was……

Ocasio-Cortez

Why
Do Our Heroes Always Let Us Down?

Democratic
congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is drawing fire from
the antiwar left, and not for the first, second or third time. The
same leftist contingent which has been energizing Ocasio-Cortez’s
campaign and elevating her to the public spotlight has been voicing
increasing concerns about her antiwar platform
temporarily
vanishing
 from
her campaign website, about her
walking
back from her position
 on
the Israeli government’s massacring of Palestinian protesters with
sniper fire, about her weirdly hawkish criticism of the GOP as being
weak
on national security
”,
and her deference to the
establishment
Russia narrative
.

And
now, as
multiple outlets have documented in
articles released in the last few hours, many of Ocasio-Cortez’s
supporters have been upset with a statement she made praising the
recently deceased warmongering psychopath John McCain and his
blood-soaked legacy.

John
McCain’s legacy represents an unparalleled example of human decency
and American service,” tweeted the candidate upon McCain’s death,
which, for anyone who cares about the late Arizona
senator’s
relentless
push
 to
inflict
military
violence
 around
the world at every opportunity, is incredibly offensive. McCain was
easily the single most virulent warmonger on Capitol Hill, so
praising him and his legacy as exemplary of human decency necessarily
clashes with the “Peace Economy” platform that
has
had
 so
many of Ocasio-Cortez’s supporters
so
excited
.

John McCain’s legacy represents an unparalleled example of human decency and American service.

As an intern, I learned a lot about the power of humanity in government through his deep friendship with Sen. Kennedy.

He meant so much, to so many. My prayers are with his family.

Washington Post

From The Post’s Editorial Board: John McCain, the irreplaceable American https://wapo.st/2PBXuix

What
remains of the American left (and for my right-wing readers I here
mean the actual anti-war, socialist left, not the Hillary Clinton
“Make sure we refer to everyone on our drone kill list by their
preferred gender pronouns” corporatist Left™ that Americans are
permitted to support) has become very suspicious of anyone who rises
to a position of leadership among their ranks, especially anyone who
appears to lend legitimacy to the profoundly corrupt Democratic
Party. And understandably so; being a DemEnter progressive is a
nonstop lesson in disappointment, heartache and betrayal. Door after
door after door gets slammed on all attempts to advance your
political agendas, and if you find someone who seems like he might
maybe be able to sneak some health in between the cracks, he turns
around and helps
sell
America the new cold war
 with
Russia.

This
has been a set pattern for a long time now. I often
share
this video clip
 from
eight years ago when the progressives who had hoped that the Obama
administration would oppose warmongering and fight for economic
justice were coming to the conclusion that they had been duped yet
again by the “hope and change” song and dance. The term
“three-dimensional chess”, a term you’ll always see supporters
of a given political figure start using when their hero begins
capitulating to establishment interests, is used scornfully in the
clip. It happens on either side of the political aisle; I see
Trump
supporters do it too
 when
I point out the many ways in which he is continuing and expanding the
Orwellian neoconservative policies of his predecessors.

Caitlin Johnstone@caitoz

Replying to @Inverte30470345 and 2 others

Trump supporters claim his nonstop establishment capitulations are chess, too. And Obama’s supporters claimed his nonstop establishment capitulations were chess as well. Now you’re saying the exact same thing about @Ocasio2018. https://youtu.be/vVX8QihFhZA

What’s
up with that? Why do our heroes always fail us? Why does everyone we
elevate to fight the oppression machine always end up becoming a cog
in that very machine? Is there a lesson here we’re meant to be
learning?

I
think there is. Out of the constant rise and fall of hope and then
disappointment, over and over the lesson is that we aren’t going to
get a savior. We can keep looking for one and crowdsurfing them to
the frontlines, but each pedestalling will inevitably fail. We will
be constantly disappointed by the choices of humans on an individual
basis. The second coming ain’t coming to save us unless it’s
coming from within, and within all of us.

Every
few days I get a comment from a reader who is deeply disappointed in
my choices. “I can’t believe you’ve gone and said such a
thing,” they say. “To think, I used to trust you! You were my
hero!” And I always want to shout back, “Well, that was a bit
dumb, who told you to do that?? Who told you I was interested in
being anyone’s hero?”

And
I’m truly not. I’ve got exactly zero interest in being anyone’s
hero or leader or guru or anything like that; I’m just some
potty-mouthed bogan with a few ideas and a Medium account, and I like
it that way. I don’t have any special powers and if you find my
thoughts resonate with yours, great, but I always want you to put
your own gut before my ramblings. All I’m ever really doing here is
pointing out again and again in different ways how your own best
guess as to what’s going on in the world is always going to be
superior to the information being spoon fed to you by the paid
deceivers and manipulators of the mass media. If people could simply
shift to trusting themselves and their own inner sense-maker more
than the voices of perceived authority in their lives and on their
digital screens, our species could very quickly move into health and
harmony, because we’d no longer be streamlined into supporting the
unwholesome agendas of an elite class of plutocrats.

And
the longer I look at this thing the more clear it becomes that that
really is our only shot. It sounds a bit kooky to say that the only
way out of the oppressive Orwellian status quo that is driving us
toward war and ecocide is a mass shift in human consciousness, but I
insist that it’s far less crazy than the idea that we can solve our
problems using political solutions while maintaining the relationship
with thought and narrative that our species currently has.

Whenever
you try to debate a devout free market capitalist by pointing to the
current system’s failures, they’ll invariably tell you that the
current system isn’t true capitalism, that due to corporatism and
the influences of corrupt governmental power, true capitalism hasn’t
yet been tried. When you try to debate a socialist by pointing to the
failures of nations which carry that label you get the same argument;
those were corrupt, top heavy perversions of the socialist ideology,
and true socialism hasn’t been tried yet.

And
both are correct: neither political solution to our society’s
dilemmas has ever been tried in its pure form. And why is that?
Ultimately, it’s because humanity remains a fearful species which
latches onto abstract mental narratives in order to maintain a sense
of control over the fate of the conceptual self they
believe
themselves to be
,
and those narratives can then be
manipulated
by more clever humans
.
Happens again and again; systems designed to help humanity give way
to the manipulations of the powerful for the benefit of the powerful,
because we are too easy to manipulate.

How Humanity Could Become Impossible To Propagandize

I’ve been writing a lot about how the ability to control public narratives is the only real power in this world, and how the need of the…

medium.com

So
in the cases of both true free market capitalism and true socialism,
the problem isn’t necessarily that those systems don’t work (who
knows, haven’t tried them yet), it’s that humanity hasn’t yet
moved into a sufficiently wholesome relationship with power and
narrative to be able to implement them. Complaining that your system
hasn’t been implemented correctly is therefore actually just
complaining that humanity has not yet experienced a global shift in
consciousness.

But
if we can make such a shift, will our old models even be useful in
the new paradigm? Isn’t it kind of like a two-dimensional character
trying to design city plans for a three-dimension civilization they
can’t even imagine? How much relevance would the manifesto of a
nineteenth century German philosopher or the ideas of long dead
Austrian economists have to a twenty-first century world in which
humans don’t move the way they used to and are not motivated by the
same things they once were?

This
is why I don’t make much of a fuss about one ideological model or
the other being the right and true one. A world in which everyone
gets what they need and we aren’t killing each other or our
ecosystem anymore is obviously something we all want, but I don’t
see any way to get there by picking heroes and sending them toward
the top of a power structure that has been deliberately designed to
funnel power upward and banish anyone who obstructs that movement.

Humanity Is Deciding If It Will Evolve Or Die

I
no longer jump on bandwagons for the same reason I don’t go around
babbling about “sheep dogs” and aggressively trying to tear down
anti-establishment heroes who aren’t being anti-establishment
enough: if you put someone on a pedestal, eventually you’re going
to have to knock them off of it, because the solution isn’t in
them. It’s in each of us.

How
can we overthrow our oppressors if we haven’t overthrown our inner
oppressor as well? How can we shrug off the fear-soaked narratives of
the propaganda machine if we haven’t detached from the anxious
self-talk of our babbling inner narrator that seeks to dictate our
entire attention? We can turn off all the screens in our lives that
seek to take over our authority, but it’s the screen in our minds
which holds our attention that we have to turn off as well.

And
that will necessarily move us in a far more harmonious way. We will
look like a whole different species. From how I see it now, political
solutions are inherently top-down, competitive and divisive, and what
we are shooting for is a much more organically collaborative
crowd-sourced approach. As we get healthier, we’ll see solutions
come together in a distributed, improvisational way from collections
of people who aren’t interested in getting noticed, they just want
to get it done.

And
there are plenty of people like that already. The Bernie campaign
brought together huge swathes of them. We are going to see that
across all sectors, in science, technology and the arts as people put
aside our weird egoic desire for the separating effects of fame and
fortune for the joy of making something beautiful, helpful or healthy
together, simply for the thrill of accomplishing something bigger
than ourselves. The old dinosaur notions of pinning down ideas with
patents and so on will be seen clearly for what they are — an
attempt by individual egos to colonize inspiration that ultimately
inhibits human thriving. Just as we learn to stop trusting the
individual ego in others to save us, we will stop trusting it in
ourselves, and increasingly we will hand over our internal control to
the greater part of our consciousness that does not seek to control,
define, claim and deflect, but rather draws from a wisdom that often
eludes narration but creates harmoniously.

We
are the helpers. We’ve always been here, but until now we’ve been
co-opted by manipulators into manufacturing consent for their sick
agendas. Very rarely has a helper found a helper to help. Very rarely
have two people who only want to work in the highest interest and not
self-interest come together to make something, let alone a group of
them. As we begin to really see how manipulators move and they start
to pop up on our screens like a fly on white paper, the helpers will
become obvious as well. We can start to trust our gut again about who
and where to put our energy, and out of those new collaborations,
beautiful inspired solutions will be born into the world.

Truth

“Everything I just said is self-evident and immediately verifiable in your own present experience here and now. Truth – Caitlin Johnstone – Medium

What do you know for certain? For absolute certain?

medium.com

Put
to one side the anxiety-soaked stories your mind creates and deal
with what’s in the here and now, and keep gently bringing yourself
back to the reality of your feet on the floor and the air moving
through your lungs. Every reset back into peace with your
surroundings creates a space where inspiration can come in. This
simple internal act of rebellion from obedience to the
voice-that-is-me will have far-reaching consequences in the outer
world as we draw back subservience from the outer voices of
authority, and bring it back into ourselves.

I
know that’s not nearly as cool as storming the barracks with flags
and rebel songs and the image of our hero inked into our skin, but
we’ve tried that before, and we just got more of the same. Every
hero we elevate turns to smoke, and every door we’ve tried is
closed except this one. So let’s open it and see what happens.

De Russiagate samenzweringstheorie dient de machthebbers………

Alan

How
the Russiagate Conspiracy Benefits Those in Power

July
27, 2018 at 1:55 pm

Written
by
Alan
Macleod

(FAIR) — To
the shock of many, Donald Trump won the 2016 presidential elections,
becoming the 45th president of the United States. Not least shocked
were corporate media, and the political establishment more generally;
the Princeton Election Consortium
confidently
predicted
 an
over 99 percent chance of a Clinton victory, while
MSNBC’s
Rachel Maddow (
10/17/16)
said it could be a “Goldwater-style landslide.”

The
election of Donald Trump came as a shock to many
(Independent,
11/5/16).

Indeed,
Hillary Clinton and her team
actively
attempted
 to
secure a Trump primary victory, assured that he would be the easiest
candidate to beat. The Podesta emails
show that
her team considered even before the primaries that associating Trump
with Vladimir Putin and Russia would be a winning strategy and
employed the tactic throughout 2016 and beyond.

With
Clinton
claiming,
“Putin would rather have a puppet as president,” Russia was by
far the most discussed topic during the presidential debates
(
FAIR.org10/13/16),
easily eclipsing healthcare, terrorism, poverty and inequality. Media
seized upon the theme, with Paul Krugman (
New
York Times
7/22/16)
asserting Trump would be a “
Siberian candidate,”
while ex-CIA Director Michael Hayden (
Washington
Post
5/16/16)
claimed Trump would be Russia’s “useful fool.”

The
day after the election, Jonathan Allen’s book Shattered detailed,
Clinton’s team decided that the proliferation of Russian-sponsored
“fake news” online was the primary reason for their loss.

Within
weeks, the
Washington
Post
 (11/24/16)
was publicizing the website
PropOrNot.com,
which purports to help users differentiate sources as fake or
genuine, as an invaluable tool in the battle against fake news
(
FAIR.org12/1/1612/8/16).
The website soberly informs its readers that you see news sources
critiquing the “mainstream media,” the EU, NATO, Obama, Clinton,
Angela Merkel or other centrists are a telltale sign of Russian
propaganda. It also claims that when news sources argue against
foreign intervention and war with Russia, that’s evidence that you
are reading Kremlin-penned fake news.

The
Washington Post (
11/24/16)
was one of the first media outlets to blame the election results on
Russian “fake news.”

PropOrNot
claims it has identified over 200 popular websites that “routinely
peddle…Russian propaganda.” Included in the list were Wikileaks,
Trump-supporting right-wing websites like InfoWars and
the Drudge Report, libertarian outlets like the Ron
Paul Institute
and Antiwar.com, and
award-winning anti-Trump (but also Clinton-critical) left-wing sites
like TruthDig and Naked Capitalism. Thus
it was uniquely news sources that did not lie in the fairway between
Clinton Democrats and moderate Republicans that were tarred as
propaganda.

PropOrNot
calls for an FBI investigation into the news sources listed. Even its
creators see the resemblance to a new McCarthyism, as it appears as
frequently
asked question
 on
their website. (They say it is not McCarthyism, because “we are not
accusing anyone of lawbreaking, treason, or ‘being a member of the
Communist Party.’”) However, this new McCarthyism does not stem
from the conservative right like before, but from the establishment
center.

That
the list is so evidently flawed and its creators refuse to reveal
their identities or funding did not stop the issue becoming one of
the most discussed in mainstream circles. Media talk of fake news
sparked organizations like GoogleFacebookBing and YouTube to
change their algorithms, ostensibly to combat it.

However,
one major effect of the change has been to hammer progressive outlets
that challenge the status quo. The
Intercept reported a
19 percent reduction in
Google search
traffic,
AlterNet 63 percent
and
Democracy
Now!
36 percent. Reddit and Twitter deleted
thousands of accounts, while in what came to be called the
“AdPocalypse,”
YouTube began
demonetizing videos from independent creators like
Majority
Report
 and
the
Jimmy
Dore Show
 on
controversial political topics like environmental protests, war and
mass shootings. (In contrast, corporate outlets like
CNN did
not have their content on those subjects demonetized.) Journalists
that questioned aspects of the Russia narrative, like Glenn Greenwald
and Aaron Maté, were accused of being agents of the Kremlin
(
Shadowproof7/9/18).

The
effect has been to pull away the financial underpinnings of
alternative media that question the corporate state and capitalism in
general, and to reassert corporate control over communication,
something that had been loosened during the election in particular.
It also impels liberal journalists to prove their loyalty by
employing sufficiently bellicose and anti-Russian rhetoric, lest they
also be tarred as Kremlin agents.

Thomas
Friedman (Morning Joe,
2/14/18)
pointedly compared email hacking to events that the US responded to
with major wars.

When
it was reported in February that 13 Russian trolls had been indicted
by a US grand jury for sharing and promoting pro-Trump and
anti-Clinton memes on
Facebook,
the response was a general uproar. Multiple senior political figures
declared it an “act of war.” Clinton herself described Russian
interference as a “
cyber
9/11
,”
while Thomas Friedman said that it was a “
Pearl
Harbor–scale event
.”
Morgan Freeman’s viral video, produced by Rob Reiner’s Committee
to Investigate Russia, summed up the outrage:  “We have been
attacked,” the actor
 declared;
“We are at war with Russia.” Liberals declared Trump’s refusal
to react in a sufficiently aggressive manner further proof he was
Putin’s puppet.

The
McCarthyist wave swept over other politicians that challenged the
liberal center. Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein refused
to endorse the Russia narrative, leading mainstream figures like
Rachel Maddow to
insinuate she
was a Kremlin stooge as well. After news broke that Stein’s
connection to Russia was being officially investigated, top Clinton
staffer Zac Petkanas
 announced:

Jill
Stein is a Russian agent.

Jill
Stein is a Russian agent.

Jill
Stein is a Russian agent.

Jill
Stein is a Russian agent.

Jill
Stein is a Russian agent.

Jill
Stein is a Russian agent.

Jill
Stein is a Russian agent.

Jill
Stein is a Russian agent.

Commentary”
that succinctly summed up the political atmosphere.

In
contrast, Bernie Sanders has consistently and explicitly endorsed the
Russiagate theory,
claiming it
is “clear to everyone (except Donald Trump) that Russia was deeply
involved in the 2016 election and intends to be involved in 2018.”
Despite his stance, Sanders has also been constantly presented as
another Russian agent, with the
Washington
Post
(11/12/17)
asking its readers, “When Russia interferes with the 2020 election
on behalf of Democratic nominee Bernie Sanders, how will liberals
respond?” The message is clear: The progressive wave rising across
America is and will be a consequence of Russia, not of the failures
of the system, nor of the Democrats.

Outlets
like Slate (
5/11/18)
warned of a sinister connection between Black Lives Matter and
Russia.

It
is not just politicians who have been smeared as Russian agents,
witting or unwitting; virtually every major progressive movement
challenging the system is increasingly dismissed in the same way.
Multiple media outlets,
including
CNN (6/29/18), Slate (5/11/18), Vox (4/11/18)
and the
New
York Times
 (2/16/18),
have produced articles linking Black Lives Matter to the Kremlin,
insinuating the outrage over racist police brutality is another
Russian psyop.
 Others claimed
Russia funded the riots in Ferguson and that Russian
trolls
promoted the
Standing Rock environmental protests.

Meanwhile,
Democratic insider
 Neera
Tanden
 retweeted
a description of Chelsea Manning as a “Russian stooge,” writing
off her campaign for the Senate as “the Kremlin paying the extreme
left to swing elections. Remember that.” Thus corporate media are
promoting the idea that any challenge to the establishment is likely
a Kremlin-funded astroturf effort.

The
tactic has spread to Europe as well. After the poisoning of Russian
double agent Sergei Skripal, the UK government immediately blamed
Russia and imposed sanctions (without publicly presenting evidence).
Jeremy Corbyn, the pacifist, leftist leader of the Labour Party, was
uncharacteristically bellicose,
asserting,
“The Russian authorities must be held to account on the basis of
the evidence and our response must be both decisive and
proportionate.”

The
British press was outraged—at Corbyn’s insufficient jingoism.
The
Sun‘s
front page (
3/15/18)
attacked him as “Putin’s Puppet,” while the
Daily
Mail
(3/15/18)
went with “Corbyn the Kremlin Stooge.” As with Sanders, the fact
that Corbyn endorsed the official narrative didn’t keep him from
being attacked, showing that the conspiratorial mindset seeing Russia
behind everything has little to do with evidence-based reality, and
is increasingly a tool to demonize the establishment’s political
enemies.

The
Atlantic Council
 published
a report
 claiming
Greek political parties Syriza and Golden Dawn were not expressions
of popular frustration and disillusionment, but “the Kremlin’s
Trojan horses,” undermining democracy in its birthplace. Providing
scant evidence, the report went on to link virtually every major
European political party challenging the center, from right or left,
to Putin.

From
Britian’s UKIP to Spain’s Podemos to Italy’s Five Star
Movement, all are charged with being under one man’s control. It is
this council that
Facebook announced it
was partnering with to help promote “trustworthy” news and weed
out “untrustworthy” sources (
FAIR.org5/21/18),
as its CEO Mark Zuckerberg met with representatives from some of the
largest corporate outlets, like the
New
York Times
CNN and News
Corp
,
to help develop a system to control what content we see on the
website.

We
are at war,” Morgan Freeman
assures us
on behalf of the Committee to Investigate Russia.

The
utility of this wave of suspicion is captured in Freeman’s
aforementioned
video.
After asserting that “for 241 years, our democracy has been a
shining example to the world of what we can all aspire to”—a
tally that would count nearly a century of chattel slavery and almost
another hundred years of de jure racial disenfranchisement—the
actor explains that “Putin uses social media to spread propaganda
and false information, he convinces people in democratic societies to
distrust their media, their political process.”

The
obvious implication is that the political process and media ought to
be trusted, and would be trusted were it not for Putin’s
propaganda. It was not the failures of capitalism and the deep
inequalities it created that led to widespread popular resentment and
movements on both left and right pressing for radical change across
Europe and America, but Vladimir Putin himself. In other words,
“America is already great.”

For
the Democrats, Russiagate allows them to ignore calls for change and
not scrutinize why they lost to the most unpopular presidential
candidate in history. Since Russia hacked the election, there is no
need for introspection, and certainly no need to accommodate the
Sanders wing or to engage with progressive challenges from activists
on the left, who are Putin’s puppets anyway.

The
party can continue on the same course, painting over the deep cracks
in American society. Similarly, for centrists in Europe, under threat
from both left and right, the Russia narrative allows them to sow
distrust among the public for any movement challenging the dominant
order.

For
the state, Russiagate has encouraged liberals to forego their
faculties and develop a state-worshiping, conspiratorial mindset in
the face of a common, manufactured enemy. Liberal trust in
institutions like the FBI has
markedly
increased
 since
2016, while liberals also now espouse a neocon foreign policy in
Syria, Ukraine and other regions, with many supporting the vast
increases in the US military budget and attacking Trump from the
right.

For
corporate media, too, the disciplining effect of the Russia narrative
is highly useful, allowing them to reassert control over the means of
communication under the guise of preventing a Russian “fake news”
infiltration. News sources that challenge the establishment are
censored, defunded or deranked, as corporate sources stoke mistrust
of them. Meanwhile, it allows them to portray themselves as arbiters
of truth. This strategy has had some success, with
Democrats’
trust in media
 increasing
since the election.

None
of this is to say that Russia does not strive to influence other
countries’ elections, a tactic that the United States has employed
even more frequently (
NPR12/22/18).
Yet the extent to which the story has dominated the US media to the
detriment of other issues is a remarkable testament to its utility
for those in power.

Watchdog Condemns DNC Lawsuit Against WikiLeaks as Severe Threat to
Free Press

May

Written
by
Jake
Johnson

(CD— As
President Donald Trump continues to wage war on journalism with
violent
anti-press rhetoric
,”
the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) published a scathing
analysis on Tuesday arguing that the Democratic National
Committee’s
recent
lawsuit
 against
WikiLeaks could set the stage for even more alarming attacks on press
freedom by empowering the U.S. government to penalize media outlets
that publish leaked information.

Citing
the concerns expressed by numerous First Amendment experts and
journalists, CPJ’s Avi Asher-Schapiro
contends that
the DNC’s suit—which accuses WikiLeaks of conspiring with Russia
and the Trump campaign to tilt the 2016 election by publishing a
trove of hacked DNC emails—”goes against press freedom precedents
going back to the Pentagon Papers and contains arguments that could
make it more difficult for reporters to do their jobs.”

What
the language in this suit is calling ‘conspiracy’ is the same
thing journalists do all the time—report on leaked or stolen
documents. Imagine if Trump had the power to go after ‘leakers’
for ‘conspiracy,’”
Rolling
Stone
‘s
Matt Taibbi
wrote in
a series of tweets highlighting CPJ’s “blistering” report on
Tuesday. “This case has potentially enormous consequences for the
press as a whole.”

This
precedent threatens all journalists,” added Glenn Greenwald,
co-founder of
The
Intercept
.

Glenn Greenwald

@ggreenwald

The people pretending to be so concerned about press freedoms are actively threatening it, while journalists who express indignation toward Trump’s insulting tweets about Chuck Todd & Wolf Blitzer ignore it because the target is unpopular. This precedent threatens all journalists https://twitter.com/mtaibbi/status/1001804933140828160

George
Freeman, executive director of the Media Law Resource Center, echoed
Taibbi and Greenwald in an interview with CPJ, arguing that the DNC
clearly “paid zero attention to the First Amendment ramifications
of their suit.”

I’m
unhappy that there’s even an allegation that you could be held
liable for publishing leaked information that you didn’t have
anything to do with obtaining,” Freeman added.

James
Goodale, a First Amendment lawyer who represented the
New
York Times
 in
the
1971
Pentagon Papers case
,
said the idea that outlets like WikiLeaks should be punished for
receiving and publishing stolen documents—an idea that forms the
foundation of the DNC suit—is the “greatest threat to press
freedom today.”

As Common
Dreams
 at
the time
,
free speech advocates raised alarm about the DNC’s suit when it was
filed last month, arguing that it is both riddled with legal holes
and full of dangerous implications.

I
think that this civil suit goes well beyond what the First Amendment
permits,” Barry Pollack, former president of the National
Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, who represents WikiLeaks
founder Julian Assange in criminal cases. “We have seen in DOJs
under both parties, a willingness to at least bump right up against
the line of pursuing journalists criminally. And that’s dangerous.”

in Jemen >> 20 doden…..

Walgelijk!

As
Civilian Deaths in Yemen Mount, US to Sell Saudi Arabia Billions More
in Bombs

(CD— Further
demonstrating the willingness of the U.S. to reward and perpetuate
the
war
crimes
 of
its allies, the Trump administration is reportedly moving ahead with
a multi-billion-dollar sale of so-called “
smart
bombs

to Saudi Arabia just weeks after the U.S.-backed
Saudi-led
coalition bombed a wedding in Yemen
,
killing more than 20 people.

First reported by The
Intercept
‘s
Alex Emmons on Friday, the precise details of the deal—which also
includes weapons sales to the United Arab Emirates—are not entirely
unclear as it is in the preliminary stages, “but it is said to
include tens of thousands of precision-guided munitions from
Raytheon,” the company that helped produce weaponry used in the
deadly wedding airstrike last month.

The
sale in question is a direct commercial transaction between Raytheon
and the Gulf countries, which does not require the government to
publicly announce the sale at the time of congressional
notification,” Emmons reported. “That means it will be up to
senators to decide how many of the details to make public.”

The
reported weapons deal—which could be sent to Congress as early as
next week—comes as some American lawmakers are increasingly calling
attention to U.S. complicity in Saudi Arabia’s vicious, years-long
assault on Yemen.

In
March, Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), and Mike
Lee (R-Utah)
led
a failed legislative effort
 to
bring an end to U.S. military assistance to Saudi Arabia.

The
Saudi-led intervention in Yemen, with U.S. support, has been a
humanitarian disaster,” Sanders said after his resolution was voted
down with the help of 10 Democrats.

Responding
to reports of the “smart bomb” sale on Friday, Win Without War
policy director Kate Kizer called on Congress to intervene and
prevent the sale from going through:

Kate Kizer@KateKizer

Trump wants to sell & the a bunch more bombs to keep killing civilians in . Congress must stop this sale. https://theintercept.com/2018/05/11/american-saudi-arabia-weapons-deal-yemen-uae/

According
to the United Nations, “April was the deadliest month for civilians
in Yemen so far this year, with a sharp increase in casualties.”

At
least 236 civilians were killed and 238 injured in Yemen in April—a
total of 474 civilian casualties, well over double the 180 civilian
casualties documented in March this year,” the office of the the
U.N.

High
Commissioner for Human Rights
noted in
a press briefing on Friday. “Between 26 March 2015 and 10 May 2018,
our office has documented a total of 16,432 civilian casualties—6,385
dead and 10,047 injured. The vast majority of these—10,185 civilian
casualties—were as a result of airstrikes carried out by the
Saudi-led Coalition.”

Russian
Talking Points” Look An Awful Lot Like Well-Documented Facts

caitlinjohnstone (63) in russia •

Things
aren’t looking great for the Democratic establishment, which
recently
admitted that it stacks its primaries
 against
progressive candidates and is currently engaged in a desperate, hail
Mary
lawsuit
against WikiLeaks
 for
its factual publications about the party. So of course you know what
that means.

That’s
right! It’s time for Democratic pundits to begin down-punching Jill
Stein.

“Jill
Stein is on
@NewDay right
now repeating Russian talking points on its interference in the 2016
election and on US foreign policy,”
tweeted CNN
Chief National Security Correspondent Jim Sciutto today, without
shame or self-reflection.

Sciutto
was referring to comments Stein made on a
CNN
interview today
 about
America’s undeniable, entirely factual and
well-documented
history
 of
meddling in other countries’ elections, including a citation of
an
ex-CIA
Director’s recent admission
 that
the US has interfered in foreign electoral processes and continues to
do so to this day.

Because
that’s what constitutes a “Russian talking point” these
days: raw, easily verifiable facts.

Stein’s
interviewer, Chris “It’s illegal to read WikiLeaks” Cuomo,
echoed a similar sentiment in response to her points, in essence
arguing that only Russians should be stating these blatantly obvious
and extremely relevant facts.

“You
know, that would be the case for Russia to make, not from the
American perspective,” Cuomo said. “Of course, there’s
hypocrisy involved, lots of different big state actors do lots of
things that they may not want people to know about. But let Russia
say that the United States did it to us, and here’s how they did it,
so this is fair play. From the American perspective and you running
for president, more than once of this country, shouldn’t your
position have been, this was bad what they did, they’re trying to do
it right now and we have to stop it?”

Right.
Because you have so many Russians on your show making that case, do
you Chris?

This
is absolute lunacy. The implication here is that it isn’t ever okay
for Americans to talk about Russia in any other context than how
awful and evil its government is; that nobody can speak about how
America’s behavior factors into the equation in a very real and
significant way. Not because it’s not factual, not because it’s not
relevant, but because it’s a “Russian talking point”, and
only Russians should be saying it.

And
this sentiment being promulgated by these establishment pundits is
being swallowed hook, line and sinker by the rank-and-file citizenry
who consume such media. Every single day, without exception, I am
accused multiple times of being a propagandist for the Kremlin. Not
because there’s any evidence for that, not because I’m writing
anything that is untruthful, but because I’m writing “Russian
talking points”, i.e. arguments that have ostensibly been made
at some point by Russians.

And
it is, to be perfectly honest, infuriating. These people are actively
making the case for willful ignorance and stupidity. They’re actively
arguing that facts which don’t support the narratives being
promulgated by the CIA and the State Department should be completely
excluded from all discussion within the western hemisphere, and that
only Russians should be making them. They do this while
simultaneously arguing that Russian media is dangerous and should be
avoided by Americans. Only Russians should argue against CIA/CNN
narratives, and we should never, ever listen to those arguments.

They’re
arguing for the deliberate omission of relevant facts from dialogue.
They are arguing that we should all be morons, on purpose.

Of course it’s
relevant to the discussion that the US interferes with foreign
democratic processes far more than any other government on the
planet! Are you nuts? Yes,
obviously if
yours is the primary country responsible creating a climate wherein
governments meddle in the elections of other nations, that undeniable
fact must necessarily be a part of any sensible analysis of what’s
happening and what should be done about it. Anyone who tries to argue
that that fact shouldn’t be a part of the conversation is making an
argument in favor of stupidity.

That’s
not a “whataboutism”, as empire loyalists like Eric
Boehlert habitually
claim.
It’s crucial factual information.

The
environment that these pundits are creating is itself hostile to
democracy. If all “talking points” are excluded from the
conversation other than those which lead to continually escalating
sanctions, proxy wars, nuclear posturing and brinkmanship, then
there’s no way for activism or democracy to tap the brake on the
west’s ongoing trajectory toward direct military confrontation with a
nuclear superpower.

In
her interview, Stein
outlined this
quite clearly:

“You
know, I think that kind of position which says that we’re in a
totally different category from the rest of the world is not working.
This century of American domination, you know, sort of didn’t play
out the way we thought it would, we’re embroiled now — we have the
military in practically every country around the world. In the recent
taxes that people pay, the average American paid almost $3,500 that
went into the Department of Offense, I would call it, not the
Department of Defense, $3,500, whereas we put $40 into the EPA.

“You
know, 57 percent of our discretionary dollars now are going into the
military. It’s part of a mindset that says, we’re always right and
they’re always wrong and we’re going to be dominating militarily and
economically. We’re in a multi-polar world right now and, you know,
we need to behave as an exemplary member of the community and that is
by upholding ourselves and leading the way on international law,
human rights and diplomacy. That approach is really paying off on the
Korean peninsula right now. I think we should be using it more
broadly.”

Cuomo,
who as the son of a New York Governor and brother of the current New
York Governor is as much Democratic Party royalty as a Clinton, had
some very interesting facial expressions in response to Stein’s
arguments. Whenever an interviewee makes strong points which go
against the establishment grain he always looks like he’s taking a
really uncomfortable shit:

(ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha!)

There
have been far too many cartoonishly absurd responses to Stein’s
interview for me to address in a single article without putting my
laptop through the wall in a fit of rage, but
this
tweet
 from
MSNBC and
Atlanticcontributor
Natasha Bertrand is really something else.

“Jill
Stein just told
@CNN that
her presence at RT gala in Moscow Dec 2015 wasn’t controversial at
the time because Obama ‘was still on track for a reboot’ with Putin,”
said Bertrand, adding that “Russia had already annexed Crimea,
invaded eastern Ukraine, intervened in Syria for Assad, and hacked
the DNC.”

This
is actual, real-life “Oceania had always been at war with
Eastasia” Orwellian revisionist doublethink. There was no public
information about any Russian DNC hack in 2015, and the average
American hardly ever thought about Russia at that time.
Then-Secretary of State John Kerry
personally
met with Vladimir Putin in July of 2016
 to
discuss collaboration against terrorist forces in Syria. Only in the
most warped, revisionist, funhouse mirror Orwellian reality tunnel
can it be claimed that Stein visiting Moscow in December of 2015
would have been considered shady or controversial at the time.

The
fact that Bertrand’s tweet was liked and shared thousands of times on
Twitter is extremely creepy and disturbing. Establishment media
didn’t start indoctrinating American liberals with Russia hysteria
until the tail end of 2016, but it’s been so effective that MSNBC
mainliners are now gaslighting themselves into a revision of their
own history.

This
is why people like myself fight the CIA/CNN Russia narrative so
aggressively. Not because we’re propagandists, not because we’re

Stop

and crazy. Stop letting them manipulate us into consenting to
escalations with a nuclear superpower. Stop. Turn back. Wrong way.

April
20 is cannabis culture’s high holiday, and the Democratic National
Committee celebrated it with fervor this year: Blaze up, get silly,
file a bizarre lawsuit accusing the Russian government, Donald
Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, and transparency activist group
WikiLeaks of conspiring to steal an election.

The
suit confirms that after more than a year, special counsel Robert
Mueller still hasn’t amassed the evidence required for a successful
criminal prosecution, requiring proof “beyond a reasonable doubt.”
A civil suit lowers that bar to “a preponderance of the evidence.”

But
even that’s a long shot. The only credible evidence produced so far
implicates only the Trump campaign, not the other two defendants, and
only to the same extent that it likewise implicates the Clinton
campaign.

That
is, both campaigns admittedly tried to tap “Kremlin-connected”
sources (defined as “anyone who’s ever been in Moscow”) for
dirt on their opponents. Donald Trump Jr. met with a Russian lawyer
in hopes of getting the goods on Hillary Clinton. The Clinton
campaign commissioned a British former spy to work his Russian regime
sources for salacious tidbits on Trump the Elder.

Central
to the suit’s claims is alleged “Russian hacking” of the DNC’s
servers, followed by an embarrassing release of emails showing, among
other things, attempts by DNC to rig the 2016 primaries

in favor of
Clinton and against her main opponent, Bernie Sanders. Problems with
the case:

First,
the DNC refused to turn those servers over to the FBI for forensic
analysis, instead hiring a friendly cybersecurity firm to announce
the results it wanted announced.

Secondly,
metadata in the “hacked” files released by “Guccifer 2.0”
indicates transfer speeds consistent with an internal source at DNC
copying the files directly to a USB drive rather than an external
hacker accessing the servers.

Thirdly,
while the subsequent announcement by the US intelligence community of
its conclusions claims methods and IP addresses “consistent with”
Russian state hackers, those methods and IP addresses are also
“consistent with” every other type of hacker on Earth.

Fourthly
and probably decisively, the DNC makes the mistake of dragging
WikiLeaks into the matter. The next time WikiLeaks gets caught making
a false statement will be the first time. On the other hand, the
leaked emails themselves demonstrate that the DNC lies constantly and
without hesitation. When it comes to credibility, WikiLeaks is the
gold standard and the DNC is something one tries to wipe off the
bottom of one’s shoe before entering a respectable household.
WikiLeaks says no, its source was neither the Russian government nor
any other state party.

This
lawsuit is simply the latest version of what the DNC has been doing
since 2016: Trying to fob blame for its loss of an election it should
have won in a walk off onto someone, anyone, but itself and its
insanely poor choice of presidential nominee.

It’s
very a risky move. In civil suits “discovery” runs in both
directions. We’re about to learn a lot more about how the
Democratic Party really works behind the scenes.

SENATE
PROPOSAL TO CONSTRAIN TRUMP’S WAR MAKING WOULD ACTUALLY EXPAND
PERPETUAL WAR

A
new authorization for the use of military force proposed by
Democratic and Republican senators would further entrench the United
States in endless war. It would also streamline the ability of
President Donald Trump and future presidents to expand the “war on
terrorism” to additional countries and broaden a list of
“associated forces” that are “co-belligerents” of al-Qaida,
the Taliban, or the Islamic State.

Under
the proposed AUMF [
PDF],
which was drafted to replace the 2001 and 2002 AUMFs still in effect,
military force against the Taliban, al-Qaida, ISIS, and “designated
associated forces” is renewed.

On
January 20, 2022, and every four years after, the president is to
submit a report on the “use of military force,” which includes a
“proposal to repeal, modify, or leave in place” the current AUMF.

It
removes some of the ambiguity previously in the phrase “associated
forces” by naming the groups: al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula
(AQAP), al-Qaida in Syria (including al-Nusra), the Haqqani Network,
and al-Qaida in Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

When
the president determines that a “new organization, person, or force
is an associated force covered,” a report should be submitted to
the “appropriate congressional committees and leadership.”

A
similar procedure is to be followed when adding new foreign countries
to the list of places where the U.S. is at war. “New” countries
are any countries other than Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Somalia,
Yemen, and Libya.

The
AUMF proposal was
put
forward
 by
Republican Senator Bob Corker and Democratic Senator Tim Kaine* with
the bipartisan support of Republican Senators Jeff Flake and Todd
Young and Democratic Senators Chris Coons and Bill Nelson.

In
1973, Congress passed the War Powers Resolution as a response to the
Vietnam War. The resolution was intended to ensure the President of
the United States could only deploy U.S. military forces abroad
through declarations of war, “statutory authorizations,” or in
the case of a national emergency.

What
the proposed AUMF would effectively do is cement Congress as the war
clerk for the Executive Branch. It would represent a complete
abdication of responsibility over matters of war, as granted by the
separation of powers in U.S. government. The president would come to
leaders of congressional committees with a report that is reviewed,
filed, and updated accordingly, with Congress’ only task to make
sure they can fit the latest war making into the parameters laid out
for perpetual war.

Trump’s
latest strikes against Syria renewed attention on Congress’ failure
to assert authority over war making by the Executive Branch. Several
Democrats, like Representative Nancy Pelosi, made process critiques
and
argued there
must be an AUMF for Syria before Trump pursued more war. Yet, the
proposed AUMF does not really deal with the issue of military action
against sovereign countries.

It
does not provide authority for the president to use military force
against any nation state, but it also does not contemplate what
Congress should do if the president is engaged in actions, like the
strikes on Syria, which senators or representatives never approved.

Additionally,
the proposed AUMF grandfathers in the war in Yemen, where the United
States military has played an integral role in supporting a coalition
led by Saudi Arabia that has brutally attacked Yemenis and blockaded
civilians.

Senators
Chris Murphy, Mike Lee, and Bernie Sanders attempted to force a vote
on withdrawing U.S. military support for the war in Yemen because
Congress has not authorized war in the country. Corker took great
offense to this, and through the proposed AUMF, he and other senators
are ensuring Murphy, Lee, and Sanders cannot challenge U.S. military
action in Yemen again by retroactively approving war.

Out
of 535 members of Congress, Democratic Representative Barbara Lee was
the
only
person to vote
 against
the 2001 AUMF. She previously opposed bombing Iraq in the 1990s and
committing U.S. troops to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s
intervention in Kosovo.

Lee
declared, “This resolution, even though it was focused on the World
Trade Center attack, is open-ended. It doesn’t have an exit
strategy; it does not have any reporting requirements. And the
president already has authority to use force [internationally for 60
days without congressional approval] under the War Powers Act. So
what was this about?”

Her
caution went unheeded by elected officials. The Executive Branch used
the open-ended AUMF to develop a targeted assassination program,
where the groups it believed it could attack with drones or other
aircraft under the AUMF were kept entirely secret from the public.

Lee
opposes the proposal from Corker and Kaine because she believes it
will “continue our state of perpetual war.”

Rather
than reining in the Trump Administration’s blank check for war, the
Corker-Kaine AUMF would continue all current military operations,
allow any president to unilaterally expand our wars, and effectively
consent to endless war by omitting any sunset date or geographic
constraints for our ongoing operations. This legislation also further
limits Congress’s role in war making by requiring a veto-proof
majority to block military action from the president,” Lee
declared.

Republican
Senator Rand Paul also
outlined
his opposition
 to
the proposed AUMF while he was on CNN on April 17. “It is a good
idea to debate whether we should be at war or not. Unfortunately, the
[AUMF] they’re putting forward actually expands the president’s
ability to commit war.”

He
continued, “For the first time, it will list six or seven groups
that we’re at war with. If you remember, after 9/11, we were at war
with those who attacked us and who aided and abetted them. But now,
this is for the first time gonna codify six or seven groups, maybe
10-15 countries that we can be at war in. Really it’s limitless.”

If
we detect any of the groups having any activity in any country, the
president can go to war there. He just has to submit a notice saying,
hey guys, we’re now at war in a new country. And that to me is not
a limitation. It’s an expansion of war making, and I think, a huge
mistake,” Paul concluded.

Democratic
Senator Jeff Merkley
opposes the
proposed AUMF for similar reasons. “This new AUMF has no sunset
clause – meaning it can be used indefinitely by President Trump and
his successors to continue expanding the scope and geography of U.S.
military action around the world. The absence of a sunset clause all
but guarantees that this AUMF will be stretched by the executive
branch to avoid coming to Congress for future authorizations, which
is completely unacceptable.”

Even
more concerning, this legislation allows the president to
unilaterally expand the scope of the authorization, both in the
specific groups being targeted and in the countries in which the
United States takes military action. The clear constitutional vision
was for Congress and Congress alone to have the authority to initiate
war. This AUMF stands that on its head, giving the President that
power and leaving Congress with the impossible task of overriding
presidential actions.”

I
cannot support an authorization that gives a blank check for endless
war and turns Congress’s power over to the president. The Senate
should indeed debate a new AUMF, but it must be one that has built-in
timelines, mandates congressional approval, and limits the scope of
the conflict.”

That
is, for the most part, the extent of public opposition to the
proposed AUMF, as of April 22.

Its
supporters, like former Democratic Party vice presidential nominee
Tim Kaine, actually
contend it
will end the notion that the president has a “blank check to wage
war.”

Democratic
Senator Bill Nelson is gung-ho about the proposed AUMF, sounding like
President George W. Bush’s administration in the days after 9/11.

Terrorists
groups such as ISIS pose a serious threat to our national security.
This bill will give the president the clear legal authority he needs
to target these groups in Iraq, Syria or anywhere else they may be
hiding,” Nelson said.

Efforts
to repeal and update the AUMF have occurred multiple times in the
past decade. Most prominently, in 2015, President Barack
Obama
provided
legislation
 for
an AUMF that would cover strikes against ISIS. The proposal lacked
limitations like this recent proposal. Congress never voted on the
authorization, and Obama continued to rely on the 2001 AUMF to claim
authority for military action.

Over
the last sixteen years, we have witnessed the consequences of
unfettered executive power in matters of war,” Lee stated. “Instead
of further endorsing perpetual war, we need to insist on an AUMF that
is narrow, clearly defined, and respects Congress’s constitutional
duty to debate and authorize military action.”

Senators
appear to be appropriately concerned about the ways in which Trump
could abuse his authority, unlike under the Obama administration. But
that concern seems increasingly likely to translate into a measure
that will transform Congress’ efforts to challenge the imperial
presidency into even more of a charade.

(CD— While
44 U.S. Senators on Tuesday were applauded by peace groups for voting
in favor of a resolution that would have allowed Congress to begin
reclaiming its war-making authority and ended the U.S. military’s
backing of Saudi Arabia’s assault on Yemen, it was ultimately not
enough to overcome entrenched opposition from the 45 Republicans and
10 Democrats who voted against it.

Introduced
by Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), and Mike Lee
(R-Utah), the resolution (
SJ
Res. 54
)
would have ended the tacit military support—including targeting
assistance, refueling, and intelligence sharing—of the Saudi’s
campaign to wage war on Yemen, a nation currently embroiled in a
civil war and experiencing one of the worst humanitarian crises on
the planet.

The
final tally was 55-44 against the resolution, with only Sen. John
McCain (R-Ariz.) not casting a vote.

While
five Republicans voted for the measure, the 10 Democrats senators who
joined with the Republican majority to block it were: Coons (D-DE);
Cortez Masto (D-NV); Donnelly (D-IN); Heitkamp (D-ND); Jones (D-AL);
Manchin (D-WV); Menendez (D-NJ); Nelson (D-FL); Reed (D-RI); and
Whitehouse (D-RI).

Iona
Craig, the foreign correspondent who this year won a prestigious
George Polk Award for her coverage in Yemen, said that those who
voted against the effort will now have the “blood of thousands”
of Yemenis on their hands as the war continues and the crises
worsens.

Iona Craig

@ionacraig

The US Senate held the fate of millions of Yemenis in its hands. By voting to table they’ve not just killed a resolution. Those 55 senators will have the blood of thousands, who will die as a result of US support for the Saudi-led intervention in Yemen, on their hands.

Anti-war
groups, while disappointed with the outcome, celebrated the vote and
heralded it as an important step in terms of getting congressional
lawmakers to final assert themselves against an executive branch that
has been allowed to wage war with nearly no restraint over the last

Because
of the leadership put forth by Sens. Bernie Sanders, Mike Lee, and
Chris Murphy — and the tireless advocacy of hundreds of thousands
of Americans — the U.S. Senate was today finally forced to confront
America’s unauthorized role in Yemen’s deadly civil war,” Kate
Kizer, policy director for Win Without War, in a
statement.

We
commend the 44 Senators who agreed that U.S. military support for the
Saudi-led coalition is unconstitutional, counterproductive, and
doesn’t serve U.S. national security interests,” she added.
“Today’s vote should serve as a sober reminder to Saudi Arabia
that it must immediately move to resolve this conflict
diplomatically, and that American support for its war in Yemen is not
unlimited.”

Kate
Gould, legislative director on Middle East policy for the Friends
Committee on National Legislation (FCNL),
said that
despite the resolution’s failure, the “groundswell of grassroots
activism to end this war is not going to let up until this illegal
war ends, and U.S. pilots stop fueling U.S.-made bombers to rein down
U.S.-made bombs on schools, hospitals and neighborhoods. The U.S.
must stop literally fueling the deliberate killing and starvation of
countless civilians in Yemen, and support a peaceful solution to end
this crisis.”

Susan
Sarandon: Hillary Clinton Would’ve Been “More Dangerous”
Than Trump

by Tyler
Durden

In
an interview with the
Guardian published
Sunday night, actress Susan Sarandon – a noted anti-war and climate
progressive – described her former friend Hillary Clinton as “very
dangerous” in response to an interviewer’s question about why she
supported Green Party candidate Jill Stein.

Furthermore,
Sarandon, who has been the subject of vicious and persistent attacks
by leftists for supporting a third-party candidate that many blame,
wrongly, for throwing the election to Trump. She said she had to
change her phone number because – get this – angry Clinton
supporters left a torrent of death and rape threats on her voicemail.

Sarandon,
who fist became involved in activism as a young woman when she became
an early and vocal proponent of the anti-War movement in the late
1960s and early 1970s, even suggested that Clinton might’ve been
“more dangerous” than Trump.

Did
she really say that Hillary was more dangerous than Trump?

Not
exactly, but I don’t mind that quote,” she says.
 “I
did think she was very, very dangerous. We would still be fracking,
we would be at war [if she was president]. It wouldn’t be much
smoother. Look what happened under Obama that we didn’t notice.”

Though
she supported Clinton’s first bid for the senate in 2001, Sarandon
said her support for Clinton evaporated when the then-senator voted
in favor of the war in Iraq*.

It
is often overlooked that in 2001, Sarandon supported Hillary
Clinton’s run for the Senate. There are photos of them posing
chummily together, grinning. Then Clinton voted for the war in Iraq
and it all went downhill.
During
the last election, Sarandon supported Bernie Sanders, then wouldn’t
support Clinton after she won the nomination, and now all the
moderates hate her, to the extent, she says, that she had to change
her phone number because people she identifies as Hillary trolls sent
her threatening messages. “I got from Hillary people ‘I hope your
crotch is grabbed’, ‘I hope you’re raped’.
Misogynistic
attacks. Recently, I said ‘I stand with Dreamers’ [children
brought illegally to the US, whose path to legal citizenship – an
Obama-era provision – Trump has threatened to revoke] and that
started another wave.”

Wait,
from the right?

In
a jab at her critics on the left, Sarandon said she isn’t worried
about the threats or the criticism from people who bizarrely blame
her for throwing the election to Trump. Instead, she’s worried that
the left’s refusal to reckon with the true nature of the problem –
that the DNC rigged an election to favor a flawed, unpopular
candidate – will harm progressive causes in the long run.

Well,
that’s why we’re going to lose again if we depend on the DNC [the
Democratic National Committee]. Because the amount of denial … I
mean it’s very flattering to think that I, on my own, cost the
election. That my little voice was the deciding factor.”

Is
it upsetting to be attacked?

It’s
upsetting to me more from the point of view of thinking they haven’t
learned. I don’t need to be vindicated.”

But
it’s upsetting that they’re still feeding the same misinformation
to people. When Obama got the nomination, 25% of [Hillary’s] people
didn’t vote for him. Only 12% of Bernie’s people didn’t vote
for her.”

But
she didn’t advocate voting for Hillary! Come on.

Hmm?”

Didn’t
she advocate voting for Jill Stein?

I
didn’t advocate people voting for anything. I said get your
information, I’m going to vote for change, because I was hoping
that Stein was going to get whatever percentage she needed – but I
knew she wasn’t going to make the difference in the election.”

Luckily,
Sarandon said her friends have stood by her, at least.

Has
she lost friends over all this? “No. My friends have a right to
their opinions.
It’s
disappointing but that’s their business. It’s like in the lead-up
to Vietnam, and then later they say: ‘You were right.’
 Or
strangely, some of my gay friends were like: ‘Oh, I just feel bad
for [Clinton]. And I said: ‘She’s not authentic. She’s been
terrible to gay people for the longest time. She’s an opportunist.’
And then I’m like: ‘OK, let’s not talk about it any more.’”

Still,
I think while there was vast political error on both sides, the
inability of Sarandon and her ilk to embrace the lesser of two evils
permitted the greater of the two evils to rise.
And
yet I like Sarandon. It takes real courage to go against the mob. Her
inconsistencies are a little wild, but in the age of social-media
enforced conformity, I have never met anyone so uninterested in
toeing the line.

When
it comes to deportations, Sarandon said a hypothetical Clinton
administration probably have continued with Obama’s strategy of
“sneakily” deporting immigrants.

Given
his record on immigration and extrajudicial drone-enabled murder,
Sarandon said she was shocked that he won the Nobel Peace Prize.

It
seems absurd to argue that healthcare, childcare, taxation for the
non-rich wouldn’t be better now under President Clinton, and that’s
before we get to the threat of deportation hanging over millions of
immigrants. “
She
would’ve done it the way Obama did it,” says Sarandon, “
which
was sneakily.
 He
deported more people than have been deported now. How he got the
Nobel peace prize I don’t know. I think it was very important to
have a black family in the White House and I think some of the stuff
he did was good. He tried really hard about healthcare. But he didn’t
go all the way because of big pharma.”

This
isn’t the first time Sarandon has suggested that Clinton could be a
greater national security risk than Trump. She made similar comments
in June 2016, just as Clinton was clinching the nomination. At that
time, Trump’s “America First” foreign policy pledge – which
was based on a philosophy of noninterventionism – was arguably more
dovish than his rival.

Of
course, Trump has pivoted away from that stance since taking office,
authorizing more troop deployments in Afghanistan and threatening
North Korea with nuclear annihilation, chagrining many of his early
supporters.

=============================

* Sarandon brak met Clinton toen deze zich in 2001 voor de illegale oorlog tegen Afghanistan verklaarde. Durden noemt hier Irak, echter dat moet zoals gezegd Afghanistan zijn, de illegale oorlog tegen Irak begon in 2003. (overigens ook een illegale oorlog waar Clinton voorstander van was…..)
