Hiroshima 6 augustus 1945: atoombom slachtoffers winnen rechtszaak

A Hard Rain Did Fall: a Big Win in Court for Hiroshima Victims

“Thirsty woman catching black rain in her mouth” de Akiko Takakura/WikimediaCommons.

Just weeks before the 2021 commemoration of the August 6, 1945 US
atomic bombing of the city of Hiroshima, a Japanese court ruled that
victims of the radioactive “black rain” who were living beyond the
officially recognized contamination zone at the time, should be included
in the group considered bomb “survivors” or “Hibakusha” and receive the
same benefits.

A Hiroshima high court acknowledged in its July 14, 2021 ruling that
many more people suffered as a result of exposure to “black rain” than
have hitherto been recognized as victims.

“Black rain” was described in a CNN story
as a “mixture of fallout particles from the explosion, carbon residue
from citywide fires, and other dangerous elements. The black rain fell
on peoples’ skin and clothing, was breathed in, contaminated food and
water, and caused widespread radiation poisoning.”

When the verdict was first released last month, it appeared that the
Japanese government, under Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, might appeal
the decision. Instead, Suga declared his government, the defendants in
the case, would not appeal it and even suggested that relief might be
extended to other affected people beyond the plaintiffs. According to
the Asahi Shimbun, this may even include those exposed to radiation as a result of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster on the Japan coast.

The court ruling was important because it recognized and acknowledged
not only the heaths effects of the radioactive “black rain” atomic bomb
fallout, but also the internal exposure to radiation through the
ingestion of contaminated water and food experienced by the 84
plaintiffs in the case.

The ruling of course comes very late in the day as many Hibakusha are
already deceased. Indeed, one of the plaintiffs, 79-year-old Seiji
Takato, told CNN he was worried that if there was no verdict soon, “we would all die if this (case were) prolonged”.

The plaintiffs will now receive the same benefits as residents of the state-designated black rain zone. According to the Kyodo News,
these will include “free health checkups and atomic bomb survivors’
certificates entitling them to medical benefits in the event that they
develop 11 specific illnesses caused by radiation.”

The United States, the country which dropped the two atomic bombs —
on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 and then on Nagasaki three days later —
has taken neither responsibility for the devastating health
consequences, nor offered an apology or compensation.

Indeed, President Truman, in office when the bombings were
authorized, told the Japanese, chillingly, that their sacrifice and
suffering were “urgent and necessary.” President Clinton declared that
the US “owes no apology to Japan”. He, like other US presidents before
and since, clung to the disputable notion that the atomic bombings saved
at least one million American lives, an argument ably dispatched by Ward Wilsonon these pages in 2018.

To date, Barack Obama is the only sitting US president to have
visited Hiroshima, when he traveled there in 2016, but he too failed to
apologize for the atrocity. There have been plenty of lively debates
on this question: Would an apology open up old wounds, focus too much
on the past and be an admission of wrongdoing? Would it also open the
door to a floodgate of demands
for monetary compensation? Or is an official apology an essential
atonement, albeit merely symbolic at this late stage? Could an apology
lead in turn to meaningful international engagement on global peace?

Slowly, the Hibakusha have been gaining recognition. One of its most
famous and outspoken members, Setsuko Thurlow, accepted the Nobel Peace
Prize awarded the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons
(ICAN) alongside its executive director, Beatrice Fihn, in 2017.

The award came on the heels of the instrumental role the Hibakusha played in persuading the UN to create the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), now ratified
by 55 countries and counting, five more than the number that ensured it
became law this past January. None of the nuclear weapons states, nor
Japan, has signed or ratified the treaty.

At the end of the day, the lesson here is the mantra adopted by the nuclear researchers, whistleblowers and watchdogs at Fairewinds Energy Education: “Radiation knows no borders.”

As Fairewinds wrote in the context of the “black rain” verdict:
“Radioactive microscopic particles generated from mining uranium ore,
reprocessing atomic fuel, bomb tests, and disastrous meltdowns travel
well beyond the arbitrary boundaries and demarcation lines that
governments establish to limit their liability and to maintain control
over others.”

These warnings serve as a compelling reason to neither test nor use
atomic weapons and also as a powerful admonition against the continued
use of “civil” nuclear power.

Recent years, the words
“mind control abuse and torture” and “target individual”
appears frequently online. Thousands of people in groups or
individually cries attention to the abuses and tortures with
electromagnetic mind control technologies through internet and all
other channels. The scale of the ongoing crimes is large, and hidden.
People are asking for the worldwide attention and an international
investigation of enormous human rights violations that are silently
taking place worldwide at this moment.

Abstract:

One of the twenty-first century’s
greatest violations of human rights is the proliferation of mind
control technologies and their accompanying abuse and torture.
Thousands of innocent victims across the globe have become activists
for their freedom.

Electromagnetic mind control
technologies are weapons which use electromagnetic waves to hijack a
person’s brain and nervous system and subvert an individual’s
sense of control over their own thinking, behavior, emotions or
decision making. This article is a brief introduction to mind control
technologies, the grave situation of hidden mind control abuses and
tortures, and victims, including Soleilmavis Liu, whose work is to
expose mind control technologies and their torturous abuses, and to
urge governments worldwide to investigate and halt these egregious
violations of human rights.

Introduction

Thousands of people in groups or
individually cries attention to the abuses and tortures with
electromagnetic mind control technologies through internet and all
other channels. The scale of the ongoing crimes is large, and hidden.
People are asking for the worldwide attention and an international
investigation of enormous human rights violations that are silently
taking place worldwide at this moment.

This article will briefly introduce
mind control technologies, current data of mind control victims,
Soleilmavis’ case summary, and their work to expose mind control
abuse and torture. Soleilmavis’ case summary and her work will
hopefully bring more public awareness to the secret crimes of mind
control abuses and tortures.

Brief introduction of mind
control technologies

Mind control technologies are
weapons which use electronic microchip implants, nanotechnologies,
microwaves and/or electromagnetic waves to subvert an individual’s
sense of control over their own thinking, behavior, emotions or
decision making by attacking the brain and nervous system. The
development of these methods and technologies has a long history.

  1. Nazi Wonder Drug

Nazi researchers used concentration
camp inmates to test a cocaine-based “wonder drug” they hoped
would enhance the performance of German troops. Hamburg-based
criminologist Wolf Kemper believed that D-IX pills were Hitler’s
last secret development. The so-called Experiment D-IX started in
November of the year 1944 in Sachsenhausen concentration camp. The
results of all those tests inspired their initiators to supply D-IX
drug to the entire Nazi Army. However, they failed to launch the mass
production of the substance. The allies’ victories at both fronts
in winter and spring of in 1945 resulted in the collapse of the Nazi
regime. The absurd dream of the wonder drug was crushed. [1]

According to the “Want to Know”
information site, “After the end of World War II, German scientists
were held in a variety of detainment camps by the allies. In 1946,
President Truman authorized Project Paperclip to exploit German
scientists for American research, and to deny these intellectual
resources to the Soviet Union.” Some reports bluntly pointed out
that they were “ardent Nazis.” They were considered so vital to
the “Cold War” effort that they would be brought into the US and
Canada. Some of these experts had participated in murderous medical
experiments on human subjects at concentration camps. A 1999 report
to the Senate and the House said “between 1945 and 1955; 765
scientists, engineers, and technicians were brought to the US under
Paperclip and similar programs.” (

  1. Mk-ultra, America’s
Central Intelligence Agency mind control project.

The Central Intelligence
Agency’s Fact Book

states the NSC (National Security Council) and the CIA were
established under the provisions of the National Security Act of
1947. In December 1947, the NSC held its first meeting. James
Forrestal, the Secretary of Defense, pushed for the CIA to begin a
“secret war” against the Soviets. Forrestal’s initiative led to
the execution of psychological warfare operations (psy-ops) in
Europe. CIA personnel were not opposed to working with Nazi doctors
who had proven to be proficient in breaking the mind and rebuilding
it. In some cases, military bases were used to hide these covert
activities. It was decided that the communist threat was an issue
that took priority over constitutional rights.

One of the areas to be investigated
by the CIA was Mind Control. The CIA’s human behavior control
program was chiefly motivated by perceived Soviet, Chinese, and North
Korean use of mind control techniques. Under the protection of
“national security,” many other branches of the government also
took part in the study of this area. The CIA originated its first
program in 1950 under the name BLUEBIRD, which in 1951, after Canada
and Britain had been included, was changed to ARTICHOKE. MK-Ultra
officially began in 1953. Technically it was closed in 1964, but some
of its programs remained active under MKSEARCH well into the
seventies. In 1973, tipped off about forthcoming investigations, CIA
Director Richard Helms ordered the destruction of any MK-Ultra
records. (
MC 10, 17

There is an overwhelming body of
evidence that confirms the existence of MK-Ultra. More than 250
people who claim they were the victims of “brainwashing” by
America’s Central Intelligence Agency were set to win a
multimillion dollar legal battle for compensation. Nine already had
each received $67,000 (£33,500) compensation from the spy agency,
which had admitted to setting up an operation codenamed MK-Ultra
during the Cold War. [Mike Parker,

Bourne Identity Plot (Mkultra)

  1. Implantable electronic
    chip mind control

Many researchers, using
nanotechnologies had developed implantable electronic chips that
established new nerve connections in parts of the brain that
controlled movement or even altered emotion and thought. Researchers
at the University of Washington (UW) had been working on an
implantable electronic chip that might help establish new nerve
connections in the part of the brain that controlled movement. Their
study, to be published in the November 2, 2006, edition of Nature,
showed such a device could induce brain changes in monkeys lasting
more than a week (Leila Gray,
Tiny
Electronic Chip, Interacting with the Brain, Modifies Pathways for
Controlling Movement
,
University of Washington News, October 24, 2006). [3]

On March 18, 2008, the Central
Intelligence Agency responded in writing to a Larson Media Freedom of
Information Act request. The document disclosed that the CIA’s use
of biomedical intellectual property developed at the Alfred Mann
Foundation, Second Sight LLC, Advanced Bionics, and under Naval Space
Warfare (SPAWAR) contract #N6600106C8005, was “currently and
properly classified pursuant to an executive order in the interest of
national security,” and applied to the CIA Director’s “statutory
obligation to protect from disclosure, intelligence sources and
methods.” The technology, developed under the DARPA programs of
Tony Tether, Col. Geoffrey Ling and N.I.H programs of William
Heetderks, had been protected as a Defense “Special Access
Program1” (SAP), which was the official terminology for a “black
project.” The research had resulted in implantable devices that
were millimeter and sub-millimeter in size, could be surreptitiously
implanted (and had been fabricated in a manner that the devices could
not be detected or localized by clinical medical or radiology
techniques), and provided a shocking amount of surveillance
capability regarding a subject’s activities, which might include
visual and auditory biofeedback data.

Additionally, the devices were
capable of delivering testosterone or any other biological agent.

  1. Voice to Skull
    Technologies

Artificial microwave voice-to-skull
transmission was successfully demonstrated by researcher Dr. Joseph
Sharp in 1973, announced at a seminar at the University of Utah in
1974, and in the journal “
American
Psychologist
” in the
March 1975 issue, the article was titled “
Microwaves
and Behavior
” by Dr. Don
Justesen (1975). [4]

In 2002, the US Air Force Research
Laboratory patented precisely such a device: “a nonlethal weapon
which includes (1) a neuro-electromagnetic device, which broadcast
sound into the skull of persons or animals by way of pulse-modulated
microwave radiation; and (2) a silent sound device, which can
transmit ultrasound (above human hearing) into the skull of mammals.”
NOTE: The sound modulation might be voice or audio subliminal
messages. One application of voice-to-skull uses was an electronic
scarecrow to frighten birds in the vicinity of airports. [5]

  1. Mind reading
    technologies

A team of world-leading
neuroscientists has developed a powerful technique that allowed them
to look deep inside a person’s brain, and to read their intentions
before they act.

The research broke controversial
new ground in scientists’ ability to probe people’s minds and
eavesdrop on their thoughts, ethically to be condemned in its
technology and applications.

Using the scanner, we could look
around the brain for this information and read out something that
from the outside, there is no way you possibly could tell is in
there. It is like shining a torch around, looking for writing on a
wall,” said John Dylan Haynes at the Max Planck Institute for Human
Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Germany in 2007, who led the study
with colleagues at University College London and Oxford University.

In 2011, neuroscientists at the
University of California Berkeley put electrodes inside the skulls of
brain surgery patients to monitor information from their temporal
lobe, which was involved in the processing of speech and images. As
the patient listened to someone speaking, a computer program analysed
how the brain processed and reproduced the words they had heard.

The scientists believed the
technique could also be used to read and report what they were
thinking of saying next.

In the journal Plos
Biology
, they wrote that
it took attempts at mind reading to “a whole new level.”

Harvard’s Buckner won the
Alzheimer’s award for reading our minds in 2011. Researchers had
shown a capability to read a subject’s mind by remotely measuring
their brain activity. This technique could even extract information
from individuals, who were unaware of themselves. [6]

Those mind reading technologies use
EEC with decoding of neurological signals remotely with or without an
implant through satellite or through TV Mobile transmission towers.
The following data was from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab, “The
sensitivity of our deep-space tracking antennas located around the
world is truly amazing. The antennas must capture Voyager information
from a signal so weak that the power striking the antenna is only 10
exponent -16 watts (1 part in 10 quadrillion). A modern-day
electronic digital watch operates at a power level 20 billion times
greater than this feeble level.”

Scientists believed the weak radio
emission of a cubic centimeter of brain matter was within the
detectable limits of the satellite. It was technically possible for a
satellite to detect your thoughts, emotions and perceptions, and pass
that information to a computer for interpretation. [7]

  1. Patents of Mind
    Control Technologies

Many patents had indicated the
existence of mind control technologies, such as:

USP # 6,729,337 (May 4, 2004), Sony
owned a patent “
Sony
Brain Waves Manipulation By Ultrasound”

for an “ultrasound array” that supposedly stimulated your brain
waves to simulate sensory experiences causing its users to experience
smells, tastes and even touch without external stimuli.

USP # 6,488,617 (December 3, 2002),
Nervous System Manipulation
by EM Fields from Monitors.

  1. More evidence to prove
the existence of mind control technologies.

There is sufficient evidence to
prove the existence of mind control technologies. I will only give a
few as example.

Microwave Irradiation of the
U.S. Embassy in Moscow,
review
of its history and studies to determine whether or not related health
defects were experienced by employees assigned in the period,
1953-1977, prepared at the request of Howard W. Cannon, chairman,
Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, United States
Senate, published in 1979 by U.S. Government Printing Office in
Washington, disclose that since 1952, the Soviet government began
directing microwave beams at the U.S. embassy in Moscow.

A study funded by the Defense
Advanced Research Projects Agency
,
has perfected the art of using electrical signals to manipulate the
color of a squid’s iridescent skin over the entire color spectrum.
The Marine Biological
Laboratory
in
Massachusetts carried out the research.[8] If they could manipulate
animals, they could manipulate humans too.

A former KGB officer has divulged
secrets of special mind control techniques that security services in
developed nations used during and after the Cold War, a Russian
government daily said in December 2006.

General Boris Ratnikov, who served
in the KGB department for Moscow and the Moscow Region, told
Rossiiskaya Gazeta that people in power had resorted to various
methods of manipulating individuals’ thoughts since ancient times
and that it was hardly surprising that secret services adopted the
practice when it acquired a scientific foundation in the twentieth
century.

In the mid-eighties, about fifty
research institutes in the Soviet Union studied remote mind control
techniques backed by substantial government funding, but all such
research efforts were halted with the demise of the Soviet empire in
the early nineties.

Ratnikov, who subsequently served
as deputy head and then senior consultant at the Federal Guard
Service from 1991 to 1997, said his department was in charge of
safeguarding top officials in post-Soviet Russia against any external
influence on their sub-conscious.

The general stated emphatically
that he and his colleagues had never manipulated the minds of the
then president, Boris Yeltsin, or of economic reformer Yegor Gaidar,
but claimed to have used mind-reading to save Russia’s first
president and the country from a war with China.

Yeltsin had planned to visit Japan
in 1992, but Ratnikov’s department detected attempts to “program”
the president’s mind, to make him give the Kuril Islands back to
Japan. The move would have led to demands from China that it regains
its disputed territories from Russia as well, a conflict that could
have sparked a war between the two neighbors. Yeltsin, therefore, was
forced to cancel the trip.

 Another of the general’s
revelations is that senior officials in Western Europe and the United
States unwittingly provided information to his department, which was
able to read their minds thanks to Soviet-era scientific
achievements.

In the early nineties, Ratnikov and
his colleagues “scanned” the mind of new U.S. Ambassador Robert
Strauss to see that the embassy building contained equipment to exert
psychotronic influence on Moscow residents but, according to the
general, it had been deactivated. [9]

Research into electromagnetic
spectrums weapons had been secretly carried out in the US and Russia
since the fifties. Plans to introduce the super-weapons were
announced quietly in March 2012 by Russian Defense Minister Anatoly
Serdyukov, fulfilling a little-noticed election campaign pledge by
president-elect Putin. Mr. Serdyukov said, “The development of
weaponry based on new physics principles – Direct Energy weapons,
Geophysical weapons, Wave-energy weapons, Genetic weapons,
Psychotronic weapons, and so on – is part of the state arms
procurement programme for 2011-2020.”[10]

There was no doubt that,
notwithstanding that governments still covered-up the development and
research of mind control technologies, the government owned advanced
technologies, which could read mankind thoughts remotely and subvert
an individual’s sense of control over their own thinking, behavior,
emotions or decision making by attacking the brain and nervous system
with electromagnetic frequencies.

As early as 1998, scientists had
warned that the control and manipulation of a human brain was a
terrifying possibility. Lieutenant Colonel Timothy L. Thomas, US Army
(ret), published an article in the military journal
Parameters
which likened the mind to a new battlefield. He quoted a Russian army
major in relation to weapons that affected the mind, “It is
completely clear that the state, which is first to create such
weapons, will achieve incomparable superiority.” Thomas expressed
concern about “information dominance,” though he stopped short of
the moral implications. (Timothy L. Thomas,
The
Mind Has No Firewall
,
Parameters,
Spring 1998, pp. 84-92) [11]

Mr. Peter Phillips, Lew Brown and
Bridget Thornton raised high concerns of human rights violations
implemented with electromagnetic spectrums weapons in the article “
US
Electromagnetic Weapons and Human Rights.

(Peter Phillips, Lew Brown and Bridget Thornton,

Carole Smith, a British
psychoanalyst, in recent years has been openly critical of government
use of intrusive technology on non-consenting citizens, in the

The European Parliament
A4-0005/1999
Paragraph 27 called for a worldwide ban on weapons that might enable
“any form” of the “manipulation of human beings.” [13]

USA Representative Dennis Kucinich
introduced bill
H.R. 2977
(2001), which was referred to the Committee on Science, and in
addition to the Committees on Armed Services, and International
Relations, for a period to be subsequently determined by the speaker,
in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the
jurisdiction of the committee concerned.

H.R. 2977
(2001) preserved the cooperative, peaceful uses of space for the
benefit of all humankind by permanently prohibiting the basing of
weapons in space by the United States, and required the President to
take action to adopt and implement a world treaty banning space-based
weapons.

In this bill, the terms “weapon”
and “weapons system” included a device capable of the following:
“directing a source of energy, including molecular or atomic
energy, subatomic particle beams, electromagnetic radiation, plasma,
or extremely low frequency (ELF) or ultralow frequency (ULF) energy
radiation, against that object,” “through the use of land-based,
sea-based, or space-based systems using radiation, electromagnetic,
psychotronic, sonic, laser, or other energies directed at individual
persons or targeted populations for the purpose of information war,
mood management, or mind control of such persons or populations.”

The United Nations Institute for
Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) formally listed a special category of
psychotronic (psycho = “mind” & tronic= “electronic”)
mind control and other electromagnetic resonance weapons in their
2002 Media Guide to Disarmament. [14]

The shadows of Hiroshima: Haunting imprints of people killed by ...

What is the science behind atomic shadows during the bombing of ...

Hiroshima 6 augustus 1945……..

Pilger gebruikte e.e.a. in zijn film
‘The Comin War with China’, waarvoor hij het Bikini atol bezocht waar

agressie…..’ (wie zijn er internationaal vooral agressief?? Juist, het
westen onder aanvoering van de VS!!) Daarmee is het gebruik van het
kernwapen dichterbij dan
ooit tevoren…..

Another
Hiroshima is Coming… Unless We Stop It Now

By
John Pilger

July 04, 2020
Information
Clearing House

– When I first went to Hiroshima in 1967, the shadow on the steps was
still there. It was an almost perfect impression of a human being at
ease: legs splayed, back bent, one hand by her side as she sat
waiting for a bank to open.

At a quarter past
eight on the morning of August 6, 1945, she and her silhouette were
burned into the granite.

I stared at the shadow
for an hour or more, then I walked down to the river where the
survivors still lived in shanties.

I met a man called
Yukio, whose chest was etched with the pattern of the shirt he was
wearing when the atomic bomb was dropped.

He described a huge
flash over the city, “a bluish light, something like an electrical
short”, after which wind blew like a tornado and black rain fell.
“I was thrown on the ground and noticed only the stalks of my
flowers were left. Everything was still and quiet, and when I got up,
there were people naked, not saying anything. Some of them had no
skin or hair. I was certain I was dead.”

Nine years later, I
returned to look for him and he was dead from leukaemia.

No radioactivity in
Hiroshima ruin” said
The
New York Times
front
page on 13 September, 1945, a classic of planted disinformation.
“General Farrell,” reported William H. Lawrence, “denied
categorically that [the atomic bomb] produced a dangerous, lingering
radioactivity.”

Only one reporter,
Wilfred Burchett, an Australian, had braved the perilous journey to
Hiroshima in the immediate aftermath of the atomic bombing, in
defiance of the Allied occupation authorities, which controlled the
“press pack”.

I write this as a
warning to the world,” reported Burchett in the London
Daily
Express
  of
September 5,1945. Sitting in the rubble with his Baby Hermes
typewriter, he described hospital wards filled with people with no
visible injuries who were dying from what he called “an atomic
plague”.

For this, his press
accreditation was withdrawn, he was pilloried and smeared. His
witness to the truth was never forgiven.

The atomic bombing of
Hiroshima and Nagasaki was an act of premeditated mass murder that
unleashed a weapon of intrinsic criminality. It was justified by lies
that form the bedrock of America’s war propaganda in the 21st
century, casting a new enemy, and target – China.

During the 75 years
since Hiroshima, the most enduring lie is that the atomic bomb was
dropped to end the war in the Pacific and to save lives.

Even without the
atomic bombing attacks,” concluded the United States Strategic
Bombing Survey of 1946, “air supremacy over Japan could have
exerted sufficient pressure to bring about unconditional surrender
and obviate the need for invasion. “Based on a detailed
investigation of all the facts, and supported by the testimony of the
surviving Japanese leaders involved, it is the Survey’s opinion
that … Japan would have surrendered even if the atomic bombs had
not been dropped, even if Russia had not entered the war [against
Japan] and even if no invasion had been planned or contemplated.”

The National Archives
in Washington contains documented Japanese peace overtures as early
as 1943. None was pursued. A cable sent on May 5, 1945 by the German
ambassador in Tokyo and intercepted by the US made clear the Japanese
were desperate to sue for peace, including “capitulation even if
the terms were hard”. Nothing was done.

The US Secretary of
War, Henry Stimson, told President Truman he was “fearful” that
the US Air Force would have Japan so “bombed out” that the new
weapon would not be able “to show its strength”. Stimson later
admitted that “no effort was made, and none was seriously
considered, to achieve surrender merely in order not to have to use
the [atomic] bomb”.

Stimson’s foreign
policy colleagues — looking ahead to the post-war era they were
then shaping “in our image”, as Cold War planner George Kennan
famously put it — made clear they were eager “to browbeat the
Russians with the [atomic] bomb held rather ostentatiously on our
hip”. General Leslie Groves, director of the Manhattan Project that
made the atomic bomb, testified: “There was never any illusion on
my part that Russia was our enemy, and that the project was conducted
on that basis.”

The day after
Hiroshima was obliterated, President Harry Truman voiced his
satisfaction with the “overwhelming success” of “the
experiment”.

The “experiment”
continued long after the war was over. Between 1946 and 1958, the
United States exploded 67 nuclear bombs in the Marshall Islands in
the Pacific: the equivalent of more than one Hiroshima every day for
12 years.

The human and
environmental consequences were catastrophic. During the filming of
my documentary,
The
Coming War on China
,
I chartered a small aircraft and flew to Bikini Atoll in the
Marshalls. It was here that the United States exploded the world’s
first Hydrogen Bomb. It remains poisoned earth. My shoes registered
“unsafe” on my Geiger counter. Palm trees stood in unworldly
formations. There were no birds.

I trekked through the
jungle to the concrete bunker where, at 6.45 on the morning of March
1, 1954, the button was pushed. The sun, which had risen, rose again
and vaporised an entire island in the lagoon, leaving a vast black
hole, which from the air is a menacing spectacle: a deathly void in a
place of beauty.

The radioactive
fall-out spread quickly and “unexpectedly”. The official history
claims “the wind changed suddenly”. It was the first of many
lies, as declassified documents and the victims’ testimony reveal.

Gene Curbow, a
meteorologist assigned to monitor the test site, said, “They knew
where the radioactive fall-out was going to go. Even on the day of
the shot, they still had an opportunity to evacuate people, but
[people] were not evacuated; I was not evacuated…

The United States
needed some guinea pigs to study what the effects of radiation would
do.”

Like Hiroshima, the
secret of the Marshall Islands was a calculated experiment on the
lives of large numbers of people. This was Project 4.1, which began
as a scientific study of mice and became an experiment on “human
beings exposed to the radiation of a nuclear weapon”.

The Marshall Islanders
I met in 2015 — like the survivors of Hiroshima I interviewed in
the 1960s and 70s — suffered from a range of cancers, commonly
thyroid cancer; thousands had already died. Miscarriages and
stillbirths were common; those babies who lived were often deformed
horribly.

Unlike Bikini, nearby
Rongelap atoll had not been evacuated during the H-Bomb test.
Directly downwind of Bikini, Rongelap’s skies darkened and it
rained what first appeared to be snowflakes.  Food and
water were contaminated; and the population fell victim to cancers.
That is still true today.

I met Nerje Joseph,
who showed me a photograph of herself as a child on Rongelap. She had
terrible facial burns and much of her was hair missing. “We were
bathing at the well on the day the bomb exploded,” she said. “White
dust started falling from the sky. I reached to catch the powder. We
used it as soap to wash our hair. A few days later, my hair started
falling out.”

Lemoyo Abon said,
“Some of us were in agony. Others had diarrhoea. We were terrified.
We thought it must be the end of the world.”

US official archive
film I included in my film refers to the islanders as “amenable
savages”. In the wake of the explosion, a US Atomic Energy Agency
official is seen boasting that Rongelap “is by far the most
contaminated place on earth”, adding, “it will be interesting to
get a measure of human uptake when people live in a contaminated
environment.”

American scientists,
including medical doctors, built distinguished careers studying the
“human uptake’. There they are in flickering film, in their white
coats, attentive with their clipboards. When an islander died in his
teens, his family received a sympathy card from the scientist who
studied him.

I have reported from
five nuclear “ground zeros” throughout the world — in Japan,
the Marshall Islands, Nevada, Polynesia and Maralinga in Australia.
Even more than my experience as a war correspondent, this has taught
me about the ruthlessness and immorality of great power: that
is,
 imperial power,
whose cynicism is the true enemy of humanity.

This struck me
forcibly when I filmed at Taranaki Ground Zero at Maralinga in the
Australian desert. In a dish-like crater was an obelisk on which was
inscribed: “A British atomic weapon was test exploded here on 9
October 1957”. On the rim of the crater was this sign:

WARNING:
RADIATION HAZARD

Radiation levels for a
few hundred metres

around this point may
be above those considered

safe for permanent
occupation.

For as far as the eye
could see, and beyond, the ground was irradiated. Raw plutonium lay
about, scattered like talcum powder: plutonium is so dangerous to
humans that a third of a milligram gives a 50 per cent chance of
cancer.

The only people who
might have seen the sign were Indigenous Australians, for whom there
was no warning. According to an official account, if they were lucky
“they were shooed off like rabbits”.

Today, an
unprecedented campaign of propaganda is shooing us all off like
rabbits. We are not meant to question the daily torrent of
anti-Chinese rhetoric, which is rapidly overtaking the torrent of
anti-Russia rhetoric. Anything Chinese is bad, anathema, a threat:
Wuhan …. Huawei. How confusing it is when “our” most reviled
leader says so.

The current phase of
this campaign began not with Trump but with Barack Obama, who in 2011
flew to Australia to declare the greatest build-up of US naval forces
in the Asia-Pacific region since World War Two. Suddenly, China was a
“threat”. This was nonsense, of course. What was threatened was
America’s unchallenged psychopathic view of itself as the richest,
the most successful, the most “indispensable” nation.

What was never in
dispute was its prowess as a bully — with more than 30 members of
the United Nations suffering American sanctions of some kind and a
trail of the blood running through defenceless countries bombed,
their governments overthrown, their  elections interfered
with, their resources plundered.

Obama’s declaration
became known as the “pivot to Asia”. One of its principal
advocates was his Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, who, as
WikiLeaks revealed, wanted to rename the Pacific Ocean “the
American Sea”.

Whereas Clinton never
concealed her warmongering, Obama was a maestro of marketing.”I
state clearly and with conviction,” said the new president in 2009,
“that America’s commitment is to seek the peace and security of a
world without nuclear weapons.”

Obama increased
spending on nuclear warheads faster than any president since the end
of the Cold War. A “usable” nuclear weapon was developed. Known
as the B61 Model 12, it means, according to General James Cartwright,
former vice-chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, that “going smaller
[makes its use] more thinkable”.

The target is China.
Today, more than 400 American military bases almost encircle China
with missiles, bombers, warships and nuclear
weapons
. From Australia north through the Pacific to South-East
Asia, Japan and Korea and across Eurasia to Afghanistan and India,
the bases form, as one US strategist told me, “the perfect noose”.

A study by the RAND
Corporation – which, since Vietnam, has planned America’s wars –
is

entitled War with China: Thinking Through the Unthinkable.
Commissioned by the US Army, the authors evoke the infamous catch cry
of its chief Cold War strategist, Herman Kahn – “thinking the
unthinkable”. Kahn’s book, On Thermonuclear War, elaborated
a plan for a “winnable” nuclear war.

Kahn’s apocalyptic
view is shared by Trump’s Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, an
evangelical fanatic who believes in the “rapture of the End”. He
is perhaps the most dangerous man alive. “I was CIA director,” he
boasted, “We lied, we cheated, we stole. It was like we had entire
training courses.”  Pompeo’s obsession is China.

The endgame of
Pompeo’s extremism is rarely if ever discussed in the
Anglo-American media, where the myths and fabrications about China
are standard fare, as were the lies about Iraq. A virulent racism is
the sub-text of this propaganda. Classified “yellow” even though
they were white, the Chinese are the only ethnic group to have been
banned by an “exclusion act” from entering the United States,
because they were Chinese. Popular culture declared them sinister,
untrustworthy, “sneaky”, depraved, diseased, immoral.

An Australian
magazine,
The
Bulletin
,
was devoted to promoting fear of the “yellow peril” as if all of
Asia was about to fall down on the whites-only colony by the force of
gravity.

As the historian
Martin Powers writes, acknowledging China’s  modernism,
its secular morality and “contributions to liberal thought
threatened European face, so it became necessary to suppress China’s
role in the Enlightenment debate …. For centuries, China’s threat
to the myth of Western superiority has made it an easy target for
race-baiting.”

In the Sydney
Morning Herald
,
tireless China-basher Peter Hartcher described those who spread
Chinese influence in Australia as “rats, flies, mosquitoes and
sparrows”. Hartcher, who favourably quotes the American demagogue
Steve Bannon, likes to interpret the “dreams” of the current
Chinese elite, to which he is apparently privy. These are inspired by
yearnings for the “Mandate of Heaven” of 2,000 years ago.
Ad
nausea.

To combat this
“mandate”, the Australian government of Scott Morrison has
committed one of the most secure countries on earth, whose major
trading partner is China, to hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth
of American missiles that can be fired at China.

The trickledown is
already evident. In a country historically scarred by violent racism
towards Asians, Australians of Chinese descent have formed a
vigilante group to protect delivery riders. Phone videos show a
delivery rider punched in the face and a Chinese couple racially
abused in a supermarket. Between April and June, there were almost
400 racist attacks on Asian-Australians.

We are not your
enemy,” a high-ranking strategist in China told me, “but if you
[in the West] decide we are, we must prepare without delay.”
China’s arsenal is small compared with America’s, but it is
growing fast, especially the development of maritime missiles
designed to destroy fleets of ships.

For the first
time,” wrote Gregory Kulacki of the Union of Concerned Scientists,
“China is discussing putting its nuclear missiles on high alert so
that they can be launched quickly on warning of an attack… This
would be a significant and dangerous change in Chinese policy…”

In Washington, I met
Amitai Etzioni, distinguished professor of international affairs at
George Washington University, who wrote that a “blinding attack on
China” was planned, “with strikes that could be mistakenly
perceived [by the Chinese] as pre-emptive attempts to take out its
nuclear weapons, thus cornering them into a terrible
use-it-or-lose-it dilemma [that would] lead to nuclear war.”

In 2019, the US staged
its biggest single military exercise since the Cold War, much of it
in high secrecy. An armada of ships and long-range bombers rehearsed
an “Air-Sea Battle Concept for China” – ASB – blocking sea
lanes in the Straits of Malacca and cutting off China’s access to
oil, gas and other raw materials from the Middle East and Africa.

It is fear of such a
blockade that has seen China develop its Belt and Road Initiative
along the old Silk Road to Europe and urgently build strategic
airstrips on disputed reefs and islets in the Spratly Islands.

In Shanghai, I met
Lijia Zhang, a Beijing journalist and novelist, typical of a new
class of outspoken mavericks. Her best-selling book has the ironic
title Socialism Is Great! Having grown up in the chaotic,
brutal Cultural Revolution, she has travelled and lived in the US and
Europe. “Many Americans imagine,” she said, “that Chinese
people live a miserable, repressed life with no freedom whatsoever.
The [idea of] the yellow peril has never left them… They have no
idea there are some 500 million people being lifted out of poverty,
and some would say it’s 600 million.”

Modern China’s epic
achievements, its defeat of mass poverty, and the pride and
contentment of its people (measured forensically by American
pollsters such as Pew) are wilfully unknown or misunderstood in the
West. This alone is a commentary on the lamentable state of Western
journalism and the abandonment of honest reporting.

China’s repressive
dark side and what we like to call its “authoritarianism” are the
facade we are allowed to see almost exclusively. It is as if we are
fed unending tales of the evil super-villain Dr. Fu Manchu. And it is
time we asked why: before it is too late to stop the next Hiroshima.

paar jaar terug overleden….

Hiroshima
Unlearned: Time to Tell the Truth About US Relations with Russia and
Finally Ban the Bomb

by ALICE
SLATER

Photograph

August
6th and 9th mark 74 years since the atomic bombing of Hiroshima
and Nagasaki, where only one nuclear bomb dropped on each city caused
the deaths of up to 146,000 people in Hiroshima and 80,000 people in
Nagasaki. Now, with the US decision to walk away from the 1987
Intermediate-Range Nuclear Force (INF) negotiated with the Soviet
Union, we are once again staring into the abyss of one of the most
perilous nuclear challenges since the height of the Cold War.

With
its careful verification and inspections, the INF Treaty eliminated a
whole class of missiles that threatened peace and stability in
Europe. Now the US is leaving the treaty
on
the grounds
that
Moscow is developing and deploying a missile with a range prohibited
by the treaty. Russia denies the charges and accuses the US of
violating the treaty.  The US rejected repeated Russian requests
to work out the differences in order to preserve the Treaty.

The
US withdrawal should be seen in the context of the historical
provocations visited upon the Soviet Union and now Russia by the
United States and the nations under the US nuclear “umbrella” in
NATO and the Pacific. The US has been driving the nuclear arms race
with Russia from the dawn of the nuclear age:

In
1946 Truman
rejected
Stalin’s offer to turn the bomb over to the newly formed UN under
international supervision, after which the Russians made their own
bomb;

Reagan
rejected Gorbachev’s offer to give up Star Wars as a condition for
both countries to eliminate all their nuclear weapons when the wall
came down and Gorbachev released all of Eastern Europe from Soviet
occupation, miraculously, without a shot;

The
US pushed NATO right up to Russia’s borders, despite promises when
the wall fell that NATO would not expand it one inch eastward of a
unified Germany;

Clinton
bombed Kosovo, bypassing Russia’s veto in the UN Security Council
and violating the UN treaty we signed never to commit a war of
aggression against another nation unless under imminent threat of
attack;

Clinton
refused Putin’s offer to each cut our massive nuclear arsenals to
1000 bombs each and call all the others to the table to negotiate for
their elimination, provided we stopped developing missile sites in
Romania;

Bush
walked out of the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and put the new
missile base in Romania with another to open shortly under Trump in
Poland, right in Russia’s backyard;

Bush
and Obama blocked any discussion in 2008 and 2014 on Russian and
Chinese proposals for a space weapons ban in the consensus-bound
Committee for Disarmament in Geneva;

Obama’s rejected Putin’s
offer to negotiate a treaty to ban cyber war;

Trump
now walked out of the INF Treaty;

From
Clinton through Trump, the US never ratified the 1992 Comprehensive
Test Ban Treaty as Russia has, and has performed more than 20
underground sub-critical tests on the Western Shoshone’s sanctified
land at the Nevada test site.  Since plutonium is blown up with
chemicals that don’t cause a chain reaction, the US claims these
tests don’t violate the treaty;

Obama,
and now Trump, pledged over one trillion dollars for the next 30
years for two new nuclear bomb factories in Oak Ridge and Kansas
City, as well as new submarines, missiles, airplanes, and warheads!

What
has Russia had to say about these US affronts to international
security and negotiated treaties? Putin at his State of the Nation
address in March 2018
said:

I
will speak about the newest systems of Russian strategic weapons that
we are creating in response to the unilateral withdrawal of the
United States of America from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and
the practical deployment of their missile defence systems both
in the US and beyond their national borders.

I
would like to make a short journey into the recent past. Back in
2000, the US announced its withdrawal from the Anti-Ballistic
Missile Treaty. Russia was categorically against this. We saw the
Soviet-US ABM Treaty signed in 1972 as the cornerstone of the
international security system. Under this treaty, the parties
had the right to deploy ballistic missile defence systems only in
one of its regions. Russia deployed these systems around Moscow, and
the US around its Grand Forks land-based ICBM base. Together
with the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, the ABM treaty not
only created an atmosphere of trust but also prevented either party
from recklessly using nuclear weapons, which would have
endangered humankind, because the limited number of ballistic
missile defence systems made the potential aggressor vulnerable
to a response strike.

We
did our best to dissuade the Americans from withdrawing from the
treaty.

All
in vain.
 The
US pulled out of the treaty in 2002. Even after that we tried to
develop constructive dialogue with the Americans. We proposed working
together in this area to ease concerns and maintain the atmosphere of
trust. At one point, I thought that a compromise was possible, but
this was not to be. All our proposals, absolutely all of them, were
rejected. And then we said that we would have to improve our mode
rn
strike systems to protect our security”.

Despite
promises made in the 1970 Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) that the
five nuclear weapons states–US, UK, Russia, France, China–would
eliminate their nuclear weapons while all the other nations of the
world promised not to get them (except for India, Pakistan, and
Israel, which also acquired nuclear weapons), there are still nearly
14,000 nuclear bombs on the planet. All but 1,000 of them are in the
US and Russia, while the seven other countries, including North
Korea, have about 1000 bombs between them.  If the US and Russia
can’t settle their differences and honor their promise in the NPT
to eliminate their nuclear weapons, the whole world will continue to
live under what President Kennedy described as a nuclear Sword of
Damocles, threatened with unimaginable catastrophic humanitarian
suffering and destruction.

To
prevent a nuclear catastrophe, in 2017, 122 nations adopted a new
Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). It calls for a
ban on nuclear weapons just as the world had banned chemical and
biological weapons.  The ban treaty provides a pathway for
nuclear weapons states to join and dismantle their arsenals under
strict and effective verification. The International Campaign to
Abolish Nuclear Weapons, which received the Nobel Peace Prize for its
efforts, is working for the treaty to enter into force by enrolling
50 nations to ratify the treaty.  As of today, 70 nations have
signed the treaty and 24 have ratified it, although none of them are
nuclear weapons states or the US alliance states under the nuclear
umbrella.

With
this new opportunity to finally ban the bomb and end the nuclear
terror,  let us tell the truth about what happened between the
US and Russia that brought us to this perilous moment and put the
responsibility where it belongs to open up a path for true peace and
reconciliation so that never again will anyone on our  planet
ever be threatened with the terrible consequences of nuclear war.

was…..

How
Big Brother Grips Americans’ Minds to Support Invasions

How Big Brother Grips Americans’ Minds to Support Invasions

ERIC
ZUESSE
 |
08.12.2018 |
WORLD AMERICAS

On
November 29th, Gallup headlined
“Democrats
Lead Surge in Belief U.S. Should Be World Leader”
 and
reported that “Three-fourths (75%) of Americans today think the
United States has ‘a special responsibility to be the leading
nation in world affairs,’ up from 66% in 2010. The surge is driven
by Democrats, whose belief in this idea has increased from 61% eight
years ago to 81% now.” This finding comes even after the lie-based
and catastrophic U.S. invasions of Iraq in 2003, and of Libya in 2011
(and of so many others, such as Afghanistan, where the U.S. and
Sauds
created
the Taliban in 1979
).
Americans — now even increasingly — want ‘their’ (which
is
actually
America’s billionaires’
)
Government to be virtually the world’s government, policing the
world. They want this nation’s Government to be determining what
international laws will be enforced around the world, and to be
enforcing them. Most Americans don’t want the United Nations to
have power over the U.S. (its
billionaires’)
Government, but instead want the U.S. Government (its billionaires)
to have power over the United Nations (which didn’t authorize any
of those evil, lie-based, U.S. invasions).

Not
only would doing this bankrupt all constructive domestic functions
(health, education, infrastructure, etc.) of the U.S. federal
Government, but it would also increase the global carnage, as if the
U.S. Government hasn’t already been doing enough of that, for
decades now.

The
leadership for this supremacist craving comes straight from America’s
top, not from the masses that are being sampled by the Gallup
organization, who only reflect it — they are duped by their
leaders. Here is how U.S. President Barack Obama (a Nobel Peace Prize
winner in 2009, for
nothing
at all
 but
his
‘kindly’
but insincere verbiage
 when
he had been a candidate) stated this widespread delusional American
belief in American global moral supremacy, when addressing the
graduating class at West Point Military Academy, on 28 May 2014:

The
United States is and remains the one indispensable
nation. [
Every
other nation is therefore ‘dispensable’; we therefore now have
“Amerika, Amerika über alles, über alles in der Welt”.]
That
has been true for the century passed and it will be true for the
century to come. … America must always lead on the world stage.

This
had certainly not been the objective of U.S. President
Franklin Delano Roosevelt when he set up the U.N. just before his
death in 1945; he instead wanted the U.N. to evolve into a democratic
government of the world, with elected representatives of each and
every one of the world’s governments — to evolve into
becoming
the
global international republic
 —
regardless of whether or not the U.S. Government approves or
disapproves of another nation’s government. The idea on which the
U.N. was founded was not to involve the U.S. Government in the
internal affairs of other nations, not to be the judge jury and
executioner of other governments that it doesn’t like, nor to
dictate what other nations should or should not do within the given
nation’s boundaries. FDR intended that there instead be
democratically represented, at the U.N., each and every nation, and
each and every people within that global government, where each of
these national governments is (hopefully but not necessarily) a
democracy.
FDR
was just as opposed to dictatorship internationally, as he was
opposed to dictatorship nationally
,
and he recognized that inevitably some governments will disapprove of
other governments, but he was deeply committed to the view that a
need exists for laws and law-enforcement
between nations,
on an international level, and not only
within the
individual nations, and that each nation is sacrosanct on its own
internal laws. He respected national sovereignty, and opposed
international empire. (This was his basic disagreement with Winston
Churchill, then, and with American leaders such as Obama and Trump
now.) Unlike President Obama (and evidently unlike the vast majority
of today’s Americans) FDR didn’t want this international
government to be an American function, but instead an entirely
separate international governmental function, in which there is no
international dictatorship whatsoever — not American, and not by
any other country. He knew that
this
is the only stable basis for international peace, and for avoiding a
world-annihilating World War III

Barack
Obama rejected FDR’s vision, and advocated for the United
States as being (and even as if it already had been for a century)
virtually the government over the entire world, which “must always
lead on the world stage.” Adolf Hitler had had that very same
international vision for his own country, Germany, “the
Thousand-Year Reich,” but he lost World War II; and, then, when FDR
died, Hitler’s vision increasingly took over iHoen America, so
that
ideologically, FDR
actually lost WW II, when Harry S. Truman took over the White House
and increasingly thereafter, until today, when
the
U.S. commits more invasions of foreign countries than do all other
nations in the world combined
.
Americans (apparently, as shown in this and other polls)
like this,
and want more of it.
Nobody
else does.
 For
example, nobody (except the U.S. and Saudi and Israeli aristocracies
and their supporters worldwide, which are very few people) supports
the U.S. regime’s reinstitution of sanctions against Iran, which
the U.S. regime is imposing as the global dictator. America’s
economic sanctions are like spitting into the face of FDR, who had
opposed such imperialistic fascism in the more overtly military form
when Hitler’s regime was imposing it. It’s also spitting at the
U.N.

This
latest Gallup finding displays an increase, but nothing that’s at
all anomalous as compared to the decades-long reality of
imperialistic U.S. culture.
For
decades now, Gallup’s polling has shown that the most respected of
all institutions by the American people is the nation’s military
 —
more than the church, more than the Presidency, more than the U.S.
Supreme Court, more than the press, more than the schools, more than
anything. America is invasion-nation. This is true
even
after
 the
2003 invasion of Iraq on the basis of
blatant
lies
,
which
destroyed Iraq
— a nation that had never invaded nor even threatened to invade the
United States. The American people are, resolutely, bloodthirsty for
conquest, even after having been
fooled into
that
evil invasion,
and subsequent decades-long military occupation in Iraq, and
after
subsequent conquests
or attempted conquests, in Libya,
Syria,
Yemen, and elsewhere — all destroying nations that had never
invaded nor even threatened America. Why? How did this mass-insanity,
of evil, come to be?

How
is this aggressive nationalism even possible, in
America’s ‘
democracy’? It’s actually
no democracy at all
,
and the public are being constantly fooled to think that it is a
democracy, and this deception is essential in order for the public to
tolerate this Government, and to tolerate the media that lie for it.
This widespread deceit requires
constant
cooperation of the ‘news’-media
 —
and these are the same ‘news’-media that
hid
from the public, in 2002, that the U.S. Government was outright lying
about “WMD in Iraq.”

The
public simply do not learn. That’s a tragic fact. Largely, this
fact results from reality being hidden by the ‘news’-media; but,
even now, long after the fake ‘news’ in 2002, about the U.S.
regime’s having possessed secret and conclusive evidence of
“Saddam’s WMD,” the published ‘history’ about that invasion
still does not acknowledge the public’s having been lied-to at that
time, by its Government, and by the ‘news’-media. So,
the public live, and culturally swim, in
an
ongoing river of lies
,
both as its being ‘news’, and subsequently as its having been
‘history’. This is why the public do not learn: they are being
constantly deceived. And they (as Gallup’s polls
prove) tolerate being constantly deceived. The public do not
rebel against it. They don’t reject either the politicians, or the
‘news’-media. They don’t demand that the American public
control the American Government and that America’s billionaires
lose that control — especially over the ‘news’-media.

Honesty
is no longer an operative American value, if it ever was. That’s
how, and why, Big Brother (the operation by the
international-corporate billionaires) grips Americans’ minds to
support foreign Invasions. Americans support liars, and it all comes
from the top; it’s directed from the top. It is bipartisan, from
both Democratic Party billionaires and Republican Party
billionaires.
National
politicians will lose their seats if they disobey.

A
good example, of this Big-Brother operation, is America’s
Politifact, the online site which is at America’s crossover where
‘news’ and ‘history’ meet one-another. It’s controlled by
billionaires
such
as
 the
one who founded
Craigslist.
Millions of Americans go to Politifact in order to determine what is
true and what is false that is being widely published about current
events. The present writer sometimes links to their articles, where I
have independently verified that there are no misrepresentations in
an article. But, like the ‘news’-media that it judges, Politifact
is also a propaganda-agency for
the
(U.S.-Saud-Israeli) Deep State
,
and so it deceives on the most critically important international
matters. An example of this occurred right after
the
U.S. regime had overthrown in February 2014 in a bloody coup the
democratically elected Government of Ukraine, and replaced it by a
rabidly anti-Russian racist fascist or nazi Government on Russia’s
doorstep, a regime that was selected by the rabidly anti-Russian (but
lying that it wasn’t) Obama regime
.
This Politifact article was dated 31 March 2014, right after over 90%
of Crimeans had just voted in a referendum, to rejoin Russia, and to
depart from Ukraine, which the Soviet dictator had transferred them
to, separating them from Russia, in 1954. (None of that history of
the matter was even mentioned by Politifact.) The Politifact article
was titled
“Viral
meme says United States has ‘invaded’ 22 countries in the past 20
years”
,
and it was designed to deceive readers into believing that “Russia’s
recent annexation of Crimea” reflected the real instance of
“invasion” that Americans should be outraged against — to
deflect away from America’s recent history as being the world’s
actual invasion-nation. This propaganda-article said nothing at all
about either Crimea or Ukraine except in its opening line: “A
Facebook meme argues that Americans are pretty two-faced when it
comes to Russia’s recent annexation of Crimea.” It then proceeded
to document that the exact number of American invasions during the
prior 20 years wasn’t 22, and so Politifact declared the allegation
“false” (as if the exact number were really the entire issue or
even the main one, and as if America’s scandalous recent history of
invasions were not).

So,
it’s on account of such drowning-in-propaganda, that the U.S.
public not only respect what U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower
derogatorily called the “military-industrial complex,” but
respect it above even the U.S. Presidency itself, and above all other
U.S. institutions (as Gallup’s constant polling demonstrates to be
the case).

Here’s
the reality: The same group of no more than a thousand super-wealthy
Americans control both the United States Government and the
weapons-manufacturing firms (such as Lockheed Martin), which are
the
only
corporations whose only customers are the U.S. Government and its
chosen allied governments
.
So, these few people actually control the U.S. Government’s foreign
relations, and foreign policies. They create and control their own
markets. This is the most politically active group of America’s
super-rich, because they own America’s international corporations
and because their business as owners of the military ones is military
policy and also diplomatic policy, including the conjoining of both
of those at the CIA and NSA, including the many coups that they (via
their Government) engineer. They also
control
all of the nation’s major news-media, which report international
affairs in such a manner as to determine which foreign governments
will be perceived by the mass of Americans to constitute the nation’s
‘enemies’ and therefore to be suitable targets for the U.S.
military and CIA to invade and conquer or otherwise “regime-change”
 —
such as have been the lands of North Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq,
Libya, Syria, Iran, North Korea, Yemen, Venezuela, etc., at various
times.
The
weapons-manufacturers won’t have any markets, at all, if there are
no ‘enemy’ nations that are deemed by the public to be suitable
targets for their weapons
. ‘Enemy’
nations, and not only ‘allies’ (or ‘allied’ nations), are
necessary, in order for the military business to produce the most
profits. Overwhelmingly, if not totally, the chosen ‘enemies’ are
nations that have
never
invaded nor even threatened to invade the United States
;
and, so, in order to keep this Government-funded business (the
war-profiteering and associated international
natural-resources
extractions
businesses)
growing and thriving, what’s essential is continuing control over
the nation’s ‘news’-media. As Walter Lippmann wrote in
1921,
“the
manufacture of consent”
 is
an essential part of this entire operation. It happens via the media.
Even Germany’s Nazis needed to do that. Any modern capitalist
dictatorship (otherwise called “fascism”) does. The U.S. regime,
being a capitalist dictatorship, certainly does. Physically, Hitler
lost, but his ideology won, he won even as nazism (racist fascism)
instead of merely as fascism, and this racism is shown because the
U.S. regime is rabidly racist anti-Russian (
not
merely anti-communist
),
and has been so for at least a century. (Maybe it’s what Obama
actually had secretly in mind when he said “That has been true for
the century passed and it will be true for the century to come.”
And Trump is no less a liar than Obama, and he continues this aim of
ultimately conquering Russia.) They say they’re only against
Russia’s leader Vladimir Putin, but Putin shows in all polls of
Russians, even in non-Russian polls, to be far more favorably viewed
by Russians than either Barack Obama or Donald Trump are viewed by
Americans. This is why regime-change-in-Russia is increasingly
becoming dominated by U.S. economic sanctions and military, and less
dominated by CIA and other coup-organizers. The actual dictatorship
is in America, and it requires participation by its
‘news’-media.
Demonizing
‘the enemy’
 is
therefore crucial. It is crucial preparation for any invasion.

The
United States Government spends
at
least as much money on its military as do all of the other
governments in the world combined
. Its
‘news’-media (that is to say, the media that are owned by, and
that are advertised in by, the corporations that are controlled by,
the same small group of billionaires — America’s billionaires —
who fund the political campaigns of both the Democratic Party’s and
the Republican Party’s nominees for the U.S. Congress and the
Presidency) may be partisan for one or the other of the nation’s
two political Parties, but they all are unitedly partisan for the
international corporations, such as Lockheed Martin, that America’s
billionaires control, and that sell only to the U.S. Government and
to the foreign governments that are allied with the U.S. Government.
They also are partisan for the U.S.-based oil and gas and mining
international corporations, which need to extract at the lowest costs
possible, no matter how much the given extractee-nation’s public
might suffer from the deal. “Three-fourths (75%) of Americans today
think the United States has ‘a special responsibility to be the
leading nation in world affairs,’” and the actual beneficiaries
of this mass-insanity are the owners of those U.S.-based
international corporations, the military and extraction giants.

Anthony
Cordesman, at the Center for Strategic and International Studies,
headlined on 15 August 2016,
“U.S.
Wars in Iraq, Syria, Libya and Yemen: What Are The Endstates?”
 and
he said, “Once again, the United States does not seem to be
learning from its past. The real test of victory is never tactical
success or even ending a war on favorable military terms, it is what
comes next.” But he ignored the main reason why these invasions had
occurred. America’s weapons-manufacturers won’t have any markets,
at all, if there are no ‘enemy’ nations that are deemed by the
American public to be suitable targets for their weapons. Cordesman
is there calculating success and failure on the basis of the myths
(such as that the U.S. Government cares about those “Endstates”),
not of the realities (that it craves targets). The realities focus
upon the desires of the owners and executives of the
weapons-manufacturers and the extraction-firms, for ongoing and
increased profits and executive bonuses, and not on the
needs of America’s soldiers nor on the national security of the
American people. Least of all, do they focus upon the needs — such
as the welfare, freedom, or democracy — of the Iraqi people, or of
the Syrian people, or of the Libyan people, or of the Yemenite
people. It’s all just lies, PR. Those invasions served their actual
main functions when they were occurring. “The Endstates” there
are almost irrelevant to those real purposes, the purposes
for which the invasions were, and are, actually being done.

Here’s
an ideal example of this mass mind-control: On 19 November 2017, Josh
Rogin at the
Washington
Post
 headlined “The
U.S. must prepare for Iran’s next move in Syria”
 and
reported that:

A
task force of senior former U.S. diplomatic and military officials
has come up with suggestions for how Trump could prevent Iran from
taking over what’s left of liberated Syria and fulfill his own
promise to contain Iranian influence in the region.

Most
urgently… the United States must impose real obstacles to Tehran’s
pursuit of total victory by the Assad regime in Syria,”
the
report
 by
the Jewish Institute for National Security of America states. “Time
is of the essence.”

The
underlying presumption there was that the U.S. regime has legitimate
authorization to be occupying the parts of Syria it has invaded and
now occupies, and that Iran does not. But the reality is that the
U.S. regime is occupying Syria instead of assisting Syria’s
Government to defeat the U.S.-Saud-Israeli invasion to overthrow and
replace Syria’s Government, by
stooges
who will be selected by the Saud family who own Saudi Arabia
,
and the reality is that Iran’s forces there are invitees who are
instead assisting Syria’s Government against the
Saudi-Israeli-American invasion. In other words: this WP article
is basically all lies. Furthermore, the Jewish Institute for National
Security of America is
a
front-organization
 for
the
fascist
regime that rules Israel
,
and the WP hid that fact, too, so its cited ‘expert’
was a mere PR agency for Israel’s aristocracy. So, this is
Deep-State propaganda, parading as ‘news’.

Americans
actually pay their private good money to subscribe to (subsidize)
such bad public ‘news’papers as that. The billionaire who happens
to own that particular ‘news’paper (the WP), Jeff Bezos, had
founded and leads Amazon, which receives almost all of its profits
from Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud-computing division, which
supplies the U.S. ‘Defense’ Department, CIA, and NSA.
For
example,
 “without
AWS and Prime, Amazon lost $2 billion in the 1st quarter of FY18. …
These losses come from Amazon’s retail business. About 60% of
Amazon’s revenue comes from retail and that’s where Amazon is
losing money.” Amazon is profitable because of what it sells mainly
to the Government, but also to other large U.S. international
corporations, and they all want to conquer Syria. None opposes that
evil goal. Although Bezos doesn’t like the Sauds, he has actually
been (at least until the Khashoggi matter) one of their main U.S.
media champions for the Sauds to take over Syria. It’s all just a
fool-the-public game. It works, it succeeds, and that’s what
Gallup’s polls are demonstrating. The public never learns. It’s a
fact, which has been proven in many different ways.

This
reality extends also to other nations, allies of the U.S.
aristocracy, and not only to the U.S. regime itself. For example, on
27 November 2018, a whistleblowing former UK Ambassador, Craig
Murray, who is a personal friend of Julian Assange, headlined
“Assange
Never Met Manafort. Luke Harding and the
Guardian Publish
Still More Blatant MI6 Lies”
,
and he proved that Britain’s
Guardian had
lied with total, and totally undocumented (and probably even totally
non-credible), fabrications, alleging that Julian Assange of
WikiLeaks had secretly met (in 2013, 2015, and 2016) with Paul
Manafort of the Trump campaign. The UK, of course, is a vassal-nation
of the U.S. aristocracy, and the
Guardian is
run by Democratic Party propagandists (paid indirectly by Democratic
Party and conservative Tony-Blair-wing Labour Party
billionaires)
and therefore fabricates in order to assist those Parties’ efforts
to impeach Trump and to dislodge Jeremy Corbyn from the Labour
Party’s leadership. However, each of America’s two political
parties (like the UK’s aristocracy itself) represents America’s
aristocracy, which, like Britain’s aristocracy, is united in
its
determination
to eliminate Assange
 —
they are as determined to do that to him, just as Saudi Crown Prince
Mohammed bin Salman al-Saud was determined to eliminate Jamal
Khashoggi. ‘Democracy’? This? It is Big Brother.

Only
if the population boycott lying individuals and organizations, is
democracy even possible to exist in a nation. Democracy can’t
possibly exist more than truth does. In political matters, deceit is
always treachery; and its practitioners, whenever the evidence for it
is overwhelming and irrefutable, should experience whatever the
standard penalty is for treachery. Only in a land such as that, can
democracy possibly exist. Elsewhere, it simply can’t.
The only basis for democracy, is truth. Deceit is for
dictators, not for democrats. And deceit reigns, in the U.S. and in
its allied countries. Is this really tolerable? Americans, at least,
tolerate it.

When
Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the far-right Rupert
Murdoch’s
Wall
Street Journal
editorialized
against Obama on 10 October 2009, by saying that
“What
this suggests to us — and to the Norwegians — is the end of what
has been called ‘American exceptionalism’.”
 Little
did anyone then know that after winning re-election upon the
basis of such war-mongering lies from Obama, as that
“America
remains the one indispensable nation”
,
Obama in February 2014 would go so far as to perpetrate a bloody
coup overthrowing
the democratically elected Government of one “dispensable”
nation, Ukraine; and, then, on 28 May of 2014, Obama would be
telling
America’s
future generals
,
that “The United States is and remains the one indispensable
nation” and that Obama would, in that speech, explicitly malign
Ukraine’s neighbor Russia. He did it, in this speech, which
implicitly called
all
nations except the U.S.
 “dispensable.”
He had carefully planned and orchestrated Americans’ hostility
toward Russia. His successor, Trump, lied saying that he wanted to
reverse Obama’s policies on this, and Trump promptly, once becoming
elected, increased and expanded those policies. Whatever a
deceitfully war-mongering country like this might be, it’s
certainly no democracy. Because democracy cannot be built upon a
ceaseless string of lies.

Matsui
De International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons

The
Netherlands, which hosts US nuclear weapons on its
territory, participated in the negotiation of the UN Treaty on
the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons but voted against its adoption on
7 July 2017. It was the only nation to do so
.
It claims that US
nuclear weapons are essential for its security.

Kortom

Hiroshima
Survivors Call for Nuclear Weapons Ban 73 Years After US Bombing

August
6, 2018 at 9:45 am

Written
by
Jessica
Corbett

(CD— While
European and Iranian leaders
work
to salvage
 the
Iran nuclear deal after President Donald Trump
withdrew the
United States in May and
reimposed his
first round of sanctions on Monday, activists, surviviors, and
Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui marked the 73rd anniversary of the U.S.
dropping an atomic bomb on the Japanese city by calling for the total
elimination of the world’s nuclear weapons.

Today,
with more than 14,000 nuclear warheads remaining, the likelihood is
growing that what we saw in Hiroshima after the explosion that day
will return, by intent or accident, plunging people into agony,”
Matsui warned in a “
moving” peace
declaration
delivered
at a “
somber
ceremony in Japan on Monday.

Sharing
statements from
hibakusha,
or those who survived the American bombing in 1945, the mayor
continued:

The hibakusha,
based on their intimate knowledge of the terror of nuclear weapons,
are ringing an alarm against the temptation to possess them. Year by
year, as
hibakusha decrease
in number, listening to them grows ever more crucial.
One
hibakusha who
was 20 says, “If nuclear weapons are used, every living thing will
be annihilated. Our beautiful Earth will be left in ruins. World
leaders should gather in the A-bombed cities, encounter our tragedy,
and, at a minimum, set a course toward freedom from nuclear weapons.
I want human beings to become good stewards of creation capable of
abolishing nuclear weapons.”

[…]

Another hibakusha who
was 20 makes this appeal: “I hope no such tragedy ever happens
again. We must never allow ours to fade into the forgotten past. I
hope from the bottom of my heart that humanity will apply our wisdom
to making our entire Earth peaceful.” If the human family forgets
history or stops confronting it, we could again commit a terrible
error. That is precisely why we must continue talking about
Hiroshima. Efforts to eliminate nuclear weapons must continue based
on intelligent actions by leaders around the world.

Nuclear
deterrence and nuclear umbrellas flaunt the destructive power of
nuclear weapons and seek to maintain international order by
generating fear in rival countries. This approach to guaranteeing
long-term security is inherently unstable and extremely dangerous.
World leaders must have this reality etched in their hearts as they
negotiate in good faith the elimination of nuclear arsenals, which is
a legal obligation under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Furthermore (NNPT), they must strive to make the Treaty on the Prohibition
of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) a milestone along the path to a
nuclear-weapon-free world.

Matsui
also urged the Japanese government to join the
historic United
Nations
treaty
to ban nuclear weapons
,
which was adopted by dozens of nations last year and
earned
the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) a Nobel
Peace Prize. Replicas of the award and diploma
are
on display
 at
the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum until Monday, and next will be
sent to Nagasaki, the city the U.S. bombed three days later.

ICAN
turned to Twitter on Monday to share Matsui’s words and urge all
nations to join the U.N. treaty:

Mayor Matsui spoke of the hopes of (survivors) for a nuclear-free world & the importance of memory: “If the human family forgets history or stops confronting it, we could again commit a terrible error. That is precisely why we must continue talking about Hiroshima.”

@nuclearban

This Peace Declaration paints a painfully vivid image of the devastation of a nuclear bomb, but also reminds us that there is reason for hope: the provides a path to a world free of nuclear weapons, and all nations must join the Treaty → http://www.nuclearban.org  🕊

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons was adopted by 122 nations on July 7, 2017.

nuclearban.org

Paul
Kawika Martin, senior director for policy and political affairs at
the U.S.-based group Peace Action, said in a
statement,
“Besides paying respect and commemorating the lives lost in the
atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, marking the anniversaries
offers the world an opportunity to reflect on the threat still posed
by nuclear weapons, and more importantly, an opportunity to organize
for their reduction and elimination.”

As
the only country to ever use nuclear weapons in war,” Martin
continued, “and as a signatory to the Nonproliferation Treaty, the
United States has both a moral and legal obligation to negotiate in
good faith with other nuclear-armed nations for the reduction and
elimination of the world’s nuclear arsenals, including our own.
Unfortunately, the Trump administration is instead moving forward
with plans to spend $1.7 trillion adjusted for inflation on nuclear
weapons over the next three decades.”

Several
other activists and anti-nuclear organizations used social media on
Monday to remember the bombing and demand that every nation work
toward outlawing such weapons:

Right now as you read this, men like Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin threaten every city on Earth with nuclear weapons that’d make Hiroshima look like a campfire — and one day, sooner or later, these weapons will be used. Unless we eliminate all of them. Everywhere.

Stephen Schwartz

@AtomicAnalyst

At this instant 73 years ago (8:15am August 6, local time), Hiroshima was destroyed by Little Boy, a 15-kiloton atomic bomb, which killed an estimated 66,000-80,000 men, women, and children, including 12 American POWs. By the end of 1945, as many as 140,000 people were dead.

Meanwhile,
students at Fukuyama Technical High School in Japan have unveiled a
virtual reality experience that enables users to see Hiroshima on the
day of the bombing. Their hope is that the VR project will discourage
future use of nuclear weapons.

Even
without language, once you see the images, you understand,” Mei
Okada, one of the students working on the
project,
told the Associated
Press
.
“That is definitely one of the merits of this VR experience.”

====================================

THE
HIROSHIMA LIE

THE
REAL REASON JAPAN SURRENDERED

WHAT
HAPPENED AFTER THE WAR

On
this day in 1945, the US military under the direction of President
Truman dropped a nuclear bomb on a civilian target killing over
80,000 people instantly.

Was
the attack on Hiroshima a military necessity?

No
and here’s why.

Two
facts:

1.
In terms of death and destruction, the Hiroshima nuclear attack
wasn’t the biggest attack on a Japanese city. The conventional
fire bombing of Tokyo killed far more.

2.
The Russians were poised to mount a massive invasion.

The
Imperial Family agreed to surrender because they were advised that
while the Japanese military might be able to hold off an American
invasion, it could not withstand a combined US and Russian attack.

By
the way, what was Japan fighting for?

To
line the pockets of the Imperial Family, the richest family in Japan.
That’s it.

They
planned the war, they ordered the war, they profited from it and they
were willing to sacrifice the civilian population to carry out their
goals.

For
example, billions of dollars worth of stolen gold and valuable art
(much of it scouted out years in advance) was shipped directly to the
Imperial compound in Tokyo. None of it has been returned.

As
a condition for surrender, the Imperial Family was allowed to remain
in power unpunished and they remain in power today.

Can
you imagine what would have happened to those murderous, thieving
bastards if the Russians had gotten to them first?

But
as always, the US government was ready to make a “deal” – in
this case to have a base to fight Communism.

After
the war, the US government also protected – and hired – veterans
of Japan’s Unit 731.

You’ve
heard of Nazi medical atrocities, but the Japanese program was
exponentially larger and its crimes were largely covered up with the
help of the US government which wanted access to the data and the
practitioners.

The
Deep State’s JFK Triumph Over Trump

October

Written
by
Ray
McGovern

Fifty-four
years after President Kennedy’s assassination, the CIA and FBI
demanded more time to decide what secrets to keep hiding – and a
chastened President Trump bowed to their power, observes ex-CIA
analyst Ray McGovern.

(CN— It
was summer 1963 when a senior official of CIA’s operations
directorate treated our Junior Officer Trainee (JOT) class to an
unbridled rant against President John F. Kennedy. He accused
JFK, among other things, of rank cowardice in refusing to send U.S.
armed forces to bail out Cuban rebels pinned down during the
CIA-launched invasion at the Bay of Pigs, blowing the chance to drive
Cuba’s Communist leader Fidel Castro from power.

It
seemed beyond odd that a CIA official would voice such scathing
criticism of a sitting President at a training course for those
selected to be CIA’s future leaders. I remember thinking to
myself, “This guy is unhinged; he would kill Kennedy, given the
chance.”

Our
special guest lecturer looked a lot like E. Howard Hunt, but more
than a half-century later, I cannot be sure it was he. Our notes
from such training/indoctrination were classified and kept under lock
and key.

At
the end of our JOT orientation, we budding Agency leaders had to make
a basic choice between joining the directorate for substantive
analysis or the operations directorate where case officers run spies
and organize regime changes (in those days, we just called the
process overthrowing governments).

I
chose the analysis directorate and, once ensconced in the brand new
headquarters building in Langley, Virginia, I found it strange that
subway-style turnstiles prevented analysts from going to the
“operations side of the house,” and vice versa. Truth be told, we
were never one happy family.

I
cannot speak for my fellow analysts in the early 1960s, but it never
entered my mind that operatives on the other side of the turnstiles
might be capable of assassinating a President – the very President
whose challenge to do something for our country had brought many of
us to Washington in the first place. But, barring the emergence of a
courageous whistleblower-patriot like Daniel Ellsberg, Chelsea
Manning or Edward Snowden, I do not expect to live long enough to
learn precisely who orchestrated and carried out the assassination of
JFK.

And
yet, in a sense, those particulars seem less important than two main
lessons learned: (1) If a President can face down intense domestic
pressure from the power elite and turn toward peace with perceived
foreign enemies, then anything is possible. The darkness of
Kennedy’s murder should not obscure the light of that basic truth;
and (2) There is ample evidence pointing to a state execution of a
President willing to take huge risks for peace. While no
post-Kennedy president can ignore that harsh reality, it remains
possible that a future President with the vision and courage of JFK
might beat the odds – particularly as the American Empire
disintegrates and domestic discontent grows.

I
do hope to be around next April after the 180-day extension for
release of the remaining JFK documents. But – absent a gutsy
whistleblower – I wouldn’t be surprised to see in April,
Washington
Post
 banner
headline much like the one that appeared Saturday:
JFK
files: The promise of revelations derailed by CIA, FBI.”

The
New Delay Is the Story

You
might have thought that almost 54 years after Kennedy was murdered in
the streets of Dallas – and after knowing for a quarter century the
supposedly final deadline for releasing the JFK files – the CIA and
FBI would not have needed a six-month extension to decide what
secrets that they still must hide.

Journalist
Caitlin Johnstone
hits
the nail on the head
 in
pointing out that the biggest revelation from last week’s limited
release of the JFK files is “the fact that the FBI and CIA still
desperately need to keep secrets about something that happened 54
years ago.”

What
was released on Oct. 26, was a tiny fraction of what had remained
undisclosed in the National Archives. To find out why, one needs
to have some appreciation of a 70-year-old American political
tradition that might be called “fear of the spooks.”

That
the CIA and FBI are still choosing what we should be allowed to see
concerning who murdered John Kennedy may seem unusual, but there is
hoary precedent for it.  After JFK’s assassination on Nov. 22,
1963, the well-connected Allen Dulles, whom Kennedy had fired as CIA
director after the Bay of Pigs fiasco, got himself appointed to the
Warren Commission and took the lead in shaping the investigation of
JFK’s murder.

By
becoming
de
facto
 head
of the Commission, Dulles was perfectly placed to protect himself and
his associates, if any commissioners or investigators were tempted to
question whether Dulles and the CIA played any role in killing
Kennedy. When a few independent-minded journalists did succumb to
that temptation, they were immediately branded – you guessed it –
“conspiracy theorists.”

And
so, the big question remains: Did Allen Dulles and other
“cloak-and-dagger” CIA operatives have a hand in John Kennedy’s
assassination and subsequent cover-up? In my view and the view of
many more knowledgeable investigators, the best dissection of the
evidence on the murder appears in James Douglass’s 2008 book,
JFK
and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why It Matters.

After
updating and arraying the abundant evidence, and conducting still
more interviews, Douglass concludes that the answer to the big
question is Yes. Reading Douglass’s book today may help
explain why so many records are still withheld from release, even in
redacted form, and why, indeed, we may never see them in their
entirety.

Truman:
CIA a Frankenstein?

When
Kennedy was assassinated, it must have occurred to former President
Harry Truman, as it did to many others, that the disgraced Allen
Dulles and his associates might have conspired to get rid of a
President they felt was soft on Communism – and dismissive of the
Deep State of that time. Not to mention their vengeful desire to
retaliate for Kennedy’s response to the Bay of Pigs fiasco. (Firing
Allen Dulles and other CIA paragons of the Deep State for that fiasco
simply was not done.)

Exactly
one month after John Kennedy was killed, the
Washington
Post
 published
an op-ed by Harry Truman titled “Limit CIA Role to Intelligence.”
The first sentence read, “I think it has become necessary to take
another look at the purpose and operations of our Central
Intelligence Agency.”

Strangely,
the op-ed appeared only in the
Post’s early
edition on Dec. 22, 1963. It was excised from that day’s later
editions and, despite being authored by the President who was
responsible for setting up the CIA in 1947, the all-too-relevant
op-ed was ignored in all other major media.

Truman
clearly believed that the spy agency had lurched off in what Truman
thought were troubling directions. He began his op-ed by
underscoring “the original reason why I thought it necessary to
organize this Agency … and what I expected it to do.” It would be
“charged with the collection of all intelligence reports from every
available source, and to have those reports reach me as President
without Department ‘treatment’ or interpretations.”

Truman
then moved quickly to one of the main things clearly bothering
him. He wrote “the most important thing was to guard against
the chance of intelligence being used to influence or to lead the
President into unwise decisions.”

It
was not difficult to see this as a reference to how one of the
agency’s early directors, Allen Dulles, tried to trick President
Kennedy into sending U.S. forces to rescue the group of invaders who
had landed on the beach at the Bay of Pigs in April 1961 with no
chance of success, absent the speedy commitment of U.S. air and
ground support. The planned mouse-trapping of the then-novice
President Kennedy had been underpinned by a rosy “analysis”
showing how this pin-prick on the beach would lead to a popular
uprising against Fidel Castro.

Wallowing
in the Bay of Pigs

Arch-Establishment
figure Allen Dulles was offended when young President Kennedy, on
entering office, had the temerity to question the CIA’s Bay of Pigs
plans, which had been set in motion under President Dwight
Eisenhower. When Kennedy made it clear he would
not approve
the use of U.S. combat forces, Dulles set out, with supreme
confidence, to give the President no choice except to send U.S.
troops to the rescue.

Coffee-stained
notes handwritten by Allen Dulles were discovered after his death and
reported by historian Lucien S. Vandenbroucke. In his notes, Dulles
explained that, “when the chips were down,” Kennedy would be
forced by “the realities of the situation” to give whatever
military support was necessary “rather than permit the enterprise
to fail.”

The
“enterprise” which Dulles said could not fail was, of course, the
overthrow of Fidel Castro. After mounting several failed operations
to assassinate Castro, this time Dulles meant to get his man, with
little or no attention to how Castro’s patrons in Moscow might
react eventually. (The next year, the Soviets agreed to install
nuclear missiles in Cuba as a deterrent to future U.S. aggression,
leading to the Cuban Missile Crisis).

In
1961, the reckless Joint Chiefs of Staff, whom then-Deputy Secretary
of State George Ball later described as a “sewer of deceit,”
relished any chance to confront the Soviet Union and give it, at
least, a black eye. (One can still smell the odor from that
sewer in many of the documents released last week.)

But
Kennedy stuck to his guns, so to speak. A few months after the
abortive invasion of Cuba — and his refusal to send the U.S.
military to the rescue — Kennedy fired Dulles and his
co-conspirators and told a friend that he wanted to “splinter the
CIA into a thousand pieces and scatter it into the winds.” Clearly,
the outrage was mutual.

When JFK
and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why It Matters
 came
out, the mainstream media had an allergic reaction and gave it almost
no reviews. It is a safe bet, though, that Barack Obama was given a
copy and that this might account in some degree for his continual
deference – timorousness even – toward the CIA.

Could
fear of the Deep State be largely why President Obama felt he had to
leave the Cheney/Bush-anointed CIA torturers, kidnappers and
black-prison wardens in place, instructing his first CIA chief, Leon
Panetta, to become, in effect, the agency’s lawyer rather than take
charge? Is this why Obama felt he could not fire his clumsily
devious Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, who had to
apologize to Congress for giving “clearly erroneous” testimony
under oath in March 2013? Does Obama’s fear account for his
allowing then-National Security Agency Director Keith Alexander and
counterparts in the FBI to continue to mislead the American people,
even though the documents released by Edward Snowden showed them –
as well as Clapper – to be lying about the government’s
surveillance activities?

Is
this why Obama fought tooth and nail to protect CIA Director John
Brennan by trying to thwart publication of the comprehensive Senate
Intelligence Committee investigation of CIA torture, which was

based
on original Agency cables, emails, and headquarters memos?

The
Deep State Today

Many
Americans cling to a comforting conviction that the Deep State is a
fiction, at least in a “democracy” like the United States.
References to the enduring powers of the security agencies and other
key bureaucracies have been essentially banned by the mainstream
media, which many other suspicious Americans have come to see as just
one more appendage of the Deep State.

But
occasionally the reality of how power works pokes through in some
unguarded remark by a Washington insider, someone like Sen. Chuck
Schumer, D-New York, the Senate Minority Leader with 36 years of
experience in Congress. As Senate Minority Leader, he also is an
ex
officio
 member
of the Senate Intelligence Committee, which is supposed to oversee
the intelligence agencies.

During
a Jan. 3, 2017 interview with MSNBC’S Rachel Maddow, Schumer told
Maddow nonchalantly about the dangers awaiting President-elect Donald
Trump if he kept on “taking on the intelligence community.” She
and Schumer were discussing Trump’s sharp tweeting regarding U.S.
intelligence and evidence of “Russian hacking” (which both
Schumer and Maddow treat as flat fact).

Schumer said:
“Let me tell you, you take on the intelligence community, they have
six ways from Sunday at getting back at you.  So even for a
practical, supposedly hard-nosed businessman, he’s being really
dumb to do this.”

Three
days after that interview, President Obama’s intelligence chiefs
released a nearly evidence-free “assessment” claiming that the
Kremlin engaged in a covert operation to put Trump into office,
fueling a “scandal” that has hobbled Trump’s presidency. On
Monday, Russia-gate special prosecutor Robert Mueller indicted
Trump’s one-time campaign manager Paul Manafort on unrelated money
laundering, tax and foreign lobbying charges, apparently in the hope
that Manafort will provide incriminating evidence against Trump.

So,
President Trump has been in office long enough to have learned how
the game is played and the “six ways from Sunday” that the
intelligence community has for “getting back at you.” He appears
to be as intimidated as was President Obama.

Trump’s
awkward acquiescence in the Deep State’s last-minute foot-dragging
regarding release of the JFK files is simply the most recent sign
that he, too, is under the thumb of what the Soviets used to call
“the organs of state security.”

Happy
Birthday CIA: 7 Truly Terrible Things the Agency Has Done in 70 Years

September
18, 2017 at 5:26 pm

Written
by
Carey
Wedler

(ANTIMEDIA) —
On
Monday, President Trump
tweeted birthday
wishes to the Air Force and the CIA. Both
became
official organizations
70 years ago on September 18, 1947, with the implementation of the
National Security Act of 1947.

After
spending years as a wartime intelligence agency called the Office of
Strategic Services, the agency was solidified as a key player in the
federal government’s operations with then-President Harry Truman’s
authorization.

In
the seventy years since, the CIA has committed a wide variety of
misdeeds, crimes, coups, and violence. Here are seven of the worst
programs they’ve carried out (that are known to the public):

    1.
    Toppling governments around the world
     —
The CIA is best known for its first coup, Operation Ajax, in 1953,
in which it ousted the democratically elected leader of Iran,
Mohammed Mossadegh, reinstating the autocratic Shah, who favored
western oil interests. That operation, which the CIA now
    admits to
waging with British intelligence, ultimately resulted in the
    1979
    revolution
     and
subsequent U.S. hostage crisis. Relations between the U.S. and Iran
remain strained to this day, aptly described by the CIA-coined term
    blowback.”

But
the CIA has had a hand in
toppling a
number of other democratically elected governments, from Guatemala
(1954) and the Congo (1960) to the Dominican Republic (1961), South
Vietnam (1963), Brazil (1964), and Chile (1973). The CIA has aimed to
install leaders who appease American interests,
often
empowering oppressive, violent
dictators
.
This is only a partial list of countries where the CIA covertly
attempted to exploit and manipulate sovereign nations’ governments.

  1. Operation
    Paperclip

In one of the more bizarre CIA plots, the agency and other
government departments employed Nazi scientists both within and
outside the United States to gain an advantage over the
    Soviets. As
    summarized by NPR:

The
aim [of Operation Paperclip] was to find and preserve German weapons,
including biological and chemical agents, but American scientific
intelligence officers quickly realized the weapons themselves were
not enough.

They
decided the United States needed to bring the Nazi scientists
themselves to the U.S. Thus began a mission to recruit top Nazi
doctors, physicists and chemists — including Wernher von Braun, who
went on to design the rockets that took man to the moon.

They
kept this plot secret, though they
admitted to
it upon the release of
Operation
Paperclip: The Secret Intelligence Program That Brought Nazi
Scientists To America
 by
Annie Jacobsen. In a book review, the CIA wrote that “
Henry
Wallace, former vice president and secretary of commerce, believed
the scientists’ ideas could launch new civilian industries and
produce jobs.”

They
praised the book’s historical accuracy, noting “that the
Launch Operations Center at Cape Canaveral, Florida, was headed by
Kurt Debus, an ardent Nazi
.” They acknowledged that “General
Reinhard Gehlen, former head of Nazi intelligence operations against
the Soviets, was hired by the US Army and later by the CIA to operate
600 ex-Nazi agents in the Soviet zone of occupied Germany
.”

Remarkably,
they noted that Jacobsen “understandably questions the morality
of the decision to hire Nazi SS scientists,
” but praise her for
pointing out that it was done to fight Soviets. They also made sure
to add that the Soviets hired Nazis, too, apparently justifying their
own questionable actions by citing their most loathed enemy.

  1. Operation
    CHAOS
     —
The FBI is widely known for its
    COINTELPRO schemes
    to undermine
    communist
movements in the 1950s and anti-war, civil rights
    ,
    and
    black
    power
     movements
in the 1960s, but the CIA has not been implicated nearly as deeply
because, technically, the CIA cannot legally engage in domestic
spying. But that was of little concern to President Lyndon B.
Johnson as opposition to the Vietnam war grew. According to
    former
    New
    York Times
     journalist
and Pulitzer Prize-winner Tim Weiner, as documented in his extensive
    CIA
    historyLegacy
    of Ashes
    ,
Johnson instructed then-CIA Director Richard Helms to break the law:

In
October 1967, a handful of CIA analysts joined in the first big
Washington march against the war. The president regarded protesters
as enemies of the state. He was convinced that the peace movement was
controlled and financed by Moscow and Beijing. He wanted proof. He
ordered Richard Helms to produce it.

Helms
reminded the president that the CIA was barred from spying on
Americans. He says Johnson told him: ‘I’m quite aware of that.
What I want for you is to pursue this matter, and to do what is
necessary to track down the foreign communists who are behind this
intolerable interference in our domestic affairs…’

Helms
obeyed. Weiner wrote:

In
a blatant violation of his powers under the law, the director of
central intelligence became a part-time secret police chief. The CIA
undertook a domestic surveillance operation, code-named Chaos. It
went on for almost seven years… Eleven CIA officers grew long hair,
learned the jargon of the New Left, and went off to infiltrate peace
groups in the United States and Europe
.”

According
to Weiner, “the agency compiled a computer index of 300,000
names of American people and organizations, and extensive files on
7,200 citizens. It began working in secret with police departments
all over America
.” Because they could not draw a “clear
distinction” between the new far left and mainstream opposition to
the war, the CIA spied on every major peace organization in the
country. President Johnson also wanted them to prove a connection
between foreign communists and the black power movement. “The
agency tried its best
,” Weiner noted, ultimately noting that
the CIA never found a shred of evidence that linked the leaders
of the American left or the black-power movement to foreign
governments.

  1. Infiltrating
    the media
     — Over the years, the CIA has successfully
gained influence in the news media, as well as popular media like
film and television. Its influence over the news began almost
immediately after the agency was formed. As Weiner explained, CIA
Director Allen Dulles established firm ties with newspapers:

Dulles
kept in close touch with the men who ran the New York Times, The
Washington Post, and the nation’s leading weekly magazines. He
could pick up the phone and edit a breaking story, make sure an
irritating foreign correspondent was yanked from the field, or hire
the services of men such as Time’s Berlin bureau chief and
Newsweek’s man in Tokyo
.”

He
continued:

It
was second nature for Dulles to plant stories in the press. American
newsrooms were dominated by veterans of the government’s wartime
propaganda branch, the Office of War Information…The men who
responded to the CIA’s call included Henry Luce and his editors at
Time, Life, and Fortune; popular magazines such as Parade, the
Saturday Review, and Reader’s Digest; and the most powerful
executives at CBS News. Dulles built a public-relations and
propaganda machine that came to include more than fifty news
organizations, a dozen publishing houses, and personal pledges of
support from men such as Axel Springer, West Germany’s most
powerful press baron
.”

The
CIA’s influence had not waned by 1977 when journalist Carl
Bernstein
reported on
publications with CIA agents in their employ, as well as “
more
than 400 American journalists who in the past twenty five years
have secretly carried out assignments for the Central Intelligence
Agency.”

The
CIA has also successfully
advised
on and influenced
 numerous
television shows,
such
as
Homeland and 24 and films like Zero
Dark Thirty
and Argo,
which push narratives that ultimately favor the agency. According to
Tricia Jenkins, author of
The
CIA in Hollywood: How the Agency Shapes Film & Television
a
concerted agency effort began in the 1990s to counteract negative
public perceptions of the CIA, but their influence reaches back
decades. In the 1950s, filmmakers produced films
for the
CIA
,
including the 1954 film adaptation of George Orwell’s
Animal
Farm
.

Researchers
Tom Secker and Matthew Alford, whose work has been
published in
the
American
Journal of Economics and Sociology
,
say their recent Freedom of Information Act requests have shown that
the CIA — along with the military — have
influenced over
1,800 films and television shows, many of which have nothing to do
with CIA or military themes.

  1. Drug-induced
    Mind control
     –
In the 1950s, the CIA began experimenting with drugs to determine
whether they might be useful in extracting information.
    As
    Smithsonian
    Magazine
     has noted of
    the MKUltra project:

The
project, which continued for more than a decade, was originally
intended to make sure the United States government kept up with
presumed Soviet advances in mind-control technology. It ballooned in
scope and its ultimate result, among other things, was illegal drug
testing on thousands of Americans
.”

Further:

The
intent of the project was to study ‘the use of biological and
chemical materials in altering human behavior,’
according
to
 the
official testimony of CIA director Stansfield Turner in 1977. The
project was conducted in extreme secrecy, Turner said, because of
ethical and legal questions surrounding the program and the negative
public response that the CIA anticipated if MKUltra should become
public.

Under
MKUltra, the CIA gave itself the authority to research how drugs
could:’ ‘promote the intoxicating effects of alcohol;’ ‘render
the induction of hypnosis easier;’ ‘enhance the ability of
individuals to withstand privation, torture and coercion;’ produce
amnesia, shock and confusion; and much more. Many of these questions
were investigated using unwitting test subjects, like drug-addicted
prisoners, marginalized sex workers and terminal cancer patients–
‘people who could not fight back,’
in
the words of
 Sidney
Gottlieb, the chemist who introduced LSD to the CIA.

Further,
as Weiner noted:

Under
its auspices, seven prisoners at a federal penitentiary in Kentucky
were kept high on LSD for seventy-seven consecutive days. When the
CIA slipped the same drug to an army civilian employee, Frank Olson,
he leaped out of the window of a New York Hotel.”

Weiner
added that senior CIA officers destroyed “almost all of the
records” of the programs, but that while the “evidence that
remains is fragmentary…it strongly suggests that use of secret
prisons for the forcible drug-induced questioning of suspect agents
went on throughout the 1950s.

Years
later, the CIA would be accused of distributing crack-cocaine into
poor black communities, though this is currently less substantiated
and
supported mostly
by accounts of those who claim to have been involved.

  1. Brutal
    torture tactics
     —
    More recently, the CIA was
    exposed for
sponsoring abusive, disturbing terror tactics against detainees at
prisons housing terror suspects. An extensive 2014 Senate report
documented agents committing sexual abuse, forcing detainees to
stand on broken legs, waterboarding them so severely it sometimes
led to convulsions, and imposing forced rectal feeding, to name a
few examples. Ultimately, the agency had very little actionable
intelligence to show for their torture tactics but
    lied to
suggest they did, according to the torture report. Their torture
    tactics
    led the
International Criminal Court to suggest the CIA, along with the U.S.
armed forces, could be guilty of war crimes for their abuses.

    7.
Arming radicals — The CIA has a long habit of arming
radical, extremist groups that view the United States as enemies. In
1979, the CIA set out to support Afghan rebels in their bid to
defeat the Soviet occupation of the Middle Eastern country. As
Weiner wrote, in 1979, “Prompted by Zbigniew Brzezinski,
President Carter signed a covert-action order for the CIA to provide
the Afghan rebels with medical aid, money, and propaganda.

As
Weiner detailed later in his book:

The
Pakistani intelligence chiefs who doled out the CIA’s guns and
money favored the Afghan factions who proved themselves most capable
in battle. Those factions also happened to be the most committed
Islamists. No one dreamed that the holy warriors could ever turn
their jihad against the United States
.”

Though
some speculate the CIA directly armed Osama bin Laden, that is yet to
be fully proven or admitted. What is clear is that western
media
revered him
as a valuable fighter against the Soviets, that he
arrived to
fight in Afghanistan in1980, and that al-Qaeda emerged from the
mujahideen, who were beneficiaries of the CIA’s program. Stanford
University has
noted that Bin
Laden and Abdullah Azzam, a prominent Palestinian cleric,
established
Al Qaeda from the fighters, financial resources, and training and
recruiting structures left over from the anti-Soviet war
.”
Much of those “structures” were provided by the agency.
Intentionally or not, the CIA helped fuel the rise of the terror
group.

Weiner
noted that as the CIA failed in other countries like Libya, by the
late 1980s “Only the mujahideen, the Afghan holy warriors, were
drawing blood and scenting victory. The CIA’s Afghan operation was
now a $700-million-dollar-a-year-program
” and represented 80%
of the overseas budget of the clandestine services. “The CIA’s
briefing books never answered the question of what would happen when
a militant Islamic army defeated the godless invaders of
Afghanistan
,” though Tom Twetten, “the number two man in
the clandestine service in the summer of 1988
,” was tasked with
figuring out what would happen with the Afghan rebels. “We don’t
have any plan
,” he concluded.

Apparently
failing to learn their lesson, the CIA adopted nearly the exact same
policy in Syria decades later, arming what they called “moderate
rebels” against the Assad regime. Those groups
ultimately
aligned with
al-Qaeda groups. One CIA-backed faction made headlines last year
for
beheading a
child (though President Trump cut off the CIA program in June, the
military
continues to
align with “moderate” groups).

Unsurprisingly,
this list is far from complete. The CIA has engaged in a wide variety
of
extrajudicial
practice
,
and there are likely countless transgressions we have yet to learn
about.

As
Donald Trump cheers the birthday of an agency he himself
once
criticized,
it should be abundantly clear that the nation’s covert spy agency
deserves scrutiny and skepticism — not celebration.

The Indefensible Hiroshima Revisionism That Haunts America To This Day

Seventy
years ago this week the US vaporized 250,000 civilians, and yet still the bombings are seen as an act of mercy

Here
we are, 70 years after the nuclear obliteration of Hiroshima and
Nagasaki, and I’m wondering if we’ve come even one step closer to a
moral reckoning with our status as the world’s only country to use
atomic weapons to slaughter human beings. Will an American president
ever offer a formal apology? Will our country ever regret the
dropping of “Little Boy” and “Fat Man,” those two bombs that
burned hotter than the sun? Will it absorb the way they instantly
vaporized thousands of victims, incinerated tens of thousands more,
and created unimaginably powerful shockwaves and firestorms that
ravaged everything for miles beyond ground zero? Will it finally come
to grips with the “black rain” that spread radiation and killed
even more people — slowly and painfully — leading in the end to a
death toll for the two cities
conservatively
estimated
 at
more than 250,000?

By
1945, most Americans didn’t care that the civilians of Hiroshima and
Nagasaki had not committed Japan’s war crimes. American wartime
culture had for years drawn on a long history of “yellow peril”
racism to paint the Japanese not just as inhuman, but as subhuman. As
Truman put it in his diary, it was a country full of
savages”
“ruthless, merciless, and fanatic” people so loyal to the emperor
that every man, woman, and child would fight to the bitter end. In
these years, magazines routinely
depicted Japanese
as monkeys, apes, insects, and vermin. Given such a foe, so went the
prevailing view, there were no true “civilians” and nothing short
of near extermination, or at least a powerful demonstration of
America’s willingness to proceed down that path, could ever force
their surrender. As Admiral William “Bull” Halsey
said in
a 1944 press conference, “The only good Jap is a Jap who’s been
dead six months.”

On
August 9, 1945, President Harry Truman delivered a
radio
address
 from
the White House. “The world will note,” he said, “that the
first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, a military base. That was
because we wished in this first attack to avoid, insofar as possible,
the killing of civilians.” He did not mention that a second atomic
bomb had already been dropped on Nagasaki.

Truman
understood, of course, that if Hiroshima was a “military base,”
then so was Seattle; that the vast majority of its residents were
civilians; and that perhaps 100,000 of them had already been killed.
Indeed, he knew that Hiroshima was chosen not for its military
significance but because it was one of only a handful of Japanese
cities that had not already been firebombed and largely obliterated
by American air power.

Twenty
years ago, the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum
planned
an ambitious exhibit
 to
mark the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II. At its center
was to be an extraordinary artifact — the fuselage of the
Enola
Gay
,
the B-29 Superfortress used to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. But
the curators and historical consultants wanted something more than
yet another triumphal celebration of American military science and
technology. Instead, they sought to assemble a thought-provoking
portrayal of the bomb’s development, the debates about its use, and
its long-term consequences. The museum sought to include some
evidence challenging the persistent claim that it was dropped simply
to end the war and “save lives.”

For
starters, visitors would have learned that some of America’s
best-known World War II military commanders opposed using atomic
weaponry. In fact,
six
of the seven
 five-star
generals and admirals of that time believed that there was no reason
to use them, that the Japanese were already defeated, knew it, and
were likely to surrender before any American invasion could be
launched. Several, like Admiral William Leahy and General Dwight
Eisenhower, also had moral objections to the weapon. Leahy considered
the atomic bombing of Japan “barbarous” and a violation of “every
Christian ethic I have ever heard of and all of the known laws of
war.”

Truman
did not seriously consult with military commanders who had objections
to using the bomb.  He did, however, ask a panel of military
experts to offer an estimate of how many Americans might be killed if
the United States launched the two major invasions of the Japanese
home islands scheduled for November 1, 1945 and March 1, 1946. Their
figure: 40,000 — far below the half-million he would cite after the
war. Even this estimate was based on the dubious assumption that
Japan could continue to feed, fuel, and arm its troops with the U.S.
in almost complete control of the seas and skies.

The
Smithsonian also planned to inform its visitors that some key
presidential advisers had urged Truman
to drop his demand for “unconditional surrender” and allow Japan
to keep the emperor on his throne, an alteration in peace terms that
might have led to an almost immediate surrender. Truman rejected that
advice, only to grant the same concession after the
nuclear attacks.

So
here we are, 70 years later, and we seem, if anything, farther than
ever from a rejection of the idea that launching atomic warfare on
Japanese civilian populations was an act of mercy. Perhaps some
future American president will finally apologize for our nuclear
attacks, but one thing seems certain: no Japanese survivor of the
bombs will be alive to hear it.

The Indefensible Hiroshima Revisionism That Haunts America To This Day

The
Real Reason America Used Nuclear Weapons Against Japan. It Was Not To
End the War Or Save Lives.

By Washington’s
Blog
 / globalresearch.ca / Nov
2, 2012

Like
all Americans, I was taught that the U.S. dropped nuclear bombs on
Hiroshima and Nagasaki in order to end WWII and save both American
and Japanese lives.

But
most of the top American military officials at the time
said
otherwise

The
U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey group, assigned by President Truman to
study the air attacks on Japan, produced a report in July of 1946
that
concluded (52-56):

Based
on a detailed investigation of all the facts and supported by the
testimony of the surviving Japanese leaders involved, it is the
Survey’s opinion that certainly prior to 31 December 1945 and in
all probability prior to 1 November 1945, Japan would have
surrendered even if the atomic bombs had not been dropped
, even
if Russia had not entered the war, and even if no invasion had been
planned or contemplated.

General
(and later president) Dwight Eisenhower – then
Supreme
Commander of all Allied Forces
,
and the officer who created most of America’s WWII military plans
for Europe and Japan – said:

The
Japanese were ready to surrender and it wasn’t necessary to
hit them with that awful thing.

Newsweek,
11/11/63,
Ike
on Ike

Eisenhower
also
noted (pg.
380):

In
[July] 1945… Secretary of War Stimson, visiting my headquarters in
Germany, informed me that our government was preparing to drop an
atomic bomb on Japan. I was one of those who felt that there were a
number of cogent reasons to question the wisdom of such an act. …the
Secretary, upon giving me the news of the successful bomb test in New
Mexico, and of the plan for using it, asked for my reaction,
apparently expecting a vigorous assent.

During
his recitation of the relevant facts, I had been conscious of a
feeling of depression and so I voiced to him
my
grave misgivings, first on the basis of my belief that Japan was
already defeated and that dropping the bomb was completely
unnecessary, and secondly because I thought that our country should
avoid shocking world opinion by the use of a weapon whose employment
was, I thought, no longer mandatory as a measure to save American

lives. It was my
belief that Japan was, at that very moment, seeking some way to
surrender with a minimum loss of ‘face’
.
The Secretary was deeply perturbed by my attitude….

Admiral
William Leahy
 –
the highest ranking member of the U.S. military from 1942 until
retiring in 1949, who was the first de facto Chairman of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff, and who was at the center of all major American
military decisions in World War II –
wrote (pg.
441):

It
is my opinion that the use of this barbarous weapon at Hiroshima and
Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan. The
Japanese were already defeated and ready to surrender because of the
effective sea blockade and the successful bombing with conventional
weapons
.

The
lethal possibilities of atomic warfare in the future are frightening.
My own feeling was that in being the first to use it, we had adopted
an ethical standard common to the barbarians of the Dark Ages. I was
not taught to make war in that fashion, and wars cannot be won by
destroying women and children.

General
Douglas MacArthur
agreed (pg.
65, 70-71):

MacArthur’s
views about the decision to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and
Nagasaki were starkly different from what the general public supposed
…. When I asked General MacArthur about the decision to
drop the bomb, I was surprised to learn he had not even been
consulted. What, I asked, would his advice have been? He replied that
he saw no military justification for the dropping of the bomb.
 The
war might have ended weeks earlier, he said, if the United States had
agreed, as it later did anyway, to the retention of the institution
of the emperor.

Moreover (pg.
512):

The
Potsdam declaration in July, demand[ed] that Japan surrender
unconditionally or face ‘prompt and utter destruction.’ MacArthur
was appalled. He knew that the Japanese would never renounce their
emperor, and that without him an orderly transition to peace would be
impossible anyhow, because his people would never submit to Allied
occupation unless he ordered it. Ironically, when the surrender did
come, it was conditional, and the condition was a continuation of the
imperial reign. Had the General’s advice been followed, the resort
to atomic weapons at Hiroshima and Nagasaki might have been
unnecessary.

Similarly,
Assistant Secretary of War John McLoy
noted (pg.
500):

I
have always felt that if, in our ultimatum to the Japanese government
issued from Potsdam [in July 1945], we had referred to the retention
of the emperor as a constitutional monarch and had made some
reference to the reasonable accessibility of raw materials to the
future Japanese government, it would have been accepted. Indeed, I
believe that even in the form it was delivered, there was some
disposition on the part of the Japanese to give it favorable
consideration. When the war was over I arrived at this conclusion
after talking with a number of Japanese officials who had been
closely associated with the decision of the then Japanese government,
to reject the ultimatum, as it was presented.
I
believe we missed the opportunity of effecting a

Japanese
surrender, completely satisfactory to us, without the necessity of
dropping the bombs
.

Under
Secretary of the Navy Ralph Bird said:

I
think that the Japanese were ready for peace, and they already had
approached the Russians and, I think, the Swiss. And that

suggestion of [giving] a
warning
[of
the
atomic
bomb] was a face-saving proposition for them, and one that they could
have readily accepted.

***

In
my opinion, the Japanese war was really won before we ever used the
atom bomb
. Thus, it wouldn’t have been necessary for us to
disclose our nuclear position and stimulate the Russians to develop
the same thing much more rapidly than they would have if we had not
dropped the bomb.

War
Was Really Won Before We Used A-Bomb
,
U.S. News and World Report, 8/15/60, pg. 73-75.

He
also
noted (pg.
144-145, 324):

It
definitely seemed to me that the Japanese were becoming weaker and
weaker. They were surrounded by the Navy. They couldn’t get any
imports and they couldn’t export anything. Naturally, as time went
on and the war developed in our favor it was quite logical to hope
and expect that with the proper kind of a warning the Japanese would
then be in a position to make peace, which would have made
it unnecessary for us to drop the bomb and have had
to bring Russia in.

General
Curtis LeMay, the tough cigar-smoking Army Air Force “hawk,”
stated
publicly
shortly
before the nuclear bombs were dropped on Japan:

The
war would have been over in two weeks. . . . The atomic bomb had
nothing to do with the end of the war at all.

The
Vice Chairman of the U.S. Bombing Survey Paul Nitze
wrote (pg.
36-37, 44-45):

[I]
concluded that even without the atomic bomb, Japan was likely
to surrender in a matter of months
. My own view was that Japan
would capitulate by November 1945.

***

Even
without the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it seemed highly
unlikely, given what we found to have been the mood of the Japanese
government, that a U.S. invasion of the islands [scheduled for
November 1, 1945] would have been necessary.

Deputy
Director of the Office of Naval Intelligence Ellis Zacharias wrote:

Just
when the Japanese were ready to capitulate, we went ahead and
introduced to the world the most devastating weapon it had ever seen
and, in effect, gave the go-ahead to Russia to swarm over Eastern
Asia.

Washington
decided that Japan had been given its chance and now it was time to
use the A-bomb.

I
submit that it was the wrong decision. It was wrong on strategic
grounds. And it was wrong on humanitarian grounds.

Ellis
Zacharias,
How
We Bungled the Japanese Surrender
,
Look, 6/6/50, pg. 19-21.

Brigadier
General Carter Clarke – the military intelligence officer in charge
of preparing summaries of intercepted Japanese cables for President
Truman and his advisors –
said (pg.
359):

When
we didn’t need to do it, and we knew we didn’t need to do it, and
they knew that we knew we didn’t need to do it, we used them as an
experiment for two atomic bombs.

Many
other high-level military officers concurred.
For
example
:

The
commander in chief of the U.S. Fleet and Chief of Naval Operations,
Ernest J. King, stated that the naval blockade and prior bombing of
Japan in March of 1945, had rendered the Japanese helpless and that
the use of the atomic bomb was both unnecessary and immoral. Also,
the opinion of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz was reported to have
said in a press conference on September 22, 1945, that “The Admiral
took the opportunity of adding his voice to those insisting that
Japan had been defeated before the atomic bombing and Russia’s
entry into the war.” In a subsequent speech at the Washington
Monument on October 5, 1945, Admiral Nimitz stated “The Japanese
had, in fact, already sued for peace before the atomic age was
announced to the world with the destruction of Hiroshima and before
the Russian entry into the war.” It was learned also that on or
about July 20, 1945, General Eisenhower had urged Truman, in a
personal visit, not to use the atomic bomb. Eisenhower’s assessment
was “It wasn’t necessary to hit them with that awful thing . . .
to use the atomic bomb, to kill and terrorize civilians, without even
attempting [negotiations], was a double crime.” Eisenhower also
stated that it wasn’t necessary for Truman to “succumb” to [the
tiny handful of people putting pressure on the president to drop atom
bombs on Japan.]

British
officers were of the same mind. For example, General Sir Hastings
Ismay, Chief of Staff to the British Minister of Defence,
said to
Prime Minister Churchill that “when Russia came into the war
against Japan, the Japanese would probably wish to get out on almost
any terms short of the dethronement of the Emperor.”

On
hearing that the atomic test was successful, Ismay’s private
reaction was one of “revulsion.”

Why
Were Bombs Dropped on Populated
Cities Without
Military Value?

Even
military officers who favored use of nuclear weapons mainly favored
using them on unpopulated areas or Japanese military targets … not
cities.

For
example, Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Navy Lewis Strauss
proposed to Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal that a
non-lethal
demonstration
 of
atomic weapons would be enough to convince the Japanese to surrender
… and the Navy Secretary agreed (pg. 145, 325):

I
proposed to Secretary Forrestal that the weapon should be
demonstrated before it was used. Primarily it was because it was
clear to a number of people, myself among them, that the war was very
nearly over. The Japanese were nearly ready to capitulate… My
proposal to the Secretary was that the weapon should be demonstrated
over some area accessible to Japanese observers and where its effects
would be dramatic. I remember suggesting that a satisfactory place
for such a demonstration would be a large forest of cryptomeria trees
not
far
from Tokyo. The cryptomeria tree is the Japanese version of our
redwood… I anticipated that a bomb detonated at a suitable height
above such a forest… would lay the trees out in windrows from the
center of the explosion in all directions as though they were
matchsticks, and, of course, set them afire in the center. It seemed
to me that a demonstration of this sort would prove to the Japanese
that we could destroy any of their cities at will…
Secretary
Forrestal agreed wholeheartedly with the recommendation

It
seemed to me that such a weapon was not necessary to bring
the war to a successful conclusion
, that once used it would find
its way into the armaments of the world…

General
George Marshall
agreed:

Contemporary
documents show that Marshall felt “these weapons might first be
used against straight military objectives such as a large naval
installation and then if no complete result was derived from the
effect of that, he thought we ought to designate a number of large
manufacturing areas from which the people would be warned to
leave–telling the Japanese that we intend to destroy such
centers….”

As
the document concerning Marshall’s views suggests, the question of
whether the use of the atomic bomb was justified turns … on whether
the bombs had to be used against a largely civilian target rather
than a strictly military target—which, in fact, was the explicit
choice since although there were Japanese troops in the cities,
neither Hiroshima nor Nagasaki was deemed militarily vital by U.S.
planners. (This is one of the reasons neither had been heavily bombed
up to this point in the war.) Moreover, targeting [at Hiroshima and
Nagasaki] was aimed explicitly on non-military facilities surrounded
by workers’ homes.

Historians
Agree that the Bomb Wasn’t Needed

Historians
agree that nuclear weapons did not need to be used to stop the war or
save lives.

As
historian Doug Long
notes:

U.S.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission historian J. Samuel Walker has studied
the history of research on the decision to use nuclear weapons on
Japan. In his conclusion he writes, “
The
consensus among scholars is that the bomb was not needed to avoid an
invasion of Japan and to end the war within a relatively short time.
It is clear that alternatives to the bomb existed and that Truman and
his advisors knew it
.”
(J. Samuel Walker,
The
Decision to Use the Bomb: A Historiographical Update,
 Diplomatic
History, Winter 1990, pg. 110).

Politicians
Agreed

Many
high-level politicians agreed. For example, Herbert Hoover
said (pg.
142):

The
Japanese were prepared to negotiate all the way from February 1945…up
to and before the time the atomic bombs were dropped; …if such
leads had been followed up, there would have been no occasion
to drop the [atomic] bombs
.

Under
Secretary of State Joseph Grew
noted (pg.
29-32):

In
the light of available evidence I myself and others felt that if such
a categorical statement about the [retention of the] dynasty had been
issued in May, 1945, the surrender-minded elements in the [Japanese]
Government might well have been afforded
by
such a statement a valid reason and the necessary strength to come to
an early clearcut decision.

If
surrender could have been brought about in May, 1945, or even in June
or July, before the entrance of Soviet Russia into the [Pacific] war
and the use of the atomic bomb, the world would have been the gainer.

Why
Then Were Atom Bombs Dropped on Japan?

If
dropping nuclear bombs was unnecessary to end the war or to save
lives, why was the decision to drop them made? Especially over the
objections of so many top military and political figures?

One
theory is that scientists
like
to play with their toys
:

On
September 9, 1945, Admiral William F. Halsey, commander of the Third
Fleet, was publicly quoted extensively as stating that the atomic
bomb was used because the scientists had a “toy and they wanted to
try it out . . . .” He further stated, “The first atomic bomb was
an unnecessary experiment . . . . It was a mistake to ever drop it.”

However,
most of the Manhattan Project scientists who developed the atom bomb
were opposed to using it on Japan.

Albert
Einstein – an important catalyst for the development of the atom
bomb (but not directly connected with the Manhattan Project) –
said
differently
:

A
great majority of scientists were opposed to the sudden employment of
the atom bomb.” In Einstein’s judgment, the dropping of the bomb
was a political – diplomatic decision rather than a military or
scientific decision.

Indeed,
some of the Manhattan Project scientists
wrote
directly to the secretary of defense
 in
1945 to try to dissuade him from dropping the bomb:

We
believe that these considerations make the use of nuclear bombs for
an early, unannounced attack against Japan inadvisable. If the United
States would be the first to release this new means of indiscriminate
destruction upon mankind, she would sacrifice public support
throughout the world, precipitate the race of armaments, and
prejudice the possibility of reaching an international agreement on
the future control of such weapons.

Political
and Social Problems

Manhattan Engineer District Records, Harrison-Bundy files, folder #
76, National Archives (also contained in: Martin Sherwin,
A
World Destroyed
,
1987 edition, pg. 323-333).

The
scientists questioned the ability of destroying Japanese cities with
atomic bombs to bring surrender when destroying Japanese cities with
conventional bombs had not done so, and – like some of the military
officers quoted above – recommended a demonstration of the atomic
bomb for Japan in an unpopulated area.

The
Real Explanation?

History.com notes:

In
the years since the two atomic bombs were dropped on Japan, a number
of historians have suggested that the weapons had a two-pronged
objective …. It has been suggested that the second objective was to
demonstrate the new weapon of mass destruction to the Soviet Union
.
By August 1945, relations between the Soviet Union and the United
States had deteriorated badly. The Potsdam Conference between U.S.
President Harry S. Truman, Russian leader Joseph Stalin, and Winston
Churchill (before being replaced by Clement Attlee) ended just four
days before the bombing of Hiroshima. The meeting was marked by
recriminations and suspicion between the Americans and Soviets.
Russian armies were occupying most of Eastern Europe. Truman
and many of his advisers hoped that the U.S. atomic monopoly might
offer diplomatic leverage with the Soviets. In this fashion, the
dropping of the atomic bomb on Japan can be seen as the first shot of
the Cold War.

New
Scientist
reported in
2005:

The
US decision to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945
was meant to kick-start the Cold War rather than end
the Second World War, according to two nuclear historians who say
they have new evidence backing the controversial theory.

Causing
a fission reaction in several kilograms of uranium and plutonium and
killing over 200,000 people 60 years ago was done more to
impress the Soviet Union than to cow Japan
, they say. And the US
President who took the decision, Harry Truman, was culpable, they
add.

He
knew he was beginning the process of annihilation of the species,”
says Peter Kuznick, director of the Nuclear Studies Institute at
American University in Washington DC, US. “It was not just a war
crime; it was a crime against humanity.”

***

[The
conventional explanation of using the bombs to end the war and save
lives] is disputed by Kuznick and Mark Selden, a historian from
Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, US.

***

New
studies of the US, Japanese and Soviet diplomatic archives suggest
that Truman’s main motive was to limit Soviet expansion in
Asia
, Kuznick claims. Japan surrendered because the Soviet Union
began an invasion a few days after the Hiroshima bombing, not because
of the atomic bombs themselves, he says.

According
to an account by Walter Brown, assistant to then-US secretary of
state James Byrnes, Truman agreed at a meeting three days before the
bomb was dropped on Hiroshima that Japan was “looking for peace”.
Truman was told by his army generals, Douglas Macarthur and Dwight
Eisenhower, and his naval chief of staff, William Leahy, that there
was no military need to use the bomb.

Impressing
Russia was more important than ending the war in Japan,” says
Selden.

John
Pilger
points
out
:

The
US secretary of war, Henry Stimson, told President Truman he was
“fearful” that the US air force would have Japan so “bombed
out” that the new weapon would not be able “to show its
strength”. He later admitted that “no effort was made, and none
was seriously considered, to achieve surrender merely in order not to
have to use the bomb”. His foreign policy colleagues were eager
“to browbeat the Russians with the bomb held rather ostentatiously
on our hip”
. General Leslie Groves, director of the
Manhattan Project
 that made the bomb, testified:
“There was never any illusion on my part that Russia was our enemy,
and that the project was conducted on that basis.”
 The day
after Hiroshima was obliterated, President Truman voiced his
satisfaction with the “overwhelming success” of “the
experiment”.

We’ll
give the
last
word
 to
University of Maryland professor of political economy – and former
Legislative Director in the U.S. House of Representatives and the
U.S. Senate, and Special Assistant in the Department of State –
Gar
Alperovitz
:

Though
most Americans are unaware of the fact, increasing numbers of
historians now recognize the United States did not need to use the
atomic bomb to end the war against Japan in 1945. Moreover, this
essential judgment was expressed by the vast majority of top American
military leaders in all three services in the years after the war
ended: Army, Navy and Army Air Force. Nor was this the judgment of
“liberals,” as is sometimes thought today. In fact, leading
conservatives were far more outspoken in challenging the decision as
unjustified and immoral than American liberals in the years following
World War II.

***

Instead
[of allowing other options to end the war, such as letting the
Soviets attack Japan with ground forces], the United States rushed to
use two atomic bombs at almost exactly the time that an August 8
Soviet attack had originally been scheduled: Hiroshima on August 6
and Nagasaki on August 9. The timing itself has obviously raised
questions among many historians. The available evidence, though not
conclusive, strongly suggests that the atomic bombs may well have
been used in part because American leaders “preferred”—as
Pulitzer Prize–winning historian Martin Sherwin has put it—to end
the war with the bombs rather than the Soviet attack. Impressing the
Soviets during the early diplomatic sparring that ultimately became
the Cold War also appears likely to have been a significant factor.

***

The
most illuminating perspective, however, comes from top World War II
American military leaders. The conventional wisdom that the atomic
bomb saved a million lives is so widespread that … most Americans
haven’t paused to ponder something rather striking to anyone
seriously concerned with the issue: Not only did most top U.S.
military leaders think the bombings were unnecessary and unjustified,
many were morally offended by what they regarded as the unnecessary
destruction of Japanese cities and what were essentially noncombat
populations. Moreover, they spoke about it quite openly and publicly.

***

Shortly
before his death General George C. Marshall quietly defended the
decision, but for the most part he is on record as repeatedly saying
that it was not a military decision, but rather a political
one
.
