complex……..

Mass
Media’s Phony Freakout Over Bernie’s WaPo Criticism Is Backfiring

After
days of
ridiculous,
hysterical garment rending
 by
mass media talking heads in response to Senator Bernie
Sanders’
utterly
undeniable
 assertion
that
The
Washington Post
 has
displayed unfair bias against his campaign, people with extensive
experience in the mainstream press who are fed up with the lies are
beginning to push back. Hard.

Former
MSNBC producer Jeff Cohen has
published
an article in
Salon
 titled
“Memo to mainstream journalists: Can the phony outrage; Bernie is
right about bias”. Cohen details his experience with the way
corporate media outlets keep a uniform pro-establishment narrative
running throughout all their coverage without their staff having to
be directly told to to do this by their supervisors (though sometimes
that happens, too). He writes as follows:

It
happens because of groupthink. It happens because top editors and
producers know — without being told — which issues and sources
are off limits. No orders need be given, for example, for
rank-and-file journalists to understand that the business of the
corporate boss or top advertisers is off-limits, short of criminal
indictments.

No
memo is needed to achieve the narrowness of perspective — selecting
all the usual experts from all the
usual
think tanks
 to
say all the usual things. Think
Tom
Friedman
. Or Barry
McCaffrey
.
Or
Neera
Tanden
.
Or any of the elite club members who’ve been proven to be absurdly
wrong time and again about national or global affairs.”

Cohen’s
exposé follows
the
phenomenal segment
 recently
aired on
The
Hill
‘s
show
Rising,
in which former MSNBC star Krystal Ball and her co-host Saagar Enjati
both detailed their experience with the way access journalism,
financial incentives, prestige incentives and peer pressure were used
to push them each toward protecting establishment narratives in their
respective mainstream media careers. Ball said at one point she was
literally called into the office and forbidden from doing any
critical Hillary Clinton coverage without prior approval in the
lead-up to the 2016 election, saying that in mainstream journalism
jobs “you are aware of what you’re going to be rewarded for and
what you’re going to be punished for, or not rewarded for.”

It’s
not necessarily that somebody tells you how to do your coverage, it’s
that if you were to do your coverage that way, you would not be hired
at that institution,” Enjati said. “So it’s like if you do not
already fit within this framework, then the system is designed to not
give you a voice. And if you necessarily did do that, all of the
incentive structures around your pay, around your promotion, around
your colleagues that are slapping you on the back, that would all
disappear. So it’s a system of reinforcement, which makes it so
that you wouldn’t go down that path in the first place.”

Rolling
Stone
‘s
Matt Taibbi has also jumped in to push back against the absurd
denials of bias from the establishment media,
publishing
a new article
 titled
“The Campaign Press: Members of the 10 Percent, Reporting for the
One Percent–Media companies run by the country’s richest people
can’t help but project the mindset of their owners.” Taibbi, an
award-winning journalist with
lots
of experience
 in
the news media industry, writes that pro-establishment
narratives are advanced in mainstream press not because some explicit
order is handed down by a media-owning oligarch, but because “We
all know what takes will and will not earn attaboys in newsrooms.”

Taibbi
writes the following:

The
news media is now loathed in the same way banks, tobacco companies,
and health insurance companies are, and it refuses to understand
this. Mistakes like WMDs are a problem, but the media’s biggest
issue is exactly its bubble-ness, and clubby inability to respond to
criticism in any way except to denounce it as misinformation and
error. Equating all criticism of media with Trumpism is pouring
gasoline on the fire.

The
public is not stupid. It sees that companies like CNN and NBC are
billion-dollar properties, pushing shows anchored by big-city
millionaires. A Vanderbilt like Anderson Cooper or a half-wit legacy
pledge like Chris Cuomo shoveling coal for Comcast, Amazon, AT&T,
or Rupert Murdoch is the standard setup.”

Taibbi
is correct. Trust in the mass media
continues
to plummet
,
and these stupid, nonsensical hissy fits they throw whenever
criticized are only making it worse.

What
cracks me up most about all this is that the faux outrage over
Sanders’ criticisms of
The
Washington Post
 was
completely unnecessary for everyone involved. They could have just
ignored it and let the news churn bury it, but they’re so insulated
in their little echo chambers that they seriously believed they could
get the public rallying to their defense on this. The general
consensus was something like “Ah ha! Bernie did that
media-criticizing thing that we all agreed nobody’s allowed to do
anymore! We’ve got him this time, boys!”

And
all they accomplished in doing this was giving honest journalists an
opportunity to inform the public about the insider tricks of their
trade. You may be absolutely certain that the information that has
been given to the public by Cohen, Ball, Enjati and Taibbi will
remain in high circulation throughout the Sanders campaign in
response to the increasingly shrill torrent of establishment smears,
breaking the spell of mainstream media trust for all who view it.

More than two thirds of Americans don’t believe Epstein died by suicide

Only 29% of Americans believe Epstein died by “suicide” showing that the establishment’s narrative control isn’t working anymore http://rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/general_politics/august_2019/americans_say_murder_more_likely_than_suicide_in_epstein_case

Americans Say Murder More Likely Than Suicide in Epstein Case

Americans aren’t buying that disgraced financier and convicted sex criminal Jeffrey Epstein killed himself in jail last weekend.

All
these damning insider criticisms of the mainstream American press are
coming out at the same time
a
new Rasmussen poll
 finds
that less than one third of the US population believes the story
they’re being told by the corporate media about the highly
suspicious death of accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.
Despite
the
mass media’s mad push
 to
tar anyone questioning the official narrative about Epstein as a
loony “conspiracy theorist”, only 29 percent of those surveyed
reported that they believed Epstein had committed suicide as they’ve
been told, while 42 percent believe he was murdered. Never in my life
have I seen such a widespread and instantaneous rejection of an
establishment-promulgated narrative in the United States.

This
is hugely significant. The entire imperial oppression machine is held
together with aggressive plutocratic propaganda; the ability of the
ruling class to manipulate the way people think, act and vote is the
only thing stopping the public from using the power of their numbers
to force real changes and create a new system that is not built upon
endless war, ecocide and exploitation. The mass media propaganda
engine is now at its weakest and most vulnerable point ever, and the
narrative managers’ attempts to regain control are only exposing
them more severely.

Power
is the ability to control what happens. Absolute power is the ability
to control what people
thinkabout
what happens. Our rulers are rapidly losing this absolute power.

People
are waking up.

Ten
Years After Not One High-Level Banker Sent to Jail for Tanking Global
Economy, This Man Gets 20 Years in Prison for Stealing Cigarettes

This
is America. by
Jon
Queally, staff writer

Robert
Spellman was sentence last week to 20 years in prison for stealing
ten cartons of cigarettes from a local convenience store. (Photo:
Escambia County Jail)

Ten
years after the behavior of over-leveraged and fraudulent banks
created a global financial disaster that resulted in
hundreds
of billions of dollars
 in
losses;
a
multi-trillion bailout using public money
;
and
millions
of people losing their homes to foreclosure
,
but saw not one high-level financial executive go to jail, a man in
Florida has been sentenced to a 20-year prison term for stealing $600
worth of cigarettes from a local convenience store.

According to
the
Associated
Press
,
“Robert Spellman, 48, received the lengthy sentence after a jury
in Pensacola convicted him of burglary and grand theft last month.”
As the
Pensacola
News Journal
 reports:

He
went into the Circle K in the 200 block of West Cervantes Street and
took 10 cartons of cigarettes from a locked manager’s office in the
stock room.

He
was found nearby, matched a description of the suspect, was wearing
the same clothing and had the cigarettes, according to the State
Attorney’s Office.

Spellman
had 14 felony and 31 misdemeanor convictions prior to this charge, so
his 20-year sentence qualifies him as a habitual felony offender.

While
the average carton contains 200 cigarettes, that means Spellman will
now serve approximately 3.65 days in prison for each of the 2,000
cigarettes he allegedly stole.

Asked
in 2016 about why
no
high-level bankers went to jail after the 2008 crash
,
former Attorney General Eric Holder lamented that reality by claiming
the DOJ just coudn’t make the cases stick, though said he wished it
had been possible:

Writing
about the tenth anniversary of the 2008 crash last month in
Rolling
Stone
,
journalist Matt Taibbi
noted that
while “everyone in the upper echelon of the finance community
got Paid In Full in the bailout, even the exact people who screwed up
the worst,” those whose suffered most of the “miserable
story turned out to be poor, nonwhite, and elderly.”

Though
it’s likely that most poor, nonwhite, and elderly Americans didn’t
need to be told that.

woorden!)

Nu

Journalism
Watchdog Condemns DNC Lawsuit Against WikiLeaks as Severe Threat to
Free Press

May
30, 2018 at 9:14 pm

Written
by
Jake
Johnson

(CD— As
President Donald Trump continues to wage war on journalism with
violent
anti-press rhetoric
,”
the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) published a scathing
analysis on Tuesday arguing that the Democratic National
Committee’s
recent
lawsuit
 against
WikiLeaks could set the stage for even more alarming attacks on press
freedom by empowering the U.S. government to penalize media outlets
that publish leaked information.

Citing
the concerns expressed by numerous First Amendment experts and
journalists, CPJ’s Avi Asher-Schapiro
contends that
the DNC’s suit—which accuses WikiLeaks of conspiring with Russia
and the Trump campaign to tilt the 2016 election by publishing a
trove of hacked DNC emails—”goes against press freedom precedents
going back to the Pentagon Papers and contains arguments that could
make it more difficult for reporters to do their jobs.”

What
the language in this suit is calling ‘conspiracy’ is the same
thing journalists do all the time—report on leaked or stolen
documents. Imagine if Trump had the power to go after ‘leakers’
for ‘conspiracy,’”
Rolling
Stone
‘s
Matt Taibbi
wrote in
a series of tweets highlighting CPJ’s “blistering” report on
Tuesday. “This case has potentially enormous consequences for the
press as a whole.”

This
precedent threatens all journalists,” added Glenn Greenwald,
co-founder of
The
Intercept
.

Glenn Greenwald

@ggreenwald

The people pretending to be so concerned about press freedoms are actively threatening it, while journalists who express indignation toward Trump’s insulting tweets about Chuck Todd & Wolf Blitzer ignore it because the target is unpopular. This precedent threatens all journalists https://twitter.com/mtaibbi/status/1001804933140828160

George
Freeman, executive director of the Media Law Resource Center, echoed
Taibbi and Greenwald in an interview with CPJ, arguing that the DNC
clearly “paid zero attention to the First Amendment ramifications
of their suit.”

I’m
unhappy that there’s even an allegation that you could be held
liable for publishing leaked information that you didn’t have
anything to do with obtaining,” Freeman added.

James
Goodale, a First Amendment lawyer who represented the
New
York Times
 in
the
1971
Pentagon Papers case
,
said the idea that outlets like WikiLeaks should be punished for
receiving and publishing stolen documents—an idea that forms the
foundation of the DNC suit—is the “greatest threat to press
freedom today.”

As Common
Dreams
 at
the time
,
free speech advocates raised alarm about the DNC’s suit when it was
filed last month, arguing that it is both riddled with legal holes
and full of dangerous implications.

I
think that this civil suit goes well beyond what the First Amendment
permits,” Barry Pollack, former president of the National
Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, who represents WikiLeaks
founder Julian Assange in criminal cases. “We have seen in DOJs
under both parties, a willingness to at least bump right up against
the line of pursuing journalists criminally. And that’s dangerous.”

Ach ja, wiens brood men eet……….

The
Elites Won’t Save Us

By
Chris Hedges

February
13, 2017 “
Information
Clearing House

– “Truth
Dig
” – The four-decade-long assault on our democratic
institutions by corporations has left them weak and largely
dysfunctional. These institutions, which surrendered their efficacy
and credibility to serve corporate interests, should have been our
firewall. Instead, they are tottering under the onslaught.

Labor
unions are a spent force. The press is corporatized and distrusted.
Universities have been purged of dissidents and independent scholars
who criticize neoliberalism and
decry the decay of democratic institutions and political parties.
Public broadcasting and the arts have been defunded and left on life
support. The courts have been stacked with judges whose legal careers
were spent serving corporate power, a trend in appointments that
continued under Barack Obama. Money has replaced the vote, which is
how someone as unqualified as Betsy DeVos can buy herself a Cabinet
seat. And the Democratic Party, rather than sever its ties to Wall
Street and corporations, is naively waiting in the wings to profit
from a Trump debacle.

The
biggest asset Trump has is the decadent, clueless, narcissistic,
corporate-indentured, war-mongering Democratic Party,” Ralph
Nader
said when I reached him by phone in Washington. “If
the Democratic strategy is waiting for Godot, waiting for Trump to
implode, we are in trouble. And just about everything you say about
the Democrats you can say about the AFL-CIO.
They don’t control the train.”

The
loss of credibility by democratic institutions has thrust the country
into an existential as well as economic crisis. The courts,
universities and press are no longer trusted by tens of millions of
Americans who correctly see them as organs of the corporate elites.
These institutions are traditionally the mechanisms by which a
society is able to unmask the lies of the powerful, critique ruling
ideologies and promote justice. Because Americans have been bitterly
betrayed by their institutions, the Trump regime can attack the press
as the “
opposition
party
,” threaten to cut off university
funding
, taunt a federal jurist as a “so-called
judge
” and denounce
a court order
 as “outrageous.”

The
decay of democratic institutions is the prerequisite for the rise of
authoritarian or fascist regimes. This decay has given credibility to
a pathological liar. The Trump administration, according to an
Emerson College poll, is considered by 49 percent of registered
voters to be truthful while the media are considered truthful by only
39 percent of registered voters. Once American democratic
institutions no longer function, reality becomes whatever absurdity
the White House issues.

Most
of the rules of democracy are unwritten. These rules determine public
comportment and ensure respect for democratic norms, procedures and
institutions. President Trump has, to the delight of his supporters,
rejected this political and cultural etiquette.

Hannah
Arendt
in “The Origins of Totalitarianism” noted that
when democratic institutions collapse it is “easier to accept
patently absurd propositions than the old truths which have become
pious banalities.” The chatter of the liberal ruling elites about
our democracy is itself an absurdity. “Vulgarity with its cynical
dismissal of respected standards and accepted theories,” she wrote,
infects political discourse. This vulgarity is “mistaken for
courage and a new style of life.”

He
is destroying one code of behavior after another,” Nader said of
Trump. “He is so far getting away with it and not paying a price.
He is breaking standards of behavior—what he says about women,
commercializing the White House, I am the law.”

Nader
said he does not think the Republican Party will turn against Trump
or consider impeachment unless his presidency appears to threaten its
chances of retaining power in the 2018 elections. Nader sees the
Democratic Party as too “decadent and incompetent” to mount a
serious challenge to Trump. Hope, he said, comes from the numerous
protests that have been mounted in
the streets
at
town halls
held by members of Congress and at flash points
such as Standing
Rock
. It may also come from the 2.5 million civil servants within
the federal government if a significant number refuse to cooperate
with Trump’s authoritarianism.

The
new president is clearly aware of the power wielded by civil
servants, who swear an oath of allegiance to the U.S. Constitution,
not to any president or administration,” Maria J. Stephan, the
co-author of “Why Civil Resistance Works,” writes
in The Washington Post
. (WaPo) “One of Trump’s first acts as
president was a sweeping federal hiring freeze affecting all new and
existing positions except those related to the military, national
security and public safety. Even before Trump’s inauguration, the
Republican-controlled House of Representatives reinstated an obscure
1876 rule that would allow Congress to slash the salaries of
individual federal workers. This was a clear warning to those serving
in government to keep their heads down. Trump’s high-profile firing
of acting attorney general Sally Yates, who refused to follow the
president’s immigration ban, sent shock waves through the
bureaucracy.”

A
sustained, nationwide popular uprising of nonviolent obstruction and
noncooperation is the only weapon left to save the republic. The
elites will respond once they become afraid. If we do not make them
afraid we will fail.

The
four-decade-long assault on our democratic institutions by
corporations has left them weak and largely dysfunctional. These
institutions, which surrendered their efficacy and credibility to
serve corporate interests, should have been our firewall. Instead,
they are tottering under the onslaught.

Labor
unions are a spent force.

Stephan, the
co-author of “Why Civil Resistance Works,” writes
in The Washington Post
. “One of Trump’s first acts as
president was a sweeping federal hiring freeze affecting all new and
existing positions except those related to the military, national
security and public safety. Even before Trump’s inauguration, the
Republican-controlled House of Representatives reinstated an obscure
1876 rule that would allow Congress to slash the salaries of
individual federal workers. This was a clear warning to those serving
in government to keep their heads down. Trump’s high-profile firing
of acting attorney general Sally Yates, who refused to follow the
president’s immigration ban, sent shock waves through the
bureaucracy.”

A
sustained, nationwide popular uprising of nonviolent obstruction and
noncooperation is the only weapon left to save the republic. The
elites will respond once they become afraid. If we do not make them
afraid we will fail.
