Ongelofelijk!!

Noam
Chomsky: “Israeli Intervention in US Elections Overwhelms Anything
Russia Has Done”

August
3, 2018 at 9:29 pm

Written
by
Tyler
Durden

(ZHE) — Well,
this is going to make the weekend’s political conversations a
little more awkward around America.

As
the mainstream media (and even the leftist politicians) begin to back
quietly away from the “collusion” narrative, they remain
increasingly focused on Russia’s “evil” efforts at “meddling”
in the US election and “interfering with our democracy,” or some
such hysterical phrase.

And
that is what makes the comments by mainstay of world-renowned
political dissident and liberal-thinking hero Noam Chomsky’s
comments in the following interview with Democracy Now so ‘awkward’
for the Trump-hating members of society.

so,
take, say, the huge issue of interference in our pristine
elections.
Did
the Russians interfere in our elections?
 An
issue of overwhelming concern in the media. I mean, in most of the
world, that’s
almost
a joke
.

First
of all, if you’re interested in foreign interference in our
elections,
whatever
the Russians may have done barely counts or weighs in the balance as
compared with what another state does, openly, brazenly and with
enormous support.

Israeli
intervention in U.S. elections vastly overwhelms anything the
Russians may have done…

I
mean, even to the point where
the
prime minister of Israel, Netanyahu, goes directly to Congress,
without even informing the president, and speaks to Congress, with
overwhelming applause, to try to undermine the president’s policies
– what happened with Obama and Netanyahu in 2015
….

Did
Putin come to give an address to the joint sessions of Congress
trying to – calling on them to reverse U.S. policy, without even
informing the president?
 And
that’s just a tiny bit of this overwhelming influence.

So
if you happen to be interested in influence of – foreign influence
on elections, there are places to look. But even that is a joke.

I
mean,
one
of the most elementary principles of a functioning democracy is that
elected representatives should be responsive to those who elected
them. There’s nothing more elementary than that. But we know very
well that that is simply not the case in the United States.

There’s
ample literature in mainstream academic political science simply
comparing voters’ attitudes with the policies pursued by their
representatives, and it shows that for a large majority of the
population, they’re basically disenfranchised. Their own
representatives pay no attention to their voices.
They
listen to the voices of the famous 1 percent – the rich and the
powerful, the corporate sector.

The
elections—Tom Ferguson’s stellar work has demonstrated, very
conclusively, that for a long period, way back, U.S. elections have
been pretty much bought. You can predict the outcome of a
presidential or congressional election with remarkable precision by
simply looking at campaign spending. That’s only one part of it.

Lobbyists
practically write legislation in congressional offices.
 In
massive ways, the concentrated private capital, corporate sector,
super wealth, intervene in our elections, massively, overwhelmingly,
to the extent that the most elementary principles of democracy are
undermined.
 Now,
of course, all that is technically legal, but that tells you
something about the way the society functions.

So, if
you’re concerned with our elections and how they operate and how
they relate to what would happen in a democratic society, taking a
look at Russian hacking is absolutely the wrong place to look.
Well,
you see occasionally some attention to these matters in the media,
but very minor as compared with the
extremely
marginal question of Russian hacking.

And
I think we find this on issue after issue, also on issues on which
what Trump says, for whatever reason, is not unreasonable. So,
he’s
perfectly right when he says we should have better relations with
Russia.

Being
dragged through the mud for that is outlandish, makes – Russia
shouldn’t refuse to deal with the United States because
the
U.S. carried out the worst crime of the century in the invasion of
Iraq, much worse than anything Russia has done
.

But
they shouldn’t refuse to deal with us for that reason, and we
shouldn’t refuse to deal with them for whatever infractions they
may have carried out, which certainly exist. This is just absurd. We
have to move towards better –
right
at the Russian border, there are very extreme tensions, that could
blow up anytime and lead to what would in fact be a terminal nuclear
war, terminal for the species and life on Earth.
 We’re
very close to that.

Now,
we could ask why. First of all, we should do things to ameliorate it.
Secondly, we should ask why. Well, it’s because NATO expanded
after the collapse of the Soviet Union, in
violation
of verbal promises to Mikhail Gorbachev, mostly under Clinton,
partly
under first Bush, then Clinton expanded right to the Russian border,
expanded further under Obama.

The
U.S. has offered to bring Ukraine into NATO. That’s the kind
of a heartland of Russian geostrategic concerns.

So,
yes,
there’s
tensions at the Russian border – and not, notice, at the Mexican
border.
 Well,
those are all issues that should be of primary concern.

The
fate of –
the
fate of organized human society, even of the survival of the species,
depends on this.
How
much attention is given to these things as compared with, you know,
whether Trump lied about something? I think those seem to me the
fundamental criticisms of the media.

So
to sum up
 – Trump’s
right about better relations with Russia – the fate of the world
depends on it, Russia did nothing of note, Russian hacking is
extremely marginal, Israel is the real meddler, US democracy no
longer exists, the billionaire corporatocracy runs America.

Is
Noam Chomsky a “puppet of Putin”? Did the veteran political
dissident just become a “useful

idiot”?
Well he must be an anti-semite, right? We look forward to Adam
Schiff’s response to this crushing blow to the left’s
‘russia-russia-russia’ narrative.

Fair

ACTION ALERT: It’s Been Over a Year Since MSNBC Has Mentioned US War in Yemen

July
24, 2018 at 11:42 am

Written
by
Adam
Johnson

Why
is the No. 1 outlet of alleged anti-Trump #resistance completely
ignoring his most devastating war?

(FAIR) As
FAIR has noted before (
1/8/18, 3/20/18),
to
MSNBC, the
carnage and destruction the US and its Gulf Monarchy allies are
leveling against the poorest country in the Arab world is simply a
non-issue.

On
July 2, a year had passed since the cable network’s last segment
mentioning US participation in the war on Yemen, which has killed in
excess of 15,000 people and resulted in over a
million
cases of cholera
.
The US is backing a
Saudi-led
bombing campaign
 with
intelligence, refueling, political cover, military hardware and, as
of March,
ground
troops
.
None of this matters at all to what
Adweek (4/3/18)
calls “the network of the Resistance,” which has since its last
mention of the US’s role in the destruction of Yemen found time
to
run
over a dozen segments
 highlighting
war crimes committed by the Syrian and Russian governments in Syria.

By
way of contrast, as
MSNBC was
marking a year without mentioning the US role in Yemen, the
PBS
NewsHour
 was
running a
three-part
series
 on
the war, with the second part (
7/3/18)
headlined, “American-Made Bombs in Yemen Are Killing Civilians,
Destroying Infrastructure and Fueling Anger at the US.”
The
NewsHour’s
Jane Ferguson reported:

msnbc pbs

PBS
NewsHour (7/3/18) examining the remains of US-made cluster bombs in
Yemen.

The
aerial bombing campaign has not managed to dislodge the rebels, but
has hit weddings, hospitals and homes. The US military supports the
Saudi coalition with logistics and intelligence. The United States it
also sells the Saudis and coalition partners many of the bombs they
drop on Yemen.”

MSNBC chat
show/Starbucks commercial
Morning
Joe
 did
run one segment (
4/25/18)
that vaguely mentioned the war on Yemen, but failed to note the US’s
role in it at all, much less that Washington is arming and backing
the conflict’s primary aggressor. Instead, they did the perverse
inversion––previously mastered by
Washington
Post
’s
Jackson Diehl (
FAIR.org6/27/17)—of
not only ignoring the US’s major role in killing thousands, but
painting the US as a noble haven for refugees. The schlocky segment,
an interview with writer Mohammed Al Samawi, was a shallow mixture of
“interfaith” pablum, poverty porn and self-congratulations to the
US for taking in refugees (without, of course, acknowledging that
they’re seeking refuge from a crisis the US has created).

For
a bit more context, in the time period of July 3, 2017, to July 3,
2018,
MSNBC dedicated
zero segments to the US’s war in Yemen, but
455
segments to Stormy Daniels
.
This isn’t to suggest the Stormy Daniels matter isn’t
newsworthy—presidential corruption is per se important. But one has
to wonder if this particular thread of venality is 455 stories more
important than Trump aggressively supporting a war that’s killing
hundreds of people a month, injuring thousands, and subjecting
millions to famine and cholera. Did
MSNBC editors,
poring over the latest academic foreign policy literature, really
come to the conclusion Trump’s war in Yemen isn’t important? Or
is
MSNBC simply
fueled by partisan Russia dot-connecting and stories that allow them
to say “porn star” as much as possible?

              MSNBC

What seems most likely is MSNBC has found that attacking Russia form the right on matters of foreign policy is the most elegant way to preserve its “progressive” image while still serving traditional centers of power—namely, the Democratic Party establishment, corporate sponsors, and their own revolving door of ex-spook and military contractor-funded talking heads (3/26/18). After all, Obama backed the war on Yemen—though not nearly as aggressively as Trump has—and it’s difficult to make a coherent left-wing, anti-war criticism when the current Republican in office is simply carrying out your guy’s policy, but on steroids.

In
any event, it’s not like any Yemenis are going to pull ads, turn
down appearances, or phone Comcast higher-ups
complaining. So, who cares? To be poor and brown—to say nothing of
not serving the immediate partisan interests of the Democratic
party—is evidently to not matter much in the eyes
of MSNBC producers and on-air talent.

Liberal Rallies Yet for the Children of Yemen

Hundreds
of thousands of people
 showed
up across the United States at more than 600 gatherings three
weeks ago. They came out to protest
Donald
Trump
‘s “zero
tolerance

immigration policy in highly choreographed, Democratic
Party-affiliated “Families Belong Together” rallies and
marches.
Liberal
celebrities
 marched
and spoke. Local, state, and federal Democratic Party politicians and
office-holders gave passionate speeches denouncing Trump’s
separation of Central American migrant children from their parents at
the southern U.S. border.

Marchers
carried signs expressing their concern for children and families.
Here are some of the
messages
written
 on
the posters displayed at these gatherings:

(The
issue that sparked this remarkable outpouring has already been pushed
off the front pages and the cable news headlines by the resurgent
RussiaGate story, brought to new intensity by Trump’s “

Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland. It is a victim of the
all-powerful “now we see you, now we don’t” U.S. news cycle –

.)

Emaciated
Babies”: 50,000 Yemeni Children May Have Died in 2017

We
have yet to learn of any large and widespread U.S. demonstrations on
behalf of the children and families of Yemen, where the U.S. is
deeply complicit in the creation of a situation that “looks,” in
the words of the United Nations’ humanitarian chief, “like the
Apocalypse.”
UNICEF
reported
 last
year that a child dies from preventable causes on the average of once
every 10 minutes in Yemen.

As
the Associated Press (AP)
reported
last May
,
roughly 3 million Yemeni women and children are “acutely
malnourished; another 400,000 children are fighting for their lives.”
Further:

Nearly
a third of Yemen’s population — 8.4 million of its 29 million
people — rely completely on food aid or else they would starve.
That number grew by a quarter over the past year…Aid agencies warn
that parts of Yemen could soon start to see widespread death from
famine. More and more people are reliant on aid that is already
failing to reach people. …It is unknown how many have died, since
authorities are not able to track cases. Save the Children late last
year estimated that 50,000 children may have died in 2017 of extreme
hunger or disease (emphasis added), given that up to 30 percent of
children with untreated cases of severe acute malnutrition die.”

The
AP told the heartbreaking story of Umm Mizrah and her children,
tragic drops in the bucket of what could become one of the biggest
humanitarian catastrophes of the last half-century:

The
young mother stepped onto the scale for the doctor. Even with all her
black robes on, she weighed only 84 pounds …The doctor’s office
is covered with dozens of pictures of emaciated babies who have come
through Al-Sadaqa Hospital in Aden …Mothers like Umm Mizrah…skip
meals, sleep to escape the gnawing in their stomachs. They hide bony
faces and emaciated bodies in voluminous black abaya robes and
veils…The doctor asked the mother to get back on the scale holding
her son, Mizrah. At 17 months, he was 5.8 kilograms (12.8 pounds) —
around half the normal weight for his age. He showed all the signs of
‘severe acute malnutrition,’ the most dire stage of hunger. His
legs and feet were swollen, he wasn’t getting enough protein. When
the doctor pressed a finger into the skin of his feet, the
indentation lingered.”

Things
have gotten worse in the last two and half months.
According
to Lisa Grande
,
head of the UN humanitarian effort in Yemen, “8.5 million people
that we describe as being pre-famine… when they wake up in the
morning, they have no idea if they will eat that day…by the end of
this year, another 10 million Yemenis will be in that situation.”

Two
and a half weeks ago, special PBS correspondent
Jane
Ferguson related
 the
plight of Maimona Shaghadar, who “suffers the agony of starvation
in silence. No longer able to walk or talk, at 11 years old, little
Maimona’s emaciated body weighs just 24 pounds…Every day,” a
nurse told Ferguson in a remote Yemen hospital, medical personnel
“see these sorts of cases.”

Cholera,
a prominent 19th-century disease, has become epidemic there, thanks
to the collapse of water sanitation. Cholera has already killed
thousands of Yemeni civilians, children especially, and a million
Yemenis are currently infected. Yemen is now home to
what
Ferguson calls
 “the
worst cholera outbreak in modern history. Now every time the rains
comes, people fall ill.”

American
Made”

The
cause? In “mainstream” U.S. media, the Yemeni children and
families suffering this near “apocalypse” are victims of a
three-year-old war between Yemen’s Iran-backed Shiite Houthi rebels
who hold the country’s north, and a Saudi Arabian-led coalition,
armed and backed by the United States. But there is little evidence
of significant Iranian involvement in Yemen. The desperately poor
nation’s “civil war” is a remarkably one-sided affair in which
the world’s only Superpower (the United States) has been providing
critical support for what amounts to the crucifixion of millions of
innocent children and families. Combined with a vicious economic
blockade, the US-Saudi coalition’s relentless bombing campaign has
collapsed Yemen’s economy, leaving two-thirds of the population to
depend outside on food aid for survival. The air onslaughts have
devastated much of Yemen’s basic infrastructure so that more than
half the population lacks access to safe drinking water – the key
cause of the cholera epidemic. In a recent trip deep into Yemen’s
countryside, Ferguson found a Doctors Without Borders cholera
treatment center that had been crushed into rubble by a U.S.-Saudi
airstrike the day before – an obvious war crime. “It was just
about to open its doors to patients,” Ferguson reports.

Ferguson
spoke to Dr. Ali Al Motaa, a Yemeni college professor who did his
doctorate in the US. “The missiles that kill us,” Motaa said,
“American-made. The planes that kill us, American-made. The tanks,
Abrams, American-made. You are saying to me, where is America?
America is the whole thing.”

By
Ferguson’s account, from deep inside rebel-controlled territory:

The
aerial bombing campaign has not managed to dislodge the rebels, but
has hit weddings, hospitals and homes. The U.S. military supports the
Saudi coalition with logistics and intelligence. The United States it
also sells the Saudis and coalition partners many of the bombs they
drop on Yemen. In the mountains outside the capital, we gained
exclusive access to the site where the Houthis store unexploded
American-made bombs, like this 2000-pound Mark 84 bomb made in
Garland, Texas. It landed in the middle of the street in the capital,
we are told.”

That
was before he U.S.-Saudi forces, with the Trump administration’s
approval, decided to launch an
offensive
against the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah
,
through which almost all the food and medicine coming into
Houthi-held Yemen passes. As
Al
Jazeera reported
 three
days ago, the UN is warning that “the humanitarian crisis in Yemen
is worsening as tens of thousands of families are displaced by the
Saudi-UAE coalition offensive to retake the strategic port city….the
relentless air raids and lack of aid are making an already dire
humanitarian crisis even worse for the civilians who live in the
region….tens of thousands of families have been displaced from
Hodeidah as a result of the fierce fighting.

The
U.S. is involved in direct as well as indirect assault on Yemen.
Yemen was home to the
first
known U.S. drone attack
 outside
Afghanistan in 2002. Hundreds of U.S. drone and other airstrikes have
targeted Yemen
since
2009
.

Trump
drew his first military blood in Yemen. U.S. Navy special forces
carried out a raid—planned by the Obama administration and handed
off to the incoming Trump team—that killed 25 civilians, including
10 children in the mountainous Yakla region of Yemen’s Al Bayda
province. One of the children killed was an
8-year-old
girl
,
Nawar al-Awlaki, daughter of the Islamist preacher Anwar al-Awlaki,
who was killed on Barack Obama’s orders in a September 2011 U.S.
drone strike in Yemen. Nawar’s older brother, 16-year-old
Abdulrahman, was killed in a second Obama-commanded drone strike soon
afterward.

Trump’s
continuation of the U.S. slaughter of al-Awlaki’s children was
consistent with his campaign claim that he would kill the relatives
of terrorist suspects—a war crime. “The other thing with the
terrorists is you have to take out their families; when you get these
terrorists, you have to take out their families,” Trump
pronounced
on Fox News
 in
December 2015.

A
PBS NewsHour report earlier this month describes the Yemen tragedy as
a “man-made” catastrophe. A more historically specific
characterization would be “Empire-made” or “Washington-made.”
As Bill Van Auken
accurately
reported
 on
the World Socialist Web Site five weeks ago:

This
total war against an entire population…would be impossible without
the uninterrupted support—military and political—of US
imperialism since its outset…The US, together with its main NATO
allies the UK and France, has supplied the planes, warships, bombs,
missiles and shells used to devastate Yemen and slaughter its people.
In his eight years in office, President Barack Obama presided over
some $115 billion in arms sales to the monarchical dictatorship in
Riyadh. The Trump administration, which has sought to forge an
anti-Iran axis with Saudi Arabia, the other reactionary Gulf oil
sheikhdoms and Israel, has touted arms deals with Riyadh that
potentially would amount to $110 billion.”

The
Pentagon has given direct and indispensable aid to the Saudi-led
onslaught, providing midair refueling for the planes that bomb Yemeni
civilians, staffing a joint command center in Riyadh with US
intelligence and logistics officers and reinforcing the Saudi-UAE
blockade of the country with American warships. Recently, US Green
Berets have been deployed with Saudi ground forces to assist in their
anti-Yemen operations. Under the banner of the ‘war on terror,’
the Pentagon is waging its own air war in Yemen, conducting at least
130 air and drone strikes in 2017, quadruple the number in 2016…The
Trump administration gave the go-ahead for the current siege of
Hodeidah Pentagon officials have reported that US officers are
helping to select targets in the port city.”

Historical
Continuities

The
Trump administration’s funding and equipping of the savage war on
Yemen shares three key characteristics with the “zero tolerance”
immigration policy that Trump was recently forced to (partially and
haltingly) rescind. First, it unconscionably uses innocent children
and families as hostages and pawns in the advance of White House
policy goals.

Second,
it is richly consistent with U.S. policy stretching far back in
history (
see
this
 on
the long U.S. record of family separation
and
this
on
the long U.S. history of directly and indirectly attacking and
killing children and other civilians in foreign nations).

Third,
it is consistent with Barack Obama’s record. The Obama
administration
backed the
Saudi-led Arab assault on Yemen. It also (as few marching against
Trump’s border policy seem to know or care) responded to Central
American migration and asylum-seeking with a policy of aggressive
deterrence and detention –
a
policy that included the caging of children
.

Why
No Mass Marches for Yemeni Children?

Clearly
the murder of tens of thousands of (Yemeni) children is a bigger
crime than the undoubted transgression of traumatically if (hopefully
temporarily) separating 2300 Central American children form their
migrant parents. Why don’t hundreds of thousands of U.S.-Americans
march on behalf of Yemeni children and families killed, maimed,
starved, sickened, and otherwise placed at grave risk by Washington
and its Arab allies?

Differences
of geographical proximity and familiarity are part of the
explanation. Equally if not more significant: the dominant U.S
media’s systematic under-reporting of U.S, imperial aggression in
the Middle East; that media’s portrayal of is the Yemen war as a
regional Sunni-Shia and Saudi-Iranian conflict in which the U.S. is
only peripherally involved; the Yemeni victims’ status as Muslim
Others who are linked in the dominant U.S. media and politics culture
with the officially U.S,- and Israel-demonized state of Iran (a
nation that all too unmentionably looks like a model of democracy,
social justice, and women’s rights in comparison to its regional
arch-enemy and Washington’s “good friend” the absolutist and
arch-reactionary state of Saudi Arabia). For these and other reasons,
the Democratic Party establishment sees no political advantage in
confronting Trump on U.S. Yemen policy, a policy in which both
reigning U.S. political parties are deeply complicit.

begon tegen o.a.

E.e.a.

Post-West
world order’ being shaped as we speak – Lavrov to Channel 4

A
new multipolar order, driven by economics and history, is emerging in
the world and Western attempts to stop or to slow it down are
unlikely to succeed, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told UK’s
Channel 4.

I
think that we are in the post-West world order,”
 Lavrov
told the British Channel 4 in an
interview on
Friday.
“It
is a historical epoch, if you want. Certainly, after five or so
centuries of domination of the collective West, as it were, it is not
very easy to adjust to new realities that there are other powerhouses
economically, financially and politically,”
 he
added, pointing to China, India and Brazil.

Asked
if Russia was shaping this world order, Lavrov replied it was rather
the product of history and
“development
itself.”

You
cannot really hope to contain [these] new powerful, economically and
financially, countries. You cannot really ignore their role in world
trade and world economy,”
 despite
attempts to slow down the process with sanctions and tariffs, the top
Russian diplomat said.

The
European Union is
“certainly
a very important pillar of any world order,”
 Lavrov
added, but it needs to decide whether to remain reliant on the US or
become more self-sufficient. By way of illustration, Lavrov brought
up the migrant crisis, which the EU is currently struggling with.

NATO
bombed Libya, turned Libya into a black hole through which waves of
migrants, illegal migrants, rushed to Europe. Now EU is cleaning the
broken china for NATO,”
 Lavrov
said.

Russia’s
relations with the West, which have soured dramatically since the
2014 US-backed coup in Ukraine, will be among the topics discussed at
the July summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US
President Donald Trump in Finland.

During
the interview, Lavrov brushed off Channel 4 speculation that Russia
could offer to hand over NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, whom it
granted political asylum, in exchange for the lifting of US and EU
sanctions.

Immigrant
Toddlers Ordered to Appear in Federal Court Alone

(MPN
Immigrant children as young as three years old are being forced to
hold their own in deportation proceedings in federal court, judges
have reported, further confirming how the
 cruelties
of the U.S. immigrant enforcement regime
 have
been largely unhindered by the local and global controversy it’s
provoked.

The
practice began under former President Barack Obama, but has
widened under President Trump to encompass an ever-larger group of
youth — who are often toddlers, unable to understand the dire
circumstances that they’re in.

Speaking
to Texas Tribune, Immigrant Defenders Law Center in Los
Angeles executive director Lindsay Toczylowski said:

We
were representing a 3-year-old in court recently who had been
separated from the parents. And the child — in the middle of the
hearing — started climbing up on the table … It really
highlighted the absurdity of what we’re doing with these kids.”

Continuing,
she noted that the children are scarcely able to put into words the
conditions – frequently violent – that force the families to
leave their homes and make the treacherous journey to the north:

The
parent might be the only one who knows why they fled from the home
country, and the child is in a disadvantageous position to defend
themselves.

The
kids don’t understand the intricacies that are involved with
deportation and immigration court … They do understand that they
have been separated from their parents, and the primary goal is to
get back with people they love.”

Over
2,000 children are slated to face the proceedings in the absence of
their parents, who alone have the vocabulary and the knowledge to
properly explain to authorities what the context was that drove them
to seek asylum or enter the United States.

While
a federal judge ruled earlier this week that the reuniting of
separated families must be a priority for the Trump administration,
immigration lawyers are saying that this won’t help those parents
who have already been sent home while their children languish in U.S.
detention facilities. The lawyers also note that no actual model for
such a reunification exists yet.

The
revelation is just the latest indication of the enormous human costs
of Trump’s stepped-up and “zero tolerance” immigration
enforcement, mass confinement and deportation regime.

Confusion
Reigns but the War on Migrants Must Continue

Now
the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency has signaled that
it will cease handing parents over to authorities until the
administration can figure out how to make good on their prosecution
without ripping their children from their arms.

Such
a move would, in effect, be tantamount to the “catch and release”
program opposed by Trump, which saw unauthorized migrants being
released and told to return to face a judge in the future.

The
government has been unable to cope with the demands placed on its
detention and concentration camp facilities,
leading
to a crisis of overcrowding, rights abuses
,
and even calls by President Trump to suspend due process and
asylum-protection rights for unauthorized immigrants.

Tweeting
on Sunday
,
Trump said:

We
cannot allow all of these people to invade our Country. When somebody
comes in, we must immediately, with no Judges or Court Cases, bring
them back from where they came [sic].”

Cannot
accept all of the people trying to break into our Country. Strong
Borders, No Crime!”

The
CBP move also comes shortly after the Department of Defense confirmed
that it had been tasked by the administration to hold migrants in
camps within 45 days as an initial step toward managing the
encampment of a migrant “family population of up to 12,000 people.”

If
facilities are not available then camps meant to contain around 4,000
people each will be built at three separate locations, according to
the Pentagon.

Trump
appears to be faced with no good options, as the anger and outcry
over his policies continues to build. The existing laws and
restraints on the immigration enforcement regime that he inherited
from past administrations have been a mere inconvenience for the
president as he pursues this latest escalated war on migrants.

Northwest
Immigrant Rights Project head Jorge Baron told Reuters:

Here,
I think he is making it clear, he just doesn’t want anybody here.
He wants people to just be sent back, no matter what.”

In

Lees

Obama
Adviser: We Knew We Were Arming and Funding Terrorists in Syria

June
24, 2018 at 10:00 pm

Written by Tyler
Durden

(ZHE Op-ed) — Someone
finally asked Obama administration officials to own up to
the
rise of ISIS
 and
arming jihadists in Syria.

In
a wide ranging interview titled
“Confronting
the Consequences of Obama’s Foreign Policy”
 The
Intercept’s
 Mehdi
Hasan put the question to Ben Rhodes
,
who served as longtime deputy national security adviser at the White
House under Obama and is now promoting his newly published book,
The
World As It Is: Inside the Obama White House
.

Rhodes
has been described as being so trusted and close to Obama
that
he was
 in
the room” for almost every foreign policy decision of
significance
 that
Obama made during his eight years in office.
While
the
Intercept interview
is worth listening to in full, it’s the segment on Syria that
caught our attention.

In
spite of Rhodes trying to dance around the issue, he sheepishly
answers in the affirmative when Mehdi Hasan asks
the
following question about supporting jihadists in Syria
:

Did
you intervene too much in Syria?
Because
the CIA spent hundreds of millions of dollars funding and arming
anti-Assad rebels
, a
lot of those arms, as you know, ended up in the hands of jihadist
groups, some even in the hands of ISIS.

Your
critics would say you exacerbated that proxy war in Syria; you
prolonged the conflict in Syria;
you
ended up bolstering jihadists.

Rhodes
initially rambles about his book and “second guessing” Syria
policy in avoidance of the question. But Hasan pulls him back with
the following: “
Oh,
come on, but you were coordinating a lot of their arms.”

The
two spar over Hasan’s charge of “bolstering jihadists” in the
following
key
section of the interview
,
at the end of which Rhodes reluctantly answers
yeah…” — but
while trying to pass ultimate blame onto US allies Turkey, Qatar, and
Saudi Arabia (similar to what Vice President Biden did
in
a 2014 speech
):

MH: Oh,
come on, but you were coordinating a lot of their arms.
 You
know, the U.S. was heavily involved in that war with the Saudis and
the Qataris and the Turks.

BR: Well,
I was going to say:Turkey, Qatar, Saudi.

MH: You
were in there as well.

BR: Yeah,
but, the fact of the matter is
 that
once it kind of devolved into kind of a sectarian-based civil war
with different sides fighting for their perceived survival, I think
we, the ability to bring that type of situation to close, and part of
what I wrestled with in the book is the limits of our ability to pull
a lever and make killing like that stop once it’s underway.

National Security adviser Ben Rhodes and President Obama. Image

To
our knowledge this is
the
only time a major media organization has directly asked
 a
high ranking foreign policy adviser from the Obama administration to
own up to the years long
White
House support to jihadists in Syria
.

Though
the interview was published Friday, its significance went without
notice or comment in the mainstream media over the weekend (perhaps
predictably). Instead, what did circulate was a
Newsweek article
mocking “conspiracy theories” surrounding the rapid rise of
ISIS,
including
the following
:

President
Donald Trump has done little to dispel the myth of direct American
support for ISIS since he took office. On the campaign trail in
2016,
Trump
claimed
—without
providing any evidence—that President Obama and then-Secretary of
State Hillary Clinton co-founded the group and that ISIS “honors”
the former president.

Of
course,
the
truth is a bit more nuanced than that
,
as Trump himself elsewhere seemed to acknowledge, and which
ultimately led to the president reportedly shutting down the CIA’s
covert Syrian regime change program in the summer of 2017
while
complaining
to aides about the shocking brutality of the CIA-trained “rebels”.

Meanwhile,
mainstream media has been content to float the falsehood that
President Obama’s legacy is that he
“stayed
out” of Syria
,
instead merely approving some negligible level of aid to
so-called “moderate” rebels who were fighting both Assad
and
(supposedly)
the Islamic State.
Rhodes
has himself in prior interviews attempted to portray Obama as wisely
staying
“on
the sidelines” in Syria
.

But
as we’ve
pointed
out
 many
times over the years, this narrative ignores and seeks to
whitewash
possibly the
largest CIA covert program in history
,
started by Obama, which armed and funded a jihadist insurgency bent
of overthrowing Assad to the tune of
$1 billion
a year
 (one-fifteenth
of the CIA’s
publicly
known
 budget according
to leaked Edward Snowden documents
revealed
by the
Washington
Post
).

It
also ignores the well established fact, documented in both
US
intelligence reports
 and authenticated
battlefield footage
,
that
ISIS
and the Free Syrian Army (FSA) jointly fought under
a
single US-backed command structure
 during
the early years of the war in Syria, even as late as throughout
2013
— something
confirmed by University of Oklahoma professor Joshua Landis, widely
considered to be
the
world’s foremost expert on Syria
.

who

will be interesting to see years from now which “narrative”
concerning Obama’s legacy in the Syrian conflict future historians
choose to emphasize.

Obama
the president who “stayed out” and “on the sidelines” in
Syria? …Or Obama the president whose decisions
fueled
the rise of the most brutal terrorist organization the world has ever
seen?

Below
is the relevant excerpt covering Syria from the 26-minute Intercept
interview
 with
Obama deputy national-security adviser Ben Rhodes [bold emphasis
ours].

The
audio is available here — Mehdi Hasan begins questioning
Rhodes about Syria and ISIS at the 19-minute mark.

Mehdi
Hasan:
 My
guest today was at President Obama’s side every step of the way
over the course of those two terms in office. Ben Rhodes joined the
Obama election campaign in 2007 as a foreign-policy speechwriter,
when he was just 29, and rose to become a deputy national-security
adviser at the White House, who was so intellectually and
ideologically close to his boss that he was often described as having
a mind-meld with Obama.

Ben,
who currently works at the Obama Foundation, has written a new book,
“The World as It Is: A Memoir of the Obama White House.” And
earlier this week I interviewed him about Obama’s rather
contentious foreign policy record…

MH: But
Ben, here’s what I don’t get, if you’re saying this about
Afghanistan and prolonged conflict, all of which I don’t disagree
with what you’re saying.
 How
do you, then, explain Syria?
 Because
you’ve been criticized a lot. I’ve been listening to your
interviews on the book tour; you talk about in the book about how you
were criticized for not doing enough on Syria. I remember being an
event in D.C. a couple years ago where Syrian opposition members were
berating you for not doing enough at an event, and you often were the
public face who came out and defended Obama.
I
want to come to the other direction and say: Did you intervene too
much in Syria? Because the CIA spent hundreds of millions of dollars
funding and arming anti-Assad rebels
, a
lot of those arms, as you know, ended up in the hands of jihadist
groups, some even in the hands of ISIS.
 Your
critics would say you exacerbated that proxy war in Syria; you
prolonged the conflict in Syria;
you
ended up bolstering jihadists.

Ben
Rhodes:
 Well,
what I try to do in the book is, you know, essentially raise — all
the second guessing on Syria tends to be not what you expressed,
Mehdi, but the notion that we should’ve taken military action.

MH: Yes.

BR: What
I do in the book is I try to look back at 2011 and 2012, was there a
diplomatic window that we missed or that we, in some ways, escalated
its closure by pivoting to the call for Assad to go — which
obviously I believe should happen, I believe Assad has been a
terrible leader for Syria and has brutalized his people — but,
you know, was there a diplomatic initiative that could have been
taken to try to avert or at least minimize the extent of the civil
war. Because, you know, what ended up happening essentially there is,
you know, we were probably too optimistic that, you know, after
Mubarak went and Ben Ali and eventually Saleh and Gaddafi, that you
would have a situation where Assad would go. And, you know, not
factoring in enough the assistance he was going to get from Russia
and Iran, combined with his own nihilism, and how that could lead him
to survive. So I do look back at that potentially missed diplomatic
opportunity.

On
the support of the opposition, you know, I don’t know that I would
give us that much agency.

There
are a lot of people putting arms into Syria, funding all sorts of —

MHOh,
come on, but you were coordinating a lot of their arms.
 You
know,
the
U.S. was heavily involved in that war
with
the Saudis and the Qataris and the Turks.

BR: Well,
I was going to say:
Turkey,
Qatar, Saudi.

MH: You
were in there as well.

BR: Yeah,
but, the fact of the matter is that once it kind of devolved into
kind of a sectarian-based civil war with different sides fighting for
their perceived survival, I think we, the ability to bring that type
of situation to close, and part of what I wrestled with in the book
is the limits of our ability to pull a lever and make killing like
that stop once it’s underway.

So
that’s why I still look to that initial opening window. I also
describe, there was a slight absurdity in the fact that we were
debating options to provide military support to the opposition at the
same time that we were deciding to designate al-Nusra, a big chunk of
that opposition, as a terrorist organization.
So
there was kind of a schizophrenia that’s inherent in a lot of U.S.
foreign policy that came to a head in Syria.

MH: That’s
a very good word, especially to describ
Syria
policy…

schoenen schuift…..

In

How
the US, Under Obama, Created Europe’s Refugee Crisis

How the US, Under Obama, Created Europe’s Refugee Crisis

ERIC
ZUESSE
 |
24.06.2018 |
WORLD EUROPEMIDDLE
EAST

The
current US President, Donald Trump,
claimed
on June 18th
,
that Germany’s leadership, and the leadership in other EU nations,
caused the refugee-crisis that Europe is facing:

The
people of Germany are turning against their leadership as migration
is rocking the already tenuous Berlin coalition. Crime in Germany is
way up. Big mistake made all over Europe in allowing millions of
people in who have so strongly and violently changed their culture!”

The
US Government is clearly lying about this. The US Government itself
caused this crisis that Europeans are struggling to deal with. Would
the crisis even exist, at all, if the US had not invaded and tried to
overthrow (and in some instances actually overthrown) the governments
in Libya, Syria, and elsewhere — the places from which these
refugees are escaping? The US Government, and a few of its allies in
Europe (the ones who actually therefore really do share in
some of the authentic blame for this crisis) caused this war and
government-overthrow, etc., but Germany’s Government wasn’t among
them, nor were many of the others in Europe. If the US Government had
not led these invasions, probably not even France would have
participated in any of them. The US Government, alone, is responsible
for having caused these refugees. The US Government itself created
this enormous burden to Europe, and yet refuses to accept these
refugees that it itself had produced, by its having invaded and
bombed to overthrow (among others) Libya’s Government, and then
Syria’s Government, and by
its
aiding Al Qaeda in organizing and leading and arming, jihadists from
all over the world to come to Syria to overthrow Syria’s Government
and to replace it with one that would be selected by the US regime’s
key Middle Eastern ally, the Saud family, who own Saudi Arabia,
including its Government, and who are determined to take over Syria
.
Trump blames Angela Merkel for — in essence — having been an ally
of the US regime, a regime of aggression which goes back decades,
and
which Trump himself now is leading
, instead
of his ending, and of his restoring democracy to the United States,
and, finally, thus, his restoring freedom (from America), and peace,
to other nations, in Europe, and elsewhere (such as in Syria, Yemen,
etc.). He blames Merkel, not himself and his predecessor — not the
people who actually caused these refugees.

Hypocrisy
purer than that which Trump there expressed, cannot be imagined, and
this hypocrisy comes from Trump now,
no
longer
from
Obama, who, in fact, caused the problem.

As
the 2016 study,
“An
Overview of the Middle East Immigrants in the EU:
 Origin,
Status Quo and Challenges” states in its Abstract:

EU
has the most inhabited immigrant population; it has up to a
population of 56 million foreign-born people. And due to the
perennial war and chaos in the Middle East, the amount of relocated
population in the region, especially the number of refugees, ranks
the No.1 all over the world. … There are a large number of refugees
and asylum seekers heading to EU countries; it can be divided into
four stages. Since the Arab Spring, especially after the outbreak of
the civil war in Syria in 2011, and the rise of the “Islamic State”
in 2013, the whole EU area have experienced the biggest wave of
refugees since World War II.”

All
of these invasions have been, and are, invasions of countries where
the US regime demands regime-change.

In
order to understand the deeper source of this problem, one must
understand, first, the US regime’s
continuing
obsession to conquer Russia after its communism and Warsaw Pact
military alliance, had ended
 (click
onto that link to see the documentation); and, second, one needs to
understand the US regime’s
consequent
and consistent aim after the supposed end of the Cold War, to take
over control of Russia’s allied countries, including not only those
within the Soviet Union and its military Warsaw Pact, but also within
the Middle East, especially Syria and Iran, and even countries such
as Libya, where the leader was nominally Sunni but nonetheless
friendly toward Russia
.
(The link there provides documentation not only of what’s said
here, but it also documents that the alliance between the two
aristocracies, of the US and of Saudi Arabia, is essential to the US
aristocracy’s Middle-Eastern objective; and
Israel’s
aristocracy serves as an essential agent of the Sauds in this crucial
regard, because the Sauds rely heavily upon the Israeli regime to do
its lobbying in Washington
.
In other words: America’s consistent objective is to isolate Russia
so as for the US regime to emerge ultimately in a position to take
over Russia itself. That’s the deeper source of Europe’s
refugee-crisis.)

Back
at the start of the promised post-Cold-War period, in 1990, the US
regime, under its then-President, George Herbert Walker
Bush,
privately
and repeatedly agreed
 with
the USSR regime, under its then-President Mikhail Gorbachev, to end
the Cold War —
agreed
that NATO would not expand “one inch to the east”
 —
that there would be no expansion of the US military alliance against
the USSR (soon to become against Russia alone). The US regime’s
promise was that NATO would not take in and add to NATO’s
membership, any of the countries that then were either in the USS.R’s
military alliance the
Warsaw
Pact
 (Albania,
Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, and Romania) or
in
USSRitself other
than Russia
 (Armenia,
Azerbaijan, Byelorussia, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kirghizia,
Latvia, Lithuania, Moldavia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and
Uzbekistan), except for the eastern part of Germany. The US regime
simply lied. But the Russian Government followed through on all of
its commitments. Russia was now trapped, by Gorbachev’s having
trusted liars, whose actual goal turned out to be world-conquest
— not peace.

Currently,
the
membership
of NATO
 includes
all of the former Warsaw Pact nations, and now the US regime aims to
bring in also to “
NATO
membership: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, the former Yugoslav
Republic of Macedonia¹ and Ukraine.”
 Georgia
and Ukraine are the first parts of the former USSR republics — not
merely parts of the Warsaw Pact but parts now of the USSR itself —
to join the anti-Russian military alliance, if either of them gets
allowed in. The very possibility of this happening, goes beyond
anything that the naive, trusting, Mikhail Gorbachev, would ever have
imagined. He hadn’t the slightest idea of how evil was (and still
is) America’s Deep State (that which
controls
America
).
But now we all know. History is clear and unambiguous on the matter.

The
NATO mouthpiece, Brookings Institution, headlined on 15 November
2001,
“NATO
Enlargement: Moving Forward; Expanding the Alliance and Completing
Europe’s Integration”
 and
pretended that this expansion is being done in order to help
Europeans, instead of to conquer Russia.

Ukraine
has the longest of all European borders with Russia and so has been
America’s top target to seize. But before seizing it, the US had
tried in 2008 to turn Georgia against Russia, and the Georgian
Mikheil Saakashvili was a key US agent in that effort. Saakashvili
subsequently became involved in the violent coup that overthrew
Ukraine’s Government in February 2014. Saakashvili organized the
Georgian contingent of the snipers that were sent to Ukraine to shoot
into the crowds on the Maidan Square and kill both police and
demonstrators there, in such a way so that the bullets would
seem to
have come from the police (Berkut) and/or other forces of Ukraine’s
democratically elected Government. (Click on
this
link
 to
see two of the Georgian snipers casually describing their
participation in the coup, and referring tangentially to former
Georgian President Saakashvili’s role in it.
Here
is a more comprehensive video compilation
 describing
and showing the coup itself. As
I
have pointed out
,
the testimony of these two Georgian snipers is entirely consistent
with what the investigation by the EU’s Foreign Ministry had found
out on 26 February 2014 about the snipers, that
“they
were the same snipers, killing people from both sides” and that
these snipers were “from the new coalition government”
 instead
of from the government that was being overthrown — that it was a
coup, no ‘revolution’ such as Obama’s people claimed, and
Trump’s people now assert.) The US regime has agents in all regions
of the former Russia-affiliated bloc — not only in
Western Europe.

Obama’s
coup to grab Ukraine away from its
previous
neutrality
 and
to make it immediately
a
neo-Nazi rabidly anti-Russian country
,
has destroyed Ukraine — not only from the standpoint of the EU, but
(and click on the link if you don’t already know this)
from
the standpoint of the Ukrainian people themselves
.
Who
wouldn’t want
to leave there?

Europe
has refugees from the Ukrainian operation too, not
only (though
mainly) from the Middle Eastern ones.

Europe’s
enemy isn’t Russia’s aristocracy, but America’s aristocracy.
It’s the billionaires who control America’s international
corporations — not the billionaires who control Russia’s
international corporations — it is
specifically America’s
billionaires; it is
the
people who control the US Government
;
these, and no Russians at all, are the actual decision-makers, who
are behind bringing down Europe. In order for Europe to win,
Europeans must know whom their real enemies are. The root of the
problem is in the US, Europe’s now
fake ‘ally’.
Today’s America isn’t the America of the Marshall Plan. The US
Government has since been taken over by gangsters. And they want to
take over the world. Europe’s refugee-crisis is simply one of the
consequences.

In
fact,
Obama
had started, by no later than 2011, to plan these regime-change
operations, in Libya, Syria, and Ukraine
.
But, in any case, none of the regime-change operations that caused
the current unprecedented flood of refugees into Europe started
because of what Europe’s leaders did (other than their cooperating
with the US regime). Today’s American Government is Europe’s
enemy, no friend at all, to the peoples of Europe. Trump’s blaming
this crisis on Europe’s leaders isn’t just a lie; it is a
slanderous one.

And
this fact is separate from Trump’s similar slanderous lie against
the refugees themselves. On May 8th, Germany’s
Die
Welt
 newspaper
had headlined
“Number
of crimes falls to lowest level since 1992”
 and
reported that Germany’s Interior Minister, Horst Seehofer,
announced the 2017 national crime statistics, and he said, “Germany
has become safer,” the safest in the last 30 years. Seehofer
happens to be a member of Chancellor Merkel’s Administration who is
angling to replace her as Chancellor by appealing to the strong
anti-immigrant portion of their own conservative party, but even he
had to admit, essentially, that the anti-immigrant slur that Trump
subsequently made on June 18th is a bald lie; it’s even the
exact opposite of the truth. Trump’s tweeted comment then was a
lying slander not only against Merkel and other European leaders, but
also against the refugees that the US regime itself had produced. How
depraved is that? How depraved is Trump?

The
refugee crisis isn’t due to the refugees themselves; and it’s not
due to Europe’s leaders; it is due to the almost constantly lying
US regime — the people who actually control America’s Government
and America’s international corporations.

On
June 21st, Manlio Dinucci at Global Research headlined
“The
Circuit of Death in the ‘Enlarged Mediterranean’”
 and
he opened by saying, “The politico-media projectors, focussed as
they are on the migratory flow from South to North across the
Mediterranean, are leaving other Mediterranean flows in the dark –
those moving from North to South, comprised of military forces and
weapons.” But the world’s biggest international seller of weapons
is
the
US, not the EU
;
so, his placing the main focus on European billionaires was wrong.
The main culprits are on Trump’s own side of the Atlantic, and this
is what is being ignored, on both sides of the Atlantic. The real
problem isn’t across the Mediterranean; it is across the Atlantic.
That’s where Europe’s enemy is.

On
7 August 2015, I headlined
“The
US Is Destroying Europe”
 and
reported that:

In
Libya, Syria, Ukraine, and other countries at the periphery or edges
of Europe, US President Barack Obama has been pursuing a policy of
destabilization, and even of bombings and other military assistance,
that drives millions of refugees out of those peripheral areas and
into Europe, thereby adding fuel to the far-rightwing fires of
anti-immigrant rejectionism, and of resultant political
destabilization, throughout Europe, not only on its peripheries, but
even as far away as in northern Europe.”

It’s
continuing under Trump.

Yes,
US Immigration Prisons Are Absolutely ‘Concentration Camps’

The ongoing furor over a drastic increase in the mass confinement of
migrant families and children has forced people in the United States
to cast a hard look at the immigration enforcement regime that has
aggressively developed in recent years.

The
discussion is increasingly recasting immigrant detention centers as
U.S. concentration camps. This has brought questions
of justice, human and civil rights back into focus — in contrast to
the Trump administration’s narrow reliance on the question of
law-and-order.

Prisons
for detained migrants conform to the basic, literal meaning of a
concentration camp: these are security enclosures where masses of
people from a targeted community are isolated from the general
population and subject to confinement, usually for political
purposes. Deprived of liberty, legal protections, or medical care,
those incarcerated in such camps see their lives reduced to a basic
biological existence.

Sexual
abuse, physical punishment, psychological trauma and even the
 forced
injection of children
 with
drugs are the daily reality for those captured at the border by U.S.
Customs and Border Protection officers or abducted from their homes
and workplaces by the Department of Homeland Security – Immigration
and Customs Enforcement, or DHS-ICE.

While
the term concentration camp is often
dismissed as extreme or exaggerated given its connotation of
Nazi Konzentrationslager like Auschwitz or Dachau —
which could more accurately be called death camps or forced
enslavement camps
 — concentration camps were widely used
by Western governments throughout the early 20th century as a
means to cope with insurgent populations in the colonies and waves of
migrants fleeing war in Europe.

Now,
in the 21st century, the U.S. immigrant enforcement regime has
assumed monstrous proportions. The country is being progressively
enveloped in a steel-clad mesh of stringent bureaucracy and inhumane
facilities devoted to legalized violence toward immigrants —
naturally, this has come in the name of security, sovereignty, and
enforcing the law.

Euphemisms,
Lies, and Mass Confinement

Like
the fig-leaf covering Adam and Eve’s genitals in Renaissance
paintings, a euphemism is a word or phrase meant to hide the true
nature of something considered embarrassing or offensive. Euphemisms
are common in our social interactions: We’re sleeping together; I’m
visiting the water closet; he passed away; we’re downsizing the
staff.

For
politicians, euphemisms are the bread and butter of “talking-points”
(propaganda) and serve to shield the state from public scrutiny and
criticism. Authorities will describe repressive police state measures
as necessary to
public
safety,
while
the elimination of public services is called
balancing
the budget.
 Likewise, militaries
will refer to a blatantly imperialist war as a “
humanitarian
intervention,”
while
an indiscriminate bombing
campaign and
capture of enemy-held territory is an act of “
liberation.”

In
the world of criminal justice, solitary confinement and total
isolation from human contact — a form of torture – takes place in
the Security Housing Unit (SHU), a phrase that almost sounds like a
type of condominium apartment.

Immigration-related
U.S. concentration camps come in different varieties, each with its
own preferred euphemisms: there are
detention
centers
 for
adults,
 childcare
facilities
 for
young children ripped from their families; and for those incarcerated
migrant adults (usually women) fortunate enough to remain with their
children, there are
 Family
Residential Centers
 –
a cheerful term that makes it sound as if families are having a
therapeutic retreat at Club Med rather than facing incarceration.

The
Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma, Washington, provides a good
example of the concentration camps operated by the commercial prison
corporation, GEO Group. Immigrant detainees who went on hunger strike
last year describe the facility as riddled with filthy, exploitative
and abusive conditions. Incarcerated migrants are given cheap,
poor-quality food while being forced to wear soiled underwear.
Medical care access is restricted and often administered by
unqualified prison guards themselves; it’s not uncommon that
prisoners die from treatable diseases like staph infection,
pneumonia, or diabetes.

Those
confined to such camps “temporarily” spend much of their time
with no light at the end of the tunnel, as immigration court
proceedings face repeated delays without explanation. Forced to
languish in horrendous conditions for an indefinite period, prisoners
inevitably fall into a state of deep despondency that sometimes leads
to suicide. In other cases, prisoners who wage hunger strikes face
punitive detention and physical abuse. Prisoners are also expected to
take part in manual labor tasks, where they are paid $1 per hour to
take care of the upkeep of the facilities, drawing comparisons to
enslaved prison labor.

At
“childcare facilities,” young children ripped from their
families’ arms are kenneled in wire-cage compounds or encamped in
overcrowded former Wal-Marts where they are subject to 22-hour
lockdown and given only two hours of fresh air — effectively
amounting to conditions of punitive incarceration for children as
young as seven years old.

Even
toddlers under the age of five have been placed in
three
 so-called “tender
age shelters” located in Texas, with a fourth compound planned for
Houston at a former warehouse slated to be re-purposed into a
“permanent unaccompanied alien children program facility. ”During
the  Second World War, the government vocabulary was riddled
with similarly clean, bureaucratic euphemisms that obscured the
persecution of a community seen as a hostile and inherently “alien”
minority: Japanese immigrants and Japanese-descended citizens of the
U.S.

The
Wartime Precedent: Japanese-American Incarceration

On
February 19, 1942, long-seething anti-Asian racism and the Imperial
Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor culminated in the signing of
Executive Order 9066 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The order
gave xenophobia the seal of approval as official state policy and
decreed the “evacuation” or forced removal of 120,000 U.S.
residents of Japanese ancestry from their homes. Over two-thirds of
those impacted were U.S. citizens, including children.

The
mass incarceration of Japanese-descended families was justified on
the basis of a fear of sabotage by a yet-to-be-exposed “fifth
column,” as well as claims by military authorities that Justice
Department investigations were unable to keep pace with wartime
national-security needs. However, Depression-era white farmers also
saw Japanese Americans as a threat to their economic interests and
had clamored for stripping citizenship from the “Japs.”

apanese
immigrants and Japanese Americans were detained and placed in
assembly centers (temporary detention centers) and relocation
centers, which were at the time depicted as akin to “summer camps.”
In reality, these were concentration camps in the middle of harsh
desert climates, which were surrounded by guard towers and
barbed-wire fences, where Japanese-descended prisoners were overseen
and routinely abused by U.S. Army personnel equipped with machine
guns and even tanks.

By
January 2, 1945, the camps were closed; not a single incarcerated
Japanese had been successfully prosecuted as a spy or agent of the
Japanese government. Yet thousands of

Japanese
Americans incarcerated at the notorious Tule Lake Segregation Center
in California had already been coerced into renouncing their U.S.
citizenship, and were subsequently deported en masse back
to a Japan that was shattered by war.

Descendants
of incarcerated Japanese citizens and immigrants have struggled hard
in recent years to ensure that wartime mass-confinement is described
in terms that accurately reflect the unjust nature of their
experience. In 2013, the Japanese American Community League responded
to criticism over the use of the term “concentration camp,”
stating:

Misleading
government euphemisms like relocation camp, assembly center,
and internment camp
should no longer be an insurmountable
obstacle to understanding. Ridiculous notions that we were being
protected or pampered will diminish.

Honest
terms like American concentration camp, incarceration camp,
illegal detention center, forced removal
, and others, can now
truthfully tell a story: How the government used language to cover up
the denial of constitutional rights, the racism, forced removal,
incarceration, and oppressive conditions directed against 120,000
innocent people of Japanese ancestry.”

By
2015, Republican then-candidate Donald Trump began floating the idea
of a database of Muslim Americans to prevent, “until we are able to
determine and understand,” the alleged threat of “horrendous
attacks by people that believe only in Jihad.”

When
asked if he would have supported the wartime incarceration of
Japanese Americans, the former reality-TV star answered that it may
have been an option he would have favored. He also suggested that the
concentration camps may have played a role in the U.S. victory over
Japan. Trump explained:

I
would have had to be there at the time to tell you, to give you a
proper answer … It’s a tough thing. It’s tough..  But you
know war is tough. And winning is tough. We don’t win anymore. We
don’t win wars anymore. We don’t win wars anymore. We’re not a
strong country anymore. We’re just so off.”

90s
Roots: White “Nativist” Anxiety and the Neoliberal Offensive

Aside
from the deeply racist, white-supremacist roots of the United States
as a whole, Trump-style xenophobia and anti-immigrant racism became a
major phenomenon in the 1990s, when mass-media outlets and right-wing
politicians filled Americans’ heads with lurid tales of the threat
posed by brown-skinned foreigners. War and terrorism in the Middle
East flooded headlines as the Gulf War in Iraq and resistance to
Israel in Palestine and Lebanon raged.

Meanwhile,
at the southern U.S. border, tens of thousands of Mexican migrants
poured through as a result of the desperate conditions and economic
chaos unleashed by the North American Free Trade Agreement of 1994
and previous neoliberal policies foisted on pliant Mexican
governments by the World Trade Organization (WTO). NAFTA led to a
major influx of investment in Mexico by Canadian and U.S.-based
multinationals, yet the net effect was the plundering of the
country’s resources and wealth, the devastation of its agricultural
sector and rural regions, and a huge uptick in unemployment and
poverty in the country.

As
scholar Richard D. Vogel wrote in his 2007
meticulously-researched
essayTransient
Servitude
:

U.S.
financial and political intervention in the national life of Mexico
during the 1980s and 1990s, often carried out through the WTO, has
pauperized the Mexican working class. It is they who have had to
suffer the brunt of the mandatory austerity programs, strict debt
restructuring, and privatization initiatives that were imposed on
Mexico in the 1980s after the credit binge of the Mexican bourgeoisie
during the previous decade. The result of this foreign intervention
has been widespread unemployment and displacement from the land that
has produced onerous hardship and sparked internal migration from the
interior of Mexico to the industrialized border region and to the
United States.”

Unauthorized
migration from Mexico became a driving force for nativist resentment
and racism among white workers, resulting in a push for
anti-immigrant laws like California’s Proposition 187 ballot
initiative in 1994. White workers found convenient scapegoats in the
Mexican undocumented workforce, despite the fact that it was U.S.
capitalism as a whole that had undercut their jobs and living
standards through the search for cheap labor in Mexico and other
offshore locations.

The
U.S. responded to the nativist clamor by militarizing the U.S. border
— resulting in the deaths of thousands of border-crossers who died
in the harsh frontier climate — and by conducting showy Border
Patrol operations and raids such as 1993’s Hold the Line in
San Diego and 1995’s Operation Gatekeeper in El
Paso, which did little to stem the flow of migrants.

However,
the generally lax open border policy provided employers and
corporations with access to a huge pool of cheap labor to tap into,
handsomely benefiting a then-booming U.S. economy. By 2005, about 12
million undocumented migrants — over half of whom were Mexican —
resided in the United States.

The
2006 implementation of the U.S.-Central America Free Trade Agreement
(CAFTA, now CAFTA-DR) had a similarly negative impact on development
in Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala,
Honduras, and Nicaragua, whose governments each signed. Rural
migrants were displaced and found no employment in cities, fueling
the growth of organized crime and acting as a sharp push factor for
migration to Mexico and the United States.

Subsequent
administrations’ security agreements with right-wing governments
and imperialist meddling — such as the Obama-Clinton State
Department’s success in overthrowing left-populist Honduran
President Manuel Zelaya in June 2009 — further
exacerbated the
instability and misery plaguing Central America, creating
an
inexorable
current
 that
continues to tens of thousands of desperate migrants to the doorstep
of the southern U.S. border in their life-or-death bid for asylum.

Fortress
America” and the Bipartisan Construction of DHS-ICE

The
double standards inherent in U.S. partisan politics have led some to
believe that concentration camps were reintroduced on such a broad
scale under Trump, when in fact the mass confinement of
asylum-seekers and non-citizens was a daily reality under the
administrations of both George W. Bush and Barack Obama, who both
oversaw the expansion of the sprawling DHS machinery.

Indeed,
ever since the Clinton administration’s 1996 Immigration Act, minor
misdemeanor convictions are enough reason for even legal permanent
residents to be deported.

This
history is often ignored by liberal critics of the Trump regime,
owing in no small part to his absolute disregard for the
multicultural sensitivities of his predecessors who built the
immigration enforcement apparatus. The president has no qualms about
resorting to blatantly dehumanizing rhetoric when describing whole
categories of asylum-seekers as “animals” that are “infesting”
the United States, drawing comparisons between the right-wing U.S.
leader’s political ideology and that of Nazi Germany.

Yet
Trump is merely picking up the baton that was passed to him, albeit
with a relish that appears to be both calculating and visceral.

After
September 11, 2001, the U.S. was pushed over the brink by hysteria
over the fear of another spectacular terrorist attack. Muslim
Americans and immigrant communities from Asia, Africa and the Middle
East became the target not only of racist attacks on the streets, but
also of anti-terrorism bills like the USA PATRIOT Act. The act
significantly widened the ability of immigration agents to conduct
mass-detention sweeps of terrorism suspects, while allowing for the
mandatory detention of non-citizens suspected of terrorism for up to
48 hours after arrest.

In
2003, the PATRIOT Act was followed by the establishment of the
Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which consisted of three
separate bureaus: Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Customs
and Border Protection (CBP), and Citizen and Immigration Services
(CIS). ICE began to extend its facilities, field offices and subfield
offices across the country.

In
June, 2003, ICE introduced its 10-year strategic enforcement plan,
Operation ENDGAME. The plan
 called
for
 information
sharing across government agencies while also explicitly calling for
the forcible removal of the entire unauthorized migrant population of
12 million people from the United States by 2014. In a memorandum
describing the program, ICE Office of Detention and Removal
Operations (DRO) director Anthony Tangemann stated:

DRO
provides the endgame to immigration enforcement and that is the
removal of all removable aliens. This is also the essence of our
mission statement and the ‘golden measure’ to our successes …
We must strive for 100% removal rate.”

Obviously,
the plan was never fulfilled, yet the Obama administration stubbornly
pushed forward in the fortification of ICE as a highly-funded,
fully-staffed and largely unaccountable organization with facilities
and contracted privately-operated concentration camps dotting the
entire country.

While
supporters of Obama will quickly point to his 2013 granting of
temporary relief to non-prioritized unauthorized migrant youth, in
the form of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA),
immigration-rights advocates will be just as quick to point to his
introduction of Secure Communities: A Comprehensive Plan to Identify
and Remove Criminal Aliens (SCOMM).

SCOMM,
which was guided by the goals stipulated in Operation Endgame,
cleared the way for ICE to deport hundreds of thousands of
unauthorized migrants through biometric data-sharing between federal
immigration authorities and thousands of local jails — leading to
the deportation of people convicted of minor crimes such as driving
under the influence or the possession of small amounts of drugs.

SCOMM
was eventually phased out by Obama owing to public pressure, only to
be
 revived by
the Trump administration. Obama’s campaign promises to reform the
U.S. immigration enforcement regime were never fulfilled and instead,
around three million were deported on his watch – earning the
former president the ignominious title “Deporter-In-Chief.”

The
Danger of Ignoring Homeland Security State Cruelty

Amid
the exponential growth of the federal government’s need for jails,
encampments, and kennels for migrant families, immigration-related
concentration camps are increasingly being normalized by an unashamed
Republican Party with Trump as its capo and ideological lodestar.
Even mainstream news hosts like Laura Ingraham of FOX News have
audaciously described incarceration facilities for children as
“essentially summer camps.”

And
on Wednesday — lost in the fanfare of his apparent
family-separation feint — Trump issued an executive order extending
the ability of ICE to incarcerate unauthorized migrants from 20 days
to an indefinite period.

The
United States government has long maintained the largest and most
technologically advanced system of mass confinement in human history.
Over time, a growing component of this system has consisted of new
migrant concentration camp.

It’s
about time that we recognize what led the U.S. to this point and
where that path may lead. Even the most superficial reading of
history reveals how in times of crisis, legal rights taken for
granted as permanent or foundational vanish like a puff of smoke when
security threats and a push to restore “law and order” casts a
dragnet into civilian populations.

In
1973, constitutional scholar Alexander Bickel offered a prescient
criticism of the concept of “citizenship as the tie that binds the
individual to government and [serves] as the source of his rights,”
noting that the right to citizenship can easily be revoked at the
will of the state:

A
relationship between government and the governed that turns on
citizenship can always be dissolved or denied … No matter what
safeguards it may be equipped with, it is at best something that was
given, and given to some and not to others, and it can be taken away.
It has always been easier, it always will be easier, to think of
someone as a noncitizen than to decide that he is a nonperson.”

As
history teaches us, threats to the nation — both external or
internal — can suddenly or gradually change. Today’s
flash-in-the-pan monster at our door might be migrant “animals”
from Latin America, but tomorrow it may take the form of anyone
or any group
who threatens or disrupts social order — be
it a religious group, a national minority, the swelling homeless
population, the politically non-compliant or any other class of
people criminalized by a government that exclusively caters to the
needs of capital.

Disoriented
by sensationalist propaganda presented as objective news or informed
commentary, U.S. citizens gripped by anxiety and fear eagerly cheer
on the promise of misery for the “alien” as a means to ensure
fortune and safety for the “native.” Blinded by the false pride
found in white supremacy and the nostalgic idyll peddled by Trump and
his cohort, “conservatives” applaud as new walls, “residential
centers” and open-air penitentiaries for “illegals” are
constructed in their hometowns.

Trapped
in a daze of patriotic fervor, supporters of the punitive immigrant
policy regime under Trump remain oblivious to the consequences of
their faith in state violence guided by policies of official bigotry.

And
as for the rest of us, wringing our hands and expressing outrage
alone will get us nowhere in terms of preventing systematic cruelty
and state terror. Instead, we should continue to develop a serious
analysis of the overall situation and organize to defend our basic
rights before the windows of opportunity are bolted shut.

CONCENTRATION
CAMPS FOR CHILDREN IN THE US

SOME
SIMPLE FACTS YOU ARE NOT BEING TOLD

THIS
IS A BUSINESS OPERATION

  1. Seeking
asylum in the US is not a crime. It’s an administrative process.
After the hearings, the US can always no to the application.

  1. There’s
absolutely no legal basis to take the children of asylum seekers
    from their parents.

  1. People
who cross the border illegally and are found not to have criminal
records used to be returned to the border they crossed. Now they are
being jailed for six months – at taxpayer expense – and having
    their children taken from them.

  1. The
revenues for these interments are going to the shareholders of
    PRIVATELY owned prisons.

  1. Privately
owned Prison companies like GEO and CoreCivic donated nearly
$500,000 to support Trump’s election campaign and underwrite his
    inauguration.

  1. The
Trump administration has no procedure in place for reuniting
children with the parents they have been taken from.

     7.
The government will not disclose where the children they have seized
are being held. Nor               will they allow Congressman or the news media to
enter these facilities.

In

In West-Mosul is

Hetzelfde

The
US Annihilated Raqqa While Allowing Thousands of Terrorists to Escape
— Why?

June

Written by Darius
Shahtahmasebi

(ET— Amnesty
International released an explosive
report last
week, which described the US-led coalition’s disproportionate and
indiscriminate war in Raqqa as the US-led “war of annihilation”.

The
report confirmed what some people have suspected for a while but few
have dared to even talk about. Namely, that the United States and its
allies have
completely
destroyed
 a
Syrian city, and left almost nothing but death and destruction in
their wake.

In
coming to its conclusion, Amnesty researchers visited 42 coalition
air strike sites across the city and interviewed 112 civilian
residents who had survived the ordeal. The results of their
investigation shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who has been paying
attention, as approximately a year ago,
Reuters described the
plight of one resident in Raqqa who found several of his neighbours
lying dead on the street, with cats eating the corpses.

The
report even details four cases of civilian families who, between
them, lost 90 relatives and neighbours. One family lost 39 in total,
all of them allegedly killed by coalition air strikes. This would
also not be a surprise to anyone who cared enough to follow this
story closely, particularly with the
Intercept’s
shocking article last year
titled,
‘Entire families are being killed by US airstrikes in Raqqa,
Syria’.

To
be fair, US President Donald Trump did
once
say
 he
would “take out” the families of
Islamic
State
 (IS)
fighters. He also
once
asked
 the
CIA why they delayed an air strike on a terrorist target so as to
avoid hitting the house with his family inside it. In other words,
the Commander-in-Chief of the world’s military superpower doesn’t
have a clue how international humanitarian law works.

When
so many civilians are killed in attack after attack, something is
clearly wrong, and to make this tragedy worse, so many months later
the incidents have not been investigated. The victims deserve
justice. The Coalition’s claims that its precision air campaign
allowed it to bomb IS out of Raqqa while causing very few civilian
casualties do not stand up to scrutiny. On the ground in Raqqa, we
witnessed a level of destruction comparable to anything we’ve seen
in decades of covering the impact of wars,”
 said Donatella
Rovera, Senior Crisis Response Adviser at Amnesty International.

Most credible
estimates
 of
the assessment of the damage done to Raqqa are that a whopping 80% of
Raqqa was uninhabitable after the US had supposedly “liberated”
its population. This isn’t something the American media even took
on with a conscience, or even felt the need to apologise for; this
was something they actively bragged about.

Looking
at photographs of the ruined, desolate streets of what was once the
Islamic State’s capital of Raqqa is a reminder of the overwhelming,
pitilessly effective military power of the United
States,”
 bragged the Washington
Post’s David Ignatius in an op-ed last year. “The heaps
of rubble in Raqqa that once housed terrorists and torturers convey a
bedrock lesson, as valid now as in 1945: It’s a mistake to
provoke the United States. It may take the country a while to
respond to a threat, but once the machine of US power is engaged,
it’s relentless – so long as the political will exists to sustain
it,”
Ignatius
continued.

For
all of Bashar al Assad’s flaws, and despite all of the mounting
allegations of war crimes against him, after Russia and Syria retook
the city of Aleppo in 2016, hundreds of
thousands of
refugees
returned back
to live in the city. An Aleppo cathedral even
reopened last
year with a classical concert (the US-backed rebels occupying Aleppo
previously were not big on religious diversity). I don’t know about
you, but I haven’t heard of any concerts taking place in Raqqa thus
far.

But
here is where things get even more disturbing. On November 13, 2017,
the
BBC dropped
a bombshell
report exposing
how the US cut a secret deal with “hundreds” of IS fighters and
their families to leave the Syrian city of Raqqa under the “gaze of
the US and British-led coalition and Kurdish-led forces who control
the city”.
The
US
 even
allegedly allowed the escape of some of IS’ “most notorious”
members, as well as its foreign fighters and tonnes of weapons and
ammunition.

Almost
a month later,
Reuters took
the story even further and
reported that
a high-level defector from the Kurdish-led forces in Syria had
revealed that the number of IS fighters given safe passage was
actually in the thousands, not hundreds. This account was then
seconded by a security official in Turkey.

So,
on the one hand, you have the US exacting all of its military might
and power to completely raze Raqqa to the ground, while on the other,
they were doing all of this while allowing their alleged targets to
escape safely. This ultimately begs the question: who were they
trying to kill that entire time? What crime did the residents of
Raqqa commit that they had to suffer and endure this criminal
behaviour?

It
also cannot be overlooked that the US did all of this without
any
discernible
legal basis
.
For those of you who need this spelt out: the US does not have any
legal mandate to conduct military operations in Syria. This is not
some secret or mere mistake or accident, the US government’s own
lawyers have been advising them of this, even under the
Obama
administration
.

But
don’t take my word for it. Speaking to Syrian opposition members at
a meeting that took place at the Dutch mission to the United Nations
(UN), then Secretary of State John Kerry
stated,

The
problem is that the Russians don’t care about international law,
but we do. And we don’t have the basis – our lawyers tell us –
unless we have the UN Security Council Resolution, which the Russians
can veto, and
the
Chinese
,
or unless we are under attack from the folks there, or unless we are
invited in.
Russia is
invited in by the legitimate regime – well it’s illegitimate in
our mind – but by the regime. And so they were invited in and we
are not invited in.

We’re
flying in an airspace there where they can turn on the air defences
and we would have a very different scene. The only reason they are
letting us fly is because we are going after IS. If we were going
after Assad, those air defences, we would have to take out all the
air defences, and we don’t have the legal justification, frankly,
unless we stretch it way beyond the law.”

Despite
having this knowledge, it didn’t stop the US from doing what it
does best – accounting for at least 90% of the strikes on Raqqa.
Ignatius is wrong: it is not a mistake to provoke the United States.
Raqqa never provoked anyone. Just like Vietnam, Libya,
Korea,
Iraq and
everywhere else before it, it joins a long list of territories forced
to pay the highest price for reasons that cannot and will not ever be
justified, let alone investigated by the United States.
