VS moet stoppen met de bouw van nog een militaire luchtmachtbasis op Okinawa

World Beyond War (WBW) is een petitie gestart om VS president Joe Biden te bewegen de in aanbouw zijnde extra militaire luchtmachtbasis op Okinawa te stoppen. Een enorm aantal organisaties heeft zich al achter deze petitie geschaard, alsook Denny Tamaki, de gouverneur van dat Japanse eiland….. Daarnaast heeft meer dan 70% van de bevolking zich uitgesproken tegen de bouw van deze basis met de naam Henoko….. 

De bouw van deze basis vormt bovendien een groot gevaar voor het kwetsbare ecosysteem van de Okinawa kustwateren….. Daarnaast wordt de bevolking van Okinawa geplaagd door: -geluidsoverlast van de al bestaande luchtmachtbasis op dat eiland (landende en opstijgende militaire vliegtuigen), -de zware luchtvervuiling, inclusief het kankerverwekkende ultrafijnstof, geproduceerd door deze vliegtuigen, -misdadig gedrag van het personeel van de al bestaande VS bases (zoals verkrachting van meisjes en vrouwen) en -milieuvervuiling van de bodem en zee (dat tevens een gevaar vormt voor het al aangehaalde ecosysteem in de kustwateren) met giftige stoffen zoals PFAS……

Ondanks dat Okinawa maar 0,6% van het totale gebied van Japan beslaat, heeft het eiland 70% van het totaal aantal militaire VS bases, inclusief een luchtmachtbasis…… In totaal wordt er 20% van het Okinawa grondgebied gebruikt voor VS bases….. (Japan huisvest in totaal 119 militaire bases van de VS…)…. Daarnaast zou de nieuwe basis worden gebouwd op een actieve breuk, waardoor de desastreuze gevolgen van een aardbeving onder die basis, een groot gevaar vormen voor mens en natuur….. (denk daarbij o.a. aan tanks met kerosine op die basis*)

De kosten voor de bouw van de basis is al meer dan 2 keer verdubbeld van 3,3 miljard naar 8,7 miljard dollar en volgens een aantal ingenieurs zal de basis nooit afgebouwd worden, zoals die van het Center for Strategic and
International Studies (CSIS), waarbij men ook wijst op de actieve breuk onder die basis…..

Je kan er donder opzeggen dat het besluit tot de bouw van deze basis is ingegeven door de plannen van het Pentagon om China (en/of Noord-Korea) aan te vallen……. (waarbij men zelfs uitgaat van de mogelijkheid een ‘beperkte nucleaire’ oorlog te voeren tegen China…..**)

Het is zonder meer een schande dat de Japanse regering toestemming voor de bouw heeft gegeven, terwijl men wist wat dit betekent voor de al door VS bases geplaagde inwoners van Okinawa……..

Terecht mogen ook wij deze petitie tekenen, dus doe dat alsjeblieft en geeft het door!!

End the U.S. Military Air Base Contruction in Henoko, Okinawa

We, the undersigned,
wish to convey our strong support for the Governor of Okinawa, Denny
Tamaki, and the indigenous people of Okinawa, and their request for the
cessation of the building of a U.S. military airbase in Henoko.

On January 13th 2021, Governor Tamaki sent a letter to President
Biden (enclosed) outlining the many reasons the airbase construction
project at Henoko should be dismantled, including:

Overwhelming opposition by the Indigenous Okinawan people. In a
prefectural referendum, 71.7% voted against the project. There have been
continuous protests and even hunger strikes by the public.

Engineering unfeasibility. The construction plan requires large-scale
land reclamation work, but the seabed that will be reclaimed is as soft
as mayonnaise and poses massive engineering problems which has caused
the completion date pushed from 2014 to 2030 and the cost from $3.3
billion to $8.7 billion. Some engineers do not believe that it is even
possible to build. Even Mark Cancian of the Center for Strategic and
International Studies (CSIS) has concluded in a fact-driven report that
it is unlikely that the project will ever be completed.[1] Moreover, the
site is vulnerable to earthquakes. There is an active fault under the
site.[2]

Irreparable environmental damage. The ocean area that is being
reclaimed is unique in its biodiversity and is the home of endangered
marine mammals such as dugongs.

The United States maintains 119 military facilities in Japan.
Okinawa, which makes up only 0.6% of the entire land area of Japan holds
70% of these facilities, which cover 20% of this small island. For
decades, the people of Okinawa have suffered at the hands of occupying
forces. The U.S. military has already caused grievous harm by aircraft
accidents, crimes by U.S. service members and major environmental
pollution by toxic substances such as PFAS. The very least the U.S.
could do is to stop building yet another base on this besieged island.

Dear President-Elect Biden and Vice President-Elect Harris,

On behalf of the 1.45 million people of Okinawa, Japan, I would like
to congratulate you on your election to be the next President and Vice
President of the United States. We appreciate the United States’
tremendous contributions to Japan’s national security as well as to the
peace and stability in East Asia.

Many people in the United States have personal relationships with
Okinawa. For example, the Okinawa Association of America in the State of
California has the largest membership in the mainland United States,
and it has reached over 1,000 members. Likewise, about 50,000 people in
the State of Hawaii have Okinawan ancestry through immigration. The
people of Okinawa also have fostered its unique culture by incorporating
American culture after World War II. These symbolize the strong,
history-based ties between the United States and Okinawa, and I look
forward to building close relations with your Administration.

I understand that Japan-U.S. relations, including the bilateral
security alliance, have contributed greatly to Japan’s national security
as well as the peace and stability in East Asia. Meanwhile, Okinawa has
played a disproportionately large role in upholding the alliance. More
than 70 percent of the military facilities exclusively used by the U.S.
forces in Japan (including Kadena Air Base) are concentrated on Okinawa,
even though Okinawa accounts for only 0.6 percent of the entire land
area of Japan. This has led to numerous difficulties for the people of
Okinawa since the end of World War II. These include military aircraft
noise/accidents, unfortunate crimes committed by U.S. service members,
and environmental pollution by toxic substances such as PFAS.

Given the recent military rise of China, the U.S. military bases
concentrated in Okinawa have become increasingly vulnerable. I am aware
that the U.S. Marines have introduced new operational concepts such as
the Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations (EABO) and are shifting to
deploying more dispersed, small-scale capabilities over the
Indo-Pacific. In the hope of keeping the Japan-U.S. alliance
sustainable, I would like to request your support to reduce the military
footprint in Okinawa when making further decisions regarding
Indo-Pacific policies.

Currently, the construction project of the Futenma Replacement
Facility (FRF) on Okinawa faces strong public opposition. The former
Governor Takeshi Onaga and I won the gubernatorial elections by holding
up a campaign promise to oppose the plan. In a prefectural referendum on
the FRF project, 434,273 people, accounting for the overwhelming
majority of total voters (71.7 percent), casted votes in opposition to
the project.

The construction plan requires large-scale land reclamation work, but
the ocean where the work is planned is globally known for its vast
biodiversity and is home to endangered marine mammals such as dugongs.
Since the seabed that will be reclaimed is as soft as mayonnaise, the
project requires a massive foundation improvement by driving 71,000
piles into the seabed. The Japanese government, which oversees the
project, currently estimates that the construction will take at least
another 12 years with an overall cost of about $9.3 billion. Geologists
also warn of the risk of potential uneven ground subsidence because
about 70% of the reclamation work will be conducted in an area where the
water is very deep, the seabed is very uneven, and the soft foundation
is distributed randomly. The seismic activities in the area have also
been addressed by experts, who have expressed concern about the
existence of active earthquake fault lines.

These difficulties could adversely impact the Marines’ future
operations in the FRF even after the project is completed more than 10
years from now. If a strong earthquake occurs in the area, it could
cause serious risks to U.S. service members, the Marines’ equipment and
facilities, and the overall U.S. national interest. With these issues in
mind, I would like to request a comprehensive reassessment of the
project by your Administration.

We thank you for your attention in this matter and look forward to working together.

De concentratie van CO2 in de atmosfeer passeert voor het eerst in de wetenschappelijk beschreven geschiedenis de grens van 420 ppm

De hoeveelheid deeltjes CO2 in de atmosfeer heeft voor het eerst in de door wetenschappers beschreven geschiedenis de grens van 420 ppm overschreden (ppm >> deeltjes per miljoen, of Engels: Parts Per Million)……. Eén en ander werd gemeten door het Mauna Loa Observatory op het grote eiland van Hawaï..

Toen het onderzoekscentrum van de National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) haar metingen begon aan het eind van de 50er jaren van de vorige eeuw was die concentratie rond de 315 ppm, afgelopen zaterdag gaf de gemiddelde meting aan dat het aantal deeltjes per miljoen op 421,21 lag…….

Voorbijgaan aan 420 ppm hoeveelheid broeikasgas in de atmosfeer is een verontrustende stap dichterbij de verdubbeling van de hoeveelheid CO2 in de atmosfeer dan in de pre-industriële situatie……. Het overschrijden van de grens met 416 ppm CO2, betekent dat we het middelpunt hebben bereikt tussen de pre-industriële concentratie CO2 van 278 ppm en de verdubbeling van dat cijfer 556 ppm….. Hoewel de meting van zaterdag een meting was op die dag (ofwel niet gezegd dat dit nu nog zo is) moet niet vergeten worden dat de hoeveelheid CO2 deeltjes de laatste maanden hoger was dan 417 van die deeltjes per miljoen…..

Het verdubbelen van de CO2 uitstoot zal leiden tot een klimaatopwarming van 2,6 tot 4,1 graden Celsius en zal eerdere gematigde voorspellingen te niet doen….. Het is zelfs zo dat de 1,5 graad Celsius opwarming in het jaar 2100, die werd afgeproken tijdens de klimaattop van Parijs, al in 2024 kan worden gehaald en zelfs dan al hoger kan uitvallen….. 

In het artikel over deze zaak op Common Dreams, geschreven door Kenny Stancil en hieronder weergegeven, stelt deze terecht dat we niet alleen met CO2 te maken hebben, maar ook met methaangas en zwavelhexafluoride, ook dat zijn broeikasgassen die met grote hoeveelheden worden uitgestoten en opgeslagen in de atmosfeer, waarbij methaangas een meer dan 80 keer zo sterk broeikasgas is dan CO2….. Ook de hoeveelheid zwavelhexafluoride is flink gestegen, al gaat dat om 10 deeltjes per biljoen, is deze hoeveelheid verontrustend, zeker als je bedenkt dat deze hoeveelheid een verdubbeling is van het cijfer in 2003…… 1 molecuul zwavelhexafluoride kan 23.900 keer meer opwarmen dan 1 molecuul CO2…… (deze stof wordt o.a. gebruikt als isolatiemateriaal in energiecentrales en de rest van het elektriciteitsnet)

Volgens Zeke Hausfather, een wetenschapper van het ‘Breakthrough Institute in California’, zal zelfs als de uitstoot in zeer korte tijd zou zijn afgenomen, de aarde nog jarenlang zal opwarmen, dit daar de opwarming zich niet in een paar dagen heeft voltrokken, maar vanaf de industriële revolutie…. Wat overigens niet genoemd wordt is het cumulatieve effect dat al lang optreedt bij de opwarming van de aarde, zo komt door het verdwijnen van ijs en sneeuw in het arctische gebied en van gletsjers zeewater vrij dan wel rotsen of aarde, deze nemen de warmte op terwijl ijs en sneeuw de zonnewarmte terugstralen, daardoor warmt de aarde nog sneller op waardoor er nog meer ijs en sneeuw afsmelt, enz. enz….. Hetzelfde geldt voor de grote hoeveelheden methaangas die vrijkomen door het smelten van de permafrost, deze warmt de aarde nog sneller op waardoor er nog meer methaangas vrijkomt enz. enz…… (methaangas blijft overigens niet zo lang in de atmosfeer aanwezig dan CO2, echter de hoeveelheden zijn wel degelijk desastreus…….)

Dan komen er nog gigantische hoeveelheden CO2 en methaangas vrij bij het verbranden van oerwoud, dat vorig jaar weer een record liet zien, verbranding voor het houden van intensieve veehouderij, dan wel voor het telen van soja als voedsel voor de enorme hoeveelheden ‘consumptie dieren’ die wereldwijd worden gehouden, zo is Nederland na China de nummer 2 importeur van die soja….. De wereldsojaproductie gaat voor meer dan 80% naar diervoer……. In Nederland wordt jaarlijks een hoeveelheid van 600 miljoen dieren gehouden die worden groot en doodgemarteld en die enorme veestapel zorgt ervoor dat Nederland een onevenredig grote uitstoter is van methaangas (door die dieren geproduceerd) en daarmee is Nederland eveneens een onevenredig grote aanjager van de klimaatverandering…… (‘waarin een klein land al niet groot kan zijn….’) Overigens werd een paar maanden geleden bekend gemaakt dat de gehele EU veestapel goed is voor een grotere uitstoot aan CO2 dan alle autoverkeer in dat deel van Europa……

Lees het artikel van Stancil en zegt het voort: het is de hoogste tijd dat de mensheid wakker wordt en probeert de klimaatverandering nog enigszins af te remmen (stoppen zoals men in Parijs en later in Madrid heeft afgesproken, is schier onmogelijk!!

‘We Have to Act’: Atmospheric CO2 Passes 420 PPM for First Time Ever

The
concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide surged past 420 parts per
million for the first time in recorded history this past weekend, according to a measurement taken at the Mauna Loa Observatory on the Big Island of Hawaii.

When the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
research station “began collecting CO2 measurements in the late 1950s,
atmospheric CO2 concentration sat at around 315 PPM,” the Washington Post reported. “On Saturday, the daily average was pegged at 421.21 PPM—the first time in human history that number has been so high.”

Climate activist Greta Thunberg took notice of NOAA’s most recent
data on CO2 levels. She described the first-ever documented eclipse of
420 PPM of CO2 in Earth’s atmosphere as “truly groundbreaking.”

Exceeding 420 PPM of the heat-trapping gas “is a disconcerting
milestone in the human-induced warming of the planet, around the halfway
point on our path toward doubling preindustrial CO2 levels,” the Post noted, adding:

There is special significance in reaching and surpassing a concentration of 416 PPM. It means we’ve passed the midpoint between preindustrial CO2 levels, around 278 PPM, and a doubling of that figure, or 556 PPM.

The record of 421 PPM reached Saturday is just a single point and occurred as CO2 levels are nearing their yearly peak. But the levels over the past two months, of more than 417 PPM, signal that the annual average concentration is likely to exceed 416 PPM.

While the growing concentration of atmospheric CO2—which increases the global average temperature and the number and severity of extreme weather events—is
a long-term trend that corresponds with the rise of fossil fuel-powered
capitalism, it has accelerated particularly rapidly since the 1970s.

The doubling of atmospheric CO2 is expected to increase Earth’s temperature by 2.6 to 4.1ºC above preindustrial averages, a level of planetary heating that would “rul[e] out more modest warming scenarios,” as the Post noted.

“Even if greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions were to plummet overnight, the planet would continue warming for years to come,” the Post
added. That’s because, as Zeke Hausfather, a climate scientist at the
Breakthrough Institute in California, told the newspaper: “The amount of
warming that the world is experiencing is a result of all of our
emissions since the industrial revolution—not just our emissions in the
last year.”

As the Post reported, CO2 isn’t the only GHG with “worrying trends.” Emissions of methane and sulfur hexafluoride have spiked, too.

Although
methane doesn’t remain in the atmosphere as long as CO2, it absorbs
heat much more effectively, which means that it greatly exacerbates the
climate crisis. According to the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF VS), methane is 84 times more potent than CO2 in the first two decades after its release. 

Here’s the Post
on sulfur hexafluoride, a GHG that “results from the production of
insulators used on electrical grids [and] also reached all-time records
of 10 parts per trillion”:

While its
concentration remains orders of magnitude more dilute than that of most
other major greenhouse gases, its rate of increase in the atmosphere has
doubled since 2003.

Sulfur hexafluoride is also thousands of times more potent—a single molecule can cause 23,900 times more warming than
a molecule of CO2. And a single molecule of sulfur hexafluoride can
stick around in the atmosphere for more than three millennia.

While the Paris climate agreement seeks to limit the rise in annual mean global temperature to 1.5°C above preindustrial averages by the end of the 21st century, the World Meteorological Organization warned last year that there is a 20% chance the world will hit or surpass that level of warming in at least one year by 2024.

“The science is clear,” United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said
in December. “Unless the world cuts fossil fuel production by 6% every
year between now and 2030, things will get worse. Much worse.”

As forest ecologist Giorgio Matteucci tweeted Monday, “We have to act!”

VS bezig geheime basis uit te breiden als voorbereiding op oorlog met China en/of Noord-Korea

Dat de
VS met vuur speelt als het gaat om wereldpolitiek zal niemand nog
verbazen, ook al doen de reguliere westerse media, politici en
rechtse denktanks nog zo hun best om de schuld daarvoor te leggen bij
de NB door de VS zelf als vijanden aangemerkte landen als Rusland,
Iran, China en Noord-Korea……

De VS
houdt al een paar jaar oorlogsschepen in de buurt van de Zuid-Chinese
zee, zo zou het nu weer een paar ‘supervliegdekschepen’ in de buurt
hebben en dat alles tegen ‘Chinese expansie’ (ha! ha! ha!
ha!). China heeft niet voor niets wat rotseilandjes in deze zee
geclaimd, zeker als je ziet dat de VS een groot aantal militaire
bases rond de oostkant van China heeft ingericht, inclusief in Zuid-Korea……* De VS stelt
dan ook zoals gezegd en volkomen hypocriet dat China expansie politiek bedrijft in de
Zuid-Chinese Zee, terwijl de VS zelfs op veel grotere afstanden
van de eigen territoriale wateren eilanden heeft geclaimd, zoals Hawaï (totaal belachelijk dat dit VS grondgebied is, dit is niets anders dan een smerig koloniaal overblijfsel!!).

Het is niet meer dan logisch dat China een groot deel van de Zuid-Chinese Zee claimt, al was het alleen al als buffer tegen de grote aanwezigheid van VS bases rond die zee en alle marine manoeuvres van de VS in die zee….

Een
ander eiland, of beter gezegd eilandje dat zich bevindt tussen Hawaï
en Japan is een ‘geheim eiland’, geheim wat betreft de VS basis op dat eiland met de naam ‘Wake-eiland’. De VS is bezig de
militaire basis op dat eiland, waarop ook een militair vliegveld,
fiks uit te breiden…… Dit eiland zou buiten het bereik liggen van
Chinese en Noord-Koreaanse raketten…… Alleen dat feit al geeft
aan dat de VS werkelijk rekening houdt een oorlog tegen één van
deze twee landen te beginnen…….

De VS
dat zo vaak de vuilbek vol heeft over het bewaren van de stabiliteit,
waar het andere landen beschuldigt deze stabiliteit te ondermijnen, terwijl het zelf illegale oorlogen begint die elke stabiliteit
in de regio van zo’n oorlog totaal destabiliseert,…… Neem dit soort uitlatingen tegen Iran, dat
nooit een expansie oorlog is begonnen, terwijl de VS in de buurt van
Iran, alleen deze eeuw maar liefst 3 illegale oorlogen is gestart….

Onbegrijpelijk
dat andere westerse landen als makke schapen, of beter nog als
debiele schapen achter de VS aansjokken en deze uiterst agressieve
terreurentiteit keer op keer haar gang laten gaan, dat heeft sinds
het eind van WOII aan ruim meer dan 22,5 miljoen mensen het leven
gekost, waarvan in deze eeuw ruim meer dan 2,5 miljoen
(massamoorden waaraan ook andere NAVO-lidstaten, tevens VS hielenlikkers zoals Nederland hebben deelgenomen…..)……

Considered one of the most
strategically important unincorporated US island outposts in the
world, Wake Island is also among the most restricted territories
claimed by the US (also claimed by the Marshall Islands), given it
remains a key American military outpost located about halfway between
Hawaii and Japan.

It has historically served as a
vital staging ground for US aircraft operating in the Western Pacific
and as a remote line of defense, and is more recently witnessing
military build-up as part of the US Navy’s “pivot toward the
Pacific” —
especially given rising US-China tensions and the controversial
presence of two US supercarriers in the disputed South China Sea.

Drive shows
significant expansion
to facilities, including to the airfield,
which has a nearly 10,000 foot runway. Military publications have
previously
note that  “Wake is the only 10,000-foot runway for a
4,000-mile stretch of Pacific Ocean.”

The report
details that images “The
War Zone obtained
from Planet Labs dated June 25th, 2020 shows that substantial
improvements to the base have occurred recently. Based on archival
satellite imagery, the major expansions to the airfield began early
this year and are still underway today.”

as well as an enlarged secondary apron area on the west end on the

But Wake
Island would be out of reach in any rapid conflict with either China
or North Korea, which would target nearer bases up to and including
Guam with long-range cruise missiles.

   

Thus
Wake Island would be considered a first line fall-back position in
any hot war with major US enemies in Asia. Conscious of this, it
appears the Pentagon is busy rapidly improving the remote atoll.

Hawaï: grondwater wordt bedreigd door ‘versleten’ mega tanks brandstof van VS leger

Het
grootste gevaar voor Hawaï komt niet van Noord-Koreaanse ‘kernraketten’, maar van het
VS leger dat daar met enorme aantallen militairen is gestationeerd. 75 jaar
geleden werden er enorme ondergrondse brandstoftanks geconstrueerd op
het eiland Oahu en zoals te verwachten was, door corrosie dreigen die
tanks lek te raken…… 

Eerder
gebeurde dit op een Californische luchtmachtbasis, waarna de tanks
werden vervangen door nieuwe, lullig genoeg moest daar eerst 1,5
miljoen gallons aan brandstof voor weglekken…….. (een gallon is
iets meer dan 3,7854 liter ofwel het gaat hier om meer dan 5,5
miljoen liter brandstof…..)

Echter ook op Oahu is in 2014 een hoeveelheid van 27.000 gallons aan brandstof weggelekt…… Intussen worden er al sporen van petroleum gevonden in het drinkwater, wat volgens de autoriteiten geen gevaar vormt voor de volksgezondheid……..* De tanks liggen op een zeer korte afstand van het zich daaronder bevindende drinkwater….

Niet
vreemd dus dat de bevolking van Hawaï en zeker van het eiland Oahu
eist dat het leger van de VS actie onderneemt, voordat de drinkwatervoorraad van Oahu voorgoed is verpest………

– After
the big North Korean missile scare in Hawaii a year ago, one would
think that missiles are the greatest threat to the island of Oahu.
Yet, it’s not missiles that are the threat, it’s our own U.S.
military and its massive jet fuel storage tanks that are leaking into
Oahu’s drinking water aquifer.

A
complex of mammoth 20-story military jet fuel storage tanks buried
twenty stories down in a bluff called Red Hill are perched only 100
feet above Honolulu’s water supply.  The walls on the
75-year-old jet fuel tanks are now so thin that the edge of a dime is
thicker.  Each of the twenty tanks holds 12.5 million gallons of
jet fuel, although eighteen are in operation now.  225,000,000
gallons of jet fuel in total are a mere 100 feet from causing a
catastrophic disaster for the island of Oahu.

In
fact, disaster has already struck when in 2014, 27,000 gallons of jet
fuel leaked from a tank that had been repaired with a welded patch. 
The welding gave way and tens of thousands of gallons of fuel leaked
into the water supply.  Over the years, studies have documented
leaks dating back to 1947, the continued corrosion of the tank liners
and the risk of a catastrophic fuel release.

Drinking
water is currently safe to drink, but traces of petroleum chemicals
are being detected in
the groundwater near the tanks.

Concerned
citizens on the island, have for decades been trying to get the U.S.
Navy to take the dangerous tanks out of Red Hill.  The military
states that the underground fuel tanks are of strategic importance to
U.S. national security and they are being maintained as good as
75-year old tanks can be. Yet, those who live on Oahu say: “That’s
not good enough! You can’t have national security by jeopardizing
the health security of your citizens.”

It
is not surprising that the U.S. Navy has made little effort to remove
the tanks and put replacements in a less dangerous place.  The
military’s hold on the island of Oahu and its politicians is very
strong both psychologically and economically. Oahu is filled with
U.S. military bases and their accompanying corporations that supply
the military with equipment and services.

The
state of Hawaii is one of the most militarized states in the nation
and Oahu is one of the most militarized islands with seven major U.S.
military bases and a total of
36,620 military personnel:  Army 16,313, Navy 7,792 (drop
of 8,000 from 2015), Marines 6,370 and Air Force 4,937,
Coast Guard 1208.

When
the 64,000 military family members and military contractors are
added to the active duty military, the military-industrial complex on
Oahu numbers about 100,000, which is 10 percent of Oahu’s total
population of 988,000. The state of Hawaii has only1.4
million citizens.

The
U.S. military installations on the island of Oahu began being
constructed soon after the overthrow of the sovereign nation of
Hawaii by U.S. businessmen and a small contingent of U.S. Marines:

–Pearl
Harbor Naval Base- headquarters of the US Pacific Fleet Navy and is
the homeport for
25 warships,15 attack submarines, nine guided-missile destroyers and
a guided-missile cruiser;

–Hickam
Air Force Base- headquarters of the US Pacific Air Forces and
has squadrons of
F-15s, F22, C-17 and B-2 bombers;

–Kaneohe
Marine Base- Marine Air Station and three Marine Regiments

–Schofield
Barracks- 25thInfantry
Division

And
the Tropic Regions Test
Center (TRTC)

—Camp
Smith-headquarters
of the United Indo-Pacific Command which is responsible for
all U.S. military activity in the greater Asia and Pacific region
including India, Camp Smith is also the headquarters of the U.S.
Marine Corps Forces, Pacific.

–Fort
Shafter-headquarters for
the U.S. Army Pacific

—Asia-Pacific
Center for
Security Studies-military educational facility for military and
civilian officials from countries from Asia and the Pacific for
courses on international security strategy.

—Tripler
Army Medical Center and
Veterans Administration Medical Center-provides medical assistance to
active duty military and veterans.

—
U.S.
Coast Guard 14th District for the Pacific (while not part of the
Department of Defense-, during wartime, the Coast Guard can go under
command of DOD)- three 225-foot buoy tenders, four 110-foot patrol
boats, two 87-foot coastal patrol boats, four small boat stations,
two sector commands, an air station, a Far East command, five
detachments and over 400 aids to navigation.

Major
military installations have been built on other islands of Hawaii.
The Puhakaloa
Training Area,
the largest U.S. military training area in the world with 133,000
acres for artillery, mortar, small arms and crew-served weapons
firing is located on the Big Island of Hawaii.  U.S. Air Force
bombers flying from the continental U.S. drop ordnance on the area
between the two volcanoes of the island of Hawaii.

On
the island of Kauai, the Pacific Missile Range Facility Barking Sands
(PMRF) is the world’s largest range capable of supporting surface,
submarines, aircraft, and space operations simultaneously. PMRF has
over 1,100 square miles of instrumented underwater range and over
42,000 square miles of controlled airspace.  The Navy is
currently using PMRF to test “hit to kill” technology using
direct collision of the anti-ballistic missile with its target
destroying the target by using only kinetic energy from the
force of the collision. The Navy’s Aegis Ballistic Missile
Defense System and
the Army’s Terminal High Altitude Area Defense System, or
THAAD are tested on Kauai at PMRF.

On
the island of Maui, the Maui High-Performance Computing Center,
a Department of Defense Supercomputing Resource Center managed by the
Air Force Research Laboratory and supporting the High-Performance
Computing Modernization Program, provided DoD scientists and
engineers with one of the world’s largest computers to solve
war-making computational problems.

According
to the Hawaii Chamber of Commerce, the economic direct and indirect
impacts of military expenditures in Hawaii generate $14.7 billion
into Hawaii’s economy, creating more than 102,000 jobs. The
military’s investments in Hawaii totals $8.8 billion. Military
procurement contracts amount to about $2.3 billion annually, making
it a prime source of contracting opportunities for hundreds of
Hawaii’s small businesses, including significant military
construction projects.

The
power of the U.S. military on issues in the Hawaiian Islands and its
politicians at all levels cannot be underestimated, nor can the
protection the military is given by its retirees and the citizens who
benefit from it. The pressure on city and state officials to accept
the status quo is very strong.

Finally,
the U.S. government has acknowledged the medical problems the
contamination of the drinking supply caused at another community- the
huge U.S. Marine Base at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and Marine
Corps Air Station (MCAS) New River, North Carolina.  From 1953
through 1987, tens of thousands of Marines and their families were
contaminated by two on-base water wells that were contaminated with
trichloroethylene (TCE), perchloroethylene (PCE), benzene, vinyl
chloride among other compounds from
on-base leaking storage tanks and an off-base dry cleaner.

At
long last, the Veterans Administration has acknowledged the dangerous
situation on the bases in North Carolina that was ignored for
decades.  The VA has declared that a large number of diseases
are caused by the chemicals and that military and family members who
have contracted these diseases and who are still living will be
compensated.  We can expect the same type of diseases with the
continuing leaks at Red Hill:

  • Bladder
    cancer

  • Breast
    cancer

  • Esophageal
    cancer

  • Female
    infertility

  • Hepatic
    steatosis

  • Kidney
    cancer

  • Leukemia

  • Lung
    cancer

  • Miscarriage

  • Multiple
    myeloma

  • Myelodysplastic
    syndromes

  • Neurobehavioral
    effects

  • Non-Hodgkin’s
    lymphoma

  • Renal
    toxicity

  • Scleroderma

  • Parkinson’s
    Disease

On
the other side of the country from North Carolina, the Navy has
already closed down one complex of underground jet fuel storage tanks
at Point Loma, California, which had 54 storage tanks.  The
riveted seams on the underground tanks began leaking as they aged. 
When 1.5 million gallons of fuel spilled from the site in 2006, the
U.S. Navy was decided to replace the tanks.

For
us on Oahu, the bottom line is that when, not if, the massive jet
fuel storage tanks leak into the aquifer of Honolulu, city, state and
federal officials must be held accountable– the public has given
them plenty of warning of their concerns.  As with lead in the
water supply in Flint, Michigan lead, officials knew that the
drinking water was contaminated but didn’t do anything to stop the
community from using it. Remarkably, none of the Flint officials have
gone to jail yet, but the community is demanding accountability for
malfeasance in office—which would be the same in Honolulu when
disaster strikes on the jet fuel storage tanks.

So,
we the citizens ask our elected leaders, why do they allow such a
disaster continue to threaten our water supply in Honolulu when we
know that 75-year-old tanks with corroding walls are continuing to
leak.

I
will make this personal.

I
am 72 years old and served 29 years in the U.S. military. I retired
20 years ago.  The twenty jet fuel storage tanks are 75 years
old and have served each of those 75 years and are still serving.

At
72, I have had the normal number of aches and pains including a hip
replacement that didn’t turn out the best and skin cancer surgery
that left skin grafts and patches on my face, head and leg.

At
75, the twenty-story jet fuel storage tanks also have had aches and
pains as well as their skin getting thinner and thinner due to seven
decades of corrosion.   Their skin or walls are as thin as
the edge of a dime in some places.  Patching of the thin skin of
the Red Hill jet fuel tanks didn’t turn out so well either, with
the welding on one of the patches giving way in 2014 and 27,000
gallons of jet fuel leaking out of the tanks jeopardizing the
Honolulu aquifer.

Those
of us in our 70s, whether we are fuel tanks or humans, know all about
leaks—it’s a hazard of age.

I
retired from the U.S. Army after 29 years of service.  After 75
years of service, it’s time to retire the leaking Red Hill Storage
tanks—and protect our precious water supply.

VS gaat raket oefeningen houden op Okinawa, ofwel bouwt de spanningen met China verder op….

Wat betreft de kop: niet
dat China een claim heeft gelegd op Okinawa, maar toch wil de Trump administratie de
oorlogsstemming jegens China verder
vergroten….. Deze door de VS steeds verder uitgebouwde agressie jegens China is een teken dat
de VS ook de Oost-Chinese zee wil blijven beheersen, niet omdat dit
binnen de territoriale wateren van de VS ligt, maar om haar macht over het gebied te
bestendigen en daarmee haar eigenbelang te behartigen…..

De
VS heeft een grote bek over de ‘expansie’ van China, terwijl het zelf
meer dan 800 militaire bases heeft over de wereld, waarvan een paar op het Japanse Okinawa.
Voorts is het meer dan belachelijk dat de VS nog steeds Hawaï tot
haar grondgebied mag rekenen, hetzelfde geldt voor Puerto Rico en Alaska……. Je kan trouwens rustig stellen dat landen met veel VS bases op haar grondgebied, door de VS worden gecontroleerd…… Zo durft Japan nu ook haar leger verder uit te bouwen en heeft het land het voornemen haar leger in het buitenland in te zetten, niet zoals nu al in VN verband, maar ook ter bescherming van Japanse belangen, dit in strijd met eerder gemaakte afspraken (na de terreur van Japan tijdens WOII), dit alles daar de Trump administratie daar geen bezwaar tegen heeft……

De VS nagelt China aan de paal voor agressie in de Zuid- en Oost-Chinese Zee, terwijl de VS oorlogsschepen niets te zoeken hebben in die zeeën en het op zich al een daad van agressie is dat die schepen daar manoeuvres houden!

De
allergrootste schande is wel dat de VS denkt overal op de wereld de de stabiliteit ten behoeve van eigenbelang te kunnen verstoren en daarbij de wereld steeds verder naar
de rand van WOIII voert…… Niet voor niets is de VS de grootste terreurentiteit op aarde!

To Hold “First-Ever” Missile Drill On Japan’s Okinawa

The
US Military will conduct its first-ever missile drill on the Japanese
Island of Okinawa, located in the East China Sea, as
Washington attempts to counter an increasingly aggressive
China. Japan
Times reported
on Thursday that the US military had notified Japan’s government
that it would deploy anti-ship missile systems around the
strategically important island this year, the original story was
released by Sankei Shimbun.

The
war exercise would fortify the island with possible
truck-mounted anti-ship cruise missile systems seen as a
countermeasure to potential attacks from Chinese surface-to-sea
ballistic rockets, the paper said.

China
has repeatedly railed against US military expansion in Asia and the
Pacific, describing the presence as a source of regional
instability. In the last several years, Chinese warships
have navigated near Okinawa, where roughly half of the
54,000 American troops are stationed, in an attempt to curb US
military dominance in the East China Sea.

To
counter the treat, Japan, has, in turn, postured its military along
the Japanese archipelago, a group of 6,852 islands
that extends over 1,850 miles from the Sea of Okhotsk northeast
to the Philippine Sea south along the northeastern coast of the
Eurasia continent.

Some
military strategists believe Beijing seeks to end
US military dominance in the western Pacific by exerting
control of the second island chain that links Japan’s southern
Ogasawara islands, the US territory of Guam, and Indonesia, said The
Japan Times.

China’s
rapid military build-up in the South China Sea has frightened
its Asian neighbors, with Japan’s defense chief last year
indicating China had been “unilaterally escalating” its military
war drills in the previous year.

Okinawa’s
strategic location between the Philippine, East China and South China
Seas makes it a critical military outpost to preserve freedom
of navigation of US warships and defend American security
interests in the region. Okinawa’s proximity to China, Taiwan,
the Korean Peninsula, and Japan supports rapid deployment of US
marines to anywhere in the Eastern Hemisphere.

America’s
presence on the island is also a critical component of its
strategy to preserve peace on the Korean Peninsula.

Washington
remains massively invested in Okinawa as a means of policing
Asia and supporting Japan in its national defense, an obligation
that started when the US signed the Security Treaty with Japan
in 1960.

While
America has hundreds of military bases around the world, the Okinawa
base with future missile drills this year could be an indication that
conflict with China is nearing in the East China Sea.

Mensen,
gelukkig zijn er nog verstandige mensen in de VS, zoals congreslid voor Hawaï, Tulsi Gabbard.

Al
tijdens de Obama administratie was ze fel tegen de VS bemoeienis met
Syrië, ofwel het ondersteunen van Al Qaida (en andere ‘gematigde’
terreurgroepen)….

In
de aanloop van de presidentsverkiezingen in 2016 stond Trump op
dezelfde lijn als Gabbard, de VS troepen zouden worden teruggetrokken uit Syrië. In april 2017 was het begin te zien van Trumps meningsverandering, nadat het Syrische leger zogenaamd een gifgasaanval had uitgevoerd op Khan Sheikhoun en hij op basis van opgeklopte media hysterie besloot Tomahawk raketten af te schieten op een Syrische luchtmachtbasis….. 

Aan het voorgaande hebben ongetwijfeld ook de vele aanvallen op Trump meegeholpen zijn mening bij te stellen, aanvallen voor het zogenaamd manipuleren
en hacken van de hiervoor bedoelde presidentsverkiezingen door Rusland (voor die Russische manipulaties is nog steeds
zelfs geen schijn van bewijs voor geleverd….)….. Uiteraard is e.e.a. ook het gevolg van het ophitsen tot oorlogvoering door de adviseurs die Trump terzijde stonden en staan, allen trouwe grootlobbyisten van het militair-industrieel complex…..

Niet
verder geluld, lees het artikel van Tyler Durden, eerder geplaatst op
Zero Hedge en door mij overgenomen van Anti-War, zie en vooral
beluister de video waarin Gabbard haar beschuldigingen
‘wereldkundig’ maakte in het congres.

Tot slot nog even dit: ‘fijn
ook dat de Nederlandse reguliere media zoveel belangstelling hadden voor de toespraak van Gabbard’ (niet dus)…… Ach ja, zo zou de eigen berichtgeving over
Syrië meteen als slechte propaganda te boek komen te staan, bovendien past het
niet in ‘het plaatje’ van die media, die kritiekloos het Nederlandse buitenlandbeleid
steunen, hoe desastreus ook, neem het steunen door Nederland van terreurgroepen (‘gematigde rebellen’) in Syrië met bakken geld en wapens (plus rollend oorlogstuig)*, waar de media het volk voor hebben klaargestoomd met het herhalen van de leugens over ‘gematigde rebellen’ en o.a. ‘gifgasaanvallen door Assad…’ 

Het gaat hier om dezelfde media die keer op keer lopen te spugen op het zogenaamd ‘fake news’ (nepnieuws) dat zou worden gebracht door de sociale media, waar zoals ook uit deze Nederlandse steun weer blijkt, diezelfde media vooral zichzelf aan schuldig aan maken….

(ZHE) — In
a rare and unprecedented speech delivered on the House floor just
two days after the nation memorialized 9/11, Democratic Hawaiian
Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard on Thursday slammed Washington’s
longtime support to anti-Assad jihadists in Syria, while also
sounding the alarm over the current build-up of tensions between the
US and Russia over the Syria crisis.

She
called on Congress to condemn what she called the Trump
Administration’s protection of al-Qaeda in
Idlib and slammed Washington’s policies in Syria
as “a
betrayal of the American people” — especially
the victims and families that perished on 9/11.

Considering
that Congresswoman Gabbard herself is an
Iraq war veteran and current Army reserve officer who served in the
aftermath of 9/11,
it’s all the more power and rare that a sitting Congress
member would make such forceful comments exposing the hypocrisy and
contradictions of US policy.

She
called out President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence by name on
the House floor in her speech:

“Two
days ago, President Trump and Vice President Pence delivered solemn
speeches about the attacks on 9/11,
talking about how much they care about the victims of al-Qaeda’s
attack on our country. But,
they are now standing up to protect the 20,000 to 40,000 al-Qaeda and
other jihadist forces in Syria,
and threatening Russia, Syria, and Iran, with military force if they
dare attack these terrorists.”

And
in perhaps a completely unprecedented moment, the Congresswoman
accused America’s Commander-in-Chief during her floor speech for
acting as “the
protective big brother of al-Qaeda and other jihadists”. 

Interestingly
she has elsewhere previously leveled the
same blistering criticism of the Obama administration during media
interviews for
its “regime
change policies” in
Syria.

Gabbard
continued:

“This
is a betrayal of the American people,
especially the victims of al-Qaeda’s attack on 9/11 and their
families, first responders, and my brothers and sisters in uniform
who have been killed or wounded in action and their families. For
the President, who is Commander in Chief, to act as the protective
big brother of al-Qaeda and other jihadists must be condemned by
every Member of Congress.”

Gabbard
has for especially the last couple of years been an outspoken critic
of US policies in Syria, and drew controversy in early 2017 when she
traveled to Damascus to meet privately with Syrian President Bashar
al-Assad. The move met with an icy reception among fellow
Congressional Democrats and raised
questions over possible violation of
the Logan Act.

But
interestingly though Thursday’s floor speech evoked President Trump
and his latest threats to intervene militarily against Assad and
Russia should chemical weapons be used in Idib, Gabbard
is actually echoing the very stance that Trump took on the campaign
trail and prior on Syria,
where he also described the Syrian rebel insurgency as being
led and filled by terrorists and jihadists in multiple informal
statements.

Trump
and Gabbard had even once
met to discuss Syria policy at a private meeting at Trump Tower in
November of 2016 just ahead of then president-elect Trump being sworn
into office.
At the time the two appeared to be in complete agreement over Syria
policy, after which Gabbard
said of the meeting, “I
felt it important to take the opportunity to meet with the
President-elect now before the drumbeats of war that neocons have
been beating drag us into an escalation of the war to overthrow the
Syrian government—a war which has already cost hundreds of
thousands of lives and forced millions of refugees to flee their
homes in search of safety for themselves and their families.”

The
following summer President Trump allegedly shut
down the CIA’s clandestine efforts for
overthrowing the Damascus government, a covert program called ‘Timber
Sycamore’, after reports said he was increasingly disturbed by the
brutal and jihadist nature of the armed opposition.

All
the way up until April 2018, he had appeared to be pushing toward
withdrawing the over 2,000 US troops from Syria, against which
advisers and neocon hawkish policy wonks  vehemently pushed
back. Trump had proposed, “Let
the other people take care of it now. Very soon, very soon,
we’re coming out. We’re going to get back to our country, where
we belong, where we want to be.”

However
just days after that statement video emerged from Idlib purporting to
show an Assad sarin attack on Khan Sheikhoun in Idlib province, to
which Trump responded with a brief Tomahawk missile strike on a
largely abandoned Syrian military airport in the center of the
country.

The
pro-regime change interventionists in the administration had
perhaps won out,
as Trump the following April launched an even bigger attack on
Damascus following more unverified opposition claims of another gas
attack.

And
now Congresswoman Gabbard appears to be calling Trump out and back to
that original policy path of military withdrawal and non-intervention
in Syria.

Kreeg gisteren een petitie toegestuurd van Care2, waarin de oproep te tekenen tegen het voornemen van de VS luchtmacht, als oefening een leefgebied van dolfijnen en walvissen bij Hawaï te bombarderen……

Te zot voor woorden, deze dieren hebben hun gehoor al zo hoognodig in de door herrie verscheurde stilte van de oceanen, dit door scheepsmotoren, olie- en gaswinning, seismische proeven t.b.v.: de (vooral) VS marine en nogmaals de oliemaffia………

Het is zo, dat zelfs het leven van walvisachtigen afhangt van een uitstekend functionerend gehoor…….

the Air Force from Bombing Hundreds of Dolphins and Whales!

The U.S.
Air Force plans to drop 100 bombs,
as large as 300 pounds each, on the waters north of Kauai, Hawaii,
each year for the next five years. The Air Force has requested
permission to harm 637 whales and dolphins in
executing this endeavor. If this plan is approved by the National
Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA-Fisheries), it is estimated
that dozens
of marine mammals would be permanently deafened, and hundreds would
suffer from temporary hearing loss and changes in natural behavior.
Species that would be affected include the humpback whale, sei whale,
minke whale, and Fraser dolphin.

The
Air Force has proposed protecting dolphins and whales by looking for
them on the surface of the water, a ridiculous strategy given that
the waters in the area are more than 15,000 feet deep.

The negative
impact of ocean noise on whales and dolphins has
been well documented. Marine mammals depend upon sound to navigate,
find mates, hunt, and communicate over hundreds of miles. Without
the ability to hear, they are rendered unable to perform the most
basic tasks necessary to their survival. Noise
from military testing, as well as commercial shipping and oil and gas
exploration, has caused trauma, deafness, and led to the mass
beachings and deaths of dolphins and whales around the world.

As
an animal lover, I am deeply saddened that beautiful, intelligent
marine mammals around the world are suffering horrifically because of
noise pollution caused by humanity. Collateral damage to innocent
wildlife should not be considered an acceptable consequence of
military testing. Please
sign this petition urging NOAA-Fisheries to block plans by the U.S.
Air Force that would cause harm to dolphins or whales. For
marine mammals to survive and flourish, we must stop noise pollution
in our oceans. Any testing plans by the military must give meaningful
and effective protection to these magnificent beings.

Rob de Wijk met anti-Chinese propaganda……

Zojuist was Rob de Wijk te horen op Radio1 (vanaf ongeveer 14.40 u.), om daar ‘opheldering’ te geven, over de gespannen situatie tussen China en de VS. De Wijk, een top-lobbyist van het militair-industrieel complex en oorlogshitser de luxe, vertelde hoe fout China bezig is in de (Zuid-) Chinese Zee. China zou veel te grote gebieden claimen in de Chinese Zee.

De Wijk is altijd een groot fan van de VS, dus beschreef hij de VS als slachtoffer en belanghebbende (ha! ha! ha! ha!). Kijk, dat de VS Hawaï als haar grondgebied ziet, vindt de Wijk de normaalste zaak van de wereld…. Om nog maar te zwijgen over alle militaire bases van de VS in het (zee)gebied van de Stille Oceaan, die de VS veelal tegen de wil van de bevolking in, maar met behulp van corrupte politici, door de strot van die bevolking heeft geduwd…. Met deze bases ‘zegt’ de VS in feite tegen andere grootmachten: oprotten, dit is onze militaire invloedssfeer!!!

Ach ja, eens lobbyist van het militair-industrieel complex en de VS………..

Op het Hawaïaanse eiland Kauai, zijn de grote chemische bedrijven bezig, dit eiland te veranderen in de grootste giftbelt ter wereld. Om hun gentech rassen te kunnen  testen, maakt men gebruik van het grote aantal oogsten, die op dit eiland mogelijk zijn. Genetisch gemanipuleerde zaden, die dusdanig veranderd zijn, dat ze grote hoeveelheden gif tolereren, worden daar massaal onderworpen aan zeer grote hoeveelheden gif, zodat de bodem verzadigd is van die troep, maar ook de oppervlakte van het eiland wordt erdoor vervuild, gif dat door diezelfde bedrijven wordt gefabriceerd………

Stop Poisoning Paradise! Stand With Kaua’i in their Battle Against Excessive Pesticide Use

The island of Kaua’i, Hawaii, is a world treasure — ecologically
unique, rich in spirit and culture, and famous through to ancient times
for its dramatic beauty and brave defenders. It is also Ground Zero
in the fight against Chemical Companies and the excessive use of
pesticides in our food, on our lands, and directly on workers and people
in nearby communities.

Dow, DuPont Pioneer, Syngenta and BASF, four of the largest Chemical Companies in the world, have turned parts of Kaua’i into one of the most toxic chemical environments in all of American agriculture.
Exploiting 3-4 growing seasons a year and lax oversight, they

agricultural chemicals in their bid to develop pesticide-tolerant crops

Globally their aim is to increase profits by selling more chemicals and
patented seeds that only work with their chemicals. Locally, the people
and land of Kaua’i and other places around Hawaii are bombarded almost
daily with neurotoxins, carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, and mixed
pesticide-cocktails with unknown and untested impacts.

But the World is Watching. We need to show these
companies that we will not stand by as they exploit people and the land
for their own profits. Sign the pledge today to stand with Kaua’i and
Hawaii in telling the chemical companies to stop poisoning paradise, and
join the global movement to stop them in their drive to hook our food
system on their chemicals.
