No,
Russia Didn’t Use Propaganda on Social Media to Incite US Pipeline
Protests

March

Kevin
Gosztola

(SP Op-ed) — A
“staff report” from Republicans on the United States House
Science, Space, and Technology Committee offers little evidence to
prove allegations of Russian efforts to influence U.S. energy markets
through “social media propaganda” to incite pipeline protests.

Nonetheless, the
report
,
pushed by Republican chairman Representative Lamar Smith, went
virtually unquestioned when it was covered by U.S. media.

What
the report reveals are several Twitter and Instagram posts that
Republicans claim were posted by “Russian agents” linked to the
Internet Research Agency (IRA), the troll farm which has become a
focus of narratives that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential
election.

The
report recycles unsubstantiated news reporting that strongly
suggested the Russian government was behind anti-fracking activism in
the U.S. It contends these posts and tweets demonstrate the “broad
nature of Russia’s meddling and to reveal Russia’s attempts to
deceive and influence the American public, especially as related to
domestic energy issues.”

Between
2015 and 2017, there were an estimated 9,097 Russian posts or tweets
regarding U.S. energy policy or a current energy event on Twitter,
Facebook and Instagram,” according to the report. “Between 2015
and 2017, there were an estimated 4,334 IRA accounts across Twitter,
Facebook and Instagram.”

To
understand how these numbers are incredibly minuscule, there are
about 95 million posts to Instagram per day and 800 million or more
users, as of September 2017. About 500,000 comments, 293,000 status
updates, and 136,000 photos are posted to Facebook daily. There are
over 2 billion active users on Facebook. On Twitter, about 500
million or more tweets are posted each day. There are 330 million
active monthly users.

House
Republicans did not break down the number of IRA accounts by
platform. But if the 4,334 accounts were all Twitter accounts, it
would mean the number of active Russian accounts represented less
than 0.0013 percent of Twitter users. That percentage would be much
smaller for Facebook and Instagram.

As
for reported posts and tweets, because Republicans are pulling from
contents that appeared between 2015 and 2017, they are essentially
revealing an average of 3,000 or so posts and tweets appeared each
year.

What
is 3,000 out of the 95 million posts to Instagram? What is 3,000 out
of the hundreds of thousands of comments and updates to Facebook?
What is 3,000 out of 500 million or more tweets?

These
are smaller than microscopic numbers. They barely can be said to
represent a broad influence campaign by Russia to undermine U.S.
fossil fuel industries and incite opposition to American “energy
independence.”

The
“Russian tweets” are not even disinformation. They mostly appear
to be messages containing advocacy from Senator Bernie Sanders,
presidential candidate in the 2016 election, and his supporters. For
example:

These
tweets reference the health impact of natural gas fracking. They
mention the link between earthquakes and fracking. They note
political efforts to ban fracking through state ballot initiatives.
What they do not do is promote disinformation, such as falsehoods
about the fossil fuel industry.

The
report continues a blatant agenda by Republicans to discredit climate
activism against oil and gas pipelines. It even argues Russians are
trying to make “useful idiots” of “unwitting
environmental groups and activists in furtherance of its energy
influence operations.”

In
July 2017, Smith and Republican Representative Randy
Weber
urged Treasury
Secretary Steven Mnuchin to “investigate whether the Kremlin [was]
bankrolling green campaigns against the fracking technology that
helped the U.S. overtake Russia in gas production.”

But
as POLITICO noted, “Allegations have circulated for years that
Moscow has sought to discourage European countries from developing
their own natural gas supplies as an alternative to Russian fuel. And
conservatives have sought to extend those concerns to the U.S.—though
there’s little but innuendo to base them on.”

A
surge in activism against pipeline projects, especially as the
impacts of climate change intensify, has brought pressure to fossil
fuel industry interests. Smith is one of the industry’s most ardent
defenders. He even publicly contends climate change is still subject
to debate when it is settled science.

An
Inside Climate News report
details how
the fossil fuel industry is a major contributor to science committee
members. It donated $8 million from 2006 to 2016, making it the
leading source of “industry political action committee money.”
The oil and gas industry  is one of Smith’s biggest
contributors, “with $764,000 in donations over the course of his
career in Congress.”

Smith
frequently alleges charges of “secret science” against government
agencies that seek to regulate coal-fired power plants, oil
refineries, and energy pollution in general. He engages in the very
kind of efforts to provoke discord and disruption that the House
science committee report condemns. It is all to manufacture doubt in
order to tie up policy deliberations in debate so they do not affect
companies’ profits.

While
this report is clearly rubbish, Democrats have not said anything to
challenge the allegations. Perhaps, this is because they are fully
invested in the narrative that Russia is meddling in all parts of
American discourse on social media.

Smith
invokes the bipartisan consensus on “Russian manipulation.”
Democratic Senator Ben Cardin recently published a report that
stated, “According to NATO officials, Russian intelligence agencies
also reportedly provide covert support to European environmental
groups to campaign against fracking for natural gas,
thereby keeping the EU more dependent on Russian supplies. A study by
the Wilfried Martens Center for European Studies reports that the
Russian government has invested $95 million in NGOs that seek to
persuade EU governments to end shale gas exploration.”

During
a tinePublic
speech in
2014, former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton accused
“phony environmental groups” that she believes are funded by the
Russians of being responsible for the opposition to oil pipelines and
natural gas fracking. “I’m a big environmentalist, but these were
funded by the Russians to stand against any effort, oh that pipeline,
that fracking, that whatever will be a problem for you, and a lot of
the money supporting that message was coming from Russia.”

Much
of the notion among conservatives that U.S. climate activism is
funded by Russia stems from a report by a front group, the
Environmental Policy Alliance, operated by Berman & Co., which is
run by Rick Berman.

Berman
is known for
attacks against
Mothers Against Drunk Driving. He also has defended Big Tobacco from
anti-smoking campaigns. He previously
boasted,
“If the oil and gas industry wants to prevent its opponents from
slowing its efforts to drill in more places, it must be prepared to
employ tactics like digging up embarrassing tidbits about
environmentalists and liberal celebrities” and urged industry
executives “to exploit emotions like fear, greed and anger and turn
them against the environmental groups.”

Part
of Berman’s efforts to exploit emotions involved accusing U.S.
environmental organization of accepting money from the Sea Change
Foundation, which allegedly accepted funds from a Bermuda-based
company called Klein Limited with executives tied to Russian oil and
gas companies.

We
double-check confirmed that the origin of the funds we’re getting
from Sea Change is through a donor, not from Russia,” Melinda
Pierce, Sierra Club’s legislative director,
declared.
“It’s a private U.S. citizen who cares about climate change and
has invested in the kind of work that the Sierra Club does to move us
off dirty energy to clean energy.”

This
campaign to smear U.S. environmental organizations as agents of the
Russian oil and gas industry was picked up by Republicans. It
influenced a 2014
report,
“The Chain of Environmental Command: How a Club of Billionaires and
Their Foundations Control the Environmental Movement and Obama’s
EPA.”

Back
then, it was innuendo and unsubstantiated claims intended to help the
industry defend itself against pipeline activists. It remains
industry-driven propaganda.

The
only difference now is that the current political climate embraces a
bipartisan consensus that Russians will stop at nothing to sow
discord. Democrats do not see conservative political action
committees and right-wing industry front groups as responsible for
political turmoil over issues mired in contentious debate. They see
Russians, and even if they do not deny the reality of climate change,
that leaves U.S. policy vulnerable to actions that are aimed at
protecting fossil fuel companies and drowning out protest from
citizens concerned about climate change.

In

Hetzelfde gebeurt overigens in Zuid-Amerika……

New
Zealand Grants Mountain the Same Legal Rights as a Person

Darius

(ANTIMEDIA)  New
Zealand just granted a mountain the same legal rights as a person,
the
Guardian reports.
Located in New Zealand’s North Island, Mount Taranaki will be the
third geographic landmark in the country to be deemed a “legal
personality.”

Mount
Taranaki
 is
120,000 years old and is also a dormant volcano that last erupted in
1775. Under the new designation, if a person or entity brings harm to
the mountain, the legal rights protecting the mountain will be the
same afforded to an ordinary individual. The move also entails that
the land “owns itself” and cannot be owned by another human.

From the New
Zealand Herald
:

Guardianship
of the sacred mountain will be shared between eight local Maori
tribes (New Zealand’s indigenous population) and the government.
The decision is a long-awaited acknowledgment of the indigenous
people’s relationship with the mountain. They view it as an
ancestor and family member.

All
Crown-owned land within the National Park will be vested in a legal
personality, meaning the land will own itself – a special legal
status that has previously been granted to Te Urewera and the
Whanganui River.

The
concept was considered groundbreaking and was used to neutralise the
controversial issue of ownership. Instead of human ownership over the
environment, it embraces the Maori relationship with the land and
recognises its cultural and spiritual significance.”

The
acknowledgment was made through a record of understanding, which was
signed last week. The record of understanding also noted that
the mountain is an ever-present and personified ancestor that
transcend[s] our perception of time, location, culture and
spirit.

Their
presence pervades our scenery, projecting mystery, adventure and
beauty, capturing our attention and our imagination in how humanity
can be closely bound to a landscape,”
 it
stated.

According
to Andrew Little, New Zealand’s minister for treaty negotiations
(in this case, the
 Treaty
of Waitangi
),
Mount Taranaki will now become a “legal personality in its own
right,” offering the “best possible protection” for the
increasingly popular tourist attraction.

As
a New Plymouth local I grew up under the gaze of the maunga
[mountain] so I’m particularly pleased with the respect accorded to
local tangata whenua [local people] and the legal protection and
personality given to the mountain,”
 Little
said.

Today’s
agreements are a major milestone in acknowledging the grievances and
hurt from the past as the Taranaki iwi experienced some of the worst
examples of Crown behaviour in the 19th century.”

One
of the more successful aspects of the development is that as part of
the agreement, the New Zealand government is required to apologize to
local Maori for the previous breaches of the Treaty of Waitangi it
has made against the mountain. However, local tribes will not receive
any monetary redress as compensation.

The
recent move follows a Waitangi Tribunal report from 1996 that said
there was no valid basis for the government’s confiscation of the
Mountain from the Maori in the first place.

It
[Mt Taranaki] provides that sense of place, social association and
identity,”
 Taranaki
Iwi’s (Tribe) Chief Negotiator, Jamie Tuuta, told Fairfax media.

Earlier
this year, New Zealand
 granted the
90-mile Whanganui River the same legal rights as a person in a
similar move. India
 followed suit
not long after. New Zealand also granted similar rights to a
 national
park
 known
as Te Urewera.

We
can trace our genealogy to the origins of the universe, and
therefore, rather than us being masters of the natural world, we are
part of it,”
 stated
Gerrard Albert, who negotiated legal personhood for the Whanganui
river.

Missing
from the discussion on this issue is that the New Zealand government
will retain guardianship of the mountain — the same New Zealand
government that is working to cement the Trans-Pacific Partnership
Agreement (TPPA) with
full
knowledge
 that
many Maori claimants view the agreement as detrimental to their
native rights.

Despite
its positive implications, also missing from this topic is the notion
of where such a move will lead the human race in the years to come,
particularly in relation to artificial intelligence (AI). Saudi
Arabia recently granted citizenship status to a
 robot,
and it is not too farfetched to assume that in the very near future
we will be seeing legal protection afforded to more than just our
sacred mountains and rivers.

How
to Be Less Ignorant This Thanksgiving

November

A
day seen by many Americans as a day of celebration, a day for family,
and a day for giving thanks, is perceived by many Native Americans as
a day filled with ignorance, a day filled with anger and a day full
of mourning.

(MPN) —
While millions of Americans prepare this week to get into the
holiday spirit, beginning with Thanksgiving, how many are prepared to
view the day through an accurate lens? While to many Americans the
holiday serves as a reminder to give thanks, it is seen as a day of
mourning by countless others. The truth is: European migrants
brutally murdered Native Americans, stole their lands, and continue
to do so today.

Start
by acknowledging that almost everything taught about Thanksgiving in
most schools across the country is a lie. Most Americans remember
celebrations in elementary school in honor of Thanksgiving that
included activities ranging from coloring pages to parades to plays.
Everyone knows the drill: The Pilgrims fled Europe before landing on
Plymouth Rock. The resident natives taught them how to farm the land,
they all sat down for a big meal in 1621, and everyone lived happily
ever after in the United States.

This
brief history lesson is often followed by teepees made hastily from
paper bags and headdresses for all children in the classroom using
brown paper and brightly colored feathers. Some children are assigned
the role of Pilgrims while others are told to play Indian for the
day. Younger children make turkeys shaped like their hands while high
school students are allowed to glimpse a few select representations
of the gruesome battles involved in colonization.

Unfortunately,
the watered-down, inaccurate teaching of the first Thanksgiving
continues into junior high, high school and even into college, with
most Americans never actually learning the truth. If non-Native
Americans are to learn the truth of the day, it is best to go
directly to the source. While there were two parties involved in this
supposed great feast, most Americans reference only the story told by
the Pilgrims, only the story fed by the colonizers, only the story
shaped by textbook manufacturers over the years.

Celebration
of a Massacre

It
may come as a surprise to some that the first official Thanksgiving
Day was held in 1637. Feasts of thankfulness were commonplace in both
European and Native American circles long before the first meeting
between the Wampanoag tribe, which inhabited southeastern
Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and the Pilgrims when they first
landed back in 1621. In 1637, Governor John Winthrop called for an
official day of thanks to celebrate the massacre of more than 700
people from the Pequot Tribe, a gruesome and generally unknown start
to such a widespread and popular holiday. “This day forth shall be
a day of celebration and thanksgiving for subduing the Pequots,”
read the proclamation.

If
Thanksgiving is to be celebrated accurately, it must be viewed
through a Native American lens. The best way to do that is to ask a
Native American.

Watch
| Native Americans share their feelings about the history of
Thanksgiving and how it impacts their lives to this day:

Thoughts
and emotions communicated in this video, as well as in conversations
with Native Americans, are in stark contrast to the thoughts of
gratitude and love conventionally expressed by non-Native Americans
when it comes to Thanksgiving. A day seen by many as a day of
celebration, a day for family, and a day for giving thanks, is
perceived as a day filled with ignorance, a day filled with anger and
a day full of mourning. How can these incredibly conflicting views of
the same day and the same events possibly exist within the same
country?

Colonization
Then and Now

law enforcement at the Oceti Sakowin camp as part of the final sweep

Colonization
of this continent began long ago and continues to this day,
constantly shape-shifting but causing significant harm in all its
many guises. From the disappearance of Native women to
the
fight for clean water
,
and from the police murder of a Native boy to threats of the sale of
Native lands, the Native struggle against colonization is seemingly
unrelenting.

This
time last year, Native Americans and their allies were brutally
attacked by police while defending clean water at Standing Rock in
North Dakota. In freezing temperatures, water cannons, along with
rubber bullets, were used by militarized police to keep water
protectors at bay. Over the course of the entire struggle at Standing
Rock,
excessive
force and violence
 were
used by police and hired security multiple times.

Dakota, just north of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, after a
symbolic feast on the town’s main thoroughfare. (Emma Fiala)

On
Thanksgiving Day last year, a protest in the town of Mandan, ND was
met with a show of force while water protectors on the front lines at
the Oceti Sakowin camp at Standing Rock were attacked by police for
crossing the river at the base of Turtle Island. Native Americans and
their allies persisted and
found
reasons to be thankful
 in
the face of oppression.

Recently,
a 14-year-old Native American boy, Jason Ike Pero, was killed by an
Ashland County Sheriff’s Deputy on the Bad River reservation in
northwestern Wisconsin. The Bad River Band of the Lake Superior
Ojibwe
has
requested
 the
Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice to open a
criminal civil rights investigation into the incident. They claim the
media and  Wisconsin Department of Justice are trying falsely to
“describe Jason as being a troubled young man that acted in a
violent manner towards the deputy,” a tactic seen again and again
when it comes to police violence against minorities.

Just
this week, Nebraska’s Public Utility Commission approved the permit
for the Keystone XL pipeline, threatening Indigenous lands, despite
a
major leak
 in
the Keystone pipeline just days prior. Pipelines and other
projects
threaten Native
lands across the country, with the Trump administration seemingly
more focused on profit than on protecting both Native and
national
lands
.

Celebrating
Thoughtfully

Once
the truth is acknowledged, how do non-Natives move forward? The
Thanksgiving tradition is now so deeply rooted in American culture
that doing away with the holiday completely is unrealistic, and would
further do little to repair the harm that has been done over the
years.

Here
are some suggestions on how Americans can avoid the traditional
whitewash and hypocrisy, and tailor their Thanksgiving
celebrations thoughtfully:

  • Donate
to local Native American organizations or to those
    fighting
    to protect their lands
    .

  • Cook
    traditional Native
    foods.

  • Invite
a Native neighbor and listen to what they have to say.

  • Teach
family, friends, children an accurate history of Thanksgiving and
colonization, using these books suggested by
    American
    Indians in Children’s Literature
    .

  • Make
an informed decision with family and decide together whether
celebrating Thanksgiving is appropriate and comfortable.

When
it comes to halting and healing from colonization there is much work
to be done. Thanksgiving Day and it’s brutal history are an
excellent and timely place to begin.

Nebraska Regulators Approve Keystone Pipeline Route Days After South Dakota Leak, Shutdown

by Tyler Durden

Nov 20, 2017 11:29 AM

TransCanada received its final required pipeline route approval, winning Nebraska’s permission to build its long-delayed Keystone XL crude oil pipeline across the state… just days after a 5,000 barrel spill in South Dakota shut the pipeline.

decision will almost certainly be challenged in court.

Just a few short days after 210,000 gallons of crude oil spilled in South Dakota, Bloomberg reports that Nebraska’s Public Service Commission voted three to two Monday, removing one of the last hurdles to the Calgary-based company’s construction of the $8 billion, 1,179-mile conduit (1,897-kilometer), which has been on its drawing boards since 2008.

For those who aren’t familiar with the project, the pipeline links Canada’s Alberta oil sands to U.S. refineries.  While a portion of the pipeline has been operating, part of it had still not been approved by state regulators… until today’s decision by Nebraska.

However, as Bloomberg notes, the commission approved an alternative route.

Jane Kleeb, president of the environmental advocacy group Bold Alliance, said green-lighting an alternative route may have helped the commission reach a “middle ground solution.”

At the same time it opens new questions that she said her group would explore in federal court. She argued the secondary route wasn’t adequately vetted.

That view mirrored a dissenting opinion filed by Commissioner Crystal Rhoades. She wrote that TransCanada didn’t meet “the burden of proof” in proving that the pipeline is in the state’s public interest, and she said the alternative route needed more study on both the state and federal level. For example, she said, Nebraska’s Department of Environmental Quality didn’t analyze the alternative route at all in its 2013 report.

“It is clear” TransCanada “never intended it to be considered,” Rhoades said.

In its post-hearing brief, TransCanada told the panel its “preferred route was the product of literally years of study, analysis and refinement by Keystone, federal agencies and Nebraska agencies,” and that no alternate route, even one paralleling the Keystone mainline as the approved path does, was truly comparable.

TransCanada’s share price is up on the news…

Notably, with Nebraska’s go-ahead in hand, TransCanada still must formally decide whether to proceed with construction on the line, which would send crude from Hardisty, Alberta, through Montana and South Dakota to Nebraska, where it will connect to pipelines leading to U.S. Gulf Coast refineries. The company’s open season for gauging producers’ interest closed late last month, and TransCanada executives have indicated that they’ve secured enough shipping commitments to make the project commercially worthwhile.

BREAKING:
Keystone Pipeline Shut down After Leaking 210,000 Gallons of Oil

November

Written

(ANTIMEDIA) —
The
contentious Keystone Pipeline has been temporarily shut down after a
210,000-gallon oil leak was discovered in South Dakota.

According
to local
ABC
News
affiliate KSFY
:

Brian
Walsh with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) tells
KSFY News they were alerted to the leak at 10:30 a.m. Thursday
morning by TransCanada.

The
leak was in the Keystone Pipeline located in an agricultural area in
Marshall County. There have been no reports of the oil entering any
waterways or water systems at this time.

Walsh
said 5,000 barrels of oil have leaked, and at 42 gallons a barrel,
that totals 210,000 gallons of oil.

The
pipeline has been shut off and the leak has been covered. An
emergency response plan has been activated to get more staff and
contractors to the site for clean up.”

The
Keystone Pipeline, which carries crude oil from Canada’s tar sands
to American refineries, has been a source of contention for years and
was
suspended under
the Obama administration. One of President Trump’s first acts in
office was authorizing the construction of both the Keystone and
Dakota Access pipelines.

Environmentalists
and Native American groups in the U.S. and Canada opposed both
projects. The recently completed Dakota Access
Pipeline also
experienced
a leak, albeit a smaller one,
earlier
this year, joining
numerous other pipelines across
the country that have had
spills in
2017.

Nebraska
Panel Won’t Consider This Week’s Spill in Keystone XL Pipeline
Decision

“That
the Nebraska commissioners won’t consider safety in their decision
on Keystone XL should alarm everyone.”

(COMMONDREAMS) — Climate
justice groups and local pipeline opponents in Nebraska are
condemning an announcement by the state’s Public Service Commission
(PSC) which indicated late Friday that
a
massive underground spill of the existing Keystone pipeline
 in
South Dakota this week will have no bearing on a pivotal approval
decision to build the Keystone XL pipeline scheduled for Monday.

PSC spokesperson Deb Collins, citing a state law passed in 2011 which prevents the commission from factoring pipeline safety or the possibility of leaks into its decisions, said the panel’s decision “will be based on the evidence in the record.”

Local opponents of the project, as the Lincoln Journal Star notes, were “incensed” by the announcement.

“There is a reason TransCanada and the big oil lobby did not want this information on the record,” said Jane Kleeb, director of the Bold Alliance, a coalition of state-level groups that have opposed the Keystone XL for nearly a decade.

“That the Nebraska commissioners won’t consider safety in their decision on Keystone XL should alarm everyone,” said Sara Shor, a spokesperson for 350.org, one of the key national opponents of the pipeline. “This spill puts an exclamation point on the need to reject Keystone XL, but it doesn’t tell us anything we didn’t already know about pipelines. They spill, and if Keystone XL is built, we can only expect more of the world’s dirtiest oil spewing across farms, treaty lands, and throughout the Great Plains.”

Kelly Martin, the Beyond Dirty Fuels campaign director at the Sierra Club, added, “We’ve always said it’s not a question of whether a pipeline will spill, but when, and today TransCanada is making our case for us. This is not the first time TransCanada’s pipeline has spilled toxic tar sands, and it won’t be the last.

The PSC must take note: there is no such thing as a safe tar sands pipeline, and the only way to protect Nebraska communities from more tar sands spills is to say no to Keystone XL.”

For those unclear about the difference between the existing Keystone pipeline and Keystone XL, 350.org offered this helpful explainer via Twitter:

Echoing a message shared by the many groups—local, nation, and international—350.org’s Shor says this week’s spill is just the most recent proof that a move away from fossil fuel and towards renewable, less damaging energy energy is urgently needed.

We
need a transition to a renewable energy future that doesn’t pollute
our communities and wreck our climate,” she said. “If the PSC
truly has Nebraska’s interests at heart, they’ll reject Keystone
XL.”

In
newspapers across Nebraska over the weekend, Kleeb’s group is
placing full-page ads against the pipeline and urging people to
attend a
rally
outisde the PSC hearing on Monday
.

Here’s
the ad, which promotes solar power in the state over the new fossil
fuel projects like Keystone XL:

@350

Confused about the difference between  & ? Here’s a helpful map and key facts:

1. Keystone 1 was completed in 2010 and just leaked 210,000 gallons of oil in SD

2. Keystone XL is proposed, but missing a permit in Nebraska that will be decided on Monday

In
30 days, more than 90 of the world’s largest banks will meet in
Brazil to recommit to the Equator Principles, a set of rules guiding
which big infrastructure projects they will and won’t
finance.1

“Equator Banks” have promised
to avoid or minimize the social, environmental and climate impacts of
such projects, and to respect the rights and interests of Indigenous
communities affected by them.2 But they haven’t kept
their word.

  • The
Dakota Access Pipeline was financed by banks signed on to the
Equator Principles even though it was built to pump tar sands, the
dirtiest oil on earth, and was fiercely opposed by the Standing Rock
Sioux and Cheyenne River Lakota Tribes for threatening their water
    sources.3

  • The
Honduran Agua Zarca hydro project, where Indigenous leader Berta
Cáceres was murdered for leading Indigenous resistance to the
    project, also passed the
‘Equator test’ of FMO bank as a project supposedly respecting
the rights of the Lenca communities
    .4

These
are just a couple examples of projects financed by banks under the
Equator Principles that are resisted by Indigenous communities. All
over the world, Equator banks also continue to finance new coal power
plants that will further add to climate disruption.

Sign
here to tell the banks to stop funding climate devastation and
respect Indigenous rights.

The
October 24 meeting in São Paulo, Brazil is a clear opportunity for
Equator Banks to revisit their Principles and commit to a higher
standard of practice. Advocates will be on the ground in Brazil, and
local activists around the world are planning related actions around
the same time to increase the pressure.5

As
a powerful coalition of human rights, environmental and
Indigenous-led organizations, we’re demanding that the big banks
stop financing climate disasters and respect Indigenous peoples’
rights and land.
We
need you to sign on and show these banks that every customer on every
continent sees what they’re up to and demands that they commit to
making changes.

solidarity,

– Coal power plants, coal mines, tar sands exploration and transport,
oil pipelines, fracked gas plants, deepwater oil rigs, oil
exploration in the Arctic, and more have all qualified as
‘responsible’ projects under the Equator Principles, as have
projects that violate international Indigenous rights. From the
Americas to Australia, Indigenous peoples find themselves on the
front line of struggles against fossil fuel extraction and transport
projects, and also large hydro and other infrastructure projects that
threaten their lands and way of life.

Grote banken overtreden eigen duurzaamheidsregels………

Tell
Big Banks: Protect Climate and Indigenous rights!

Did
you know that big banks funded the disastrous Dakota Access Pipeline
(DAPL) under the Equator Principles* — the supposedly premier
guidelines for responsible lending practices?

This
is a problem. Tell the Equator Banks to make a change.

The
Equator Principles didn’t stop banks like Wells Fargo from
financing DAPL. They didn’t stop banks like JPMorgan Chase from
financing the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline.
Despite enormous impacts on our shared climate, and unacceptable
abuses of the rights of Indigenous Peoples, disaster projects like
these have all been financed under the Equator Principles.

Equator
Banks, act! Stop financing climate disasters, and respect Indigenous
Peoples’ rights and territories.

Stop Financing Climate Disasters, Respect Indigenous Peoples’ Rights and Territories

This
October, over ninety of the world’s largest banks will meet in
Brazil to discuss their commitments under the Equator Principles, a
collectively agreed set of rules for financing big infrastructure
projects. These ‘Equator Banks’ have all promised to finance such
projects in a ‘socially responsible manner’ and to avoid negative
impacts on climate change wherever possible.

It
sounds good, but it’s not working.

The
Principles as they are written now are not stopping banks from
financing disaster projects that have a devastating impact on the
climate. Coal power plants, coal mines, tar sands exploration and
transport, oil pipelines, LNG plants, deepwater oil rigs, exploration
projects in the Arctic and more, have all qualified for bank lending
under the Equator Principles.

Nor
are these Principles stopping banks from financing disaster projects
that trample on the rights of Indigenous Peoples, fully recognised in
international law, to reject projects they do not want on their
traditional territories. From the Americas to Australia, Indigenous
Peoples find themselves on the front line of struggles against fossil
fuel extraction and transport projects, but also large hydro and
other infrastructure projects that threaten their lands and
traditional way of life.

The
Dakota Access Pipeline in the United States, fiercely opposed by the
Standing Rock and Cheyenne River Lakota Tribes, and the Agua Zarca
hydro project in Honduras, where Indigenous leader Berta Cáceres was
murdered for leading the Lenca people’s opposition to the project,
are but two examples of projects financed by banks under the Equator
Principles.

What
good are such Principles when they allow these disaster projects to
be built?

We demand that
at their meeting this October, Equator Banks commit to a new set of
Principles that stops the financing of climate disasters and fully
respects Indigenous Peoples’ rights and territories.

Please
read our Call to the Equator Banks below, then sign up by
using the form.

This
October 23-25, 91 banks will meet in São Paulo, Brazil to discuss
their social and environmental commitments under the Equator
Principles.

While
these Principles are to ensure that adopting banks do not finance
projects with a large negative impact on people and planet, Equator
Banks continue to support projects that pose a massive threat to the
world’s climate, such as coal, oil and gas extraction,
transportation and power generation projects. Equator Banks also
continue to finance fossil fuel and other projects that trample on
the rights and interests of Indigenous Peoples.

We
are appalled that the Equator Principles as formulated today allow
Equator Banks to finance projects that are a disaster for the
world’s’ climate and for Indigenous peoples. For the Principles to
be a meaningful sustainability commitment they need to be fully
overhauled.

We
therefore call on the Equator Principles Association to agree in
Brazil to a full revision process for the Principles, so that they
reflect
at
minimum
 two
solid commitments:

1.
Stop Financing Climate Disasters:

  • include
a full commitment to the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global
    temperature rise to below 2 degrees, aiming for 1,5 degrees;

  • include
stringent and binding criteria that all projects to be financed
under the Equator framework be fully aligned with reaching the Paris
Agreement goals; and for this reason:

  • explicitly
exclude all new fossil fuel extraction, transportation and power
projects from financing under the Equator Principles.

2.
Respect Indigenous Peoples’ Rights and Territories:

  • include
an explicit commitment to respect the right of Indigenous Peoples
anywhere in the world to withhold their consent for projects
    situated on territories they traditionally use and occupy;

  • commit
to not financing projects, neither directly or indirectly, that did
    not obtain such consent;

  • strengthen
due diligence and consultation processes to ensure that Indigenous
    Peoples’ rights are fully respected;

  • ensure
that Indigenous Peoples and other project-affected communities have
full access to grievance channels with project sponsors and
financing banks when their rights and interests are violated.

In
Brazil, Equator Banks face a choice between deepening their
collective commitment to effectively stop financing climate change
and respect Indigenous Peoples’ rights, or see the Equator
initiative become irrelevant for meeting the pressing social and
environmental challenges the world faces today. We expect that the
Equator Banks will act decisively on this call.

Men verwacht windsnelheden tot 285 km/u. of zelfs hoger……..

Climate
Breakdown Is Happening Before Our Eyes

Climate
breakdown
,
as George Monbiot calls it, is happening before our eyes at the
same time the science on climate change grows stronger and has wider
acceptance. Hurricane Harvey, which struck at the center of the
petroleum industry – the heart of climate denialism – provided a
glimpse of the new normal of climate crisis-induced events. In Asia,
this week the
climate
message was even stronger
 where
at least 1,200 people died and 41 million were impacted. By 2050,
one
billion people could be displaced
 by
climate crises.

Climate
disasters demonstrate the immense failure of government at all
levels. The world has known about the likely disastrous impacts of
climate change for decades. Next year will be the
thirtieth anniversary of
the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
 (IPCC),
which  operates under the auspices of the United Nations and was
founded in 1988. The IPCC published the first of five reports in
1990. Thousands of scientists and other experts write and review the
reports and 120 countries participate in the process. The most common
surprises in successive reports are
more
rapid temperature increases
 and greater
impacts
 than
scientists had predicted.

Climate Science is real protest

We
Can No Longer Ignore the Science and the Evidence Before Us

The
science on climate change has become extremely strong as the
final
draft of the U.S. Global Change Research Program’s Climate Science
Special Report
 showed. The document
was leaked
 last
month because scientists feared the Trump administration would amend,
suppress or destroy it. The report describes overwhelming evidence of
man-made climate change impacting us right now and the urgent
need to get to zero net carbon emissions.

It
is not just science that confirms the climate crisis, it is also
people’s experience with
extreme
weather
constant record
breaking
 temperatures,
and
deadly
heat waves
 as
well as
collapsing
mountains in Alaska
,
the
shrinking
Colorado River
 and
an
ice
free Arctic
 as
a few examples. People have experienced a series of extreme
storms – Hurricanes Harvey, Katrina and Sandy being the most
notable this century –droughts, fires and other physical evidence
that make it hard to deny climate catastrophe. Climate denialism
requires shutting one’s eyes to obvious realities when the
truth is the
Earth
is warmer than it has been in 120,000 years
.

There
is no doubt that these storms are made
more
deadly by climate change
.
Harvey was a tropical storm until it went over the warm Gulf of
Mexico and grew into a hurricane with record rainfall. Climate
expert
Michael
Mann explains
 that
warmer water resulted in greater moisture being absorbed, more rain
and more flooding. Sea level rise added to the greater flooding. The
stalling of the storm over Houston was also predicted by climate
forecasters because the jet stream pattern has changed. Climate
change had the same effects on Hurricane Sandy in New York City.

Science
is denied because many profit from the dirty energy status quo and
denying or even hiding the existence of climate change. There
is
litigation
against oil and gas companies
 and an
SEC investgation
 because
records show they knew their products were causing climate change
going back to the 70s but funded research to hide reality.
 ExxonMobil is being

There
are many climate criminals to point to with the dirty energy

responsible.

Historic
Failure of Government

The
three decade life of the IPCC has coincided with deep corruption of
government by the energy industry, sprawl developers and other dirty
energy profiteers. The anti-science movement in the United States,
which includes government officials, industry and others who deny
climate change exists, provides cover for elected officials to do
nothing or act inadequately on the urgent reality of climate chaos so
that corporations continue to threaten the planet.

The
United States elected a climate denier, Donald Trump, who describes
climate change as a hoax and has
appointed
officials
 who
are complicit in denying climate change, closely tied to polluting
industries and favor policies that result in climate breakdown, and
many of whom were part of
the
misinformation network on climate
.
Trump has
withdrawn
from the Paris
 climate
agreement, putting the
US
out of step with the world
 on
the issue. The Trump administration has
sought
to hide
 evidence
of climate change, but
people
have been sharing climate documents
 with
other governments and scientific groups before he hid them. Thirteen
cities joined together to
publish
Trump-deleted climate data
.

Trump
has conducted a
witch
hunt against believers
 in
climate change. These actions have resulted in the unusual step
of
climate
scientists protesting
 the
Trump administration.

But,
even presidents who recognize climate change reality have not
taken action to confront it.  Unlike Trump,
President
Obama
 played
a more
hidden
hand
 in
his undermining of climate policy. His energy strategy favored “
all
of the above

energy including oil and gas and his office approved carbon
infrastructure and
off-shore
drilling
.
Obama showed
dirty
energy extraction is a bi-partisan concern
,
as Alison Rose Levy clearly reminds us. Obama
undermined
the 2009 Copenhagen
 climate
accord and weakened the
Paris
agreement
.
He was preceded by the marinated in oil Bush-Cheney administration.
Those two administrations wasted 16 years of critical time to respond
to climate change.

Federal
decisions had local impacts as can be seen in Houston, the fourth
largest city. The
federal
government inadequately
 regulated
superfund sites, pollution from oil refineries and chemical plants in
the area. These were all part of “Cancer Alley” or the “Chemical
Coast” – names used to describe the petrochemical capital of the
United States. When flooding came, so did disaster in these areas. A

1.5
mile radius around one chemical plant had to be evacuated
 and toxic
waste sites flooded
.  Of
course, the environmental racism that led to these dangerous
polluters being put in poor neighborhoods, usually communities of
color, is now resulting in massive pollution in those areas and will
cause health problems.

But
inadequate response to climate change often includes state and
local governments (some states and cities are taking positive
steps). Texas is an example of decades of failed government as it has
taken no action to adapt to climate change over the last three
decades.
Bills
were introduced
 to
do so but the legislature failed to act. Why? Because the laws
included the words “climate change,” e.g. calling for a “climate
change vulnerability assessment” and were perceived as a threat to
the oil and gas industry.

The
metropolitan area of Houston contains 6.5 million people over urban
sprawl the size of New Jersey.
Zoning
regulations allowed
 for
unregulated growth, even in areas prone to flooding, creating a large
population on a flood plain. The area has had a long relationship
with the petrochemical industry which has been able to get its way,
but being business friendly to the industry is going to become very
costly. The city is sinking at 2.2 inches a year in large part
because of oil and water being pumped from under it.

The
failure to act on climate for the last three decades also means that
government will spend more as each crisis has multi-hundred million
or even multi-billion dollar costs. In addition, people today
are
leaving
a bill of hundreds of trillions of dollars
 to
future generations. It would be much less expensive if government
acted responsibly and put in place infrastructure and technology to
adapt to climate change as well as to ameliorate it now. The disaster
in Houston is an opportunity to make those changes.

The
historic failure of government action on climate change shows a fatal
flaw in a representative democracy that is based on the
corruption of big business money and serves the corporate
interests who profit from the flawed status quo.

Climate change is big the movement needs to be bigger

People
Rise to the Challenge

Throughout
much of this history, particularly in the 21st Century,
people have been challenging the dominance of the oil, gas and coal
industries and pushing government to confront climate change.

Even
before Trump came into office, there were massive protests during the
Obama administration against the TransCanada Keystone XL pipeline,
the Dakota Access Pipeline and other carbon infrastructure throughout
the country.
People
protested the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission
 (FERC),
which is an arm of the oil and gas industry disguised as a federal
agency. Obama’s FERC commissioners were a rubber stamp for the
industry, now, Trump’s FERC continues the practice.

People
were escalating actions during the Obama era saying
the
time for direct action on climate change is now
.
Protests were on an upswing before Trump was elected. Last September,
Bill McKibben
recalculated
the climate math
 showing
how time was running out.

From
the first day of the Trump administration people were taking
action.
Climate
activists blockaded Trump’s inauguration
 making
it more difficult for people to attend. In addition to protests
against specific carbon energy products, people mobilized
for
#DayAgainstDenial
Protests across U.S. to call attention to climate change
.

People
pushed businesses and local governments to pledge to reduce carbon
emissions resulting in
over
1,400 U.S. cities, states and businesses vowing to meet Paris climate
commitments
.
 Last week,
nine
eastern states jointly agreed
 to
reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent more than their
previous target.

There
is widespread
climate
change action, which is ‘unstoppable’ despite Trump’s
policies
. In
fact, Trump’s presidency may be leading to an escalation in
movement action as people know
we
can no longer hope to win by simply voting or speaking out
.
People are showing they are
willing
to risk going to jail
 for
a livable future. And, we have begun to see cases where
juries
are not willing to convict people for climate change protests.

Climate
change affects each of us and is an issue that unites us. When crisis
hits, we need to act as a community in mutual aid of each other.
Those cmmunity relationships can be built now so we are ready
in times of crisis.

The
only way we can mitigate and adapt to climate breakdown is by working
together toward the common goals of reducing our carbon footprint,
moving to a net zero carbon energy economy as soon as possible and
putting in place the infrastructure needed to adapt to the climate
crisis.

Popular Resistance

==============================

Charlottesville: Trump haalt antifascisten toch onderuit………

Charlottesville:
What You Wish Upon Others, You Wish Upon Yourself

August
14, 2017 “Information
Clearing House
” – U.S. “liberals” cuddle fascists
and right-wing religious extremists in Libya, Syria, Ukraine,
Venezuela and elsewhere.

But
when similar movements appear on their own streets they are outraged.

The
person
in the
center on the above picture drove his car into a crowd of
counter-protesters in Charlottesville killing one and wounding
several.

Politicians
and media hail such persons when they appear, often hired by the CIA,
to overthrow the government of some foreign country. They condemn the
same mindset and actions at home. But
glorification of
right-wing violence elsewhere hands justification to right-wing
groups at home.

Senator McCain, The New York Times, the Washington Post and many
“liberals” supported the above nazis.

in Charlottesville,
August 11 2017. Former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton,
Republican Senator McCain, the New York Times, the Washington Post

You
can not have only one of these.

To
claim, as “liberals” do now, that such marches as in
Charlottesville, “is not what and who we are”, is a lie.
Ask people from outside the U.S. how the empire appears and acts
towards them.

The
U.S. uses fascism, religious extremism, torture, targeted killing and
many other vile instruments of power in its quest for global
dominance. All of these methods and ideologies, all of them, will one
day come home.

Reporters:
Do your job and go to jail

The
new press censorship in the US

Real
reporters can’t get their work on mainstream news.

So
they create their own channels on the Internet.

Corporate
America has found a new way to shut them down: Work with crooked
cops, judges and prosecutors to arrest them.

By
