Iraq-Raping
Neocon Upset That People Keep Bringing Up The Iraq Thing

by
Caitlin
Johnstone

There’s
so much going on in US politics right now that it’s hard to know what
to write about. With all the shouting about the election,
impeachment,
Trump’s
bogus Palestine “deal”

and so many other important political issues competing for airtime
with Kobe Bryant’s death and coronavirus
fear
porn
,
it feels like we’re already at white noise information saturation,
and it’s not even February yet. Things are going to get a whole lot
noisier next month when the Democratic presidential primaries (and
all the establishment manipulations that will necessarily accompany
them) get underway, and
Julian
Assange’s extradition trial begins
.

One
of the many interesting developments that I can pluck out of this
cacophony to earn my keep here has been the hysterical response to
Bernie Sanders’ polling bump from the Bush-era neoconservatives
who’ve been rehabilitated by a
weird
new alliance

with the Democratic Party in the age of Trump. In just the last few
days we’ve seen a deluge of smear pieces against Sanders published in
mainstream news outlets by virulent “never-Trump” neocons
Bret
“Bedbug” Stephens
David
“Axis of Evil” Frum
Jennifer “John
McCain is too dovish
” Rubin, and
Max
“The Case for American Empire” Boot
.

Which
has turned out to be a good thing so far, for two reasons. Firstly it
has ripped off
the
mask of woke progressivism

that these neoconservative war whores slapped on their faces three
years ago to promote mass murder within the Democratic
establishment’s astroturf “Resistance” to Trump. Secondly
it has educated an entire new generation of young voters about the
evils of the Iraq invasion, and who helped facilitate it.

“You can trust me now,” I said, “precisely because I have changed my mind. Don’t trust anyone who hasn’t.”
⁰Which brings me to Bernie Sanders, who never seems to have changed his views about anything.

It
is always a good sign when a bunch of pundits who push for increased
military aggression at every opportunity are upset about the same
thing, but I’m going to single out Max Boot here because his Bernie
tantrum has been especially hilarious to watch.

In
an article for
The
Washington Post

titled “
Bernie
Sanders is ‘insanely consistent.’ That’s nothing to brag
about.
“,
Boot bizarrely decided to attack Sanders on the fact that he hasn’t
often had to admit that he’s been wrong about things.

“But
it is true that I’ve rethought my views on some important matters,
such as the Iraq War, and started speaking out on issues such global
warming, gun control and white privilege where reality conflicts with
conservative dogma,” Boot writes, adding that he can be trusted
now “precisely because I have changed my
mind. Don’t trust anyone who hasn’t.”

It
is fascinating that Boot should choose consistency as a line of
attack against Sanders, because he himself has been remarkably
consistent throughout his entire career. He’s just been consistent in
the other direction.

Promoting
fiendishly
aggressive interventionist agendas

everywhere from Iraq to Afghanistan to Libya to Syria to Iran to
Russia, the
former
PNAC member

Boot has been a leading narrative manager for some of the most
catastrophically disastrous military interventions in living memory.
He has not just promoted imperialist agendas which destroyed the
lives of untold millions of human beings, but has also consistently
promoted the pernicious underpinning philosophy of that imperialism
as in his 2001 masterpiece “
The
Case for American Empire
“.

And
that is the one and only reason Boot remains gainfully employed as a
famous and widely circulated mainstream foreign policy analyst. He
has no redeeming characteristics.

He
is not smart. He is not charming. He is never, ever right about
anything. He simply advocates for the deployment of expensive
military equipment consistently and reliably.

The
oligarchic media love that in a guy.

Me:
I was wrong and I admit it, but I learned from it. Bernie should too.
He’s been wrong about some stuff.

Bernie
Bro: You were wrong. Why should we listen to you?

Max
Boot (@MaxBoot)
January

Boot,
who has been
giddy
with excitement

that his fellow traveller John Bolton has entered his side of the
impeachment debate, wrapped up his unintentional self-parody by
cheerleading
Trump’s regime change interventionism

in Venezuela and the right-wing military coup in Bolivia. After its
publication he quickly
found
himself under fire

on Twitter by the Sanders campaign’s David Sirota, who rightly
criticized his forceful promotion of the Iraq invasion. Boot
responded by whining that the “Bernie Bro” should accept
his admission that Iraq was a mistake and forget about the whole
thing.

“Me:
I was wrong and I admit it, but I learned from it. Bernie should too.
He’s been wrong about some stuff. Bernie Bro: You were wrong. Why
should we listen to you?”, Boot
tweeted.

“LOL.
Exactly,” Jennifer Rubin
responded.

And
that just says so much about the coddled, insulated, completely
unchallenged life that these mass media pundits are accustomed to,
right there. To believe that you can help pave the way for a war that
kills a million people based on lies and then years later say

“Oh
yeah I made an oopsie with that one, I need a do-over” requires
an unbelievable amount of entitlement and privilege, let alone to be
able to self-righteously hold that admission up as some kind of
superior virtue that is worthy of praise and deference.

You
don’t get to help murder a million people and then act indignant when
people bring it up. That is not a thing. Your admission of wrongdoing
does not undo the wrong that you did, and only someone who has been
raised in a consequence-free environment their entire life could
possibly believe that it would.

@MaxBoot

About to go on @CNNTonight to discuss impeachment. http://wapo.st/313fSai

Striking that Trump lawyers pretend Bolton smoking-gun evidence doesn’t exist. And that so many GOP senators still argue that there’s no reason to hear from Bolton. The lack of GOP outrage is outrageous.

Hey
Max? If you ever get tired of being completely wrong about
everything, here’s a hot tip for you: maybe start with crossing off
the idea that murdering a bunch of people is an ideal solution to
every problem. Normal people don’t think that way. That’s why
you’re wrong more often than any normal person. It really is that
simple
.

Nobody
who promoted the unforgivable Iraq invasion should ever be listened
to about anything for as long as they live. They certainly should not
be elevated in prominent slots on mainstream news outlets. They
should not even be able to find employment anywhere more glamorous
than a McDonald’s.

It
is good that these people are exposing themselves, and it is good
that more people are learning about the Iraq invasion. Nothing has
ever been done to make right the unfathomable evils which were
inflicted upon our species by that one horrific act, let alone the
many other disastrous interventions which have been endorsed by Max
Boot.

Let’s
all hope for a sane world where mass military slaughter is seen for
what it is, and where war whores like Max Boot are seen for what they
are, and where both of these things fade into obsolescence forever.

That
Time John Bolton Said It’s Good to Lie About War

May
16, 2019 at 8:37 am

Written
by
Caitlin
Johnstone

(CJ Opinion) — Journalist
Whitney Webb recently
tweeted a
2010 video clip I’d never seen before featuring US National
Security Advisor John Bolton defending the use of deception in
advancing military agendas, which highlights something we should all
be paying attention to as Trump administration foreign policy
becomes
increasingly Boltonized
.

On
a December 2010 episode of Fox News’
Freedom
Watch
,
Bolton and the show’s host Andrew Napolitano were
debating
about recent WikiLeaks publications
,
and naturally the subject of government secrecy came up.

Now
I want to make the case for secrecy in government when it comes to
the conduct of national security affairs, and possibly for deception
where that’s appropriate,”
Bolton
said
.
“You know Winston Churchill said during World War Two that in
wartime truth is so important it should be surrounded by a bodyguard
of lies.”

Do
you really believe that?” asked an incredulous Napolitano.

Absolutely,”
Bolton replied.

You
would lie in order to preserve the truth?”

If
I had to say something I knew was false to protect American national
security, I would do it,” Bolton answered.

I
don’t think we’re often faced with that difficulty, but would I
lie about where the D-Day invasion was going to take place to deceive
the Germans, you’d better believe it,” Bolton continued.

Why
do people in the government think that the laws of society or the
rules don’t apply to

them?”
Napolitano asked.

Because
they are not dealing in the civil society we live in under the
Constitution,” Bolton replied. “They are dealing in the anarchic
environment internationally where different rules apply.”

But
you took an oath to uphold the Constitution, and the Constitution
mandates certain openness and certain fairness,” Napolitano
protested. “You’re willing to do away with that in order to
attain a temporary military goal?”

I
think as Justice Jackson said in a famous decision, the Constitution
is not a suicide pact,” Bolton said. “And I think defending the
United States from foreign threats does require actions that in a
normal business environment in the United States we would find
unprofessional. I don’t make any apology for it.”

So
that’s a thing. And it’s important for us to know it’s a thing
because of the way things are heating up in Iran right now, since
Bolton’s fingerprints
are
all over it
.

Bolton
has long been
calling
for war with Iran
 and
in a paid speech in July 2017
told
his

pro-egime
change MEK terror cult audience
 that
they would be celebrating the successful overthrow of the Iranian
government together before 2019. Now we’re seeing
threat
alarms being elevated
 and fearmongering
about Iranian missiles
 being
circulated, with reports being
leaked
to the press
 of
possible plans to send 120,000 US troops to the region.

This
is an environment that is ripe for deceptions of all sorts, and,
given what Bolton said on live television nearly a decade ago, we
would all do very well to remain very, very skeptical of any and all
news we hear about Iran going forward. If for example you hear that
within this environment of escalated tensions and military posturing
Iran or one of its “proxies” has attacked the United States in
some way, your immediate response should be one of intense skepticism
about what the mass media talking heads are telling you to believe.

Back
in 2012 at a forum for the Washington Institute Of Near East Policy (WINEP) think tank, the group’s Director of Research Patrick Clawson
openly
talked about the possibility of using a false flag
 to
provoke a war with Iran.

I
frankly think that crisis initiation is really tough, and it’s very
hard for me to see how the United States president can get us to war
with Iran,”
Clawson
began
.

(Can
I just pause here to note what a bizarre series of words that is?
“Get us to war with Iran?”

Get
us to the thing that every sane human being wants to avoid with every
fiber of their being? You want to “get us to” there? This is not
the kind of thing normal humans say. You only hear this kind of
insanity in the DC swamp where creatures like John Bolton have their
roots.)

Which
leads me to conclude that if in fact compromise is not coming, that
the traditional way that America gets to war is what would be best
for US interests,” Clawson added. “Some people might think that
Mr. Roosevelt wanted to get us into the war… you may recall we had
to wait for Pearl Harbor. Some people might think that Mr. Wilson
wanted to get us into World War One; you may recall we had to wait
for the Lusitania episode. Some people might think that Mr. Johnson
wanted to get us into Vietnam; you may recall we had to wait for the
Gulf of Tonkin episode. We didn’t go to war with Spain until the
USS Maine exploded. And may I point out that Mr. Lincoln did not feel
that he could call out the Army until Fort Sumter was attacked, which
is why he ordered the commander at Fort Sumter to do exactly that
thing which the South Carolinians said would cause an attack.”

So
if, in fact, the Iranians aren’t going to compromise, it would be
best if somebody else started the war,” Clawson continued. “One
can combine other means of pressure with sanctions. I mentioned that
explosion on August 17th. We could step up the pressure. I mean look
people, Iranian submarines periodically go down. Some day, one of
them might not come up. Who would know why? We can do a variety of
things, if we wish to increase the pressure (I’m not advocating
that) but I’m just suggesting that this is not an either/or
proposition — just sanctions have to succeed or other things.
We are in the game of using covert means against the Iranians.

We
could get nastier at that.”

“We Know Where Your Kids Live”: How John Bolton Once Threatened an International Official

“John Bolton is a bully,” said José Bustani, a retired Brazilian diplomat. “I don’t know how people can work for him.”

theintercept.com

So
these are ideas that have been in circulation for many years. That
gun is loaded and ready to fire.

Bolton
trussed up his 2010 confession using an example that most people
would agree with: that it was reasonable for the Allied forces
to
deliberately
deceive the Nazis
 about
the nature of the D-Day invasion. But we know John Bolton better than
that by now.

This PNAC
director
 and
architect of the Iraq war
once
threatened to murder a foreign official’s children
 because
his successful diplomatic efforts were putting a damper on the
manufacturing of consent for the Iraq invasion. He wasn’t defending
the use of deception in crucial military options used to halt tyrants
trying to take over the world, he was defending the use of deception
in the senseless wars of aggression that he has built his political
career on advancing.

Take
everything you hear about Iran with a planet-sized grain of salt,
dear reader, and everything you hear about Venezuela too while we’re
on the subject. There are skillful manipulators who are hell bent on
toppling the governments of those nations, and they have absolutely
no problem whatsoever with deceiving you in order to facilitate that.
And they don’t believe the rules apply to them.

(MPN) —
Soon after the social media “purge” of independent media sites
and pages this past October, a top neoconservative insider — Jamie
Fly —
was
caught
 stating
that the mass deletion of anti-establishment and anti-war pages on
Facebook and Twitter was “just the beginning” of a concerted
effort by the U.S. government and powerful corporations to silence
online dissent within the United States and beyond.

While
a few, relatively uneventful months in the online news sphere have
come and gone since Fly made this ominous warning, it appears that
the neoconservatives and other standard bearers of the
military-industrial complex and the U.S. oligarchy are now poised to
let loose their latest digital offensive against independent media
outlets that seek to expose wrongdoing in both the private and public
sectors.

As MintPress
News
 Editor-in-Chief
Mnar Muhawesh
recently
wrote
MintPress was
informed that it was under review by an organization called Newsguard
Technologies, which described itself to
MintPress as
simply a “news rating agency” and asked Muhawesh to comment on a
series of allegations, several of which were blatantly untrue.
However, further examination of this organization reveals that it is
funded by and deeply connected to the U.S. government,
neo-conservatives, and powerful monied interests, all of whom have
been working overtime since the 2016 election to silence dissent to
American forever-wars and corporate-led oligarchy.

More
troubling still, Newsguard — by virtue of its deep connections to
government and Silicon Valley — is lobbying to have its rankings of
news sites installed by default on computers in U.S.
public libraries, schools, and universities as well as on all
smartphones and computers sold in the United States.

In
other words, as Newsguard’s project advances, it will soon become
almost impossible to avoid this neocon-approved news site’s ranking
systems on any technological device sold in the United States. Worse
still, if its efforts to quash dissenting voices in the U.S. are
successful, Newsguard promises that its next move will be to take its
system global.

Red
light, green light . . .

Newsguard
has received considerable attention in the mainstream media of late,
having been the subject of a
slew
of articles
 in
the
Washington
Post, the Hill
the
Boston Globe, Politico, Bloomberg, Wired,
and
many others just over the past few months. Those articles portray
Newsguard as using “old-school journalism” to fight “fake news”
through its reliance on nine criteria allegedly intended to separate
the wheat from the chaff when it comes to online news.

Newsguard
separates sites it deems worthy and sites it considers unreliable by
using a color-coded rating — green, yellow, or red — and more
detailed “nutrition labels” regarding a site’s credibility or
lack thereof. Rankings are created by Newsguard’s team of “trained
analysts.” The color-coding system may remind some readers of the
color-coded terror threat-level warning system that was created after
9/11, making it worth noting that Tom Ridge, the former secretary of
Homeland Security (DHS) who oversaw the implementation of that system under
George W. Bush, is on Newsguard’s
advisory
board
.

As
Newsguard releases a new rating of a site, that rating automatically
spreads to all computers that have installed its news ranking browser
plug-in. That plug-in is currently available for free for the most
commonly used internet browsers. NewsGuard directly markets the
browser plug-in to libraries, schools and internet users in general.

According
to
its
website
,
Newsguard has rated more than 2,000 news and information sites.
However, it plans to take its ranking efforts much farther
by
eventually
reviewing
 “the
7,500 most-read news and information websites in the U.S.—about 98
percent of news and information people read and share online” in
the United States in English.

recent
Gallup study,
 which
was supported and funded by Newsguard as well as the Knight
Foundation (itself a major investor in Newsguard), stated that a
green rating increased users likelihood to share and read content
while a red rating decreased that likelihood. Specifically, it found
63 percent would be less likely to share news stories from red-rated
websites, and 56 percent would be more likely to share news from
green-rated websites, though the fact that Newsguard and one of its
top investors funded the poll makes it necessary to take these
findings with a grain of salt.

However,
some of the rankings Newsguard itself has publicized show that it is
manifestly uninterested in fighting “misinformation.” How else to
explain the fact that the
Washington
Post
 and CNN both
received high scores even though both have written stories or made
statements that later proved to be entirely false? For example,
CNN
falsely
claimed
 in
2016 that it was illegal for Americans to read WikiLeaks releases and
illegally colluded with the DNC to craft presidential debate
questions.

In
addition, in 2017, CNN published
a
fake story
 that
a Russian bank linked to a close ally of President Donald Trump was
under Senate investigation. That same year, CNN was forced to retract
a report that the Trump campaign had been tipped off early about
WikiLeaks documents damaging to Hillary Clinton when it later learned
the alert was about material already publicly available.

The Washington
Post
,
whose $600 million
conflict
of interest with the CIA
 goes
unnoted by Newsguard, has also published false stories since the 2016
election, including
one
article
 that
falsely claimed that “Russian hackers” had tapped into Vermont’s
electrical grid. It was later found that the grid itself was never
breached and the “hack” was only an isolated laptop with a minor
malware problem. Yet, such acts of journalistic malpractice are
apparently of little concern to Newsguard when those committing such
acts are big-name corporate media outlets.

Furthermore,
Newsguard gives a high rating to
Voice
of America
,
the U.S. state-funded media outlet, even though its former acting
associate director
said that
the outlet produces “fluff journalism” and despite the fact that
it was recently reformed to “provide news that supports our [U.S.]
national security objectives.” However,
RT receives
a low “red” rating
 for
being funded by the Russian government and for “raising doubts
about other countries and their institutions” (i.e., including
reporting critical of the institutions and governments of the U.S.
and its allies).

Keeping
the conversation safe for the corporatocracy

Newsguard describes
itself
 as
an organization dedicated to “restoring trust and accountability”
and using “journalism to fight false news, misinformation and
disinformation.” While it
repeatedly
claims
 on
its website that its employees “have no political axes to grind”
and “care deeply about reliable journalism’s pivotal role in
democracy,” a quick look at its co-founders, top funders and
advisory board make it clear that Newsguard is aimed at curbing
voices that hold the powerful — in both government and the private
sector — to account.

Newsguard
is the latest venture to result from the partnership between Steven
Brill and Louis Gordon Crovitz, who currently serve as co-CEOs of the
group. Brill is a long-time journalist — published
in
TIME and The
New Yorker
,
among others — who most recently founded the Yale Journalism
Initiative, which
aims
to encourage
 Yale
students who “aspire to contribute to democracy in the United
States and around the world” to become journalists at top U.S. and
international media organizations. He first teamed up with Crovitz in
2009
to
create
 Journalism
Online
,
which sought to make the online presence of top American newspapers
and other publishers profitable, and was also
the
CEO of the company
 that
partnered up with the TSA to offer “registered” travelers the
ability to move more quickly through airport security — for a
price, of course.

While
Brill’s past does not in itself raise red flags, Crovitz — his
partner in founding
Journalism
Online
,
then Press+, and now Newsguard — is the last person one would
expect to find promoting any legitimate effort to “restore trust
and accountability” in journalism. In the early 1980s.
Crovitz
held a
number of positions at Dow Jones and at the
Wall
Street Journal
,
eventually becoming executive vice president of the former and the
publisher of the latter before both were sold to Rupert Murdoch’s
News Corp in 2007. He is also a board member of
Business
Insider
,
which has received
over
$30 million
 from Washington
Post
 owner
Jeff Bezos in recent years.

In
addition to being a member of the Council on Foreign Relations,
Crovitz proudly notes in his bio,
available
on Newsguard’s website
,
that he has been an “editor or contributor to books published by
the American Enterprise Institute and Heritage Foundation.” Though
many
MintPress readers
are likely familiar with these two institutions, for those who are
not, it is worth pointing out that the American Enterprise Institute
(AEI) is one of the most influential neoconservative think tanks in
the country and its “scholars,” directors and fellows have
included neoconservative figures like Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Perle,
John Bolton and Frederick Kagan.

During
the George W. Bush administration, AEI was instrumental in promoting
the invasion and subsequent occupation of Iraq and has since
advocated for militaristic solutions to U.S. foreign policy
objectives and the expansion of the U.S.’ military empire as well
as the “War on Terror.”

During
the Bush years, AEI was also closely associated with the now defunct
and controversial neoconservative organization known as the Project
for a New American Century (PNAC), which presciently called, four
years before 9/11, for a “new Pearl Harbor” as needed to rally
support behind American military adventurism.

The
Heritage Foundation, like AEI, was also supportive of the war in Iraq
and has pushed for the expansion of the War on Terror and U.S.
missile defense and military empire. Its corporate donors over the
years have included Procter & Gamble, Chase Manhattan Bank, Dow
Chemical, and Exxon Mobil, among others.

Crovitz’s
associations with AEI and the Heritage Foundation, as well as his
ties to Wall Street and the upper echelons of corporate media, are
enough to make any thinking person question his commitment to being a
fair watchdog of “legitimate journalism.” Yet, beyond his
innumerable connections to neoconservatives and powerful monied
interest, Crovitz has
repeatedly
been accused
 of
inserting misinformation into his
Wall
Street Journal
 columns,
with groups like the Electronic Frontier Foundation accusing him of
repeatedly
getting his facts wrong

on NSA surveillance and other issues. Some of the blatant falsehoods
that have appeared in Crovitz’s work have never been corrected,
even when
his
own sources
called
him out
 for
misinformation.

For
example, in a
WSJ opinion
piece
that
was written by Crovitz in 2012, Crovitz was accused of making
“fantastically false claims” about the history of the internet by
the very people he had cited to support those claims.

As TechDirt wrote
at the time:

Almost
everyone he [Crovitz] sourced or credited to support his argument
that the internet was invented entirely privately at Xerox PARC and
when Vint Cerf helped create TCP/IP, has spoken out to say he’s
wrong. And that list includes both
 Vint
Cerf, himself,
 and Xerox.
Other sources, including Robert Taylor (who was there when the
internet was invented) and
 Michael
Hiltzik
,
have rejected Crovitz’s spinning of their own stories.”

The
oligarch team’s deep bench

While
Brill and Crovitz’s connections alone should be enough cause for
alarm, a cursory examination of Newsguard’s
advisory
board

makes it clear that Newsguard was created to serve the interests of
American oligarchy. Chief among Newsguard’s advisors are Tom Ridge,
the first Secretary of Homeland Security under George W. Bush and
Ret. General Michael Hayden, a former CIA director, a former NSA
director and principal at
the
Chertoff Group
,
a security consultancy seeking to “advise corporate clients and
governments, including foreign governments” on security matters
that was co-founded by former Homeland Security Secretary Michael
Chertoff, who also currently serves as the
board
chairman
 of
major weapons manufacturer BAE systems.

Another
Newsguard advisor of note is Richard Stengel, former editor
of
Time magazine,
a “
distinguished
fellow

at the Atlantic Council and Undersecretary of State for Public
Diplomacy under President Barack Obama. At a panel discussion hosted
last May by the Council on Foreign Relations, Stengel
described his
past position at the State Department as “
chief
propagandist

and also stated that he is “
not
against propaganda. Every country does it and they have to do it to
their own population and I don’t necessarily think it’s that
awful
.”

Other
Newsguard advisors include Don Baer, former White House
communications director and advisor to Bill Clinton and
current
chairman
 of
both PBS and the influential PR firm Burson Cohn & Wolfe as well
as Elise Jordan, former communications director for the National
Security Council and former speech-writer for Condoleezza Rice, as
well as the
widow of
slain journalist Michael Hastings — who was writing an exposé on
former CIA director John Brennan at the time of his suspicious death.

A
look at Newguard’s investors further illustrates the multifarious
connections between this organization and the American political and
corporate elite. While Brill and Crovitz themselves are the company’s
top investors, one of Newsguard’s
most
important investors
 is
the Publicis Groupe. Publicis is the
third
largest
 global
communications company in the world, with more than 80,000 employees
in over 100 countries and an annual revenue of over €9.6 billion
($10.98 billion) in 2017. It is no stranger to controversy, as one of
its subsidiaries,
Qorvis,
recently came under fire for
exploiting U.S.
veterans at the behest of the Saudi government and also helped the
Saudi government to “
whitewash
its human rights record and its genocidal war in Yemen after
receiving $6 million from the Gulf Kingdom in 2017.

Furthermore,
given its size and influence, it is unsurprising that the Publicis
Groupe counts many powerful corporations and governments among its
clientele. Some of its
top
clients
 in
2018 included pharmaceutical giants Eli Lilly, Merck, Pfizer and
Bayer/Monsanto as well as Starbucks, Procter & Gamble, McDonalds,
Kraft Heinz, Burger King, and the governments of Australia and Saudi
Arabia. Given its influential role in funding Newsguard, it is
reasonable to point out the potential conflict of interest posed by
the fact that sites that accurately report on Publicis’ powerful
clients — but generate bad publicity — could be targeted for such
reports in Newsguard’s ranking.

In
addition to the Publicis Groupe, another major investor in Newsguard
is the Blue Haven Initiative, which is the venture capital “impact
investment” fund of the
wealthy
Pritzker family
 —
one of the top 10 wealthiest families in the U.S., best known as the
owners of the Hyatt Hotel chain and for being the
second
largest
 financial
contributors to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.

Other
top investors include
John
McCarter
,
a long-time executive at U.S. government contractor Booz Allen
Hamilton, as well as
Thomas
Glocer
,
former CEO of Reuters and a member of the boards of pharmaceutical
giant Merck & Co., financial behemoth Morgan Stanley, and the
Council on Foreign Relations, as well as a member of the Atlantic
Council’s International Advisory Board.

Through
these investors, Newsguard managed to raise
$6
million
 to
begin its ranking efforts in March of 2018. Newsguard’s actual
revenues and financing, however, have not been disclosed despite the
fact that it requires the sites it ranks to disclose their funding.
In a display of pure hypocrisy, Newsguard’s United States
Securities and Exchange Commission
Form
D
 —
which was filed March 5, 2018 — states that the company “declined
to disclose” the size of its total revenue.

Why
give folks a choice?

While
even a quick glance at its advisory board alone would be enough for
many Americans to decline to install Newsguard’s browser extension
on their devices, the danger of Newsguard is the fact that it is
diligently working to make the adoption of its app
involuntary.
Indeed, if voluntary adoption of Newsguard’s app were the case,
there would likely be little cause for concern, given that its
website attracts barely more than
300
visits per month
 and
its social-media following is relatively small, with just over
2,000
Twitter
followers
 and
barely 500
Facebook
likes
 at
the time of this article’s publication.

To
illustrate its slip-it-under-the-radar strategy, Newsguard has gone
directly to state governments to push its browser extension onto
entire state public library systems, even though its website suggests
that individual public libraries are welcome to install the extension
if they so choose. The first state to install Newsguard on
all
of its public library computers
 across
its 51 branches was the state of Hawaii — which was the first to
partner with Newsguard’s “news literacy initiative,” just last
month.

@NewsGuardRating

Aloha, Hawaiian libraries! The state has added the NewsGuard extension to the computers patrons use in all its public libraries. Thanks to for sponsoring news literacy. http://bigislandnow.com/2018/12/17/libraries-join-newsguard-in-news-literacy-partnership/

10

11:49 PM – Dec 17, 2018

According
to
local
media
,
Newsguard “now works with library systems representing public
libraries across the country, and is also partnering with middle
schools, high schools, universities, and educational organizations to
support their news literacy efforts,” suggesting that these
Newsguard services targeting libraries and schools are soon to become
a compulsory component of the American library and education system,
despite Newsguard’s glaring conflicts of interest with massive
multinational corporations and powerful government power-brokers.

Notably,
Newsguard has a powerful partner that has allowed it to start finding
its way into public library and school computers throughout the
country. As part of its new “Defending Democracy” initiative,
Microsoft announced last August that it would be partnering with
Newsguard to actively market the company’s ranking app and other
services to libraries and schools throughout the country.
Microsoft’s
press
release
 regarding
the partnership states that Newsguard “will empower voters by
providing them with high-quality information about the integrity and
transparency of online news sites.”

Since
then, Microsoft has
now
added
 the
Newsguard app as a built-in feature of Microsoft Edge, its browser
for iOS and Android mobile devices, and is unlikely to stop there.
Indeed, as a
recent
report
 in
favor of Microsoft’s partnership with Newsguard noted, “we could
hope that this new partnership will allow Microsoft to add NewsGuard
to Edge on Windows 10 [operating system for computers] as well.”

Newsguard,
for its part, seems confident that its app will soon be added by
default to all mobile devices. On its website, the organization
notes
that
 “NewsGuard
will be available on mobile devices when the digital platforms such
as social media sites and search engines or mobile operating systems
add our ratings and Nutrition Labels directly.” This shows that
Newsguard isn’t expecting its rating systems to be offered as a
downloadable application for mobile devices but something that social
media sites like Facebook, search engines like Google, and mobile
device operating systems that are dominated by Apple and Google will
“directly” integrate into nearly every smartphone and tablet sold
in the United States.

Boston
Globe
 article
on Newsguard from this past October makes this plan even more clear.
The
Globe wrote at
the time:

Microsoft
has already agreed to make NewsGuard a built-in feature in future
products, and [Newsguard co-CEO] Brill said he’s in talks with
other online titans. The goal is to have NewsGuard running by default
on our computers and phones whenever we scan the Web for news.”

This
eventuality is made all the more likely given the fact that, in
addition to Microsoft, Newsguard is also closely connected to Google,
as Google has been a partner of the Publicis Groupe
since
2014
,
when the two massive companies joined Condé Nast to create a new
marketing service called La Maison that is “focused on producing
engaging content for marketers in the luxury space.” Given Google’s
power in the digital sphere as the dominant search engine, the
creator of the Android mobile operating system, and the owner of
YouTube, its partnership with Publicis means that Newsguard’s
rating system will soon see itself being promoted by yet another of
Silicon Valley’s most powerful companies.

Furthermore,
there is an effort underway to integrate Newsguard into social media
sites like Facebook and Twitter. Indeed, as Newsguard was launched,
co-CEO Brill stated that he
planned
to sell
 the
company’s ratings of news sites to Facebook and Twitter. Last
March, Brill told
CNN that
“We’re asking them [Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft and Google] to
pay a fraction of what they pay their P.R. people and their lobbyists
to talk about the problem.”

On
Wednesday, Gallup
 released
a poll
 that
will likely be used as a major selling point to social media giants.
The poll — funded by Newsguard and the Knight Foundation, which is
a top investor in Newsguard and has
recently
funded
 a
series of Gallup polls relating to online news — seems to have been
created with the intention of manufacturing consent for the
integration of Newsguard with top social media sites.

This
is because the promoted findings from the study are as follows:“89%
of users of social media sites and 83% overall want social media
sites and search engines to integrate NewsGuard ratings and reviews
into their news feeds and search results” and “69% would trust
social media and search companies more if they took the simple step
of including NewsGuard in their products.” However, a disclaimer at
the end of the poll states that the results, which were based on the
responses of 706 people each of whom received $2 to participate, “may
not be reflective of attitudes of the broader U.S adult population.”

With
trust at Facebook nose-diving and Facebook’s censorship of
independent media already well underway, the findings of this poll
could well be used to justify its integration into Facebook’s
platform. The connections of both Newsguard and Facebook to the
Atlantic Council make this seem a given.

Financial
censorship

Another
Newsguard service shows that this organization is also seeking to
harm independent media financially by targeting online revenue.
Through a service called
“Brandguard,” which
it describes as a “brand safety tool aimed at helping advertisers
keep their brands off of unreliable news and information sites while
giving them the assurance they need to support thousands of
Green-rated [i.e., Newsguard-approved] news and information sites,
big and small.”

At
the time the service was announced last November, Newsguard co-CEO
Brill stated that the company was “in discussions with the ad tech
firms, leading agencies, and major advertisers” eager to adopt a
blacklist of news sites deemed “unreliable” by Newsguard. This is
unsurprising given the leading role of the Publicis Groupe, one of
the world’s largest advertising and PR firms, has in funding
Newsguard. As a consequence, it seems likely that many, if not all,
of Publicis’ client companies will choose to adopt this blacklist
to help crush many of the news sites that are unafraid to hold them
accountable.

It
is also important to note here that Google’s connection to Publicis
and thus Newsguard could spell trouble for independent news pages
that rely on Google Adsense for some or all of their ad-based
revenue. Google Adsense has long been targeting sites
like
MintPress by
demonetizing articles for information or photographs it deemed
controversial, including
demonetizing
one article
 for
including a photo showing U.S. soldiers involved in torturing Iraqi
detainees at the infamous Abu Ghraib prison.

Since
then, Google — a U.S. military contractor — has repeatedly tried
to shutter ad access to
MintPress articles
that involve reporting that is critical of U.S. empire and military
expansion.
One
article
 that
has been repeatedly flagged by Google details how many
African-Americans have questioned whether the Women’s March has
aided or harmed the advancement of African-Americans in the United
States. Google has repeatedly claimed that the article, which was
written by African-American author and former
Washington
Post
 bureau
chief Jon Jeter, contains “dangerous content.”

Given
Google’s already established practice of targeting factual
reporting it deemed controversial through Adsense, Brandguard will
likely offer the tech giant just the excuse it needs to cut off sites
like MintPress, and other pages equally critical of
empire, altogether.

An
action plan for the genuine protection of journalism

Though
it is just getting started, Newsguard’s plan to insert its app into
every device and major social-media network is a threat to any news
site that regularly publishes information that rubs any of
Newsguard’s investors, partners or advisors the wrong way. Given
its plan to rank the English-language U.S. news sites that account
for 98 percent of U.S. digital news consumption, Newsguard’s agenda
is of the utmost concern to every independent media page active in
the United States and beyond — given Newsguard’s promise to take
its project global.

By
linking up with former CIA and NSA directors, Silicon Valley Giants,
and massive PR firms working for some of the most controversial
governments and corporations in the world, Newsguard has betrayed the
fact that it is not actually seeking to “restore trust and
accountability” in journalism, but to “restore trust and
accountability” in news outlets that protect the existing power
structure and help shield the corporate-led oligarchy and
military-industrial complex from criticism.

Not
only is it trying to tank the reputations of independent media
through its biased ranking system, Newsguard is also seeking to
attack these alternative voices financially and by slipping its
ranking system by default onto all computers and phones sold in the
U.S.

However,
Newsguard and it agenda of guarding the establishment from criticism
can be stopped. By supporting independent media and unplugging from
social media sites committed to censorship, like Facebook and
Twitter, we can strengthen the independent media community and keep
it afloat despite the unprecedented nature of these attacks on free
speech and watchdog journalism.

Beyond
that, a key way to keep Newsguard and those behind it on their toes
is to hold them to

account
by pointing out their clear conflicts of interest and hypocrisy and
by derailing the narrative they are carefully crafting that Newsguard
is “non-partisan,” “trustworthy,” and true guardians against
the scourge of “fake news.”

While
this report has sought to be a starting point for such work, anyone
concerned about Newsguard and its connections to the war machine and
corrupt corporations should feel encouraged to point out the
organization’s own conflicts of interests and shady connections via
its
Twitter and Facebook pages
and the
feedback
section
 on
Newsguard’s website. The best way to defeat this new tool of the
neocons is to put them on notice and to continue to expose Newsguard
as a guardian of empire, not a guardian of journalism.

(GP— This
October, Facebook and Twitter deleted the accounts of hundreds of
users, including many alternative media outlets maintained by
American users. Among those wiped out in the coordinated purge were
popular sites that scrutinized police brutality and U.S.
interventionism, like The Free Thought Project, Anti-Media, and Cop
Block, along with the pages of journalists like
Rachel
Blevins
.

Facebook claimed that
these pages had “broken our rules against spam and coordinated
inauthentic behavior.” However, sites like The Free Thought Project
were verified by Facebook and widely recognized as legitimate sources
of news and opinion. John Vibes, an independent reporter who
contributed to Free Thought,
accused Facebook
of “favoring mainstream sources and silencing alternative voices.”

In
comments published here for the first time, a neoconservative
Washington insider has apparently claimed a degree of credit for the
recent purge — and promised more takedowns in the near future.

Russia,
China, and other foreign states take advantage of our open political
system,” remarked Jamie Fly, a senior fellow and director of the
Asia program at the influential think tank the German Marshall Fund,
which is
funded
by the U.S. government and NATO
.
“They can invent stories that get repeated and spread through
different sites. So we are just starting to push back. Just this last
week Facebook began starting to take down sites. So this is just the
beginning.”

Fly
went on to complain that “all you need is an email” to set up a
Facebook or Twitter account, lamenting the sites’ accessibility to
members of the general public. He predicted a long struggle on a
global scale to fix the situation, and pointed out that to do so
would require constant vigilance.

Fly
made these stunning comments to Jeb Sprague, who is a visiting
faculty in sociology at the University of California-Santa Barbara
and co-author of this article. The two spoke during a lunch break at
conference
on Asian security
 organized
by the
Stiftung
Wissenschaft und Politik
 (SWP) in
Berlin, Germany.

In
the tweet below, Fly is the third person from the left who appears
seated at the table.

The
remarks by Fly — “we are just starting to push back” — seemed
to confirm the worst fears of the alternative online media community.
If he was to be believed, the latest purge was motivated by politics,
not spam prevention, and was driven by powerful interests hostile to
dissident views, particularly where American state violence is
concerned.

Jamie
Fly, Rise of a Neocon Cadre

Jamie
Fly is an influential foreign policy hardliner who has spent the last
year lobbying for the censorship of “fringe views” on social
media. Over the years, he has advocated for a military assault on
Iran, a
regime
change war
 on
Syria, and hiking military spending to unprecedented levels. He is
the embodiment of a neoconservative cadre.

Like
so many second-generation neocons, Fly
entered
government

by burrowing into mid-level positions in George W. Bush’s National
Security Council and Department of Defense.

In
2009, he was appointed director of the
Foreign
Policy Initiative

(FPI), a rebranded version of Bill Kristol’s Project for a New
American Century, or PNAC. The latter outfit was an umbrella group of
neoconservative activists that first made the case for an invasion of
Iraq as part of a wider project of regime change in countries that
resisted Washington’s sphere of influence.

By
2011, Fly was advancing the next phase in PNAC’s blueprint
by
clamoring for
military strikes on Iran. “More diplomacy is not an adequate
response,” he argued. A year later, Fly
urged the
US to “expand its list of targets beyond the [Iranian] nuclear
program to key command and control elements of the Republican Guard
and the intelligence ministry, and facilities associated with other
key government officials.”

Fly
soon found his way into the senate office of Marco Rubio, a
neoconservative pet project, assuming a role as his top foreign
policy advisor. Amongst other interventionist initiatives, Rubio has
taken the lead in promoting harsh economic sanctions
targeting
Venezuela
,
even advocating for a U.S.
military
assault
 on
the country. When Rubio’s 2016 presidential campaign floundered
amid a mass revolt of the Republican Party’s middle American base
against the party establishment, Fly was forced to cast about for new
opportunities.

He
found them in the paranoid atmosphere of
Russiagate that
formed soon after Donald Trump’s shock election victory.

PropOrNot
Sparks the Alternative Media Panic

A
journalistic insider’s account of the Hillary Clinton presidential
campaign, Shattered, revealed that “in the days after
the election, Hillary declined to take responsibility for her own
loss.” Her top advisers were summoned the following day, according
to the book, “to engineer the case that the election wasn’t
entirely on the up-and-up … Already, Russian hacking was the
centerpiece of the argument.”

Less
than three weeks after Clinton’s defeat, the Washington Post’s
Craig Timberg published a
dubiously
sourced report
 headlined,
“Russian propaganda effort helped spread ‘fake news.’” The
article hyped up a McCarthyite effort by a shadowy, anonymously run
organization called PropOrNot to blacklist some 200 American media
outlets as Russian “online propaganda.”

The
alternative media outfits on the
PropOrNot
blacklist
 included
some of those recently purged by Facebook and Twitter, such as The
Free Thought Project and Anti-Media. Among the
criteria
PropOrNot identified as signs of Russian propaganda were “Support
for policies like Brexit, and the breakup of the EU and Eurozone”
and “Opposition to Ukrainian resistance to Russia and Syrian
resistance to Assad.” PropOrNot called for “formal investigations
by the U.S. government” into the outlets it had blacklisted.

According
to Craig Timberg, the Washington Post correspondent who uncritically
promoted the media suppression initiative, Propornot was established
by “a nonpartisan collection of researchers with foreign policy,
military and technology backgrounds.” Timberg quoted a figure
associated with the George Washington University Center for Cyber and
Homeland Security, Andrew Weisburd, and cited a report he wrote with
his colleague, Clint Watts, on Russian meddling.

Timberg’s
piece on was PropOrNot was promoted widely by
former
top Clinton staffers
 and celebrated by
ex-Obama White House aide Dan Pfeiffer as “the biggest story in the
world.” But after a wave of stinging criticism, including in the
pages of the
New
Yorker
,
the article was amended with an editor’s note stating, “The
[Washington] Post… does not itself vouch for the validity of
PropOrNot’s findings regarding any individual media outlet.”

PropOrNot
had been seemingly exposed as a McCarthyite sham, but the concept
behind it — exposing online American media outlets as vehicles for
Kremlin “active measures” — continued to flourish.

The
Birth of the Russian Bot Tracker — with U.S. Government Money

By
August, a new, and seemingly related initiative appeared out of the
blue, this time with backing from a bipartisan coalition of
Democratic foreign policy hands and neocon Never

Trumpers
in Washington. Called the
Alliance
for Securing Democracy
 (ASD),
the outfit aimed to expose how supposed Russian Twitter bots were
infecting American political discourse with divisive narratives. It
featured a daily “
Hamilton
68

online dashboard that highlighted the supposed bot activity with
easily digestible charts. Conveniently, the site avoided naming any
of the digital Kremlin influence accounts it claimed to be tracking.

The
initiative was immediately
endorsed
by John Podesta
,
the founder of the Democratic Party think tank the Center for
American Progress, and former chief of staff of Hillary Clinton’s
2016 presidential campaign. Julia Ioffe, the Atlantic’s chief
Russiagate correspondent,
promoted the
bot tracker as “a very cool tool.”

Unlike
PropOrNot, the ASD was sponsored by one of the most respected think
tanks in Washington, the
German
Marshall Fund
,
which had been founded in 1972 to nurture the special relationship
between the US and what was then West Germany.

The
German Marshall Fund is substantially
funded
by Western governments
,
and largely reflects their foreign-policy interests. Its top two
financial sponsors, at more than $1 million per year each, are the
U.S. government’s soft-power arm the U.S. Agency for International
Development (
USAID)
and the German Foreign Office (known in German as the Auswärtiges
Amt). The U.S. State Department also provides more than half a
million dollars per year, as do the German Ministry of Economic
Cooperation and Development and the foreign affairs ministries of
Sweden and Norway. It likewise receives at least a quarter of a
million dollars per year from NATO.

The
US government and NATO are top donors to the German Marshall Fund.

Though
the German Marshall Fund did not name the donors that specifically
sponsored its Alliance for Securing Democracy initiative, it hosts a
who’s who of bipartisan national-security hardliners on the
ASD’s
advisory
council
,
providing the endeavor with the patina of credibility. They range
from neocon movement icon Bill Kristol to former Clinton foreign
policy advisor Jake Sullivan and ex-CIA director Michael Morell.

Jamie
Fly, a German Marshall Fund fellow and Asia specialist, emerged as
one of the most prolific promoters of the new Russian bot tracker in
the media. Together with Laura Rosenberger, a former foreign policy
aide to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign, Fly appeared in a series
of
interviews and
co-authored several
op-eds emphasizing
the need for a massive social media crackdown.

During
a March 2018
 interview
on C-Span
,
Fly complained that “Russian accounts” were “trying to promote
certain messages, amplify certain content, raise fringe views, pit
Americans against each other, and we need to deal with this ongoing
problem and find ways through the government, through tech companies,
through broader society to tackle this issue.”

Yet
few of the sites on PropOrNot’s blacklist, and none of the
alternative sites that were erased in the recent Facebook purge that
Fly and his colleagues take apparent credit for, were Russian
accounts. Perhaps the only infraction they could have been accused of
was publishing views that Fly and his cohorts saw as “fringe.”

What’s
more, the ASD has been forced to admit that the mass of Twitter
accounts it initially identified as “Russian bots” were not
necessarily bots — and may not have been Russian either.

I’m
Not Convinced on This Bot Thing”

A
November 2017
 investigation by
Max Blumenthal, a co-author of this article, found that the ASD’s
Hamilton 68 dashboard was the creation of “a collection of cranks,
counterterror retreads, online harassers and paranoiacs operating
with support from some of the most prominent figures operating within
the American national security apparatus.”

These
figures included the same George Washington University Center for
Cyber and Homeland Security fellows — Andrew Weisburd and Clint
Watts — that were cited as experts in the Washington Post’s
article promoting PropOrNot.

Weisburd,
who has been described as one of the brains behind the Hamilton 68
dashboard, once maintained a one-man, anti-Palestinian web monitoring
initiative that specialized in doxxing left-wing activists, Muslims
and anyone he considered “anti-American.” More recently, he has
taken to Twitter to spout off murderous and homophobic fantasies
about Glenn Greenwald, the editor of the Intercept — a publication
the ASD flagged without explanation as a vehicle for Russian
influence operations.

Watts,
for his part, has testified before Congress on several occasions
to
call on
the government to “quell information rebellions” with censorious
measures including “nutritional labels” for online media. He has
received fawning publicity from corporate media and been rewarded
with a contributor role for NBC on the basis of his supposed
expertise in ferreting out Russian disinformation.

However, under
questioning
 during
a public event by Grayzone contributor Ilias Stathatos, Watts
admitted that substantial parts of his testimony were false, and
refused to provide evidence to support some of his most colorful
claims about malicious Russian bot activity.

In
a separate interview with
Buzzfeed,
Watts appeared to completely disown the Hamilton 68 bot tracker as a
legitimate tool. “I’m not convinced on this bot thing,” Watts
confessed. He even called the narrative that he helped manufacture
“overdone,” and admitted that the accounts Hamilton 68 tracked
were not necessarily directed by Russian intelligence actors.

We
don’t even think they’re all commanded in Russia — at all. We
think some of them are legitimately passionate people that are just
really into promoting Russia,” Watts conceded.

But
these stunning admissions did little to slow the momentum of the
coming purge.

Enter
the Atlantic Council

In
his conversation with Sprague, the German Marshall Fund’s Fly
stated that he was working with the Atlantic Council in the campaign
to purge alternative media from social media platforms like Facebook.

The
Atlantic Council is another Washington-based think tank that serves
as a gathering point for neoconservatives and liberal
interventionists pushing military aggression around the globe. It
is
funded by
NATO and
repressive,
US-allied governments
 including
Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Turkey, as well as by Ukrainian oligarchs
like Victor Pynchuk.

This
May, Facebook
 announced a
partnership with the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research
Lab (DFRLab) to “identify, expose, and explain disinformation
during elections around the world.”

The
Atlantic Council’s DFRLab is notorious for its zealous
conflation of legitimate online dissent with illicit Russian
activity, embracing the same tactics as PropOrNot and the ASD.

Ben
Nimmo, a DFRLab fellow who has built his reputation on flushing out
online Kremlin influence networks,
embarked on
an embarrassing witch hunt this year that saw him misidentify several
living, breathing individuals as Russian bots or Kremlin “influence
accounts.” Nimmo’s victims included
Mariam
Susli
,
a well-known Syrian-Australian social media personality, the famed
Ukrainian concert pianist
Valentina
Lisitsa
,
and a British pensioner named Ian Shilling.

In
an interview with Sky News, Shilling delivered a
memorable
tirade
 against
his accusers. “I have no Kremlin contacts whatsoever; I do not know
any Russians, I have no contact with the Russian government or
anything to do with them,” he exclaimed. “I am an ordinary
British citizen who happens to do research on the current neocon wars
which are going on in Syria at this very moment.”

With
the latest Facebook and Twitter purges, ordinary citizens like
Shilling are being targeted in the open, and without apology. The
mass deletions of alternative media accounts illustrate how national
security hardliners from the German Marshall Fund and Atlantic
Council (and whoever was behind PropOrNot) have instrumentalized the
manufactured panic around Russian interference to generate public
support for a wider campaign of media censorship.

In
his conversation in Berlin with Sprague, Fly noted with apparent
approval that, “Trump is now pointing to Chinese interference in
the 2018 election.” As the mantra of foreign interference expands
to a new adversarial power, the clampdown on voices of dissent in
online media is almost certain to intensify.

As
Fly promised, “This is just the beginning.”

Over

If
Society Understood Sovereignty, It Would End Rape Culture,
Imperialism, And Propaganda

Power,
when you get right down to it, is ultimately about control. The
ability to control other human beings and decide what happens to
them. The more control you have over human lives, the more power you
have. Some exert totalitarian control over their spouse and their
children, and within their homes they are all-powerful. Some exert
control over entire groups of nations, and have the power of life and
death over entire populations. Those individuals are the most
powerful people in the world.

But
in order to have control over another person, you must necessarily
violate their personal sovereignty. You must find a way to get your
will to override their own will for their own lives in order to
control them, be it by physical force, legal compulsion,
psychological manipulation, or rape drugs. This is why
power-facilitating narratives advanced by governments, religions,
education/indoctrination systems, and mass media outlets have aways
explained to their audiences why it is in their best interest to
subvert their personal sovereignty over their lives, their bodies,
their reproductive systems, and their minds.

NEW YORK (AP) — National Security adviser Bolton: US troops not leaving Syria ‘as long as Iranian troops are outside Iranian borders’

President
Trump’s National Security Advisor John Bolton is a PNAC founder, a
lead architect of the Iraq invasion, and once
threatened
to murder a diplomat’s sons
 for
standing in the way of the rape of Iraq. He is the neocon’s neocon,
and his respect for both national and personal sovereignty is so
nonexistent that I would not be the slightest bit surprised to learn
that he has raped his wife or anyone else. Sovereignty is such a
non-thing in Bolton’s reality tunnel that
he
recently claimed
 that
Russia giving Syria air defense systems to defend its own airspace
“would be a significant escalation by the Russians,” and added
that US troops are going to remain in Syria “as long as Iranian
troops are outside Iranian borders, and that includes Iranian proxies
and militias.”

To
be clear, the US military is in Syria without the permission of the
Syrian government, while the Iranian military and its so-called
proxies are there at the invitation of the Syrian government to help
combat the terrorist forces which have overrun the nation with the
help of the US-centralized empire. Bolton is the kind of guy that
crashes your party uninvited, drinks all the punch and knocks over
the snack table, and when your boyfriend asks him to leave, he tells
you he’s not leaving until your boyfriend leaves first. That’s
essentially what he’s saying.

The
gall it takes to say that your military will continue illegally
occupying a sovereign nation for as long as its allies continue to do
the thing that allies do is such a grotesque perversion of the
concept of sovereignty that if more Americans had a better
understanding of that concept John Bolton would have caused national
outrage by saying it. But of course he didn’t, because they don’t.
It’s just assumed that America is entitled to decide what sovereign
nations do with their own allies, and that it is allowed to invade
and occupy their land to force them to comply.

US Mission to the UN
@USUN

”Iran treats Iraq like it’s not an independent nation. Iran sees Iraq as a transit point for weapons and a training ground for its proxies. Iran seeks to keep Iraq economically weak. Why? Because Iran wants to use a weak Iraq to illicitly fund its terrorist activities.” pic.twitter.com/yDtxIUIAed

Caitlin Johnstone@caitoz

The worst part was that time in 2003 when Iran invaded Iraq, killed a million people and destabilized the entire region, which they manufactured consent for by lying to the public about weapons of mass destruction. We all remember Iran doing that, right?https://twitter.com/USUN/status/1042911916442701824

Americans
accept this gross violation of sovereignty because they have been
propagandized to accept it
by
the mass media machine
 which
spends all day every day
manufacturing
support
 for
the agendas of those who control the most humans. But this is a
violation of Americans’ mental sovereignty, in exactly the same way
slipping a rape drug into a woman’s drink is a violation of her
sexual sovereignty. Just as Bill Cosby made it his life’s mission
to try and manufacture the illusion of sexual consent from women
using rape drugs, the most powerful people in the world have been
using the mass media to try and manufacture the illusion of consent
for their agendas of war, oppression and ecocide.

It
is not America’s place to tell Syria and Iran what they’re
allowed to do inside one another’s borders any more than it’s the
government’s place to tell a woman what she can and cannot do
inside her own body, whether that be having sex with whom she pleases
or having an abortion if she decides that’s in her best interest.
It is not the plutocrats’ place to slip manipulative narratives
into the minds of the masses any more than it was Bill Cosby’s
place to slip rape drugs into a woman’s drink. It is not America’s
place to invade a sovereign nation and occupy its land to force it to
obey its commands any more than it was Bill Cosby’s place to insert
his penis into a drugged woman.

Power
depends on systematic and relentless violations of sovereignty in
myriad forms around the world, which is why powerful people act like
such disgusting, rapey creeps all the time. In a healthy world, which
I firmly believe we can create, a deep understanding of sovereignty
in all its forms will replace this toxic dynamic in which the rapey
fingers of power are constantly inserting themselves into lives,
minds and nations in order to dominate and control them. In such a
society, everything from rape to imperialism to propaganda will stand
out like a black fly on a white sheet of paper and be expelled like a
pathogen by a healthy immune system.

Why
You Should Celebrate Loudly and Unapologetically When John McCain
Dies

Arizona
Senator and murderous psychopath John McCain is
rumored
to be at death’s door
,
and already the world is being admonished by high-profile empire
loyalists not to voice any criticism of his blood-saturated,
obnoxiously long career.

Anti-McCain
twitter seems to have reached new heights (or depths) of
repulsiveness,”
tweeted Iraq-raping
PNAC founder Bill Kristol to thunderous applause
from
#Resistance Twitter.
“In the hope that a few of the haters see this, let me say: I’m
proud to have voted for John McCain for president three times (2000 &
2008 primaries & 2008 general), and for Donald Trump…never.”

John
McCain reminds us that American greatness is made by those who
understand that character is the sum of one’s hardest choices; that
reality is not a TV show; that fame is mist but honor granite; that
heroes don’t need fixers on retainer,” the
Washington
Post
‘s
David Von Drehle
preemptively
eulogized
 in
a nauseating article titled “John McCain isn’t the ideal
messenger. He’s the ideal message.”

STFU,
Trumpites,”
scolded the
somewhat less subtle Matt Lewis of the
Daily
Beast
.
“John McCain is 50 times the person you’ll ever be.”

Other
commentators have had other ideas.

These
repressive decrees prohibiting criticisms of John McCain as he dies
are like those who insist gun control not be spoken of after mass
shootings,”
tweeted journalist
Glenn Greenwald. “Discussions of his life are inherently political.
If you’re going heap praise on & sanctify him, you can’t also
silence critics.”

Insisting
on the right to convert every US political leader into a heroic &
noble saint upon death, while condemning critics as gauche &
classless, is propaganda,” Greenwald
added.
“It’s easy to dismiss all the deaths McCain has caused because
they’re distant and invisible, but they still matter.”

I
would take it a few clicks further, personally. I say it is the duty
of everyone who opposes acts of mass military slaughter for power and
profit to cheer loudly and unapologetically when John McCain dies.

We
should all celebrate McCain’s death. Not in a spirit of vengeance
for the lives
his
relentless warmongering
 has
helped end. Nor because his death may save innocent lives, though
that possibility is surely an added perk. No, we should celebrate the
end of McCain’s despicable life first and foremost to prevent such
bloodthirsty depravity from being normalized, or worse, immortalized
as heroism.

Many
people will recoil from such a notion in horror, like
the
pearl-clutching ladies on
The
View
 did
 when
discussing my article “
Please
Just Fucking Die Already

which I wrote about McCain shortly before his cancer diagnosis. These
people are cowards. They have compartmentalized themselves away from
the horrors that McCain has helped inflict upon this world because it
is more psychologically comfortable than acknowledging that such a
pervasively evil presence has been working so intimately with the
nexus of power in their country.

If
everyone could be forced
Clockwork
Orange
-style
 to
look at all the death, destruction and suffering that John McCain has
helped inflict upon our species, they would feel nothing but relief
upon his departing from this world. It is only the aforementioned
power to dissociate and compartmentalize which enables people to spew
nonsense about McCain being a hero and a good man.

It
is this pocket of compartmentalization that we are being bullied into
by establishment loyalists who demand solemn reverence for this
unforgivable monster simply because his time here is almost up. They
are doing this because it benefits and protects them. The ability of
the servants of empire to proudly show their faces in public after
helping to ensure the deaths of countless thousands of human beings
is absolutely essential for the survival of the Orwellian oligarchy
which rules over us. If we could see these murderous beasts for what
they truly are, the illusion would be shattered and we’d never
consent to being ruled by a system which empowers them.

To
truly see John McCain for what he is and what he has done is to see
the face of the oppression machine that rank-and-file Americans have
been manipulated into supporting.

The
empire which spends medicine money on bombs overseas and insists on
an economic system that is propped up with the barrel of a gun
depends on keeping its most hands-on servants normalized and
celebrated.

Mainstream
Americans seeing McCain clearly will also be seeing themselves and
what they’ve been duped into consenting to. Rejecting this illusion
and pissing on McCain’s grave is a direct act of rebellion against
the oppressive, war profiteering oligarchs and their allied defense
and intelligence agencies.

The
reason the US-centralized war machine is able to get away with
unleashing unspeakable horror after unspeakable horror upon our world
is because that war machine has become normalized and celebrated. So
it is therefore our duty to call John McCain the wicked witch that he
is and celebrate like munchkins when he dies.

In
a healthy world, war-peddling neoconservatives like John McCain would
be treated with the same social stigma as child molesters and serial
killers. So let’s create that world.

Abnormalize
war. Abnormalize the campaigns of mass slaughter for power and profit
by the US-centralized war machine. Abnormalize the system which tries
to normalize John McCain.

Normalize
peace
.
Normalize an expectation that leaders will not advocate war at every
opportunity.

Normalize
an environment where someone seeking out opportunities to push for
war will be recoiled from in horror like the demonic freaks that they
are. Normalize a world with no John McCains.

Oppose
the calls of the social engineers for reverence and good behavior.
The war machine is not entitled to our politeness. McCain’s family
is not entitled to force the entire world to pretend that he wasn’t
an evil child-killing monster. We need to drag this abomination out
into the light where everyone can see it and call it what it is.

When
the time comes (hopefully sooner than later), join me in celebrating
John McCain’s death. Here’s to a world where such vile ghouls are
treated like what they are.

zagen. In september 2000 formuleerde de rechtse denktank PNAC
(Project for the New American Century) een aantal plannen waarin de

buitenlandbeleid, aldus Van Wolferen. En Obama laat het allemaal maar
gebeuren.

Valse
vlag-operaties

In
