De
EU commissie voor Juridische Zaken zal volgende week stemmen over
artikel 13 van de auteursrechten wet.
Als
dit artikel wordt goedgekeurd zal een algoritme automatisch inhoud
filteren op een platform dat uploads van het publiek toestaat. Echter
met dit artikel ligt de weg open voor censuur op het internet daar
men ‘op safe zal spelen’ en elke inhoud zal verwijderen die riskant kan zijn voor het bewuste platform (v.w. juridische claims), zonder dat je daar ook maar
iets aan kan doen…….
E.e.a.
zou een zware aantasting zijn van onze vrijheid op meningsuiting en met dit artikel kan men zelfs kritische sites van het net halen, sites die het fake news (nepnieuws) van de reguliere media aan de kaak stellen….
Er
zijn maar een paar EU parlementariërs nodig om dit tegen te houden,
dus doe mee aan de opgezette Twitteractie waarmee men die paar
parlementariërs wil overhalen tegen te stemmen.
Een
coalitie van digitale rechten groepen en groepen die strijden voor
het recht op vrijheid van meningsuiting is al jaren bezig tegen dit
onzalig voornemen.

ajb mee voor een open internet zonder bemoeienis van bedrijven en
overheden en geeft het door!

European Parliament’s Committee on Legal Affairs will vote on
Article 13 of the new EU Copyright Directive next week. This is
a rotten proposal to mandate automated
filters for all websites that allow public uploads, with no due
process or remedies for people who are censored.
The
proposal requires almost all websites to filter all content put
online by people like you and me, excessively restricting our free
speech before we can even use it. The
system will rely on algorithms that will be programmed to “play
safe” and delete anything that could be risky for the platform.
Our
allies tell us that the committee vote is incredibly tight; we may
only need to help sway one or two more MEPs* to make
them delete Article 13.
An
amazing coalition of digital rights and freedom of expression groups
have been campaigning on this EU directive for years. Thanks to their
tireless work, there’s a good chance that this proposal can be
defeated next week.

Facebook aankondigde haar ‘trending nieuws’ onderdeel te laten vallen, vanwege
het ‘hoge gehalte aan fake news’ (nepnieuws) en deze te vervangen voor een
‘breaking news’ programmering*, heeft dit frauderende mediaorgaan
besloten nieuws shows te gaan brengen.
Ter verduidelijking van het ‘breaking news’ platform: dit ‘breaking news’ onderdeel wordt samengesteld door 80 regulaire mediaorganen, je weet wel media die zich keer op keer juist schuldig maken aan het brengen van fake news……. (neem de berichtgeving voorafgaand, tijdens en zelfs na de illegale oorlogen die de VS is begonnen in bijvoorbeeld Afghanistan, Irak, Libië en Syrië……)

to Fund Original News Shows From “Trustworthy” Outlets Like
CNN and Fox News
In
an effort to improve its credibility, Facebook is launching original
news shows with mainstream networks like ABC, Fox
News,
and CNN.
Amid ongoing controversies and
widespread public distrust of the platform — as well as widespread
public apprehension toward the political, media, and corporate
establishment at large — it is unclear how Facebook intends to
leverage these outlets to build trust.
Variety,
an entertainment industry outlet, reported Wednesday
that the new effort “is
partly aimed at driving up viewing on its Facebook
Watchplatform
— but it also is supposed to demonstrate the social-media giant’s
commitment to funding trustworthy journalism.”
The
initiative, to be introduced this summer, is led by a mainstream
reporter-turned-Facebook employee. Campbell Brown, Facebook’s head
of global news partnerships, was previously a host for CNN and
worked as a reporter for NBC
News.
“Given
this is our first step into this, we wanted to have a diverse slate
of shows that could deliver different things,” she
said of the new program. Other participants include Univision, Mic,
and ATTN.
“Earlier
this year we made a commitment to
show news that is trustworthy, informative, and local on Facebook. As
a part of that commitment, we are creating a dedicated section within
Watch for news shows produced exclusively for Facebook by news
publishers. With this effort, we are testing a destination for high
quality and timely news content on the platform.”
The
move comes as Facebook moves to discontinue its “trending news”
service, which has been accused of spreading fake information (the
platform will instead implement a “breaking news” feature,
working with 80 different outlets around the world in a project
separate from it’s mainstream Watch programming).
To
be sure, Facebook has served as a breeding ground for wildly
inaccurate “news” stories from highly questionable outlets.
However,
despite Facebook’s stated intention to combat this type of fake
news, it is no secret that outlets like CNN and Fox
News have disingenuously helped
perpetuate society-wide submission to corrupt, exploitative agendas
by baiting the public with divide and conquer tactics
and distractions.
CNN,
which dubs itself “the
most trusted name in news,” spends
much of its airtime obsessing over Russia, the Mueller investigation,
Stormy Daniels, and other topics that are comparatively superficial
in light of bipartisan policies that destroy the world and infringe
upon people’s basic rights. They have been caught on multiple
instances pushing incorrect
information and
selectively reporting stories. For example, one “exclusive report”
on Libya’s burgeoning human slave trade failed to acknowledge that
a major catalyzing force for the trade’s growth was the Obama
administration’s toppling of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
Fox
News,
too, is an egregious perpetuator of manipulative narratives, and the
outlet’s hosts spend much of their time covering petty issues. In
one instance, earlier this year, Fox
and Friends pundits
had a meltdown over
the NFL’s decision to broadcast potential national anthem protests
at the Super Bowl (they did not actually occur). Fox was
also a major contributor to
the push for the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
Both outlets,
along with MSNBC, ABC, NBC,
and CBS have
been found to
spread falsehoods on a regular basis as pundits prattle on, peddling
establishment viewpoints.
These
mainstream outlets also push emotionally charged, vitriolic opinions,
and to a large extent, these divides are evident in the comment
sections of political Facebook posts.
Despite
Facebook’s cozying up to mainstream outlets, Variety reports
that both Fox
News and CNN previously complained about
Facebook’s approach to news. “It
was important to us that there was a fair value exchange, which there
hasn’t always been,” said
Andrew Morse, CNN’s
EVP and GM of CNN Digital
Worldwide, while speaking about the new programming deal. Anderson
Cooper will host CNN’s
Facebook show while Shep Smith will helm Fox’s.
The
move follows not only claims of Facebook spreading dis- and
mis-information but also suppressing reach
for many large pages not deemed “trustworthy.” Independent news
organizations, in particular, have complained that their followers
now rarely see their posts.
Regardless
of this new program, public trust in mainstream news sources at large
continues to drop.
While this seems promising, unfortunately, much of this distrust is
also associated with part of the population’s unquestioning trust
in President Donald Trump as many of his supporters tend to reject
news that discredits or criticizes him.
As
Facebook continues to serve as a mouthpiece for the establishment —
and as it continues to work with
the government to police the internet — the need for decentralized
alternatives like Steemit, Minds, and othersthat
do not censor their users or promote propaganda is increasingly
apparent.

that connects people to the latest breaking and important news from
local publishers in their city, as well as updates from local
officials and organizations.

Video in Watch: We will soon have a dedicated section on Facebook
Watch in the US where people can view live coverage, daily news
briefings and weekly deep dives that are exclusive to Watch.
Facebook just announced they’re removing trending topics and replacing it with news from publishers in your city, updates from local officials and organizations. The obvious takeaway here is that Facebook wants to control the conversation. Who believes that the news orgs they choose will be fair and balanced? No one. Instead of seeing what is naturally igniting dialogue around issues you’re going to get Facebook approved propaganda.
To recap – you’re going from user controlled trends that honestly represent the conversation, views and dialogue of users to Facebook approved outlets TELLING you what you need to hear. They will only share the most sanitized positions that suit their biases.
Make no mistake: This is entirely driven by political aims. Facebook is VERY unhappy with how their platform drove conversation during the 2016 election. This is their attempt to slow the spread of information and political views they don’t like on their platform.
Who’s curating the approved local publishers, news orgs, local officials and organizations? Certainly not a politically neutral or unbiased team and certainly not representative of our country. This is a propaganda op to control and do the work of their preferred political party.
While
the Washington
Post (WaPo), Recode, The Verge, and Vox have confirmed
they’re among the 80 “breaking news” publications, no
other publishers names have been revealed.

Assassin Arrested In Staged Kiev Hit Linked To Ukrainian Intelligence
As Official Story Unravels
The
Ukrainian government’s staged assassination of anti-Putin journalist
Arkady Babachenko has taken an even stranger turn, as evidence has
emerged that his would-be “Russia-ordered” assassin
and the man who supposedly hired him, both say they worked for
Ukrainian counterintelligence, casting serious doubt on the official
story.
To
review, Ukrainian authorities announced last Tuesday that Babachenko
had been assassinated after returning home from the store. On
Wednesday, Babachenko appeared at a press conference with Ukrainian
authorities who
said that the faked assassination was an elaborate sting to bust an
actual hit planned by Russia.
Only
now we find that the hitman, Oleksiy
Tsimbalyuk,
is an outspoken critic of Russia who says he worked for Ukrainian
counterintelligence – a
claim Ukraine initially denied but later admitted to be true.
Meanwhile the guy who supposedly hired Tsimbalyuk, Boris L.
German, 50, also says he worked for Ukrainian counter-intelligence, a
claim Ukraine denies as its immediately destroys the carefully
scripted, if rapidly imploding, Ukrainian narrative meant to
scapegoat Russia for what has been a “fake news” story of
epic proportions, emerging from the one nation that not only was
the biggest
foreign donor to the Clinton foundation,
but has made fake news propaganda into an art form.
Supposed “hitman” Oleksiy Tsimbalyuk
Boris German,
suspected of organizing an attempted hit on anti-Putin Russian
journalist Arkady Babachenko sits in a cage during trial in Kiev,
Ukraine
The New
York Times reports
that Tsimbalyuk – a former Russia-hating priest was featured in a
10-minute documentary in January 2017 in which “he
called killing members of the Russian-backed militias in eastern
Ukraine “an act of mercy”, further
calling into question why Russia would hire him for the supposed
assassination in the first place.
Facebook
pictures also reveal Tsimbalyuk wearing a Ukrainian ultranationalist
uniform from “Right Sector,” a group deemed to be
neo-Nazis.
Given
such strong and publicly avowed enmity toward Russia, it
is odd to say the least that Mr. Tsimbalyuk would be selected to
carry out the contract killing of a prominent Kremlin critic.
German
claims he took orders from Moscow businessman Vyacheslav
Pivovarnik – who he says works for one of Putin’s personal
foundations.
Ukrainian
officials also claim that German has a list of another 30 targets
which Moscow wants to wipe out – something he claims he has since
passed onto Kyiv.
Prosecutors
claimed German had been given a down payment of $15,000, half what he
was promised for carrying out the hit.
German
said: ‘I got a call from a longtime acquaintance who lives in Moscow,
and in the process of communicating with him it turned out that he
works for a Putin foundation precisely to orchestrate destabilization
in Ukraine.’ –Daily

“Six
months ago, my old acquaintance contacted me, an ex-citizen of
Ukraine, now living in Moscow,” German
told a Ukrainian court, adding “He
works in a personal foundation of Putin’s –
and is in charge of organizing riots in Ukraine and planned acts of
terror at the next presidential elections. He is called
Vyacheslav Pivovarnik. This is not a fairy tale, there’s nothing
mystical here, everything has been proved.”
German’s
lawyer Eugene Solodko wrote on Facebook that his client was an
executive director of Ukrainian-German firm Schmeisser – the
only non-state owned arms producer in the country.
Russia
has denied German’s claim, with a Putin spokesman saying “No
such foundation exists in Russia. Any allegations about Russia’s
possible complicity in this staging is just mudslinging. They do not
correspond to reality.”
Meanwhile,
senior Ukraine officials have been on the defensive since Wednesday,
when the head of security services announced they had staged the
death of Babchenko so they could track his
would-be
killers to Russian intelligence, a story the International
Federation of Journalists slammed
as idiotic, nonsensical and completely undermining Ukraine’s
credibility.

Democratic National Committee (DNC) heeft een aanklacht ingediend
tegen Wikileaks voor het in ontvangst nemen van gelekte documenten en
het daarna openbaar maken van die documenten……
DNC,
waar godbetert de ‘D’ voor ‘democratie’ staat, terwijl dit
comité niets anders lijkt te doen dan de democratie
ondergraven met al de leugens over de bemoeienis van de
Russen met de VS presidentsverkiezingen, terwijl het zelf de
democratische regels met voeten had getreden in haar optreden naar de
andere presidentskandidaat voor de Democraten, Bernie Sanders…..
Toen
het voorgaande openbaar werd gemaakt* heeft men geen orde op zaken
gesteld, maar eenvoudig de Russen en Trump beschuldigd van
ongeoorloofde inmenging in binnenlandse aangelegenheden middels hacken en manipulatie van de verkiezingen…… (hier is geen flinter bewijs voor, zelfs niet na 2 jaar valse politieke en media campagnes >> over complottheorieën en fake news gesproken…) Waarbij men Trump ook nog eens beschuldigde gemene zaak te maken met
de Russen. (als je het terughoort en alles ziet, heb je zoiets van
hoe is het in godsnaam allemaal mogelijk geweest…??? Te zot voor
woorden!)
Nu
gaan de democraten dus ook nog eens zorgen dat smerige politieke zaken nooit meer te zien en te horen zullen zijn, niet in het nieuws en niet in het openbaar
debat, althans als de rechter het DNC gelijk geeft……. Sterker nog:hiermee wordt zelfs het klokkenluiden tot ‘halsmisdaad’ verheven….. Ofwel: de ‘Democraten’ wensen alle vuiligheid van henzelf geheim te houden voor het grote publiek, ‘zoals het een democratische partij betaamt……’ Hoe men bij de democraten denkt over dergelijke zaken als het de republikeinse partij betreft, weet ik niet, maar het zou me niet verbazen als ze zelfs dat in de toekomst onder de pet willen houden….
Uiteraard komt hiermee de vrijheid van pers in de VS nog verder onder druk te staan, terwijl daar van een onafhankelijke pers nog amper sprake is en waar men godbetert de sociale media die wel de waarheid brengen, beschuldigt van het brengen van ‘fake news’ (of: ‘nepnieuws’). Zoals je uiteraard al lang gelden begrepen had wordt ook Wikileaks tot de sociale media gerekend, alsof die site louter fake news zou brengen….. Moet je nagaan: Wikileaks staat bomvol gelekte documenten van de VS overheid, ofwel bomvol feiten!

Watchdog Condemns DNC Lawsuit Against WikiLeaks as Severe Threat to
Free Press
(CD) — As
President Donald Trump continues to wage war on journalism with
“violent
anti-press rhetoric,”
the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) published a scathing
analysis on Tuesday arguing that the Democratic National
Committee’s recent
lawsuit against
WikiLeaks could set the stage for even more alarming attacks on press
freedom by empowering the U.S. government to penalize media outlets
that publish leaked information.
Citing
the concerns expressed by numerous First Amendment experts and
journalists, CPJ’s Avi Asher-Schapiro contends that
the DNC’s suit—which accuses WikiLeaks of conspiring with Russia
and the Trump campaign to tilt the 2016 election by publishing a
trove of hacked DNC emails—”goes against press freedom precedents
going back to the Pentagon Papers and contains arguments that could
make it more difficult for reporters to do their jobs.”
“What
the language in this suit is calling ‘conspiracy’ is the same
thing journalists do all the time—report on leaked or stolen
documents. Imagine if Trump had the power to go after ‘leakers’
for ‘conspiracy,’” Rolling
Stone‘s
Matt Taibbi wrote in
a series of tweets highlighting CPJ’s “blistering” report on
Tuesday. “This case has potentially enormous consequences for the
press as a whole.”
“This
precedent threatens all journalists,” added Glenn Greenwald,
co-founder of The
Intercept.
The people pretending to be so concerned about press freedoms are actively threatening it, while journalists who express indignation toward Trump’s insulting tweets about Chuck Todd & Wolf Blitzer ignore it because the target is unpopular. George
Freeman, executive director of the Media Law Resource Center, echoed
Taibbi and Greenwald in an interview with CPJ, arguing that the DNC
clearly “paid zero attention to the First Amendment ramifications
of their suit.”
“I’m
unhappy that there’s even an allegation that you could be held
liable for publishing leaked information that you didn’t have
anything to do with obtaining,” Freeman added.
James
Goodale, a First Amendment lawyer who represented the New
York Times in
the 1971
Pentagon Papers case,
said the idea that outlets like WikiLeaks should be punished for
receiving and publishing stolen documents—an idea that forms the
foundation of the DNC suit—is the “greatest threat to press
freedom today.”
As Common
Dreamsat

free speech advocates raised alarm about the DNC’s suit when it was
filed last month, arguing that it is both riddled with legal holes
and full of dangerous implications.
“I
think that this civil suit goes well beyond what the First Amendment
permits,” Barry Pollack, former president of the National
Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, who represents WikiLeaks
founder Julian Assange in criminal cases. “We have seen in DOJs
under both parties, a willingness to at least bump right up against
the line of pursuing journalists criminally. And that’s dangerous.”

jacht maken op Russen die in het door de neonazi-junta van
Porosjenko beheerste gebied wonen……… Twee vliegen in 1 klap: immers daarmee kan men Rusland weer als boeman afschilderen….**
Babchenko heeft zich als ‘journalist’ laten misbruiken voor een smerig spel, waarmee alleen nog eens wordt aangetoond dat Oekraïne maar in één ding is geïnteresseerd: Rusland demoniseren…. De reguliere westerse media zijn mooi in deze val gelopen en hebben voor de zoveelste keer ‘fake news’ (nepnieuws) gebracht……
Bovendien, zo moet de SBU hebben bedacht, op het juiste moment gepland, na de zoveelste rammelende conclusies
van het JIT over MH17, zo blijft de aandacht tenminste op de Russen
gericht, i.p.v. de aandacht te verleggen naar de meest waarschijnlijke daders: Oekraïense
speciale troepen die onder regie stonden van de VS…….
Daarover gesproken: waarom vraagt niemand
zich af, hoe onwaarschijnlijk het is dat Rusland MH17 zou hebben neergehaald,
immers Rusland werd al ten onrechte beschuldigd van het annexeren van
De Krim en hulp aan de separatisten in Oekraïne, zaken die zonder
meer waren gebaseerd op leugens en waar geen flinter bewijs voor was en is…… Welk weldenkend land zou op dat moment een passagiersvliegtuig neerhalen???
Met
het neerhalen van MH17 zou Rusland in feite de eerdere westerse leugens over haar agressie bevestigen en als die agressie niet zo ver ging, zoals ‘de annexatie van De
Krim’***, zou in ieder geval Rusland in een uiterst slecht daglicht komen
te staan…. Waar is in godsnaam de logica??? Dit nog naast het
totaal rammelende bewijs, waarbij zelfs ‘deskundigen’ niet meer
twijfelen aan de Russische schuld…..

41-year-old former Russian soldier-turned-journalist reported to have
been assassinated on Tuesday, faked his own death as part
of an elaborate sting operation by Ukraine to bust an actual hit
planned by Russia, according to the head of the SBU, Ukraine’s
national security service.

According
to Tuesday’s media “reports”, the Journalist, Arkady
Babachenko, was
shot three times in the back in his apartment building in the
Ukrainian capital of Kiev last Tuesday after going out to buy bread –
his wife finding him in a pool of blood after she came out of the
bathroom following the “murder.” He was pronounced dead in an
ambulance on the way to the hospital.
A
photo of Babachenko taken by his wife, which was staged, was posted
online.
Then,
in a remarkable “recovery”, on Wednesday, Babachenko showed up to
a press conference, reporting that the SBU had intelligence
about the actual assassination scheme and that he helped them to
derail the plot. The assassin who received the real order to kill
Babachenko along with the person who organized the hit, have
reportedly been detained.

Babachenko
fled to Ukraine in February 2017 after he says he received threats
and could be arrested following his work as a presenter for Ukraine’s
ATR TV. He has been one of Russia’s most recognizable war
correspondents, and has spoken out about Russia’s actions in Syria
and Ukraine in recent years.
Following
his “death,” Ukrainian officials confirmed Babachenko had been
shot and said it was believed he had been targeted due to his work as
an anti-Putin journalist.
Ukrainian
lawmaker Anton Gerashchneko told
the BBC that
the killer waited for Babachenkon near his Kiev apartment and then
shot him from behind.
“When
Arkady opened the door of his flat, the killer cowardly shot him in
the back,
firing several shots,” wrote Gerashchneko on Facebook – however
it is unclear if he knew about the ruse. He added that investigators
were looking into “Russian spy agencies” as “Putin’s regime
takes aim at people whom it’s impossible to break or intimidate.”
A
neighbor told local
media that
the assassin had probably used a silencer, since they didn’t hear
any shots.
The
reaction to Babachenko’s assassination was to condemn Russia. The
Guardian described
it “as the most recent murder of a high-profile dissident in
Kiev, a city that has become a refuge for some of Moscow’s most
vehement critics, as well as the scene of targeted assassinations
that have remained unsolved for years.”
As
a result of the brilliant special operation carried out by Ukrainian
law enforcers, the
killer who received the order for the murder of Arkady and the
organizer of the murder were detained.
Gerashchenko
went on to describe the sting operation – which he likened to
Sherlock Holmes faking his own death (Google translated):

was born in Moscow in 1977. While studying law, he was conscripted
into the Russian army and served during the Chechen wars from 1994 to

He also wrote a memoir in 2006, “One Soldier’s War,” in which
he chronicled his experiences. He has a degree in international law
from the Modern Humanitarian University.

New
US Congress Bill Conflates Criticism of Israel With Anti-Semitism

US Congress bill proposed on Wednesday conflates criticism of Israel
with anti-Semitism, free-speech advocates say.
The
measure aims to provide the Department of Education with a legal
definition of anti-Semitism to handle discrimination claims.
It
adopts a 2010 report by a special US State Department envoy to combat
anti-Semitism.
The
document provides a list of examples where anti-Semitism “manifests
itself with regard to the state of Israel”. They include applying
double-standards for Israel, attempting to delegitimise it and
comparing Israeli policies to Nazi Germany.
“It’s
ridiculous; it’s unconstitutional; it’s against free speech,”
Ahmad Abuznaid, director of the National Network of Arab American
Communities (NAAC), told Middle East Eye.
The
bill, dubbed the Anti-Semitism Awareness Act of 2018, was introduced
by lawmakers from both US major parties.
US
college campuses, where activists attempt to pass student council
resolutions to boycott Israel for its mistreatment of Palestinians,
have become a major arena for debate over the conflict.
Activists
say the bill would censor the exchange of ideas and censor Israel’s
critics.
The
Arab American Institute, a Washington-based think tank, said the bill
focuses on suppressing speech critical of Israel, but it fails to
address the real problem of anti-Semitism.
“At
a time when hate crimes against targeted and vulnerable communities
have increased, including against the American Jewish community, it
is imperative that our elected officials do not conflate criticisms
of policies and political opposition with instances of hate,” the
group said in a statement.
Abuznaid
compared the bill with measures to outlaw the Boycott, Divestment and
Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel, “but this is a more
vicious attack on the freedom of speech in the US.”
Last
year, lawmakers proposed a bill that would legally restrict US
citizens and companies from boycotting Israel. The measure failed to
progress after an outcry from free speech watchdogs, including the
American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
“This
bill is unconstitutional because it seeks to impose the government’s
political views on Americans who choose to express themselves through
boycotts,” Ben Wizner, director of the ACLU Speech, Privacy, and
Technology Project, said in a statement in March after the
anti-boycott bill was amended.
In
January, a federal judge blocked a Kansas law that required state
contractors to certify that they do not boycott Israel.

The
ACLU also rejected Wednesday’s anti-Semitism bill, saying that it
“risks chilling the free speech of students on college campuses,
and is unnecessary to enforce federal law’s prohibition on
harassment in education.”
“We
worry that the law will lead colleges to suppress speech, especially
if the Department of Education launches investigations simply because
students have engaged in speech critical of Israel,” ACLU executive
director Anthony Romero said in a statement.
“College
campuses should be havens for free expression, and students must be
free to express their opinions and viewpoints, so long as they avoid
harassment. We urge Congress to reject this dangerous and unnecessary
bill.”
Abuznaid
said Wednesday’s bill targets students who are developing a sense
of activism.
He
added that the bill would play to the advantage of Kenneth Marcus,
President Donald Trump’s nominee to head the civil rights office of
the Department of Education. Marcus has led civil rights lawsuits
against academic institutions that adopted BDS measures.
“It’s
just another avenue to stifle the debate on Israel and Palestine,”
Abuznaid said of the bill.
Proponents
of the bill say its objective is to protect Jewish students from
discrimination.
“Jewish
students, like students of any religion, should not live in fear of
attacks because of their religion,” Congressman Ted Deutch, a
Democrat from Florida who co-sponsored the measure, said in a
statement.
“They
shouldn’t have to fear wearing Judaic symbols or expressing their
support for Israel.”
Nadat

Israel
says it plans to build 2,500 new settler homes in the West Bank in
violation of a 2016 UNSC resolution. It comes just days after the IDF
killed dozens of Palestinians protesting the Israeli occupation.
Israel’s
Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said on Thursday that he was
finalizing plans for the construction of new homes in Jewish
settlements in the occupied West Bank.
Writing
on Twitter, Lieberman said he would seek approval for the project
next week, expressing hope that the regional planning board – the
High Planning Council in Judea and Samaria – would designate 1,400
of the housing units for immediate construction.
“We
will promote building in all of Judea and Samaria, from the north to
south, in small communities and in large ones,”Liberman
wrote, using the Biblical names for the West Bank. Some 500,000
Israelis already live in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.

The
pending construction project is in direct violation of UN Security
Council Resolution 2334. Adopted in December 2016, the resolution
states that Israel’s settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem
constitute a “flagrant
violation”of
international law and have “no
legal validity.”
Earlier
this week, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry called on the
International Criminal Court to open a probe into Israel’s illegal
settlements, calling Tel Aviv’s actions “crimes against
humanity.”
The
settlements are “the
single most dangerous threat to Palestinian lives, livelihoods, and
national rights,” the
ministry said in a statement released on Facebook. Israel dismissed
the Palestinian statement as “cynical” and
claimed the request to the ICC had no legal validity.
The
project marks the latest Israeli action to come under international
scrutiny. This month, Israel welcomed the relocation of the American,
Paraguayan and Guatemalan embassies from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem – a
move that has been widely condemned by the international community.
In
December, the United Nations General Assembly voted by 128 to 9
to declare the United States’ controversial decision to recognize
Jerusalem as Israel’s capital “null
and void.”
Lieberman’s
announcement also comes just a week after month-long Palestinian
protests,
known
as the Great March of Return, near the Gaza border. During the
opening ceremony of the US embassy in Jerusalem, violence peaked to a
level unseen in previous weeks.
Some 60 Palestinian protesters were
killed and more than 2,000 were injured by Israeli forces.

Egyptische mensenrechtenactivist Wael Abbas om 4 uur ‘s ochtends is
gearresteerd en geblinddoekt werd afgevoerd naar een onbekende
bestemming……….
Abbas
is al vaker opgepakt voor het geven van zijn mening over de corruptie
en de zware mensenrechtenschendingen door het leger, volgens hem de
enige machthebber in Egypte.
Abbas
wordt beschuldigd van het brengen van ‘fake news’ (nepnieuws) en het lid zijn van
een verboden organisatie, de standaard redenen die door de Egyptische
junta wordt gegeven na dergelijke arrestaties…… Wel maakt dit
duidelijk waartoe de hysterie rond ‘fake news’ kan leiden…… Overigens de term ‘fake news’ is welbewuste geïntroduceerd door
de machthebbers en de reguliere (vooral westerse) media, de grote verspreiders van
‘echt’ fake news…..
Dit
alles in de strijd tegen de sociale media, waar men tot bijna op het
uur nauwkeurig kan bijhouden wat er echt gebeurd in ons land en de
wereld in het geheel, i.p.v. te worden voorgelogen door politici,
‘opiniemakers’, ‘deskundigen’ en de reguliere media, die braaf
herhalen wat ons moet worden voorgekauwd, zodat de huidige inhumane neoliberale
status quo gehandhaafd kan worden………
Niet voor niets ook dat westerse landen nog amper kritiek hebben op de enorme mensenrechtenschendingen in Egypte, men is in feite jaloers op Egypte en zou maar wat graag ook in eigen land de critici het zwijgen op willen leggen…… Tja voor je het weet schrikt het grootste deel van het volk wakker en keert zich tegen haar landelijke regering, de regionale en lokale autoriteiten….. (het zou goddomme een keer tijd worden!) Prominent
Egyptian activist and blogger, Wael Abbas, was been arrested by
Egyptian authorities in the early hours of the morning.
Abbas
was taken during a 4am raid on his Cairo home and his computer and
mobile phone were seized. Following the raid, Abbas was blindfolded,
transported to an unknown location and prevented from contacting his
lawyer, according to the Arab Network for Human Rights (ANHRI).
Abbas
announced his arrest on his Facebook page
by writing “I am being detained.” His current whereabouts remains
unknown, prompting friends and followers to launch the Arabic hashtag
“where_is_Wael_Abbas”
on Twitter. Egyptian security officials have confirmed his arrest,
adding that Abbas was detained on accusations of disseminating false
news and joining an outlawed group.
Abbas
has long been vocal about the political situation in Egypt both
before and after the uprising of 2011, regularly campaigning against
torture and publishing graphic videos showing torture and police
abuse on his blog, misrdigital.com. In 2006, he was named among
the BBC’s “Most Influential Persons” and he
has previously received awards for his work from Human Rights Watch
and CNN. In 2007, his YouTube account was shut down,
resulting in the removal of hundreds of videos showing protests and
abuses by security forces. He has also been detained on a number of
previous occasions.
Former
managing editor of Daily News Egypt, Rana Allam, told Al
Jazeera: “Wael
writes all the time, and when he doesn’t write, he uses social
media to speak out and provides people with information about what is
happening around them. He doesn’t budge and has been doing what
many of us can no longer do. This is all very scary for the
government.”
Abbas’
arrest has been seen as the latest in a string of enforced
disappearances conducted by the Egyptian authorities. Journalists
have come under particularly stringent crackdowns, as just last month
Egyptian freelancer Ismail Alexandrani was sentenced to ten years in
prison by a military court in Cairo for being a member of a banned
organisation and spreading false news.
Deputy
Executive Director of the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ),
Robert Mahoney, said that “hauling a journalist before a military
court not only violates [Alexandrani’s] rights as a civilian but
sends a chilling message to the media that independent coverage of
political dissent and security threats will not be tolerated by
Egypt’s rulers.”
Enforced
disappearances have been widely used as a tool of repression under
the rule of Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, the current Egyptian president who
came to power my means of a military coup in 2013.
The
Egyptian Commissions for Rights and Freedoms (ECRF) documented 378
cases of
enforced disappearances between August 2016 and August 2017 alone,
though numbers are believed to be higher since many families fear
that reporting disappearances could inadvertently put loved ones in
jeopardy, according to Al-Monitor.

Partners with Saudi-Funded Think Tank to Censor Posts That Threaten
“Democracy”

a new project Facebook insists is a completely objective and
nonpartisan effort to root out what it deems “disinformation,”
the social media giant announcedon
Thursday that it is partnering with the Atlantic Council — a
prominent Washington-based think-tank funded by Saudi Arabia, major
oil companies, defense contractors, and Charles Koch — to prevent
its platform from “being abused during elections.”
“This
is alarming,” independent journalist Rania Khalek concluded in
a tweet on Thursday. “The Atlantic Council — which is funded by
gulf monarchies, western governments, NATO, oil and weapons
companies, etc. — will now assist Facebook in suppressing what they
decide is disinformation.”
According
to its statement announcing
the initiative, Facebook will “use the Atlantic Council’s Digital
Research Unit Monitoring Missions during elections and other highly
sensitive moments.”
The
statement continued:
“This
will allow us to focus on a particular geographic area — monitoring
for misinformation and foreign interference and also working to help
educate citizens as well as civil society…
“This
effort is part of an broader initiative to help provide credible and
independent research about the role of social media in elections, as
well as democracy more generally. We look forward to working together
to protect free and fair elections across the world.”
While
Facebook’s statement fawned over the Atlantic Council’s “stellar
reputation,” critics argued that the organization’s reliance on
donations from foreign oil monarchies and American plutocrats puts
the lie to the project’s stated mission of shielding the democratic
process from manipulation and abuse.
“Monopoly
social media corporations teaming up with [the] pro-U.S. NatSec blob
to determine truth was always the logical end of ‘fake news’
panic,” Adam Johnson, a contributor at Fairness and Accuracy in
Reporting (FAIR), argued on Twitter in response to Facebook’s
announcement.

According
to a New
York Timesreport from
2014, the Atlantic Council has received donations from at least 25
foreign nations since 2008, including the United Kingdom, Qatar, the
United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia.
And
while the think-tank insists that it is “non-partisan” despite
its overwhelmingly right-wing, corporate, anti-democratic funding
sources, Splinter‘s
Paul Blest noted on
Thursday that “last week the Atlantic Council gave [former]
President George W. Bush a ‘Distinguished International Leadership’
award at an event where Bush was reportedly received with a ‘standing
ovation.’”
Facebook’s
new partnership with the Atlantic Council comes amid growing concerns
that the social media platform’s attempt
to establish itself as an arbiter of
what news sources are “trustworthy” poses a serious threat to
non-corporate left-wing outlets that don’t hew to party lines or
align themselves with dominant media narratives.

year, Julianne Tveten noted that,
thus far, Facebook’s attempts to combat “fake news” through
algorithm changes and other adjustments “haven’t stifled
propaganda.”
“On
the contrary, they may have stifled dissent,” Tveten concluded.
