G20 doet niets aan de schulden van arme landen bij commerciële banken, terwijl die landen al extra lijden door het Coronavirus

De G20 landen hebben weliswaar besloten
dat zij de schuldenaflossing van ontwikkelingslanden voor 6 maanden
hebben opgeschort, maar doen niets aan de commerciële banken als Goldman Sachs, HSBC en Blackrock, die
totaal onverantwoord geld hebben geleend aan die landen (ofwel op de
pof hebben geleend) en die deze aflossingen opeisen ondanks de Coronacrisis, waardoor deze landen ook financieel veel harder werden getroffen dan welgestelde westerse landen….


Het
lijkt sterk op de smerige spel dat de EU, de Europese Centrale Bank
(ECB) en het IMF speelden met landen als Griekenland, Italië en
Spanje….. Waar Griekenland wel het meest sprekende voorbeeld is. De commerciële banken leenden die landen geld op de pof terwijl een kind
had kunnen weten dat dit spaak zou lopen, alles met medeweten en
toestemming van de Centrale banken van de afzonderlijke EU lidstaten,
zoals De Nederlandse Bank (DNB) onder gezag van CDA oplichter
Wellink…… 

Het
voorgaande uiteraard nadat in 2008 de bankencrisis in volle hevigheid
losbarstte. Het smerige spel bestond eruit dat de bevolking van
de EU-lidstaten in Noordwest-Europa werd voorgehouden dat de EU geld gaf aan de
bevolking van Griekenland (en aan de bevolkingen van de andere schuldenlanden), geld dat door hen middels de belastingen was opgebracht….. Terwijl in werkelijkheid
de banken uit de noordwestelijke EU-lidstaten (inclusief Frankrijk)
het door hen op de pof geleende geld terugkregen van de afzonderlijke
EU-lidstaten, ofwel er ging in feite geen cent naar landen als
Griekenland, dat geld ging rechtstreeks naar de banken die volkomen
onverantwoord geld hadden uitgeleend en die daarvoor gestraft hadden
moeten worden door hen te verstaan te geven dat ze hun geld kwijt
waren….. Zoals dit gaat als een bedrijf failliet gaat en nog
een schuld heeft uitstaan bij een bank, waar andere schuldeisers om wat voor reden dan ook voorgaan op die bank, krijgt deze amper of geen stuiver….. (als er al wat te halen is)

Schandelijk
genoeg gebeurt nu dus hetzelfde als eerder met Griekenland, terwijl het hier gaat om ontwikkelingslanden en dat tijdens de Coronacrisis, waar niet
vergeten moet worden dat grote westerse bedrijven en banken de
corruptie in die landen gebruiken voor eigen gewin en daarmee de
corruptie in die landen in stand houden…… (oh ja en sinds vorige
week weten we officieel dat ook de Nederlandse staat zwaar nalatig is
als het gaat om het bestrijden en strafrechtelijk vervolgen van deze corruptie….*)

G20 fails to release developing world from 'debtors prison', despite suspension | Global Justice Now

Warning
that benefits of debt suspension will flow into coffers of big banks
without stronger action.

WASHINGTON – Reacting to the G20
finance minister’s communique, Nick Dearden, director of Global
Justice Now, said:

 “The G20 are waking up to the
fact that many countries have been confined to a debtors’ prison by
coronavirus, but they need to do more than suspend their sentence.
Rather, they should be tearing down the walls. 
 
“That
means cancelling large quantities of debt, forcing the banks to take
part too, and using their power at the IMF and World Bank to bring
them into the mix as well. Above all, it means changing the wild west
system of debt restructuring so that countries in debt crisis can get
fast, fair and full treatment. 
 
“The ‘common
framework’ in today’s communique could be a stepping stone to a more
comprehensive solution to the deepening global debt crisis, but it
will need to acknowledge the role of reckless lending and the need to
go beyond voluntary measures for the private sector to be a success.
People across the global south understand only too well the glaring
injustices of the international debt system; an unfair system that
Covid-19 has exacerbated to breaking point. The campaign for serious
action for debt justice continues.”

Global Justice Now today
co-released new research showing that major private institutions
including Blackrock, HSBC and Goldman Sachs stand to receive $13
billion in debt payments from lower-income countries in 2020
alone.

Countries including Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal and
Zambia face substantial payments to private creditors which are not
covered by the debt suspension announced by the G20 today. Without
private sector participation, the benefits of the 6-12 month
suspension are likely to flow straight to some of the wealthiest
financial institutions in the world. See

ABN Amro liet onder Zalm witwassen gebeuren dit nog naast het het garant staan voor een oliemaatschappij

ABN Amro onder leiding van VVD topgraaier en commissaris Gerrit Zalm, heeft op meermaals aandringen actie te ondernemen tegen witwassen, geen maatregelen genomen….. Eén en ander blijkt uit het onderzoek van het OM en de FIOD naar witwaspraktijken door ABN Amro…… Uit het boek van 2 FD journalisten over de aanpak van het witwassen door deze in feite nog steeds staatsbank, blijkt dat de bank 2 jaar lang (van 2015 tot 2017) niet heeft gehandeld op aandringen het witwassen te onderzoeken en te stoppen…… 

De zoveelste zeperd van ABN Amro en daar kan ook het volgende aan worden toegevoegd:

DeBeurs.nl bracht vanmorgen het bericht dat ABN Amro een claim heeft ingediend op uitstaande leningen aan een Singaporees oliebedrijf Hin Leong Trading, dit n.a.v. een artikel van Bloomberg…… Dit bedrijf heeft onlangs uitstel van betaling aangevraagd, ofwel het bedrijf is zo goed als failliet…..

ABN Amro heeft Hin Leong Trading een zogenaamde ‘letter of credit’ verstrekt, daarmee gaf ABN Amro extra zekerheid van betaling of levering van goederen….. Het is niet duidelijk over het bedrag dat daarmee is gemoeid en ABN Amro heeft laten weten geen uitspraken te doen over ‘individuele klanten…..’ ha! ha! ha! ha! Nee, we moeten nog even wachten tot er meer bekend wordt gemaakt over het bijzonder domme handelen van ABN Amro!!

Hin Leong Trading heeft zo’n 4 miljard dollar geleend van meer dan 20 Singaporese en internationale banken, zo heeft HSBCde grootste claim uitstaan op dit bedrijf, t.w. 600 miljoen dollar……

Kortom ABN Amro wordt niet alleen vervolgd door het OM en de FIOD, maar kan binnenkort ook een strafrechtelijke vervolging verwachten van haar domme handelen inzake Hin Leong Trading, waar het bedrijf gegarandeerd ook een dikke claim staat te wachten……

Tja, tijdens de bankencrisis stelde de overheid dat banken nooit weer ‘too big to fail’ (TBTF) mochten worden, eerst onder Balkenende 4, beloofd door de 2 ministers van Financiën die in dit kabinet dienden: PvdA sukkel Wouter Bos en CDA plork Jan Kees de Jager, waar de laatste deze functie ook vervulde onder Rutte 1…… ‘Too big to fail’, ofwel als men de grote banken failliet zou laten gaan zou ons land zo goed als failliet gaan, gelul natuurlijk, men had het personeel van de grote banken kunnen aanhouden, waar dezen ingezet konden worden om 2 grote staatsbanken te vormen en daarmee de tegoeden van de bevolking en bedrijven veilig te stellen…. 

In plaats van het voorgaande te doen werd er veel meer geld gestoken in het redden van de banken (het failliet laten gaan en het op poten zetten van een staatsbank voor het volk en één voor bedrijven was veel goedkoper geweest…..)…. Uiteindelijk hebben de Grieken moeten betalen voor het onverantwoorde gedrag van banken om geld te lenen aan Zuid-Europese landen, waarvan een kind had kunnen weten dat deze landen de schulden niet terug konden betalen….. Niet de Grieken kregen geld van landen als Nederland, nee de banken in ons gebied van de EU, die een waardeloos beleid voerden, werden betaald met het zogenaamde geld voor Griekenland…… 

Straks zitten we weer met de gebakken peren, daar ABN Amro en bijvoorbeeld ING al weer zo groot zijn dat ze bij een crisis om kunnen vallen, juist omdat ze vooral in het buitenland weer veel ‘te groot zijn om te failliet te laten gaan’, waar men weigert de bankensector nu eindelijk eens echt goed aan te pakken en zelfs banken failliet te laten gaan (en die crisis komt er gegarandeerd heel snel, gezien de economische toestand door het Coronavirus….)….. Je snapt het al, ook dan mogen wij, de belastingbetalers, opdraaien voor de verliezen….. De bankenbuffer van 3% is veel te laag om bij dreiging van het omvallen van een bank uitkomst te bieden, echte deskundigen stellen dat zelfs een buffer van 30% nog aan de lage kant is…. Onder kabinet Rutte 2 was PvdA hufter en gesel van de Grieken, Jeroen Dijsselbloem minister van Financiën, deze dacht slim te zijn en stelde dat er minstens een buffer van 4% moest worden aangehouden….. ha! ha! ha! ha! ha!  

Het voorgaande geeft nog eens aan dat opvolgende regeringen lak hebben aan de klimaatverandering en de enorme luchtvervuiling die jaarlijks wereldwijd aan honderdduizenden mensen het leven kost, immers waarom hebben deze kabinetten ABN Amro niet gedwongen haar investeringen in de olie-industrie van de hand te doen en nooit weer garant te staan voor deze bedrijven??? Trouwens over die kabinetten gesproken: waarom heeft men de banken na de bankencrisis niet veel beter gecontroleerd??? Ook toezichthouder De Nederlandse Bank onder Klaas Knot is zwaar in gebreke gebleven, immers hoe is het anders mogelijk dat banken als ABN Amro, ING en de Rabobank zich zo schuldig hebben kunnen maken aan witwassen??? (om nog maar te zwijgen over het libor schandaal….)

Toch leuk dat Zalm nog eens heeft laten zien dat de VVD een misdadigerspartij is!!

Britse banken steunen kolenverbranding met 25 miljard pond

Dacht
dak ik uit m’n stoel donderde toen ik gisteren een kop van een
Unearthed artikel las: (de 4 grootste) Britse banken steunen de
kolenindustrie met maar ‘liefst’ 25 miljard pond (ons miljard, dus
Engels biljoen).

Door het
financieren van o.a. nieuwbouw van kolencentrales dragen de banken bij aan
de vernietiging van de aarde zoals wij die kennen en waar de gevolgen van de klimaatverandering intussen al duizenden slachtoffers hebben gemaakt…. Vergeet niet (wat men bij die banken al lang is vergeten) dat wij na het volledig ‘losbarsten’ van de bankencrisis de banken op de been moesten houden met vele miljarden van ons belastinggeld……  

Moet je
nagaan: 4 jaar na het Klimaatakkoord van Parijs, waar ook de
bankwereld beterschap beloofde, dit jammer genoeg onder door henzelf
opgestelde criteria, ofwel geldig tot de deur achter de laatste
klimaatganger in Parijs werd gesloten….. (hetzelfde kan je stellen van de grote oliemaatschappijen, waar Shell het klimaatakkoord van Parijs op 8 punten niet nakomt…..*)

De banken moeten als de oliemaatschappijen dan ook betalen voor de gevolgen van de klimaatverandering die zij met leningen mogelijk hebben gemaakt, sterker nog: als de oliemaatschappijen zouden de grofgraaiers van de banken terecht moeten staan voor het Internationaal Strafhof (ICC) wegens massamoord en grootschalige vernietiging van natuur, plus de vernietiging van roerende en onroerende goederen……..

Moet je nagaan: The Royal Bank of Scotland is in feite een staatsbank, ofwel ook op andere manieren subsidieert de Britse regering het verbranden van steenkool, zoals onze regering dat ook nog steeds doet en dan durft zijne VVD leugenachtige hufterigheid Rutte te zeggen dat Nederland voorop loopt op duurzaam gebied….. ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! Ach ja, eens een leugenaar…….

UK banks’ £25 billion support for global coal

UK
banks have supported companies building new coal plants with
financing worth almost £25 billion since the Paris climate deal,
according to data gathered by environmental organisations Urgewald
and BankTrack and shared with Unearthed.


In
2015, world leaders agreed to ensure finance reduced greenhouse gas
emissions, but new data shows that HSBC, Standard Chartered, Barclays
and Royal Bank of Scotland continued to support firms investing in
coal.


The
data shows that those four banks supported companies with plans to
build new coal plants to the tune of $31.8 billion or £24.7 billion
between 2016 and 2019.


Between
them, these companies plan to build 174 gigawatts of new coal plants,
equivalent to the total operating capacity of the EU and Australia
put together. However, industry data is not yet sufficiently
transparent to calculate how much of the money is used directly for
coal plant construction. 


The
plans include the Adani megamine in Australia, a controversial new
coal plant in Germany and huge coal expansion in Indonesia.


Over
the period, HSBC was the biggest coal financer out of all UK banks,
with its support worth £8.4 billion. This consisted of £2.1 billion
of loans and £6.1 billion of underwriting.


Underwriting
is what banks do when companies issue bonds on the public markets. An
underwriting bank purchases bonds and then sells them on.


Despite
positioning themselves as concerned about climate change Barclays and
Standard Chartered actually increased the amount of support they
provided in the last two years, compared to 2014-2016.


The
figure for Barclays rose from £2.8 billion to £5.8 billion and the
figure for Standard Chartered rose from £2.5 billion to £6.6
billion.


HSBC,
meanwhile, has decreased its support for companies building new coal
plants from £8.7 billion to £6.1 billion.


The
state-owned Royal Bank of Scotland exited the global coal sector last
year, providing no financing at all for companies building new coal
plants from January to September.

Four
years since Paris


In
2015 at the United Nations climate conference in Paris, leaders
signed an agreement including a commitment to “making finance flows
consistent with a pathway towards low greenhouse gas emissions and
climate-resilient development”.


The
UK will next year host next year’s annual climate conference,
billed as the most important since Paris because world leaders are
meant to upgrade pledges made in 2015.


Greig
Aitken, coal campaigner at BankTrack, told Unearthed:
“One year out from the UK’s hosting of the UN Climate Summit, if
Barclays, HSBC and Standard Chartered don’t act rapidly to rein in
their financing of coal expansion companies, the UK government should
take steps or risk turning up in Glasgow with coal dust on their
faces thanks to our big fossil banks.

“Compared
to their European counterparts, UK banks have stubbornly failed for
several years to adequately respond to the worsening climate
emergency by at least introducing policy restrictions to
significantly curb their sponsoring of coal expansion around the
world. Cosmetic policy tweaks no longer cut it.”


The
data, which was gathered from financial databases at Bloomberg and
Refinitiv and from company reporting, is part of a bigger report that
Urgewald and BankTrack plan to publish on the financing of new coal
plants globally. They shared the UK information with Unearthed in
advance of the final report.


It
is based on Urgewald’s list of 258 companies with known coal plant
expansion plans, 51 of which received financial support from UK
banks.


Between
2017 and 2019, the Finnish state-owned energy company Fortum received
more funding from UK banks than any other company with coal expansion
plans. It received £2.5 billion from Barclays, mainly in loans, and
£1.7 billion in loans from Royal Bank of Scotland, which is itself
state-owned.


Fortum
recently agreed to take control of the German energy company Uniper
in a 2.3 billion euro deal, meaning it will take over the company’s
numerous coal plants.


According
to Urgewald’s data, Fortum makes only 5% of its revenue from coal
and only 3% of the power it produces is from coal. However, Uniper is
involved in a controversial plan to build a new coal plant in
Germany.


The
plant, Datteln 4, is controversial because of the German government’s
plan to abandon coal as an energy source by 2038. According to a
report from Reuters, the 1.1 gigawatt plant will be allowed to enter
service despite the government’s commission recommending that no
new coal plants be brought into use.


A
spokesperson for Fortum said: “We don’t invest in Uniper because
of coal but despite coal. Our goal is to create a leader in Europe’s
energy transition. The energy transition will require significant
investments in the coming decades not only in renewables, but also in
gas, energy storage, and other flexibility solutions to provide
security of supply.”


A
Uniper spokesperson said that Fortum’s finances were a matter for
Fortum but added that the Datteln 4 project had not received any
“bilateral loans” from UK banks.


Another
state-owned company is second on the list. Perusahaan Listrik Negara
(PLN), an Indonesian government-owned utility company, received £1.8
billion in support from HSBC and £746m from Standard Chartered.


Coal
plants owned by PLN, amounting to 20 gigawatts, already emit 74
million tonnes of CO2 a year, or around 14% of the country’s total
emissions. It plans to develop another 10 gigawatts of coal plants.

According
to a 2015 report from Greenpeace,
pollution from coal plants has caused the premature deaths of 6,500
people in Indonesia per year. That same report predicted that if
plants currently planned in the country are built, this could rise to
28,300.


Standard
Chartered and Barclays have also provided financial support to the
Indian coal firm Adani. Standard Chartered made a $150m corporate
loan in 2017 and a $600m corporate loan in 2019, while Barclays and
Standard Chartered both underwrote bonds in 2017 and 2019.


The
company is well-known for its mega-mine expansion plans in Australia,
where it is building a massive coal mine. The mine will produce 2.3
billion tonnes of coal over 60 years, according to Adani, making it
one of the largest in the world.


The
role of finance in driving climate change has come under increasing
scrutiny over the last year. In the UK, the issue is of particular
concern given British banks’ outsize influence globally – the UK
banking sector is the largest in Europe and the fourth largest in the
world.


Last
month, Mark Carney, governor of the Bank of England, warned that the
global financial system is backing projects that will raise the
temperature of the planet by more than 4C, far above the 2C limit
pledged in the Paris agreement.


Labour
has promised to give the Bank extra powers to monitor City firms’
progress on carbon emissions.


Banks
have looked to address this issue, introducing restrictions on their
finance policy restrictions in the last two years which have ended
all direct ‘project finance’ to new coal mines and coal plants
globally.


This
data, however, shows that they have continued to use corporate
finance, loaning money to firms involved in coal development and
underwriting loans to those companies.


A
spokesperson for Standard Chartered told Unearthed: “Not
having seen the report or its methodology we can’t comment on the
specific figures, but as you are probably aware we announced
last year that
we will no longer finance new coal power plant projects and we are
revisiting our approach to clients who are dependent on coal for
business revenues (more to come on that later).”


A
spokesperson for Barclays also pointed to the bank’s new policy on
project finance, saying it agrees “with the objective of reducing
financing for coal-powered energy production”.


They
added that they disputed the findings of the report, saying:
“Barclays has comprehensive criteria and controls in place for our
energy related financing, and we firmly believe in supporting the
transition to a low carbon economy.”

An
HSBC spokesperson said: “HSBC recognises the role of the financial
sector in addressing climate change. We do not support new thermal
coal mines and have not financed any new coal fired power plants
anywhere since April 2018.”

Tien bedrijven die Israël helpen bij de massamoord op de Palestijnen

Joe
Catron publiceerde het hieronder opgenomen artikel op MintPress News, ik nam het over van Anti-Media. In zijn artikel schrijft Catron
over de bedrijven die Israël helpen bij haar fascistische
apartheidsbeleid en dan met name bij het geweld de grootschalige terreur tegen de Palestijnse
bevolking in de Gazastrook en op de West Bank, waar Israël vooral in de Gazastrook de ene massamoord na de andere begaat……..

Mij viel vooral Monsanto* op, dat Israël het kankerverwekkende glyfosaat levert waarmee de fascistisch Israëlische apartheidsstaat de Palestijnse akkers van de Gazastrook besproeit in de buurt van de grens met Israël, ook al niets meer of minder dan smerige terreur……. Anders gezegd: Israël besproeit de akkers in feite met een chemisch wapen en dat op het grondgebied van de Palestijnen, zodat de voedselvoorziening van de Palestijnen in hun openluchtgevangenis Gazastrook afhankelijk blijft van o.a. Israëlische import…… Dezelfde akkers worden bij tijd en wijle door Israël gebulldozerd met machines van Caterpillar…….

Uiteraard
worden deze bedrijven ook gefinancierd door banken, jammer dat Catron daarvan niet de namen heeft genoemd. Wel noemt hij de HSBC bank die
grote wapenfabrieken financiert, waaronder die in Israël…….. Deze wapenfabrieken in Israël proberen hun nieuwste wapens in de praktijk uit op Palestijnen……… 

Ook jammer dat Catron Facebook niet noemde, deze organisatie weert Palestijnen al heel lang van haar platform, waar zionisten hun smerige gal wel mogen spuien…..

(MPN) — As
Israeli soldiers gun down unarmed Palestinian demonstrators in the
Great March of Return, their lethal operations depend on an array of
contractors and suppliers, many of them companies based outside
Israel.

“The
Israeli military relies on a network of international companies,
supplying everything from sniper rifles to tear gas, to carry out its
massacres of protesters in Gaza,” Tom Anderson, a researcher
for Corporate
Occupation,
told MintPress
News.
“These companies are knowingly supporting war crimes, and are
complicit in state-orchestrated murder.”

Since
the mobilization began on March 30, Israeli forces have killed 205
Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, the United Nations’ Office for the
Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the Occupied Palestinian
Territory reported on
October 4.

There
have been 21,288 injured, including 5,345 from live ammunition,
resulting in 11,180 hospitalizations. Thirty-eight of the dead and
4,250 of the wounded were children.

A
press release accompanying a September 25 report by the World
Bank warned,
“The economy in Gaza is collapsing,” adding that “the
decade-long blockade is the core issue.”

Corporate
Occupation and the American
Friends Service Committee,
the Boycott,
Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Movement,
and Who
Profits maintain
comprehensive lists of corporations enabling Israel’s crimes
against Palestinians.

Here
are a few of them:

Caterpillar,
Inc.

Caterpillar
is known internationally
for Israel’s use of its bulldozers to demolish Palestinian homes in
the occupied West Bank and inside Israel itself, as well as for its
role in the killing of Rachel Corrie, an International Solidarity
Movement activist from the United States, who was crushed to death by
one of the company’s Israel-operated machines in the southern Gaza
Strip on March 16, 2003. In Gaza, Caterpillar is notorious for
Israel’s deployment of
its equipment to reinforce a military barrier around the Strip, as
well as to level Palestinian farmland inside it.
These leveling operations
both destroy Palestinian agriculture, keeping Gaza a captive market
for Israeli producers, and maintain a clear line of fire for Israeli
soldiers to shoot Palestinians.

Combined
Systems, Inc.

Combined
Systems — a Jamestown, Pennsylvania-based manufacturer owned by
Point Lookout Capital and the Carlyle Group — supplies light
weaponry and security equipment, such as tear gas and flash grenades,
to repressive governments worldwide. In May, Corporate Occupation
researchers spotted an
Israeli vehicle, with police markings but obviously intended for
military use, equipped with the company’s ‘Venom’ tear
gas launcher next to the Gaza barrier.

Ford
Motor Company

While
other manufacturers, like General
Motors,
also provide vehicles used by the Israeli army to deploy its soldiers
along the Gaza barrier, Ford’s are distinctive for their creative
use. In 2003, Israeli vehicle manufacturer Hatehof
began retrofitting Ford
F550 trucks as armored personnel carriers. By 2016, Israel had moved
on to F350s, modified by
Israeli military electronics company Elbit Systems as autonomous
unmanned vehicles capable of remotely controlled fire.

Monsanto*

Along
with herbicides from the Dow Chemical Company and ADAMA Agricultural
Solutions, an Israeli unit of China’s state-owned National Chemical
Corporation (ChemChina), Israel sprays Bayer
subsidiary Monsanto’s notorious Glyphosate (marketed as Roundup), a
known human carcinogen, on Palestinian fields across its military
barrier with Gaza several times annually. As does its deployment of
Caterpillar bulldozers to level the same fields, the aerial
application, conducted by two civilian Israeli companies under
contract to the army, serves both Israeli economic and military
interests — preventing Palestinian self-sufficiency in agriculture,
while allowing its forces to easily detect and fire upon Palestinian
farmers and other civilians using their own land.

G4S
plc

Formerly
one of Israel’s biggest occupation contractors, G4S sold its
major Israeli subsidiary, G4S Israel, in 2016, but kept a
stake in the construction and operation of Policity, Israel’s
privatized national police academy. Israel claims that its police
enjoy civilian status, but routinely deploys them in military
operations against Palestinians in both the West Bank and the Gaza
Strip, including their use of both Combined System’s ‘Venon’
tear-gas launcher and weaponized drones to
repress the Great March of Return.

Hewlett
Packard

Now
three companies with interlocking operations — HP Inc., Hewlett
Packard Enterprise (HPE), and DXC Technology — HP equips the
Israeli military with computers and has undertaken contracts to
“virtualize” IDF operations, starting in 2007 with a pilot
program for the Israeli navy, which enforces the blockade of Gaza.

HSBC
Bank plc

HSBC provides extensive
financing to some of the most notorious military manufacturers in the
world, several of them Israeli.

“HSBC
holds over £800m worth of shares in, and is involved in syndicated
loans worth over £19b to, companies that sell weapons and military
equipment to the Israeli government,” Huda Ammori, campaigns
officer for the Palestine
Solidarity Campaign,
told MintPress.
“These investments include Elbit Systems, Israel’s largest
private security firm, which markets its weapons as ‘field-tested,’
due to them being tested on Palestinian civilians in Gaza.”

A
leading drone manufacturer, Elbit has played a key role in aerial
attacks on the Great March of Return.

Motorola
Solutions Inc.

Motorola provides the
encrypted smartphones the Israeli military uses to deploy soldiers,
as well as radio and communications services for the Israeli police.

Remington

Among
casualties of the Great March of Return, Amnesty
International reports,
some “wounds bear the hallmarks of U.S.-manufactured M24 Remington
sniper rifles shooting 7.62mm hunting ammunition, which expand and
mushroom inside the body,” along with others indicative of Israel
Weapon Industries’ Tavor rifles. “In the United States this is
sold as a hunting rifle to kill deer,” Brian Castner, a weapons
specialist for the human-rights organization, said in
April.

Dipping
Company, LLC

The
White Plains, New York-based food manufacturer, co-owned by PepsiCo
and Israeli foodmaker Strauss, has donated food
packages to the Israeli Army’s Golani Brigade, notorious for its
human-rights abuses in both Gaza and the West Bank.

“We
Must Channel Our Rage”

As
the Great March of Return, now in its 29th week, continues,
participants and supporters say targeting firms complicit in its
repression is one of the most effective means of solidarity.

“We
must channel our rage at Israel’s atrocities into effective actions
to hold Israel accountable,” the BDS National Committee said in
a statement on April 12. “Together, we can escalate Boycott,
Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaigns.”

“Israel
is meeting the Palestinian protesters with live fire, massacring over
190 Palestinians to date,” Ammori told MintPress.
“Israel’s racist discrimination and brutal violence is evident,
and the campaign to end complicity is vital.”

Boycotten die bedrijven!!

Monsanto heeft moeite zich in Armenië te vestigen door de bemoeienis van System of a Down voorman!

Monsanto wil haar tentakels uitspreiden over Armenië en had daarom een evenement georganiseerd in de VS ambassade in de hoofdstad Jerevan. Andere deelnemers waren onder meer: de bank HSBC (Armenië), Valmont (een bedrijf als Monsanto) en het Armeense ministerie van Landbouw.

Uiteraard willen Monsanto en Valmont Armeense grond vervuilen met o.a. hun gepatenteerde zaden en enorme hoeveelheden gif zoals Roundup, met het kankerverwekkende glyfosaat……..

Dergelijke evenementen trekken normaal gesproken weinig of geen aandacht, echter daar heeft één van de oprichters van System of a Down, Serj Tankian, verandering in gebracht. Terecht merkt hij op dat bedrijven als Monsanto verantwoordelijk zijn voor de grote bijensterfte…..*

Vergeet verder niet dat ‘duurzame’ boeren/tuinders die geen gebruik maken van Monsanto zaden, terwijl hun buurman dit wel doet, hun ecologisch vergunning kwijtraken, daar niet alleen het overgewaaid gif hun planten zal bedekken en binnendringen, maar ook de kans levensgroot is dat er Monsanto zaden op hun grond terechtkomen en naast dat zij hun ecologische vergunning kwijtraken, zullen ze in dat geval worden vervolgd door Monsanto voor ‘oneigenlijk gebruik’ van hun zaden……. Meestal trekt Monsanto in dergelijke gevallen  bij de rechter aan het langste eind……..

Na een negatieve rechtelijke uitspraak kunnen de getroffen boeren/tuinders het verder wel vergeten, of anders gezegd: ze zullen daardoor failliet gaan en al menig boer (vooral in arme landen) heeft zich derhalve het leven benomen……. Daarnaast mogen boeren/tuinders die zaden van Monsanto gebruiken, zich niet bezighouden met zaadvermeerdering…. Als dan door omstandigheden de oogsten mislukken, hebben arme boeren geen geld om de zaden voor het volgende seizoen te kopen en gaan ook zij failliet……

Biotech
giant Monsanto may face resistance to expanding their operations into
Armenia after alternative rock musician Serj Tankian publicly
criticized the company’s appearance at a recent conference at the
U.S. embassy in Yerevan, Armenia.

(ANTIMEDIA) Yerevan,
Armenia — On
November 1, the United States Embassy in Yerevan, Armenia, hosted a
business conference aimed at connecting Armenian agriculture
companies with the “expertise, products, and technology” of U.S.
corporations Monsanto and Valmont. According to a press release from
the embassy, the event was organized in partnership with the Armenian
Ministry of Agriculture and HSBC Bank Armenia.

According
to the press release:

“The
conference aimed to strengthen commercial ties between the United
States and Armenia by connecting representatives from American and
Armenian agribusinesses, and by giving American companies the
opportunity to showcase the latest technological advances in the
field.”

Monsanto
and Valmont sent representatives to present their products and
services, as well as to learn about “business opportunities” in
Armenia. The press release also noted that the conference featured
presentations by HSBC Bank Armenia, International Finance Corporation
(IFC), the Center for Agribusiness and Rural Development (CARD), and
Armenian government officials.

Such
a meeting might typically go unnoticed by most of the population of
the U.S. and Armenia. However, the issue garnered attention in
Armenian media due, in part, to the actions of Serj Tankian, a
Lebanese-born Armenian-American musician, political activist, and
founding member of the band System of a Down. “Armenia please
please stay free and clear of Monsanto. There is ample proof that
Monsanto’s sprays have poisoned our environment contributing
drastically to dying off of bees,” Tankian posted on Facebook
on November 2nd.  The comment was likely in reference to
RoundUp, a popular Monsanto-owned insecticide that contains the
controversial ingredient glyphosate. Tankian also said apples in
Armenia taste different than in America due to “thousands
of years of agriculture and cultivation” and warned about the
potential dangers of introducing genetically engineered seeds and
foods into the Armenia.

Armenia please please stay free and clear of Monsanto. There is ample proof that Monsanto’s sprays have poisoned our environment contributing drastically to dying off of bees. Their predatory genetically modified products spell the end of pure organic foods. They are bad for you and taste horrible to say the least. Above all Monsanto is known as an evil corporation here in the US and Europe for all their practices, suing farmers etc. There is no going back from genetically modified products as they cannot be contained. When I’m in Armenia and bite into an apple, it’s pure, crisp and delicious. From thousands of years of agriculture and cultivation. Let it remain so, please. I can’t find apples like that in the US thanks to Monsanto.

On
November 7, Tankian again commented on the issue with a Facebook
post stating,
“Good
job ATP for talking about Monsanto in Armenia.”
He was referencing a statement from the Armenian Tree Project. In the
statement, ATP founder Carolyn Mugar invoked the “Precautionary
Principle” as endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly. The
Precautionary Principle calls for precautionary measures when dealing
with activities that have the potential to raise the threat of harm
to the environment or human health. The
ATP statement called
Monsanto’s seeds “a
threat to biodiversity and native and organic crops”
because of “consolidation
and corporate ownership of seeds.”

ATP
also called attention to Monsanto’s pesticides leading to the
creation of “superweeds” and “superbugs,” which are resistant
to pesticides, leading to an increase in the use of chemicals. In
addition, ATP noted that “Farmers have been pushed out of
business and off the land by corporations like Monsanto due to
corporate control of seeds.” The non-profit also mentioned that
the often touted promise that GMO foods lead to increased yields or
farm profitability is not necessarily true. Finally, the Armenian
Tree Project noted that “the long-term safety of utilizing GMO
technology has not been fully evaluated.”

Tankian’s
Facebook posts went viral across Armenian media, with the Armenian
Weekly, Eurasianet,
and other sites crediting Tankian for sparking negative reactions
from the public. Eurasianet noted
that local activists sent a
letter to
the Armenian government and to U.S. Ambassador to Armenia Richard M.
Mills arguing against the expansion of Monsanto’s business in the
nation. Eurasianet reported:

“Armenia banned the
production of GMOs two years ago but the import of food containing
genetically modified components is allowed if the products are marked
as such. The market is unprotected from the sale of such products.

“In
a recent interview,
Monsanto’s sales manager in the CIS Alexander Zvyagintsev assured
journalists that the company will not offer its Armenian partners the
opportunity to work with genetically modified products such as seeds.
Zvyagintsev claims the company does not allow the use of such items
in countries where it is prohibited.”

Popular
bilingual Armenian news site Asbarez was
also critical of the conference and the welcoming of Monsanto into
Armenia. “We
all want the United States to invest in Armenia and become a conduit
for better economic stability in the country,” Asbarez
wrote.
“But,
companies like Monsanto, whose notorious bullying tactics to force
farmers to conform to is corporate aim to monopolize the agriculture
sector will hinder the growth of the agriculture industry in Armenia
and will have a far-reaching impact on the future of the country’s
productivity and resources.”

Following
the pushback against Monsanto’s appearance, non-profit EVN Report
launched a 10-day
investigation that
included interviews with representatives from Armenia’s
agricultural, international development, public health, and legal
sectors. The EVN Report investigation found that Monsanto has
actually been operating in Armenia for nearly two decades. According
to the report, “the
local distributor of Monsanto seeds in Armenia is a company called
Agroline Limited, which has the exclusive rights to selling seeds
from Dutch-based companies Seminis and De Ruiter Seeds, both bought
out by Monsanto in 2005.”

The
EVN Report could not provide a simple yes or no regarding whether or
not Monsanto’s genetically engineered or modified seeds are being
distributed throughout Armenia.“After conducting intensive
research, speaking with officials from relevant ministries,
specialists in agribusiness, representatives and distributors of
Monsanto products, and others there are more questions than answers,”
the report concluded. Officially, the answer is no, unofficially, no
one knows for sure. The report highlights the ignorance around what
constitutes genetic engineering, hybrid, and traditional seeds.

The
EVN Report also points to the fact that developing nations with
populations that have not been educated about the potential benefits
and dangers of new technology are left to trust politicians and
corporate executives. If the people of Armenia are to have true
sovereignty — if they are to decide what seeds and foods they want
to allow on their land — they must be properly educated. Only then
can they make an informed decision that represents the needs of their
people.

BBC: propaganda-orgaan voor het neoliberalistische beleid van de conservatieven

Gisteren op het blog van Stan van Houcke een artikel van the Canary, dat op 6 mei vorig jaar werd gepubliceerd. Het handelt hier over wie macht uitoefent via de BBC, de publieke Britse omroep, die intussen gerust een gezwel kan worden genoemd, als je alle aftakkingen in het buitenland ziet, zoals die in Canada.

Op dit blog heeft u al vaak kunnen lezen, over de propaganda die de BBC dag in dag uitstort over het Britse publiek, neem de Brexit of de enorme hoeveelheid leugens over de strijd in Aleppo (en het weglaten van feiten, zoals de terreur die de ‘gematigde rebellen’ uitoefende op de bevolking in Oost-Aleppo….)……..

EDITORIAL

The
BBC and its political editor Laura Kuenssberg are under
fire this
week, following local election coverage which has been dismissed as
nothing short of propaganda by people across the country. But how did
we get here?

Who
runs the BBC?

The
current abysmal state of BBC News and Politics makes much more sense
when you see who has been appointed to plot its editorial
course.

The BBC
Trust is
responsible for granting licenses to all BBC outlets and stations,
managing value for money on licence fee payments and ‘the
direction of BBC editorial and creative output’.
The Trust consists of 12 Trustees and is headed by Rona
Fairhead – who
also happens to have been a longtime board member of HSBC bank.

As The
Canary’s James
Wright reported earlier
this year:

Fairhead
has entrenched ties to the Tory government. In fact, she and
Osborne are
old friends.
Fairhead worked
for the
Conservative government as a cabinet office member, until being
appointed by the previous Conservative culture secretary – Sajid
Javid – as the new head of the BBC Trust. She is
still business
ambassador for David Cameron.

Fairhead
has also sat on the board of HSBC directors for a long time. And what
is even more shocking than her other Conservative links are claims
that she was actually appointed chairwoman of the BBC Trust to keep a
lid on Cameron’s involvement in covering up a
£1bn fraudulent HSBC scam on British shoppers.
Whistle-blower Nicholas
Wilson made
various freedom of information requests that confirmed that
Fairhead’s appointment did not follow proper procedure. She was
rushed to the position after the application date closed, with no
mention of her on any contemporary media shortlist.

Her
appointment does not coincide with the normal process, and many
questioned why
a business tycoon was right for the job. What
it did coincide with was
a string of interconnected visits from the BBC, HSBC, the Houses of
Parliament and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to Wilson’s
website where he details the scam and the FCA and Cameron’s
involvement in covering it up.

But
the conflicts of interest do not stop at Fairhead.

The
Director of News and Current Affairs at the BBC, James Harding, is a
former employee of the Murdoch Press. While Editor of The Times
newspaper, he was responsible for exposing
the identity of police blogger NightJack by hacking
the blogger’s email accounts –
which his legal
team then covered up during
a court case against the action. Harding has also gone on the record
as ‘pro
Israel’.

This
is the calibre of the figures responsible for hiring the news teams,
presenters and journalists who will report on matters of hacking,
privacy, and the Middle East.

These
are not trivial conflicts of interests. The two individuals primarily
responsible for driving the News and Politics agenda for the BBC, are
instead driving forward their personal and professional causes –
and the licence fee payer is footing the bill.

What
is the impact on reporting?

These
conflicts of interest affect the reporting of News and Politics at
the BBC in a very real way. In 2013, researchers at Cardiff
University undertook a major
content analysis of
BBC coverage – funded in part by the BBC Trust. They studied the
impartiality of BBC reporting across several areas,
including the Israel-Palestine conflict, the EU, business and
economics, and politics.

The findings revealed
that:

  • Whichever
    party is in power, the Conservative party is granted more air time.

  • On
    BBC News at Six, business representatives outnumbered trade union
    spokespersons by more than five to one (11 vs 2) in 2007 and by 19
    to one in 2012.

  • When
    it comes to the Financial Crisis, BBC coverage was almost
    completely dominated by stockbrokers, investment bankers, hedge fund
    managers and other City voices.     Civil
    society voices     or commentators who
    questioned the benefits of having such a large finance sector were
    almost completely absent from coverage.

On
top of this, BBC reporting of Israel-Palestine has been woefully
partisan – and in 2013, we found out one reason why.

In
2013, a devastating report by Electronic
Intifada,
revealed that Raffi
Berg,
online editor for BBC News, was instructing journalists to skew
reports on Israel-Palestine in favour of Israel. While hundreds of
Palestinians were losing their lives during Israel’s eight day
assault on the Gaza strip in 2012, Berg was emailing
journalists with ‘guidance’ to maintain a pro-Israel tone in
their reports.

one, he asked BBC colleagues to word their stories in a way which
does not blame or “put undue emphasis” on Israel for starting the
prolonged attacks. Instead, he encouraged journalists to promote the
Israeli government line that the “offensive” was “aimed at
ending rocket fire from Gaza.”

This
was despite the fact that Israel broke a ceasefire when it attacked
Gaza on 14 November, a ceasefire which the Palestinians had been
observing — firing no rockets into Israel.

In
a second email, sent during the same period, Berg told BBC
journalists:

“Please
remember, Israel doesn’t maintain a blockade around Gaza. Egypt
controls the southern border.”

He
omitted to mention that the United Nations views Israel as the
occupying power in Gaza and has called on Israel to end its siege of
the Strip. Israel’s refusal to do so is a violation of UN Security
Council Resolution 1860.”

Berg
is still in his role.

All
that’s left is propaganda

Recently,
these two vested interests – pro-neoliberalism and pro-Israel –
converged on an area of common interest: opposition to Jeremy Corbyn.

This
united bitter Blairites, Conservatives and pro-Israel groups – who
ran perhaps the most
toxic smear campaign against
the Labour party and its leader in living memory. In the run up to
the local elections on May 5, the headlines across the BBC and wider
media’s flagship television and radio programs was not the 1
million people in
the UK reliant on food banks to eat, but the intrigue of the smear
campaign.

Prior
to the elections, the reporting by Kuenssberg was dominated almost
exclusively by claims of crisis within Labour, providing a platform
to a minority of bitter Blairites, and applying pressure on Corbyn to
stand aside – or at the very least prepare to.

On
Friday morning – when Corbyn’s vote had not collapsed, but
increased, compared to Miliband’s general election performance of
2015 – there was no apology for the wrongful prediction.
Instead, the narrative wheeled on regardless. While the SNP lost
their majority in Scotland, and Labour advanced in England and Wales
– this was the BBC website’s response.

The
situation brings to mind the moment when the BBC’s Andrew Marr
interviewed Noam Chomsky about the role of the mainstream media as a
propaganda service. Chomsky was discussing the role of
self-censorship by journalists, and Marr repudiated the claim,
asking:

“How
can you know if I am self-censoring?” Arguing he had never been
censored, or told what to think.

Chomsky
calmly responds, as if he were explaining the non-existence of Santa
Claus to a child:

“I’m
sure you believe everything you’re saying, but what I’m saying is
that if you believed something different, you wouldn’t be sitting
where you’re sitting.”

And
therein lies the rub with the role of the BBC, and the wider
mainstream media, as a vehicle by which to advance the causes of
those who own and run them. There is a monopoly of wealth and power
in our society which translates directly into a monopoly of the
media. The result is a staggering lack of diversity and pluralism of
voices and opinions in the mainstream space. The media has
become little more than a monotonous, relentless monologue – when
as a country, and a world, we need to be having a conversation.
