinda
fucked up and we all make mistakes and we’re all the same is just
another psychologically abusive manipulation performed by the abusers
and their codependents. Some people in the highest echelons of
power
right
now
 have
facilitated the most extraordinary barbaric crimes on a scale that
even the worst serial killer in his most horrifying fantasies could
barely bring himself to imagine. Our greatest mistake as a species
right now is forgiving them.

Forgiveness
is a key foundational element in most abusive relationships. The
abusee is manipulated or bullied into forgiving the abuser again and
again, without ever holding a grudge. This is true of a battered
spouse, and it is true of an oppressed populace.

Forgiveness is a key foundational element in most abusive relationships. The abusee is manipulated or bullied into forgiving the abuser again and again, without ever holding a grudge. This is true of a battered spouse, and it is true of an oppressed populace.

One major way that
sociopaths differ from normal people is that they don’t think about
things in terms of feeling bad or feeling good about doing something,
they just think about the consequences. If you don’t feel guilt, you
don’t worry about feeling guilty. It literally doesn’t factor into
your decision-making process. “Oh, I won’t do that again because
I sure do feel bad about that million people I helped kill” is
not a thought that ever goes through their head. If the consequences
of Iraq were a buttload of profit and a regular spot on CNN with
absolutely no downside whatsoever, no uncomfortable trip to the
Hague, no endless prison sentence, no stripping of wealth, status and
power, then of course they want to do it again and again and again
and again and again. They will do it until they are stopped.

So America’s new
aristocracy must be stopped, and the only way they can be stopped is
to be held to account, right here, on earth, as soon as humanly
possible. Allowing them to go on for even one more day is
acknowledging that there are no consequences for evil, and when there
are no consequences for evil, evil will reign.

And that’s where we are
right now. Evil reigns, but it’s a simple matter of restoring justice
to the earth by the people taking their power back and standing in
judgement of these pricks and making sure they do not do this again.
Passing judgement on someone is an idea that makes good people feel
uneasy, and that’s deliberate. From the Pope down, we’ve been
anesthetized with this mind-virus that in order to be good people we
just put our head down, work hard, die poor, and let God do the
judging. How convenient for power is that story? A little too
convenient. Sold to us by the same people who rape children and sit
on a throne of stolen riches.

I don’t buy it anymore,
and neither should you.

rechtsstaat is………
opgelegd…..)…..

What
the Media Isn’t Telling You About Brett Kavanaugh

(ANTIMEDIA Op-ed) —
As expected, the corporate media’s coverage of Brett Kavanaugh’s
appointment process is disappointingly superficial. While there’s
no doubt sexual harassment is a pressing issue in modern-day America,
left-leaning establishment outlets and individuals alike are mired in
these accusations, as well as partisan political divides as they fail
to recognize Kavanaugh’s very troublesome record of court
rulings—rulings that show his verifiable proclivity toward using
the government to very literally harass the American people and the
rest of the world.

While
Congress and the people bicker over their disagreements with
Kavanaugh as he testifies, few are discussing what he has in common
with both factions of the American ruling class.

The
ACLU compiled a
report in
August detailing his many troublesome perspectives, highlighting his
past decisions on surveillance, free speech, presidential and
congressional war powers, and as a result, the overarching iron fist
of government power that few care to challenge, choosing instead to
fight for control of the institution at large.

As
the ACLU summarized in its “Report of the American Civil Liberties
Union on the Nomination of Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh To Be
Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court”:

[Kavanaugh’s]
record shows his extreme deference to presidential war power and
national security claims, an unwillingness to enforce international
law absent express incorporation by the political branches, and
a tendency to find obstacles to holding government
officials accountable for constitutional and human rights
abuses in national security cases
.”

One
of the greatest constitutional violations since 9/11 has been the
U.S. government’s denial of fair trials and redress over government
violations of rights within the justice system. Kavanaugh has
encouraged these encroachments. In the 2015 case Meshal v.
Higgenbotham
, Kavanaugh moved to deny “a remedy to an
American citizen detained and abused by FBI agents overseas
,”
siding with security over freedom, claiming that giving the American
citizen in question his constitutional rights might undermine efforts
to fight terrorism.

In
a 2009 case, Saleh v. Titan, he asserted military
contractors cannot be held liable to human rights abuses as long as
they are acting under the authority of the U.S. military.

There
is ample evidence of these abuses, but Kavanaugh does not believe in
holding government affiliates accountable. Similarly, in the same
ruling, he asserted that “government contractors [are] immune
from torture claims brought under the [Alien Tort Statute] when the
contractors operate under the control of the U.S. military
.”
The military’s violent authority trumps all.

In
2008, he sided with the executive branch on war powers. Kavanaugh
wrote in the ruling for Harbury v. Hayden that
courts cannot review allegations of executive branch wrongdoing
if the claims challenge national security or foreign affairs
decisions.

In
still another case, El-Shifa Pharmaceutical Industries Co. v.
United States
 (2010), he showed his “inclination
to dismiss cases alleging government misconduct where national
security or foreign affairs are at issue.

He
has also opined that the U.S. government’s war powers are free from
the constraints of international law and that international treaties
can be ignored if U.S. courts “construe statutes, at least when
related to war powers.” Further, he has asserted that while the
U.S. should technically respect international law, the courts have no
power to make the government comply with it. That decision should be
left to the president and Congress (most of us know how they’ve
handled their war powers).

Regarding
“continued detention” pursuant to the 2001 Authorization for Use
of Military Force, Kavanaugh went so far as to acknowledge in
2013’s Ali v. Obama that “this is a long war
with no end in sight
,” but still decided “it is not the
Judiciary’s proper role to devise a novel detention standard that
varies with the length of detention.

Kavanaugh’s
prompted another judge to claim the current Supreme Court nominee had
stretched the meaning of the AUMF so far that some habeas corpus
rulings were “functionally useless.” Similarly, as the ACLU
observed, Kavanaugh has “joined or written numerous D.C. Circuit
opinions that have turned judicial habeas review of Guantánamo
detention into a virtual rubber stamp
.”

His
record on free speech is less atrocious than his reverence for
authoritarian war powers, protecting government corruption and
violence, and denying justice to citizens and noncitizens alike.
Nonetheless, he has been known to side with suppressing speech on
some occasions. As the ACLU report explains:

His
jurisprudence suggests that, where the precedent is clear, he
faithfully applies the law. Where the case law offers ambiguity,
however, he has shown a willingness to restrict speech rights.

With
regard to government spying, in
Klayman
v. Obama
 in
2015, he disturbingly said the “
suspicionless
mass collection of Americans’ call records is ‘entirely
consistent with the Fourth Amendment
.’”
Further, he
said: “The
Government’s collection of telephony metadata from a third party
such as a telecommunications service provider is not considered a
search under the Fourth Amendment
”—and
that even if bulk collection
did constitute
a search, such searches are totally reasonable.

He
is also supportive of America’s growing police state. In the 2007
ruling
United
States v. Askew
,
he sided in favor of police stop-and-frisk tactics, another violation
of the 4th amendment. In another broad show of support of police
powers, he endorses qualified immunity, which is used to
exempt “
government
officials from liability for constitutional rights violations where
their actions are not clearly unconstitutional.”
 This
concept has been used by the Supreme Court to let a police officer
who shot a woman in her own yard off the hook,
setting further
precedents to prevent police accountability. Though he opposes
“absolute immunity,” his support for a concept that already
limits government responsibility is troublesome on its own – and is
consistent with rulings regarding the government’s war powers.

The
national conversation about Kavanaugh is obsessively focused on
sexual harassment allegations and his views on traditional partisan
divides like women’s rights and healthcare. While these are not
unimportant issues, it is painfully telling that few are concerned
about the exact same issues both the left and right agree upon that
amount to verifiable harassment — by the government against the
American people and victims of his war machine.

Will
Congress be questioning Kavanaugh on mass surveillance? Doubtful,
considering they continue to
pass legislation
to enable it. Will they question him about his endorsement of
unrestrained executive and legislative war powers? Again, doubtful
given their
unrelenting warmongering
and commitment to
spending taxpayer
dollars on their crumbling empire. As Congress continues to violate
the people’s rights while feigning concern for their well-being—and
as the media routinely
fails to
inform the public of these incremental erosions of their freedoms and
liberties, it’s no surprise the country at large remains
unconcerned about Kavanaugh’s authoritarian record on war powers
and surveillance or his dubious commitment to free speech and holding
domestic law enforcement accountable.

e.e.a. nonsens is.

In

Lees

ARTICLE, NEWSSEPTEMBER
12, 2018
AUTHOR:
CAITLIN JOHNSTONE

ThinkProgress
Censored By Facebook After Cheerleading Facebook Censorship

In an
article last month
 titled
“Facebook announces that fake accounts are now coming not just from
Russia”, fauxgressive establishment apologia
firm
ThinkProgress falsely
reported
 that
I have been writing for an outlet that is alleged to be part of an
Iranian propaganda campaign. I
repeatedly
brought
 this
false claim to the attention of Casey Michel, the article’s author,
telling him that ten seconds of research or any attempt to contact me
would have shown him that the articles published by the outlet in
question were just reblogs of earlier publications from my platform,
but Michel ignored the many notifications he received from myself and
my Twitter followers and went on merrily interacting with other
posters. As of this writing, the article remains uncorrected.

In
the article, Michel documented Facebook’s heroic efforts to shut
down alleged Iranian propaganda outlets, ominously warning his
readers that “Russia is by no means the only foreign adversary
exploiting social media’s inherent openness.” In other articles
for
ThinkProgress,
Michel is
repeatedlyseen wagging
his finger
 at
Facebook and Twitter for not doing more to censor “Russian
propaganda”, and in
a
July article
 titled
“Facebook says both sides share fake news, defends Infowars’
presence on its platform — Mark Zuckerberg has an interesting way
of prioritizing ‘high quality news’” another
ThinkProgress author
criticized Facebook for not censoring Alex Jones. Jones was
censored
by Facebook the following month
.

So
I think it’s understandable that those of us who have
been
warning of
the
dangers
of internet censorship
 find
it a bit funny to see
ThinkProgress now
complaining
 that
it has been censored by Facebook.

Glenn Greenwald

@ggreenwald

Congratulations to everyone who 1) held up Bill Kristol and the Weekly Standard as a responsible, serious, admirable voice; and 2) urged Facebook to become the arbiters of who could & couldn’t be heard on the internet. This is just the start of your work: https://thinkprogress.org/facebook-weekly-standard-fact-check-thinkprogress-6176df1d5749/

Facebook’s idea of ‘fact-checking’: Censoring ThinkProgress because conservative site told them to

A perfect example of how Facebook is catering to conservatives.

thinkprogress.org

ThinkProgress reports that
its traffic from Facebook has been slashed by eighty percent due to a
“fact check” by the
Weekly
Standard
 which,
through a series of moronic mental contortions,
found
ThinkProgress guilty
of reporting fake news about Brett Kavanaugh of all things. In a
twist of irony which would be delicious if it weren’t so
disgusting, the
Weekly
Standard
 is
one of Facebook’s authorized “fact checkers”, and happens to be
the brainchild of none other than bloodthirsty psychopath and
rehabilitated #Resistance hero Bill Kristol.

ThinkProgress is
part of a very large and diverse branch of progressive punditry whose
ultimate job is to help centrist empire loyalists feel like leftist
revolutionaries, and since 2016 one of the many appalling
consequences of this bizarre environment has been the embracing of
Iraq-raping neoconservatives like Kristol and Max Boot by Democratic
Party loyalists. In a bid to stay relevant despite having been
consistently wrong about literally everything in foreign policy for
the last two decades, these murderous ghouls have
repackaged
themselves
 as
a woke, cuddly alternative to the Trumpian faction of the Republican
Party, and have been rewarded for their efforts with regular
platforms on MSNBC and the
Washington
Post (WaPo)
.

So
with
ThinkProgress getting
censored by Facebook, you really couldn’t ask for a more clear-cut
case of reaping what you sow. Nevertheless, it is wrong for anyone to
be deprived of political speech, even if much of their political
speech consists of attempts to silence the political speech of
others. And if there is anything more gross than political speech
being regulated by Silicon Valley plutocrats and
a
NATO psyop factory
,
it’s political speech being regulated by Silicon Valley
plutocrats, a NATO psyop factory, and Bill
Kristol.
ThinkProgress should
not have its audience restricted.

https://twitter.com/BenjaminPDixon/status/1039606355747856386

All
the “let me help you cheer for the establishment while pretending
to oppose it” pundits who celebrated Alex Jones’ coordinated
de-platforming last month are falling all over themselves to spin
this new development in a way that allows them to feel as though they
aren’t being proven wrong day after day after day, but of course
they are. Facilitating the censorship of anyone’s speech is
facilitating the censorship of your own speech in the long run, and
we’re not even having to wait long to see it this time around. In a
corporatist system of government, corporate censorship is state
censorship; the massive new media corporations being implored to
regulate which political speech gets an audience and which doesn’t
have
extensive
ties to secretive government agencies
 and
a vested interest in maintaining the status quo.

I
do not expect
ThinkProgress to
remain on Facebook’s restricted list for long; the real targets of
internet censorship are not partisan outlets which prop up
establishment politics and help legitimize America’s two-headed one
party system. But that isn’t the point. The point is that Silicon
Valley plutocrats, the NATO propaganda firm Atlantic Council, and
the
Weekly
Standard
 should
not be determining who gets an audience in the new media environment
and who doesn’t. Nothing that has anything to do with Bill Kristol
should ever have any power over anyone. If our choices are between
letting people think for themselves and letting the guy who’s
always wrong about everything determine what shows up in people’s
news feed, the choice is obviously the one which doesn’t involve
placing faith in the man who helped deceive America into butchering a
million Iraqis***.
