Syria
– U.S. CentCom Declares War On Russia

By
Moon Of Alabama

September
25, 2017 “Information
Clearing House
” –  Yesterday three high ranking Russian
officers were killed in an “ISIS attack” in eastern-Syrian.
It is likely that they were killed by U.S. special forces or
insurgents under U.S. special forces control. The incident will be
understood as a declaration of war.

The
U.S. Central Command in the Middle East wants the oil fields in
east-Syria under control of its proxy forces to set up and control a
U.S. aligned Kurdish mini-state in the area. The Syrian government,
allied with Russia, needs the revenues of the oil fields to rebuild
the country.

bigger

Last
week the Russians issued
sharply
worded statements
 against
U.S. coordination with al-Qaeda terrorists in Idleb province and
warned of further escalation.

Yesterday
the Russian Ministry of Defense
accused the
U.S. military in east-Syria of direct collaboration with the Islamic
State:

US
Army special units provide free passage for the Syrian Democratic
Forces (SDF) through the battle formations of Islamic State (IS,
formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorists, the ministry said in a statement.

Facing
no resistance of the ISIS militants, the SDF units are advancing
along the left shore of the Euphrates towards Deir ez-Zor,” the
statement reads.

The
newly released images “clearly show that US special ops are
stationed at the outposts previously set up by ISIS militants.”

Despite
that the US strongholds being located in the ISIS areas, no screening
patrol has been organized at them,” the Russian Ministry of Defense
said.

This
map marks the currently relevant conflict area – (U.S. proxies –
yellow, SAA – red, ISIS – black):

The
accusations are plausible. Large parts of ISIS in Deir Ezzor consist
of local tribal forces from eastern-Syria. U.S. special envoy Brett
McGurk recently met tribal leaders who had earlier pledged allegiance
to ISIS. Deals were made. As we
wrote:

The
U.S. diplomat tasked with the job, Brett McGurk**
recently
met
 with
local tribal dignitaries of the area. Pictures of the meeting were
published. Several people
pointed
out
 that
the very same dignitaries were earlier pictured swearing allegiance
to the Islamic State.

bigger

Just
like during the “Anbar Awaking” in its war on Iraq the U.S.
is bribing the local radicals to temporarily change over to its side.
This will help the U.S. to claim that it defeated ISIS. But as soon
as the payments stop the very same forces will revert back to their
old game.

The
local criminal
Ahmad
Abu Khawla
,
who had earlier fought for ISIS, was suddenly installed
as
commander of
a newly invented “Deir Ezzor Military Council”, set up
under U.S. special force control.

Last
night a Russian three-star general and two colonels were
killed in
a mortar attack while they visited a Syrian army headquarter in Deir
Ezzor:

Lieutenant-General
Valery Asapov, of the Russian armed forces, has been killed after
coming under shelling from Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL)
militants near Deir ez-Zor, the Russian Defense Ministry has
announced.

In
its statement, the ministry said that Asapov was at a command outpost
manned by Syrian troops, assisting commanders in the liberation of
the city of Deir ez-Zor.

Lieutenant-General Valery
Asapov is the highest-ranking Russian officer to be killed in the
Syrian campaign. He was a commander of the 5th Army in Russia’s
Eastern Military District, one of the four strategic commands in the
Russian Armed Forces. The army is based in Russia’s Far East, in
the city of Ussuriysk, some 98 km (61 miles) from Vladivostok.

For
three years ISIS had besieged Syrian troops in Deir Ezzor city and
its airport. It had not once managed to successfully attack the
Syrian headquarter or to kill high ranking officers. Now, as U.S.
proxy forces “advised” by U.S. special forces, have taken
position north of Deir Ezzor, “ISIS” suddenly has the
intelligence data and precision mortar capabilities to kill a bunch
of visiting Russian officers?

That
is not plausible. No one in Damascus, Baghdad, Tehran or Moscow will
believe that.

The
Russian military, as usual, reacts calmly and officially attributes
the attack to ISIS. Doing so avoids pressure to immediately react to
the attack. (The U.S. will falsely interpret this as a face-saving
Russian retreat.)

But
no one in Moscow will believe that the incident is independent of
other recent maneuvers by the U.S. forces and independent of the
earlier accusations the Russian military made against the U.S.
forces.

Nominally
the U.S. and Russia are both in Syria to fight the Islamic State. The
Russian troops are legitimately there, having been invited by the
Syrian government. The U.S. forces have no legal justification for
their presence. So far open hostilities between the two sides had
been avoided. But as the U.S. now obviously sets out to split Syria
apart, openly cooperates with terrorists and does not even refrain
from killing Russian officers, the gloves will have to come off.

U.S.
Central Command has declared war on the Russian contingent in Syria.
A high ranking Russian general was killed. This inevitably requires a
reaction. The response does not necessarily have to come from Russian
forces.  Moscow has many capable allies in the area. The
response does not necessarily have to come in Syria.

“Accidents”
and “incidents”, like an “ISIS mortar attacks”,
or unintentional bombing of troop concentration of the other side,
can happen on both sides of the front. Cars can blow up, bridges can
collapse. Any U.S. officer or civilian official in the larger Middle
East should be aware that they too are now targets.

Politie VS verwijderde naarstig bericht over ‘grote drugsvangst……’

(ANTIMEDIA) —
Last
week, officers from Missouri’s Jasper Police Department celebrated
a marijuana bust they deemed worth roughly $100,000. In a now-deleted
Facebook post, they disclosed their satisfaction with their
operation, which took ten cops and sheriff’s deputies and a
National Guard helicopter to conduct.

As
the
Riverfront
Times
 noted (grabbing
screenshots before the post was taken down):

“’What
a great team effort today,’ the Jasper department’s now-deleted
post read. ‘It was hot and humid and not easy getting these plants.
We ALL got in the thick of things and got it done.’

The Times summarized
the post’s sentiment:

In
a curious bit of show-your-work math, the department calculated the
nearly 290 plants seized would have produced — “on the low side”
— 63 pounds of marijuana with a “street value” of roughly
$100,000
.”

But
commenters were quick to point out an apparent flaw in the officers’
bust: it wasn’t cannabis they had seized, but hemp, they said. You
can’t get high from smoking hemp, and the material can be used
to
create anything
from clothing, soap, paper to sails, rope,
fuel,
and
concrete,
called “hempcrete.” It is
both durable
and sustainable.

That’s
hemp
,”
one comment bluntly said, according to the Times,
though the rest of the comments are not available to view because the
original post has been removed. One of Missouri’s two entities
allowed to grow hemp for certain medicinal purposes, Mitch Meyers of
BeLeaf, said, “Sure
looks like hemp to me
.”

These
look to me like wild hemp plants, because they are tall and without
buds
,”
Show-Me Cannabis

Executive
Director John Payne told the Times,
which sent images of the confiscated plants to several experts. “That
probably means that no one was actively cultivating them. If that’s
the case, the street value of those plants is next to nothing
.”

Many
comments echoed similar sentiments, “as the post racked up
hundreds of comments, among them mocking congratulations to cops for
confiscating the raw material of natural fiber rope,

the Times reported.“Jasper Police, who cover an
area about twenty miles northeast of Joplin, pulled the post on
Wednesday morning
.”

However,
there is still some doubt as to whether the plants were hemp or
cannabis. Dr. Jason Strotheide, founder of licensed hemp grower
Noah’s Arc Foundation, said it is “nearly impossible to tell
the difference between hemp and marijuana until late in flower.

Rusty
Rives, police chief of the Lamar Police Department, which
participated in raid stuck by the claim that it was weed. “I’m
just looking at the picture,” he said. “but they look like
marijuana plants to me.”

It
doesn’t matter either way. Both are illegal in the state of
Missouri despite nationwide efforts to legalize both marijuana and
the hemp plant.

The Times had
difficulty obtaining comment other officials involved, but by last
Thursday, Jasper police chief Chad Karr responded, defending the
Facebook post.

The
goal, Karr says, was never to brag about a bunch of pot plants, but
rather to serve notice to a suspected meth dealer operating in the
area.

But the post reached many more people, accruing over 1,000 comments,
Karr said, some of which were “abusive.”

As
far as the “$100,000” estimation, “Karr says he tried to
estimate conservatively. He admits he’s no expert when it comes to
marijuana and doesn’t care to be.”
However, he suggested
the plants were not growing on their own, without human cultivation,
because there were trails leading out to the field where they were
confiscated.

Nevertheless,
he claims cannabis is not an issue for him.

I
think the misconception is we go to work to bust pot heads,”
he
said. “I
personally do not. I know what the problem is — it’s opiates and
methamphetamine.”

Hopefully,
his sentiment will continue to grow among law enforcement, who are
increasingly
trolledwhen
they
boast of
cannabis busts on social media. The
Times reports
that for now, it doesn’t appear any charges have been filed over
the plants.

3
Times Cops Posted About Weed Busts on FB This Week and Instantly
Regretted It

September

(ANTIMEDIA) — Drug
warrior cops are having a rough week on social media. Police
departments have taken to Facebook and other platforms to boast about
drug busts, and in turn, they’re receiving strong pushback from
internet users, particularly when cannabis is concerned.

From
North Carolina and Ohio to Indiana, Missouri, and Texas, cops have
been taking a beating.

On
September 7, Lincolnton, North Carolina police
posted a
mugshot of a young man charged with PWISD (possession of a
controlled substance with the intent to manufacture, sell or deliver)
of marijuana, as well as “
Possession
of Marijuana Paraphernalia”
and “Possession
of Drug Paraphernalia
.”
They estimated the street value of the confiscated drugs to be a
whopping $200.

Though
the post went relatively unnoticed for over a week, by Wednesday,
both trolls and serious commenters had descended upon it.
“’Don’t
do drugs, it’ll ruin your life.’ That’s true, in most cases
it’s the government that ruins that person’s life
,”
one Facebook user wrote in a comment that received over 1,000 likes.

The
comments ranged from sarcastic to serious:

Facebook
users also bombarded their ratings section, where users can review
pages.
Fox
46 Charlotte
reported that
The
Lincolnton Police Department went from a five-star rated department
to a 2.1 rated star department over the course of a few days
.”  In
post,
the police boasted about the backlash:

If
you read the one star reviews you will notice we are being attacked
because we enforce the drug laws of North Carolina. So basically the
pro-drug crowd is rating us one star for doing our jobs. We see this
as a good thing.

Nevertheless,
they ultimately removed their ratings system altogether.

Meanwhile,
in Ohio, the state’s highway patrol posted on Facebook about a
cannabis bust that yielded $3,000 and
felony
charges
 against
two men. They
wrote:

2009
Cadillac with Ohio registration was stopped for failure to display a
front license plate. Criminal indicators were observed and a Patrol
drug-sniffing canine alerted to the vehicle. A probable cause search
revealed 600 grams of marijuana
.

Once
again, trolls and concerned citizens flooded the page, leaving over
1,600 comments and calling the cops out for everything from stealing
property to violating freedom and wasting resources chasing a plant
(their page rating has dropped well below a 3.0). Still others called
out the hypocrisy of the drug war and the dangers of legal drugs Some
even questioned the philosophical and moral legitimacy of policing
institutions all together:

Some
mocked the cops:

Others
were straightforward and blunt (no pun intended):

Some
commenters defended the cops, claiming the fact that cannabis is
illegal justified the bust or that the cops were just doing their
job. Other commenters made sure to respond:

The
same thing happened on a post from cops in Mt. Vernon, Indiana, where
Posey County police
seized “Over
50 pounds of marijuana

and,
in turn, received an internet lashing:

One
commenter claimed marijuana was killing her friend’s son, only to
be shut down by a slew of pro-cannabis commenters:

In
yet
another post,
on Friday, the Wharton County Sheriff’s Office in Texas claimed to
have seized $25,000 worth of “alleged” drug money. After
dissenters streamed onto their post, complaining that they stole a
private citizen’s cash without even finding drugs, they evidently
modified their post (see screenshots below), removing “alleged”
and adding that the suspect had been arrested for money laundering.

Original
post:

Edited post:

Still,
no evidence was presented, and in seven hours over 900 commenters had
bombarded the post (some of the comments reflect the original post’s
use of the term “alleged”:

When Anti-Media attempted
to message the page for comment on what evidence they might have to
warrant their actions, we received an “Action Blocked”
notification (indicating they likely shut off private messages due to
the spike in activity). Like Lincolnton police, they also appear to
have removed their rating system (note the time in the upper right
corner of each image):

These
are just a few of the instances in which cops have received powerful
pushback for bragging about enforcing a drug war much of the nation
now
believes is
unwinnable. The increase in resistance has been largely assisted by
at least one Facebook page:
Liberty
Memes
.
The libertarian page often posts about police brutality and
misconduct, and last year made
headlines when
Facebook banned them over their anti-Hillary Clinton memes. According
to their
mission
statement
,
Liberty Memes “
uses
memes to defend the libertarian principles of the rights to life,
liberty, and property
.”

The
page has made a
habit of sharing cops’
posts about drug busts and other controversial actions with their
nearly 400,000 followers, providing a veritable alert system for
those who want to express their opinions directly to the enforcement
class.

As
the page’s “Admin 2” told Anti-Media,”the intention is to
very specifically get them to think twice about committing these
actions, as they are in violation of their oaths and run contrary to
a vast portion of public opinions.”

As
the trend of trolling and confronting cops online grows, some
departments have
deleted comments,
which experts say is
unconstitutional.
Several departments have been
sued for doing so.
Still, in many cases, the comments are left intact. This aligns
with
guidance from PoliceOne,
a website for law enforcement that advises officers to leave comments
on their pages unless they contain profanity or other potentially
actionable threats.

As
demonstrated this week, the internet is
increasingly calling
out cops for cannabis busts, both sarcastically
mocking them
and sincerely pointing out the ethical and logical problems that come
with violently arresting nonviolent people over a plant that is
increasingly found to provide medicinal benefits. But as this week
also shows, it appears cops have yet to listen.

How
the United Nations Supports the American Empire

September

Written
by
JP
Sottile

For
decades the American Right has decried the U.N. for encroaching on
American sovereignty, but the truth is that the U.N. is a chief U.S.
accomplice in violating the sovereignty of other nations, notes J.P.
Sottile.

(CN) — President
Trump opened his big United Nations week … and his famous mouth …
with a
predictable
plug
 for
one of his properties and
some
playful glad-handing
 with
French President Emmanuel Macron. Trump also
scolded the
U.N.’s unwieldy scrum for “not living up to its potential.” He
made a passing reference to the U.N.’s wasteful use of American
money. And he called for “reform” of
the
much-maligned international
forum.

It
was a
stolid
prelude
 to
what will no doubt be “must-see” TV when he speaks to the
UN
General Assembly
 on
Tuesday about North Korea and Iran. And it was a far cry from the way
America’s leading “America Firster” spent the
campaign
lamenting
how unfair the U.N
.
is to the poor schlemiel we call Uncle Sam.

He
is likely to use his speech to throw a little bit of that same red
meat to his base, but his call for reform falls well short of
what
his
supporters want
 …
which is an abrupt end of U.S. involvement in the international body.
They are motivated by a grab-bag of reasons that point to the U.N.
being a threat to their guns, their bank accounts and their God-given
freedom.

Oddly
enough, these conspiratorial narratives have been around for decades
and they mostly center on a grand plan by U.N. elites to abscond
American sovereignty and dissolve the U.S. into a U.N.-led world
government. And the evidence of this is the way the U.N. harasses and
restricts Uncle Sam while siphoning-off America’s wealth. At least,
that’s what some think.

Most
ominously, many object to the way U.N. funds are being used to
quietly deploy
gun-grabbing
U.N. soldiers
 in
advance of
the
big takeover
.
But like so much of Trump’s
intoxicating
irredentism
 …
this is a grievance more likely rooted in a three-day meth bender in
a Tallahassee trailer park than it is from shocking evidence gathered
from well-traveled observation. It’s paranoia. But really, it’s
worse than that.

Why?
Because the U.N. has basically been the complete opposite of what its
angriest critics claim. It is not out to get the U.S. Rather, it has
largely been America’s tool since its inception and, in particular,
it has repeatedly covered Uncle Sam’s overly-exposed butt as he
(a.k.a. “the royal we”) has gone around the world on a three
decade-long military bender since the end of the Cold War.

Yes,
the Gulf War was U.N. approved and the whole world got behind it
because (
April
Glaspie’s backstory
 notwithstanding)
the
prima
facie
 case
was strong and it was a fairly clear-cut example of unwarranted
aggression. That was an easy call.

Global
Violence

But
since then, the calls have been nothing short of murky as the U.S.
has bombed and droned and deployed and invaded and covertly-acted and
regime-changed all around the globe. And the unspoken truth is that
the United Nations has been America’s all-too silent partner as
Uncle Sam traipsed around the planet with a loaded gun, remote
control assassination machines and paper-thin rationales for
intervention.

Although
the U.N. occasionally puts a bug up Israeli Prime Minister
Bibi Netanyahu’s ass on the issue of the slow-motion ethnic
cleansing in the West Bank … what other issue is there where the
U.N. has taken a real stand against the U.S. or U.S. policy
objectives?

Where
is the U.N.’s punishment for being lied to by then-Secretary of
State Colin Powell?  And where is the punishment for destroying
a bystander nation under false pretenses? Where is the punishment for
Abu Ghraib or Gitmo?

Where
is the punishment for America’s summary execution of “suspected
militants” around the Muslim world simply because they are of
“military age” and in the wrong place at the right time … and
for the CIA, it is always the right time to kill a suspect no matter
how wrong the place many be. And where is the condemnation of
America’s destabilizing role as the
world’s
leading supermarket of military hardware
?

How
about mounting civilian causalities from an ever-widening widening
bombing campaign? The U.N. can say the killings are “
unacceptable,”
but does it really matter if there is no sanction? There haven’t
been any sanctions after children were killed in a “
U.S.-backed
raid

in Somalia.  Go figure, right?

Or
what about America’s complicity in the catastrophe of Yemen? Where
are those sanctions? And what exactly has the U.N. done to punish any
number of extra-legal maneuver by a succession of American presidents
over the course of the “Global War on Terror”? The simple answer
is nothing.

Instead,
the Secretary General is largely beholden to the disproportionate
influence of the United States. The Security Council’s agenda is
basically set by the United States … and that’s particularly true
since the Soviet Union collapsed. At the same time, the U.N.’s
occasionally contentious debates do little more than offer the
imprimatur of international approbation or well-noted disdain despite
the functionally inconsequential nature of those debates.

A
Fig Leaf for Empire

Either
way it is a win for Uncle Sam because the presence of a neutered
United Nations provides the United States with a fig leaf just big
enough to cover the dangly parts of America’s otherwise naked
empire.

The
money that does go from the U.S. Treasury into the minutia around the
margins … like UNESCO programs and United Nations Development
Program (UNDP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) and all the
other little crumbs that get thrown around the world … these are
payoffs. This is what the world gets for mostly keeping its mouth
shut in the face of America’s globe-spanning empire. The tiny
amount of aid that trickles down past the bureaucracy … much like
the bureaucracy itself … is not an example of America “getting
played” by wasteful foreigners with hidden agendas. This is America
paying to play the world like organ grinder with a hurdy-gurdy
monkey.

Frankly,
the “
28.5%
of the overall peacekeeping bill

that Trump calls “unfair” (
about
$2.2 billion of the $3.3 billion the U.S. gives to the UN annually
)
is a pittance … particularly if you want the unchecked right to
tell Persians what they can and cannot do in the Persian Gulf, to
tell the Chinese what they can and cannot build in the South China
Sea, and to tell every other power on the face of the earth why they
cannot have the same nuclear capability America not only has … but
is currently “upgrading”
to
the tune of $1.5 trillion
.

Even
more amazingly, the U.S. wants to deny these nations the only real
insurance policy against U.S.-led regime change. And why is that?
Because there ain’t a
Curveball’s chance
in Hell that the U.N. will ever be able to stop Uncle Sam from
marching where he wants, when he wants and for whatever reason he
wants to cook-up. That’s a
historically
provable fact
.

The
only real check on U.S. power is the ability of an asymmetrical power
to go nuclear. And let’s admit it, they are ALL asymmetrical powers
when compared to America’s gargantuan,
trillion-dollar
national security beast
.
And this is why the U.N.’s “partnership” with
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is the only U.N.-associated
agency that really matters. They can’t do much, but they can throw
a wrench into another WMD snipe hunt …
like
they are doing now with the Iran Nuclear Deal
.

But
like it was tested by Team Bush, the IAEA is going to be tested again
as Trump and Netanyahu
make
their bogus case
 …
without a hint of irony … that Iran is the world’s greatest
threat. But that’s really just par for a course that’s riddled
with falsified flags haphazardly stuck into the shallow holes of a
back nine that’s actually been built by and for a club-wielding
Uncle Sam.

A
Cult of Grievance

And
therein lies the truly pernicious part of the Trumped-up case against
the U.N. … because, like so much of America’s growing cult of
grievance, it reflects an ever-widening gap between America’s
stated ideals and its self-serving behavior around the world.

As
we are learning almost daily, Americans tried to square that circle
by electing a profligate liar who fully embodies America’s
insatiable desire to take credit, particularly where none is due …
and to outsource the blame to scapegoats like the U.N., particularly
when the only alternative is a long look into the mirror.

And
in the case of the U.N., that projected guilt is in spite of the fact
that it is often tasked with quietly cleaning up some of the
collateral damage wrought by their main accuser. They just have to do
so without any real power or the funds to do the job. That’s the
simple truth you won’t hear in Trump’s speech … or any speech,
for that matter.

It’s
the fact that the U.N.’s meager amount of “wasteful spending”
doesn’t even begin to cover the cost of doing business when your
business depends of paying the world to look the other way while you
get away with murder.

Hoorde e.e.a. gistermiddag op BBC World Service.

The
most horrifying truth about Trump’s UN speech was revealed by what
he chose not to say [VIDEO]

SEPTEMBER
20TH, 2017
  FRÉA
LOCKLEY

US
President Donald Trump gave his first
speech to
the UN General Assembly (UNGA) on 19 September 2017. He
made frequent
references to ‘world peace’, and was critical of many countries
and regimes around the world. But it was what he didn’t say, and
the countries that he didn’t attack, that was most revealing –
and worrying.

The
‘strongest military ever’

Trump bragged that
the US “will be spending almost $700bn on our military and
defence”; and that “our military will soon be the strongest it
has ever been”. He also
praised America’s
supposed history of not trying to “impose our way of life on
others”. And he
claimed the
US is “guided by outcomes, not ideologies”.

The UNGA is
assembled from all 193 members. And it is the only UN organ where
each member nation has a vote. Speaking to representatives from these
countries, Trump
mentioned ‘sovereignty’
(a state’s authority to govern itself) on numerous occasions. But
as he continued, it became increasingly clear that he was not
referring to all UN member states.

Trump spoke,
for example, of “small regimes” that the “righteous” needed
to “confront”. And the list of US ‘enemies’ began to flow.
And despite his references to respecting the sovereignty of other
nations, he went on to make threats and call for regime changes
around the world.

Total
destruction’

As The
Canary
 has reported,
tensions between the US and North Korea have been rising. And Trump’s
latest rhetoric will do little to ease diplomatic relations. Not
least because he
said:

The
United States has great strength and patience, but if it is forced to
defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally
destroy North Korea.

While
the issue of
sanctions for
North Korea is far from simple, and there was no mention of
the
billions of
dollars the US will make selling weapons to South Korea, the threat
of ‘total destruction’ is unlikely to help anyone.

Hypocrisy

The
US President then turned his attentions to Iran,
calling it
a “murderous regime” which “masks a corrupt dictatorship behind
the false guise of a democracy”.

As The
Canary
 has reported,
Trump has been
ramping up
tensions with Iran since he came to power:

But
not because of democracy or human rights. Instead, his hostility is
largely because Iran’s regional enemies,
Saudi
Arabia and Israel
,
are US allies; because there’s a
barely reported conflict
occurring over oil pipelines in the Middle East; and because Iran
does not
bend
easily
 to
America’s will.

Although
both
Iran and Saudi
Arabia
 have
equally poor human rights
records,
for example, Trump made no criticism at all of Saudi Arabia. In fact,
he
claimed that
Iran had “fuel[ed] Yemen’s civil war”, while
completely ignoring Saudi Arabia’s key role – and
alleged
war
crimes
 –
in the Yemeni conflict.

Nor
did Trump mention the ongoing
atrocities committed
by Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. So it comes as no
surprise that, since Trump’s speech, Israel’s Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu has
said:

In
over 30 years in my experience with the UN, I never heard a bolder or
more courageous speech.

Trump
also
criticised Iran
for ‘restricting internet access’, ‘shooting unarmed student
protesters’, and ‘imprisoning political reformers’. But there
was no mention of US allies like
Turkey which
have
reportedlycommitted
the same abuses.

Guided
by outcomes, not ideologies? Really?

Trump
then got ideological. He first
targeted Cuba,
calling it a “destabilizing regime”; even though
Cuba has
recently
helped Colombia
to end its decades-long civil war.

He
also
called Venezuela’s
democratically elected government a “socialist dictatorship”,
saying its people were “starving”. But while trying to score
political points over
Venezuela –
an
oil-rich nation
which the US has long sought to manipulate by pushing large amounts
of
money into
opposition hands, Trump essentially ignored the widespread famine
across Africa that is also deeply rooted in
political issues;
a crisis that now threatens over
20
million people
 and
which Oxfam has
called the
“largest hunger emergency in the world”.

Trump
then went on to
say:

“From
the Soviet Union to Cuba to Venezuela, wherever true socialism or
communism has been adopted, it has delivered anguish and devastation
and failure”.

Apart
from his inaccurate comparison of socialism and ‘communism’, Trump
also failed to mention China; a nominally communist country which
some
forecast will
overtake the US as the world’s biggest economy in the coming years.
Perhaps Trump’s silence had something to do with his
recent trade
deal with Beijing?

A
dangerous rant, not a speech…

Trump’s
UN rant about the countries he didn’t like wasn’t surprising. But
it was what he didn’t say that was most revealing – and
dangerous. For example, there was no mention of:

  • The
    alleged
    ethnic
    cleansing
     of
Rohingya Muslims in Burma (Myanmar), which has forced
    400,000
    refugees
     to
flee the country in recent weeks.

  • The
fact that US authorities have reportedly
    killed around
    100
    civilians a
    month so far in 2017.

  • The
    alleged war crimes in
    Yemen of
the Saudi Arabian dictatorship (a Western ally heavily
    linked
    to terrorism
    ).

  • The
    alleged
    war
    crimes
     in
both Turkey and Syria of the increasingly authoritarian Turkish
regime of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan (and its
    alleged
    links to
    terrorism).

  • The
fact that US ally Honduras (where US officials allegedly
    helped to
    install a pro-US regime through a 2009
    coup)
has one of the highest murder
    rates in
    the world.

  • The
    dismal human rights
    record of
Western ally Mexico, including the forced ‘disappearance’ of
    43
    student
    teachers
     in
    2014; the
    murder of
thousands of women every year; frequent accusations of
    rigged
    elections [Spanish]
    ;
    and being one the
    most
    difficult
     and dangerous places
in the world to be a journalist.

Essentially,
Trump revealed in his speech a belief in the sovereignty of countries
that are US allies; and a belief in regime change in countries that
are not US allies. He also showed that he is perfectly happy to
exploit human rights abuses for his own political benefit, as long as
it’s not America’s friends committing those abuses. It was not a
speech about peace or human rights. It was Trump laying out his
hypocritically aggressive politics for the whole world to see.

Has
the New York Times Gone Completely Insane?

September
16, 2017 at 11:31 am

Written
by
Robert
Parry

Crossing
a line from recklessness into madness, The New York Times published a
front-page opus suggesting that Russia was behind social media
criticism of Hillary Clinton, reports Robert Parry.

(CN) For
those of us who have taught journalism or worked as editors, a sign
that an article is the product of sloppy or dishonest journalism is
that a key point will be declared as flat fact when it is unproven or
a point in serious dispute – and it then becomes the foundation for
other claims, building a story like a high-rise constructed on sand.

This
use of speculation as fact is something to guard against particularly
in the work of inexperienced or opinionated reporters. But what
happens when this sort of unprofessional work tops page one of The
New York Times one day as a major “investigative” article and
reemerges the next day in even more strident form as a major Times
editorial? Are we dealing then with an inept journalist who got
carried away with his thesis or are we facing institutional
corruption or even a collective madness driven by ideological fervor?

What
is stunning about the
lede
story
 in
last Friday’s print edition of The New York Times is that it offers
no real evidence to support its provocative claim that – as the
headline states – “To Sway Vote, Russia Used Army of Fake
Americans” or its subhead: “Flooding Twitter and Facebook,
Impostors Helped Fuel Anger in Polarized U.S.”

In
the old days, this wildly speculative article, which spills over
three pages, would have earned an F in a J-school class or gotten a
rookie reporter a stern rebuke from a senior editor. But now such
unprofessionalism is highlighted by The New York Times, which boasts
that it is the standard-setter of American journalism, the nation’s
“newspaper of record.”

In
this case, it allows reporter Scott Shane to introduce his thesis by
citing some Internet accounts that apparently used fake identities,
but he ties none of them to the Russian government. Acting like he
has minimal familiarity with the Internet – yes, a lot of people do
use fake identities – Shane builds his case on the assumption that
accounts that cited references to purloined Democratic emails must be
somehow from an agent or a bot connected to the Kremlin.

For
instance, Shane cites the fake identity of “Melvin Redick,” who
suggested on June 8, 2016, that people visit DCLeaks which, a few
days earlier, had posted some emails from prominent Americans, which
Shane states as fact – not allegation – were “stolen … by
Russian hackers.”

Shane
then adds, also as flat fact, that “The site’s phony promoters
were in the vanguard of a cyberarmy of counterfeit Facebook and
Twitter accounts, a legion of Russian-controlled impostors whose
operations are still being unraveled.”

The
Times’ Version

In
other words, Shane tells us, “The Russian information attack on the
election did not stop with the hacking and leaking of Democratic
emails or the fire hose of stories, true, false and in between, that
battered Mrs. Clinton on Russian outlets like RT and Sputnik. Far
less splashy, and far more difficult to trace, was Russia’s
experimentation on Facebook and Twitter, the American companies that
essentially invented the tools of social media and, in this case, did
not stop them from being turned into engines of deception and
propaganda.”

Besides
the obvious point that very few Americans watch RT and/or Sputnik and
that Shane offers no details about the alleged falsity of those “fire
hose of stories,” let’s examine how his accusations are backed
up:

An
investigation by The New York Times, and new research from the
cybersecurity firm FireEye, reveals some of the mechanisms by which
suspected Russian operators used Twitter and Facebook to spread
anti-Clinton messages and promote the hacked material they had
leaked. On Wednesday, Facebook officials disclosed that they had shut
down several hundred accounts that they believe were created by a
Russian company linked to the Kremlin and used to buy $100,000 in ads
pushing divisive issues during and after the American election
campaign. On Twitter, as on Facebook, Russian fingerprints are on
hundreds or thousands of fake accounts that regularly posted
anti-Clinton messages.”

Note
the weasel words: “suspected”; “believe”; ‘linked”;
“fingerprints.” When you see such equivocation, it means that
these folks – both the Times and FireEye – don’t have hard
evidence; they are speculating.

And
it’s worth noting that the supposed “army of fake Americans”
may amount to hundreds out of Facebook’s
two
billion or so monthly users
 and
the $100,000 in ads compare to the company’s annual ad revenue
of
around
$27 billion
.
(I’d do the math but my calculator doesn’t compute such tiny
percentages.)

So,
this “army” is really not an “army” and we don’t even know
that it is “Russian.” But some readers might say that surely we
know that the Kremlin did mastermind the hacking of Democratic
emails!

That
claim is supported by the Jan. 6 “intelligence community
assessment” that was the work of what President Obama’s Director
of National Intelligence James Clapper called “hand-picked”
analysts from three agencies – the Central Intelligence Agency,
National Security Agency and Federal Bureau of Investigation. But, as
any intelligence expert will tell you, if you hand-pick the analysts,
you are hand-picking the conclusions.

Agreeing
with Putin

But
some still might protest that the Jan. 6 report surely presented
convincing evidence of this serious charge about Russian President
Vladimir Putin personally intervening in the U.S. election to help
put Donald Trump in the White House. Well, as it turns out, not so
much, and if you don’t believe me, we can call to the witness stand
none other than New York Times reporter Scott Shane.

Shane wrote at
the time: “What is missing from the [the Jan. 6] public report is
what many Americans most eagerly anticipated: hard evidence to back
up the agencies’ claims that the Russian government engineered the
election attack. … Instead, the message from the agencies
essentially amounts to ‘trust us.’”

So,
even Scott Shane, the author of last Friday’s opus, recognized the
lack of “hard evidence” to prove that the Russian government was
behind the release of the Democratic emails, a claim that both Putin
and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who published a trove of the
emails, have denied. While it is surely possible that Putin and
Assange are lying or don’t know the facts, you might think that
their denials would be relevant to this lengthy investigative
article, which also could have benefited from some mention of Shane’s
own skepticism of last January, but, hey, you don’t want
inconvenient details to mess up a cool narrative.

Yet,
if you struggle all the way to the end of last Friday’s article,
you do find out how flimsy the Times’ case actually is. How, for
instance, do we know that “Melvin Redick” is a Russian impostor
posing as an American? The proof, according to Shane, is that “His
posts were never personal, just news articles reflecting a
pro-Russian worldview.”

As
it turns out, the Times now operates with what must be called a
neo-McCarthyistic approach for identifying people as Kremlin stooges,
i.e., anyone who doubts the truthfulness of the State Department’s
narratives on Syria, Ukraine and other international topics.

Unreliable
Source

In
the article’s last section, Shane acknowledges as much in citing
one of his experts, “Andrew Weisburd, an Illinois online researcher
who has written frequently about Russian influence on social media.”
Shane quotes Weisburd as admitting how hard it is to differentiate
Americans who just might oppose Hillary Clinton because they didn’t
think she’d make a good president from supposed Russian operatives:
“Trying to disaggregate the two was difficult, to put it mildly.”

According
to Shane, “Mr. Weisburd said he had labeled some Twitter accounts
‘Kremlin trolls’ based simply on their pro-Russia tweets and with
no proof of Russian government ties. The Times contacted several such
users, who insisted that they had come by their anti-American,
pro-Russian views honestly, without payment or instructions from
Moscow.”

One
of Weisburd’s “Kremlin trolls” turned out to be 66-year-old
Marilyn Justice who lives in Nova Scotia and who
somehow
reached the conclusion
 that
“Hillary’s a warmonger.” During the 2014 Winter Olympics in
Sochi, Russia, she reached another conclusion: that U.S. commentators
were exhibiting a snide anti-Russia bias perhaps because they indeed
were exhibiting a snide anti-Russia bias.

Shane
tracked down another “Kremlin troll,” 48-year-old Marcel Sardo, a
web producer in Zurich, Switzerland, who dares to dispute the West’s
groupthink that Russia was responsible for shooting down Malaysia
Airlines Flight 17 over Ukraine on July 17, 2014, and the State
Department’s claims that the Syrian government used sarin gas in a
Damascus suburb on Aug. 21, 2013.

Presumably,
if you don’t toe the line on those dubious U.S. government
narratives, you are part of the Kremlin’s propaganda machine. (In
both cases, there actually are serious reasons to doubt the Western
groupthinks which again lack real evidence.)

But
Shane accuses Sardo and his fellow-travelers of spreading “what
American officials consider to be Russian disinformation on election
hacking, Syria, Ukraine and more.” In other words, if you examine
the evidence on MH-17 or the Syrian sarin case and conclude that the
U.S. government’s claims are dubious if not downright false, you
are somehow disloyal and making Russian officials “gleeful at their
success,” as Shane puts it.

But
what kind of a traitor are you if you quote Shane’s initial
judgment after reading the Jan. 6 report on alleged Russian election
meddling? What are you if you agree with his factual observation that
the report lacked anything approaching “hard evidence”? That’s
a point that also dovetails with what Vladimir Putin has been saying
– that “IP addresses can be simply made up. … This is no
proof”?

So
is Scott Shane a “Kremlin troll,” too? Should the Times
immediately fire him as a disloyal foreign agent? What if Putin says
that 2 plus 2 equals 4 and your child is taught the same thing in
elementary school, what does that say about public school teachers?

Out
of such gibberish come the evils of McCarthyism and the death of the
Enlightenment. Instead of encouraging a questioning citizenry, the
new American paradigm is to silence debate and ridicule anyone who
steps out of line.

You
might have thought people would have learned something from the
disastrous groupthink about Iraqi WMD, a canard that the Times and
most of the U.S. mainstream media eagerly promoted.

But
if you’re feeling generous and thinking that the Times’ editors
must have been chastened by their Iraq-WMD fiasco but perhaps had a
bad day last week and somehow allowed an egregious piece of
journalism to lead their front page, your kind-heartedness would be
shattered on Saturday when the Times’ editorial board penned
a
laudatory reprise
 of
Scott Shane’s big scoop.

Stripping
away even the few caveats that the article had included, the Times’
editors informed us that “a startling investigation by Scott Shane
of The New York Times, and new research by the cybersecurity firm
FireEye, now reveal, the Kremlin’s stealth intrusion into the
election was far broader and more complex, involving a cyberarmy of
bloggers posing as Americans and spreading propaganda and
disinformation to an American electorate on Facebook, Twitter and
other platforms. …

Now
that the scheming is clear, Facebook and Twitter say they are
reviewing the 2016 race and studying how to defend against such
meddling in the future. … Facing the Russian challenge will involve
complicated issues dealing with secret foreign efforts to undermine
American free speech.”

But
what is the real threat to “American free speech”? Is it the
possibility that Russia – in a very mild imitation of what the U.S.
government does all over the world – used some Web sites
clandestinely to get out its side of various stories, an accusation
against Russia that still lacks any real evidence?

Or
is the bigger threat that the nearly year-long Russia-gate hysteria
will be used to clamp down on Americans who dare question fact-lite
or fact-free Official Narratives handed down by the State Department
and The New York Times?

CIA 70 jaar: 70 jaar moorden, martelen, coups plegen, nazi’s beschermen, media manipulatie enz. enz………

  • staatsgrepen pleegde, o.a. tegen Iran (destijds Perzië), Congo, Chili en Brazilië.

Happy
Birthday CIA: 7 Truly Terrible Things the Agency Has Done in 70 Years

September
18, 2017 at 5:26 pm

Written
by
Carey
Wedler

(ANTIMEDIA) —
On
Monday, President Trump
tweeted birthday
wishes to the Air Force and the CIA. Both
became
official organizations
70 years ago on September 18, 1947, with the implementation of the
National Security Act of 1947.

After
spending years as a wartime intelligence agency called the Office of
Strategic Services, the agency was solidified as a key player in the
federal government’s operations with then-President Harry Truman’s
authorization.

In
the seventy years since, the CIA has committed a wide variety of
misdeeds, crimes, coups, and violence. Here are seven of the worst
programs they’ve carried out (that are known to the public):

    1.
    Toppling governments around the world
     —
The CIA is best known for its first coup, Operation Ajax, in 1953,
in which it ousted the democratically elected leader of Iran,
Mohammed Mossadegh, reinstating the autocratic Shah, who favored
western oil interests. That operation, which the CIA now
    admits to
waging with British intelligence, ultimately resulted in the
    1979
    revolution
     and
subsequent U.S. hostage crisis. Relations between the U.S. and Iran
remain strained to this day, aptly described by the CIA-coined term
    blowback.”

But
the CIA has had a hand in
toppling a
number of other democratically elected governments, from Guatemala
(1954) and the Congo (1960) to the Dominican Republic (1961), South
Vietnam (1963), Brazil (1964), and Chile (1973). The CIA has aimed to
install leaders who appease American interests,
often
empowering oppressive, violent
dictators
.
This is only a partial list of countries where the CIA covertly
attempted to exploit and manipulate sovereign nations’ governments.

  1. Operation
    Paperclip

In one of the more bizarre CIA plots, the agency and other
government departments employed Nazi scientists both within and
outside the United States to gain an advantage over the
    Soviets. As
    summarized by NPR:

The
aim [of Operation Paperclip] was to find and preserve German weapons,
including biological and chemical agents, but American scientific
intelligence officers quickly realized the weapons themselves were
not enough.

They
decided the United States needed to bring the Nazi scientists
themselves to the U.S. Thus began a mission to recruit top Nazi
doctors, physicists and chemists — including Wernher von Braun, who
went on to design the rockets that took man to the moon.

They
kept this plot secret, though they
admitted to
it upon the release of
Operation
Paperclip: The Secret Intelligence Program That Brought Nazi
Scientists To America
 by
Annie Jacobsen. In a book review, the CIA wrote that “
Henry
Wallace, former vice president and secretary of commerce, believed
the scientists’ ideas could launch new civilian industries and
produce jobs.”

They
praised the book’s historical accuracy, noting “that the
Launch Operations Center at Cape Canaveral, Florida, was headed by
Kurt Debus, an ardent Nazi
.” They acknowledged that “General
Reinhard Gehlen, former head of Nazi intelligence operations against
the Soviets, was hired by the US Army and later by the CIA to operate
600 ex-Nazi agents in the Soviet zone of occupied Germany
.”

Remarkably,
they noted that Jacobsen “understandably questions the morality
of the decision to hire Nazi SS scientists,
” but praise her for
pointing out that it was done to fight Soviets. They also made sure
to add that the Soviets hired Nazis, too, apparently justifying their
own questionable actions by citing their most loathed enemy.

  1. Operation
    CHAOS
     —
The FBI is widely known for its
    COINTELPRO schemes
    to undermine
    communist
movements in the 1950s and anti-war, civil rights
    ,
    and
    black
    power
     movements
in the 1960s, but the CIA has not been implicated nearly as deeply
because, technically, the CIA cannot legally engage in domestic
spying. But that was of little concern to President Lyndon B.
Johnson as opposition to the Vietnam war grew. According to
    former
    New
    York Times
     journalist
and Pulitzer Prize-winner Tim Weiner, as documented in his extensive
    CIA
    historyLegacy
    of Ashes
    ,
Johnson instructed then-CIA Director Richard Helms to break the law:

In
October 1967, a handful of CIA analysts joined in the first big
Washington march against the war. The president regarded protesters
as enemies of the state. He was convinced that the peace movement was
controlled and financed by Moscow and Beijing. He wanted proof. He
ordered Richard Helms to produce it.

Helms
reminded the president that the CIA was barred from spying on
Americans. He says Johnson told him: ‘I’m quite aware of that.
What I want for you is to pursue this matter, and to do what is
necessary to track down the foreign communists who are behind this
intolerable interference in our domestic affairs…’

Helms
obeyed. Weiner wrote:

In
a blatant violation of his powers under the law, the director of
central intelligence became a part-time secret police chief. The CIA
undertook a domestic surveillance operation, code-named Chaos. It
went on for almost seven years… Eleven CIA officers grew long hair,
learned the jargon of the New Left, and went off to infiltrate peace
groups in the United States and Europe
.”

According
to Weiner, “the agency compiled a computer index of 300,000
names of American people and organizations, and extensive files on
7,200 citizens. It began working in secret with police departments
all over America
.” Because they could not draw a “clear
distinction” between the new far left and mainstream opposition to
the war, the CIA spied on every major peace organization in the
country. President Johnson also wanted them to prove a connection
between foreign communists and the black power movement. “The
agency tried its best
,” Weiner noted, ultimately noting that
the CIA never found a shred of evidence that linked the leaders
of the American left or the black-power movement to foreign
governments.

  1. Infiltrating
    the media
     — Over the years, the CIA has successfully
gained influence in the news media, as well as popular media like
film and television. Its influence over the news began almost
immediately after the agency was formed. As Weiner explained, CIA
Director Allen Dulles established firm ties with newspapers:

Dulles
kept in close touch with the men who ran the New York Times, The
Washington Post, and the nation’s leading weekly magazines. He
could pick up the phone and edit a breaking story, make sure an
irritating foreign correspondent was yanked from the field, or hire
the services of men such as Time’s Berlin bureau chief and
Newsweek’s man in Tokyo
.”

He
continued:

It
was second nature for Dulles to plant stories in the press. American
newsrooms were dominated by veterans of the government’s wartime
propaganda branch, the Office of War Information…The men who
responded to the CIA’s call included Henry Luce and his editors at
Time, Life, and Fortune; popular magazines such as Parade, the
Saturday Review, and Reader’s Digest; and the most powerful
executives at CBS News. Dulles built a public-relations and
propaganda machine that came to include more than fifty news
organizations, a dozen publishing houses, and personal pledges of
support from men such as Axel Springer, West Germany’s most
powerful press baron
.”

The
CIA’s influence had not waned by 1977 when journalist Carl
Bernstein
reported on
publications with CIA agents in their employ, as well as “
more
than 400 American journalists who in the past twenty five years
have secretly carried out assignments for the Central Intelligence
Agency.”

The
CIA has also successfully
advised
on and influenced
 numerous
television shows,
such
as
Homeland and 24 and films like Zero
Dark Thirty
and Argo,
which push narratives that ultimately favor the agency. According to
Tricia Jenkins, author of
The
CIA in Hollywood: How the Agency Shapes Film & Television
a
concerted agency effort began in the 1990s to counteract negative
public perceptions of the CIA, but their influence reaches back
decades. In the 1950s, filmmakers produced films
for the
CIA
,
including the 1954 film adaptation of George Orwell’s
Animal
Farm
.

Researchers
Tom Secker and Matthew Alford, whose work has been
published in
the
American
Journal of Economics and Sociology
,
say their recent Freedom of Information Act requests have shown that
the CIA — along with the military — have
influenced over
1,800 films and television shows, many of which have nothing to do
with CIA or military themes.

  1. Drug-induced
    Mind control
     –
In the 1950s, the CIA began experimenting with drugs to determine
whether they might be useful in extracting information.
    As
    Smithsonian
    Magazine
     has noted of
    the MKUltra project:

The
project, which continued for more than a decade, was originally
intended to make sure the United States government kept up with
presumed Soviet advances in mind-control technology. It ballooned in
scope and its ultimate result, among other things, was illegal drug
testing on thousands of Americans
.”

Further:

The
intent of the project was to study ‘the use of biological and
chemical materials in altering human behavior,’
according
to
 the
official testimony of CIA director Stansfield Turner in 1977. The
project was conducted in extreme secrecy, Turner said, because of
ethical and legal questions surrounding the program and the negative
public response that the CIA anticipated if MKUltra should become
public.

Under
MKUltra, the CIA gave itself the authority to research how drugs
could:’ ‘promote the intoxicating effects of alcohol;’ ‘render
the induction of hypnosis easier;’ ‘enhance the ability of
individuals to withstand privation, torture and coercion;’ produce
amnesia, shock and confusion; and much more. Many of these questions
were investigated using unwitting test subjects, like drug-addicted
prisoners, marginalized sex workers and terminal cancer patients–
‘people who could not fight back,’
in
the words of
 Sidney
Gottlieb, the chemist who introduced LSD to the CIA.

Further,
as Weiner noted:

Under
its auspices, seven prisoners at a federal penitentiary in Kentucky
were kept high on LSD for seventy-seven consecutive days. When the
CIA slipped the same drug to an army civilian employee, Frank Olson,
he leaped out of the window of a New York Hotel.”

Weiner
added that senior CIA officers destroyed “almost all of the
records” of the programs, but that while the “evidence that
remains is fragmentary…it strongly suggests that use of secret
prisons for the forcible drug-induced questioning of suspect agents
went on throughout the 1950s.

Years
later, the CIA would be accused of distributing crack-cocaine into
poor black communities, though this is currently less substantiated
and
supported mostly
by accounts of those who claim to have been involved.

  1. Brutal
    torture tactics
     —
    More recently, the CIA was
    exposed for
sponsoring abusive, disturbing terror tactics against detainees at
prisons housing terror suspects. An extensive 2014 Senate report
documented agents committing sexual abuse, forcing detainees to
stand on broken legs, waterboarding them so severely it sometimes
led to convulsions, and imposing forced rectal feeding, to name a
few examples. Ultimately, the agency had very little actionable
intelligence to show for their torture tactics but
    lied to
suggest they did, according to the torture report. Their torture
    tactics
    led the
International Criminal Court to suggest the CIA, along with the U.S.
armed forces, could be guilty of war crimes for their abuses.

    7.
Arming radicals — The CIA has a long habit of arming
radical, extremist groups that view the United States as enemies. In
1979, the CIA set out to support Afghan rebels in their bid to
defeat the Soviet occupation of the Middle Eastern country. As
Weiner wrote, in 1979, “Prompted by Zbigniew Brzezinski,
President Carter signed a covert-action order for the CIA to provide
the Afghan rebels with medical aid, money, and propaganda.

As
Weiner detailed later in his book:

The
Pakistani intelligence chiefs who doled out the CIA’s guns and
money favored the Afghan factions who proved themselves most capable
in battle. Those factions also happened to be the most committed
Islamists. No one dreamed that the holy warriors could ever turn
their jihad against the United States
.”

Though
some speculate the CIA directly armed Osama bin Laden, that is yet to
be fully proven or admitted. What is clear is that western
media
revered him
as a valuable fighter against the Soviets, that he
arrived to
fight in Afghanistan in1980, and that al-Qaeda emerged from the
mujahideen, who were beneficiaries of the CIA’s program. Stanford
University has
noted that Bin
Laden and Abdullah Azzam, a prominent Palestinian cleric,
established
Al Qaeda from the fighters, financial resources, and training and
recruiting structures left over from the anti-Soviet war
.”
Much of those “structures” were provided by the agency.
Intentionally or not, the CIA helped fuel the rise of the terror
group.

Weiner
noted that as the CIA failed in other countries like Libya, by the
late 1980s “Only the mujahideen, the Afghan holy warriors, were
drawing blood and scenting victory. The CIA’s Afghan operation was
now a $700-million-dollar-a-year-program
” and represented 80%
of the overseas budget of the clandestine services. “The CIA’s
briefing books never answered the question of what would happen when
a militant Islamic army defeated the godless invaders of
Afghanistan
,” though Tom Twetten, “the number two man in
the clandestine service in the summer of 1988
,” was tasked with
figuring out what would happen with the Afghan rebels. “We don’t
have any plan
,” he concluded.

Apparently
failing to learn their lesson, the CIA adopted nearly the exact same
policy in Syria decades later, arming what they called “moderate
rebels” against the Assad regime. Those groups
ultimately
aligned with
al-Qaeda groups. One CIA-backed faction made headlines last year
for
beheading a
child (though President Trump cut off the CIA program in June, the
military
continues to
align with “moderate” groups).

Unsurprisingly,
this list is far from complete. The CIA has engaged in a wide variety
of
extrajudicial
practice
,
and there are likely countless transgressions we have yet to learn
about.

As
Donald Trump cheers the birthday of an agency he himself
once
criticized,
it should be abundantly clear that the nation’s covert spy agency
deserves scrutiny and skepticism — not celebration.

Pentagon
Caught Falsifying Paperwork for Weapons Transfers to Syrian Rebels

September
13, 2017 at 9:56 am

Written
by
Tyler
Durden

(ZHE— A
new
bombshell
joint report
 issued
by two international weapons monitoring groups Tuesday confirms that
the Pentagon continues to ship record breaking amounts of weaponry
into Syria and that
the
Department of Defense is scrubbing its own paper trail.
 On
Tuesday the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP)
and the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN) produced
conclusive evidence that not only is the Pentagon currently involved
in shipping up to $2.2 billion worth of weapons from a shady network
of private dealers to allied partners in Syria – mostly old Soviet
weaponry – but is actually manipulating paperwork such as end-user
certificates,
presumably
in order to hide US involvement.

The
OCCRP and BIRN published
internal
US defense procurement files
 after
an extensive investigation which found that the Pentagon is running a
massive weapons trafficking pipeline which originates in the Balkans
and Caucuses, and ends in Syria and Iraq. The program is ostensibly
part of the US train, equip, and assist campaign for the Syrian
Democratic Forces (SDF, a coalition of YPG/J and Arab FSA groups
operating primarily in Syria’s east). The arms transfers are
massive and the program looks to continue for years. According
to
Foreign
Policy’s
 (FP)
 coverage
of the report:

The
Department of Defense has budgeted $584 million specifically for this
Syrian operation for the financial years 2017 and 2018, and has
earmarked another $900 million of spending on Soviet-style munitions
between now and 2022.
The
total, $2.2 billion, likely understates the flow of weapons to Syrian
rebels in the coming years.

But
perhaps more shocking is the following admission that
Pentagon
suppliers have links with known criminal networks
,
also from
FP:

According
to the report, many of the weapons suppliers — primarily in
Eastern Europe but also in the former Soviet republics, including
Kazakhstan, Georgia, and Ukraine —
 have
both links to organized crime throughout Eastern Europe and spotty
business records.

The
sheer amount of material necessary for the Pentagon program —
one
ammunition factory announced it planned to hire 1,000 new employees
in 2016 to help cope with the demand
 — has
reportedly stretched suppliers to the limit, forcing the Defense
Department to relax standards on the materials it’s willing to
accept.

It
is likely that the organized crime association is the reason why the
Pentagon has sought to alter its records. In addition, the sheer
volume of weaponry continuing to ship to the Syrian battlefield
and
other
parts
 of
the Middle East means
inevitable
proliferation among unsavory terror groups
 –
a phenomenon which has already been
exhaustively
documented
 in
connection with the
now
reportedly closed CIA program
 to
topple the Syrian government. The associations and alliances among
some of the Arab former FSA groups the DoD continues to support in
the north and east remains fluid, which means means
US-supplied
weapons will continue to pass among groups with no accountability for
where they end up.

One
of the authors of the OCCRP/BIRN report, Ivan Angelovski, told
Foreign Policy that,
The
Pentagon is removing any evidence in their procurement records that
weapons are actually going to the Syrian opposition.”
The
report is based on internal US government memos which reveal that
weapons shipment destination locations have been scrubbed from
original documents.

Falsified
and altered Pentagon procurement documents:

Balkan
Insight
,
which is hosting the original investigative report:
Seven
US procurement documents were whitewashed to remove reference to
‘Syria’ after reporters contacted the Pentagon to enquire about
whether the exporting countries – Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia,
Ukraine and Georgia – had been informed of the destination.”

The
fact that
Foreign
Policy
,
which is the foremost establishment national security publication in
the world, would admit that the Pentagon’s Syria weapons
procurement program is tied to East European organized crime is
itself hugely significant. At this point the evidence is simply so
overwhelming that even establishment sources like FP – which itself
has generally been pro-interventionist on Syria – can’t deny it.

FP
further reports that the Pentagon program
appears
to be turbocharging a shadowy world of Eastern European arms
dealers.”
 And
adds further that, “the Pentagon is reportedly removing
documentary evidence about just who will ultimately be using the
weapons, potentially weakening one of the bulwarks of international
protocols against illicit arms dealing.”

Map/Infographic
produced as part of the OCCRP/BIRN report, itself confirmed by
Foreign Policy magazine. Notice the map denotes that prior CIA
weapons went directly to Idlib province (northwest, section in green)
and the Golan border region (south). Both of these areas were and
continue to be occupied by al-Qaeda (in Idlib, AQ’s Hay’at Tahrir
al-Sham).
In
Idlib specifically, analysts have
confirmed
genocidal cleansing of religious minorities
 conducted
by AQ “rebels” directly assisted by CIA weapons.

Late
last month we featured the story of
Bulgarian
journalist Dilyana Gaytandzhieva, who was fired from her job
 after
being interrogated by national intelligence officials for exposing
the same Pentagon arms network which is the subject of the latest
OCCRP/BIRN investigation. At the time,
Al
Jazeera
 was
the only major international outlet which covered the story, which
confirmed that Bulgarian agents interrogated Gaytandzhieva and “tried
to find out her sources.” An anonymous source had leaked a
large trove of internal government files connected to the arms
trafficking to the East European-based
Trud
Newspaper
 journalist,
which was the basis of her reporting. The newest investigation
released Tuesday appears to include some of the same documents,
also
confirmed by
Gayandzhieva.
