Penguin Swims 5,000 Miles Each Year to Visit the Man Who Rescued Him

Talk
about gratitude.

How
far would you swim to reunite with the person who saved your life?
For one penguin who found himself in a sticky situation (literally),
the answer is approximately 5,000 miles.

Have
you heard about the Magellanic
Penguin and retired bricklayer in
Brazil who have struck up a unique friendship?

Joao
Pereira de Souza lives in a fishing village just outside Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil. In 2011 he found a tiny penguin lying on some rocks
at his local beach. The creature was covered in oil and close
to death.

Joao
cleaned the penguin, nursed him back to health, and named
him Dindim. Joao tried releasing the penguin, presumably
never to meet again, but Dindim wasn’t ready to leave just
yet. Joao
recalls,
“He stayed with me for 11 months and then, just after he changed
his coat with new feathers, he disappeared.”

But
that was not the last time the two would meet. So
the story goes,
over the past five years, Dindim has spent many months of the year
with Joao and some believe he spends the rest of the time
breeding off the coast of Argentina and Chile.

Joao
told Globo TV,
“I love the penguin like it’s my own child and I believe the
penguin loves me.” Apparently, no one else is permitted to touch
Dindim, besides Joao, of course. Dindim lets Joao give him showers,
feed and pick him up.

That’s
quite a heartwarming story, eh?

According
to Penguin World,
the Magellanic Penguin is the only migratory, offshore-foraging
species in its genus. Some move as far north as Peru and Brazil
in winter. So a penguin hanging out at a Brazilian fishing village is
not necessarily as wild and crazy as it may sound.

I
wonder though; is having a human ‘bff’ in any way a detriment to
this wild penguin’s welfare?

We
know that there are health
and emotional benefits of human-animal interactions.
But we also know that wild animals belong in the wild and when
humans try to change that, tragedy happens.

Still,
a recent
study found that
ecotourism — which some
claim can be dangerous to animal species in general —“might
be less harmful to larger birds than previously thought because
larger animals are more likely to be able to tolerate human
disturbance.” A key finding from the
study:
“Larger birds are more tolerant of humans than smaller birds.”

Daniel
Blumstein, the study’s senior author and a member of the Institute
of the Environment and Sustainability, explained,
“This new finding flips previous recommendations about large-bodied
species being more vulnerable to the presence of humans, and shows
that large-bodied species are more tolerant.” He added, “It is
likely costly for animals to respond fearfully to people that are not
harming them.”

Interesting
indeed, but to get the full picture, you should read the
complete study.

As
for the heartwarming bond between Joao and Dindim, to further
explore whether this relationship is in any way harmful to
the penguin, I turned to International
Bird Rescue,
an organization that has pioneered oiled aquatic bird care.

There
I connected with Barbara Callahan, International Bird Rescue’s
Response Services Director, who had just left Brazil where she was
working with their partner organization, Aiuká
Consultoria em Soluções Ambientais.
Callahan suggested I connect with the Projects Director of Aiuká,
Valeria Ruoppolo, who has been following this case.

About
the unusual human-penguin friendship, Ruoppolo told me, “There is
no harm really, but that is excluding the fact that the animal is
being fed while on shore and that is why it does not go away.”

Takes
a bit of wind out of the friendship sail, but what do you expect?
It’s hard for anyone to turn down free lunch.

In
terms of where exactly the penguin goes when not with Mr. Joao,
Ruoppolo believes the media thus far has gotten it wrong. “Once it
decides to go, the animal clearly knows where it is going back to,
but in my opinion it does not go back south to Argentina as I have
seen all over the media.”

Her
theory? “The penguin is generally away for 4 months and it probably
feeds and swims around south and southeastern Brazil when it decides
to go back to Mr. Joao.”

Well,

Albatros Wisdom (± 65!) brengt alweer een kuiken groot!!

Mensen gelukkig is er nog steeds genoeg moois te vinden op ons aller kleine planeet (de planeet van alle wereldbewoners, dus ook van de vluchtelingen). Het volgende bericht komt van Care2 en vertelt over een 65 jarige albatros genaamd ‘Wisdom’, de oudst bekende vogel, die weer een kuiken groot brengt. Wisdom moet in haar leven zo’n 9,6 miljoen kilometer hebben afgelegd!!

Oldest Known Wild Bird, is a Mother Again!

Wisdom,
a Laysan albatross who is now the oldest known banded bird in the
world, has continued to surprise wildlife officials and her fans
by reappearing every
year at the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge in the Pacific,
and this year was no exception.

Now
believed to be at least 65 years old, Wisdom returned again earlier
this year with her mate who has been dubbed Goo or Mr. Goo by refuge
staff because of the number on his leg band. Wisdom was spotted
earlier this winter incubating  yet another egg.

Earlier
this month, to the delight of her fans, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service announced that
her newest chick was spotted and was named Kūkini, which is Hawaiian
for messenger.

Wisdom
was first banded back in 1956 when she was believed to be just
5-years-old and has managed to survive decades, outliving many of her
relatives whose lifespans are estimated to be between 12 and 40 years
in the wild. She’s also believed to have flown an incredible six
million ocean miles since she was first tagged.

Laysan
albatrosses mate for life , after engaging in an elaborate courtship
ritual, and lay only one egg every year, making each one precious to
expecting parents. According to the FWS, Wisdom has raised at least
eight chicks since 2006, and as many as 40 throughout her life.

“Wisdom
is an iconic symbol of inspiration and hope,” said Robert
Peyton, Refuge Manager. “From a scientific perspective, albatrosses
are a critical indicator species for the world’s oceans that
sustain millions of human beings as well. In the case of Wisdom, she
is breaking logevity records of previously banded birds by at least a
decade. With over a million albatross on Midway Atoll alone, this
shows just how much is left to learn about the natural world around
us.”

While
Wisdom’s new chick is being celebrated, the FWS notes that
thousands of others are also welcoming the next generation at Midway.
In December, the agency counted 470,000 active nests across the
entire atoll, which is now the largest albatross nesting colony in
the world.

The number of potential new chicks
hatching this year may seem high, but each one is vital to the
survival of this species. According to
the National Audubon Society, of the 22 species of albatross
recognized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature
(IUCN), 15 are threatened with extinction, and eight species are
either endangered or critically endangered.

Unfortunately,
they continue to face a major threat from being caught in fishing
gear and drowning, which is killing an estimated 100,000 albatross
every year, while they also face the growing problem of plastic in
our oceans.

The
Audubon Society is pushing
for legislation in
the form of the Albatross and Petrel Conservation Act of 2016 (HR
4480), which will bring the U.S. in line with other countries that
are working to protect these seabirds under the Agreement on the
Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP).

Monica Loera 43, vermoord, de eerste transgender dit jaar……..

In ‘het land van hoop en glorie’, de VS, werd op 22 januari de eerste transgender van dit jaar vermoord…….. Op die dag werd Monica Loera voor haar deur in Austin, Texas doodgeschoten….. Dat ‘eerste’ is trouwens niet zeker, daar het nogal eens voorkomt, dat de politie in de VS niet meldt dat een slachtoffer werd vermoord n.a.v. diens transgender zijn…… Ook de belangstelling voor dit soort zaken bij de pers (in de VS*) is bijzonder matig…… Sterker nog: vaak komt men in de media met beschuldigingen aan het adres van het slachtoffer………….

Zo ook in het geval van Monica, zo werd haar verweten, dat haar ‘transgender papieren’ niet op orde waren….. Dat het een uitzonderlijk en moeilijk proces is, om in de VS en al helemaal in staten als Texas, om als transgender erkent te worden (dat is een proces van vele jaren), interesseert diezelfde pers niet…..

‘Carnisme’, of waarom we vlees eten

Ask
any meat eater why
people eat meat and
they’ll tell you it’s delicious, that eating meat is not only
natural but also normal and necessary. Ask Dr.
Melanie Joy the
same question and you’ll get a much darker—and
interesting—answer: a violent ideology has convinced them they must
do it.

That
ideology is carnism, the opposite of veganism. Never heard of it?
That’s exactly her point.

“Carnism
is a dominant ideology, which means it’s embedded deeply in society
to the point that it’s considered ‘just the way things are,’”
Joy explains. “But just because something isn’t recognized or is
viewed as ‘how things are’ doesn’t mean they don’t exist.
Racism wasn’t recognized as a problem or ideology at a point in
history but that doesn’t mean it didn’t exist. It’s just been
around for so long that it’s taken for granted.”

Joy,
a Harvard-educated psychologist, first explained her theory in a
TEDX talk in early 2015.
A former “meat lovers pizza girl” who would make sure her pizza
had all types of meat in it, she turned vegan after being
hospitalized for eating bacteria infested meat. The reason behind her
deciding to ditch animal products wasn’t initially the animals
themselves, but soon after, she began seeing them as sentient beings,
not products. That’s when she began her research on what drove
people like her former self to eat them.

“When
we’re born into a world with a dominant ideology, we can’t help
but see the world through that lens,” she says of how kids whose
parents eat chicken wings, for example, will start seeing chicken as
a natural food option. “There are people in this world who
absolutely need to eat meat because geographically or socially,
that’s where they are. Most people, though, have a choice when it
comes to eating animals, they’re just not aware if it because
they’re blinded by the ideology.”

Those
blinders come from both inside and outside ourselves, she says. From
the outside we have agro-businesses taking
strong measures to
make sure people don’t know how
violent and cruel the process of making meat actually is,
calling a cow a hamburger, a hen chicken wings and a pig hot dogs.
From the inside, we convince ourselves eating meat is normal,
necessary and natural by reminding ourselves people have done it for
years.

The
only way to break the cycle is then to make the ideology visible, she
argues. Look at undercover footage of factory farming, see how those
animals are treated, learn about how an animal becomes a hamburger, a
chicken wing or a hot dog.

The
first step in that chain of events is for people to first acknowledge
that there is an ideology, however. That was her goal with the TEDX
Talk and now an
animated video she recently released —
and it’s working.

Her
presentation, ‘Beyond Carnism and Toward Rational, Authentic Food
Choices,’ has become one
of the top one percent most viewed TEDX
talks of all time and she has presented it in five different
continents.

“It’s
really exciting the shift of consciousness that’s happening around
the world,” she says. “A lot of people are asking how they can
make more ethical choices.”

But
is it enough to trump an
industry that kills 77 billion animals for
flesh and body parts to be sold for food? Joy thinks so.

“I
have no doubt veganism will replace carnism one day,” she
proclaims. “Look at the other -isms who have fallen before like
sexism and racism. Carnism is so contrary to humans and their values.
Most people genuinely believe in values like compassion and not
causing harm unnecessarily. Carnism goes directly against all of
those values. When people become aware and freely choose how they
participate in these systems, they start saying ‘no.’”

Stierenvechten in de ban, Villafrance de los Caballeros geeft het geld liever uit aan schoolspullen!!!

Las gisteren bij Care2, dat de Spaanse stad Villafrance de los Caballeros (70 km. ten zuiden van Madrid) het stierenvechten voorgoed in de ban heeft gedaan!! De gemeenteraad steekt de naar schatting € 18.000,– die het bespaart, in boeken en andere schoolspullen voor de lokale jeugd!!

Gelukkig zijn er regelmatig van dit soort berichten mensen, het teken dat er ook bestuurders zijn, die wel hun gezond verstand kunnen gebruiken!!

Care2 nieuws van afgelopen zaterdag: één van de vijf laatste wiitte neushoorns is overleden…….. Dat hebben we als mensheid weer ‘mooi’ voor elkaar gekregen, nu de rest van de neushoorns nog kapot schieten!!!

Orka’s ‘van’ Sea World, hebben een fenomenale kwaliteit van leven……… ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha!

Sea World wilde voor eens en altijd een eind maken, aan alle kritiek die men heeft op het houden van orka’s, door dit schoftentuig.

Men heeft daarom 6 stellingen gegeven, die het bewijs zouden zijn, dat ze gelijk hebben met hun bewering, dat orka’s in gevangenschap net zoveel kwaliteit van leven hebben, dan hun wilde soortgenoten…….

Hier de opsomming, mensen gordels vast, daar gaat ‘ie:

  • Sea World beweert dat wetenschappelijk is bewezen, dat orka’s in gevangenschap even oud worden, als hun wilde soortgenoten……. Echter, volgens Marine Mammal Science en een voormalig orka trainer van Sea World, dr. Jeffrey Ventre, is dit niet zo en bewijzen de feiten het tegendeel……..
  • Sea World stelt dat vrouwelijke orka’s 46 – 50 jaar oud en huin mannelijke soortgenoten 30 – 38 jaar oud worden. Maar volgens het VS overheidsinstituut National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, stelt dat orka’s 100 jaar oud worden. Dit instituut geeft vrouwelijke orka’s een leeftijd van 50 – 100 jaar oud. Manlijke orka’s worden gemiddeld 30 jaar, maar leeftijden van 50 – 60 jaar zijn geen uitzondering….
  • Niemand weet zeker hoe lang orka’s leven, zo stelt Sea World als 3de punt. Daar zeggen wetenschappers en andere specialisten over, dat men ook niet zou weten hoe oud mensen worden, als we dit niet wetenschappelijk zouden onderzoeken. ‘Zouden’, want er zijn wel degelijk veel gegevens over wilde orka’s. Zo is bekend, dat een overgrootmoeder orka intussen al 103 jaar oud is!!! En nogmaals uit onderzoek blijkt, dat gevangen orka’s aanmerkelijk korter leven…….. 
  • Sea World is trots op haar nieuwe bassins voor orka’s, die zouden de natuur evenaren, wat betreft ruimte….. (ha! ha!) Deze evenaring: een bassin van 15 meter diep en 105 meter lang. Jammer genoeg stond de breedte niet vermeld, maar al zou die de 100 meter benaderen, zal ik dat even vergelijken met een paar cijfers: wilde orka’s kunnen minstens tot 350 meter diep duiken en ze kunnen oceanen overzwemmen…… Dat is toch echt iets anders dan een bassin van 100 bij 105 meter, met een diepte van 15 meter!!
  • Sea World wijst een advies van een aantal critici af, die stellen dat S.W. stukken zee zou moeten afzetten, zodat deze dieren echt de ruimte hebben. Daarvan zegt Sea World, dat stukken zee afbakenen voor orka’s, misschien goed is, om gewonde dieren te verzorgen, om ze later weer los te laren, maar niet voor ‘haar’ orka’s……. ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! Die zijn echt gek!! Alsof het dan beter is, om deze dieren in bassins te houden, jezus christus!!!
  • Sea World’s meest belachelijke uitspraak is wel de stelling, dat ‘haar’ orka’s een fenomenale kwaliteit van leven hebben……. ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! Ja, je moet weel lef hebben, om dit te durven zeggen, godverdomme!! Dus het gevangen houden van dieren, die hun natuurlijke manier van leven volledig kwijt zijn, geeft een ‘fenomenale kwaliteit van leven…..’ Orka’s leven in groepen, die wel uit 100 individuen kunnen bestaan en waarmee ze duizenden zeemijlen kunnen afleggen, ‘

In 1965 was de eerste orka show van Sea World in San Diego. De eerste orka die hier moest ‘optreden’ was Shamu, zij was er getuige van hoe haar moeder middels een harpoen werd vermoord…….. Volgens onderzoekers zijn er intussen meer dan 44 orka’s ‘van’ Sea World gestorven in gevangenschap en momenteel ‘heeft’ Sea World 5 orka’s die het heeft ontvoerd uit de oceaan………..

Excuseer mensen: GODGLOEIENDEGODVERDOMME!!!

Dit bericht behandelt het lot van orka’s, maar u snapt natuurlijk wel, dat dit bericht van toepassing is op alle walvisachtigen, die voor menselijk ‘plezier’ in bassins worden gehouden, dus ook voor de dolfijnen in het Dolfinarium van Harderwijk……. Nooit weer bezoeken mensen, dat is de beste manier om een eind te maken aan deze geestelijke en lichamelijke marteling van deze wonderlijk mooie en intelligente dieren!! Zegt het voort, a.u.b.!

Qatar weigert overgrote deel van Nepalese slaven, terug te gaan om te rouwen en familie bij te staan……. FIFA uh viva voetbal!!!

Ongelofelijk, las vanmorgen op de site van Care2, dat er van de 1,5 miljoen slaven uit Zuidoost-Azië, die aan de voetbalstadions in Qatar werken, er 40.000 uit Nepal komen. Qatar weigert het merendeel van deze Nepalezen naar huis te gaan, om te rouwen en familie bij te staan, na de aardbevingen in dat land, een handjevol kreeg toestemming te vertrekken……

Naast dat deze slaven zwaar uitgebuit worden, veel te lange dagen maken, veelal te zwaar werk moeten doen en erbarmelijk zijn gehuisvest, wordt hen keer op keer salaris ontzegt. De temperaturen in Qatar zijn al langere tijd boven de 47 graden Celsius en er schijnt al een fiks aantal (bouwvak-) slaven te zijn overleden, ten gevolge van die hoge temperatuur (volgens de BBC). 

Er zouden ook leden van de Nederlandse bouwmaffia werken aan de stadions in Qatar, dezen maken dus ook gebruik van slavenarbeid……

Tijd voor een dikke handelsdelegatie naar Qatar, uiteraard met het koningshuis……..

VS zakt weg in barbarij…….

Naast het feit, dat de VS meer en meer trekken van een (autoritaire) politiestaat vertoont, zakt het ‘land’ ook nog eens weg in absolute barbarij, als het om de natuurbescherming, of zelfs de bescherming van bepaalde roofdieren betreft….. Zo wordt er al weer een paar jaar, na een  langdurig jachtverbod op wolven, weer volop gejaagd op deze wonderlijk mooie dieren. Florida doet dit jaar ook een flinke duit in het zakje: vanaf augustus, mag er na een verbod van 20 jaar, vanaf augustus weer volop gejaagd worden op de zwarte beer………….

En de slang Obama maar overal net doen, alsof hij en ‘zijn VS’ zo voor de bescherming van de natuur en het klimaat zijn……… Precies als zijn ‘nobelprijs voor de vrede’: een gotspe!!!

First Black Bear Hunting Season in 20 Years Planned in Florida

Plastic in de oceanen kost naar schatting meer dan 1 miljoen dieren jaarlijks het leven

Op de Care2 website gisteren het bericht, dat jaarlijks 100.000 dieren verdrinken door het plastic in de oceanen. Per vierkante kilometer zitten er meer dan 43.300 delen en deeltjes plastic in het water. Dieren overlijden bovendien aan de gevolgen van verstoppingen door plastic, of de hoeveelheid gif die vrijkomt bij het verteringsproces van die rotzooi. Bij een aangespoelde potvis in Spanje vond men 100 plasticzakken in de maag, dat was dan ook de doodsoorzaak…..

Buiten dat komen er 1 miljoen zeevogels om, doordat ze in plastic verstrikt raken (verdrinking), of door het eten van plastic.
