Hoewel we verder

Not
another corporate cabinet!?

Robert
Cruickshank, Demandprogress.org <info@demandprogress.org>

The presidential race has just been
called, and already, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has vowed
to block Joe Biden’s cabinet nominations unless they are to
McConnell’s liking.1

And Biden himself is already
considering cabinet members who are reminiscent of Trump’s swamp—a
former CEO of Ebay, corporate lobbyists, and two former GOP governors
known for their corporatism.2

We can’t afford four more
years of a cabinet that only serves corporatism. Demand Progress is
organizing a grassroots coalition to fight for a Biden administration
who will push back against corporate power. Will you donate?

Yes,
I’ll donate to help stop Biden from ushering in another corporate
cabinet.

After Donald Trump promised to
“drain the swamp” during the 2016 campaign, he nominated a
cabinet full of billionaires and corporate cronies who undid decades
of progress.

  • Interior
Secretary Ryan Zinke was a former business developer who pushed
through a rollback of national monument protections for hundreds of
    thousands of acres of land.

  • Treasury
Secretary Steve Mnuchin was a hedge fund manager who took billions
in COVID-19 money and spread it among rich corporations.

  • Health
and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar was a former Big Pharma
lobbyist who spent his tenure fighting against the Affordable Care
    Act.

  • Education Secretary Betsy
DeVos is a billionaire who invests in private and religious schools,
and she funneled federal dollars into those efforts while in office.

We cannot have another four years
of cabinet members who only serve the interests of gigantic
corporations.

McConnell is acting as if Biden has
no choice but to nominate Republican-approved cabinet members, but
that’s just not the case. Trump himself used the Vacancies Act to
fill positions on a temporary basis while confirmations were delayed,
and Biden can do so as well.3 There are numerous other
tools at Biden’s disposal to circumvent McConnell.

But first, Biden has to show that
he’s on the side of the people by choosing cabinet members who will
stand up to Big Business.
We’re
going to start right now showing Biden that we demand a government
for the people.

Will
you donate to help stop Biden from nominating lobbyists and
corporatists to his cabinet?

Thanks for standing with us.

Post-shift
hygiene by hospital workers…

There is none

More unreported clues to CoVid-19
transmission.

I have suggested that hospitals
themselves are a major if not the major source of the spread of
CoVid-19 infections. (See previous pages on this subject.)

If that’s true, what would be the
mechanism?

I asked a logical question and got
a frightening answer:

What about post-shift hygiene by
hospital workers before they hit the streets, stores, and go home.

There is none.

Don’t take my word for it.

What follows is Standard Operating
Procedure for hospital workers in their own words and one colleague
just told me he saw a worker in scrubs shopping today (March 27,
2020) in Los Angeles.

… AND they’re trying to keep people from voting! (of course)

People for the American Way

I had to add an
important addendum to the list I emailed earlier of ways the Right is
trying to exploit this crisis to push their agenda and for their own
political benefit.

As Aaron Black at the
Washington Post pointed out today, Republicans are also enjoying that
this crisis could cause problems for ballot access this year, and
they’re
trying to thwart efforts to make it possible for people to vote!

Trump himself was clear that the motive is the same as the one that’s
always behind the Right’s voter suppression efforts:

In
an interview on “Fox & Friends,” Trump referenced proposals
from Democrats in the coronavirus stimulus negotiations that would
have vastly increased funding for absentee and vote-by-mail options.
The final package included $400 million for the effort, which was far
less than what Democrats had sought.

The
things they had in there were crazy,” Trump said. “They had
things — levels of voting that, if you ever agreed to it, you’d
never have a Republican elected in this country again.”

We have just $2,115 to
go before midnight! Help put us over the top RIGHT NOW:

Please
chip in to STOP Trump Republicans’ shocking exploitation of this
crisis and defeat them at the polls!>>

—-[previous
message]—-

We’re watching the
Right Wing very closely – as we always do, with PFAW’s Right Wing
Watch – and the trends we’re seeing from the Trump administration
and its Republican allies amidst this global health crisis are beyond
disturbing.

Conspiracy theories
and dangerous disinformation from the Right have exploded, which,
unfortunately, is not unexpected.
But
what’s arguably just as dangerous – especially over the long term
– is the naked opportunism we’re seeing from right-wing
officials, from Trump all the way on down.

  • Republican state
officials are trying to use the pandemic as an excuse to shut down
    access to abortion…

  • Secretary of
Education Betsy DeVos is exploiting the crisis to push education
privatization schemes in the form of more school vouchers that would
    take money from public schools…

  • Trump has
announced a freeze on the enforcement of all federal environmental
regulations and protections, including rolling back the fuel
emissions standards that have been the centerpiece of the U.S.
effort to combat climate change …

And the list continues
to grow…

If they are able to
get away with these infringements on the rights and interests of the
public, does anyone really think they’ll reinstate the protections
they’re now trying to deny without a fight?

We need to
fight back to stop the erosion of our liberties during this crisis
and continue our push to hold Trump Republicans accountable by
defeating them up and down the ballot.

Are you with
us? If so, then we need you to help us finish the first quarter of
2020 strong with a critically urgent donation before tonight’s
deadline.

Please
renew for 2020 with your most generous donation so we can put your
support to work right away>>

We’re
$17,008 short of our budget with just hours to go and we’re
depending on our best supporters to step up today.

In these uncertain
times, falling behind now could doom our work for the rest of the
year and we can’t afford to miss a beat – if we fall short, Trump
and the Far Right win. It’s that simple.

And there is so. Much.
Work. To. Do.

All of the
exploitation of this crisis by the Right that we’re seeing so far
is bound to get worse, so we need your help to keep sounding the
alarm.

And, of course, the
Trump administration – mostly through the Treasury Department,
headed by Trump lackey Steve Mnuchin – will be in charge of
dispersing the half a trillion dollars to corporations that Congress
just authorized with its coronavirus relief legislation … so we
need to be extra vigilant in making sure the Trump administration
doesn’t use that money for corrupt corporate kickbacks and
shameless self-enrichment.

Even though
the nature of our field operations have changed, the campaigns all
continue … we’re still influencing media narratives, planning
ads, and employing the latest digital organizing tools to continue to
counter the Right and have a massive impact in this year’s
elections.

Today is our
biggest deadline of the year so far and we’re pleading with you to
stand with us during this challenging time. We’ve never needed your
steadfast support more than we do right now.

Please
donate whatever you can immediately so we can continue the fight to
our democracy>>

Thank you so much for
your support and everything you do.

Stay safe,

Michael Keegan,
President

Lees

Megaphone to Sell War

(CD— Amid reports that
President Donald Trump is “
showing
renewed interest

in Blackwater founder Erik Prince’s plan to hand the war in
Afghanistan over to a private army led by an “
American
viceroy,
” MSNBC on
Friday happily gave the notorious war profiteer a cushy platform to
make his
nonsensical
and dangerous
 pitch
to the president almost entirely unchallenged.

Shame
on
MSNBC for
giving Erik Prince a megaphone,” Stephen Miles, director of Win
Without War,
wrote on
Twitter following Prince’s interview with
MSNBC‘s
Andrea Mitchell. “He belongs in The Hague, not spewing his
warmongering for profit filth on television.”

Highlighting
the failure of both the deadly “conventional” approach the U.S.
has taken in Afghanistan over the past 16 years and Prince’s plan
to continue the war for profit, Miles went on to suggest an option
that—for obvious reasons—Mitchell and Prince both ignored, one
that is
virtually
never aired on corporate media networks like
MSNBC
.

What
if—hear me out—instead of privatizing the war in #Afghanistan, we

wrote.
“Crazy, I know.”

during which the infamous mercenary was asked for his thoughts

“:

Prince’s
appearance on
MSNBC came
shortly after
NBC
News
 reported
that Trump is growing increasingly impatient with
his
own administration’s strategy
 and
looking toward Prince—the brother of billionaire Education
Secretary Betsy DeVos—for possible alternatives.

When
Prince’s plan had Trump’s attention in 2017, it had the backing
of his former strategist Steve Bannon and the president’s
son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner,”
NBC reported.

In
recent meetings, Trump “has pressed his advisers about Afghanistan
progress” and expressed interest in Prince’s plan to privatize
the war,
NBC noted,
citing anonymous administration officials.

As
usually happens when Prince makes his periodic appearances on
corporate news shows to tout his opportunistic, for-profit war plan,
critics were quick to highlight his
horrendous
track-record
 and
argue that his plan to privatize the war in Afghanistan would lead to
even less oversight and more bloodshed.

Rep. Ro Khanna

@RepRoKhanna

As head of Blackwater, Erik Prince’s mercenaries committed multiple war crimes in Iraq and were convicted for their involvement in the Nissour Square massacre that killed 17 civilians. He deserves an investigation, not contracts to wage a private war in Afghanistan.

Ach ja, wiens brood men eet……….

The
Elites Won’t Save Us

By
Chris Hedges

February
13, 2017 “
Information
Clearing House

– “Truth
Dig
” – The four-decade-long assault on our democratic
institutions by corporations has left them weak and largely
dysfunctional. These institutions, which surrendered their efficacy
and credibility to serve corporate interests, should have been our
firewall. Instead, they are tottering under the onslaught.

Labor
unions are a spent force. The press is corporatized and distrusted.
Universities have been purged of dissidents and independent scholars
who criticize neoliberalism and
decry the decay of democratic institutions and political parties.
Public broadcasting and the arts have been defunded and left on life
support. The courts have been stacked with judges whose legal careers
were spent serving corporate power, a trend in appointments that
continued under Barack Obama. Money has replaced the vote, which is
how someone as unqualified as Betsy DeVos can buy herself a Cabinet
seat. And the Democratic Party, rather than sever its ties to Wall
Street and corporations, is naively waiting in the wings to profit
from a Trump debacle.

The
biggest asset Trump has is the decadent, clueless, narcissistic,
corporate-indentured, war-mongering Democratic Party,” Ralph
Nader
said when I reached him by phone in Washington. “If
the Democratic strategy is waiting for Godot, waiting for Trump to
implode, we are in trouble. And just about everything you say about
the Democrats you can say about the AFL-CIO.
They don’t control the train.”

The
loss of credibility by democratic institutions has thrust the country
into an existential as well as economic crisis. The courts,
universities and press are no longer trusted by tens of millions of
Americans who correctly see them as organs of the corporate elites.
These institutions are traditionally the mechanisms by which a
society is able to unmask the lies of the powerful, critique ruling
ideologies and promote justice. Because Americans have been bitterly
betrayed by their institutions, the Trump regime can attack the press
as the “
opposition
party
,” threaten to cut off university
funding
, taunt a federal jurist as a “so-called
judge
” and denounce
a court order
 as “outrageous.”

The
decay of democratic institutions is the prerequisite for the rise of
authoritarian or fascist regimes. This decay has given credibility to
a pathological liar. The Trump administration, according to an
Emerson College poll, is considered by 49 percent of registered
voters to be truthful while the media are considered truthful by only
39 percent of registered voters. Once American democratic
institutions no longer function, reality becomes whatever absurdity
the White House issues.

Most
of the rules of democracy are unwritten. These rules determine public
comportment and ensure respect for democratic norms, procedures and
institutions. President Trump has, to the delight of his supporters,
rejected this political and cultural etiquette.

Hannah
Arendt
in “The Origins of Totalitarianism” noted that
when democratic institutions collapse it is “easier to accept
patently absurd propositions than the old truths which have become
pious banalities.” The chatter of the liberal ruling elites about
our democracy is itself an absurdity. “Vulgarity with its cynical
dismissal of respected standards and accepted theories,” she wrote,
infects political discourse. This vulgarity is “mistaken for
courage and a new style of life.”

He
is destroying one code of behavior after another,” Nader said of
Trump. “He is so far getting away with it and not paying a price.
He is breaking standards of behavior—what he says about women,
commercializing the White House, I am the law.”

Nader
said he does not think the Republican Party will turn against Trump
or consider impeachment unless his presidency appears to threaten its
chances of retaining power in the 2018 elections. Nader sees the
Democratic Party as too “decadent and incompetent” to mount a
serious challenge to Trump. Hope, he said, comes from the numerous
protests that have been mounted in
the streets
at
town halls
held by members of Congress and at flash points
such as Standing
Rock
. It may also come from the 2.5 million civil servants within
the federal government if a significant number refuse to cooperate
with Trump’s authoritarianism.

The
new president is clearly aware of the power wielded by civil
servants, who swear an oath of allegiance to the U.S. Constitution,
not to any president or administration,” Maria J. Stephan, the
co-author of “Why Civil Resistance Works,” writes
in The Washington Post
. (WaPo) “One of Trump’s first acts as
president was a sweeping federal hiring freeze affecting all new and
existing positions except those related to the military, national
security and public safety. Even before Trump’s inauguration, the
Republican-controlled House of Representatives reinstated an obscure
1876 rule that would allow Congress to slash the salaries of
individual federal workers. This was a clear warning to those serving
in government to keep their heads down. Trump’s high-profile firing
of acting attorney general Sally Yates, who refused to follow the
president’s immigration ban, sent shock waves through the
bureaucracy.”

A
sustained, nationwide popular uprising of nonviolent obstruction and
noncooperation is the only weapon left to save the republic. The
elites will respond once they become afraid. If we do not make them
afraid we will fail.

The
four-decade-long assault on our democratic institutions by
corporations has left them weak and largely dysfunctional. These
institutions, which surrendered their efficacy and credibility to
serve corporate interests, should have been our firewall. Instead,
they are tottering under the onslaught.

Labor
unions are a spent force.

Stephan, the
co-author of “Why Civil Resistance Works,” writes
in The Washington Post
. “One of Trump’s first acts as
president was a sweeping federal hiring freeze affecting all new and
existing positions except those related to the military, national
security and public safety. Even before Trump’s inauguration, the
Republican-controlled House of Representatives reinstated an obscure
1876 rule that would allow Congress to slash the salaries of
individual federal workers. This was a clear warning to those serving
in government to keep their heads down. Trump’s high-profile firing
of acting attorney general Sally Yates, who refused to follow the
president’s immigration ban, sent shock waves through the
bureaucracy.”

A
sustained, nationwide popular uprising of nonviolent obstruction and
noncooperation is the only weapon left to save the republic. The
elites will respond once they become afraid. If we do not make them
afraid we will fail.
