Op CBC radio afgelopen zaterdagmiddag een deskundige (kreeg z’n naam niet mee) die stelde dat niet alleen de winning van schalie-olie winning, maar ook die van teerzanden op de reet ligt, daar de prijs per vat olie minstens 40 Canadese dollars moet zijn om nog enigszins winst te kunnen behalen op de kosten van winning. Door de ruzie tussen Rusland en de reli-fascistische terreurstaat Saoedi-Arabië is de olieprijs bijna de helft lager dan die 40 dollar, bovendien zorgt het platleggen van industrieën en zelfs hele landen door de Coronacrisis ervoor dat de vraag naar olie fiks is afgenomen.
Daar bedrijven niet langer wensten mee te doen aan de uitbreiding van een grote pijpleiding heeft Trudeau, de minister-president van Canada, de betaling voor de uitbreiding van deze Trans Mountain Pipeline (TMP) op de schouders van de belastingbetaler gelegd…. Dit soort pijpleidingen worden zoals gewoonlijk ook aangelegd over gebieden die alleen bestemd zijn voor de oorspronkelijke volkeren van Noord-Amerika en vervuilen daar wateren en bodem……* In dit geval gaat het om gebieden van de oorspronkelijke volkeren die Canada rijk is**.Oorspronkelijke volkeren die worden aangeduid als ‘indianen’.
De deskundige pleitte er dan ook voor om te stoppen met de aanleg van deze peperdure pijpleiding, laten we hopen dat dit inderdaad gebeurt, echter als je het fanatisme ziet waarmee de Canadese premier Trudeau op dit dossier ziet, zal de aanleg hoogstwaarschijnlijk ‘gewoon’ doorgaan……
Heb aan de links hieronder ook die van pijpleidingen in de VS toegevoegd, ook deze gaan voor een groot deel over middels waardeloze verdragen aan oorspronkelijke bewoners toegekend land……** Het gaat dan om uitbreidingen of aanleg van pijpleidingen met namen als Keystone XL en de Dakota Access Pipeline.

daarmee hele ecosystemen, ofwel extreme vervuiling van grond en

** Gebieden
die aan die volkeren werden toegekend middels waardeloze verdragen van
de Canadese overheid en die van de VS, zo gauw daar delfstoffen worden gevonden, of men heeft die gebieden zoals in dit geval nodig voor de aanleg van pijpleidingen, blijken
deze verdragen geen enkele juridische waarde te hebben….. Ofwel ondanks dat deze overheden de oorspronkelijke volkeren middels een genocide hebben gedecimeerd, is men zo onbeschoft om gewoon schijt te hebben aan de rechten van deze zo vervolgde volkeren…….
De
wereld vergaapte zich de laatste maanden aan de poging tot
impeachment van Trump, die van meet af aan tot mislukken gedoemd was,
daar de Republikeinen in de senaat al lang hadden aangegeven
hier niet in mee te zullen gaan (wat niet wil zeggen dat Trump geen
een ernstige misdaad heeft begaan door de president van Oekraïne zo onder druk te
zetten*).
Intussen
is de Trump administratie bezig geweest met het uitkleden van
milieuwetgeving, zoals de National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), waarmee
plannenmakers, aannemers en anderen werden gedwongen te konderzoeken wat de
gevolgen zijn voor het milieu bij de aanleg/bouw van wegen, gebouwen
pijpleidingen, fabrieken enz. Bij schade voor het milieu moest men
dan maatregelen nemen om deze te verminderen, dan wel maatregelen
nemen tot het compenseren van de milieuschade…..
Het
Care2 Team is een petitie gestart om Trump en zijn boevenbende te
dwingen om de bestaande regel en wetgeving te handhaven. Moet je nagaan:
deze wetten en regels in de VS zijn nu al, dus zonder verder ingrijpen van de Trump administratie, waardeloos…… Zo mogen oliemaatschappijen in de VS het
zwaar vervuilde water dat overblijft na fracken, althans het
zwaar vervuilde water wat men weer kan oppompen, te lozen in rivieren of in
zee…….. In feite is dit een verkapte vorm van subsidie, immers in
een normale democratie zou fracken van schalie-olie en -gas worden
verboden, dan wel zou men dit afvalwater moeten zuiveren of
vernietigen, een uiterst kostbare zaak, terwijl lozen zoals in de VS
al helemaal een doodzonde zou zijn…… Voorts laat fracken een maanlandschap achter met verontreinigde grond, een landschap dat men niet hoeft te herstellen en te zuiveren van gifstoffen….. Kortom: zonder (ook andere) subsidies zou schalie-olie en -gas veel te duur zijn……
Nu wil de Trump administratie
dat de EU dit ook op andere manieren gesubsidieerde schaliegas in de
vorm van LNG importeert uit de VS en de contracten met Rusland verscheurt (klik op het label NS2**, direct onder dit bericht),
terwijl dat Russische gas vergeleken met het schaliegas uit de VS
zo’n 100 keer ‘schoner’ is (qua winning en transport) en daardoor veel minder
belastend is voor het milieu…. De Trump administratie heeft zelfs bedrijven bedreigd met sancties als zij blijven meewerken bij de aanleg van NS2 (Nord Stream 2)……..
In de
petitietekst haalt Care 2 het voorbeeld aan van de Keystone 1
pijpleiding, die over/door o.a. heilige gronden en wateren loopt van de
oorspronkelijke bevolking van de VS (‘indianen’), deze pijpleiding heeft intussen al gezorgd voor het
weglekken van 400.000 gallon olie, dat is meer dan 1,5 miljoen liter
olie (!!!)……..
De Trump administratie heeft de stappen voor het aanleggen van dit soort
pijpleidingen overigens al sterk vereenvoudigd en enkele staten in de VS
hebben gesteld dat actievoerders die zich verzetten tegen de aanleg van pijpleidingen en die zich op de grote weg bevinden voor acties, ongestraft
mogen worden doodgereden……… (echt ‘een leuk vakantieland’, de
VS……)
We leven
met z’n allen op een kleine planeet en wat in de VS gebeurt heeft z’n
weerslag op de de rest van de wereld, zoals ook de gevolgen van de
klimaatverandering laten zien. Juist daarom is het belangrijk dat ook

The
National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) is perhaps the most
important environmental law we have. For five decades it has
required people constructing new roads, buildings, pipelines,
factories and more to research and clearly outline how their plans
will affect the environment. Most importantly, it requires them to
make up for some of the damage.
NEPA
is not the sexiest piece of legislation out there, and Trump
shredding it doesn’t look as shocking now like some of the other
egregious things he’s done, like detaining children in cages at
the border. But make no mistake: what he’s doing will have equally
far-reaching impacts.
Trump’s
plan is essentially to ignore climate change and leave us to clean
up the mess. Like all things he does, it’s a bad deal for everyone
but him and his friends.

notorious enemy of environmental protection measures, the
president is using the thin-as-ice argument of protecting jobs in
the construction industry in order to further devastate our
planet. The administration is moving to add revisions
to NEPA that would
remove the requirement to consider climate change when assessing
the environmental impact of pipelines, highways, and other large
federal structural projects.Recently,
the Keystone 1 Pipeline spilled
almost 400,000 gallons of oil in North Dakota.
If these revisions are permitted, we can expect far worse. Some of
the new rules would limit the number of projects that require an
environmental review at all – deforestation, waste dumping, and
increased emissions would run rampant.
More horrifying
still is the fact that the revisions would allow projects to
ignore the impact of climate change on their future. For example, if a rise in sea
level could potentially submerge a proposed highway, that will not
be taken into consideration in its construction. Ignoring this
reality will yield wasted work that has to be redone in several
years time, ultimately squandering time and money.
The
“burdensome regulations” that President Trump complains
of are the same regulations that keep us safe and our planet from
warming any faster than it already is. While Australia’s bushfires
devastate the continent, now is not the time to pull back on the
laws protecting our environment. Instead, it’s the time to ramp up
environmental protections.Please

vastbesloten de veel grotere Keystone XL pijpleiding af te laten
bouwen…… Overigens bepaald niet het eerste lek in deze
pijpleiding en andere oliepijpleidingen in de VS….*

Schijt
aan de natuur, schijt aan de dieren die daarin leven en vooral voor
de zoveelste keer schijt aan de rechten van de oorspronkelijke

The
fight against the Keystone XL Pipeline has seen its ups and downs
over the decade we’ve all been fighting it, but our resolve to keep
this pipeline from ever being built has never waned. And right now,
we have another opportunity to show just how much opposition there is
to this dirty, dangerous tar sands pipeline.
Amidst
legal challenges, demonstrations, and public pressure against the
dirty pipeline, the State Department has now opened yet another
45-day comment period on a Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact
Statement (SEIS) for the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline.
Of
course, we know that the Trump administration will do whatever it can
to force this pipeline through, but despite their efforts, the
Keystone XL pipeline remains mired in legal battles. This public
comment period presents a key opportunity to support future lawsuits
against the pipeline by showing just how many people don’t want
this pipeline to be built. Any
written public opposition to the pipeline could be extremely useful
in legal cases where
landowners and impacted communities can quantify existing opposition
to Keystone XL in the courts.
The
new route proposed for the Keystone XL pipeline would threaten to
pollute the water intakes for over 30,000 Montanans. And last week,
the already-operating original Keystone Pipeline, to which the XL is
a proposed extension, leaked once again for the twentieth time,
coating over 300,000 gallons of crude oil across wetlands in North
Dakota.
In
addition, as we’ve known since it was first proposed, the Keystone
XL pipeline would be a climate disaster. Given the severity of the
climate crisis, the last thing we should be doing is building new
pipelines to ship dirty tar sands for export around the world.

Beste bezoeker, dit was het voor vandaag, morgen meer berichten, maak er een mooie dag van als het even mogelijk is.
Het is
vandaag 189 jaar geleden dat de The Indian Removal Act werd
goedgekeurd in het VS Congres. Met deze wet was het toegestaan om de
oorspronkelijke bewoners in het Zuidoosten van de VS met geweld te
verjagen uit hun huizen, dorpen en hun boerderijen…..
Een paar
jaar later werden duizenden mensen van het Cherokee volk en andere
volkeren verdreven uit hun huizen en boerderijen in de staat
Georgia, men hield ze gevangen in gevangenkampen, ofwel
concentratiekampen en werden vandaar op een voettocht gedwongen
richting Oklahoma, waarbij minstens 2.000 van deze mensen in feite
werden vermoord…… (zie de vergelijking met de Armeense Genocide……) Deze tocht noemt men ‘The Trail of Tears’, ofwel de ‘Tocht der Tranen’.
Deze
oorspronkelijke bewoners werden gedwongen om een eenzijdig verdrag te
tekenen, waarbij ze hun prima bewerkte gronden ‘vrijwillig ruilden’ voor gebied
in Oklahoma….. Ondanks dat een rechter gehakt maakte van dit
verdrag, drukte de president, destijds de psychopaat Andrew Jackson,
de gedwongen verhuizingen door…….
Niet
toevallig ook dat de huidige psychopathische VS president Trump een
groot bewonderaar is van Jackson en zelfs een portret van deze
bloedige schoft heeft opgehangen in z’n werkkamer in het Witte
Huis…….
Ongelofelijk
als je deze geschiedenis voor je ziet en intussen weet dat het
grootste deel van de oorspronkelijke bewoners, van wie Noord-Amerika
in feite was, middels een genocide werden uitgemoord door
moorddadige, psychopathische Europeanen…… Ongelofelijk ook als je in ogenschouw
neemt dat de oorspronkelijke volkeren van de VS en Canada nog steeds
moeten ‘vechten’ (figuurlijk) voor hun rechten en keer op keer worden

“THE
INDIAN REMOVAL ACT”
On
this day in 1830, Congress passed “The Indian Removal Act” which
permitted the forceful and sometimes violent removal of Native
Americans from their homes, towns, villages and farms in the
Southeastern United States.
A
few years later, thousands of Cherokee landowners and landowners of
other nations were removed from their homes and farms by the State of
Georgia, held in prison camps and then sent on an 800 mile forced
march to Oklahoma which left at least 2,000 dead.
The
land was theirs.
A
fraudulent treaty had been foisted on them “agreeing” to a
one-sided deal in which they “traded” their prime agricultural
land – which they were farming expertly – for a reservation in
Oklahoma.
The
Cherokee people appealed to the Supreme Court which struck down the
bogus treaty as fraudulent.
Andrew
Jackson’s response: “John Marshall has made his decision; now let
him enforce it.”
15,000
militia descended on the region removing native people from their
homes at gunpoint and under threat of violence.
Speculators
pounced on the stolen land and turned it into an empire of
slavery-fueled plantations.

Het
hieronder opgenomen artikel werd geschreven door Christina Leza,
‘taal antropoloog’ en eerder gepubliceerd op The Conversation. Leza
betoogt volkomen terecht dat de oorspronkelijke bevolking van de VS
en Mexico, ‘indianen’, het slachtoffer zijn van getrokken grenzen en dat in grotere mate als Trump zijn zin krijgt en de hele grens met Mexico
afgeschermd zal worden middels een ‘border wall….’
De grens
tussen de VS en Mexico is voor deze oorspronkelijke volkeren een denkbeeldige,
een grens getrokken door de witte kolonisten en hun nazaten, die deze volkeren met een genocide voor
een groot deel hebben uitgemoord……. De stamverbanden in het zuiden
van de VS en het noorden van Mexico gaan ver over beide grenzen…..
Voor hun
ceremonies zijn de mensen van deze volkeren aangewezen op stammen die over de grens leven en een groot aantal van deze mensen zijn zelfs voor de eerste levensbehoeften aangewezen op winkels over de grens…. Zo is een
bepaald deel van een stam in Mexico voor de boodschappen afhankelijk
van de dichtstbijzijnde plaats, in de VS…… Een veeboer van de O’odham nation moet voor het water dat hij nodig heeft, normaal gesproken op gezichtsafstand, nu mijlen ver omrijden om daar bij te kunnen……. (hetzelfde maken Palestijnen mee op de illegaal door Israël bezette West Bank, hoewel bijvoorbeeld veel boeren daar hun land in het geheel niet meer kunnen bereiken……)
Bij de
grensovergangen worden deze mensen niet zelden getreiterd door
grenswachten en het is altijd weer afwachten of ze wel doorgelaten
zullen worden, zo twijfelt dit leeghoofdige psychopathische geteisem
aan het feit of ze wel echt tot een stam van ‘indianen’ behoren en
moeten ze dit aantonen door in hun eigen taal te spreken, of zelfs te
zingen, bij weigering kunnen ze worden geweigerd…….
Zoals
gezegd de witte kolonisten hebben deze oorspronkelijke volkeren bijna
uitgemoord (in heel Amerika, de grootste genocide ooit….) en nog
dagelijks worden deze mensen op alle mogelijke manieren dwars

restrictions were making life difficult for Native Americans who live
along – and across – the U.S.-Mexico border even before President
Donald Trump declared
a national emergency to
build his border wall.
The
traditional homelands of 36 federally
recognized tribes –
including the Kumeyaay, Pai, Cocopah, O’odham, Yaqui, Apache and
Kickapoo peoples – were split in two by the 1848
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and
1853 Gadsden
Purchase,
which carved modern-day California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas out
of northern Mexico.
Today,
tens of thousands of people belonging to U.S. Native tribes live in
the Mexican states of Baja
California, Sonora, Coahuila and Chihuahua,
my research estimates. The Mexican government does not recognize
indigenous peoples in Mexico as nations as the U.S. does, so there is
no enrollment system there.
Still,
many Native people in Mexico routinely cross the U.S.-Mexico border
to participate in cultural events, visit religious sites, attend
burials, go to school or visit family. Like other “non-resident
aliens,” they must pass through rigorous
security checkpoints,
where they are subject to interrogation, inspection and rejection
or delay.
Tribal
members say that many Native Americans in the U.S. feel detached from
their relatives in Mexico.
“The
effect of a wall is already in us,” Mike Wilson, a member of the
Tohono O’odham Nation, who lives in Tucson, Arizona, told me. “It
already divides us.”
The
Tohono O’odham are among the U.S. federal tribes fighting
the government’s efforts to
beef up existing security with a border wall. In late January, the
Tohono O’odham, Pascua Yaqui and National Congress of Indian
Americans met to
create a proposal for facilitating indigenous border crossing.
The
Tohono O’odham already know how life changes when traditional lands
are physically partitioned.

That
has become difficult since 2006, when a steel
vehicle barrier was
built along most of the 62-mile stretch of U.S.-Mexico border that
bisects the Tohono O’odham Nation.
Previously,
to get to the U.S. side of Tohono O’odham territory, many tribe
members would simply drive across their land. Now, they must travel
long distances to official ports of entry.
And
Pacific Standard magazine reported in
February 2019 that three Tohono O’odham villages in Sonora, Mexico,
had been cut off from their nearest food supply, which was in the
U.S.

The
United States offers few such protections.
Officially,
various federal laws and treaties affirm the rights of federally
recognized tribes to cross between the U.S., Mexico and Canada.
The Jay
Treaty of 1794 grants
indigenous peoples on the U.S.-Canada border the right to freely pass
and repass the border. It also gives Canadian-born indigenous persons
the right to live and work in the United States.
In
practice, however, the free passage of Native people who live across
both the United States’ northern or southern border is curtailed
by strict
identification laws.
The
United States requires anyone entering the country to present a
passport or other U.S.-approved identification confirming their
citizenship or authorization to enter. The Real ID Act of 2005 allows
the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) secretary to waive any U.S. law –
including those protecting indigenous rights – that may
impede border
enforcement.
Several
standard U.S. tribal identification documents – including Form
I-872 American Indian Card and
enhanced tribal photo identification cards – are approved
travel documents that
enable Native Americans to enter the U.S. at land ports of entry.
Arbitrary
identity tests
Only
the American
Indian Card,
which is issued exclusively to members of the Kickapoo tribes,
recognizes indigenous people’s right to cross the border regardless
of citizenship.
According
to the Texas
Band of Kickapoo Act of 1983,
“all members of the Band” – including those who live in Mexico
– are “entitled to freely pass and repass the borders of the
United States and to live and work in the United States.”
The
majority of indigenous Mexicans wishing to live or work in the United
States, however, must apply
for immigrant residence and work authorization like
any other person born outside of the U.S. The relevant tribal
governments in the U.S. may also work with Customs and Border Patrol
to waive certain travel document requirements on a case-by-case basis
for short-term visits of Native members from Mexico.
Since
border patrol agents have expansive discretionary
power to
refuse or delay entries in the interest of national security, its
officers sometimes make arbitrary requests to verify Native identity
in these cases.
Such
tests, my research shows, have included asking people to speak their
indigenous language or – if the person is crossing to participate
in a Native ceremony – to perform a traditional song or dance.
Those who refuse these requests may
be denied entry.
Border
agents at both the Mexico and Canada
borders have
also reportedly mishandled or destroyed Native ceremonial or
medicinal items they deem suspicious.
“Our
relatives are all considered ‘aliens,’” said the Yaqui elder
and activist José Matus. “[T]hey’re not aliens. … They’re
indigenous to this land.”
“We’ve
been here since time immemorial,” he added.
De
Canadese regering doet er alles aan om het Kinder Morgan, het bedrijf
dat olie uit teerzand haalt en transporteert, naar de zin te maken. Vandaar dat de regering
van deelstaat Brits-Columbia (BC) het bedrijf flink steunt in haar
smerige praktijken met maar liefst 4,5 miljard dollar…. Met dat geld koopt BC zogenaamd een aandeel in het bedrijf…. Het gaat hier om het
merendeel van het bedrag dat Kinder Morgan nodig zegt te hebben t.w.

Dit
geld zal worden gebruikt voor nog een pijpleiding, dit ondanks groot
bezwaar van de bevolking in o.a. Alberta en BC, de pijpleiding zal dan ook lopen van Alberta naar de kust van Brits-Columbia, en zal verder een
aantal pompstations bevatten (‘goed voor de werkgelegenheid’, ook al
gaat de wereld eraan kapot……)…….
Zoals
bekend zijn er jaarlijks vele lekken in oliepijpleidingen, in de VS
is dit helemaal bar en boos. Twee weken geleden meldden de autoriteiten
van BC dat er in de Trans Mountain Pipeline (TMP) een lek was ontdekt waaruit 100 liter olie was weggelopen.
100
liter is de hoeveelheid weggelekte olie die Kinder Morgan niet hoeft
te melden, echter intussen blijkt het niet om 100 liter olie te gaan
maar om 4.800 liter…….
Zo
worden bevolkingen wereldwijd dag in dag uit bedonderd door hun onverantwoorde inhumane neoliberale overheden…….
De
Canadese premier Trudeau doet net of hij veel meer voor het milieu
wil doen dan Trump, echter dan moet je vooral niet kijken naar zaken als
smerige oliewinning, transport van olie en alle andere misdaden
tegen het milieu van het grote bedrijfsleven in ‘zijn land……’
Toch
fijn voor de bevolking van BC dat ze mee mogen betalen aan de

Trans
Mountain spill 48 times larger than B.C. government first reported

KAMLOOPS,
B.C.—Officials say a spill from Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain
pipeline two weeks ago was 48 times larger than initially reported.
The
British Columbian (B.C.) Ministry of Environment says the spill
volume reported from the company’s Darfield station north of
Kamloops on May 27 has been revised to 4,800 litres from 100 litres.

It
says 100 litres is the minimum threshold under the company’s spill
reporting obligations, so that’s why the ministry estimated 100
litres at the time.
Trans
Mountain spokesperson Ali Hounsell says the company never provided an
estimate of how much medium crude oil escaped, other than to confirm
with regulators that it was over the reportable threshold.
“Trans
Mountain had not provided an estimate of the volume spilled, other
than to confirm with regulators that it was over the reportable
threshold, until cleanup had sufficiently progressed to a stage where
an accurate estimation could be provided,” she said in an email.
Following
an onsite investigation, she says Trans Mountain has provided the
updated volume estimate to regulators.
She
says Trans Mountain is in the final stages of completing the cleanup.
Under
British Columbia’s spill reporting regulation, Trans Mountain was
required to report the spill immediately. The regulation says the
quantity spilled should be among the information included in that
report, “to the extent practical.”
The
company turned off the pipeline for several hours the day of the
spill, which the ministry said came from a leaking flow metre.
The
spill was contained to the station property and no waterways were
affected, the ministry said.
Two
days later, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the federal
government will spend $4.5 billion to buy the Trans Mountain
expansion and Kinder Morgan Canada’s core assets.
Kinder
Morgan had ceased all non-essential spending on the Trans Mountain
expansion in April, vowing to cancel it unless it received assurances
it can proceed without delays and without undue risk to shareholders
by a deadline of May 31.

On
this day in 1830, Congress passed “The Indian Removal Act” which
permitted the forceful and sometimes violent removal of Native
Americans from their homes, towns, villages and farms in the
Southeastern United States.
A
few years later, thousands of Cherokee landowners and landowners of
other nations were removed from their homes and farms by the State of
Georgia, held in prison camps and then sent on an 800 mile forced
march to Oklahoma which left at least 2,000 dead.
The
land was theirs.
A
fraudulent treaty had been foisted on them “agreeing” to a
one-sided deal in which they “traded” their prime agricultural
land – which they were farming expertly – for a reservation in
Oklahoma.
The
Cherokee people appealed to the Supreme Court which struck down the
bogus treaty as fraudulent.
Andrew
Jackson’s response: “John Marshall has made his decision; now let
him enforce it.”
15,000
militia descended on the region removing native people from their
homes at gunpoint and under threat of violence.
Speculators
pounced on the stolen land and turned it into an empire of
slavery-fueled plantations.

Russia Didn’t Use Propaganda on Social Media to Incite US Pipeline
Protests
(SP Op-ed) — A
“staff report” from Republicans on the United States House
Science, Space, and Technology Committee offers little evidence to
prove allegations of Russian efforts to influence U.S. energy markets
through “social media propaganda” to incite pipeline protests.
Nonetheless, the
report,
pushed by Republican chairman Representative Lamar Smith, went
virtually unquestioned when it was covered by U.S. media.
What
the report reveals are several Twitter and Instagram posts that
Republicans claim were posted by “Russian agents” linked to the
Internet Research Agency (IRA), the troll farm which has become a
focus of narratives that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential
election.
The
report recycles unsubstantiated news reporting that strongly
suggested the Russian government was behind anti-fracking activism in
the U.S. It contends these posts and tweets demonstrate the “broad
nature of Russia’s meddling and to reveal Russia’s attempts to
deceive and influence the American public, especially as related to
domestic energy issues.”
“Between
2015 and 2017, there were an estimated 9,097 Russian posts or tweets
regarding U.S. energy policy or a current energy event on Twitter,
Facebook and Instagram,” according to the report. “Between 2015
and 2017, there were an estimated 4,334 IRA accounts across Twitter,
Facebook and Instagram.”
To
understand how these numbers are incredibly minuscule, there are
about 95 million posts to Instagram per day and 800 million or more
users, as of September 2017. About 500,000 comments, 293,000 status
updates, and 136,000 photos are posted to Facebook daily. There are
over 2 billion active users on Facebook. On Twitter, about 500
million or more tweets are posted each day. There are 330 million
active monthly users.
House
Republicans did not break down the number of IRA accounts by
platform. But if the 4,334 accounts were all Twitter accounts, it
would mean the number of active Russian accounts represented less
than 0.0013 percent of Twitter users. That percentage would be much
smaller for Facebook and Instagram.
As
for reported posts and tweets, because Republicans are pulling from
contents that appeared between 2015 and 2017, they are essentially
revealing an average of 3,000 or so posts and tweets appeared each
year.
What
is 3,000 out of the 95 million posts to Instagram? What is 3,000 out
of the hundreds of thousands of comments and updates to Facebook?
What is 3,000 out of 500 million or more tweets?
These
are smaller than microscopic numbers. They barely can be said to
represent a broad influence campaign by Russia to undermine U.S.
fossil fuel industries and incite opposition to American “energy
independence.”
The
“Russian tweets” are not even disinformation. They mostly appear
to be messages containing advocacy from Senator Bernie Sanders,
presidential candidate in the 2016 election, and his supporters. For
example:
These
tweets reference the health impact of natural gas fracking. They
mention the link between earthquakes and fracking. They note
political efforts to ban fracking through state ballot initiatives.
What they do not do is promote disinformation, such as falsehoods
about the fossil fuel industry.
The
report continues a blatant agenda by Republicans to discredit climate
activism against oil and gas pipelines. It even argues Russians are
trying to make “useful idiots” of “unwitting
environmental groups and activists in furtherance of its energy
influence operations.”
In
July 2017, Smith and Republican Representative Randy
Weber urged Treasury
Secretary Steven Mnuchin to “investigate whether the Kremlin [was]
bankrolling green campaigns against the fracking technology that
helped the U.S. overtake Russia in gas production.”
But
as POLITICO noted, “Allegations have circulated for years that
Moscow has sought to discourage European countries from developing
their own natural gas supplies as an alternative to Russian fuel. And
conservatives have sought to extend those concerns to the U.S.—though
there’s little but innuendo to base them on.”
A
surge in activism against pipeline projects, especially as the
impacts of climate change intensify, has brought pressure to fossil
fuel industry interests. Smith is one of the industry’s most ardent
defenders. He even publicly contends climate change is still subject
to debate when it is settled science.
An
Inside Climate News report details how
the fossil fuel industry is a major contributor to science committee
members. It donated $8 million from 2006 to 2016, making it the
leading source of “industry political action committee money.”
The oil and gas industry is one of Smith’s biggest
contributors, “with $764,000 in donations over the course of his
career in Congress.”
Smith
frequently alleges charges of “secret science” against government
agencies that seek to regulate coal-fired power plants, oil
refineries, and energy pollution in general. He engages in the very
kind of efforts to provoke discord and disruption that the House
science committee report condemns. It is all to manufacture doubt in
order to tie up policy deliberations in debate so they do not affect
companies’ profits.
While
this report is clearly rubbish, Democrats have not said anything to
challenge the allegations. Perhaps, this is because they are fully
invested in the narrative that Russia is meddling in all parts of
American discourse on social media.
Smith
invokes the bipartisan consensus on “Russian manipulation.”
Democratic Senator Ben Cardin recently published a report that
stated, “According to NATO officials, Russian intelligence agencies
also reportedly provide covert support to European environmental
groups to campaign against fracking for natural gas,
thereby keeping the EU more dependent on Russian supplies. A study by
the Wilfried Martens Center for European Studies reports that the
Russian government has invested $95 million in NGOs that seek to
persuade EU governments to end shale gas exploration.”
During
a tinePublic speech in
2014, former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton accused
“phony environmental groups” that she believes are funded by the
Russians of being responsible for the opposition to oil pipelines and
natural gas fracking. “I’m a big environmentalist, but these were
funded by the Russians to stand against any effort, oh that pipeline,
that fracking, that whatever will be a problem for you, and a lot of
the money supporting that message was coming from Russia.”
Much
of the notion among conservatives that U.S. climate activism is
funded by Russia stems from a report by a front group, the
Environmental Policy Alliance, operated by Berman & Co., which is
run by Rick Berman.
Berman
is known for attacks against
Mothers Against Drunk Driving. He also has defended Big Tobacco from
anti-smoking campaigns. He previously boasted,
“If the oil and gas industry wants to prevent its opponents from
slowing its efforts to drill in more places, it must be prepared to
employ tactics like digging up embarrassing tidbits about
environmentalists and liberal celebrities” and urged industry
executives “to exploit emotions like fear, greed and anger and turn
them against the environmental groups.”
Part
of Berman’s efforts to exploit emotions involved accusing U.S.
environmental organization of accepting money from the Sea Change
Foundation, which allegedly accepted funds from a Bermuda-based
company called Klein Limited with executives tied to Russian oil and
gas companies.
“We
double-check confirmed that the origin of the funds we’re getting
from Sea Change is through a donor, not from Russia,” Melinda
Pierce, Sierra Club’s legislative director, declared.
“It’s a private U.S. citizen who cares about climate change and
has invested in the kind of work that the Sierra Club does to move us
off dirty energy to clean energy.”
This
campaign to smear U.S. environmental organizations as agents of the
Russian oil and gas industry was picked up by Republicans. It
influenced a 2014 report,
“The Chain of Environmental Command: How a Club of Billionaires and
Their Foundations Control the Environmental Movement and Obama’s
EPA.”
Back
then, it was innuendo and unsubstantiated claims intended to help the
industry defend itself against pipeline activists. It remains
industry-driven propaganda.
The
only difference now is that the current political climate embraces a
bipartisan consensus that Russians will stop at nothing to sow
discord. Democrats do not see conservative political action
committees and right-wing industry front groups as responsible for
political turmoil over issues mired in contentious debate. They see
Russians, and even if they do not deny the reality of climate change,
that leaves U.S. policy vulnerable to actions that are aimed at
protecting fossil fuel companies and drowning out protest from
citizens concerned about climate change.
In

Pipeline (DAPL.) en de Keystone XL pijpleiding, dwars door de gebieden en onder/over de rivieren van deze volkeren….. Deze oliepijpleidingen gaan zonder enige
twijfel lekken, zoals al die pijpleidingen doen in de VS* (en elders) en daarmee
zal een groot gebied inclusief een rivier van o.a. het Sioux volk zwaar worden vervuild……… Hetzelfde gebeurt overigens in Zuid-Amerika……
Tijd dat
de hele overgebleven natuurvolkeren en natuurgebieden op onze kleine aarde zo worden benaderd als men in Nieuw-Zeeland voor de Maori’s doet, zodat we

New
Zealand Grants Mountain the Same Legal Rights as a Person
(ANTIMEDIA)—New
Zealand just granted a mountain the same legal rights as a person,
the Guardian reports.
Located in New Zealand’s North Island, Mount Taranaki will be the
third geographic landmark in the country to be deemed a “legal
personality.”
Mount
Taranaki is
120,000 years old and is also a dormant volcano that last erupted in
1775. Under the new designation, if a person or entity brings harm to
the mountain, the legal rights protecting the mountain will be the
same afforded to an ordinary individual. The move also entails that
the land “owns itself” and cannot be owned by another human.
Guardianship
of the sacred mountain will be shared between eight local Maori
tribes (New Zealand’s indigenous population) and the government.
The decision is a long-awaited acknowledgment of the indigenous
people’s relationship with the mountain. They view it as an
ancestor and family member.
“All
Crown-owned land within the National Park will be vested in a legal
personality, meaning the land will own itself – a special legal
status that has previously been granted to Te Urewera and the
Whanganui River.
“The
concept was considered groundbreaking and was used to neutralise the
controversial issue of ownership. Instead of human ownership over the
environment, it embraces the Maori relationship with the land and
recognises its cultural and spiritual significance.”
The
acknowledgment was made through a record of understanding, which was
signed last week. The record of understanding also noted that
the mountain is an ever-present and personified ancestor that
“transcend[s] our perception of time, location, culture and
spirit.“
“Their
presence pervades our scenery, projecting mystery, adventure and
beauty, capturing our attention and our imagination in how humanity
can be closely bound to a landscape,” it
stated.
According
to Andrew Little, New Zealand’s minister for treaty negotiations
(in this case, the Treaty
of Waitangi),
Mount Taranaki will now become a “legal personality in its own
right,” offering the “best possible protection” for the
increasingly popular tourist attraction.
“As
a New Plymouth local I grew up under the gaze of the maunga
[mountain] so I’m particularly pleased with the respect accorded to
local tangata whenua [local people] and the legal protection and
personality given to the mountain,” Little
said.
“Today’s
agreements are a major milestone in acknowledging the grievances and
hurt from the past as the Taranaki iwi experienced some of the worst
examples of Crown behaviour in the 19th century.”
One
of the more successful aspects of the development is that as part of
the agreement, the New Zealand government is required to apologize to
local Maori for the previous breaches of the Treaty of Waitangi it
has made against the mountain. However, local tribes will not receive
any monetary redress as compensation.
The
recent move follows a Waitangi Tribunal report from 1996 that said
there was no valid basis for the government’s confiscation of the
Mountain from the Maori in the first place.
“It
[Mt Taranaki] provides that sense of place, social association and
identity,” Taranaki
Iwi’s (Tribe) Chief Negotiator, Jamie Tuuta, told Fairfax media.
Earlier
this year, New Zealand granted the
90-mile Whanganui River the same legal rights as a person in a
similar move. India followed suit
not long after. New Zealand also granted similar rights to a national
park known
as Te Urewera.
“We
can trace our genealogy to the origins of the universe, and
therefore, rather than us being masters of the natural world, we are
part of it,” stated

Missing
from the discussion on this issue is that the New Zealand government
will retain guardianship of the mountain — the same New Zealand
government that is working to cement the Trans-Pacific Partnership
Agreement (TPPA) with full
knowledge that
many Maori claimants view the agreement as detrimental to their
native rights.
Despite
its positive implications, also missing from this topic is the notion
of where such a move will lead the human race in the years to come,
particularly in relation to artificial intelligence (AI). Saudi
Arabia recently granted citizenship status to a robot,
and it is not too farfetched to assume that in the very near future
we will be seeing legal protection afforded to more than just our
sacred mountains and rivers.

and a day for giving thanks, is perceived by many Native Americans as
a day filled with ignorance, a day filled with anger and a day full
of mourning.

While millions of Americans prepare this week to get into the
holiday spirit, beginning with Thanksgiving, how many are prepared to
view the day through an accurate lens? While to many Americans the
holiday serves as a reminder to give thanks, it is seen as a day of
mourning by countless others. The truth is: European migrants
brutally murdered Native Americans, stole their lands, and continue
to do so today.
Start
by acknowledging that almost everything taught about Thanksgiving in
most schools across the country is a lie. Most Americans remember
celebrations in elementary school in honor of Thanksgiving that
included activities ranging from coloring pages to parades to plays.
Everyone knows the drill: The Pilgrims fled Europe before landing on
Plymouth Rock. The resident natives taught them how to farm the land,
they all sat down for a big meal in 1621, and everyone lived happily
ever after in the United States.
This
brief history lesson is often followed by teepees made hastily from
paper bags and headdresses for all children in the classroom using
brown paper and brightly colored feathers. Some children are assigned
the role of Pilgrims while others are told to play Indian for the
day. Younger children make turkeys shaped like their hands while high
school students are allowed to glimpse a few select representations
of the gruesome battles involved in colonization.
Unfortunately,
the watered-down, inaccurate teaching of the first Thanksgiving
continues into junior high, high school and even into college, with
most Americans never actually learning the truth. If non-Native
Americans are to learn the truth of the day, it is best to go
directly to the source. While there were two parties involved in this
supposed great feast, most Americans reference only the story told by
the Pilgrims, only the story fed by the colonizers, only the story
shaped by textbook manufacturers over the years.
Celebration
of a Massacre
It
may come as a surprise to some that the first official Thanksgiving
Day was held in 1637. Feasts of thankfulness were commonplace in both
European and Native American circles long before the first meeting
between the Wampanoag tribe, which inhabited southeastern
Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and the Pilgrims when they first
landed back in 1621. In 1637, Governor John Winthrop called for an
official day of thanks to celebrate the massacre of more than 700
people from the Pequot Tribe, a gruesome and generally unknown start
to such a widespread and popular holiday. “This day forth shall be
a day of celebration and thanksgiving for subduing the Pequots,”
read the proclamation.
If
Thanksgiving is to be celebrated accurately, it must be viewed
through a Native American lens. The best way to do that is to ask a
Native American.

Thoughts
and emotions communicated in this video, as well as in conversations
with Native Americans, are in stark contrast to the thoughts of
gratitude and love conventionally expressed by non-Native Americans
when it comes to Thanksgiving. A day seen by many as a day of

Colonization
Then and Now

Colonization
of this continent began long ago and continues to this day,
constantly shape-shifting but causing significant harm in all its
many guises. From the disappearance of Native women to the
fight for clean water,
and from the police murder of a Native boy to threats of the sale of
Native lands, the Native struggle against colonization is seemingly
unrelenting.
This
time last year, Native Americans and their allies were brutally
attacked by police while defending clean water at Standing Rock in
North Dakota. In freezing temperatures, water cannons, along with
rubber bullets, were used by militarized police to keep water
protectors at bay. Over the course of the entire struggle at Standing
Rock, excessive
force and violence were
used by police and hired security multiple times.

On
Thanksgiving Day last year, a protest in the town of Mandan, ND was
met with a show of force while water protectors on the front lines at
the Oceti Sakowin camp at Standing Rock were attacked by police for
crossing the river at the base of Turtle Island. Native Americans and
their allies persisted and found
reasons to be thankful in
the face of oppression.
Recently,
a 14-year-old Native American boy, Jason Ike Pero, was killed by an
Ashland County Sheriff’s Deputy on the Bad River reservation in
northwestern Wisconsin. The Bad River Band of the Lake Superior
Ojibwe has
requested the
Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice to open a
criminal civil rights investigation into the incident. They claim the
media and Wisconsin Department of Justice are trying falsely to
“describe Jason as being a troubled young man that acted in a
violent manner towards the deputy,” a tactic seen again and again
when it comes to police violence against minorities.
Just
this week, Nebraska’s Public Utility Commission approved the permit
for the Keystone XL pipeline, threatening Indigenous lands, despite a
major leak in
the Keystone pipeline just days prior. Pipelines and other
projects threaten Native
lands across the country, with the Trump administration seemingly
more focused on profit than on protecting both Native and national
lands.
Celebrating
Thoughtfully
Once
the truth is acknowledged, how do non-Natives move forward? The
Thanksgiving tradition is now so deeply rooted in American culture
that doing away with the holiday completely is unrealistic, and would
further do little to repair the harm that has been done over the
years.
Here
are some suggestions on how Americans can avoid the traditional
whitewash and hypocrisy, and tailor their Thanksgiving
celebrations thoughtfully:
Make
an informed decision with family and decide together whether
celebrating Thanksgiving is appropriate and comfortable.
When
it comes to halting and healing from colonization there is much work
to be done. Thanksgiving Day and it’s brutal history are an
excellent and timely place to begin.
TransCanada received its final required pipeline route approval, winning Nebraska’s permission to build its long-delayed Keystone XL crude oil pipeline across the state… just days after a 5,000 barrel spill in South Dakota shut the pipeline.
decision will almost certainly be challenged in court.
Just a few short days after 210,000 gallons of crude oil spilled in South Dakota, Bloomberg reports that Nebraska’s Public Service Commission voted three to two Monday, removing one of the last hurdles to the Calgary-based company’s construction of the $8 billion, 1,179-mile conduit (1,897-kilometer), which has been on its drawing boards since 2008.
For those who aren’t familiar with the project, the pipeline links Canada’s Alberta oil sands to U.S. refineries. While a portion of the pipeline has been operating, part of it had still not been approved by state regulators… until today’s decision by Nebraska.

However, as Bloomberg notes, the commission approved an alternative route.
Jane Kleeb, president of the environmental advocacy group Bold Alliance, said green-lighting an alternative route may have helped the commission reach a “middle ground solution.”
At the same time itopens new questions that she said her group would explore in federal court. She argued the secondary route wasn’t adequately vetted.
That view mirrored a dissenting opinion filed by Commissioner Crystal Rhoades. She wrote thatTransCanada didn’t meet “the burden of proof” in proving that the pipeline is in the state’s public interest, and she said the alternative route needed more study on both the state and federal level. For example, she said, Nebraska’s Department of Environmental Quality didn’t analyze the alternative route at all in its 2013 report.
“It is clear” TransCanada “never intended it to be considered,” Rhoades said.
In its post-hearing brief, TransCanada told the panel its “preferred route was the product of literally years of study, analysis and refinement by Keystone, federal agencies and Nebraska agencies,” and that no alternate route, even one paralleling the Keystone mainline as the approved path does, was truly comparable.
TransCanada’s share price is up on the news…
Notably,with Nebraska’s go-ahead in hand, TransCanada still must formally decide whether to proceed with construction on the line, which would send crude from Hardisty, Alberta, through Montana and South Dakota to Nebraska, where it will connect to pipelines leading to U.S. Gulf Coast refineries. The company’s open season for gauging producers’ interest closed late last month, and TransCanada executives have indicated that they’ve secured enough shipping commitments to make the project commercially worthwhile.
