onald
Trump’s latest insane excursion into US history has been to claim
that his great hero, Andrew Jackson, might have prevented the Civil
War.

Given
his racist, genocidal nature, our seventh president could only have
done that by giving up slavery in the South, spreading it into the
North or giving the Southwest back to Mexico.

Jackson,
of course, would never have given up slavery, which was the cause of
the war and the core of his fortune.

As
a young man, like a cowboy driving cattle, Jackson personally drove
slaves to market. He eventually owned more than a hundred of them,
and defended America’s “peculiar institution” at every
opportunity.

In
addition to their authoritarian temperaments, Jackson and Trump share
“accomplishments” such as trashing the Constitution, personally
profiting from the presidency, and inciting imperial conquest.
Jackson did stand for the Union against South Carolina’s threatened
secession, but that was about tariffs, not slavery.

Trump
rightly says Jackson was “tough.” In 1806, in one of his fourteen
duels, Jackson took a bullet an inch from his heart. He then killed
his opponent in a manner considered most unchivalrous, and became a
social outcast for many years. The bullet stayed in his chest until
his own death four decades later.

Jackson
was also a pioneer homophobe. As Sen. James Buchanan of Pennsylvania
openly lived with his likely lover, Sen. Rufus King of South
Carolina, Jackson loudly referred to him as “Aunt Nancy.” (After
King died, Buchanan became our only “bachelor president.”)

But
mainstream historians have made a hero of “Old Hickory.” Born to
dirt poor Irish immigrants who died early, Jackson’s hardscrabble
upbringing was the opposite of Trump’s.

Trump
inherited millions from his father, who was a Klan (Kukluksklan, of KKK, AP) sympathizer (or
member), a landlord so cruel that the legendary leftie folksinger
Woody Guthrie wrote a song denouncing him.

Andrew
Jackson pre-dated the Klan, but would’ve killed for an estate like
the one Trump inherited. And he did.

As
an orphan, Jackson began his military career at age 13. Rising
through the ranks as an Indian killer, he conquered the Chickasaw by
recruiting their ancient rivals, the Cherokee. Jackson then turned on
the Cherokee as if they had been the enemy. His racism was open,
lethal, and proud.

With
Trump-style “Common Man” rhetoric, Jackson promised to destroy
the National Bank. He then made insider deals with the smaller banks
that replaced it, enriching his backers and himself. These and other
scams helped buy him his 1000-acre slave plantation in Tennessee.

When
he conquered native land for the US, Jackson and his cronies somehow
wound up with the best parcels. His 1830 Indian Removal Act ordered
all eastern tribes to move west of the Mississippi.

The
Appalachian Cherokee had an advanced tribal government, an elected
leader (John Ross), a capitol, a written constitution, and much more.
Most lived in private homes and ran successful farms. Some (like
Ross) owned plantations and slaves. There were seven Cherokee lumber
mills.

The
Cherokee petitioned for statehood. Supreme Court Chief Justice John
Marshall ruled that the Constitution allowed no new state to be
created from existing ones (Abraham Lincoln dodged that technicality
in 1863 to form West Virginia).

But
Marshall also ruled that the Cherokee had sovereignty (a clause later
used to site casinos) and a Constitutional right to stay on their
ancestral lands.

Jackson
replied, Trump-style, that he would ignore the Court. Under Jackson’s
successor, Martin Van Buren, federal troops forced some 14,000
Cherokee out of their homes at gunpoint. Through the summer of 1838
they were held in a concentration camp. Then, along the infamous
“Trail of Tears,” they were marched hundreds of miles to
Oklahoma. About 3,000 died along the way.

Jackson
promised the Cherokee and other tribes the right to live in that
Oklahoma territory “as long as the grass grows and the rivers
flow.” Fifty years later their “excess land” was given to white
“Sooners” who raced in on horseback and covered wagons to claim
homesteads.

As
for the Civil War, its root cause was conflict over Mexican land.
Mexico abolished slavery in its 1821 revolution against Spain. But
American settlers (many from Tennessee) re-established it in 1836,
when (after the Alamo) they made Texas an independent republic.

Jackson
died in 1845. The next year his protégé, James K. Polk, provoked a
war and took from Mexico what became New Mexico, Arizona, California,
Colorado, Nevada and more. US troops marched all the way into Mexico
City, where young soldiers like Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant
fought side-by-side. Americans like Abraham Lincoln and Henry Thoreau
denounced the conquest as a “poison pill.”

The
Civil War broke out when slave owners demanded the right to spread
slavery into the West. California’s 1850 statehood gave free states
a majority in Congress. War erupted in Kansas, where John Brown and
other abolitionists battled slave owners for control.

The
only way Jackson’s “art of the deal” might have avoided the
Civil War was by persuading northerners to embrace slavery, or
southerners to give it up. But both regions were committed to
expansion, and neither wanted the other’s economic system. When
Lincoln said the nation could not exist “half slave and half free,”
he was tragically correct.

Of
course, war might have been avoided if Jackson’s progeny had given
that land back to Mexico, or restored the Carolinas to the Cherokee,
or persuaded the southerners that slavery was never going to work in
the West anyway. Cotton does not grow in Kansas or the Southwest, and
slavery made no economic sense in the desert, corn or wheat fields.

Without
the Jacksonian conquest of Mexico, the “immigrants” Trump now
attacks would merely be living on their own land. The wall Trump
wants to build tracks a border that did not exist before Polk overran
what was once both our southern and our western neighbor.

Sorting
through his often insane pronouncements about US history, Trump has
seemed surprised to discover that Abraham Lincoln was actually his
fellow Republican, while Jackson was a Democrat. Each was the first
president from his respective party. Both were “men of the people.”
But their views on slavery were, literally, at war with each other.

Trump
might also note that when he retired from the presidency in 1837,
Jackson found a trusted relative had squandered his wealth. Much of
what he’d gouged out of slaughtering Indians and whipping slaves
was gone.

Since
Trump has joined Jackson in using the presidency to enrich himself,
he might want to oversee his sons more carefully.

He
might also try doing a better job with the economy. As Trump’s hero
left office in 1837, his immediate “legacy” featured a major
stock market panic followed by four years of depression.

No
doubt the Great Historian would loudly blame that on the Democrats …
until he realized his hero actually was one.

Oordeel zelf:

The
Evidence That Russia Hacked the DNC Is Collapsing

The Evidence That Russia Hacked the DNC Is Collapsing

(ANTIWAR Op-Ed) The
allegation – now accepted as incontrovertible fact by the
“mainstream” media – that the Russian intelligence services
hacked the Democratic National Committee (and John Podesta’s
emails) in an effort to help Donald Trump get elected recently
suffered a blow from which it may not recover.

Crowdstrike
is the cybersecurity company hired by the DNC to determine who hacked
their accounts: it took them a single day to determine the identity
of the culprits – it was,
they
said
,
two groups of hackers which they named “Fancy Bear” and “Cozy
Bear,” affiliated
respectively with
the GRU, which is Russian military intelligence, and the FSB, the
Russian security service.

How
did they know this?

These
alleged “hacker groups” are not associated with any known
individuals in any way connected to Russian intelligence: instead,
they are identified by the tools they use, the times they do their
dirty work, the nature of the targets, and other characteristics
based on the history of past intrusions.

Yet
as Jeffrey Carr and
other
cyberwarfare experts
 have
pointed out, this methodology is fatally flawed. “It’s important
to know that the process of attributing an attack by a cybersecurity
company has nothing to do with the scientific method,”
writes
Carr
:

Claims
of attribution aren’t testable or repeatable because the hypothesis
is never proven right or wrong. Neither are claims of attribution
admissible in any criminal case, so those who make the claim don’t
have to abide by any rules of evidence (i.e., hearsay, relevance,
admissibility).”

Likening
attribution claims of hacking incidents by cybersecurity companies to
intelligence assessments, Carr notes that, unlike government agencies
such the CIA, these companies are never held to account for their
misses:

When
it comes to cybersecurity estimates of attribution, no one holds the
company that makes the claim accountable because there’s no way to
prove whether the assignment of attribution is true or false unless
(1) there is a criminal conviction, (2) the hacker is
caught in
the act, or (3) a government employee
leaked the
evidence.”

This
lack of accountability may be changing, however, because
Crowdstrike’s case for attributing the hacking of the DNC to the
Russians is falling apart at the seams like a cheap sweater.

To
begin with, Crowdstrike initially gauged its certainty as to the
identity of the hackers with “
medium
confidence
.”
However, a later development, announced in late December and touted
by the
Washington
Post
,
boosted this to “high confidence.” The reason for this newfound
near-certainty was their discovery that “Fancy Bear” had also
infected an application used by the Ukrainian military to target
separatist artillery in the Ukrainian civil war. As
the
Post reported:

While
CrowdStrike, which was hired by the DNC to investigate the intrusions
and whose findings are described in a new report, had always
suspected that one of the two hacker groups that struck the DNC was
the GRU*, Russia’s military intelligence agency, it had only medium
confidence.

Now,
said CrowdStrike co-founder Dmitri Alperovitch, ‘we have high
confidence’ it was a unit of the GRU. CrowdStrike had dubbed that
unit ‘Fancy Bear.’”

Crowdstrike published an
analysis that claimed a malware program supposedly unique to Fancy
Bear, X-Agent, had infected a Ukrainian targeting application and,
using GPS to geo-locate Ukrainian positions, had turned the
application against the Ukrainians, resulting in huge losses:

Between
July and August 2014, Russian-backed forces launched some of the
most-decisive attacks against Ukrainian forces, resulting in
significant loss of life, weaponry and territory.

Ukrainian
artillery forces have lost over 50% of their weapons in the two years
of conflict and over 80% of D-30 howitzers, the highest percentage of
loss of any other artillery pieces in Ukraine’s arsenal.”

Alperovitch told the
PBS News Hour that “Ukraine’s artillery men were targeted by the
same hackers, that we call Fancy Bear, that targeted DNC, but this
time they were targeting cell phones to try to understand their
location so that the Russian artillery forces can actually target
them in the open battle. It was the same variant of the same
malicious code that we had seen at the DNC.”

He told NBC
News that this proved the DNC hacker “wasn’t a 400-pound guy in
his bed,”
as
Trump had opined
 during
the first presidential debate – it was the Russians.

The
only problem with this analysis is that is isn’t true. It turns out
that Crowdstrike’s estimate of Ukrainian losses was based on a
blog
post
 by
a pro-Russian blogger eager to tout Ukrainian losses: the
Ukrainians
denied it.
Furthermore, the hacking attribution was based on the hackers’ use
of a malware program called X-Agent, supposedly unique to Fancy Bear.
Since the target was the Ukrainian military, Crowdstrike extrapolated
from this that the hackers were working for the Russians.

All
somewhat plausible, except for two things: To begin with, as Jeffrey
Carr
pointed
out
 in
December, and now others are beginning to realize, X-Agent isn’t
unique to Fancy Bear.

Citing
the findings of ESET, another cybersecurity company, he wrote:

Unlike
Crowdstrike, ESET doesn’t assign APT28/Fancy Bear/Sednit to a
Russian Intelligence Service or anyone else for a very simple reason.
Once malware is deployed, it is no longer under the control of the
hacker who deployed it or the developer who created it. It can be
reverse-engineered, copied, modified, shared and redeployed again and
again by anyone. In other words  –  malware deployed is malware
enjoyed!

In
fact, the source code for X-Agent, which was used in the DNC,
Bundestag, and TV5Monde attacks, was obtained by
ESET as
part of their investigation!

During
our investigations, we were able to retrieve the complete Xagent
source code for the Linux operating system….”

If
ESET could do it, so can others. It is both foolish and baseless to
claim, as Crowdstrike does, that X-Agent is used solely by the
Russian government when the source code is there for anyone to find
and use at will.”

Secondly,
the estimate Crowdstrike used to verify the Ukrainian losses was
supposedly based on data from the respected International Institute
for Strategic Studies (IISS). But now IISS is disavowing
and
debunking
their claims
:

[T]he International
Institute for Strategic Studies
 (IISS)
told [Voice of America] that CrowdStrike erroneously used IISS data
as proof of the intrusion. IISS disavowed any connection to the
CrowdStrike report. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense also has claimed
combat losses and hacking never happened….

“’The
CrowdStrike report uses our data, but the inferences and analysis
drawn from that data belong solely to the report’s authors,” the
IISS said. “The inference they make that reductions in Ukrainian
D-30 artillery holdings between 2013 and 2016 were primarily the
result of combat losses is not a conclusion that we have ever
suggested ourselves, nor one we believe to be accurate.’

One
of the IISS researchers who produced the data said that while the
think tank had dramatically lowered its estimates of Ukrainian
artillery assets and howitzers in 2013, it did so as part of a
‘reassessment” and reallocation of units to airborne forces.’

No,
we have never attributed this reduction to combat losses,” the IISS
researcher said, explaining that most of the reallocation occurred
prior to the two-year period that CrowdStrike cites in its report.

The
vast majority of the reduction actually occurs … before
Crimea/Donbass,’ he added, referring to the 2014 Russian invasion
of Ukraine.”

The
definitive “evidence” cited by Alperovitch is now effectively
debunked: indeed, it was debunked by Carr late last year, but that
was ignored in the media’s rush to “prove” the Russians hacked
the DNC in order to further Trump’s presidential ambitions. The
exposure by the Voice of America of Crowdstrike’s falsification of
Ukrainian battlefield losses – the supposedly solid “proof” of
attributing the hack to the GRU – is the final nail in
Crowdstrike’s coffin. They didn’t bother to verify their analysis
of IISS’s data with IISS – they simply took as gospel the
allegations of a pro-Russian blogger. They didn’t contact the
Ukrainian military, either: instead, their confirmation bias dictated
that they shaped the “facts” to fit their predetermined
conclusion.

Now
why do you suppose that is? Why were they married so early – after
a single day – to the conclusion that it was the Russians who were
behind the hacking of the DNC?

Crowdstrike
founder Alperovitch is a
Nonresident
Senior Fellow
 of
the Atlantic Council, and head honcho of its “Cyber Statecraft
Initiative” – of which his role in promoting the “Putin did it”
scenario is a Exhibit A. James Carden,
writing in The
Nation
,
makes the trenchant point that “The connection between Alperovitch
and the Atlantic Council has gone largely unremarked upon, but it is
relevant given that the Atlantic Council – which
is
funded in part
 by
the US State Department, NATO, the governments of Latvia and
Lithuania, the Ukrainian World Congress, and the Ukrainian oligarch
Victor Pinchuk – has been among the loudest voices calling for a
new Cold War with Russia.” Adam Johnson,
writing on
the FAIR blog, adds to our knowledge by noting that the Council’s
budget is also supplemented by “a consortium of Western
corporations (Qualcomm, Coca-Cola, The Blackstone Group), including
weapons manufacturers (Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Northrop Grumman)
and oil companies (ExxonMobil, Shell, Chevron, BP).”

Johnson
also notes that CrowdStrike currently has a
$150,000
/ year, no-bid contract
 with
the FBI for “systems analysis.”

Nice
work if you can get it.

This
last little tidbit gives us some insight into what is perhaps the
most curious aspect of the Russian-hackers-campaign-for-Trump story:
the FBI’s complete dependence on

Crowdstrike’s
analysis. Amazingly, the FBI did no independent forensic work on the
DNC servers before Crowdstrike got its hot little hands on them:
indeed,
the
DNC denied the FBI access to the servers
,
and, as far as anyone knows, the FBI
never
examined them
.
BuzzFeed
quotes an
anonymous “intelligence official” as saying “Crowdstrike is
pretty good. There’s no reason to believe that anything they have
concluded is not accurate.”

There
is now.

Alperovitch
is
scheduled
to testify
 before
the House Intelligence Committee, and one wonders if our clueless –
and technically challenged – Republican members of Congress will
question him about the debunking of Crowdstrike’s rush to judgment.
I tend to doubt it, since the Russia-did-it meme is now the Accepted
Narrative and no dissent is permitted – to challenge it would make
them “Putin apologists”! (Although maybe Trey Gowdy, the only
GOPer on that panel who seems to have any brains, may surprise me.)

As I’ve been saying for months,
there is
no
evidence
 that
the Russians hacked the DNC:
nonezilchnada.
Yet this false narrative is the entire basis of a campaign launched
by the Democrats, hailed by the Trump-hating media, and fully
endorsed by the FBI and the CIA, the purpose of which is to “prove”
that Trump is “Putin’s puppet,” as Hillary Clinton
put
it
.
Now the investigative powers of the federal government are being
deployed to confirm that the Trump campaign “colluded” with the
Kremlin in an act the evidence for which is collapsing.

This
whole affair is a vicious fraud. If there is any justice in this
world – and there may not be – the perpetrators should be
charged, tried, and jailed.

As
Trump Takes Power, Politicians Around the US Move to Make Protesting
Illegal

By
Sarah Cronin

January
22, 2017 “
Information
Clearing House

– “Antimedia”
  Indiana
passed a bill on
Wednesday that authorizes police officers to shut down highway
protesting “by any means necessary.” S.B.
285
, as it is known, obliges a public official to dispatch all
available officers within 15 minutes of discovering any assembly of
10 or more people who are obstructing vehicle traffic.

The
bill then authorizes the responding officers to clear roads “by any
means necessary.”

Critics
are calling
it
the “Block Traffic and You Die” bill, an apt name for
a bill that has co-opted the phrase “any means necessary,” used
famously in speech delivered
by Malcolm X during the Civil Rights movement, turning it into a
threat against government dissent (with no apparent awareness of the
irony).

S.B.
285 is among a collection of increasingly hostile ‘anti-obstruction’
laws that have been quietly submitted in states around the nation
over the past few months. A report by
The
Intercept
published Wednesday
tracked five such anti-protest laws introduced by Republican
lawmakers in different states, four of which are currently pending.

One
of the most disturbing among them is House
Bill N. 1203
, a bill introduced earlier this month by North
Dakota lawmaker Keith Kempenich in
response to
the Dakota Access Pipeline Protests (DAPL). The bill
would exempt motorists who hit demonstrators with their cars from any
liability in cases where the victims were “
obstructing
vehicular traffic on a public road, street, or highway
.”
This twisted take on protest criminalization comes short of condoning
manslaughter as a viable means of crowd control.

Also
this month, Minnesota State Representative Kathy Lohmer led the
effort on submitting H.F.
322
, a bill that would re-classify obstructing highway traffic
from a misdemeanor to a “gross misdemeanor” and would authorize
government units to sue protesters for “
public
safety response costs related to unlawful assemblies
.”

The
proposed legislation is strikingly reminiscent of Washington State
Senator Eric Ericksen’s proposal to punish protesters as ‘economic
terrorists,’ which
Anti-Media first reported
on
 in November.

All
of the proposed laws share a common trait in that they were all
adopted in response to a major protest event in that state. H.F. 322
was submitted shortly after a judge
dismissed the riot charges
 against protesters who took to
the St. Paul Interstate last July in a demonstration against the
police shooting of Philando
Castille
. Ericksen’s “economic terrorism” bill announcement
came just days after anti-frackingprotesters blocked
railroad tracks in Olympia, Washington. DAPL protests inspired both
the Indiana and North Dakota bills.

These
retroactive responses on behalf of Republican state lawmakers are
also seen as preemptive strikes against the threat of increased
protests during the Trump presidency.

As
ACLU staff attorney Lee Rowland expressed in an
interview
 with
The
Intercept
,
these so-called ‘obstruction bills’ are but thinly disguised
efforts to squash any government dissent.

A
law that would allow the state to charge a protester $10,000 for
stepping in the wrong place, or encourage a driver to get away with
manslaughter because the victim was protesting, is about one thing:
chilling protest,”
Rowland
said.

Growing
tension between government officials and protesters is expected to
come to a culmination on Inauguration Day in D.C., where there will
already be many barriers in place to limit demonstrations.

First
and foremost is the Federal Grounds and Buildings Improvement Act of
2011, known as H.R
347
.

H.R.-347
is a revision of a 1971 federal trespassing law that made it a crime
to “willfully and knowingly” remain in an area under Secret
Security protection. H.R. 347 removes the word “willingly,” a
legal technicality that effectively lowers the bar on the mental
state required to be found guilty under the law.

As
explained by the American
Civil Liberties Union
:

Under
the original language of the law, you had to act ‘willfully and
knowingly’ when committing the crime. In short, you had to know
your conduct was illegal. Under H.R. 347, you will simply need to act
‘knowingly,’ which here would mean that you know you’re in a
restricted area, but not necessarily that you’re committing a
crime.”

Under
current federal law, protesting in proximity to an elected official
under the protection of the Secret Service, which includes President
Trump, is a crime punishable by fine and up to ten years in jail.

Protesting
during Trump’s inauguration comes with additional complications as
the National Park Service reserves
a large portion
of the inaugural parade route along
Pennsylvania Ave and in Freedom Plaza for ticket sales under the
exclusive discretion of Trump’s Presidential
Inaugural Committee
(PIC). This means the PIC can refuse to
allow protesters along the route.

An
activist group called Act Now to Stop War and End Racism (Answer) has
been engaged in a  legal
battle
with the National Park Service since 2005, arguing
the privatization of the Inauguration is an attempt to “sanitize”
the streets
 of dissent.

While
the National Park Service has been controversially setting aside
tickets for the PIC since
1980
, the issue garnered more attention this year when it was
discovered that the sidewalk in front of the Trump International
Hotel, a significant site for protesters, would be a part of PIC’s
ticket-only area.

Adding
another level of bureaucracy, the
Washington
Post
 reported the
hotel and plaza in front are actually under the control of Trump’s
real estate agency, meaning protesters would have to literally ‘ask
permission’ to remain in the space.

As
the week comes to an end, it becomes apparent that dissent is being
criminalized not only nationwide but on multiple fronts. Increased
regulations are appearing that limit the public spaces that can be
lawfully occupied in protest. Meanwhile, legislation is also being
introduced to increase the negative consequences for newly unlawful
protests. Should more states follow suit with Indiana, demonstrators
will soon find themselves paradoxically protesting for their right to
protest at all.

Ongelofelijk…….

Steve King (VS Congres): openlijk racistisch, zonder enige consequentie…….

Iowa
Congressman Steve King preached literal White Supremacy last night on
an MSNBC panel.

He
was there to discuss the racial makeup of the Republican Party and he
said the following about what he called “subgroups” (A.K.A.
non-Western European descent folks):

I’d
ask you to go back through history and figure out where are these
contributions that have been made by these other categories of people
that you are talking about? Where did any other subgroup of people
contribute more to civilization?”

While
his racist view is not terribly surprising, it is wildly offensive
and we demand he publicly apologize.

His
comment shows a historical, cultural and sociological ignorance at
best and deep-seated proud racism at worst.

There
is no way to spin this comment that doesn’t say “I’m a white
guy who legitimately believes white people are better than everyone
else”. And he isn’t ashamed of that viewpoint, which ultimately
betrays the fact that the RNC is a safe space for vitriolic and
rampant racism.

It’s
astounding that he could say this in a country that was literally
built on the backs of slaves of African descent.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: 8 wijze lessen!

Beyond
Race: 8 Other Important Lessons from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

By: Kevin
Mathews

    17, 2016

Editor’s
note: This post is a Care2 Favorite. It was originally published on
January 21, 2013. Enjoy.

Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. will always be remembered for his leadership
in the crusade for racial equality. And while that plight alone
would be worthy of several holidays, the truth is that Dr. King’s
calls for justice went well beyond skin color. Those who use MLK Day
merely as an opportunity to pat themselves on the back for the
racial progress this country has made are missing the larger
picture. Yes, we have an African American president, but King’s
work is still far from done. To honor King’s legacy today, let’s
reflect on some of the less-remembered lessons he shared:

1. Realize
That Laws Don’t Always Equal Justice

Time
and time again, King saw how a country’s laws could be flat out
wrong. He urged others to question the justice in laws and not
blindly adhere to them just because the powers that be say it is so.
“One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just
laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust
laws. I would agree with St. Augustine that ‘an unjust law is no
law at all,’” King said in
“Letter
from a Birmingham Jail”
.

2. Question
Capitalism

King
spent a lot of time pondering the economic system. He acknowledged
that there are no easy answers in his speech
“Where
Do We Go from Here?”
:
“Communism forgets that life is individual. Capitalism forgets
that life is social. And the kingdom of brotherhood is found [in]
neither… but in a higher synthesis.” In
a
letter to his soon-to-be-wife, Coretta Scott
,
he wrote, “I am not so opposed to capitalism that I have failed to
see its relative merits. It started out with a noble and high
motive… but like most human system it [fell] victim to the very
thing it was revolting against. So today capitalism has outlived its
usefulness. It has brought a system that takes necessities from the
masses to give luxuries to the classes.” With wealth disparity
only compounding today, it is still relevant to question capitalism
and keeping searching for better solutions.

3. Do
Not Affiliate with a Political Party

It’s
not fair to say that King disengaged from the political process –
he was an avid voter and worked alongside various political leaders
when they helped further the pursuit of equality. However,
King
declined
to give his allegiance to either the Democrats or Republicans
.
“I feel that someone must remain in the position of nonalignment,
so that he can look objectively at both parties and be the conscience
of both – not the servant or master of either,” he said. Seeing
the faults of both sides, King chose to work both inside and outside
of the political system to accomplish progress rather than settling
for the lesser of two evils.

4. Vocally
Oppose War

Before
reading King’s speech “
Remaining
Awake through a Great Revolution
,”
I wouldn’t have guessed that the term “military-industrial
complex” existed all the way back in 1968. But even during the
Vietnam War era, people were well aware of the corporate profiteering
was a main motivation in waging war. King pointed out that the U.S.
military spent half a million dollars for every Vietnam solider it
killed, while only spending $53 on each American living in poverty
annually. In addition to pointing out these faulty priorities (which
continue today), he warned that playing with nuclear warfare would
lead to mutual destruction: “It is no longer a choice, my friends,
between violence and nonviolence. It is either nonviolence or
nonexistence.”

5. Support
Unions

Much
as unions are still vilified today, the labor movement has always
been under attack.
In
a 1961 speech
,
King supported the collective power of workers, saying, “History is
a great teacher. Now everyone knows that the labor movement did not
diminish the strength of the nation but enlarged it. By raising the
standards of millions, labor miraculously created a market for
industry and lifted the whole nation to undreamed levels of
production. Those who attack labor forget these simple truths, but
history remembers them.”

6. Foster
Critical Thinking in Our Schools

In
his article
“The
Purpose of Education,”
 King
worried whether the educational system was failing. He wrote, “To
think incisively and to think for one’s self is very difficult. We
are prone to let our mental life become invaded by legions of half
truths, prejudices, and propaganda. At this point, I often wonder
whether or not education is fulfilling its purpose. A great majority
of the so-called educated people do not think logically and
scientifically… To save man from the morass of propaganda, in my
opinion, is one of the chief aims of education. Education must enable
one to sift and weigh evidence, to discern the true from the false,
the real from the unreal, and the facts from the fiction.”
Considering that many schools today value instructing what to think
rather than how to think, this battle for promoting critical thinking
is ongoing.

7.
Provide Free/Affordable Access to Health Care

Of
all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most
shocking and inhumane,” King declared
in
a 1966 speech
.
He hoped that in revealing the inequalities in treatment options for
people of different races, genders and class, the disparities could
be overcome. The fact that aiding the sick and dying – without
either forcing them into poverty or outright denying care – is
still up for debate is nothing short of a tragedy.

  1. Commit
    to Non-Violence

In
his essay
“The
Power of Non-Violence,”
 King
explained the struggle in convincing his allies to resist the urge to
fight back against violent oppression. “It is not a method of
stagnant passivity and deadening complacency… This method is
nonaggressive physically but strongly aggressive spiritually.”
Though turning the other cheek takes restraint, King believed that
the side that is seen to suffer for its cause is more easily viewed
as righteous. He also knew that violence would not ultimately bring
about positive change: “The aftermath of violence is bitterness.
The aftermath of nonviolence is reconciliation and the creation of a
beloved community.”

————

Although
the United States has certainly made major (but hardly complete)
strides in overcoming racism since King’s time, most of the other
justices he spoke out against are still as problematic as ever – if
not more so. Let us commemorate today by remembering that Dr. Martin
Luther King would not consider his campaign for change complete –
and, therefore, neither should we.

Charles Groenhuijsen ‘schreef een boek’, o.a. over psychopaat Trump

The Republican Lifeguard

RepublicanLifeguard
