Hopes of Peace with Russia Could Be Crushed by Trump’s New National Security Advisor
(RPI)** President Trump has selected Gen. H.R. McMaster to be his National Security Advisor, replacing the short-lived Gen. Michael Flynn. Those breathing a sigh of relief that the rumored favorite John Bolton didn’t get the nod may want to hold that thought — and their breath. McMaster is not the man to guide President Trump toward better relations with Russia and less US interference in the internal affairs of others.
In fact, he believes the opposite.
In a speech*** delivered at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) just last May, Gen. McMaster blamed the lack of sufficient US military presence overseas for what he calls a more aggressive Russian geostrategic posturing.
Said the General:
“Even though it may have been apparent, at least since 2008, that Russia was changing its geostrategic behavior and engaging in…probing, probing at the far reaches of American power, our strategic response was to accelerate our withdrawal of…army forces from Europe. And what we’re seeing now is we’ve awakened to obviously this threat from Russia who is waging limited war for limited objectives. Annexing Crimea. Invading Ukraine. At zero cost. And consolidating gains over that territory, and portraying the reaction by us and partners as escalatory. … What is required is forward deterrence. To be able to ratchet up the cost at the frontier.”
The General also made the completely fallacious assertion that Russia invaded Georgia in 2008. Even the highly critical if not overtly anti-Russia European Union concluded that Georgia was to blame for launching an ill-advised attack on Russian peacekeeping forces that were part of an international mission in South Ossetia.
Does this sound like someone who is going to work to help President Trump improve relations with Russia?
No wonder neocons Max Boot and Sen. John McCain are absolutely thrilled with Trump’s choice of McMaster to be National Security Advisor.
Sen. McCain, who just returned from attacking President Trump at the Munich Security Conference for not being harder on Russia, said today that McMaster:
“…knows how to succeed. I give President Trump great credit for this decision, as well as his national security cabinet choices. I could not imagine a better, more capable national security team than the one we have right now.”
Max Boot had a similar reaction:
“H.R. McMaster is one of the most impressive army officers of his generation—a rare combination of soldier and scholar.”
McMaster’s claim to fame was the 1997 Dereliction of Duty, which is billed as a brave attack on the mistake of the Vietnam war, but was in fact largely focused on the failure to devote enough resources to actually winning the war — a typical neocon critique of failed military interventions.
Is McMaster a worse choice than John Bolton? Perhaps. Whereas Bolton would have been under the microscope, McMaster may just be able, due to his military history, be able to avoid close scrutiny.
Whatever the case, McMaster is all about conflict with Russia. Will his boss keep him in check?
Ach ja, wiens brood men eet……….

The
Elites Won’t Save Us

February

Clearing House”
– “Truth
Dig” – The four-decade-long assault on our democratic
institutions by corporations has left them weak and largely
dysfunctional. These institutions, which surrendered their efficacy
and credibility to serve corporate interests, should have been our
firewall. Instead, they are tottering under the onslaught.
Labor
unions are a spent force. The press is corporatized and distrusted.
Universities have been purged of dissidents and independent scholars
who criticize neoliberalism and
decry the decay of democratic institutions and political parties.
Public broadcasting and the arts have been defunded and left on life
support. The courts have been stacked with judges whose legal careers
were spent serving corporate power, a trend in appointments that
continued under Barack Obama. Money has replaced the vote, which is
how someone as unqualified as Betsy DeVos can buy herself a Cabinet
seat. And the Democratic Party, rather than sever its ties to Wall
Street and corporations, is naively waiting in the wings to profit
from a Trump debacle.
“The
biggest asset Trump has is the decadent, clueless, narcissistic,
corporate-indentured, war-mongering Democratic Party,” Ralph
Nader said when I reached him by phone in Washington. “If
the Democratic strategy is waiting for Godot, waiting for Trump to
implode, we are in trouble. And just about everything you say about
the Democrats you can say about the AFL-CIO.
They don’t control the train.”
The
loss of credibility by democratic institutions has thrust the country
into an existential as well as economic crisis. The courts,
universities and press are no longer trusted by tens of millions of
Americans who correctly see them as organs of the corporate elites.
These institutions are traditionally the mechanisms by which a
society is able to unmask the lies of the powerful, critique ruling
ideologies and promote justice. Because Americans have been bitterly
betrayed by their institutions, the Trump regime can attack the press
as the “opposition
party,” threaten to cut off university
funding, taunt a federal jurist as a “so-called
judge” and denounce
a court order as “outrageous.”
The
decay of democratic institutions is the prerequisite for the rise of
authoritarian or fascist regimes. This decay has given credibility to
a pathological liar. The Trump administration, according to an
Emerson College poll, is considered by 49 percent of registered
voters to be truthful while the media are considered truthful by only
39 percent of registered voters. Once American democratic
institutions no longer function, reality becomes whatever absurdity
the White House issues.
Most
of the rules of democracy are unwritten. These rules determine public
comportment and ensure respect for democratic norms, procedures and
institutions. President Trump has, to the delight of his supporters,
rejected this political and cultural etiquette.
Hannah
Arendt in “The Origins of Totalitarianism” noted that
when democratic institutions collapse it is “easier to accept
patently absurd propositions than the old truths which have become
pious banalities.” The chatter of the liberal ruling elites about
our democracy is itself an absurdity. “Vulgarity with its cynical
dismissal of respected standards and accepted theories,” she wrote,
infects political discourse. This vulgarity is “mistaken for
courage and a new style of life.”
“He
is destroying one code of behavior after another,” Nader said of
Trump. “He is so far getting away with it and not paying a price.
He is breaking standards of behavior—what he says about women,
commercializing the White House, I am the law.”
Nader
said he does not think the Republican Party will turn against Trump
or consider impeachment unless his presidency appears to threaten its
chances of retaining power in the 2018 elections. Nader sees the
Democratic Party as too “decadent and incompetent” to mount a
serious challenge to Trump. Hope, he said, comes from the numerous
protests that have been mounted in
the streets, at
town halls held by members of Congress and at flash points
such as Standing
Rock. It may also come from the 2.5 million civil servants within
the federal government if a significant number refuse to cooperate
with Trump’s authoritarianism.
“The
new president is clearly aware of the power wielded by civil
servants, who swear an oath of allegiance to the U.S. Constitution,
not to any president or administration,” Maria J. Stephan, the
co-author of “Why Civil Resistance Works,” writes
in The Washington Post. (WaPo) “One of Trump’s first acts as
president was a sweeping federal hiring freeze affecting all new and
existing positions except those related to the military, national
security and public safety. Even before Trump’s inauguration, the
Republican-controlled House of Representatives reinstated an obscure
1876 rule that would allow Congress to slash the salaries of
individual federal workers. This was a clear warning to those serving
in government to keep their heads down. Trump’s high-profile firing
of acting attorney general Sally Yates, who refused to follow the
president’s immigration ban, sent shock waves through the
bureaucracy.”
A
sustained, nationwide popular uprising of nonviolent obstruction and
noncooperation is the only weapon left to save the republic. The
elites will respond once they become afraid. If we do not make them
afraid we will fail.

The Canary bracht gisteren een artikel met de titel ‘Three things Theresa May has forced on Britain that make her scarier than Donald Trump’.
Three
things Theresa May has forced on Britain that make her scarier than
Donald Trump [EDITORIAL]
The
increasingly belligerent and authoritarian actions of the Trump White
House are (rightly) spreading concern across the world. But if
we want to know where the wannabe dictator is looking for tips, look
no further than 10 Downing Street. Theresa May – as Home Secretary
and Prime Minister – has pushed Britain way further down the road
to authoritarianism than Trump has yet succeeded in doing in the
US.
The
Investigatory Powers Act
The
above act received Royal
Assent on 29 November 2016. And it made Britain the most
advanced surveillance state in the democratic world.
It gives the
government unrestricted access to everyone’s personal information
and internet browsing history.
Internet
Service Providers must now store details of everything you do online
for a year, and make it available to dozens of public agencies. This
gives authorities unprecedented access to our online lives: our
interests, our networks of friends, family and colleagues, our sexual
interests, our religious and political views, our medical history,
right down to the basic pattern of our daily life.
And
as a recent Amnesty International report
[pdf, p35] points
out, the government ignored most criticisms and recommendations made
about the bill:
Despite
the sweeping powers in the Investigatory Powers Act that threaten to
violate the human rights of people inside and outside the UK, the
bill was pushed through parliament by the government, which ignored
criticism from parliamentary committees, the telecommunications
industry and civil society, including the UN’s privacy chief, who
had warned that the bill violated the right to privacy and ran
contrary to recent Europe Court of Human Rights jurisprudence.
This
leaves the government and its agencies with the power to surveil
almost everything citizens do online. And all without the need for a
warrant or cause for suspicion. As NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden
put it:
Donald
Trump’s border wall with Mexico remains, at least for now, a flight
of Trumpian fancy. But Theresa May has already built her Great Wall
of Calais to keep refugees out of Britain. In fact, how the fiasco
has remained so quiet is a testament to the blunt-toothed
non-response of much of the UK press.
The wall is
a four-metre-high, 1km-long concrete barrier – built to separate
the ‘Calais Jungle’ refugee camp from passing freight lorries. It
was designed to prevent desperate refugees making their way to
Britain by leaping onto passing traffic. Britain funded the wall, at
a cost of £2.3m to
the taxpayer. The wall was completed last December, two
months after authorities
had driven refugees out of the camp and burned it to the ground.
As
Matt Broomfield writes in
a searing comment piece for The
Independent:
A
multi-million wall built to separate the Calais Jungle from
passing trucks has finally been completed, two months after the camp
was bulldozed and its thousands of refugee residents scattered around
France.
The
British-funded wall cost £2.3m. That’s more
expensive than the modern, wood-shelter camp which houses 2,500
refugees in nearby Dunkirk, or enough to house and support nearly 300
Syrian refugees in Britain for a year.
Theresa
May and the racist vans
But
it was as Home Secretary that Theresa May’s populist attacks on
migrants and refugees hit a peak in 2013. May dispatched a fleet
of ‘racist vans’ to the streets. The vans, pictured above,
told immigrants to ‘go home or face arrest’, and provided
numbers for suspicious citizens to dob in suspected
immigrants/refugees.
After
mass uproar at the Orwellian sight of vans trawling British
streets, May was forced to apologise.
But
she was undeterred. Later that same year, she sent officers
from the UK Border Agency to several transport hubs in the
South East, in an attempt to perform an anti-immigrant sweep.
Non-white commuters, mostly UK citizens, were seized by officials
demanding proof of citizenship.
Image
of UK Border Agency officers in Kensal Station, via Phil
O’Shea
The
following account was reported to The Kilburn
Times:
according
to several witnesses the officers were aggressive, intimidating and
were specifically targeting non-white individuals.
Kensal
Rise resident Phil O’Shea told the Times he was threatened with
arrest when he asked what was going on.
He
said:
‘I
thought the behaviour of the immigration officers was heavy-handed
and frightening. They appeared to be stopping and questioning every
non-white person, many of whom were clearly ordinary Kensal Green
residents going to work.’
‘When
I queried what was going on I was threatened with arrest for
obstruction and was told to ‘crack on’.’
‘I
asked that officer for his name but he refused to give it and said I
could read his number on his shoulder but I couldn’t see a number
there.’
Donald
Trump and Theresa May are two peas in a pod
Anyone
hoping for May to provide pro-democratic counsel to Trump has missed
the rising authoritarianism on our own shores. May’s recent fawning
visit to the US was not solely about hopes of a post-Brexit
trade deal. The pair are also like two peas in a pod.
In
delivery and in matters of personal conduct, the two are juxtaposed.
But they share something far more important: a strong
authoritarian streak, an inability to compromise and work within a
team, and a hostility to progressive values.
If
you want to know what Donald Trump is going to do next, just look at
Britain. Because Theresa May already did it. And without a fraction
of the opposition Trump is facing.
That
should be a matter of concern for us all.

Has
The American Establishment Opted for Thermo-Nuclear War?
By
Paul Craig Roberts
February
08, 2017 “Information
Clearing House”
– If you want to be an American TV talking head or a Western
presstitute, you are required to be braindead and
integrity-challenged like Bill O’Reilly, CNN, MSNBC, and the New
York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and all the rest.
In
an interview with President Donald Trump, O’Reilly said: “Putin
is a killer.”
O’Reilly
is indifferent to the fact that thermo-nuclear war is a killer of
planet Earth. For O’Reilly, President Trump’s desire to normalize
relations with Russia is an indication that the President of the US
is comfortable making deals with killers, as if America’s last
three presidents have not been mass killers comfortable with their
destruction in whole or part of many countries and millions of
peoples.
President
Trump’s response to O’Reilly’s was: “We’ve got a lot of
killers. What do you think – our country’s so innocent?”
The
only thing wrong with President Trump’s response is that it
implicitly accepts that Putin is no different from Obama, George W.
Bush, and Bill Clinton. Yet there is no evidence that Putin is a
“killer.” This accusation is an assertion from those who prosper
from having a “Russian threat” to keep the money and power
flowing to themselves.
President
Trump’s statement of an obvious fact was quickly branded “defense
of a killer” by congressional Republicans, Hillary Democrats, the
liberal, progressive, left-wing, and the Western presstitutes.
Even
online sites, such as politico.com, jumped in to criticize “Donald
Trump’s defense of Vladimir Putin’s homicidal history.”
Allegations of “Putin’s homicidal history” are astonishing
after 24 years of Washington’s genocide against Muslins in
Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Yemen, Pakistan, and Syria, and
non-Muslims in Yugoslavia and the Russian regions of Ukraine.
Washington ranks as one of the worst mass murderers in human history,
but the Western presstitutes brand Putin as the one who is homicidal.
Listen
to these members of Congress who represent Americans in Washington:
Senate
Majorithy Leader Mitch McConnel (R, Ky) said referring to the thrice
elected President of Russia: “He’s a thug.” McConnel has gone
along with Washington’s mass murder of peoples for 15 years, and
this accomplice to mass murder said that Washington’s murder of
countless millions, which have sent refugees all over the Western
world, are not evidence against America. In his response to Trump’s
statement, McConnel actually said: “We don’t operate in any way
the way the Russians do. I think there’s a clear distinction here
that all Americans understand, and I would not have characterized it
that
way.” http://www.politico.com/story/2017/02/republicans-denounce-trumps-defense-of-killer-putin-234665
The
Republican senator from Florida, Marco Rubio, said: “We are not the
same as Putin.” Of course we aren’t. We are mass murderers.
The
Rebublican senator from Nebraska, Ben Sasse, said, and this is a
level of ignorance hard to believe even for Americans, that “Putin
is an enemy of political dissent. The U.S. celebrates political
dissent and the right for people to argue free from violence about
places or ideas that are in conflict [as at Cal Berkeley]. There is
no moral equivalency between the United States of America, the
greatest freedom loving nation in the history of the world, and the
murderous thugs that are in Putin’s defense of his cronyism.”
The
Wall Street Journal’s (WSJ) Bret Stephens said: “Trump puts US on moral
par with Putin’s Russia. Never in history has a President slandered
his country like this.”
No
Bret, you have it backwards. No US president has ever slandered
Russia like this. There is no moral equivalency between Washington
and Moscow. Washington is totally devoid of all morality. Russia is
not. It is not Russia that has murdered, maimed, and displaced
peoples in at least 9 countries in the last 15 years, sending
refugees all over the Western world, some of whom no doubt bear
legitimate grudges.
Trump’s
vice president, Mike Pence, rushed to tell NBC that Trump didn’t
mean that Washington is not morally superior to Putin’s Russia. Of
course the US is morally superior to everyone. The millions of
peoples we kill and dislocate are proof of our unquestioned moral
superiority. Every time we bomb a wedding, a funeral of the wedding
guests, a children’s soccer game, innumerable hospitals and medical
centers, schools, farms, public transportation, we exceptional and
indispensable Americans are demonstrating our moral superiority over
the Earth. Only the morally superior can commit vast crimes against
humanity without being held accountable.
Normal
relations with Russia do not seem to be in the cards. The
demonization and lies will continue. The New Cold War is too
important to the ruling establishment, and to the members of the
House and Senate who are dependent on military/security campaign
donations, for Trump to be allowed to normalize relations with
Russia.
Everything
that Reagan and Gorbachev achieved has been undone. The material
interest of a few has again placed humanity at risk.
“The
greatest freedom loving nation in the history of the world” can’t
even have a debate about it, because a debate is Putin apologetics
and moral equivalency.

ever an image captured the dysfunctional nature of the European Union
it was the assembled leaders of the 28 member states photographed at
an ancient fortress on the Maltese island this week.
February
05, 2017 “Information
Clearing House”
– “Sputnik”
– Talk about “fortress mentality”! The European
presidents and prime ministers were scheduled to deal
with migration from North Africa as a threat to the
bloc’s stability.
But
instead, their summit was dominated by the issue of US
President Donald Trump and the shared perception that the new
occupant of the White House poses an urgent challenge to the
EU.
“Prime
ministers and presidents at Malta summit line up to scorn
Trump’s conduct, accusing him of lack of respect,”reported the
Guardian.
French
President Francois Hollande even said that if the EU did not unite
to oppose Trump’s populist nationalism, then the bloc was doomed
to collapse.
The
irony of the European leaders’ existential apprehensions
about the new American president is laughable. For months, these
same European politicians have been led by the nose by Western
state propaganda alleging it was Russian President Vladimir Putin who
is the top threat to EU stability.
European
news media – like their US counterparts – have pushed
sensationalist claims that the Kremlin is out to subvert EU
democracies, undermine “European values”, promote
Eurosceptic political parties and smash the union.
German
Chancellor Angela Merkel warned only
a few weeks ago that putative Russian state hackers would now turn
their attention to forthcoming elections in Netherlands,
France and Germany as they had allegedly done in the US
to help Donald Trump get elected.
Amazingly
with this backdrop of anti-Russia fear-mongering, the EU
leaders in Malta this week made not a single mention of “Russian
threat”.
All
the angst of Europe’s supposed leaders was devoted to Donald
Trump undermining their institutional existence.
What
does that say about the credibility of EU politicians? When
they flip from making hysterical allegations against Russia
to huddling around like frightened children fretting
about how a new American president might induce their demise.
It
is consummate proof that the present array of incumbent EU
leaders are completely out of touch with reality. No wonder
they are quaking in their boots about forthcoming
elections. Because one suspects that they fear a day of reckoning
with angry electorates who are sick of the incompetence
at the helm of government.
Another
staggering example of disconnect among the EU cabal was the
appalling violence in Ukraine this week. While the dithering
politicians were fretting about Donald Trump, they were
apparently oblivious to the war raging in Europe.
The
Kiev regime – which the EU brought to power in a coup
d’état in 2014, along with the Americans – this week
unleashed a full-on offensive against the breakaway
self-declared republics of Donetsk and Lugansk.
Thousands
of rockets, mortars and tank artillery rounds rained down on
civilian areas of Donetsk city and suburbs in some of the
worse violence seen since the Minsk peace accord was signed
in February 2015.
Kiev
officials openly admitted that
their military forces were “advancing” on the
rebel-held territories. The unilateral violation of the Minsk
ceasefire was also confirmed by the ineffective monitors
belonging to the Organization for Security and Cooperation
in Europe, as well as BBC media footage showing
tanks sheltering among apartment blocks in the town
of Avdiivka.
Several
civilian deaths were reported from the artillery barrages by the
Kiev regime’s military, which Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman
Maria Zakharova denounced as
“barbaric violations of the Geneva Convention” – the
international law forbidding the targeting of non-combatants.
Yet
while these war crimes were carried out on the people of eastern
Ukraine, the Kiev regime’s president, Petro Poroshenko, was being
entertained in Berlin. Which is rather fitting, given the
despicable history of Berlin using Ukrainian proxies to carry
out extermination programs against ethnic Russian people.
None
of this criminal war in Europe made it on to the
agenda of the EU leaders holding their summit in Malta,
purportedly convened to discuss future threats to the bloc.
Unbelievably,
top German news publication Deutsche Welle in its weekly
round-up of global events did not have a single article on the
criminal depredations of the Kiev regime and their Neo-Nazi
brigades.
The
BBC, the British state broadcaster, defied its own video evidence
of Kiev’s tanks violating the ceasefire, by venting
unfounded claims that Russia was fueling “aggression
against Ukraine”.
Apart
from the incriminating evidence of aggression by the
US and EU-backed Kiev regime, the other key factor here is timing.
The renewed escalation in violence occurred one day after US
President Trump held a phone call with Russia’s Vladimir Putin.
That phone call last Saturday was reportedly cordial
and underscored the leaders’ commitment to end the conflict
in Ukraine.
No
doubt that is why the Kiev regime launched its offensive the very
next day in a brazen attempt to try to blame Moscow
for initiating the violence – despite all evidence to the
contrary – and hence to solicit American military support. The
Kiev regime is petrified that Trump might actually make a deal
with Putin, which would leave it stewing its own corruption and
bankruptcy.
Of
course, reliable Western mouthpieces like US Senator John
McCain, suitably amplified by media
outlets, gave cover to the Kiev regime’s ploy by claiming
that “Putin was testing Trump’s resolve”.
Shamefully,
Trump’s new ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley,
embarrassed herself by peddling the
arrant nonsense of “Russian aggression” in Ukraine.
Western
politicians and media are, as usual, dealing in falsehood
and fantasy over Ukraine’s conflict. They cannot face the facts
that a horrible regime was violently installed in Kiev
against an elected government, under the auspices
of Washington and the EU. Worse still, the West is complicit
in the ongoing war crimes through omission or willful
distortion about the suffering being inflicted on the
people of eastern Ukraine.
Blaming
Donald Trump or Vladimir Putin for the demise of the EU is
the ultimate form of scapegoating by a bunch of incompetent
leaders. They are so incompetent that they can’t even decide on who
is the supposed threat to their existence.
A
criminal war is raging in Europe, with civilians being
blown to pieces in apartment blocks in Donetsk, and
at the very same time, the so-called EU leaders don’t even see
fit to talk about that during their summit in Malta
this week.
At
this rate, the European Union, as we know it, is doomed. The
disconnect between rulers and the reality of ordinary
citizens is so vast that implosion seems inevitable. The ultimate
in unaccountability is the way the EU has created the appalling
crisis in Ukraine, and yet doesn’t even discuss the manifest
suffering of people there.
No,
the EU “leaders” are too busy discussing overblown or
imaginary dangers posed by Trump or Putin. Getting its own house
in order by being accountable and responsive to the
democratic needs of citizens is evidently not on the
agenda.
One
final note is that Francois Hollande, the most unpopular French
leader since the Second World War, is in the running
to become the next president of the European Council.
Enough said.

(CET) op BBC World Service.
Asscher noemde in z’n hypocriete toespraak de VS ‘the land of the free…….’ ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha!
De VS ‘the land of the free’ ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! Asscher? ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha!

In
2016, America Killed Over 24,000 of the Nationals Donald Trump Just
Banned
On
the other hand, nationals of banned countries killed zero Americans
in the last 30 years.
How
many people has America killed in these very same countries in
2016 alone? Over
24,000.
In
2016, the US dropped 26,172 bombs in Iraq, Syria,
Afghanistan, Libya, Yemen, Somalia and Pakistan.
Five
of these countries are on Trump’s “Muslim Ban”
list — including Iraq, Iran, Syria, Libya, Yemen, Somalia and
Sudan.
Here’s
the breakdown of the number of bombs the US dropped on
Muslim-majority countries last year.
1.
Syria gets bombed over 12,000 times in 2016
In
2016, America dropped over 12,000 bombs on Syria in its fight against
ISIS.
2.
Bombs on Iraq fell a hundred short of Syria
During
former President Barack Obama’s last year in office, the country
witnessed over 12,000 bombs, killing at least 6,878 civilians the
same year.
Trump
has repeatedly suggested that America could get “another
chance” to steal Iraq’s oil — saying that ISIS probably
wouldn’t exist if the US had “kept
the oil.“
3.
Libya got bombed nearly 500 times
4.
Yemen has been dubbed “one of the worst humanitarian
catastrophes”
