illegale oorlog tegen Irak……

4 miljard dollar…….

These
Are the US Companies Backing the Venezuelan Coup Attempt

(MPN— For
much of the past twenty years, critics of U.S. foreign policy have
noted that it is often countries with sizeable oil reserves that most
often find themselves the targets of U.S.-backed “humanitarian”
interventions aimed at “restoring democracy.” Analysis of the
nearly two-decades-long U.S. effort aimed at regime change and
“democracy promotion” in Venezuela has long linked such efforts
to the fact that the South American country has the world’s largest
proven oil reserves.

However,
the current U.S. effort to topple the government led by Chavista
politician Nicolás Maduro has become notable for the openness of the
“coup architects” in admitting that putting American corporations
– Chevron and Halliburton chief among them — in charge of
Venezuelan oil resources is the driving factor behind this aggressive
policy.

Last
week, Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) – a key player in the Trump
administration’s push for regime change in Caracas –
tweeted:

Biggest
[American] buyers of Venezuelan oil are Valero Energy & Chevron.
Refining heavy crude from Venezuela supports great jobs in Gulf
Coast. For the sake of these U.S. workers I hope they will begin
working with administration of President [Juan] Guaidó & cut off
illegitimate Maduro regime.”

In
January, the U.S. government recognized Juan Guaidó of
the
U.S.-funded
and CIA-linked
 Popular
Will Party as the “legitimate” president of the country.

For the sake of these U.S. workers I hope they will begin working with administration of President Guaido & cut off illegitimate Maduro regime.

A
few hours after Rubio’s tweet, National Security Adviser John
Bolton — who
actively
supported
 the
U.S.-backed failed Venezuela coup in 2002 —
appeared
on
Fox
News
 and
told host Trish Regan the following: “We’re looking at the oil
assets. That’s the single most important income stream to the
government of Venezuela. We’re looking at what to do to that.”

Though
that was a stunning admission in and of itself, Bolton didn’t stop
there. He continued:

We’re
in conversation with major American companies now that are either in
Venezuela, or in the case of Citgo here in the United States. I think
we’re trying to get to the same end result here…. It will make a
big difference to the United States economically if we could have
American oil companies really invest in and produce the oil
capabilities in Venezuela.”

Bolton’s
statements have garnered considerable attention in the alternative
media community for their boldness, since leaked cables and documents
have traditionally been the means through which the actual
motivations of U.S. wars have been revealed. Largely overlooked,
however, is the fact that Bolton stated that the Trump administration
is working closely “with major American companies now that are
either in Venezuela, or in the case of Citgo, here in the United
States.”

Given
that Citgo is largely owned by Venezuela’s state oil company
Petroleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA), Bolton’s statement reveals that
the corporations backing Washington’s regime-change push are those
currently operating in Venezuela.

At
present, there are only two American major oil and oil service
companies with a significant presence in Venezuela – Chevron and
Halliburton. However, Chevron is by far the leading American investor
in Venezuelan oil projects, with Halliburton having
written
off
 much
of its remaining business interests in the country just last year —
losing hundreds of millions of dollars as a result.

These
two companies have long been “
historic
partners

and have had a solid business relationship between them for decades.
In addition, both have reaped the benefits of past U.S. interventions
abroad — such as the Iraq War, where the U.S. government “opened”
that country’s nationalized oil industry to American oil companies
with military force.

Now
with Venezuela’s nationalized oil industry in the crosshairs,
Chevron and Halliburton are again set to benefit from Washington’s
regime-change policies abroad. Furthermore, as Bolton’s recent
statements suggest, these companies are also the top corporate
sponsors of the current U.S.-backed coup to topple the government in
Caracas.

Profitable
but not Rockefeller-profitable

Chevron’s
history in Venezuela is long and storied, as its presence in the
country dates back more than a century. Over that time, Chevron’s
presence in Venezuela has remained a constant despite the rule of
drastically different governments, from military dictatorships to the
socialist Chavista movement.

For
much of its history in Venezuela, Chevron has had to deal with the
Venezuelan government’s laws regarding oil production,
particularly
a
1943 law
 that
held that foreign companies could not make greater profits from oil
than they paid to the Venezuelan state. A few decades later in the
1960s, foreign corporations were made to manage their oil extraction
projects in Venezuela by working closely with the Venezuelan Oil
corporation, which later gave way to the current state oil company
PDVSA, created in 1976. It was around this period that Halliburton
first began work in Venezuela.

However,
foreign corporations — particularly American ones — disliked
having to settle for minority stakes in PDVSA projects and longed for
the early days of Venezuela oil extraction when companies like
Rockefeller-owned Standard Oil made wild profits off their Venezuelan
oil assets.

After
the “apertura petrolera” (or “oil opening” to foreign
investment) in the early 1990s — and especially under the
U.S.-backed government of Rafael Caldera, the president who
immediately preceded Hugo Chávez — it seemed that the
privatization of PDVSA was soon to become a reality and companies
like Chevron, ExxonMobil and Halliburton enjoyed the “golden age”
of American oil interests in Venezuela. However, Caldera’s fall
from grace and the rise of Chavismo quickly shattered this
decades-long dream of U.S. corporations and politicians.

Not
only did Chávez end any possibility of PDVSA’s privatization,
he
also
weakened
 what
remaining influence transnational oil companies had over the state
oil company. For instance, he appointed independent oil experts to
PDVSA’s board of directors, upending years of precedent where PDVSA
managers with close ties to international companies had been
responsible for controlling the board’s membership.

Chávez
further restricted corporate ownership on some oil projects to 49
percent and fired PDVSA’s then-president, replacing him with a
political ally. These drastic changes, among others, led to a strike
among many long-time PDVSA workers, a strike that immediately
preceded the failed U.S.-backed coup attempt in April 2002.

Following
the coup, Chávez dismantled a joint venture originally established
in 1996 between PDVSA and the Venezuelan subsidiary of the U.S.-based
company SAIC, known as INTESA.

INTESA,
per the agreement, had controlled all of PDVSA’s company data (and
its secrets), which it
then
fed
 to
the U.S. government and U.S. oil corporations until Chávez destroyed
it. This is hardly surprising given that the managers of SAIC at the
time included two former U.S. secretaries of defense and two former
CIA directors. Though obviously a smart move for Chávez, it weakened
an advantage of U.S. corporations who had inside information on PDVSA
while INTESA was operational.

The
tensions between the Chavista government and the U.S. government
along with U.S. corporations only grew from there before reaching a
crescendo in 2007. That year, Chávez
announced
a decree
 that
would nationalize the remaining oil extraction sites under foreign
company control, giving PDVSA a minimum 60 percent stake in all of
those ventures. U.S. oil companies ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips left
their Venezuelan operations behind as a result, losing billions in
the process. The president of ExxonMobil at the time was Rex
Tillerson — who would later become President Donald Trump’s first
secretary of state.

Yet,
during this time, Chevron, unique among American oil companies, saw
an opportunity and spent the next several years cultivating close
ties to the Chavista government and Chávez himself.

Through
the efforts of Chevron executive Ali Moshiri, Chevron blazed a new
trail that would later serve as a model for foreign oil companies
seeking to do business in Chavista-led Venezuela. Halliburton and
another U.S.-based oil services company, Schlumberger, also decided
to continue business in Venezuela.

During
this time, the Venezuelan government through PDVSA and
Chevron
entered
into
 several
joint ventures
,
one of the most important of which became known as Petropiar, which
blends Venezuela’s heavy crude oil with other substances to make it
more easily transportable. However, Chevron — due to Chávez’s
reforms of the oil sector — was forced to settle for minority
stakes in all of these ventures.

Halliburton,
which has historically been a main operator for Chevron-owned oil
fields, again partnered with Chevron’s post-2007 ventures in
Venezuela and
operates the
Petropiar and Petroboscan oil fields that both have minority Chevron
ownership.

For
years, Chevron’s bet on Chavismo paid off and the profits rolled
in. Moshiri even appeared in public on several occasions with Chávez,
who once even called the Chevron executive “
a
dear friend
.”
However, following Chávez’s death in 2013 and the beginning of the
U.S-backed economic siege of Venezuela soon after — first through
joint oil-price manipulation in cooperation with Saudi Arabia and
then through sanctions — the profits of PDVSA, and thus Chevron,
have fallen dramatically. During this time, Houston-based
Schlumberger drastically
scaled
back
 its
operations in Venezuela.

Since
then, relations between the Maduro-led government and Chevron have
deteriorated precipitously and now, with the current U.S. coup in
motion, Chevron is poised to turn on the Chavista government with the
hopes that profits will not only improve but exceed what they were
during the heights of the Chevron-Chávez partnership.

Betting
on regime change

As
oil production has lagged and profits have continued to slide,
tensions between Chevron and the Maduro government have grown
dramatically since 2017, when the Maduro-led government
began
arresting
 employees
of Petropiar — the joint venture between Chevron and PDVSA —
during a controversial corruption probe. For Chevron, the issue
exploded after the Venezuelan government last April
arrested two
Chevron employees working at Petropiar, who were detained for seven
weeks for their alleged role in fraud. Those tensions — in
combination with worries that Chevron’s Venezuela operations could
become unprofitable in less than five years — resulted in
a
report
 published
by the
Wall
Street Journal
 claiming
that Chevron was considering leaving Venezuela entirely.

However,
despite media speculation in the U.S., Chevron denied that it was
planning to leave Venezuela anytime soon, with Clay Neff, Chevron’s
president for Africa and Latin America,
telling Bloomberg,
“we’re committed to Venezuela and we plan to be there for many
years to come,” and adding that reports that Chevron would soon
leave the country were “not accurate.” “We’ve been in the
country for almost 100 years, we know how to operate, we’re a very
experienced operator and we’re committed to our partner PDVSA,”
Neff declared.

Halliburton’s
activities in Venezuela have also taken a hard hit in recent years,
with the company losing over $1 billion in investments since 2017. In
2017, Halliburton was forced to write off $647 million in Venezuelan
investments and then was forced to sell $312 million more last year —
its last remaining investments. Halliburton’s chief financial
officer, Christopher Weber,
told
the
New
York Times
 last
year that “the collapse of the Venezuelan currency and the
worsening political climate,” as well as U.S. sanctions, were
responsible for the decision. Halliburton later said
in
a statement
 that
it planned on “maintaining its presence in Venezuela and is
carefully managing its go-forward exposure.”

Since
both Halliburton and Chevron announced their plans to “weather the
storm” despite growing tensions, it has become more and more
evident that both companies have found the U.S. government’s
promise of increased control over Venezuela’s oil sector through
privatization much more appealing than facing the prospect of
maneuvering around recently imposed U.S. sanctions on PDVSA — which
have been in the works for months — as well as the prospect of
dwindling profits stemming from the continued decline of the
Venezuelan economy and the degradation of its oil-sector
infrastructure.

This
raises the possibility that Chevron and Halliburton had decided to
ride out the Venezuelan economic crisis and growing tensions with
Maduro because it was betting on an aggressive regime-change policy
toward the country. Indeed, some analysts
have
stated
 that
planning on the current iteration of regime-change policy in
Venezuela only began this past November, around the same time that
Chevron decided to stick it out despite falling profits.

The
fact that Chevron’s operations in Venezuela are
expected
to collapse
 in
less than five years, as a result of the country’s oil sector and
larger economic woes, lends further support to the possibility that
Chevron sought to back a Washington-based effort to dramatically
alter the Venezuelan government.

In
Halliburton’s case, the fact that the company has already lost over
a billion dollars in its Venezuelan investments since 2017 offers a
different motive, one that involves not only recouping those losses
but also gaining increased contracts in a post-coup Venezuela.

Halliburton
executives surely remember the
$39.5
billion
 in
profits they made following the U.S. invasion of Iraq. It is worth
pointing out that, in media reports, Halliburton has stated its
commitment “
to
the market in Venezuela
,”
signaling that it is interested in retaining a role in the country’s
oil sector regardless of who governs it.

It
should then come as no surprise that recent U.S. government sanctions
on Venezuela’s oil sectors included exemptions for both Halliburton
and Chevron. Equally unsurprising is the fact that the U.S.-backed
“president” of Venezuela — Juan Guaidó — has already
signaled his plans to open up Venezuela’s state oil assets to
foreign corporations if he succeeds in ousting Maduro.

According
to
oil
rating agency S&P Global Platts
,
Guaidó has already made “plans to introduce a new national
hydrocarbons law that establishes flexible fiscal and contractual
terms for projects adapted to oil prices and the oil investment
cycle.” This plan would also create a “new hydrocarbons agency”
that will “offer bidding rounds for projects in natural gas and
conventional, heavy and extra-heavy crude” to international oil
corporations.

The
clear message here is that the U.S.-backed “president” of
Venezuela is already signaling to his Washington backers that he will
quickly privatize Venezuela’s state oil company if he succeeds in
taking power, a move that has long been
a
key component
 of
the platform of Venezuela’s U.S.-funded opposition, of which Guaidó
is part.

Bolton’s
recent statements have made it clear that Chevron and Halliburton are
set to be the main benefactors of this privatization effort, as both
are heavily invested in Venezuela and Chevron the only U.S. oil
company still active in the country. The historically close
relationship of both companies to the U.S. government, and covert
coordination with the U.S. government in undermining or overthrowing
governments in the recent past, also hint at their likely role in the
current U.S. “meddling” in Venezuela.

Boosting
profits through foreign intervention

If
the U.S. succeeds in ousting Maduro and putting Guaidó in his place,
it will only be the latest example of U.S. government policy that
directly benefits the bottom lines of Chevron and Halliburton. In
Chevron’s case, the company’s growth to become one of the largest
oil companies in the world has consistently been aided by the U.S.
establishment, regardless of whether Democrats or Republicans held
the presidency. Indeed,
 as Seeking
Alpha
 noted
:

Chevron’s
stocks gained a combined 247% under Presidents Reagan and George HW
Bush. Under President George W Bush, its shares rose by 157%.
Meanwhile, Chevron’s shares picked up 222% and 112% under
Presidents Clinton and Obama, respectively.”

Notably,
Chevron has also worked with past U.S. presidents in undermining
democratically-elected governments in order to advance its business
interests, with the most recent example taking place in Haiti.
Cables
published by WikiLeaks
 showed
that Chevron, in 2006 and 2007, partnered with ExxonMobil and the
U.S. government to undermine the presidency of former Haitian
president René Préval after he forged a deal with Chávez’s
PetroCaribe alliance that allowed Haiti to buy subsidized Venezuelan
oil.

Furthermore,
Chevron also
benefited
greatly
 from
the U.S. invasion of Iraq and its representatives were among those
who met with then-Vice President Dick Cheney in 2003 to plan Iraq’s
“postwar” — i.e., post-invasion — industry that led Chevron
to acquire ownership of several Iraqi oil fields. Notably, the family
of then-President George W. Bush is one of Chevron’s
largest
shareholders
.
In addition, then-National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice was
a
Chevron executive
 throughout
the 1990s, and was in charge of public policy for its board of
directors immediately prior to joining the Bush administration. Rice
even had a Chevron oil tanker named in her honor in 1993.

Though
Chevron greatly benefited from the Bush administration’s
destruction of Iraq, Halliburton came away the biggest winner from
the Iraq war, making
$39.5
billion
 off
the conflict and its aftermath after being awarded numerous,
lucrative contracts to “rebuild” the country. This outcome is
unsurprising given that Cheney served as the company’s CEO for
decades and retained $34 million in company stock throughout his
tenure as U.S. vice president.

Iraq
had been targeted by the Bush administration soon after Bush came to
power, particularly following the formation of Cheney’s 2001 Energy
Task Force, which called for the privatization of Iraq’s
then-nationalized oil resources and reviewed maps of Iraq’s oil
fields and lists of companies seeking contracts with Baghdad years
before the war officially began.

Investing
in a gung-ho president

Chevron’s
hopes for a continued U.S. government policy that favors its growth
domestically and globally have continued under the Trump
administration and have been visible for some time, as evidenced by
its
$500,000
donation
 to
Trump’s inaugural committee and their top executive’s praise for
the “pro-business environment” cultivated by the Trump
administration. Indeed, in March 2017, then-Chevron CEO John
Watson
told CNBC that
he had already met with White House staff on “multiple occasions”
in just the first three months of the administration and had been
“encouraged by those meetings.” “We’ve seen a more
pro-business environment … I think the approach they’re taking
toward business — toward enabling our economy to grow again — is
a real positive,” Watson added.

Halliburton
too has long had high hopes for Trump given that the president
held
between $50,000 and $100,000
 in
company stock up until December 2016, when he sold his personal
stocks to avoid “conflicts of interest” during his presidency.
However, some of Trump’s earliest policy proposals were described
by the media as
directly
benefiting
 Halliburton,
including his administration’s push to open more publicly-held
lands in the U.S. to oil drilling.

Furthermore,
the recent scandal that forced Trump’s secretary of the interior,
Ryan Zinke,
to
resign
 involved
Zinke’s
alleged
corrupt dealings
 with
Halliburton chairman David Lesar, suggesting that the Trump
administration’s potential for a conflict of interest with
Halliburton did not magically dissipate following Trump’s sale of
his personal investments.

Since
the early days of the administration, both Halliburton and Chevron
have benefited directly from several Trump administration policies,
both foreign and domestic. For instance, Chevron and
Halliburton
benefited
substantially
 from
the Trump administration’s tax cuts, which were
 recently
found
 to
have had “no major impact” on economic growth or company hiring
practices but instead enabled mega-corporations to
buy
back stocks en masse
 in
order to increase their companies’ stock prices. After the passage
of those tax cuts, Chevron executives
 urged
governments
 around
the world to implement similar legislation.

In
addition, consider Trump’s 2017 decision to withdraw from the
Extractive Industries

Transparency
Initiative (EITI), which
Reuters explained
as
 “a
global standard for governments to disclose their revenues from oil,
gas, and mining assets, and for companies to report payments made to
obtain access to publicly owned resources, as well as other
donations.”
Bloomberg noted at
the time that the Trump administration’s decision to withdraw had
followed “a long lobbying battle waged by the American Petroleum
Institute, Exxon Mobil Corp. and Chevron Corp.”

The
involvement of top U.S. oil corporations like Chevron in the
administration’s decision to withdraw from the EITI led Corinna
Gilfillan, head of the U.S. Office at NGO Global Witness, to state
that it was “Exxon and Chevron’s preference for secrecy that
[had] made it impossible for the U.S. to comply.” Gilfillan
then
told Common
Dreams
:

When
major Russian and Chinese oil companies are disclosing more
information about their deals around the world than their
U.S. counterparts, you have got to ask: what are Exxon and
Chevron so desperate to hide?”

However,
Chevron, for its part, has not agreed with every Trump policy, as the
company did lob
considerable
criticism
 at
the Trump administration last June over his imposition of steel
tariffs during the first phase of the ongoing “trade war” with
China. Yet, that criticism disappeared a few months later, when
another Trump policy – his draconian sanctions targeting Iran’s
oil sector – took effect. As
the Washington
Examiner
 noted
 this
past November, Trump’s sanction policy targeting Iranian oil “has
proved a lucrative one for the shareholders who own oil companies
such as ExxonMobil and Chevron,” resulting in a jump for those
companies’ third-quarter earnings “that topped Wall Street
expectations by wide margins.”

The Examiner went
onto note that Trump’s sanctions on Iranian oil exports led
Chevron’s net income to more than double to $4.1 billion, with cash
from operations reaching “the highest it has been in nearly five
years.”

However,
Halliburton’s reaction to Trump’s Iran policy is more mixed,
given its considerable business interests in Iran and the fact that
it
had
benefited
 from
the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA) approved by the previous administration of
Barack Obama. Yet, if the Trump administration’s regime-change
policy targeting Iran succeeds, Halliburton will be among the top
beneficiaries of that policy as well, given its already established
presence in the country.

Now,
with Venezuela’s massive oil resources in the Trump
administration’s crosshairs, Chevron stands to gain once again from
Trump’s foreign policy, which has been guided by oil politics in
several instances.

Trump
ready to test out his “Take the Oil” intervention policy

Though
Trump has yet to make bold, Boltonesque public statements regarding
the clear link between Venezuelan oil and his administration’s
regime-change policy, his past statements regarding U.S.
interventions in oil-rich nations elsewhere show that Trump has long
backed U.S. intervention in foreign nations if it meant that the U.S.
could secure that country’s natural resources, namely oil.

For
instance, in 2011, Trump
 told
the
Wall
Street Journal
 that
he would support U.S.-backed intervention in Libya if the U.S. could
“take the oil.” In the eight years since the U.S.-backed
intervention, Libya remains without a central government and is now
the site of rampant terrorist activity, a massive illegal arms trade,
and a booming slave trade.

Then,
in 2016, candidate Trump again asserted that the U.S. should “take
the oil” when intervening or invading foreign nations.
Trump
 told NBC
News
 in
September 2016 that the terror group Daesh (ISIS) emerged only
because the U.S. had not taken Iraq’s oil after the 2003 invasion.

Trump
also stated, with regard to Iraq, that:

We
go in, we spent $3 trillion. We lose thousands and thousands of
lives, and then look, what happens is we get nothing. You know, it
used to be the victor belong the spoils. Now, there was no victor
there, believe me. There was no victory. But I always said, take the
oil.”

While
Trump has not publicly touted his “take the oil” policy in
relation to the current situation in Venezuela, he has done so
privately during several White House meetings early on in his
presidency. According to
the Wall
Street Journal
:

Mr.
Trump requested a briefing on Venezuela in his second day in office,
often speaking to his team about the suffering of Venezuelan people
and the country’s immense potential to become a rich nation
through its oil reserves.”

Thus,
Bolton’s as well as Senator Rubio’s frank admissions that the
Trump administration’s Venezuela regime-change policy is about the
oil and giving that oil to American companies, are clearly aligned
with a policy that the president himself has long supported.

Washington’s
gift to Big Oil: privatize PDVSA, no matter the human cost

As
with Iraq, Libya and other U.S. oil-motivated interventions of the
past, the destruction of Venezuela’s nationalized oil industry and
its privatization to American oil companies — especially Chevron
and Halliburton — is the guiding factor behind the U.S.’ current
regime-change policy targeting Caracas. While past administrations
attempted to obfuscate their “wars for oil” as “restoring
democracy,” Trump administration officials and other “coup
architects” have recently “gone off script” and overtly stated
the guiding principle behind its Venezuela policy.

However,
the timing of the Trump administration’s regime-change push in
Venezuela is key. While companies like Chevron and Halliburton have
been hemorrhaging profits in recent years, they have so far withstood
the fallout due to the record high production of U.S. shale oil. Yet,
the “golden age” of U.S. shale is quickly disappearing, with
top
industry insiders
 like
Harold Hamm along with
Halliburton’s
rival company
,
Schlumberger, expecting shale output growth to slow by as much as 50
percent
this
year
.
Hamm is
a
close confidant
 of
President Trump.

If
this comes to pass, American oil companies will be in a bad way. Yet,
if Guaidó comes to power and privatizes PDVSA, U.S. oil companies —
with Chevron and Halliburton leading the pack — stand to make
record profits in the world’s most oil rich nation, as they did in
Iraq following the privatization of its national oil industry after
U.S. intervention.

Worst
of all, as the U.S.’ past interventions in Iraq and Libya and
elsewhere have shown, Washington stands willing to kill untold
thousands of innocent people in Venezuela — either through
direct
military intervention
 or a
proxy war
 —
to benefit American oil companies. Will the American people let yet
another presidential administration destroy an entire nation for
Chevron, Halliburton and other powerful American corporations?

==================================

* Het gaat hier niet om economisch wanbeleid. De deplorabele toestand van de economie is één op één te danken aan de eerst stiekeme economische oorlogsvoering van de VS tegen Venezuela, die intussen is veranderd in een openlijke economische oorlogsvoering middels sancties, een oorlog waar ook Canada en de EU zich bij hebben aangesloten, naast fascistisch geregeerde landen als Brazilië, Colombia, Guatemala en Honduras…… (ja ook Nederland bevindt zich weer in ‘goed gezelschap…’)

Vice
President Mike Pence called Guaido the night before his announcement
and “pledged” that the Trump administration would support him.

(CD— As
U.S.
lawmakers,
civil society leaders, and Latin America experts
continue
to warn against
 American
intervention in Venezuela’s internal political affairs, the
Wall
Street Journal
 on
Friday confirmed suspicions that opposition leader Juan Guaido’s
move to
declare
himself
 “interim
president” of Venezuela this week was highly coordinated with the
Trump White House and Republican lawmakers.

of State Mike Pompeo arrives at a meeting of the Permanent Council of
the Organization of American States (OAS), on January 24, 2019 in

According
to
 the Journal,
Vice President Mike Pence called Guaido the night before his
announcement and “pledged” that the Trump administration would
support him “if he seized the reins of government from [elected
President] Nicolas Maduro by invoking a clause in the South American
country’s constitution.”

That
late-night call set in motion a plan that had been developed in
secret over the preceding several weeks, accompanied by talks between
U.S. officials, allies, lawmakers, and key Venezuelan opposition
figures, including Mr. Guaido himself,” the
Journal reported,
citing an anonymous administration official. “Almost instantly,
just as Mr. Pence had promised, President Trump issued a statement
recognizing Mr. Guaido as the country’s rightful leader.”

Christy Thornton

@llchristyll

The coordination was clear to observers, but now the WSJ has it: Pence calling Guaidó and telling him to invoke the clause in the constitution that would allow him to take power https://www.wsj.com/articles/a-call-from-pence-helped-set-an-uncertain-new-course-in-venezuela-11548430259

Guaido’s
move and U.S. President Donald Trump’s rapid endorsement
were
quickly
decried
as
a dangerous intervention—or the beginnings of a coup d’etat—which
progressives argued would dramatically worsen the country’s
economic and political crisis. As
Common
Dreams
 reported,
over 70 academics and experts signed an open letter demanding that
the U.S. “cease encouraging violence by pushing for violent,
extralegal regime change.”

At
the center of the push to oust Maduro and replace him with Guaido,
the
Journal reports,
were some of the most hawkish congressional Republicans and members
of Trump’s cabinet, including national security adviser John
Bolton, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and Sen. Marco Rubio
(R-Fla.), as well as officials from the right-wing governments of
Brazil and Colombia.

According
to the
Journal,
a “decisive moment” in the behind-the-scenes planning came on
Tuesday, Jan. 22, when Trump met with top White House officials and
Republican lawmakers the day before scheduled street protests by
the opposition.

Other
officials who met that day at the White House included… Pompeo and
Bolton, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, and Treasury Secretary Steven
Mnuchin, who presented Mr. Trump with options for recognizing Mr.
Guaido,” the
Journal reported.
“Mr. Trump decided to do it. Mike Pence, who wasn’t at that
meeting, placed his phone call to Mr. Guaido to tell him, ‘If the
National Assembly invoked Article 233 the following day, the
president would back him.’”

Responding
to the
Journal‘s
reporting on Friday, Ben Norton—reporter for
The
Real News
—noted
in a series of tweets that it is now clear the “U.S. is not just
‘behind’ this coup; the U.S. is openly leading the coup.”

Ben Norton

@BenjaminNorton

The US had been planning this coup in Venezuela. It was the Trump administration that told the little-known opposition leader Juan Guaidó to declare himself (unelected) “president.”

While
the specifics of the attempt to oust Maduro were worked out behind
the scenes, the Trump administration has never been quiet about its
desire for regime change in Venezuela.

As Common
Dreams
 reported,
Trump declared in September that the Venezuelan government “could
be toppled very quickly” and warned that “all options are on the
table” with regard to U.S. actions in the country.

The
strong ones and the less than strong ones, and you know what I mean
by strong. Every option is on the table with respect to Venezuela,”
Trump said.

The
president and Pompeo both reiterated this warning on Wednesday, with
the secretary of state threatening “
appropriate
actions

if the Venezuelan military does not protect U.S. diplomats, who
Maduro has ordered to leave the country.

Progressive
organizations, lawmakers, and advocacy groups in the U.S. have
denounced the Trump administration’s decision to recognize Guaido,
arguing that American interference only increases the likelihood of
violence and demanding peaceful negotiations.

In
statement on
Friday, the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) argued that
“[b]oth the increasingly top-down Venezuelan government as well as
the fractious Venezuelan opposition, which has at times resorted to
anti-democratic methods, bear significant responsibility for the
current crisis and there are important critiques to be leveled
against both.”

The
organization concluded by calling on “the U.S. government to
immediately cease and desist all attempts to intervene in the
internal politics of Venezuela and break with its shameful legacy of
imperial control in the region.”

Sen.
Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) echoed this demand in a
series
of tweets
 late
Thursday, highlighting

the
United States’ “long history of inappropriately intervening in
Latin American countries” and declaring that “we must not go down
that road again.”

The
Maduro government in Venezuela has been waging a violent crackdown on
Venezuelan civil society, violated the constitution by dissolving the
National Assembly, and was re-elected last year in an election that
many observers said was fraudulent,” Sanders wrote. “But we must
learn the lessons of the past and not be in the business of regime
change or supporting coups.”

ANALYSIS
GLOBAL
US

The US is banging the drums of war in Latin America. This is a catastrophe in motion.

John McEvoy

14th January 2019

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor The US is banging the drums of war in Latin America. This is a catastrophe in motion.

Within just days of Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro’s inauguration, the US has declared his presidency illegitimate and is agitating for his removal. Brazil has also refused to recognise Maduro, and Washington’s other Latin American allies have joined in condemning his government. In short, the drums of war are once again thundering in Latin America.

But US-backed military intervention (or, even worse, US military intervention) in Venezuela would be a catastrophe. The US has no legitimate right to intervene; and nor does it seem to have genuine concerns about ordinary Venezuelans.

The drums of war

On 11 January, US national security adviser John Bolton announced that the US will:

“continue to use the full weight of United States economic and diplomatic power to press for the restoration of a Venezuelan democracy that reverses the current constitutional crisis”.

With Washington’s blessing, Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó (also president of the country’s national assembly) has been, according to the New York Times, “proposing to take power”. Critical observers might argue that he’s pushing for a military coup. After Venezuelan police briefly detained Guaidó on 13 January, Bolton continued his tirade on Twitter.

Florida senator Marco Rubio, meanwhile, said that the US should recognise Guaidó as Venezuela’s leader:

Marco Rubio

@marcorubio

The U.S. has declared Maduro Presidency illegitimate.

Under constitution of in the absence of a president, the head of the National Assembly assumes power until new elections.

Which is why U.S. should recognize @jguaido as legitimate President.

As The Canary has reported previously, Venezuela’s democracy isn’t perfect; but nor is that of the US, the UK, Mexico, or countless other countries. And judging by Washington’s long record of intervention, democracy and human rights are not its true priorities in Venezuela.

US hypocrisy

Within just 24 hours of condemning Venezuela, for example, Pompeo posted three separatetweets about US ally Saudi Arabia. He wrote that he was “grateful for the work you do on an ongoing basis to advance U.S. foreign policy”:

Secretary Pompeo

@SecPompeo

Thank you to the @USAinKSA team for all you did to support my visit, and grateful for the work you do on an ongoing basis to advance U.S. foreign policy.

1,725

12:36 – 14 Jan 2019

The hypocrisy is clear.
Because there are fewer than ten absolute
monarchies (undemocratic
by nature) in the world, and Saudi Arabia is one of them. With
Washington’s backing, meanwhile, Saudi Arabia is instigating what
the UN has called the “world’s worst humanitarian
crisis
in Yemen. So considering that democracy and human rights are among
the chief public justifications for US interest in Venezuela, support
for Saudi leaves it with
no
leg to stand on
.

In fact, US sanctions on
Venezuela – which have
intensified under
Trump – are actively contributing to the suffering of ordinary
Venezuelans. In the
words of The
Empire Files

Abby Martin, sanctions are “real attacks that kill real people”.

Supposed US concerns in
Venezuela are therefore
unconvincing.
And even if they were sincere, the US would have no greater
legitimacy to intervene within another sovereign nation.

Perhaps Venezuela’s
massive
oil
reserves
 can
better explain why the country’s been in Washington’s
crosshairs for
decades”.

Don’t
let history repeat itself

Over past decades, the US
has left a bloody trail of
destruction in
Latin America and beyond. And as US political leaders seek to
de-legitimise Maduro as a condition for intervention, it seems that
history is repeating itself.

We must recognise US
imperialist strategy when we see it – and condemn it.

Mensen,

(MEE— A US Senate measure encouraging states and local governments to “divest” from companies that boycott Israel has stirred controversy in Washington, with civil rights groups rallying against the proposal and Senator Bernie Sanders slamming it as “absurd”.

The
measure, presented in a wider Middle East foreign policy bill, was
introduced last week amidst a partial shutdown of the federal
government, which was caused by a political impasse over funding
between Democrats and President Donald Trump’s Republican Party.

It’s
absurd that the first bill during the shutdown is legislation which
punishes Americans who exercise their constitutional right to engage
in political activity,” Sanders wrote on Twitter on Monday.

Democrats
must block consideration of any bills that don’t reopen the
government. Let’s get our priorities right.”

Newly
elected Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib also criticised the proposal,
which the Senate may vote on as early as Tuesday, urging politicians
to remember that the US Constitution guarantees free speech.

They
forgot what country they represent. This is the US. where boycotting
is a right & part of our historical fight for freedom &
equality,” she wrote on Twitter.

Maybe
a refresher on our U.S.. Constitution is in order, then get back to
opening up our government instead of taking our rights away.”

The
statement provoked Marco Rubio, the Republican senator who introduced
the bill last week, to accuse the Palestinian-American congresswoman
of anti-Semitism.

This “dual loyalty” canard is a typical anti-Semitic line isn’t about freedom & equality, it’s about destroying

And if boycotting is constitutionally protected, then boycotting companies that boycott is also constitutionally protected

Tlaib
later clarified that her comment was not aimed at Jewish-Americans,
but was about Republicans’ efforts to strip citizens of their right
to freedom of expression instead of focusing on reopening the
government.

Earlier
in the day, Rubio defended the proposal, calling Sanders’ statement
a “lie”.

He
also emphasised that his proposal is legal, despite two federal court
rulings in
Kansas and Arizona last
year concluding that it is unconstitutional to force state
contractors to refrain from boycotting Israel.

Unconstitutional’

Dozens
of states have passed various forms of anti-BDS bills in recent
years, but several of these measures are currently being challenged
in courts across the US.

While
Rubio’s bill boosts local and state efforts against boycotting
Israel, it also extends to boycotts of “Israeli-controlled
territories”, effectively targeting boycotts of Israeli businesses
in the illegally occupied Palestinian West Bank and Syrian Golan
Heights.

The
proposal is named the “Combating BDS Act of 2019” after the
Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, which seeks to pressure
Israel economically and politically to end its abuses against
Palestinians.

My
bill doesn’t punish any political activity. It protects the right
of local & state govts that decide to no longer do business with
those who boycott #Israel. So boycotting #Israel is a constitutional
right, but boycotting those participating in #BDS isn’t?” Rubio
wrote on Twitter.

Rashida Tlaib
@RashidaTlaib

Sen. Rubio, it’s clear my earlier tweet was critical of U.S. Senators like yourself, who are seeking to strip Americans of their Constitutional right to free speech.

The
American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) responded to Rubio by
explaining that the First Amendment, which grants US citizens the
right to free speech, belongs to the people, not the government.

States
don’t have the ‘right’ to punish individuals for participating
in political boycotts the government doesn’t agree with, which this
bill encourages them to do,” the group said on Twitter.

Rubio’s
office did not respond to MEE’s request for comment on Monday.

Later
in the day, ACLU sent a letter to the members of the Senate, calling
on them to reject the bill, “primarily due to First Amendment
concerns”.

The
Combating BDS Act sends a clear message to Americans who engage on
issues of global importance that if they dare to disagree with their
government, they will be penalized and placed in a lesser class with
fewer opportunities,” the letter said.

That
message makes a mockery of the constitutional principle that
Americans are free to believe as they choose.”

The
Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) also called on its
supporters to contact their elected officials and urge them to reject
the bill.

This
unconstitutional bill violates the First Amendment rights of all
Americans to challenge the illegal and discriminatory actions of a
foreign government and goes against the principles of free speech on
which our country was founded,” CAIR government affairs director,
Robert McCaw, said in a statement.

Government
shutdown

Since
late December, about 25 percent of US federal agencies have been
closed because of the disagreement between Trump and Democrats over
the president’s demand to allocate $5bn for a border wall with
Mexico.

The
failure to reach an agreement has killed efforts to pass several
funding bills.

In
that context, Rubio’s anti-BDS measure has been criticised as a
distraction from the more consequential government shutdown, as well.

The
timing of the bill, dubbed S1, as the first order of business of the
new Senate in 2019, has even irked some politicians who are staunch
supporters of Israel.

In
a Twitter post, Senator Ben Cardin, a Democrat who introduced his own
anti-BDS bill in 2017,
said Senate
Majority Leader Mitch McConnell should not take up any other piece of
legislation that does not address the “crisis” of the shutdown.

The
ACLU letter also noted the concerning nature of proposing the bill at
a time when lawmakers should be trying to resolve the more pressing
issue of the shutdown.

It
is particularly alarming that the Senate is considering this bill
amidst a partial government shutdown,” it said.

The
US Campaign for Palestinian Rights provided a
sample
letter
 to
its supporters, calling on them to urge their senators to vote
against the proposed bill.

I
am especially outraged that while parts of the government remain
shutdown, the Senate would consider its most urgent act to be denying
us our First Amendment rights,” the letter reads.

==============================

(GP— This
October, Facebook and Twitter deleted the accounts of hundreds of
users, including many alternative media outlets maintained by
American users. Among those wiped out in the coordinated purge were
popular sites that scrutinized police brutality and U.S.
interventionism, like The Free Thought Project, Anti-Media, and Cop
Block, along with the pages of journalists like
Rachel
Blevins
.

Facebook claimed that
these pages had “broken our rules against spam and coordinated
inauthentic behavior.” However, sites like The Free Thought Project
were verified by Facebook and widely recognized as legitimate sources
of news and opinion. John Vibes, an independent reporter who
contributed to Free Thought,
accused Facebook
of “favoring mainstream sources and silencing alternative voices.”

In
comments published here for the first time, a neoconservative
Washington insider has apparently claimed a degree of credit for the
recent purge — and promised more takedowns in the near future.

Russia,
China, and other foreign states take advantage of our open political
system,” remarked Jamie Fly, a senior fellow and director of the
Asia program at the influential think tank the German Marshall Fund,
which is
funded
by the U.S. government and NATO
.
“They can invent stories that get repeated and spread through
different sites. So we are just starting to push back. Just this last
week Facebook began starting to take down sites. So this is just the
beginning.”

Fly
went on to complain that “all you need is an email” to set up a
Facebook or Twitter account, lamenting the sites’ accessibility to
members of the general public. He predicted a long struggle on a
global scale to fix the situation, and pointed out that to do so
would require constant vigilance.

Fly
made these stunning comments to Jeb Sprague, who is a visiting
faculty in sociology at the University of California-Santa Barbara
and co-author of this article. The two spoke during a lunch break at
conference
on Asian security
 organized
by the
Stiftung
Wissenschaft und Politik
 (SWP) in
Berlin, Germany.

In
the tweet below, Fly is the third person from the left who appears
seated at the table.

The
remarks by Fly — “we are just starting to push back” — seemed
to confirm the worst fears of the alternative online media community.
If he was to be believed, the latest purge was motivated by politics,
not spam prevention, and was driven by powerful interests hostile to
dissident views, particularly where American state violence is
concerned.

Jamie
Fly, Rise of a Neocon Cadre

Jamie
Fly is an influential foreign policy hardliner who has spent the last
year lobbying for the censorship of “fringe views” on social
media. Over the years, he has advocated for a military assault on
Iran, a
regime
change war
 on
Syria, and hiking military spending to unprecedented levels. He is
the embodiment of a neoconservative cadre.

Like
so many second-generation neocons, Fly
entered
government

by burrowing into mid-level positions in George W. Bush’s National
Security Council and Department of Defense.

In
2009, he was appointed director of the
Foreign
Policy Initiative

(FPI), a rebranded version of Bill Kristol’s Project for a New
American Century, or PNAC. The latter outfit was an umbrella group of
neoconservative activists that first made the case for an invasion of
Iraq as part of a wider project of regime change in countries that
resisted Washington’s sphere of influence.

By
2011, Fly was advancing the next phase in PNAC’s blueprint
by
clamoring for
military strikes on Iran. “More diplomacy is not an adequate
response,” he argued. A year later, Fly
urged the
US to “expand its list of targets beyond the [Iranian] nuclear
program to key command and control elements of the Republican Guard
and the intelligence ministry, and facilities associated with other
key government officials.”

Fly
soon found his way into the senate office of Marco Rubio, a
neoconservative pet project, assuming a role as his top foreign
policy advisor. Amongst other interventionist initiatives, Rubio has
taken the lead in promoting harsh economic sanctions
targeting
Venezuela
,
even advocating for a U.S.
military
assault
 on
the country. When Rubio’s 2016 presidential campaign floundered
amid a mass revolt of the Republican Party’s middle American base
against the party establishment, Fly was forced to cast about for new
opportunities.

He
found them in the paranoid atmosphere of
Russiagate that
formed soon after Donald Trump’s shock election victory.

PropOrNot
Sparks the Alternative Media Panic

A
journalistic insider’s account of the Hillary Clinton presidential
campaign, Shattered, revealed that “in the days after
the election, Hillary declined to take responsibility for her own
loss.” Her top advisers were summoned the following day, according
to the book, “to engineer the case that the election wasn’t
entirely on the up-and-up … Already, Russian hacking was the
centerpiece of the argument.”

Less
than three weeks after Clinton’s defeat, the Washington Post’s
Craig Timberg published a
dubiously
sourced report
 headlined,
“Russian propaganda effort helped spread ‘fake news.’” The
article hyped up a McCarthyite effort by a shadowy, anonymously run
organization called PropOrNot to blacklist some 200 American media
outlets as Russian “online propaganda.”

The
alternative media outfits on the
PropOrNot
blacklist
 included
some of those recently purged by Facebook and Twitter, such as The
Free Thought Project and Anti-Media. Among the
criteria
PropOrNot identified as signs of Russian propaganda were “Support
for policies like Brexit, and the breakup of the EU and Eurozone”
and “Opposition to Ukrainian resistance to Russia and Syrian
resistance to Assad.” PropOrNot called for “formal investigations
by the U.S. government” into the outlets it had blacklisted.

According
to Craig Timberg, the Washington Post correspondent who uncritically
promoted the media suppression initiative, Propornot was established
by “a nonpartisan collection of researchers with foreign policy,
military and technology backgrounds.” Timberg quoted a figure
associated with the George Washington University Center for Cyber and
Homeland Security, Andrew Weisburd, and cited a report he wrote with
his colleague, Clint Watts, on Russian meddling.

Timberg’s
piece on was PropOrNot was promoted widely by
former
top Clinton staffers
 and celebrated by
ex-Obama White House aide Dan Pfeiffer as “the biggest story in the
world.” But after a wave of stinging criticism, including in the
pages of the
New
Yorker
,
the article was amended with an editor’s note stating, “The
[Washington] Post… does not itself vouch for the validity of
PropOrNot’s findings regarding any individual media outlet.”

PropOrNot
had been seemingly exposed as a McCarthyite sham, but the concept
behind it — exposing online American media outlets as vehicles for
Kremlin “active measures” — continued to flourish.

The
Birth of the Russian Bot Tracker — with U.S. Government Money

By
August, a new, and seemingly related initiative appeared out of the
blue, this time with backing from a bipartisan coalition of
Democratic foreign policy hands and neocon Never

Trumpers
in Washington. Called the
Alliance
for Securing Democracy
 (ASD),
the outfit aimed to expose how supposed Russian Twitter bots were
infecting American political discourse with divisive narratives. It
featured a daily “
Hamilton
68

online dashboard that highlighted the supposed bot activity with
easily digestible charts. Conveniently, the site avoided naming any
of the digital Kremlin influence accounts it claimed to be tracking.

The
initiative was immediately
endorsed
by John Podesta
,
the founder of the Democratic Party think tank the Center for
American Progress, and former chief of staff of Hillary Clinton’s
2016 presidential campaign. Julia Ioffe, the Atlantic’s chief
Russiagate correspondent,
promoted the
bot tracker as “a very cool tool.”

Unlike
PropOrNot, the ASD was sponsored by one of the most respected think
tanks in Washington, the
German
Marshall Fund
,
which had been founded in 1972 to nurture the special relationship
between the US and what was then West Germany.

The
German Marshall Fund is substantially
funded
by Western governments
,
and largely reflects their foreign-policy interests. Its top two
financial sponsors, at more than $1 million per year each, are the
U.S. government’s soft-power arm the U.S. Agency for International
Development (
USAID)
and the German Foreign Office (known in German as the Auswärtiges
Amt). The U.S. State Department also provides more than half a
million dollars per year, as do the German Ministry of Economic
Cooperation and Development and the foreign affairs ministries of
Sweden and Norway. It likewise receives at least a quarter of a
million dollars per year from NATO.

The
US government and NATO are top donors to the German Marshall Fund.

Though
the German Marshall Fund did not name the donors that specifically
sponsored its Alliance for Securing Democracy initiative, it hosts a
who’s who of bipartisan national-security hardliners on the
ASD’s
advisory
council
,
providing the endeavor with the patina of credibility. They range
from neocon movement icon Bill Kristol to former Clinton foreign
policy advisor Jake Sullivan and ex-CIA director Michael Morell.

Jamie
Fly, a German Marshall Fund fellow and Asia specialist, emerged as
one of the most prolific promoters of the new Russian bot tracker in
the media. Together with Laura Rosenberger, a former foreign policy
aide to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign, Fly appeared in a series
of
interviews and
co-authored several
op-eds emphasizing
the need for a massive social media crackdown.

During
a March 2018
 interview
on C-Span
,
Fly complained that “Russian accounts” were “trying to promote
certain messages, amplify certain content, raise fringe views, pit
Americans against each other, and we need to deal with this ongoing
problem and find ways through the government, through tech companies,
through broader society to tackle this issue.”

Yet
few of the sites on PropOrNot’s blacklist, and none of the
alternative sites that were erased in the recent Facebook purge that
Fly and his colleagues take apparent credit for, were Russian
accounts. Perhaps the only infraction they could have been accused of
was publishing views that Fly and his cohorts saw as “fringe.”

What’s
more, the ASD has been forced to admit that the mass of Twitter
accounts it initially identified as “Russian bots” were not
necessarily bots — and may not have been Russian either.

I’m
Not Convinced on This Bot Thing”

A
November 2017
 investigation by
Max Blumenthal, a co-author of this article, found that the ASD’s
Hamilton 68 dashboard was the creation of “a collection of cranks,
counterterror retreads, online harassers and paranoiacs operating
with support from some of the most prominent figures operating within
the American national security apparatus.”

These
figures included the same George Washington University Center for
Cyber and Homeland Security fellows — Andrew Weisburd and Clint
Watts — that were cited as experts in the Washington Post’s
article promoting PropOrNot.

Weisburd,
who has been described as one of the brains behind the Hamilton 68
dashboard, once maintained a one-man, anti-Palestinian web monitoring
initiative that specialized in doxxing left-wing activists, Muslims
and anyone he considered “anti-American.” More recently, he has
taken to Twitter to spout off murderous and homophobic fantasies
about Glenn Greenwald, the editor of the Intercept — a publication
the ASD flagged without explanation as a vehicle for Russian
influence operations.

Watts,
for his part, has testified before Congress on several occasions
to
call on
the government to “quell information rebellions” with censorious
measures including “nutritional labels” for online media. He has
received fawning publicity from corporate media and been rewarded
with a contributor role for NBC on the basis of his supposed
expertise in ferreting out Russian disinformation.

However, under
questioning
 during
a public event by Grayzone contributor Ilias Stathatos, Watts
admitted that substantial parts of his testimony were false, and
refused to provide evidence to support some of his most colorful
claims about malicious Russian bot activity.

In
a separate interview with
Buzzfeed,
Watts appeared to completely disown the Hamilton 68 bot tracker as a
legitimate tool. “I’m not convinced on this bot thing,” Watts
confessed. He even called the narrative that he helped manufacture
“overdone,” and admitted that the accounts Hamilton 68 tracked
were not necessarily directed by Russian intelligence actors.

We
don’t even think they’re all commanded in Russia — at all. We
think some of them are legitimately passionate people that are just
really into promoting Russia,” Watts conceded.

But
these stunning admissions did little to slow the momentum of the
coming purge.

Enter
the Atlantic Council

In
his conversation with Sprague, the German Marshall Fund’s Fly
stated that he was working with the Atlantic Council in the campaign
to purge alternative media from social media platforms like Facebook.

The
Atlantic Council is another Washington-based think tank that serves
as a gathering point for neoconservatives and liberal
interventionists pushing military aggression around the globe. It
is
funded by
NATO and
repressive,
US-allied governments
 including
Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Turkey, as well as by Ukrainian oligarchs
like Victor Pynchuk.

This
May, Facebook
 announced a
partnership with the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research
Lab (DFRLab) to “identify, expose, and explain disinformation
during elections around the world.”

The
Atlantic Council’s DFRLab is notorious for its zealous
conflation of legitimate online dissent with illicit Russian
activity, embracing the same tactics as PropOrNot and the ASD.

Ben
Nimmo, a DFRLab fellow who has built his reputation on flushing out
online Kremlin influence networks,
embarked on
an embarrassing witch hunt this year that saw him misidentify several
living, breathing individuals as Russian bots or Kremlin “influence
accounts.” Nimmo’s victims included
Mariam
Susli
,
a well-known Syrian-Australian social media personality, the famed
Ukrainian concert pianist
Valentina
Lisitsa
,
and a British pensioner named Ian Shilling.

In
an interview with Sky News, Shilling delivered a
memorable
tirade
 against
his accusers. “I have no Kremlin contacts whatsoever; I do not know
any Russians, I have no contact with the Russian government or
anything to do with them,” he exclaimed. “I am an ordinary
British citizen who happens to do research on the current neocon wars
which are going on in Syria at this very moment.”

With
the latest Facebook and Twitter purges, ordinary citizens like
Shilling are being targeted in the open, and without apology. The
mass deletions of alternative media accounts illustrate how national
security hardliners from the German Marshall Fund and Atlantic
Council (and whoever was behind PropOrNot) have instrumentalized the
manufactured panic around Russian interference to generate public
support for a wider campaign of media censorship.

In
his conversation in Berlin with Sprague, Fly noted with apparent
approval that, “Trump is now pointing to Chinese interference in
the 2018 election.” As the mantra of foreign interference expands
to a new adversarial power, the clampdown on voices of dissent in
online media is almost certain to intensify.

As
Fly promised, “This is just the beginning.”

bedrijven ‘dringend aangeraden’ hun supermarktketens in Venezuela

US
Regime Change Fails in Venezuela: Military Coup or Invasion Next?

February

Written

Consortium
News

(CN) — Several
signals point to a possible military strike on Venezuela, with
high-ranking officials and influential politicians making clear that
it is a distinct possibility.

Speaking
at his alma mater, the University of Texas, on February 1, Secretary
of State Tillerson
suggested a
potential military coup in in the country. Tillerson
then
visited
allied Latin American countries
 urging
regime change and more economic sanctions on Venezuela. Tillerson is
also reportedly considering banning the processing or sale of
Venezuelan oil in the United States and is discouraging other
countries from buying Venezuelan oil.

In
a series of tweets, Senator
Marco
Rubio
,
the Republican from Florida, where many Venezuelan oligarchs live,
openly called for a military coup in Venezuela. “The world would
support the Armed Forces in
#Venezuela if
they decide to protect the people & restore democracy by removing
a dictator,” the former presidential candidate
tweeted.

How
absurd — remove an elected president with a military coup to
restore democracy? Does that pass the straight face test? This
refrain of Rubio and Tillerson seems to be the nonsensical public
position of U.S. policy.

The
U.S. has been
seeking
regime change
 in
Venezuela since Hugo Chavez was elected in 1998. Trump
joined
Presidents Obama and Bush
 before
him in continuing efforts to change the government and put in place a
U.S.-friendly oligarch government.

They
came closest in
 2002
when a military coup removed Chavez.
 The
Commander-in-Chief of the Venezuelan military announced Chavez had
resigned and
Pedro
Carmona
,
of the Venezuelan Chamber of Commerce, became interim president.
Carmona dissolved the National Assembly and Supreme Court and
declared the Constitution void. The people surrounded the
presidential palace and seized television stations, Carmona resigned
and fled to Colombia. Within 47 hours, civilians and the military
restored Chavez to the presidency.
The
coup was a turning point
 that
strengthened the Bolivarian Revolution, showed people could defeat a
coup and exposed the US and oligarchs.

U.S.
Regime Change Tactics Have Failed In Venezuela

The
U.S. and oligarchs continue their efforts to reverse the Bolivarian
Revolution. The United States has a long history of regime change
around the world and has tried all of its regime change tools in
Venezuela. So far they have failed.

Economic
War

Destroying
the Venezuelan economy has been an ongoing campaign by the US and
oligarchs. It is
reminiscent
of the US coup in Chile
which
ended the presidency of Salvador Allende. To create the environment
for the Chilean coup, President Nixon ordered the CIA to “make
the economy scream.”

Henry
Kissinger devised the coup noting a billion dollars of investment
were at stake. He also feared the “the insidious model effect” of
the example of Chile leading to other countries breaking from the
United States and capitalism. Kissinger’s top deputy at the
National Security Council, Viron Vaky, opposed the coup saying,
“What we propose is patently a violation of our own principles and
policy tenets .… If these principles have any meaning, we normally
depart from them only to meet the gravest threat … our survival.”

These
objections hold true regarding recent US coups, including in
Venezuela and Honduras, Ukraine and Brazil, among others. Allende
died in the coup and
wrote
his last words to the people of Chile
,
especially the workers, “Long live the people! Long live the
workers!” He was replaced by Augusto Pinochet,
a
brutal and violent dictator
.

For
decades the
US
has been fighting an economic war
,
“making the economy scream,” in Venezuela.

Wealthy
Venezuelans have been conducting economic sabotage aided by the US
with sanctions and other tactics. This includes
hoarding
food, supplies and other necessities
 in
warehouses or in Colombia while Venezuelan markets are bare. The
scarcity is used to fuel protests, e.g. “The March of the Empty
Pots,” a carbon copy of marches in Chile before the September 11,
1973 coup. Economic warfare has escalated
through
Obama
 and under
Trump
,
with Tillerson now urging economic sanctions on oil.

President
Maduro recognized the economic hardship but also said
sanctions
open up the opportunity for a new era of independence
 and
“begins the stage of post-domination by the United States, with
Venezuela again at the center of this struggle for dignity and
liberation.” The second-in-command of the Socialist Party,
Diosdado
Cabello, said,
 “[if
they] apply sanctions, we will apply elections.”

Opposition
Protests

Another
common US regime change tool is supporting opposition protests.
The
Trump
administration renewed regime change operations
 in
Venezuela and the anti-Maduro protests, which began under Obama, grew
more violent. The opposition protests included barricades,
snipers and murders as well as widespread injuries. When police
arrested those using violence, the US claimed Venezuela opposed free
speech and protests.

The
opposition tried to use the crack down against violence to achieve
the U.S. tactic of  dividing the military. The
U.S.
and western media ignored opposition violence
 and
blamed the Venezuelan government instead. Violence became so extreme
it looked like the
opposition
was pushing Venezuela into a Syrian-type civil war
.
Instead, opposition violence backfired on them.

Violent
protests are part of U.S. regime change repertoire. This was
demonstrated in the
U.S.
coup in Ukraine
,
where the U.S. spent $5 billion to organize government opposition
including
U.S.
and EU funding violent protesters
.
This tactic was used in early US coups like the
1953
Iran coup
 of
Prime Minister Mossadegh.
The
U.S. has admitted
 organizing
this
coup
that ended Iran’s brief experience with democracy
.
Like Venezuela, a key reason for the Iran coup was control of the
nation’s oil.

Funding
Opposition

There
has been
massive
U.S. investment in creating opposition to the Venezuelan
government
.
Tens of millions of dollars have been openly spent through USAID, the
National Endowment for Democracy and other related US regime change
agencies. It is unknown how much the CIA has spent from its secret
budget, but the
CIA
has also been involved in Venezuela.
 Current
CIA director, Mike
Pompeo,
said

he is “hopeful there can be a transition in Venezuela.”

The United
States has also educated leaders of opposition movements
,
e.g.
Leopoldo
López
 was
educated at private schools in the US, including the CIA-associated
Kenyon College. He was groomed at the Harvard Kennedy School of
Government and made repeated visits to the regime change agency, the
National Republican Institute.

Elections

While
the US calls Venezuela a dictatorship, it is in fact a strong
democracy with an excellent voting system. Election observers monitor
every election.

In
2016, the economic crisis led to the opposition winning a majority in
the National Assembly. One of their first acts was to
pass
an amnesty law
.
The law described 17 years of crimes including violent felonies and
terrorism committed by the opposition. It was an admission of crimes
back to the 2002 coup and through 2016. The law demonstrated violent
treason against Venezuela. One month later, the Supreme Court of
Venezuela
ruled
the amnesty law was unconstitutional
.
U.S. media, regime change advocates and anti-Venezuela human rights
groups
attacked
the Supreme Court decision
,
showing their alliance with the admitted criminals.

Years
of violent protests and regime change attempts, and then admitting
their crimes in an amnesty bill, have caused those opposed to the
Bolivarian Revolution to lose power and become unpopular.  In
three recent elections Maduro’s party
won
regional,
 local and
the
Constituent
Assembly
 elections.

The
electoral commission announced the
presidential
election will be held on April 22
.
Maduro will run for re-election with the United Socialist Party.
Opposition leaders such as Henry Ramos and Henri Falcon have
expressed interest in running, but the
opposition
has not decided whether to participate
Henrique
Capriles, who narrowly lost to Maduro in the last election, was
banned from running for office

because of irregularities in his campaign, including taking foreign
donations.
Capriles has
been a leader of the violent protests. When his ban was announced he
called for protests to remove Maduro from office. Also banned
was
Leopoldo
Lopez
,
another leader of the violent protests who is under house
arrest
serving
a thirteen year sentence for inciting violence
.

Now,
the United States says it will not recognize the presidential
election and urges a military coup. For two years, the opposition
demanded presidential elections, but now it is unclear whether they
will participate. They know they are unpopular and Maduro is likely
to be re-elected.

Is
War Against Venezuela Coming?

A
military coup faces challenges in Venezuela as the people, including
the military, are well educated about US imperialism. Tillerson
openly urging a military coup makes it more difficult.

The
government and opposition recently negotiated a peace settlement
entitled “Democratic Coexistence Agreement for Venezuela.”
They
agreed
on all of the issues
 including
ending economic sanctions, scheduling elections and more.
They
agreed on the date of the next presidential election.
 It
was originally planned for March, but in a concession to the
opposition, it was  rescheduled for the end of April.
Maduro
signed the agreement
 even
though the
opposition
did not attend
 the
signing ceremony. They backed out after Colombian President Santos,
who was meeting with Secretary Tillerson, called and told them not to
sign.
Maduro
will now make the agreement a public issue
 by
allowing the people of Venezuela to sign it.

Not
recognizing elections and urging a military coup are bad enough, but
more disconcerting is that
Admiral
Kurt Tidd, head of Southcom, held a closed door meeting in
Colombia
 after
Tillerson’s visit. The topic was “regional destabilization” and
Venezuela was a focus.

A
military attack on Venezuela from its Colombian and Brazilian borders
is not far fetched. In January,
the
NY Times asked
,
“Should the US military invade Venezuela?” President
Trump
said the US is considering US military force
 against
Venezuela. His chief of staff, John Kelly, was formerly the general
in charge of Southcom.
Tidd
has claimed the crisis
,
created in large part by the economic war against Venezuela, requires
military action for humanitarian reasons.

War
preparations are already underway
 in
Colombia, which plays the role of Israel for the US in Latin America.
The coup government in Brazil,
increased
its military budget 36 percent
,
and participated in
Operation:
America United
,
the largest joint military exercise in Latin American history. It
was
one
of four military exercises by the US
 with
Brazil, Colombia and Peru
 in
Latin America in 2017. The US
Congress
ordered the Pentagon to develop military contingencies
 for
Venezuela in the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act.

While
there is
opposition
to US military bases
James
Patrick Jordan explains, on our radio show,
 the
US has military bases in Colombia and the Caribbean and military
agreements with countries in the region; and therefore, Venezuela is
already surrounded.

The
United States is targeting Venezuela because the Bolivarian
Revolution provides an example against U.S. imperialism. An
invasion of Venezuela will become another war-quagmire that kills
innocent Venezuelans, U.S. soldiers and others over control of oil.
People in the United States who support the self-determination of
countries should show solidarity with Venezuelans, expose the U.S.
agenda and publicly denounce regime change. We need to educate people
about what is really happening in Venezuela to overcome the false
media coverage.

Has
The American Establishment Opted for Thermo-Nuclear War?

By
Paul Craig Roberts

February

Information
Clearing House

– If you want to be an American TV talking head or a Western
presstitute, you are required to be braindead and
integrity-challenged like Bill O’Reilly, CNN, MSNBC, and the New
York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and all the rest.

In
an interview with President Donald Trump, O’Reilly said: “Putin
is a killer.”

O’Reilly
is indifferent to the fact that thermo-nuclear war is a killer of
planet Earth. For O’Reilly, President Trump’s desire to normalize
relations with Russia is an indication that the President of the US
is comfortable making deals with killers, as if America’s last
three presidents have not been mass killers comfortable with their
destruction in whole or part of many countries and millions of
peoples.

President
Trump’s response to O’Reilly’s was: “We’ve got a lot of
killers. What do you think – our country’s so innocent?”

The
only thing wrong with President Trump’s response is that it
implicitly accepts that Putin is no different from Obama, George W.
Bush, and Bill Clinton. Yet there is no evidence that Putin is a
“killer.” This accusation is an assertion from those who prosper
from having a “Russian threat” to keep the money and power
flowing to themselves.

As
Finian Cunningham shows, Trump should have reprimanded O’Reilly for
his unsupported and undiplomatic accusation against the president of
a country with which President Trump hopes to restore normal
relations.
http://www.strategic-culture.org/news/2017/02/06/trump-apology-for-killer-putin-wrongheaded.html

President
Trump’s statement of an obvious fact was quickly branded “defense
of a killer” by congressional Republicans, Hillary Democrats, the
liberal, progressive, left-wing, and the Western presstitutes.

Even
online sites, such as politico.com, jumped in to criticize “Donald
Trump’s defense of Vladimir Putin’s homicidal history.”
Allegations of “Putin’s homicidal history” are astonishing
after 24 years of Washington’s genocide against Muslins in
Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Yemen, Pakistan, and Syria, and
non-Muslims in Yugoslavia and the Russian regions of Ukraine.
Washington ranks as one of the worst mass murderers in human history,
but the Western presstitutes brand Putin as the one who is homicidal.

Listen
to these members of Congress who represent Americans in Washington:

Senate
Majorithy Leader Mitch McConnel (R, Ky) said referring to the thrice
elected President of Russia: “He’s a thug.” McConnel has gone
along with Washington’s mass murder of peoples for 15 years, and
this accomplice to mass murder said that Washington’s murder of
countless millions, which have sent refugees all over the Western
world, are not evidence against America. In his response to Trump’s
statement, McConnel actually said: “We don’t operate in any way
the way the Russians do. I think there’s a clear distinction here
that all Americans understand, and I would not have characterized it
that
way.” http://www.politico.com/story/2017/02/republicans-denounce-trumps-defense-of-killer-putin-234665

The
Republican senator from Florida, Marco Rubio, said: “We are not the
same as Putin.” Of course we aren’t. We are mass murderers.

The
Rebublican senator from Nebraska, Ben Sasse, said, and this is a
level of ignorance hard to believe even for Americans, that “Putin
is an enemy of political dissent. The U.S. celebrates political
dissent and the right for people to argue free from violence about
places or ideas that are in conflict [as at Cal Berkeley]. There is
no moral equivalency between the United States of America, the
greatest freedom loving nation in the history of the world, and the
murderous thugs that are in Putin’s defense of his cronyism.”

The
Wall Street Journal’s (WSJ) Bret Stephens said: “Trump puts US on moral
par with Putin’s Russia. Never in history has a President slandered
his country like this.”

No
Bret, you have it backwards. No US president has ever slandered
Russia like this. There is no moral equivalency between Washington
and Moscow. Washington is totally devoid of all morality. Russia is
not. It is not Russia that has murdered, maimed, and displaced
peoples in at least 9 countries in the last 15 years, sending
refugees all over the Western world, some of whom no doubt bear
legitimate grudges.

Trump’s
vice president, Mike Pence, rushed to tell NBC that Trump didn’t
mean that Washington is not morally superior to Putin’s Russia. Of
course the US is morally superior to everyone. The millions of
peoples we kill and dislocate are proof of our unquestioned moral
superiority. Every time we bomb a wedding, a funeral of the wedding
guests, a children’s soccer game, innumerable hospitals and medical
centers, schools, farms, public transportation, we exceptional and
indispensable Americans are demonstrating our moral superiority over
the Earth. Only the morally superior can commit vast crimes against
humanity without being held accountable.

Normal
relations with Russia do not seem to be in the cards. The
demonization and lies will continue. The New Cold War is too
important to the ruling establishment, and to the members of the
House and Senate who are dependent on military/security campaign
donations, for Trump to be allowed to normalize relations with
Russia.

Everything
that Reagan and Gorbachev achieved has been undone. The material
interest of a few has again placed humanity at risk.

The
greatest freedom loving nation in the history of the world” can’t
even have a debate about it, because a debate is Putin apologetics
and moral equivalency.
