is enorm.

How
the United Nations Supports the American Empire
For
decades the American Right has decried the U.N. for encroaching on
American sovereignty, but the truth is that the U.N. is a chief U.S.
accomplice in violating the sovereignty of other nations, notes J.P.
Sottile.
(CN) — President
Trump opened his big United Nations week … and his famous mouth …
with a predictable
plug for
one of his properties and some
playful glad-handing with
French President Emmanuel Macron. Trump also scolded the
U.N.’s unwieldy scrum for “not living up to its potential.” He
made a passing reference to the U.N.’s wasteful use of American
money. And he called for “reform” of
the much-maligned international
forum.
It
was a stolid
prelude to
what will no doubt be “must-see” TV when he speaks to the UN
General Assembly on
Tuesday about North Korea and Iran. And it was a far cry from the way
America’s leading “America Firster” spent the
campaign lamenting
how unfair the U.N.
is to the poor schlemiel we call Uncle Sam.
He
is likely to use his speech to throw a little bit of that same red
meat to his base, but his call for reform falls well short of
what his
supporters want …
which is an abrupt end of U.S. involvement in the international body.
They are motivated by a grab-bag of reasons that point to the U.N.
being a threat to their guns, their bank accounts and their God-given
freedom.
Oddly
enough, these conspiratorial narratives have been around for decades
and they mostly center on a grand plan by U.N. elites to abscond
American sovereignty and dissolve the U.S. into a U.N.-led world
government. And the evidence of this is the way the U.N. harasses and
restricts Uncle Sam while siphoning-off America’s wealth. At least,
that’s what some think.
Most
ominously, many object to the way U.N. funds are being used to
quietly deploy gun-grabbing
U.N. soldiers in
advance of the
big takeover.
But like so much of Trump’s intoxicating
irredentism …
this is a grievance more likely rooted in a three-day meth bender in
a Tallahassee trailer park than it is from shocking evidence gathered
from well-traveled observation. It’s paranoia. But really, it’s
worse than that.
Why?
Because the U.N. has basically been the complete opposite of what its
angriest critics claim. It is not out to get the U.S. Rather, it has
largely been America’s tool since its inception and, in particular,
it has repeatedly covered Uncle Sam’s overly-exposed butt as he
(a.k.a. “the royal we”) has gone around the world on a three
decade-long military bender since the end of the Cold War.
Yes,
the Gulf War was U.N. approved and the whole world got behind it
because (April
Glaspie’s backstory notwithstanding)
the prima
facie case
was strong and it was a fairly clear-cut example of unwarranted
aggression. That was an easy call.
Global
Violence
But
since then, the calls have been nothing short of murky as the U.S.
has bombed and droned and deployed and invaded and covertly-acted and
regime-changed all around the globe. And the unspoken truth is that
the United Nations has been America’s all-too silent partner as
Uncle Sam traipsed around the planet with a loaded gun, remote
control assassination machines and paper-thin rationales for
intervention.
Although
the U.N. occasionally puts a bug up Israeli Prime Minister
Bibi Netanyahu’s ass on the issue of the slow-motion ethnic
cleansing in the West Bank … what other issue is there where the
U.N. has taken a real stand against the U.S. or U.S. policy
objectives?
Where
is the U.N.’s punishment for being lied to by then-Secretary of
State Colin Powell? And where is the punishment for destroying
a bystander nation under false pretenses? Where is the punishment for
Abu Ghraib or Gitmo?
Where
is the punishment for America’s summary execution of “suspected
militants” around the Muslim world simply because they are of
“military age” and in the wrong place at the right time … and
for the CIA, it is always the right time to kill a suspect no matter
how wrong the place many be. And where is the condemnation of
America’s destabilizing role as the world’s
leading supermarket of military hardware?
How
about mounting civilian causalities from an ever-widening widening
bombing campaign? The U.N. can say the killings are “unacceptable,”
but does it really matter if there is no sanction? There haven’t
been any sanctions after children were killed in a “U.S.-backed
raid”
in Somalia. Go figure, right?
Or
what about America’s complicity in the catastrophe of Yemen? Where
are those sanctions? And what exactly has the U.N. done to punish any
number of extra-legal maneuver by a succession of American presidents
over the course of the “Global War on Terror”? The simple answer
is nothing.
Instead,
the Secretary General is largely beholden to the disproportionate
influence of the United States. The Security Council’s agenda is
basically set by the United States … and that’s particularly true
since the Soviet Union collapsed. At the same time, the U.N.’s
occasionally contentious debates do little more than offer the
imprimatur of international approbation or well-noted disdain despite
the functionally inconsequential nature of those debates.
A
Fig Leaf for Empire
Either
way it is a win for Uncle Sam because the presence of a neutered
United Nations provides the United States with a fig leaf just big
enough to cover the dangly parts of America’s otherwise naked
empire.
The
money that does go from the U.S. Treasury into the minutia around the
margins … like UNESCO programs and United Nations Development
Program (UNDP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) and all the
other little crumbs that get thrown around the world … these are
payoffs. This is what the world gets for mostly keeping its mouth
shut in the face of America’s globe-spanning empire. The tiny
amount of aid that trickles down past the bureaucracy … much like
the bureaucracy itself … is not an example of America “getting
played” by wasteful foreigners with hidden agendas. This is America
paying to play the world like organ grinder with a hurdy-gurdy
monkey.
Even
more amazingly, the U.S. wants to deny these nations the only real
insurance policy against U.S.-led regime change. And why is that?
Because there ain’t a Curveball’s chance
in Hell that the U.N. will ever be able to stop Uncle Sam from
marching where he wants, when he wants and for whatever reason he
wants to cook-up. That’s a historically
provable fact.
The
only real check on U.S. power is the ability of an asymmetrical power
to go nuclear. And let’s admit it, they are ALL asymmetrical powers
when compared to America’s gargantuan, trillion-dollar
national security beast.
And this is why the U.N.’s “partnership” with
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is the only U.N.-associated
agency that really matters. They can’t do much, but they can throw
a wrench into another WMD snipe hunt … like
they are doing now with the Iran Nuclear Deal.
But
like it was tested by Team Bush, the IAEA is going to be tested again
as Trump and Netanyahu make
their bogus case …
without a hint of irony … that Iran is the world’s greatest
threat. But that’s really just par for a course that’s riddled
with falsified flags haphazardly stuck into the shallow holes of a
back nine that’s actually been built by and for a club-wielding
Uncle Sam.
A
Cult of Grievance
And
therein lies the truly pernicious part of the Trumped-up case against
the U.N. … because, like so much of America’s growing cult of
grievance, it reflects an ever-widening gap between America’s
stated ideals and its self-serving behavior around the world.
As
we are learning almost daily, Americans tried to square that circle
by electing a profligate liar who fully embodies America’s
insatiable desire to take credit, particularly where none is due …
and to outsource the blame to scapegoats like the U.N., particularly
when the only alternative is a long look into the mirror.
And
in the case of the U.N., that projected guilt is in spite of the fact
that it is often tasked with quietly cleaning up some of the
collateral damage wrought by their main accuser. They just have to do
so without any real power or the funds to do the job. That’s the
simple truth you won’t hear in Trump’s speech … or any speech,
for that matter.
It’s
the fact that the U.N.’s meager amount of “wasteful spending”
doesn’t even begin to cover the cost of doing business when your
business depends of paying the world to look the other way while you
get away with murder.

Hoorde e.e.a. gistermiddag op BBC World Service.
The
most horrifying truth about Trump’s UN speech was revealed by what
he chose not to say [VIDEO]
US
President Donald Trump gave his first speech to
the UN General Assembly (UNGA) on 19 September 2017. He made frequent
references to ‘world peace’, and was critical of many countries
and regimes around the world. But it was what he didn’t say, and
the countries that he didn’t attack, that was most revealing –
and worrying.
The
‘strongest military ever’
Trump bragged that
the US “will be spending almost $700bn on our military and
defence”; and that “our military will soon be the strongest it
has ever been”. He also praised America’s
supposed history of not trying to “impose our way of life on
others”. And he claimed the
US is “guided by outcomes, not ideologies”.
The UNGA is
assembled from all 193 members. And it is the only UN organ where
each member nation has a vote. Speaking to representatives from these
countries, Trump mentioned ‘sovereignty’
(a state’s authority to govern itself) on numerous occasions. But
as he continued, it became increasingly clear that he was not
referring to all UN member states.
Trump spoke,
for example, of “small regimes” that the “righteous” needed
to “confront”. And the list of US ‘enemies’ began to flow.
And despite his references to respecting the sovereignty of other
nations, he went on to make threats and call for regime changes
around the world.
‘Total
destruction’
As The
Canary has reported,
tensions between the US and North Korea have been rising. And Trump’s
latest rhetoric will do little to ease diplomatic relations. Not
least because he said:
The
United States has great strength and patience, but if it is forced to
defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally
destroy North Korea.
While
the issue of sanctions for
North Korea is far from simple, and there was no mention of
the billions of
dollars the US will make selling weapons to South Korea, the threat
of ‘total destruction’ is unlikely to help anyone.
Hypocrisy
The
US President then turned his attentions to Iran, calling it
a “murderous regime” which “masks a corrupt dictatorship behind
the false guise of a democracy”.
As The
Canary has reported,
Trump has been ramping up
tensions with Iran since he came to power:
But
not because of democracy or human rights. Instead, his hostility is
largely because Iran’s regional enemies, Saudi
Arabia and Israel,
are US allies; because there’s a barelyreported conflict
occurring over oil pipelines in the Middle East; and because Iran
does not bend
easily to
America’s will.
Although
both Iran and Saudi
Arabia have
equally poor human rights records,
for example, Trump made no criticism at all of Saudi Arabia. In fact,
he claimed that
Iran had “fuel[ed] Yemen’s civil war”, while
completely ignoring Saudi Arabia’s key role – and
alleged war
crimes –
in the Yemeni conflict.
Nor
did Trump mention the ongoing atrocities committed
by Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. So it comes as no
surprise that, since Trump’s speech, Israel’s Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu has said:
In
over 30 years in my experience with the UN, I never heard a bolder or
more courageous speech.
Trump
also criticised Iran
for ‘restricting internet access’, ‘shooting unarmed student
protesters’, and ‘imprisoning political reformers’. But there
was no mention of US allies like Turkey which
have reportedlycommitted
the same abuses.
Guided
by outcomes, not ideologies? Really?
Trump
then got ideological. He first targeted Cuba,
calling it a “destabilizing regime”; even though Cuba has
recently helped Colombia
to end its decades-long civil war.
He
also called Venezuela’s
democratically elected government a “socialist dictatorship”,
saying its people were “starving”. But while trying to score
political points over Venezuela –
an oil-rich nation
which the US has long sought to manipulate by pushing large amounts
of money into
opposition hands, Trump essentially ignored the widespread famine
across Africa that is also deeply rooted in political issues;
a crisis that now threatens over 20
million people and
which Oxfam has called the
“largest hunger emergency in the world”.
“From
the Soviet Union to Cuba to Venezuela, wherever true socialism or
communism has been adopted, it has delivered anguish and devastation
and failure”.
Apart
from his inaccurate comparison of socialism and ‘communism’, Trump
also failed to mention China; a nominally communist country which
some forecast will
overtake the US as the world’s biggest economy in the coming years.
Perhaps Trump’s silence had something to do with his recent trade
deal with Beijing?
A
dangerous rant, not a speech…
Trump’s
UN rant about the countries he didn’t like wasn’t surprising. But
it was what he didn’t say that was most revealing – and
dangerous. For example, there was no mention of:
The
alleged ethnic
cleansing of
Rohingya Muslims in Burma (Myanmar), which has forced 400,000
refugees to
flee the country in recent weeks.
The
fact that US authorities have reportedly killed around
100 civilians a
month so far in 2017.
The
alleged war crimes in Yemen of
the Saudi Arabian dictatorship (a Western ally heavily linked
to terrorism).
The
alleged war
crimes in
both Turkey and Syria of the increasingly authoritarian Turkish
regime of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan (and its
alleged links to
terrorism).
The
fact that US ally Honduras (where US officials allegedly helped to
install a pro-US regime through a 2009 coup)
has one of the highest murder rates in
the world.
Essentially,
Trump revealed in his speech a belief in the sovereignty of countries
that are US allies; and a belief in regime change in countries that
are not US allies. He also showed that he is perfectly happy to
exploit human rights abuses for his own political benefit, as long as
it’s not America’s friends committing those abuses. It was not a
speech about peace or human rights. It was Trump laying out his
hypocritically aggressive politics for the whole world to see.

staatsgrepen pleegde, o.a. tegen Iran (destijds Perzië), Congo, Chili en Brazilië.
Happy
Birthday CIA: 7 Truly Terrible Things the Agency Has Done in 70 Years
(ANTIMEDIA) — On
Monday, President Trump tweetedbirthday
wishes to the Air Force and the CIA. Both
became officialorganizations
70 years ago on September 18, 1947, with the implementation of the
National Security Act of 1947.
After
spending years as a wartime intelligence agency called the Office of
Strategic Services, the agency was solidified as a key player in the
federal government’s operations with then-President Harry Truman’s
authorization.
In
the seventy years since, the CIA has committed a wide variety of
misdeeds, crimes, coups, and violence. Here are seven of the worst
programs they’ve carried out (that are known to the public):
1.
Toppling governments around the world —
The CIA is best known for its first coup, Operation Ajax, in 1953,
in which it ousted the democratically elected leader of Iran,
Mohammed Mossadegh, reinstating the autocratic Shah, who favored
western oil interests. That operation, which the CIA now admits to
waging with British intelligence, ultimately resulted in the 1979
revolution and
subsequent U.S. hostage crisis. Relations between the U.S. and Iran
remain strained to this day, aptly described by the CIA-coined term
“blowback.”
But
the CIA has had a hand in toppling a
number of other democratically elected governments, from Guatemala
(1954) and the Congo (1960) to the Dominican Republic (1961), South
Vietnam (1963), Brazil (1964), and Chile (1973). The CIA has aimed to
install leaders who appease American interests,
often empowering oppressive, violent
dictators.
This is only a partial list of countries where the CIA covertly
attempted to exploit and manipulate sovereign nations’ governments.
Operation
Paperclip —
In one of the more bizarre CIA plots, the agency and other
government departments employed Nazi scientists both within and
outside the United States to gain an advantage over the
Soviets. As summarized by NPR:
“The
aim [of Operation Paperclip] was to find and preserve German weapons,
including biological and chemical agents, but American scientific
intelligence officers quickly realized the weapons themselves were
not enough.
“They
decided the United States needed to bring the Nazi scientists
themselves to the U.S. Thus began a mission to recruit top Nazi
doctors, physicists and chemists — including Wernher von Braun, who
went on to design the rockets that took man to the moon.”
They
praised the book’s historical accuracy, noting “that the
Launch Operations Center at Cape Canaveral, Florida, was headed by
Kurt Debus, an ardent Nazi.” They acknowledged that “General
Reinhard Gehlen, former head of Nazi intelligence operations against
the Soviets, was hired by the US Army and later by the CIA to operate
600 ex-Nazi agents in the Soviet zone of occupied Germany.”
Remarkably,
they noted that Jacobsen “understandably questions the morality
of the decision to hire Nazi SS scientists,” but praise her for
pointing out that it was done to fight Soviets. They also made sure
to add that the Soviets hired Nazis, too, apparently justifying their
own questionable actions by citing their most loathed enemy.
Operation
CHAOS —
The FBI is widely known for its COINTELPRO schemes
to undermine communist
movements in the 1950s and anti-war, civil rights,
and black
power movements
in the 1960s, but the CIA has not been implicated nearly as deeply
because, technically, the CIA cannot legally engage in domestic
spying. But that was of little concern to President Lyndon B.
Johnson as opposition to the Vietnam war grew. According to
former New
York Times journalist
and Pulitzer Prize-winner Tim Weiner, as documented in his extensive
CIA history, Legacy
of Ashes,
Johnson instructed then-CIA Director Richard Helms to break the law:
“In
October 1967, a handful of CIA analysts joined in the first big
Washington march against the war. The president regarded protesters
as enemies of the state. He was convinced that the peace movement was
controlled and financed by Moscow and Beijing. He wanted proof. He
ordered Richard Helms to produce it.
“Helms
reminded the president that the CIA was barred from spying on
Americans. He says Johnson told him: ‘I’m quite aware of that.
What I want for you is to pursue this matter, and to do what is
necessary to track down the foreign communists who are behind this
intolerable interference in our domestic affairs…’”
Helms
obeyed. Weiner wrote:
“In
a blatant violation of his powers under the law, the director of
central intelligence became a part-time secret police chief. The CIA
undertook a domestic surveillance operation, code-named Chaos. It
went on for almost seven years… Eleven CIA officers grew long hair,
learned the jargon of the New Left, and went off to infiltrate peace
groups in the United States and Europe.”
According
to Weiner, “the agency compiled a computer index of 300,000
names of American people and organizations, and extensive files on
7,200 citizens. It began working in secret with police departments
all over America.” Because they could not draw a “clear
distinction” between the new far left and mainstream opposition to
the war, the CIA spied on every major peace organization in the
country. President Johnson also wanted them to prove a connection
between foreign communists and the black power movement. “The
agency tried its best,” Weiner noted, ultimately noting that
“the CIA never found a shred of evidence that linked the leaders
of the American left or the black-power movement to foreign
governments.”
Infiltrating
the media — Over the years, the CIA has successfully
gained influence in the news media, as well as popular media like
film and television. Its influence over the news began almost
immediately after the agency was formed. As Weiner explained, CIA
Director Allen Dulles established firm ties with newspapers:
“Dulles
kept in close touch with the men who ran the New York Times, The
Washington Post, and the nation’s leading weekly magazines. He
could pick up the phone and edit a breaking story, make sure an
irritating foreign correspondent was yanked from the field, or hire
the services of men such as Time’s Berlin bureau chief and
Newsweek’s man in Tokyo.”
He
continued:
“It
was second nature for Dulles to plant stories in the press. American
newsrooms were dominated by veterans of the government’s wartime
propaganda branch, the Office of War Information…The men who
responded to the CIA’s call included Henry Luce and his editors at
Time, Life, and Fortune; popular magazines such as Parade, the
Saturday Review, and Reader’s Digest; and the most powerful
executives at CBS News. Dulles built a public-relations and
propaganda machine that came to include more than fifty news
organizations, a dozen publishing houses, and personal pledges of
support from men such as Axel Springer, West Germany’s most
powerful press baron.”
The
CIA’s influence had not waned by 1977 when journalist Carl
Bernstein reported on
publications with CIA agents in their employ, as well as “more
than 400 American journalists who in the past twenty five years
have secretly carried out assignments for the Central Intelligence
Agency.”
The
CIA has also successfully advised
on and influenced numerous
television shows, such
asHomeland and 24 and films like Zero
Dark Thirty and Argo,
which push narratives that ultimately favor the agency. According to
Tricia Jenkins, author of The
CIA in Hollywood: How the Agency Shapes Film & Television, a
concerted agency effort began in the 1990s to counteract negative
public perceptions of the CIA, but their influence reaches back
decades. In the 1950s, filmmakers produced films for the
CIA,
including the 1954 film adaptation of George Orwell’s Animal
Farm.
Researchers
Tom Secker and Matthew Alford, whose work has been published in
the American
Journal of Economics and Sociology,
say their recent Freedom of Information Act requests have shown that
the CIA — along with the military — have influenced over
1,800 films and television shows, many of which have nothing to do
with CIA or military themes.
Drug-induced
Mind control –
In the 1950s, the CIA began experimenting with drugs to determine
whether they might be useful in extracting information.
As Smithsonian
Magazine has noted of
the MKUltra project:
“The
project, which continued for more than a decade, was originally
intended to make sure the United States government kept up with
presumed Soviet advances in mind-control technology. It ballooned in
scope and its ultimate result, among other things, was illegal drug
testing on thousands of Americans.”
Further:
“The
intent of the project was to study ‘the use of biological and
chemical materials in altering human behavior,’ according
tothe
official testimony of CIA director Stansfield Turner in 1977. The
project was conducted in extreme secrecy, Turner said, because of
ethical and legal questions surrounding the program and the negative
public response that the CIA anticipated if MKUltra should become
public.
“Under
MKUltra, the CIA gave itself the authority to research how drugs
could:’ ‘promote the intoxicating effects of alcohol;’ ‘render
the induction of hypnosis easier;’ ‘enhance the ability of
individuals to withstand privation, torture and coercion;’ produce
amnesia, shock and confusion; and much more. Many of these questions
were investigated using unwitting test subjects, like drug-addicted
prisoners, marginalized sex workers and terminal cancer patients–
‘people who could not fight back,’ in
the words ofSidney
Gottlieb, the chemist who introduced LSD to the CIA.”
Further,
as Weiner noted:
“Under
its auspices, seven prisoners at a federal penitentiary in Kentucky
were kept high on LSD for seventy-seven consecutive days. When the
CIA slipped the same drug to an army civilian employee, Frank Olson,
he leaped out of the window of a New York Hotel.”
Weiner
added that senior CIA officers destroyed “almost all of the
records” of the programs, but that while the “evidence that
remains is fragmentary…it strongly suggests that use of secret
prisons for the forcible drug-induced questioning of suspect agents
went on throughout the 1950s.”
Years
later, the CIA would be accused of distributing crack-cocaine into
poor black communities, though this is currently less substantiated
and supported mostly
by accounts of those who claim to have been involved.
Brutal
torture tactics —
More recently, the CIA was exposed for
sponsoring abusive, disturbing terror tactics against detainees at
prisons housing terror suspects. An extensive 2014 Senate report
documented agents committing sexual abuse, forcing detainees to
stand on broken legs, waterboarding them so severely it sometimes
led to convulsions, and imposing forced rectal feeding, to name a
few examples. Ultimately, the agency had very little actionable
intelligence to show for their torture tactics but lied to
suggest they did, according to the torture report. Their torture
tactics led the
International Criminal Court to suggest the CIA, along with the U.S.
armed forces, could be guilty of war crimes for their abuses.
7. Arming radicals — The CIA has a long habit of arming
radical, extremist groups that view the United States as enemies. In
1979, the CIA set out to support Afghan rebels in their bid to
defeat the Soviet occupation of the Middle Eastern country. As
Weiner wrote, in 1979, “Prompted by Zbigniew Brzezinski,
President Carter signed a covert-action order for the CIA to provide
the Afghan rebels with medical aid, money, and propaganda.”
As
Weiner detailed later in his book:
“The
Pakistani intelligence chiefs who doled out the CIA’s guns and
money favored the Afghan factions who proved themselves most capable
in battle. Those factions also happened to be the most committed
Islamists. No one dreamed that the holy warriors could ever turn
their jihad against the United States.”
Though
some speculate the CIA directly armed Osama bin Laden, that is yet to
be fully proven or admitted. What is clear is that western
media revered him
as a valuable fighter against the Soviets, that he arrived to
fight in Afghanistan in1980, and that al-Qaeda emerged from the
mujahideen, who were beneficiaries of the CIA’s program. Stanford
University has noted that Bin
Laden and Abdullah Azzam, a prominent Palestinian cleric,
“established
Al Qaeda from the fighters, financial resources, and training and
recruiting structures left over from the anti-Soviet war.”
Much of those “structures” were provided by the agency.
Intentionally or not, the CIA helped fuel the rise of the terror
group.
Weiner
noted that as the CIA failed in other countries like Libya, by the
late 1980s “Only the mujahideen, the Afghan holy warriors, were
drawing blood and scenting victory. The CIA’s Afghan operation was
now a $700-million-dollar-a-year-program” and represented 80%
of the overseas budget of the clandestine services. “The CIA’s
briefing books never answered the question of what would happen when
a militant Islamic army defeated the godless invaders of
Afghanistan,” though Tom Twetten, “the number two man in
the clandestine service in the summer of 1988,” was tasked with
figuring out what would happen with the Afghan rebels. “We don’t
have any plan,” he concluded.
Apparently
failing to learn their lesson, the CIA adopted nearly the exact same
policy in Syria decades later, arming what they called “moderate
rebels” against the Assad regime. Those groups
ultimately aligned with
al-Qaeda groups. One CIA-backed faction made headlines last year
for beheading a
child (though President Trump cut off the CIA program in June, the
military continues to
align with “moderate” groups).
Unsurprisingly,
this list is far from complete. The CIA has engaged in a wide variety
of extrajudicial
practice,
and there are likely countless transgressions we have yet to learn
about.
As
Donald Trump cheers the birthday of an agency he himself
once criticized,
it should be abundantly clear that the nation’s covert spy agency
deserves scrutiny and skepticism — not celebration.
Walgelijk!!!
The
US Air Force Dropped More Than 500 Bombs on Afghanistan Last Month
(ANTIWAR.COM) — Even
before President Trump made his late-August speech announcing the
escalation of the Afghan War, the war has been dramatically
escalating by several metrics. Today, Central Command issued new
figures underscoring that with respect to airstrikes in Afghanistan.
In
the month of August, the US Air Force dropped
more than 500 bombs in Afghanistan,
which officials were quick to note was the single highest month of
bombs dropped in five years, going all the way back to 2012.
It’s
also the biggest of the year, obviously, but 2017 in general has been
a massive escalation, with over 2,000 bombs dropped this year, which
is already more than double the entirety of 2016, with four more
months to go.
US
pilots in Afghanistan have said that they expect
an increase in activity throughout the rest of the year,
with more troops coming to the country, and with more territory
falling to the Taliban, it’s likely that the US will rely
increasingly on airstrikes to try to slow the rate of loss.
Warning
of ‘Planetary Catastrophe,’ Putin Joins Calls for Diplomacy With
North Korea
“There
is no other way to solve the North Korean nuclear issue, save that of
peaceful dialogue.”
(COMMONDREAMS) — As
tensions continue to flare following North Korea’s claim Sunday
that it successfully tested a hydrogen bomb capable of being placed
on an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), Russian President
Vladimir Putin on Tuesday joined
urgent calls for
deescalation and diplomacy, deeming the military option “a dead
end.”
“Ramping
up military hysteria in such conditions is senseless,”
Putin told reporters
at the end of the 2017 BRICS Summit in Xiamen, China.
“It
could lead to a global, planetary catastrophe and a huge loss of
human life,” Putin concluded. “There is no other way to solve the
North Korean nuclear issue, save that of peaceful dialogue.”
Putin
went on to argue that U.S. interventions in Iraq and Libya have
convinced Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, that nuclear weapons
are a necessary deterrent.
The
Russian president’s comments come as U.S. President Donald Trump
continues to insist that “all options are on the table” when it
comes to North Korea—a position echoed by U.S. Defense Secretary
James Mattis, who warned Sunday
of a “massive military response” if North Korea continues to
threaten the U.S. and its allies.
On
Monday, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said Monday
during an emergency meeting of the National Security Council that the
Kim Jong-un regime is “begging for war,” adding:
“There
is no more road left” for diplomacy.
Activists
and analysts have insisted that this is far from the case, and that
diplomacy is the only way to avoid a “nuclear
nightmare.”
“The
best option to stop North Korea’s nuclear weapons program are
political talks,” concluded Paul
Kawika Martin, senior director of policy and political affairs at
Peace Action. “Clearly bloviating and sanctions are failing.”
The
Ploughshares Fund, an anti-nuclear weapons group,
agreed, declaring Sunday
that “the case for diplomacy is overwhelming.”
Your
Guide to Avoiding Internet Censorship of Independent News Journalism
There
are lots of good strategies for beating both corporate and government
Internet censors and snoops. These range from alternatives to Google,
Yahoo, Microsoft, Facebook and Twitter — to direct subscriptions to
authors and pubs — to setting up your own VPN. All are worth the
effort.
(MPN) — While Google’s
Information Age dominancehas
long been recognized to have some unsavory consequences, the massive
technology corporation has, in recent months, taken to directly
censoring content and traffic to a variety of independent media
outlets across the political spectrum — essentially muting the
voices of any site or author who does not toe the establishment line.
This
new offensive has coincided with Google efforts to clamp down on
“fake news” and “extremist” content, which – on its
subsidiary, YouTube – led to the
categorical blocking of
videos portraying war crimes and other disturbing events of the
Syrian conflict and Israel’s occupation of Palestine. Other
independent media figures, such as Luke
Rudowski and Carey Wedler,
on the popular video streaming service, saw many
of their videos demonetized.
Though
the crackdown on YouTube was more obvious, the Google search engine –
the most popular in the world – is now burying or blocking
independent media sites from its search results.
Conservatives have
long claimed that
Google was selectively targeting their content due to the personal
political bias of the company’s executives — but now, since
Google announced its new guidelines, numerous progressive,
transparency, and anti-war websites that act as watchdogs to the
establishment have seen their traffic diminish substantially.
Counterpunch,
World Socialist Website, MintPress News, Democracy Now, American
Civil Liberties Union and Wikileaks are just
a handful of
the sites that have seen massive drops in their returns from Google
searches. The World Socialist Website alone experienced a 67 percent
decrease in returns from Google following the implementation of
Google’s new algorithm targeting so-called “fake news.”
MintPress News, however, has suffered the steepest decline, having
seen a 76 percent decrease in traffic from Google since the new
algorithm was put into effect.
Google
has its reasons for choosing to censor viewpoints that clash with or
even raise questions about the official narrative. Google shares deep
connections with the U.S.’ political powerbrokers, notably with the
CIA, which originally
helped fund Google
into existence with the intention of controlling the flow of
information.
Understandably
— in light of its deep connections to those who stand the most to
lose from the actual free flow of information — Google has emerged
as a leader of the “fight” against so-called “fake news.” The
concept of “fake news” took on sudden weight following last
November’s U.S. presidential election: in the tweets and rants of
newly-elected President Donald Trump, media predictions of a Clinton
victory were ridiculed as “FAKE NEWS,” while Clinton supporters
also wound up blaming “fake news” for Clinton’s loss in the
election.
In
short order, the term became a term of derision and dismissal applied
to any and all disagreeable reporting. With the “fake news” net
cast so wide, the ground was fertile for a campaign against the
official story-challenging work of independent media — dependent
for its reach, to a far greater extent than its mainstream media
counterparts, upon the good graces of monster Internet traffic cops
such as Google.
The
following guide offers a variety of solutions and options for those
concerned with Google’s overreach and its decision to become the
Internet’s unelected “Ministry of Truth.”
Dumping
Google Search
Dominating over
80% of
global searches made on the Internet, Google’s chokehold on the
flow of information is undeniable. Now that its algorithm has been
shown to target news sites critical of the establishment on both
sides of the aisle, finding an alternative becomes an essential task
irrespective of one’s political leaning.
However,
don’t expect other brand name search engines like Microsoft’s
Bing or Yahoo to come to the rescue, as these too have
been caught censoring
search results in the past. Microsoft, in particular, is very
untrustworthy, given its eager
participation in
the NSA’s PRISM surveillance program — where it illegally shared
the Internet user data, including search queries, of U.S. citizens
without their knowledge.
Given
its willingness to cooperate with the government against the interest
of American citizens, Microsoft would be perhaps more willing even
than Google to censor access to so-called “fake news.”
Yahoo
is little better, as it too was an early adopter of the PRISM
surveillance program, second only to Microsoft. Like Microsoft,
they willingly
cooperate with
government censorship efforts – as well as the outing
of dissidents –
in other countries.
Thankfully,
as far as search engines go, there are other options available that
not only respect your privacy but also offer fairer searches,
including some features that even Google doesn’t offer.
DuckDuckGo
Of
all the viable Google alternatives, DuckDuckGo is
the most well-known, having been promoted by PCMag.com, the Guardian,
and The New York Times as a “long-term” threat to Google’s
search dominance. It was even one of the top 50 sites of 2011,
according to Time magazine.
However,
the “mainstream” accolades are, in this case, well-deserved.
DuckDuckGo is best known for its motto “the
search engine that doesn’t track you,” complete with Tor
browser functionality. While
this is a clear boon for privacy enthusiasts – or anyone concerned
about illegal NSA spying – it also results in search results that
are not filtered based on your search history. In other words, users
are more likely to be presented with search results that challenge
their existing ideas.
DuckDuckGo
also boasts an
impressive search algorithm that
excludes Google results but includes results from other well-known
search engines, mixed with the data obtained by DuckDuckGo’s
own web
crawler bot.
The results are filtered for spam and re-ordered using its trademark
“Instant Answers” platform, which places high-quality answers
above other results and advertisements. The “Instant Answers”
platform gathers answers provided by top popular websites, like
Wikipedia, in addition to community-built answers.
For
those tech-savvy users who don’t trust the spam filtering or even
the “Instant Answer” platform, these functions — as well as
DuckDuckGo itself — is open-source and also offers DuckDuckHack,
where users can create their own plug-ins for use in DuckDuckGo and
even help improve the search engine overall.
For
less savvy tech users, DuckDuckGo conveniently functions like any
other search engine, in addition to providing several features even
Google doesn’t offer. It
also has a search app for both iPhone and Android, as well as
plug-ins for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, and offers support in
several languages.
Ixquick/StartPage
Ixquick is
an American/Dutch meta-search engine, meaning itsimultaneously
searches multiple
databases and other search engines,
including Google, across the Internet. It uses a “star system” to
rank search results, placing a star next to each result for every
search engine that ranks that result as one of its 10 best for a
given search. A five-star result, for example, means that five search
engines considered that result to be among the 10 most relevant.
Ixquick
— which has now merged with its subsidiary, StartPage — also
tackles the issue of privacy by not storing user-specific details
such as cookies or past search results. Like DuckDuckGo, Ixquick
offers unfiltered search results generated by Google’s
“personalized” searches. Privacy enthusiasts may recognize
Ixquick as the default search engine for the Tor browser.
Ixquick
is supported in 17 languages and offers a plug-in for Mozilla
Firefox. They also offer a privacy-minded, encrypted email server
called StartMail.
Gibiru
Gibiru,
like the aforementioned search engines, prides itself on offering
maximum privacy. It avoids tracking its users by providing anonymous
and encrypted searches. It describes itself as “the preferred
Search Engine for Patriots” and offers non-personalized, anonymous
web results while emphasizing the disdain of its developers for the
NSA. Part of what sets Gibiru apart is its claim to offer
“uncensored” searches, as their web crawlers intentionally
include pages that Google has blocked or buried in its search
results.
Gibiru
also has a unique feature called “Uncensored News.” In addition
to aggregating results from other search engines, Gibiru adds its own
algorithm that specifically looks for results from independent media
outlets, particularly those that tend to “promote ‘alternative’
views from the mainstream.”
Recognizing
that mainstream media results are picked up by Google and Bing,
Gibiru does not use its bandwidth searching through these results.
Even up-and-coming independent media sites can gain inclusion in
Uncensored News results by communicating with the Gibiru team.
Gibiru
offers both a toolbar and a plugin for Mozilla Firefox.
Subscribe
directly to your favorite pages
Though
the above search engines can assist in more accurate and less
censored internet searches, the best way to get news you trust is
directly from the source. Anyone who reads independent media
eventually develops preferences for certain sites and authors whose
content they consistently find reliable and interesting.
If
you are concerned with Google’s clampdown on independent media, the
most surefire way to ensure your access to the sites you enjoy is by
subscribing directly to them via email. Most independent media pages
offer you the option to subscribe to their mailing lists, where you
receive their top stories on a daily basis. Some pages charge for
subscriptions, but most – such as MintPress
News’ Daily Digest –
are free and allow you to unsubscribe at any time. Some websites,
including MintPress, also
offer apps for
Android or iPhone, which allow users direct and convenient access to
the content of those pages.
If
you are concerned that all of the newsletters and stories of the
pages you want to follow will clutter your email, there are several
good options. Some mail servers allow you to label certain types of
incoming mail, and creating a specific label for “news” can
streamline the process of following all of your favorite pages in one
place. Alternatively, you can create an email account dedicated to
news in order to keep it separate from email accounts more focused on
work or socializing.
In
some cases, however, your favorite writers may not regularly publish
in the same place, making their work difficult to follow via email
subscription. Many authors have either their own web pages dedicated
to their work or publish on websites such as Medium —
a site offering both free and premium membership options, that hosts
the writings of many big names in independent news from across the
political spectrum.
Signing
up for Medium allows you to follow any writer you like, even
mainstream ones – a boon, for instance, if you like a certain
writer at, say, The Wall Street Journal but don’t trust the paper
as a whole. Certain popular writers in independent media — such
Nafeez Ahmed’s Insurge
Intelligence —
even publish some of their biggest stories exclusively on Medium.
Dump
social media for news
Facebook’s moderation system, which combines an automated flagging system with limited human oversight, has consistently drawn criticism, once banning a satirical account which criticized U.S. military spending.(AP/Czarek Sokolowski)
Though
some may value their Facebook account for keeping in touch with
friends and family, the social media giant is quickly becoming
unreliable for receiving news content posted by your friends as well
as the people or pages you follow. Facebook and Twitter have each
been caught censoring on several occasions and both now openly patrol
for “fake news” and “hate speech” — burying stories that
users would otherwise see, based on the recommendations of Facebook
or Twitter-approved flaggers. Many of these flaggers have been found
to publish “fake news” themselves or have a strong bias against
particular viewpoints, particularly those critical of conservative
politics.
Just
as with Google, Facebook and Twitter users can no longer be sure that
their newsfeeds contain the news they want to read, just as content
creators and publishers can no longer expect the same scope and reach
they once enjoyed on social media.
Unfortunately,
the alternatives to Facebook and Twitter are few and lack the large
user communities that make a social network successful. However,
there are two notable sites that are attempting to change that.
One
of those sites is Steemit. Steemit is
a social media platform that runs a blogging and social network
website built on top of a blockchain database. Steemit now boasts a
decently sized community, though it hardly compares to Facebook in
terms of daily users. Part of its success has been due to the site’s
commitment to paying users for creating and curating popular content
on the site.
Per the site’s system, users receive digital points (“Steem”)
depending on the success of their posts, which they can exchange for
more tangible rewards or payment via online exchanges. With $1 of
Steem now
worth just
over $4 USD, some people have found using Steemit to be both socially
and economically beneficial.
Another
potential Facebook competitor is Minds —
anopen
source, encrypted, and community-owned social network site that
values free speech and
doesn’t bow to government or advertiser pressure. It hosts
individual user profiles and blogs and creates an unfiltered
newsfeed for its users.
Members
can even be paid for posting their content if it garners a
significant number of views and upvotes. Although at present the
Minds community is tiny compared to that of Facebook, it may in years
to come become a more popular alternative, as Facebook continues to
disappoint.
Avoiding
outright censorship if and when It happens
While
censorship has long
been a reality in
countries like China, Western governments like to tout themselves as
being the guardians of freedom and the free flow of information. But
many of these governments, particularly the United States, have come
to realize in recent years that they are on
the losing side of
the “information war,” as trust in the corporate-owned media and
the government itself has sunk to historic lows.
Though
Western governments have, so far, outsourced censorship to technology
companies like Google and Facebook, there is little reason to believe
that these governments will refrain from demanding the outright
censorship of information that doesn’t toe the official line.
Take,
for example, the recent rhetoric of U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May
who, in the wake of the Manchester bombing, has pushed for censoring
“extremist propaganda” online. May’s assertion concerned
internet watchdog groups,
who likened her proposals to China’s widespread censorship of the
Internet.
If
official government censorship comes to your country – or if you
suspect that it is already there – the easiest workaround is
setting up a virtual private network, or VPN. A VPN allows you to use
your computer as though it were connected to a network other than the
one you actually use. In the event of government censorship in your
country, a VPN allows you to virtually connect to a network set up in
another country where such censorship is not in effect. Using a VPN
has the added bonus of greater Internet privacy — as effective VPN
protocols encrypt your traffic, helping to protect you from
government surveillance as well as censorship.
VPNs
are provided by VPN service providers, not all of whom are created
equal. VPN providers with good reputations include Strong VPN,
SurfEasy, and TunnelBear. Of these, TunnelBear is the least
expensive – offering a free service – and SurfEasy the most
expensive at $11.99 per month. However, the Opera browser now
includes SurfEasy’s VPN services for free. A comprehensive guide on
how to choose the best VPN service provider for your needs can be
found here.
