Een ongelofelijk staaltje volksbedrog: gistermiddag het nieuws, dat ‘GroenLinks’ (lees: AsgrauwRechts) en de PvdA hebben laten weten, tegen het corrigerende referendum te zijn……..
Gijs van Dijk, Tweede Kamerlid van de PvdA, liet weten, dat de PvdA na het Oekraïne-referendum* afziet van verdere promotie voor het referendum en dan m.n. het corrigerend referendum…….
PvdA en GroenLinks doen alsof alleen rechtse Nederlanders (zoals de achterban van de PVV) zich hebben verzet tegen het associatieverdrag met Oekraïne, dat is echter een leugen van enorm formaat!
Ongelofelijk dat de PvdA zich nu tegen het democratische middel referendum durft te keren, immers als er geen verzet tegen het associatieverdrag met Oekraïne was ontstaan, was de PvdA zonder meer akkoord gegaan, zonder het volk daarin te kennen……
Moet u nagaan: tegelijkertijd durfde van Dijk te spreken over het vertrouwen van de mensen in de politiek……. De PvdA en GroenLinks (en de andere zich tegen een referendum kerende partijen) hebben geen vertrouwen in het volk, zoveel hebben deze partijen weer duidelijk gemaakt….
Nog steeds snapt men in Den Haag niet, dat alle ondemocratische handelingen een groot deel van de bevolking opzet tegen de politiek, handelingen zoals het door de strot proppen bij het volk van het associatieverdrag met Oekraïne, of het ‘vrijhandelsverdrag’ CETA (en TTIP, dat even in de koelkast staat)……….
Het is maar goed dat de verkiezingen al voorbij zijn, gegarandeerd dat de PvdA en GroenLinks zich voor de verkiezingen niet zo durfden uit te laten over het volk, dat zij (nogmaals) moeten dienen……
Conclusie: het wordt het Nederlandse volk nog steeds kwalijk genomen, dat men met meerderheid tegen dit achterlijke associatieverdrag met Oekraïne heeft gestemd……. Uiteraard gaat de EU (in de vorm van de NAVO) Oekraïne helpen ‘tegen de agressie van de Russen’, hoe de grijnzende VVD hufter Rutte het ook draait of keert……. Agressie van de Russen? U snapt het al, juist het beleid van de VS met de NAVO aan de hand, is uiterst agressief….. Gelukkig heeft men in Rusland nog nadenkende politici, anders waren we allang in een oorlog gedompeld, WOIII…….
* Het Oekraïne-referendum, over het ons al bijna door de strot geduwde associatieverdrag met dit land, geleid door een junta met de (uiterst) corrupte neonazi-vriend Porosjenko en zijn fascistenmaten. Een land dat zo goed als failliet is, maar desondanks wordt volgepropt met EU belastinggeld……… In deze kan alleen een vergelijking worden gemaakt met Griekenland, wat betreft dit volproppen van een arm land met enorme bedragen. Gisteren ontving ik via Twitter een e-paasei van The Canary. De Britse premier May, die je nu voluit oorlogsmisdadiger mag noemen, al was het alleen al* vanwege de Britse wapenexport aan Saoedi-Arabië, was op bezoek in dat land. Wat betreft die oorlogsmisdaad: Groot-Brittannië levert onder meer clustermunitie aan S-A en traint bovendien het leger van deze reli-fascistische dictatuur……..
U begrijpt vast wel waarom May op bezoek was in Saoedi-Arabië, juist: om nog meer oorlogstuig aan deze terreurstaat te verkopen. Oorlogstuig dat S-A inzet tegen de Jemenitische bevolking, waar S-A ook nog eens bewust een hongersnood heeft gecreëerd (weet u nog, Giro555???)…..

Vanmiddag weer het ‘concert’ van het luchtalarm. Zodat u weet waar u (aan toe) bent, als men kernraketten gaat afschieten: buiten de atoomschuilkelders!!
Op BBC World Service radio, gistermiddag (na 13.00 u. CET) een uitvoerig gesprek met een gevangengenomen Oekraïense soldaat, die na gevangenneming door de separatisten in Oost-Oekraïne, 13 maanden opgesloten zat.
Stemde af toen de uitzending al begonnen was, maar kan me net voorstellen, dat er uitgelegd is aan de luisteraar, wat deze soldaat ver van zijn huis deed, in het oosten van het land, in de Donetsk (of: Donbass) Regio. Of wat die soldaat in dat gebied heeft uitgevreten, meevechtend aan de kant van neonazi-bataljons……..
Een bijna continu triest pianomuziekje onder het geheel, moest de luisteraar tot tranen brengen, als betrof het een verhaal over een op gruwelijke manier vermoordde familie……..
Keer op keer werd er gevraagd naar de emotionele toestand van de soldaat en zijn moeder……. Ja, die moeder was ook veelvuldig aan het woord >> dat het voor haar allemaal zo verschrikkelijk was geweest (alweer op dat muziekje….).
De soldaat vertelde, dat hij gevangen werd gehouden in een kelder en alleen heel af en toe ‘s nachts werd gelucht. Aan het eind van z’n verhaal was hij plotseling regelmatig buiten werkzaam, ‘ maar goed…’
Na te zijn vrijgelaten is de soldaat weer voor het leger gaan werken, alleen niet in het ‘conflictgebied’
Dit was het zoveelste staaltje anti-Russische propaganda op de BBC, dit daar Rusland minstens één keer per dag over de hekel wordt gehaald. Met andere woorden: het noemen van de woorden ‘pro-Russische rebellen’, is voor de gemiddelde BBC luisteraar een reden om in elkaar te krimpen en onmiddellijk te weten wie de kwaaie pier is…….. Ofwel: hersenspoelen middels nepnieuws (of ‘fake news’, wat u wilt), dan wel door het brengen van ronduit anti-Russische propaganda…….
Moet wel eerlijk toegeven, dat niet één keer werd gezegd, dat de soldaat tijdens zijn gevangenschap werd gemarteld, al zou het zomaar kunnen, dat het verhaal daarover zo krakkemikkig en ongeloofwaardig in elkaar zat, dat men van uitzending afzag……..
Intussen hebben de neonazi-bataljons van Porosjenko al meer dan 10.000 mensen in Oost-Oekraïne vermoord, waaronder een fiks aantal vrouwen en kinderen……
Alsof men voor niets in opstand kwam in Oost-Oekraïne, nadat men de door het overgrote deel van die regio, democratisch gekozen president had afgezet in een door de VS opgezette, gefinancierde (met 4 miljard dollar!!) en geregisseerde staatsgreep (inclusief voorafgaande opstand)……… Of men voor niets in opstand kwam, nadat een door neonazi’;s gecontroleerde junta het bewind in Oekraïne overnam. Je mag toch godverdomme hopen, als iets dergelijks hier zou gebeuren, men inderdaad naar de wapens grijpt!!

Het gesprek/discussie in de video werd o.a. gevoerd n.a.v. de veroordeling van Ricky Ross, een cocaïne dealer, die stelt voor de CIA te hebben gewerkt. In dit gesprek stelt ex-DEA agent Michale Levine, dat de CIA aan de top van de VS maffia staat. Onder regie van de CIA en onder bescherming van het Mexicaanse leger werden bijvoorbeeld grote partijen coke gesmokkeld naar de VS!!
Levine schreef een boek over deze zaken: ‘Deep Cover’, later (in 2014) werd er een film gemaakt over het leven van Gary Webb, waarin ook voornoemde zaken zichtbaar worden gemaakt: ‘Kill the Messenger‘ (onder de link een promo voor de film).

Wat stelt (excuseer) godverdomme dat hele VN Vluchtelingenverdrag nog voor???? Waar is de beschaving en nog enig ethisch gevoel gebleven??
Gelukkig zijn er nog mensen, die zich verzetten tegen deze fascistoïde inhumane gang van zaken, zie het verslag verderop van een demonstratie, die afgelopen zaterdag werd gehouden…….

government has just been publicly shamed for deporting children to
war zones
On
Saturday 14 January, protesters rallied through Brixton, south
London. They were highlighting a government policy which is
seeing children deported to war zones. And the protesters called out
the government over what they describe as
“modern-day slave ships”.
Secret
flights and Skype calls
The
‘Movement For Justice By Any Means Necessary’ (MFJ)
was highlighting the government policy of
forcibly deporting foreign nationals, migrants, refugees, and
asylum seekers using secret charter flights. By and large, the
policy is not new. And as The
Canaryreported on
12 January, the UK government is also deporting children back to
Afghanistan. A country the UN has described as
“one of the most dangerous, and most violent, crisis ridden
countries in the world”. But what is new about the government
policy is who the law surrounding it applies to.
Historically,
the law stated that the government had the power to deport foreign
nationals who had criminal records. This was also the case if the
Home Secretary thought deporting these people was ‘conducive
to the public good’. This applied regardless of how long
people had been living in the UK, and even whether they had
the right of residency here. Additionally, no appeal to the
government could be made until the person was in the country they had
been deported to. For example, in September
2016 openDemocracyreported on
the case of ‘James’. The government forcibly deported him on a
secret charter flight to Jamaica:
“James
was just four years old when he arrived in the UK. Now he is 30 and
father to three British children. In 2012 he was convicted of money
laundering and served two years in prison… Though James’s partner
and his children are British, the Home Office can still… [deport]
him from the UK. The Home Office advises people in this situation to
conduct their family relationships ‘…by telephone, email or…
Skype”.
One
size fits all
But
the Conservatives’ Immigration
Act 2016 changed
all of this. The law now states that
the so-called ‘deport first, appeal later’ clause applies to all
migrants who make an asylum or refugee claim. Including children. The
MFJ says the government operates charter flights to Nigeria, Ghana,
Pakistan, Jamaica and Afghanistan every two months. And figures
released by Corporate
Watch show
that, in 2015, the government deported 5,729 foreign national
offenders. But it also deported 12,111 people that year who had not
committed a crime.
To
stop the government deporting them, people have to prove that
it would cause “serious irreversible harm”. But as charity Unity
Centre says:
“The
burden of proof is of course on the appellant to prove that removal
would cause serious irreversible harm. No mean feat for appellants
who, in Unity’s experience are often without legal representation
and always detained”
Essentially,
the government can now deport anyone who makes an asylum or refugee
claim in the UK without recourse. But it is the government’s entire
‘deport first, appeal later’ policy that the MFJ was protesting
about.

the MFJ. Protesters were carrying banners, megaphones, whistles and
klaxons:

march went through much of Brixton’s main shopping centre.
Protesters were chanting “When the Home Office attacks, we fight
back!”:
They
were stopping and speaking to the public, and handing out leaflets.
The response to the MFJ from passers-by was overwhelmingly
supportive, with many saying they had direct experience of the
government’s policy. The march then

Divisive government policies
The
demonstration, the third in a fortnight of
direct action, passed off peacefully. But it was noticeable that,
even when protesters were blocking the roads, there was no police
presence on the march. In a statement, the MFJ said:
“The
government’s charter flights deport people who have built lives in
the UK; been here most of their lives; have parents, partners and
children here; students who have not finished their courses; people
with serious health problems and others who are carers to elderly and
disabled relatives. This is an over-reaching, racist policy hitting
individuals and families that never thought they had an ‘immigration
problem”.
By
applying this policy to anyone needing asylum or refugee status, the
government is attacking people fleeing from some of the most
dangerous places on Earth. And as the MFJ says, this feeds into the
“false argument” that immigrants are the cause of all the
problems in the UK. It is essential that society calls out racism of
any kind. Wherever it appears. And that includes divisive, cynical
government policies.

RT houdt zich duidelijk niet aan de stilzwijgende afspraak binnen de reguliere (massa-) media (voor het overgrote deel in handen van grote bedrijven en/of miljardairs), de uiterst agressieve VS buitenlandpolitiek te verdedigen en het overheersende ijskoude, inhumane neoliberalisme uit te dragen.
Zoals betoogd, in onderstaand artikel: RT brengt geen onversneden Russische propaganda, als RT dit wel zou doen, zouden er bij lange na niet zoveel mensen zijn, die deze zender volgen. RT brengt feitelijk nieuws en zoals eerder op deze plek betoogd, ik heb RT tot nu toe niet kunnen betrappen op het brengen van ‘nepnieuws’, zoals de reguliere westerse media organen deze keer op keer brengen, neem de smerige berichtgeving over Oost-Aleppo…….
Nieuwsorganen als RT brengen hoop voor de honderden miljoenen mensen, die wereldwijd middels oorlogen en keihard neoliberalisme tot de verstotenen op ons aller aarde zijn gaan behoren….. has given a voice to patriotic Americans who have been isolated from
events in their own political system due to an establishment that
relied on mainstream media to shut them up.

Clapper, the US Director of National Intelligence, on the basis of
his comments
to the Senate committee on Thursday about RT,
would appear to agree with Alex Jones in thinking ‘there’s a war
on for your mind’.
I happen to disagree. I think there’s a race to the bottom, in order to see how much the American deep state and Congressional supporters of Obama’s neo-liberal ideology can condescend to ordinary Americans.
The truth behind the ‘media wars’ is far less exotic, let alone dramatic than the powers that be would like people to believe.
In business there is something known as the 80/20 Rule which states that 80% of all effects stem from 20% of all causal occurrences. When applied to retail it can mean that 80% of all revenue comes from 20% of one’s customer base. It can also mean that 80% of sales are derived from 20% of one’s inventory.
In media, one can apply this rule in the following ways: 80% of a media outlet’s viewership comes from 20% of a population who broadly agree with the editorial line of the outlet in question. Indeed, most viewers of media tune in and turn on to hear recent facts (and in some cases fake facts) which help to bolster their inherent views of the world. Clinton voters will watch CNN for reassurance, anti-Zionists will do with same with Press-TV, and neo-liberal globalists will put on BBC World.
RT isn’t an exception here. If someone broadly questions the globalist agenda and the militarist/interventionist narrative of the west, he or she will find many analysts on RT whose views correspond with their own.
There is however one big league exception. Prior to the launch of RT, there was no large media outlet broadcasting in the West which offered a critical view of the mainstream, establishment narrative. Whilst CNN and Fox bickered over hair-splitting interpretations of the ‘West is best’ agenda, no one offered a real opposing view.
RT has changed that. RT doesn’t have an anti-America view as Mr. Clapper implied. RT simply offers people in America and around the world an opportunity to question whether the establishment’s view of how America should rule the world actually makes the lives of ordinary Americans better or worse.
Increasingly those who feel that globalism, neo-liberalism and constant war are making their lives worse do things like watch RT and vote for Donald Trump. It is not a cause, it is an effect.
Few media outlets change minds but they do have the ability to give a voice to those which already exist. Globalists, liberals and war-hawks have had a voice in the American media market for decades. But unless one went to a local book-club where Pat Buchannan was giving a talk to a room of 80 people those opposed to the post-Cold War globalist hegemony of the US elite had no voice. RT has given them one, and the open contempt of those in the establishment, upset with RT for giving a voice to the voiceless, is staggering.
The tale told by the likes of Clapper and John Kerry before him isn’t one of a propaganda war. Ordinary people are not as stupid as many in the establishment would like to think. If RT was as propagandistic as they say, no one would watch it. Instead millions do watch it, some for reassurance and others to find out new perspectives so they can ‘question more’.
Perhaps many in the establishment are as shocked that they have as much patriotic American opposition as they have. The millions of Americans who watch RT however aren’t semi-retired KGB agents; they are patriotic, thinking, concerned Americans, many of whom are middle-aged and remember the Cold War well.

Quietly Signs The “Countering Disinformation And Propaganda Act”
Into Law
Late
on Friday, with the US population embracing the upcoming holidays and
oblivious of most news emerging from the administration, Obama
quietly signed into law the 2017 National
Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) which authorizes $611 billion for
the military in 2017.
Today,
I have signed into law S. 2943, the “National Defense Authorization
Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2017.” This Act authorizes fiscal year 2017
appropriations principally for the Department of Defense and for
Department of Energy national security programs, provides vital
benefits for military personnel and their families, and includes
authorities to facilitate ongoing operations around the globe. It
continues many critical authorizations necessary to ensure that we
are able to sustain our momentum in countering the threat posed by
the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and to reassure our European
allies, as well as many new authorizations that, among other things,
provide the Departments of Defense and Energy more flexibility in
countering cyber-attacks and our adversaries’ use of unmanned
aerial vehicles.”
Much
of the balance of Obama’s statement blamed the GOP for Guantanamo’s
continued operation and warned that “unless the Congress changes
course, it will be judged harshly by history,” Obama said. Obama
also said Congress failed to use the bill to reduce wasteful overhead
(like perhaps massive F-35 cost overruns?) or modernize military
health care, which he said would exacerbate budget pressures facing
the military in the years ahead.
But
while the passage of the NDAA – and the funding of the US military –
was hardly a surprise, the biggest news is what was buried deep
inside the provisions of the Defense Authortization Act.
Recall
that as we
reported in early June, “a
bill to implement the U.S.’ very own de
facto Ministry
of Truth had been quietly introduced in Congress.
As with any legislation attempting to dodge the public spotlight the
Countering Foreign Propaganda and Disinformation Act of 2016 marks a
further curtailment of press freedom and another avenue to stultify
avenues of accurate information. Introduced by Congressmen Adam
Kinzinger and Ted Lieu, H.R. 5181 seeks a “whole-government
approach without the bureaucratic restrictions” to counter “foreign
disinformation and manipulation,” which they believe threaten the
world’s “security and stability.”
Also
called the Countering Information Warfare Act of 2016 (S. 2692), when
introduced in March by Sen. Rob Portman, the legislation represents a
dramatic return to Cold War-era government propaganda battles. “These
countries spend vast sums of money on advanced broadcast and digital
media capabilities, targeted campaigns, funding of foreign political
movements, and other efforts to influence key audiences and
populations,” Portman explained, adding that while the U.S. spends
a relatively small amount on its Voice of America (VOA), the Kremlin
provides enormous funding for its news organization, RT.
“Surprisingly,”
Portman continued, “there is currently no single U.S. governmental
agency or department charged with the national level development,
integration and synchronization of whole-of-government strategies to
counter foreign propaganda and disinformation.”
Long
before the “fake news” meme became a daily topic of
extensive conversation on such discredited mainstream portals as CNN
and WaPo (Washington Post), H.R. 5181 would task the Secretary of State with
coordinating the Secretary of Defense, the Director of National
Intelligence, and the Broadcasting Board of Governors to “establish
a Center for Information Analysis and Response,” which will
pinpoint sources of disinformation, analyze data, and — in true
dystopic manner — ‘develop and disseminate’ “fact-based
narratives”
to counter effrontery propaganda.
In
short, long before “fake news” became a major media topic,
the US government was already planning its legally-backed crackdown
on anything it would eventually label “fake news.”

8, when
the “Countering
Disinformation and Propaganda Act”
passed in the Senate, quietly
inserted inside the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)
Conference Report.
And
now, following Friday’s Obama signing of the NDAA on Friday

Countering Disinformation and Propaganda Act is
now law.

U.S.
Senators Rob Portman (R-OH) and Chris Murphy (D-CT) today announced
that their Countering
Disinformation and Propaganda Act – legislation
designed to help American allies counter foreign government
propaganda from Russia, China, and other nations – has
been signed into law as part of the FY 2017 National Defense
Authorization Act (NDAA) Conference Report. The bipartisan bill,
which was introduced by
Senators Portman and Murphy in March, will improve the ability of the
United States to counter foreign propaganda and disinformation from
our enemies by establishing an interagency center housed at the State
Department to coordinate and synchronize counter-propaganda efforts
throughout the U.S. government. To support these efforts, the bill
also creates a grant program for NGOs, think tanks, civil society and
other experts outside government who are engaged in
counter-propaganda related work. This will better leverage existing
expertise and empower our allies overseas to defend themselves from
foreign manipulation. It will also help foster a free and vibrant
press and civil society overseas, which is critical to ensuring our
allies have access to truthful information and inoculating people
against foreign propaganda campaigns.
“Our
enemies are using foreign propaganda and
disinformation against us and our allies, and so far the U.S.
government has been asleep at the wheel,” Portman said. “But
today, the United States has taken a critical step towards
confronting the extensive, and destabilizing, foreign propaganda and
disinformation operations being waged against us by our enemies
overseas. With
this bill now law, we are finally signaling that enough is enough;
the United States will no longer sit on the sidelines. We are going
to confront this threat head-on. I am confident that, with the help
of this bipartisan bill, the disinformation and propaganda used
against us, our allies, and our interests will fail.”
“The
use of propaganda to undermine democracy has hit a new low. But
now we are finally in a position to confront this threat head on and
get out the truth. By building up independent, objective journalism
in places like eastern Europe, we can start to fight back by exposing
these fake narratives and empowering local communities to protect
themselves,” said Murphy. “I’m proud that our bill was signed
into law, and I look forward to working with Senator Portman to make
sure these tools and new resources are effectively used to get out
the truth.”
NOTE: The
bipartisan Countering
Disinformation and Propaganda Act is
organized around two main priorities to help achieve the goal of
combatting the constantly evolving threat of foreign disinformation
from our enemies:
The
first priority is developing a whole-of-government strategy for
countering THE foreign propaganda and disinformation being wages
against us and our allies by our enemies.
The bill would increase the authority, resources, and mandate of the
Global Engagement Center to include state actors like Russia and
China as well as non-state actors. The Center will be led by the
State Department, but with the active senior level participation of
the Department of Defense, USAID, the Broadcasting Board of
Governors, the Intelligence Community, and other relevant agencies.
The Center will develop, integrate, and synchronize
whole-of-government initiatives to expose and counter foreign
disinformation operations by our enemies and proactively advance
fact-based narratives that support U.S. allies and interests.
Second, the legislation
seeks to leverage expertise from outside government to create more
adaptive and responsive U.S. strategy options. The legislation
establishes a fund to help train local journalists and provide
grants and contracts to NGOs, civil society organizations, think
tanks, private sector companies, media organizations, and other
experts outside the U.S. government with experience in identifying
and analyzing the latest trends in foreign government disinformation
techniques. This fund will complement and support the Center’s
role by integrating capabilities and expertise available outside the
U.S. government into the strategy-making process. It will also
empower a decentralized network of private sector experts and
integrate their expertise into the strategy-making process.

so, with the likes
of WaPo having already primed the general public to
equate “Russian Propaganda” with “fake news”
(despite admitting after
the fact their own report was essentially “fake“),
while the US media has indoctrinated the public to assume that any
information which is not in compliance with the official government
narrative, or dares to criticize the establishment, is also “fake
news” and thus falls under the “Russian propaganda”
umbrella, the scene is now set for the US government to legally crack
down on every media outlet that the government deems to be “foreign
propaganda.”
Just
like that, the US Ministry

Shell is zelf gestopt met het boren in Arctisch gebied, daar dit veel te duur was (zonder gegarandeerde subsidie)……..
Nog ‘een mooi deel’ van Obama’s erfenis: het toestaan van fracken t.b.v. schalie-olie en -gaswinning. Miljarden liters zwaar vervuild water zijn intussen weggevloeid in rivieren en de Stille Oceaan, zonder dat daar zelfs maar voor betaald behoefde te worden (ook al een vorm van subsidie….)….. Miljarden liters grondwater zijn intussen vervuild door het Fracken en grote gebieden zijn in feite onbewoonbaar geworden door het fracken, dat bovendien een desolaat landschap met een berg ‘kraters’ achterlaat……….
Het volgende deel van de erfenis zit bijna in het verlengde van het vorige: de Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL), dwars door heilig gebied voor het oorspronkelijke volk van dat gebied, de Sioux…….. Hele veldslagen hebben er intussen plaatsgevonden, nadat de politie, andere ordetroepen en rednecks keihard tekeer gingen tegen vreedzame demonstranten……..

wegblijven en inheemse volkeren kunnen rustiger ademhalen. Zonder jou

Gisteren was het 36 jaar geleden dat John Lennon werd vermoord en zoals dit bij meerdere vooraanstaande personen in de VS het geval was, ook bij deze moord zijn grote vraagtekens te stellen.
Lennon was een groot denker, daar zal niemand met een gezond verstand nog aan twijfelen. Terecht stelt o.a.John W. Whitehead op Information Clearing House, dat de strijd die John Lennon tegen de instituties voerde, nog steeds actueel is en misschien wel meer actueel dan ooit tevoren…….

to the People: John Lennon’s Legacy Lives On

Mass
movements with huge numbers of participants work.
Yes,
America, it is possible to use occupations and civil disobedience to
oppose government policies, counter injustice and bring about change
outside the confines of the ballot box.
It
has been done before. It is being done now. It can be done again.
For
example, in May of 1932, more than 43,000 people, dubbed the Bonus
Army—World War I veterans and their families—marched on
Washington. Out of work, destitute and with families to feed, more
than 10,000 veterans set up tent cities in the nation’s capital and
refused to leave until the government agreed to pay the bonuses they
had been promised as a reward for their services.
The
Senate voted against paying them immediately, but the protesters
didn’t budge. Congress adjourned for the summer, and still the
protesters remained encamped. Finally, on July 28, under orders from
President Herbert Hoover, the military descended with tanks and
cavalry and drove the protesters out, setting their makeshift camps
on fire. Still, the protesters returned the following year, and
eventually their efforts not only succeeded in securing payment of
the bonuses but contributed to the passage of the G.I. Bill of
Rights.
Similarly, the Civil Rights Movement mobilized hundreds of thousands
of people to strike at the core of an unjust and discriminatory
society. Likewise, while the 1960s anti-war movement began with a few
thousand perceived radicals, it ended with hundreds of thousands of
protesters, spanning all walks of life, demanding the end of American
military aggression abroad.
This
kind of “power to the people” activism—grassroots, populist and
potent—is exactly the brand of civic engagement John Lennon
advocated throughout his career as a musician and anti-war activist.
It’s
been 36 years since Lennon was gunned
down by an assassin’s bullet on December 8, 1980, but his
legacy and the lessons he imparted in his music and his activism have
not diminished over the years.
All
of the many complaints we have about government today—surveillance,
militarism, corruption, harassment, SWAT team raids, political
persecution, spying, overcriminalization, etc.—were present in
Lennon’s day and formed the basis of his call for social justice,
peace and a populist revolution.
Little
wonder, then, that the U.S. government saw him as enemy number one.
Because
he never refrained from speaking truth to power, Lennon became a
prime example of the lengths to which the U.S. government will go to
persecute those who dare to challenge its authority.
Lennon
was the subject of a four-year campaign of surveillance and
harassment by the U.S. government (spearheaded by FBI Director J.
Edgar Hoover), an attempt by President Richard Nixon to have him
“neutralized” and deported. As Adam Cohen of the New
York Times points
out, “The F.B.I.’s surveillance of
Years
after Lennon’s assassination, it would be revealed that the FBI had
collected 281 pages
of surveillance files on him. As the New
York Timesnotes,
“Critics of today’s domestic surveillance object largely on
privacy grounds. They have focused far less on how easily government
surveillance can become an instrument for the people in power to try
to hold on to power. ‘The U.S. vs. John Lennon’ … is the story
not only of one man being harassed, but of a democracy being
undermined.”
Such
government-directed harassment was nothing new.
The
FBI has had a long history of persecuting, prosecuting and generally
harassing activists, politicians, and cultural figures, most notably
among the latter such celebrated
names as folk singer Pete Seeger, painter Pablo Picasso,
comic actor and filmmaker Charlie Chaplin, comedian Lenny Bruce and
poet Allen Ginsberg. Among those most closely watched by the FBI was
Martin Luther King Jr., a man labeled by the FBI as “the most
dangerous and effective Negro leader in the country.”
In
Lennon’s case, the ex-Beatle had learned early on that rock music
could serve a political end by proclaiming a radical message. More
importantly, Lennon saw that his music could mobilize the public and
help to bring about change.
For
instance, in 1971 at a concert in Ann Arbor, Mich., Lennon took to
the stage and in his usual confrontational style belted out “John
Sinclair,” a song he had written about a man sentenced to 10
years in prison for possessing two marijuana cigarettes. Within
days of Lennon’s call for action, the Michigan Supreme Court
ordered Sinclair released.
While
Lennon believed in the power of the people, he also understood the
danger of a power-hungry government. “The trouble with government
as it is, is that it doesn’t represent the people,” observed
Lennon. “It
controls them.”
By
March 1971, when his “Power to the People” single was released,
it was clear where Lennon stood. Having moved to New York City that
same year, Lennon was ready to participate in political activism
against the U. S. government, the “monster” that was financing
the war in Vietnam.
The
release of Lennon’s Sometime
in New York City album,
which contained a radical anti-government message in virtually every
song and depicted President Richard Nixon and Chinese Chairman Mao
Tse-tung dancing together nude on the cover, only fanned the flames
of the conflict to come.
However,
the official U.S. war against Lennon began in earnest in 1972 after
rumors surfaced that Lennon planned to embark on a U.S. concert tour
that would combine rock music with antiwar organizing and voter
registration. Nixon, fearing Lennon’s influence on about 11 million
new voters (1972 was the first year that 18-year-olds could vote),
had the ex-Beatle served with deportation orders “in an effort
to silence him as a voice of the peace movement.”
As
Lennon’s FBI file shows, memos and reports about the FBI’s
surveillance of the anti-war activist had been flying back and forth
between Hoover, the Nixon White House, various senators, the FBI and
the U.S. Immigration Office.
Nixon’s
pursuit of Lennon was relentless and misplaced.
Despite
the fact that Lennon was not plotting to bring down the Nixon
Administration, as the government feared, the government persisted in
its efforts to have him deported. Equally determined to resist,
Lennon dug in and fought back. Every time he was ordered out of the
country, his lawyers delayed the process by filing an appeal.
Finally,
in 1976, Lennon won the battle to stay in the country and by 1980, he
had re-emerged with a new album and plans to become politically
active again. The old radical was back and ready to cause trouble.
Unfortunately,
Lennon’s time as a troublemaker was short-lived.
As
Lennon stepped outside the car to greet the fans congregating
outside, Chapman, in an eerie echo of the FBI’s moniker for Lennon,
called out, “Mr. Lennon!”
Lennon
turned and was met with a barrage of gunfire as Chapman—dropping
into a two-handed combat stance—emptied his .38-caliber pistol and
pumped four hollow-point bullets into his back and left arm. Lennon
stumbled, staggered forward and, with blood pouring from his mouth
and chest, collapsed to the ground.
John
Lennon was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
Much
like Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, Malcolm X, Robert
Kennedy and others who have died attempting to challenge the
powers-that-be, Lennon had finally been “neutralized.”
Still,
you can’t murder a movement with a bullet and a madman: Lennon’s
legacy lives on in his words, his music and his efforts to speak
truth to power.
As
Yoko Ono shared in a 2014 letter to the parole board tasked with
determining whether Chapman should be released: “A man of humble
origin, [John Lennon] brought light and hope to the whole world with
his words and music. He tried to be a good
power for the world, and he was. He gave encouragement,
inspiration and dreams to people regardless of their race, creed and
gender.”
Lennon’s
work to change the world for the better is far from done.
Peace
remains out of reach. Activism and whistleblowers continue to be
prosecuted for challenging the government’s authority. Militarism
is on the rise, all the while the governmental war machine continues
to wreak havoc on innocent lives.
For
those of us who joined with John Lennon to imagine a world of peace,
it’s getting harder to reconcile that dream with the reality of the
American police state. And as I point out in my book Battlefield
America: The War on the American People,
those who do dare to speak up are labeled dissidents, troublemakers,
terrorists, lunatics, or mentally ill and tagged for surveillance,
censorship or, worse, involuntary detention.
As
Lennon shared in a 1968 interview:
I
think all our society is run by insane people for insane objectives…
I think we’re being run by maniacs for maniacal means. If anybody
can put on paper what our government and the American government and
the Russian… Chinese… what they are actually trying to do, and
what they think they’re doing, I’d be very pleased to know what
they think they’re doing. I think they’re all insane. But I’m
liable to be put away as insane for expressing that. That’s
what’s insane about it.”
So
what’s the answer?
Lennon
had a multitude of suggestions.
“If
everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then
there’d be peace.”
“Produce
your own dream. If you want to save Peru, go save Peru. It’s quite
possible to do anything, but not to put it on the leaders….You have
to do it yourself.”
“Peace
