De
moeder van de door Israël vermoorde 21 jarige medisch hulpverlener Razan
al-Najjar* heeft een ongelofelijk staaltje strijdbaarheid aan de
dag gelegd: afgelopen vrijdag gaf ze te kennen dat ze ondanks haar
verdriet het werk van haar dochter wil afmaken en was zij aanwezig bij de vreedzame protesten voor de grens van de Gazastrook met Israël.
Jammer
dat in de begeleidende tekst van de hieronder opgenomen video de
schrijver Ahmad Kabariti op Mondoweiss vreemd verwoord hoe Razan door
de laffe Israëlisch fascisten werd vermoord: volgens Kabariti werd Razan geraakt, terwijl ze aan het werk
was met hulpverlening aan een gewonde demonstrant, toen de zionistische
Israëlische psychopaten het vuur openden op een tiental
demonstranten. Ofwel: je zou hieruit kunnen concluderen dat Razan per ongeluk werd geraakt…..
Echter
andere bronnen stellen dat Razan met opzet onder vuur werd genomen,
lijkt me niet onwaarschijnlijk, aangezien Razan de zoveelste medische
hulpverlener is, die duidelijk herkenbaar als zodanig werd vermoord (naast deze hulpverleners werd ook een Palestijns-Canadese
arts door de Israëlische psychopaten vermoord)….. Daarnaast heeft het Israëlische leger afgelopen vrijdag met
opzet ambulances beschoten met traangas, een chemisch wapen……..
Op
dezelfde dag schoten de Israëlische fascistische zwijnen een journalist een
traangasgranaat in het gezicht, deze journalist ligt nu op de
IC……..
Intussen zijn er sinds maart al 127 ongewapende Palestijnse demonstranten door Israël vermoord, onder de slachtoffers, kinderen (o.a. een baby van 8 maanden), journalisten en zoals gezegd medisch hulpverleners, waar de laatste 2 groepen duidelijk als hulpverlener of journalist herkenbaar waren……. (en ja kinderen zijn uiteraard ook als dusdanig te herkennen…..)
De
allerhoogste tijd voor een internationale boycot van het uiterst gewelddadige fascistische

Yesterday
paramedics staged a march along the eastern borders of Gaza with the
family of the medic shot dead last week, Razan al-Najjar.
‘
The
21-year old paramedic was killed when Israeli troops opened live fire
on tens of protesters near the fence east of Khan Younis. Al-Najjar
was attending to wounded protesters.
Her
mother Sabreen explained why she was attending the demonstration,
below. “For me, coming here is more powerful than words. I came to
complete my daughter’s mission…. We will continue working
tirelessly until the whole world gets our message.”

Het
mocht tijd worden mensen, academici die zich i.p.v. te laten
misbruiken voor praatjes als dat we geen plek hebben voor
vluchtelingen, daarentegen de media en de straat zoeken om zich
uit te spreken tegen het vreselijke vluchtelingenbeleid dat bijna
wereldwijd wordt gevolgd, zeker in de VS en de EU, waar de laatste zelfs zo ziek was
om met Turkije, de notoire mensenrechtenschender en vervolger van
vluchtelingen, een smerige deal te sluiten waardoor
vluchtelingen zijn overgeleverd aan de grillen van de
reli-fascistische Erdogan dictatuur…….
De
EU wist van meet af aan dat Turkije de rechten van vluchtelingen op
grote schaal schendt, nog in 2013 gaf de EU een enorme bak geld aan
Turkije, om de omstandigheden te verbeteren waaronder vluchtelingen
gevangen werden gehouden in provisorische gevangenissen (waar hele families gevangen worden gehouden), gevangenissen waar het aan
alles ontbrak en ontbreekt….* De EU is ervan op de hoogte dat het grootste deel
van dat geld is verdwenen (in de zakken van Erdogan en zijn corrupte misdadigersbende…)…..
Toch
besloot de EU (waar vooral PvdA opperhufter Timmermans verantwoordelijk voor kan worden gesteld) ondanks deze kennis een deal met
Turkije te sluiten……. NB ook nog eens een deal die recht ingaat tegen het VN Vluchtelingenverdrag…….
Gevolg:
hele gezinnen zitten gevangen en weten bij god niet wanneer ze mogen
gaan, of over de grens worden gezet, veelal in gebieden waar men niet
veilig is. Er zijn zelfs rapporten over de Turkse grenswachten, vooral bestaande uit militairen, die schieten op vluchtelingen die zij in het vizier krijgen, nog ver
voor de Turkse grens……..
De
academici wijzen m.n. op het gevaar dat ontmenselijking
(dehumanisering) van vluchtelingen met zich meebrengt. Terecht
stellen zij, dat een dergelijke gang van zaken zelfs een gevaar is voor de maatschappelijke samenhang en groepen mensen tegen elkaar opzet……. Uiteraard zal in een dergelijke maatschappij de
vrijheid van meningsuiting nog verder in gevaar komen, zoals nu
mensen al bedreigd worden die het lef hebben zich in te zetten voor
vluchtelingen, door figuren die je niet anders dan als fascisten kan aanduiden (zoals de meeste EU politici minimaal fascistoïde neigingen hebben..)….
Niet
voor niets ook dat zich in praktisch heel de EU een langzame
fascismisering (of fascistificatie, wat je wilt) voltrekt, dit
terwijl in de geschiedenis de lessen voor het oprapen liggen, dit
vooral te bestrijden……. Hoeveel miljoen doden zijn er nog nodig
voordat we eindelijk beseffen dat fascisme met wortel en tak
uitgeroeid moet worden (en ik bedoel niet de aanhangers vermoorden),
voordat we beseffen dat de verschillende landen fout bezig zijn met
hun drang: -de grenzen te sluiten voor vluchtelingen, -het eigenbelang voorop te stellen** en de drang naar totale controle***, deze zaken kunnen alleen maar naar een politiestaat leiden, ook daarvoor liggen de voorbeelden hoog opgestapeld (net
als alle lijken die zo’n staat altijd weer ‘genereert’)…..
Jammer
dat Nederlandse academici zich niet achter de Belgische collega’s
hebben geschaard….. Te bang hun baan te verliezen of subsidies mis
te lopen in de toekomst, ofwel te laf om uit de ogen te kijken……

Meer
dan 1.000 academici keren zich in een opiniestuk tegen de tendens tot
ontmenselijking van vluchtelingen en mensen zonder papieren. ‘Wij,
als leden van de universitaire gemeenschap, kunnen niet langer
zwijgzaam toekijken.’
De
Belgische rectoren riepen via een open brief op tot menselijkheid.
Staatssecretaris voor Asiel en Migratie Theo
Francken floot
hen terug via Twitter. Wij – als leden van de universitaire
gemeenschap – kunnen niet langer zwijgzaam toekijken. Met deze brief
willen we weerwoord bieden aan twee soorten discours die aanleiding
gaven tot de gebeurtenissen van vorige week: de dehumanisering van
‘de Ander’ en de beperking van vrije meningsuiting. Samen vormen ze
een gevaarlijke cocktail – een die zich als een sluipend gif in onze
samenleving kan verspreiden, een democratie onderuit kan halen en het
meest onmenselijke in mensen naar boven kan halen.
Dehumanisering
van ‘de Ander’
Toen
de rectoren vorige week opriepen
tot meer menselijkheid lieten
ze niet alleen hun hart spreken, maar ook hun verstand (De Afspraak,
30-05-2018): Het afnemen van menselijkheid kan gevaarlijke gevolgen
hebben in onze samenleving.
Wanneer
we anderen zien lijden, hebben we als mens twee opties: ons
bekommeren om hun lot of onze blik afwenden. De eerste optie is
makkelijker wanneer we controle ervaren over de situatie en we het
gevoel hebben te kunnen helpen. Maar, wanneer er sprake is van
onmacht of controleverlies, dan is er kans op onverschilligheid, of
erger, dan keren we ons tegen het slachtoffer. “Heeft hij/zij de
situatie zelf niet in de hand gewerkt? Míj zou dit toch nooit
overkomen!” Deze gevoelens van onbegrip en minachting vormen de
voedingsbodem voor dehumanisering, dat is, voor het zien van ‘de
Ander’ als ‘minder mens dan wij’ (zie ook Le Soir 22-12-2015). Er
zijn in de sociale en psychologische wetenschappen honderden studies
verricht naar de effecten van dehumanisering op hoe we ‘de Ander’
behandelen. De resultaten zijn ronduit beangstigend (zie Haslam &
Loughnan, 2014 voor een overzicht). Dehumanisering geeft een
vrijgeleide om de Ander als minderwaardig te beschouwen en onze
morele kaders bij te stellen tot het punt dat Universele
mensenrechten niet langer gelden. Historische en actuele voorbeelden
hiervan zijn legio.
We
stellen vast dat vluchtelingen en migranten subtiel of minder subtiel
ontmenselijkt worden: ze worden voorgesteld als onderdeel van
(oncontroleerbare) vluchtelingenstromen en migratiegolven. En
migreren zelf wordt als een te vervolgen crimineel feit beschouwd,
getuige het gebruik van het woord ‘illegaal’ in plaats van ‘mensen
zonder papieren.’ Daarnaast worden ze vaak voorgesteld alsof ze
minder capaciteiten, daadkracht en subtiele emoties hebben dan
niet-migranten (voor het laatste voorbeeld: zie Tom
van Grieken in
De Afspraak 06-06-2018) en vinden sommigen het zelfs nuttig om een
prijs op hen te plakken. Deze bewoordingen en beelden, die talrijk
aanwezig zijn in de media, het politieke debat en publieke discours,
brengen dehumanisering dichterbij – zeker voor diegenen die nooit de
kans nemen of krijgen om de mens achter de vluchteling te ontmoeten.
Want, ontmoetingen met de Ander ontkrachten vaker dan niet eerdere
vooroordelen (Kende, Phalet, Van den Noortgate, Kara & Fischer,
2017).
Zonder
te ontkennen dat migratie een uitdaging vormt voor onze samenleving,
mag dehumanisering geen onderdeel vormen van hoe we ermee omgaan.
Dehumanisering vormt de context om weinig vragen te stellen bij
beleidsintenties die indruisen tegen het Europees Verdrag voor de
Rechten van de Mens, zoals die van Theo Francken in het kader van de
hervorming van het Europese migratiebeleid (DS 05-06-2018). En
indirect creëert dit discours een klimaat waarin polarisatie welig
tiert en actie en reactie elkaar haast onmiddellijk opvolgen. Zoals:
explosieve tweets die nadien moeten rechtgetrokken worden, een
praktijk van blaming-the-victim en het ontzeggen van emoties aan
rouwenden bij het graf van een kind.
Bovenstaande
gebeurtenissen zijn geen ‘toevalligheden’ of ‘ongevallen’ maar
symptomen van een dehumaniserend discours. Dit hebben de Belgische
rectoren terecht opgemerkt in hun brief aan premier Charles
Michel (30-05-2018;
zie ook de interviews met Herman
Van Goethem in
DS 30-05-2018 en Caroline
Pauwels in
DS 03-06-2018). In dit licht is de oproep van de rectoren voor meer
menselijkheid niet alleen hun volste recht, maar ook hun verdomde
plicht. Elke beweging in de richting van ontmenselijking moet gestopt
worden – stante pede.
Beperking
van vrije meningsuiting
De
reactie op deze open brief van de rectoren liet niet lang op zich
wachten en is een symptoom van een ander discours dat misschien wel
even gevaarlijk is: de beperking van de vrije meningsuiting. De tweet
van staatssecretaris voor Asiel en Migratie Theo Francken luidde
fors: “Als de rectoren een politiek spelletje willen spelen over
migratiedossiers, zullen ze de boomerang terug in hun gezicht
krijgen. Zowel inhoudelijk als publiek”. Alle latere pogingen
tot afzwakken van deze tweet ten spijt (bv. Twitter 30-05-2018), valt
deze uitspraak niet mis te verstaan als een dreigement aan het adres
van de rectoren en bijgevolg aan de hele academische gemeenschap.
Een
discours waarin andere meningen niet welkom zijn en dreigementen als
‘normaal’ antwoord beschouwd worden op een oproep tot menselijkheid,
kan leiden tot gevaarlijke situaties waarbij de academische vrijheid
wordt beknot. Dit draagt immers de kiemen van een nieuw normaal
waarin academici onder druk geen standpunten meer durven in te nemen.
Middenveldorganisaties die afhankelijk zijn van overheidssubsidies en
individuele overheidsambtenaren ervaren deze druk nu al. Indien zelfs
academische vertegenwoordigers geen recht meer hebben op tegenstem,
rest enkel de retorische vraag over welke vrijplaatsen de Staat nog
biedt als middenveld, cultuur, onderwijs en justitie steeds verder
worden ondergraven. Is een van de basiskenmerken van de democratie,
die we beweren te zijn, dan niet dat we het “‘eens zijn dat er
het recht is om het niet eens te zijn”?
Laat
ons duidelijk zijn: het discours van intimidatie ter beperking van de
vrije meningsuiting dulden we niet. Net zomin als we dehumanisering
ooit zullen toelaten. Onze studenten hebben dat goed opgemerkt: “De
academische wereld is geen schoothondje waartegen je als regeringslid
kan zeggen: ‘zitten en zwijgen'” (Apache, 04-06-2018). Nu niet,
en nooit! Het is onze taak als academici en burgers om de
samenleving, haar leiders en elkaar kritisch te bevragen, om
verschillende geïnformeerde meningen een stem te geven in het debat.
En om ervoor te zorgen dat we mens blijven voor en met elkaar.

Hare kwaadaardigheid en leeghoofd Haley, de VS ambassadeur bij de VN, liet de wereld (via de VN) weten dat er opgetreden moet worden in Libië……. E.e.a. naar aanleiding van een nieuw rapport over enorme mensenrechtenschendingen in Libië…….. Zo worden vrouwen uit andere Afrikaanse landen die wilden vluchten naar de EU misbruikt als seksslavinnen, zijn er nog steeds openbare slavenmarkten en worden vooral vluchtelingen onder erbarmelijke omstandigheden vastgehouden in provisorische gevangenissen, waar ze niet zelden zwaar worden gemarteld en zelfs vermoord, dit door het westen gesteunde terreurgroepen (‘gematigde rebellen’)…….
De VS is de oorzaak van de enorme chaos in Libië, na een opstand te hebben georganiseerd misbruikte de VS een VN resolutie om oorlog te gaan voeren (terwijl die resolutie daar niet voor was bedoeld) tegen het destijds rijkste land van Afrika…. Een land waarvan de leider, Khadaffi ook nog eens de petrodollar wilde afschaffen en wilde vervangen voor een munt die daadwerkelijk door goud wordt gedekt i.p.v. de gebakken lucht die de dollar ondersteunt…… Khadaffi had daar al een enorme voorraad goud voor aangelegd, die oh wonder is verdwenen na de oorlog die de VS losliet op Libië…..
Zoals al vaker op deze plek gezegd: in Libië waren onder Khadaffi scholing en gezondheidszorg gratis en waren de kosten voor huisvesting en elektriciteit/gas te verwaarlozen….. Kinderen die in het buitenland wilden studeren kregen een beurs van de staat, daarnaast werden de kosten voor huisvesting en de dagelijkse levenskosten vergoed…… Nu behoort Libië dankzij de VS (en een aantal NAVO landen, waaronder ons land) tot de armste landen van Afrika en is de chaos compleet, vrouwen hebben niets meer te vertellen en naar school gaan is er al helemaal niet meer bij, elektriciteit is maar enkele uren per dag voorhanden en water moet veelal met tankwagens worden aangevoerd…. Je snapt dat van wederopbouw amper nog sprake is en de Libiërs die eertijds bijna gratis woonden, moeten zelf opdraaien voor herstelwerk aan hun huis….. (althans als ze daar nog enigszins veilig kunnen wonen….)
Dit alles dankzij de VS en wie heeft nu juist over de door de VS veroorzaakte chaos en terreur een grote bek? Juist, Nikki Haley de VS oorlogshitser en grootlobbyist van het militair-industrieel complex in de VS………
Onbegrijpelijk dat het viswijf Haley niet door een groot deel van de VN leden te kakken wordt gezet….. Onbegrijpelijk dat de wereld niet massaal de VS gaat boycotten en sancties uitvaardigt tegen haar leidende elite, als je ziet dat andere landen om zaken die nog niet in de schaduw kunnen staan van wat de VS flikt, wel worden geboycot (en dat veelal op basis van leugens..)…. De VS begon alleen deze eeuw al 4 illegale oorlogen en heeft o.a. daarmee intussen al ruim meer dan 2 miljoen slachtoffers gemaakt (ofwel: vermoord…)……

PS: door de illegale oorlog van de VS en NAVO tegen Libië is in Mali de vlam in de pan geslagen en is ook daar oorlog ontstaan….. Voor de bloedige illegale oorlog tegen Libië moesten ook wij belastinggeld betalen, zo is het ook met Mali, waar Nederlandse troepen zijn gestationeerd……. Ja ja, wij betalen belasting waarmee illegaal oorlog wordt gevoerd en mensen worden afgeslacht…….. Sterker nog: het bedrag waarmee e.e.a. gebeurt wordt zelfs jaar na jaar verder verhoogd en dat onder druk van de grootste terreurentiteit op aarde: de VS……
Al
bijna een half jaar lang zit Ahed al-Tamimi, een Palestijns meisje van
17 jaar, gevangen in een militaire gevangenis in Israël…….
Zij
heeft geen Israëliër vermoord, noch dusdanig aangepakt dat de
persoon, in deze een zwaar bewapende militair, zich in het ziekenhuis
moest laten behandelen, nee, Ahed heeft een soldaat in het gezicht
geslagen, nadat een Israëlische militair haar neef in het gezicht
schoot met een rubberkogel, bij de zoveelste Israëlische overval in haar ouderlijk huis….. (waar de jongen een misvormd gezicht
aan over heeft gehouden….)
Intussen heeft de 17 jarige Ahed verzocht om een vervroegde vrijlating, een verzoek dat door de Israëlische ‘reclassering’ werd afgewezen……..
Ahed
zou een gevaar vormen voor Israël……. ha! ha! ha! ha! Typisch een
uiterst laf Israëlisch excuus dat kant noch wal raakt en dat in een land dat werd gestolen van de
Palestijnen……. Een uitspraak van een land dat zich bezighoudt met
apartheid en ronduit fascistische onderdrukking op de Palestijnen (waar Israëlische officieren nog
in de 90er jaren werden onderwezen uit het SS handboek, bijvoorbeeld
voor het controleren van een getto…… Door klokkenluidende
officieren naar buiten gebracht)
Afgelopen week werd een 21 jarige neef van Ahed neergeschoten, zijn familie werd 30 minuten lang verboden hem naar het ziekenhuis te brengen, waarna deze neef overleed, ofwel de zoveelste moord op naam van het Israëlische terreurleger (IDF)…..
Intussen zijn er sinds medio maart meer dan 130 Palestijnen vermoord door het Israëlische leger en zijn er vele duizenden gewonden gevallen onder ongewapende demonstranten…… Onder de doden een aantal kinderen, journalisten en medische hulpverleners, waaronder een arts……. De laatste 2 groepen, dus de journalisten en medisch hulpverleners waren duidelijk te herkennen aan hun kleding, bovendien waren ze bezig hulp te verlenen, me dunkt een enorme oorlogsmisdaad en een misdaad tegen de menselijkheid…. Gisteren heeft Israël zelfs met traangasgranaten op ambulances geschoten…….
Wat een vuile laffe honden, gadver!! (excuus aan de viervoeters, zij zijn edele dieren vergeleken bij deze zionistische zwijnen >> en excuus aan de zwijnen natuurlijk!)
Hoe is het mogelijk dat de EU n.a.v. het aanrichten van bloedbaden (massamoord) onder ongewapende Palestijnse demonstranten, Israël niet aan de paal heeft genageld wegens ongebreidelde terreur en aan de hand daarvan geen boycot en sancties heeft afgekondigd tegen de fascistische apartheidsstaat Israël?? De EU, daar je van het meer dan lamlendige neoliberale wankabinet Rutte 3 op dit gebied al helemaal niets hoeft te verwachten….. Als het Syrische leger op dezelfde manier (als Israël) een kwart van het aantal slachtoffers had gemaakt, zou de hele westerse wereld op haar kop staan >> wat een walgelijke hypocrisie……

Rejects Palestinian Teen Ahed Tamimi’s Request for Early Release
(MEMO) — A
parole board in the Rimonim prison rejected a request filed by
detained Palestinian teen Ahed Tamimi’s lawyer to reduce her
sentence and grant her early release.
Israel’s Channel
10 reported that Tamimi, who was sentenced in March to eight
months in prison, filed a request to be released before serving the
last third of the sentence, but a parole board rejected the request.
The
channel added that the Israeli public security service, Shin Bet, had
recommended earlier that Tamimi not be released early under
the pretext that she has “dangerous ideology” and
she should remain in prison for deterrence purposes.
During
her parole session, Tamimi stressed: “I will get out of prison with
my head up,” the
channel
reported.
Ahed
Tamimi was arrested on
19 December 2017, after her mother Nariman posted footage online of
the teenager confronting Israeli soldiers in the family’s backyard.
The
teen was convicted on four of the 12 charges against her including
incitement, aggravated assault and two counts of obstructing Israeli
soldiers. She was handed an eight-month
prison term following
a plea bargain.
Her
mother Nariman was sentenced to eight months in prison in addition to
a fine of 6,000 shekels ($1,724) and a three-year suspended sentence
for assisting in assaulting a soldier, obstructing a soldier and
incitement. Ahed’s cousin, Noor, was fined 2,000 shekels ($575).
Earlier
this week, Ahed’s cousin, 21-year-old Izz Al-Din Tamimi, was shot
dead by
Israeli soldiers in the occupied West Bank village of Nabi Saleh.
Activists said that Israeli occupation forces prevented Palestinian
medical teams from reaching the youth to help him before he was taken
away by the soldiers, according to WAFA.

af en toe laat een EU bons weten zwaar ontstemd te zijn, zoals PvdA
sierdrol Timmermans, maar daar blijft het bij, daar men als de dood
is dat landen uiteindelijk uit de EU zullen treden en dat precies had de EU
kunnen voorkomen, door die landen met een ferme punter onder de reet
de straat op te schoppen…… Schrijnend te zien dat de EU niet weet in
welke bochten het zich moet wringen om vooral dat te voorkomen,
ongelofelijk!!
De
hoogste tijd dat Nederland zich terugtrekt uit de EU, men heeft
Nederland toch nodig vanwege onze centrale ligging en (voor het
bedrijfsleven) geweldige infrastructuur!
Neem
ook het uitblijven van maatregelen tegen Spanje nadat de fascistische en corrupte regering Rajoy zo tekeerging tegen de Catalanen voorafgaand en

Lithuania
and Romania Knowingly Hosted Secret CIA Prisons
(MEMO) — Lithuania
and Romania violated the rights of two terror suspects by helping the
US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to torture them in “secret
rendition,” the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled on
Thursday.
The
European judges have ruled in two separate cases filed by victims
Zayn Al-Abidin Muhammad Husayn — also known as Abu Zubaydah — and
Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri in 2011 and 2012, respectively.
The
two were captured by the US after the 9/11 attacks and they are
currently being held at the Guantanamo Bay prison.
The
top European Court said both countries — Lithuania and Romania —
had assisted US’s ill-treatment of the two suspects at the
so-called “black sites” controlled by the CIA from 2004 to 2006
on their territories, exposing them to “a foreseeable serious risk
of further ill-treatment”.
The
ECHR ruling said Romania hosted a CIA prison in 2003-2005, where Abd
al-Nashiri was subjected to “an extremely harsh detention regime”
and suffered “inhuman treatment… which Romania had enabled by
co-operating with the CIA”.
The
same verdict was issued against Lithuania, concerning Abu Zubaydah.
The CIA operated a prison in Lithuania in 2005-2006.
Both
applicants complained that the respondent countries enabled the CIA
to detain them secretly on their territory, allowing the CIA to
subject them to torture, various other forms of mental and physical
abuse, incommunicado detention, and the lack of a possibility to
contact their families or the outside world.
They
also alleged that the two countries allowed them to be transported to
other CIA-run secret detention sites, exposing them to years of
further similar treatment.
Lastly,
they complained of the lack of a prompt and thorough investigation
into their allegations.
Abu
Zubaydah, a stateless Palestinian born in Saudi Arabia, is thought to
have been al Qaeda’s chief recruiter in the 1990s, and later became
a key organizer, linking Osama Bin Laden to other al Qaeda cells.
Saudi-born
Abd al-Nashiri led al Qaeda’s operations in the Gulf region,
according to US intelligence.
The
judges said they took their decision based on CIA documents,
according to which terror suspects were subjected to blindfolding or
hooding, solitary confinement, the continuous use of leg shackles,
and excessive exposure to noise and light.
The
court ordered Romania and Lithuania to pay Al Nashiri 100,000 euros
(EUR) in respect of non-pecuniary damages.
It
also ordered Lithuania to pay Abu Zubaydah 100,000 euros (EUR) in
respect of non-pecuniary damage, and EUR 30,000 in respect of costs
and expenses.
Het Israëlische hooggerechtshof heeft in een zaak, aangespannen door 2

snapt dat deze uitspraak door een hof van de fascistische apartheidsstaat Israël elke regel van de internationale rechtspraak tart en het
heeft dan ook helemaal niets meer met gerechtigheid, moraliteit of justitie in het algemeen te maken, sterker nog je zou kunnen stellen dat de rechters van dit
hof lak hebben aan mensenrechten, het oorlogsrecht en zoals gezegd het internationaal recht……..

Approves Army’s Use of Live Sniper Fire Against Gaza Protesters

than 60 Palestinians were killed in Gaza over two days (AFP)
(MEE) — Israel’s
Supreme Court on Thursday unanimously dismissed a petition by two
human rights groups that accused Israel’s military of violating the
law by using snipers and live ammunition against peaceful Palestinian
protesters in Gaza.
Defence
Minister Avigdor Liberman praised the ruling on Twitter: “The High
Court of Justice unanimously rejected the petitions of the pestering
left-wing Zionist organisations against the IDF’s strong and
steadfast stance against the enemy in Gaza.
“It
is time for you to understand that while you are trying to strengthen
our enemy, the IDF is also protecting you,” Liberman said,
referring to Israel’s military.
The
petition called out Israel for using “excessive force” and said
that its “open-fire policy is illegal”.
“The
military informed the supreme court that it shoots people in Gaza who
are allegedly ‘leading inciters or breachers of order’; they did
not claim that the people shot were armed or that they posed an
immediate threat to the lives of others,” it read.
“This
is a violation of international law, amounting to willful killing and
injury, and constituting war crimes under Article 8 of the Rome
Statute,” the petition said.
Major
protests took place across the Palestinian territories last Wednesday
as the United States transferred its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem
from Tel Aviv.
Smaller
protests took place last Thursday, the 70th anniversary of the Nakba,
or “catastrophe,” when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were
forced into exile as Israel was created in 1948.
More
than 60 Palestinians were killed along the Gaza border over two
days, and a teen who died on Wednesday was the first killed in West
Bank protests. More than 2,770 others were injured, including 225
children and 86 women.
The
casualties raised the death toll since 30 March, the day when the
six-week Gaza “Great March of Return” began, to 119.
The
Israeli army insists its actions are necessary to defend the border
and prevent mass infiltrations. Still, rights groups said many people
who were killed were nowhere near the fence that Israel had erected
on Palestinian territory in Gaza.
Palestinians
had at various times agreed to having the eastern part of Jerusalem
as their capital.
The
US embassy move led the Palestinian leadership to cut ties with US
President Donald Trump’s administration.

Prominent
Egyptian activist and blogger, Wael Abbas, was been arrested by
Egyptian authorities in the early hours of the morning.
Abbas
was taken during a 4am raid on his Cairo home and his computer and
mobile phone were seized. Following the raid, Abbas was blindfolded,
transported to an unknown location and prevented from contacting his
lawyer, according to the Arab Network for Human Rights (ANHRI).
Abbas
announced his arrest on his Facebook page
by writing “I am being detained.” His current whereabouts remains
unknown, prompting friends and followers to launch the Arabic hashtag
“where_is_Wael_Abbas”
on Twitter. Egyptian security officials have confirmed his arrest,
adding that Abbas was detained on accusations of disseminating false
news and joining an outlawed group.
Abbas
has long been vocal about the political situation in Egypt both
before and after the uprising of 2011, regularly campaigning against
torture and publishing graphic videos showing torture and police
abuse on his blog, misrdigital.com. In 2006, he was named among
the BBC’s “Most Influential Persons” and he
has previously received awards for his work from Human Rights Watch
and CNN. In 2007, his YouTube account was shut down,
resulting in the removal of hundreds of videos showing protests and
abuses by security forces. He has also been detained on a number of
previous occasions.
Former
managing editor of Daily News Egypt, Rana Allam, told Al
Jazeera: “Wael
writes all the time, and when he doesn’t write, he uses social
media to speak out and provides people with information about what is
happening around them. He doesn’t budge and has been doing what
many of us can no longer do. This is all very scary for the
government.”
Abbas’
arrest has been seen as the latest in a string of enforced
disappearances conducted by the Egyptian authorities. Journalists
have come under particularly stringent crackdowns, as just last month
Egyptian freelancer Ismail Alexandrani was sentenced to ten years in
prison by a military court in Cairo for being a member of a banned
organisation and spreading false news.
Deputy
Executive Director of the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ),
Robert Mahoney, said that “hauling a journalist before a military
court not only violates [Alexandrani’s] rights as a civilian but
sends a chilling message to the media that independent coverage of
political dissent and security threats will not be tolerated by
Egypt’s rulers.”
Enforced
disappearances have been widely used as a tool of repression under
the rule of Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, the current Egyptian president who
came to power my means of a military coup in 2013.
The
Egyptian Commissions for Rights and Freedoms (ECRF) documented 378
cases of
enforced disappearances between August 2016 and August 2017 alone,
though numbers are believed to be higher since many families fear
that reporting disappearances could inadvertently put loved ones in
jeopardy, according to Al-Monitor.

Hussein, 19, was raped by the man she was forced to marry in
Sudan. Three of his relatives pinned her down whilst her husband
forced himself on her. The
next time he tried to rape her, she fought back and killed him in
self defence. Last week, she was sentenced to death by hanging for
murder. Her
lawyers have 7 days left to appeal.
Badr
Eldin Salah, an activist from the Afrika Youth Movement who was in
the court says, “Noura’s lawyers say they plan to appeal against
the decision, but we
also need strong international support from
organisations such as the African Union, the United Nations and the
European Union to support her.”
Marital
rape and child marriage are not considered crimes in Sudan.But
as Equality Now’s Global Director Yasmeen Hassan says,
“Criminalisation of Noura for defending herself from assault
and, in particular a death sentence, would violate her rights under
the Sudanese Constitution and international law.”

Hussein, 19, was told she would be hanged after a Sharia court
convicted her of premeditated murder of her husband who she had been
forced to marry.
A
teenage bride has been sentenced to death for killing her husband who
raped her as male relatives pinned her down.
Noura
Hussein, 19, says her father made her marry the man – who was also
her cousin – when she was 16, but she refused to accept the union and
sought refuge with a relative for three years. She returned to her
family home on the outskirts of the Sudanese capital Khartoum in
April this year after her father said the marriage was cancelled. But
she found that she had been duped and preparations for her wedding
ceremony were under way.
Hussein
said that she refused to have sex with her husband after the
ceremony, but on the sixth day, he raped her as three of his male
relatives held her down to restrain her. The
following day, he attempted to rape her again and as she struggled to
stop him, she stabbed him, killing him. A Sharia court, which follows
Islamic religious law, found Hussein guilty of premeditated murder
last month and on Thursday officially sentenced her to death by
hanging.Her
lawyers have 15 days to appeal.
“Under
Sharia law, the husband’s family can demand either monetary
compensation or death. They chose death and now the death penalty has
been handed down,” said Badr Eldin Salah, an activist from the
Afrika Youth Movement who was in the court.
“Noura’s
lawyers say they plan to appeal against the decision, but we
also need strong international supportfrom
organisations such as the African Union, the United Nations and the
European Union to support her.”
Sudan
is ranked 165 out of 188 countries on the UN’s Gender Inequality
Index, which measures how women fare compared to men when it comes to
access to health, education, political participation and employment
opportunities. UN Women says violence against women and girls is
considered prevalent.
The country has not signed the Convention on
the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women and has
weak policies in place to protect them. Marital
rape and child marriage, for example, are not considered crimes in
the predominately Muslim African nation. Sudanese
law allows for the marriage of a girl once she hits puberty. It also
says a 10-year-old girl can be married by their guardian with the
permission of a judge. One in three Sudanese women are married before
the age of 18, says UN Women.
Campaign
groups such as Equality Now say they are writing to Sudanese
President Omar al-Bashir to plead for clemency, arguing that the
judgement is against the Sudanese constitution.
“Noura
is a victim, not a criminal, and should be treated as such.In
many countries, victims like Noura would be provided services to
ensure that they overcome the trauma of their experiences,” said
Equality Now’s Global Director Yasmeen Hassan.
“Criminalisation
of Noura for defending herself from assault and, in particular a
death sentence, would violate her rights under the Sudanese
Constitution and international law.”

started at dawn. A vehicle full of Honduran police officers showed up
at around 5 am on May 3 in front of the community protest camp in
Pajuiles, where residents have been present day and night for more
than a year to prevent the passage of hydroelectric dam construction
machinery. Less than two hours later, the whole area was crawling
with hundreds of members of various police units, including regular
national police, the Police Investigations Directorate, the elite
COBRAS unit and the TIGRES special forces, which are heavily
supported by the US and trained by Green Berets from the 7th Special
Forces Group (Airborne).
“It
was like a war zone,” Pajuiles community leader Albertina López
told Truthout.
Police
forces lined the immediate area along the nearby highway that runs
from El Progreso up to Tela, along the Caribbean coast in the
Atlántida Department. Soon they were also lining the road past the
camp and up to the contested construction site of the Mezapa River
dam. They showed up in convoys, escorting machinery, construction
materials and company personnel up to the site, where the Honduran
company HIDROCEP has been trying to build a 1.3 megawatt dam.
“People
were scared,” said López. Nevertheless, she and a few other
women made an attempt to stop the machinery, lying down in the road
in front of the protest camp to try to stop the machinery’s passage.
“That’s when they started firing tear gas at us,” she said.
People scattered, ushering a 75-year-old protester and children to
safety, but López and others maintained their permanent presence at
the roadside resistance camp throughout the police operations that
lasted two full days.
State
violence against community resistance to natural resource
exploitation projects continues unabated in Honduras. The recent
crackdown in Pajuiles to impose a fiercely contested hydroelectric
dam project is just one of the latest incidents, but it provides a
clear example of the involvement of US-trained and -supported special
forces in repression against community activists.
Honduran
Security Forces Trained by Green Berets

“Honduran
security forces, including those receiving funding and training from
the United States, have been implicated in human rights violations in
recent years,” Christine Wade, a Washington College professor of
political science and international studies, told Truthout. “The
targeting of environmental and land rights activists is just one
facet of this.”
“Despite
these abuses, funding continues to flow from the US, our military
installations remain open to train Honduran security forces and
impunity reigns. Unless the US acts decisively to suspend aid to
security forces, these abuses will continue,” said Wade.
The
Intelligence and Special Security Response Group Units (TIGRES, an
acronym that spells “tigers” in Spanish) were created back
in 2013, when current Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández
proposed a bill as president of Congress. The initial proposal was
for more of an explicitly military-police hybrid force that would
have been transferred from civilian oversight to the Secretariat of
Defense in times of war, but those elements were removed from the
bill before its passage. The TIGRES now fall under the police
Directorate of Special Forces.
Training
of the first TIGRES recruits, drawn from military and police forces,
began in 2014, the year Hernández took office as president of
Honduras. They were trained by Green Berets from the 7th Special
Forces Group (Airborne) and Colombian members of the Comandos Jungla
special police force. The same US and Colombian forces trained the
following year’s recruits in a 12-week Comando basic course. Some
TIGRES agents also received advanced training from Green Berets at
the Eglin Air Force Base in Florida in 2015.
In
their first year in action, the TIGRES were implicated in a massive
theft and corruption scandal. More than 20 TIGRES agents were
suspended following
the theft of more than $1 million during operations against a drug
trafficker in western Honduras. Late last year, as reported
by The Intercept,
TIGRES were involved in raids and arrests targeting people who had
been protesting the contested outcome of the November 2017 elections
that officially resulted in Hernández’s re-election amid widespread
reports of vote-rigging and fraud.

On
April 10 of this year, a new TIGRES base, completed with US
financing, was inaugurated in El Progreso. It is the second TIGRES
base, joining the installations 25 miles west of Tegucigalpa, the
Honduran capital. High-ranking Honduran and US government officials
attended the inauguration in El Progreso, including Honduran
President Hernández; Richard Glenn, acting deputy assistant
secretary of state in the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law
Enforcement Affairs; and Heide Fulton, the chargé d’affaires at the
US Embassy in Honduras, and currently the highest-ranking embassy
official.
Less
than one month later, TIGRES were involved in the crackdown in
Pajuiles, only 23 miles north of the new installations. Media reports
and Honduran and US officials highlight the TIGRES’ focus on
combatting drug trafficking and organized crime, but on May 3, they
were escorting dam company personnel and construction machinery along
with other police forces that cracked down on community protest.
The
Honduran Secretariat of Security did not provide a response to
Truthout’s requests for comment or even confirm basic details, such
as a ballpark figure of how many total police participated in the
operations in Pajuiles. López, other local residents, and human
rights observers estimated that approximately 250 to 300 members of
the various police forces and units were present.
The
US government did respond and is aware of the deployment of TIGRES to
Pajuiles. “There was no U.S. involvement in this operation,”
a Department of State spokesperson wrote in a response to Truthout’s
request for comment.
“While
we support the TIGRES professional development and specific missions
related to key U.S. interests in Honduras, particularly combating
drug trafficking and organized crime, we do not dictate their
deployment or other operations they conduct. We aggressively review
any allegation of wrong doing by the TIGRES or any other units of the
security forces we support, irrespective of whether it is a mission
we actively supported,” the Department of State spokesperson
wrote.
Ryan
Morgan, a member of the in-country human rights accompaniment team of
Witness for Peace, a US nongovernmental organization, witnessed the
presence and participation of TIGRES agents in operations in Pajuiles
on May 3, following his arrival at the community a couple of hours
after the police convoys began escorting the dam machinery.
“There
were a lot of US taxpayer dollars in Pajuiles that day,” Morgan
told Truthout. With regard to the TIGRES, Morgan believes their
presence there should be considered problematic even by US lawmakers
and embassy officials who believe their mandate is important for US
national security in terms of fighting drug trafficking and organized
crime.
“It
would be very hard to explain or justify the involvement of the
TIGRES in Pajuiles,” said Morgan. “This use of the TIGRES
should outrage even people who on paper support their existence and
US support for them,” he said.
TIGRES
agents were the first police forces Morgan and his colleague saw when
they were arriving at Pajuiles. They were stationed along the highway
approximately a quarter of a mile south of the road leading to the
protest camp, where a police roadblock was set up nearby. Morgan and
his colleague stayed at the camp all day, until 5 pm or so. Convoys
and machinery came and went up to the construction site, but by the
camp itself it was mostly COBRAS who were guarding the area, armed
with riot gear, tear gas and maybe only a pistol or two among the
dozen or so agents who swapped out every two hours. Escorts for dam
machinery were also largely provided by COBRAS, said Morgan, but that
changed later in the afternoon.
At
approximately 3 pm, a convoy came down from the dam construction
site, reportedly escorting HIDROCEP executive Jason Hawit. Morgan
didn’t see whether Hawit was in fact there or not, but he did note
the difference in police forces accompanying the vehicles.

“I
was really surprised to see two or three trucks full of TIGRES, all
with automatic weapons, obviously, that had apparently been up at the
construction site, providing security there all day,” Morgan
told Truthout. Shortly thereafter, TIGRES also showed up in the area
of the protest camp. “At 3:30 or so, rather than a new unit of
COBRAS coming to relieve the one that was there, it was a mixed unit
of COBRAS and TIGRES,” he said. As with those providing escort,
the TIGRES carried automatic weapons, not riot gear. The TIGRES
presence continued until the following night, on May 4.
Earlier
in the morning of May 3, before Morgan arrived, police arrested a
local Pajuiles resident while he was filming the security forces’
operations. Albertina López’s brother Nolberto López was taken into
custody, accused by police of causing a public scandal. According to
locals, however, he was arrested simply for recording police. He was
released without charges later that afternoon. He is far from the
first to suffer criminalization related to the protest camp, however.
His sister was acquitted, but 11 Pajuiles residents are still facing
trial.
Organized
in local community groups by sector, Pajuiles residents are members
of the Broad Movement for Dignity and Justice (MADJ), which grew out
of a prosecutor’s hunger strike against corruption and now also
focuses on natural resources and human rights issues. MADJ leaders
and community members alike have been subject to a barrage of
threats, intimidation and attacks, particularly in connection with
the dam protest camps in Pajuiles and in Arizona, also located in the
Atlántida Department.
“Pajuiles
has been subject to intense repression,” MADJ coordinator of
organization Saúl Ávila told Truthout. Many residents still face
trial for criminal charges linked to the camp, and there have been
past instances of police repression and militarization in Pajuiles.
One
local resident, Geovanny Díaz, who had participated in the dam
resistance camp was among the more than 35 people killed during the
nationwide violent crackdown on protests against election fraud. Díaz
was dragged
out of his home in
Pajuiles by men dressed in police uniforms, shot and killed
shortly after a protest ended in
the wee hours of January 23.
“There’s
collusion between the dam company and state forces, but local
divisions also aggravate the situation,” said Ávila. “The
[company] completely divided the upper communities and turned them
against the lower communities, which are the communities that will
suffer from water shortages if the hydroelectric dam is built,”
he said.
The

Alex
Main visited Pajuiles this past March for the one-year anniversary of
the protest camp. A senior associate at the Center for Economic and
Policy Research (CEPR) based in Washington, DC, Main has reported on
Honduran movements and US aid to security forces for years.
US
congressional efforts to cut or condition security assistance to
Honduras began in earnest back in 2010, according to Main. At the
time, there was increased attention to the country in the wake of the
June 2009 coup d’état that removed the elected president from office
and led to a marked spike in homicides, state violence and murders of
activists. Community-based land, environmental and Indigenous
activists have been particularly targeted.
“Given
that the situation has only grown worse since then, and that
horrifyingly frequent reports of police and military involvement in
activist killings have been met with near impunity, members of
Congress have continued to demand full suspension of security
assistance to Honduras in increasing numbers,” Main wrote in an
email to Truthout.
One
initiative to that effect is the Berta Cáceres Human Rights Act, a
bill named in honor of the well-known Honduran Indigenous rights and
social movement activist murdered in 2016. “[It] would instruct
the US administration to suspend all security assistance to Honduras
and to veto any loans from multilateral development banks to Honduran
police and military forces. It has so far garnered 70 House
co-sponsors,” Main noted.

At
the moment, legislative action with regard to aid to Honduran
security forces is limited to elements incorporated into
appropriations legislation that condition half of US aid to Honduras
on Department of State certification of compliance with a series of
loosely worded human rights measures.
“These
or similar requirements have been incorporated into appropriations
legislation for a number of years now, and have had no observable
positive effect to date,” wrote Main. “The last time they
certified the government’s compliance was actually just two days
after last year’s incredibly problematic elections, providing the
government with a needed boost just as they began deploying security
agents, including TIGRES, military police and conventional military
troops, to violently repress protests.”
Back
in Pajuiles, many residents are still shaken from the recent massive
deployment of security forces there. Police took photographs of
protest camp participants and community leaders during the
operations, and they have been informed by other residents that death
threats against them continue to circulate, said Albertina López.
They’re planning to formally report the latest threats to Honduran
authorities, but don’t have much faith it will result in any action.
“State
institutions don’t function. They don’t function at all — not for
us,” said López. However, López and other activists at the
protest camp are not giving up and have vowed to resist the dam. “We
continue the struggle,” she said.

Drones
over Gaza: How Israel tested its latest technology on protesters
The
mismatch between Palestinian protesters and Israeli forces has often
been likened to David and Goliath. Now, Goliath doesn’t even need
to enter the field of combat.
In
a new innovation, small drones have been used by Israel’s military
to drop tear gas on Palestinian protests along the Gaza Strip’s
border with Israel and in the occupied West Bank.
First
seen in early March, when Lebanon’s
Al-Mayadeen TV filmed
a group of protesters in Gaza as they were targeted by one, the
gas-carrying drones were used heavily in protests in the coastal
enclave and the occupied West Bank on Monday and Tuesday.
There
appear to be three types of drones being used to disperse the gas.
The
first, developed by Israeli company ISPRA and known as the “Cyclone
Riot Control Drone System”, is a small drone with rotas that
carries a box containing nine light aluminium cartridges which burn
up after they are released.
However,
two other models appear to have been used, which experts told MEE
have never been seen before.
One
is a drone that releases gas directly from the craft, like an
aerosol, dispersing a cloud on those below.
The
other, a potentially far more dangerous device, is a helicopter-style
drone which carries rubber bursting grenades with metal tops that
disperse gas as they fall.

As
the Great March of Return protests came to a crescendo earlier this
week, the third type of drone became by far the most regularly used
of the three, according to experts spoken to by MEE.

This
drone does not appear to be a sophisticated device.
“It’s
more sophisticated [than a commercial drone] – it’s not something
that you would buy cheaply on Amazon, but I think it’s not far from
it,” Itay Mack, an Israeli human rights lawyer and activist who
tracks Israel’s military exports, told MEE.
The
drone appears to be fitted with a spring-loaded rack, which opens to
drop a number of tear gas grenades.
“I
think the pins are manually pulled from the grenades when they are
secured in the rack before takeoff,” James Bevan, executive
director of Conflict Armament Research, told MEE.
The
rack is then released once the drone is positioned over the area
where the controller wishes to disperse the gas.
“It
may be something as simple as a retracting pin attached to a
servomotor, which is wired into the drone’s circuits,” Bevan says.
“This is what Islamic State [IS] used in Iraq and Syria.”
According
to Bevan, IS is the only group for which there is physical evidence
of these small, helicopter-type drones’ use in combat situations,
mostly seen in Iraq’s Mosul and Syria’s Tal Afar.
“We
see drone use in other theatres, including by non-state groups, but
these have been military fixed-wing drones,” he said.
New
range, new danger
Monday’s
demonstrations in Gaza coincided with the ceremony marking the
official opening of the United States’ new embassy in Jerusalem
while Tuesday’s protests marked 70 years since the Palestinian Nakba
– or Catastrophe – when 750,000 Palestinians were forced from their
homes in historic Palestine in 1948.
Over
the two days, 62 Palestinians were killed by live fire or tear gas
inhalation, as Israeli forces attempted to quell the protests.
At
least 980 Palestinians were wounded by tear gas dropped on the
protests on Monday, Gaza’s health ministry said, including many
minors.
The
drones have given the Israeli forces new range. Previously, gas
canisters had only been fired into the Gaza Strip from vehicles on
the Israeli side of the divide.
The
large fence that separates the besieged enclave from Israel restricts
the military’s ability to fire gas across the border, unlike in the
West Bank where soldiers often fire the canisters from specially
equipped rifles.
Israeli
forces rarely make ground incursions into the Gaza Strip, which they
pulled out of in 2005, while they maintain a significant presence the
occupied West Bank.
This
new range has allowed the Israelis to target areas far from the
flashpoint border area, places more likely to be populated by
families, minors and the elderly.
Gas
a threat to the vulnerable
“The
problem with gas grenades is they are especially dangerous to small
children and elderly people,” Mack said.
The
gas can be fatal in two ways: suffocation and overdosing on the
chemicals used.
The
deaths of several Palestinians in the West Bank has been linked to
tear gas inhalation in recent years. In 2015 an eight-month-old
baby in
the village of Beit Fajjar died after soldiers fired tear gas into
his home
And
in 2014, Palestinian minister Ziad
Abu Ein died
from complications related to tear gas inhalation after attending a
protest near the village of Turmusaya.
A
report last year described the Aida refugee camp in the southern West
Bank as the “community most exposed to tear gas in the world”.
Reports
emerged on Tuesday that an eight-month-old baby, Leila al-Ghandour,
was also killed by tear gas in the Gaza Strip. She is said to have
been exposed to the gas while at a protest site far from the Israeli
separation fence, though at the time of publication this could not be
independently verified by MEE.
Indiscriminate
projectiles
Though
made of rubber, the gas grenades dropped from the drones are weighty
and have a metal top.
The
Israeli military has regulations banning firing such projectiles
directly at people. Gas canisters fired from specially fitted rifles
are particularly dangerous at short range.
The
long-range 40mm grenade launchers used by Israel are also considered
dangerous because they can be fired with only limited accuracy.

A
spokesman from Omega
Research Foundation (ORF Ltd), which researches the manufacture, trade in and use of, military,
security and police technologies, told MEE that drones can be used to
increase accuracy when dispersing tear gas.
“On
a purely technical level, the drones can hover at a safe height to
drop the grenades and target individuals that pose a threat,” the
spokesman, who wished to remain anonymous, said.
However,
video footage of this week’s protests appears to show the canisters
dropping from a considerable height, reducing accuracy and increasing
the risk of head injuries.
Not
a threat
Israel
has repeatedly accused the protesters in Gaza of attempting to cross
the border fence and lay explosives in Israeli territory. It says the
use of live fire and tear gas is justified by the threat protesters
pose by breaching the barrier.
Israeli
police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told the AFP news agency previously
that the drones have “the capability of flying over certain zones
and certain areas and then letting go of tear gas in areas that we
want to prevent protesters from reaching”.
However,
MEE reporters in Gaza and the West Bank and videos emerging online
suggest Israeli forces targeted areas far from the border area and
people who did not appear to pose a threat.

The entire Israeli enterprise is built on a war against truth. It not only spends hundreds of millions of dollars in propaganda (hasbara) but also deliberately targets journalists.
On
Monday, an MEE reporter was gassed by a drone along with several
other members of the media. The area targeted was clearly populated
by many journalists, with vehicles prominently displaying “Press”.
Video
footage also showed a drone dropping gas on a communal tent full of
women and children, apparently more than metres from the border.

The
deployment of gas grenades from above appears in some situations to
have sown confusion and fear among crowds, rather than dispersing
them to other locations.
In
a demonstration on Tuesday near the illegal Israeli settlement Beit
El in the West Bank at least four drones deployed gas directly onto
protesters.
A
20-year-old protester there, who wished to remain anonymous, told MEE
that “panic ensued” when the drones appeared in the sky.
“People
were running in all directions unsure of where to go as the drones
hovered above our heads waiting to drop tear gas,” the protester
told MEE.
“The
Israelis have only begun using these drones in the last few weeks.
They are indiscriminate, and show no mercy.”
According
to Gabriel Avner, an Israeli security consultant, Israel’s policy
in Gaza is a departure from its usual crowd-control methods.
“The
situation in Gaza right now is completely different to what is
happening anywhere else… they’re thinking of this as a
full-on conflict zone,” he told MEE.
“There
is some cause for concern because the rules of engagement are
hard-coded,” he said, adding that the Israeli military needed to
make sure soldiers were properly trained to understand the potential
consequences when new technology such as this is introduced.
‘Kite
terrorism’
The
use of drones is not limited to dispersing tear gas, however.
Some
Palestinians have been flying kites across the border, often
incendiary ones carrying burning coals with the objective of starting
bush fires in Israeli territory.
According
to Israeli daily Haaretz,
the Israeli military has enlisted amateur racer drones to intercept
the kites, using the rotas and fish hooks attached to the crafts to
cut their cords and send them off course.

The
drones intercepting the kites are operated by hobbyists, and can
reach speeds of 110 metres per second, Haaretz reported.
One
of the kites that reached the Israeli side of the divide carried a
suspected remote-controlled bomb, the paper reported.
While
the device did not explode, and police sappers said it may have been
a dud or a fake, the paper speculated it could herald a new phase
along the border of what it called “kite terrorism”.
Many
of the kites are harmless, however, with protesters often using them
to fly the Palestinian flag.
If
not intercepted by drones, these kites are often shot down using live
fire.
Technology
to sell
Israel
is one of the world’s leading countries in drone technology.
It
has been using unmanned aerial vehicles since the late 1970s, when
they were used by the military for surveillance in south Lebanon, and
were widely deployed in Israel’s 1982 invasion of its neighbour to
the north.
Mack,
the human rights lawyer, noted that Israel has previously used
conflicts to showcase its weaponry with the intention of selling it
on.
Israel
sells its arms and technology to many countries. Last month
the German
Defence Ministry announced
its intention to sign a $1bn contract with Israel Aerospace
Industries to lease unmanned aerial vehicles.
Tel
Aviv has been criticised for selling
weaponry to
governments with poor human rights records, most
recently Myanmar,
which has reportedly bought Israeli military equipment as it conducts
an operation against the Rohingya minority. The Myanmar government’s
assault against Rohingya communities has been widely described as
ethnic cleansing.
Israeli
company Global
Group also
sold surveillance drones to the beleaguered and cash-strapped
government of South Sudan for millions of dollars in December.
The
South Sudanese government’s forces have been accused by the UN of
serious human rights abuses since its civil war broke out in 2013.
The
Israeli military’s use of drones to drop gas in Gaza and the West
Bank suggests that the models sold to South Sudan could equally be
adapted to release tear gas or other payloads.
“Larger
commercial drones … are designed to carry a range of payloads
(large cameras for sports events, crop-spraying attachments), so are
designed to operate payload functions remotely. This would be very
easy to configure,” Bevan said.

‘Israël gebruikt nieuw chemisch wapen tegen Palestijnse demonstranten in de Gazastrook‘ (Wel aandacht voor ‘Syrische gifgasaanval’ in Douma, maar als Israël daadwerkelijk dit wapen inzet, blijft het doodstil….Israël, samen met Egypte, de twee landen die nog steeds chemische wapens ontwikkelen, produceren, opslaan en…. exporteren!! Wellicht leveren deze landen ook aan de terreurgroepen, ofwel de ‘gematigde rebellen’ in Syrië, die met instemming van het westen over voorraden gifgas beschikken…… Zowel Israël als Egypte staan achter de psychopathische terreurgroepen in Syrië, groepen die, zoals gezegd, in het westen ‘gematigde rebellen’ worden genoemd…..)
PS: de Israëlische luchtmacht, één van de terreurorganisaties die Israël ‘rijk is’, heeft een aantal uren geleden een aanval uitgevoerd op de Gazastrook, waar het ‘posities van Hamas’ zou hebben getroffen aldus berichtte de BBC…….. Heb geen berichten over slachtoffers kunnen vinden op het net, daar de BBC meldde dat er geen slachtoffers zijn gevallen bij die aanval.
