Tiny
town v Nestlé

Nestlé
is trying to crush a tiny town of less than 2,000 people. All to keep
sucking their most precious resource — water.

Right
now,
Nestlé
is pumping 250 gallons of water a minute or more than 350,000 gallons
every single day
from
Osceola Township. Bottling it up, and selling it off for massive
profit. And guess how much Nestlé pays?

Just $200
a year
.
Yes, you read that right.

But
the community of Osceola is fighting back: it’s gearing up to
appeal a court decision that outrageously let Nestlé take more water
from the tiny township.

This
tiny community is up against the might of Nestlé. Its legal costs
are spiralling and Nestlé is still trying to bully it into backing
down.

Osceola
residents are asking for your support — so they can keep up their
fight against Nestlé. So their clean drinking water is protected for
their community, and not Nestlé’s profit.

Donating
just takes a moment – use Paypal or your card.

Yes,
I will chip in €1 now
to
stop Nestlé’s corporate water grab!

The
SumOfUs community has supported the township of Osceola before to
take on Nestlé, one of the biggest companies in the world known for
its corporate water grabs.

When
the township’s elected leaders denied Nestlé’s application to
pump more water,
Nestlé
got angry and sued.

And incredible
members like you stepped in, generously donating over $50,000 to
Osceola
 so
it could defend itself against Nestlé in court. Without this
critical money, the township would’ve likely had to declare
bankruptcy.

Unfortunately
Nestlé won that round.
 The
judge ruled in its favour, letting the company bottle up and profit
off Osceola’s precious water.

But
it’s not over yet.
There’s
now a critical opportunity to turn this around
 —
the community are putting the final touches on their appeal. But
Osceola Township needs you to back them if they’re going to win
this. The more money we can raise for Osceola, the stronger the
township will be in defending itself in court against Nestlé’s
corporate water grab.

Donating
just takes a moment – use Paypal or your card.

Yes,
I will donate €1 to support this tiny township’s fight to protect
its water against Nestlé.

Water
is a human right, not a commodity to be sold off for profit. Nestlé
certainly doesn’t agree, but we know that SumOfUs members like you
do.

You’ve
supported communities all over the world defending the precious water
they use for drinking and for growing food.

It’s
not just Osceola. Recently, SumOfUs members like you stepped in after
hearing that a tiny community in Australia was saddled with a
whopping $90,000 debt for daring to take on Asahi-Schweppes. Your
generous donations halved the debt, keeping the community of
Stanley’s fight to protect its water going.

With
ever-increasing extreme weather events and longer and more intense
droughts, our water must stay in the ground to nourish future
generations. And
with a generous donation from you today, together we can help ensure
that precious water, which belongs to communities, stays out of the
hands of greedy corporations.

Will
you please donate €1 to stop Nestlé sucking communities dry?

In

‘This
Is a Coup’: Protests Engulf Wisconsin Capitol as Outgoing Scott
Walker and GOP Move to Cripple Democratic Power

“They
are terrified that democracy is returning to Wisconsin. They are
terrified that 2018 is not the end of anything, but only the
beginning.”

“You
rig the system when you win and you rig the system when you lose,”
Wisconsin Democratic state Rep. Chris Taylor said of the Republican
legislation. “How is it that you have more power when you lose?”

As
Wisconsin Republicans voted to plow ahead with a sweeping package of
legislation that would allow outgoing Gov. Scott Walker to strip
significant authority from Democratic governor-elect Tony Evers,
outraged Wisconsinites flooded the state capitol Monday night to
denounce the GOP’s brazen attempt to subvert the will of the voters
and “undo democracy itself.”

“This
isn’t a bill. This is a coup,” Randy Bryce—aka the “Iron
Stache”—
said before
Wisconsin’s Joint Committee on Finance, which deliberated
and
ultimately
voted along party lines to advance
 the
Republican plan, which seeks to transfer
many
of Evers’ crucial executive powers
 to
the GOP-dominated legislature. A final vote on the plan is expected
as early as Tuesday.

Apparently
lacking the courage to speak on behalf of their legislation—or
fearing the immense grassroots backlash—the bill’s Republican
sponsors
didn’t
bother to show up to the lame-duck hearing
.

Unlike
some of their representatives,
thousands of
Wisconsinites braved the freezing weather and turned out in force,
crowding the inside of the capitol building with chants of “Respect
our vote!” and rallying outside to denounce the Republicans’
last-ditch power grab.

“They
are terrified that democracy is returning to Wisconsin,”
The
Nation
‘s
John Nichols, a Wisconsin native, declared in a speech from the steps
of the capitol building. “They are terrified that 2018 is not
the end of anything, but only the beginning.”

Wisconsin GOP Makes Move To Strip Power From Incoming Governor:

If
approved by the state legislature, the
Republican
plan would
 force
Evers to implement Wisconsin’s Trump-approved Medicaid work
requirements, stop him from banning guns in the state capitol, and
restrict both his ability and that of newly-elected Democratic
Attorney General Josh Kaul to execute the state’s legal affairs.

The
GOP’s sweeping legislative package would also severely restrict early
voting, limiting it to as little as two weeks before an election.

Walker,
who has just weeks left in office,
told
reporters
 on
Monday that he would sign the legislative package if it reaches his
desk.

With
governor-elect Evers vowing to pursue legal action if the plan passes
the legislature, Wisconsin Democrats continued to voice their outrage
at the GOP’s patently anti-democratic plan, which mirrors
ongoing
efforts by Republicans
 in
Michigan to effectively overturn November’s election results.

“You
rig the system when you win and you rig the system when you lose,”
Wisconsin Democratic state Rep. Chris Taylor
said of
the Republican legislation. “How is it that you have more power
when you lose?”

America’s in a State of Moral Collapse

What Happens When a
Nation’s Taught to Think What’s Right is the Enemy of What’s Good

I
spent a gentle and quiet Thanksgiving with family, watching Christmas
movies and overeating — away from the internet. Yawning and
checking the headlines this morning, I was startled, horrified, to
see the picture above — toddlers being tear-gassed. I asked
myself what many of you probably did: “is this who we’ve become?
Or is this, perhaps, who we always were?”

What
a moral abomination — attacking children. Is there anything
lower? And yet that’s hardly the only one — what the world
regards as moral abomination has become a gruesome habit in America,
a grim feature of daily life.
 Here’s a shocking yet
somehow unsurprising statistic — 40% of Americans struggle to
pay for basic medicine. School shootings, opioids, suicide,
depression, an imploded middle class, the swelling ranks of the new
poor — everyday American life is an endless list of the kind of
stuff that would make dystopia blush. What links all these things?

America’s
a nation in steep, profound moral decline. It gasses “those”
kids — while making its own do “active shooter drills.”
What kind of society lets this happen? How did America become such a
society?
I think it happened because America’s moral
muscles atrophied to the point that it became a moral
weakling — unable to shoulder any kind of weight, to act with
much humanity, decency, or goodness, towards itself, or othersNow, I
don’t say that to judge or condemn or shame — but to observe
gently, and to maybe point a way forward.

(Moral
atrophy shouldn’t be a surprise — Americans have been taught,
maybe indoctrinated, not to care for one another, that they are only
their “productivity” and “utility”, seduced or compelled into
a kind of survival-of-the-fittest culture of cruelty, overworking and
undervaluing themselves and each other, which is the inevitable
result of a history of exploitation, slavery, segregation. It
culminated in the apocalyptic every-man-for-himself ideologies of
neoliberalism and predatory, which imploded back into the supremacism
they were born from. But I’ll return to all this.)

Let
me explain what I mean, by way of an example.

Americans
are told that the only case they can make for things like immigration
and refugees is an economic one — hence, endless repetition of
the fact that refugees become immigrants, who set up businesses, and
create jobs, and XYZ percentage to GDP and so on. Very well, they do.
But that fact alone doesn’t convince the unpersuaded, does it? It
seems to elide, to miss, to evade something deeper, more crucial,
truer — about the heart and soul of a people and a nation.

What
is always left unmade — what perhaps cannot be discussed in
America — is the moral case. The truly moral one — not
just why acting in everyone’s best interest is right, but why it
is
good.
Good for us all. Not just
right — at
our own expense. Do you see the difference? Think about it. Aren’t
we told precisely the opposite in America? What’s good for everyone
is what’s bad for us. But is it really true?

What
we don’t discuss — what we aren’t allowed to discuss,
really — is how morality, true morality, as in humane and
caring acts of kindness and decency, not Darwinian-Nietszchean
survival of the fittest — dramatically alters the fortunes of a
society, betters the prosperity of a nation, in profound, lasting,
and transformative ways. Do you see how foreign and alien it is when
I speak this way? It is as if this is something that we can barely
bring ourselves to even conceive of in America today.

Why
is that? Why can’t we make the link between what is moral being
genuinely good for us, not just right at our own expense, exactly?
Why are we always more or less told to believe, in America, that what
is right and what is good are polar opposites? I’m asked by
mainstream American thinking to believe, for example, that my greed,
vanity, contempt, and selfishness will somehow lead to the best for
everyone. In other words, I should never use my moral muscles — that
way, everyone will be best off. What’s right is the enemy of what’s
good. But does that bizarre, twisted, convoluted logic seem to have
worked out for America to you?

Let
us think about what happens if a nation accepts refugees. Not to its
economy, per se — but to itself, it’s deeper capacities and
capabilities, all the things that underpin an economy, which is just
stuff. That act of care confirms, strengthens, and expands its
capacities for empathy, generosity, humility, courage, truth, wisdom,
and gratitude. It extends and commits it to freedom, to justice, to
equality, for all.
It is an act that builds moral
muscles, in other words. But what do moral muscles allow — or
maybe compel — us to do?

The
growth of all those moral capacities, empathy, generosity, humility,
and so forth, in turn, make it much more likely that such a nation
will act humanely toward itself, too. Those moral muscles will give
it the reason and the power both to develop systems like universal
healthcare, childcare, retirement. They will help steer it away from
inequality and injustice and bigotry and resentment, and towards the
opposites. And if a nation has universal goods, like healthcare and
retirement and so on, then humane acts, like accepting refugees, will
probably reconfirm its commitment to them, as well, by testing the
limits of its own goodness, the power of its moral character.

Let
me distill the three key lessons. One, humane acts, by testing us, by
strengthening us, and by empowering us, build moral muscles in three
ways. And there is no other way to build moral muscles, really. Two,
using moral muscles builds moral strength. But leaving moral muscles
to atrophy makes a nation morally weak. Three, we can only really act
as humanely towards ourselves as do to others, and so when we act
humanely to others, it confirms and tests, expands and strengthens,
our own moral strength, too.

Now.
If all this is not just idle theory, but truth, then we would expect
to see something particular happening in the world. Those nations
with things like universal public goods would also have the most
humane policies towards refugees and so on. And that is very much the
case. Scandinavia, for example, has the world’s most expansive
public goods, which underpin the world’s highest quality of
life — and also, mostly, the most open stances towards
refugees. Many of these are the most moral societies in the
world — by that I hardly mean they are perfect, but I do mean
that in them, people treat each other with greater respect and
decency than elsewhere. Not just theoretically, but
genuinely — socially, economically, politically. You would be
quite right to say that’s changed in a place like Denmark — and
I’d say that stance towards refugees indicates a weakening of moral
muscles that will have effects on society itself, too, corroding its
humanity towards itself in the long run.

So
the link seems to be true in the real world, too — humane acts
build our moral muscles, and make it possible for us to act humanely
towards ourselves, too. When we do things like accept refugees, we
are in a sense going to the moral gym — and making sure we are
morally strong also ensures that we have the power and strength to
treat each other humanely, too.

You
would be right to say that I am suggesting nothing different than
Jesus or Buddha or the prophets said thousands of years ago. So why
are Americans taught that they were wrong, essentially? That what’s
moral must come at their own expense? That what’s right is the
enemy of what’s good — not that what’s right
is what’s
good? Do you see my distinction? It’s a subtle — but I think
a crucial — one.

Let
me put it another way. Why are Americans never taught any of this?
That there’s a moral case for humane acts — like accepting
refugees — not just an economic one? Why does the kind of
discussion above — that links real world morality to economics
and society, and produces a more sophisticated account of the
prosperity of a nation — never really take place?

The
reason is that Americans have been confused about what morality is
for a very long time now. For example, in America, it is perfectly
acceptable to label selfishness, greed, spite, and cruelty merely as
“different kinds of morality.” But a sensible, thinking person
should reject this approach entirely. Me thinking your kids are not
really people or denying you healthcare or turning a blind when your
kids are shot at school is not moral in any sense of the word — and
so if we accept such stances merely as “different moralities”, we
undermine the idea of morality to the point it has no meaning
whatsoever. It may be something that elevates my status within my own
group — but in no sense is it moral, because what I give to my
own, I merely take away from yours.

At
minimum, performing one’s moral duty as a citizen of a society is
to imagine, to learn about, to reason towards, how to care for
all — not just some, those of your own tribe, race, color,
creed, religion, place, or stratum. When I put it to you that way, it
should be much clearer where America’s problems stem from. It
struggles to reach the mature morality of a developed nation, because
it has never really built moral muscles to begin with. America’s
moral horizons never really expand beyond the idea of caring for your
own tribe or group — that is the toxic residue of centuries of
slavery and segregation, which resulted in a social philosophy of
almost pure atomic individualism, bitter competition, and power,
money, and status as the prizes to be won. The idea that one’s
moral duty as a citizen is to care for all — how could it ever
develop in an America that was segregated until the 1970s?

But
today, that failure to develop moral muscles has left America in a
state of moral collapse. It is having a kind of implosive
blowback — only having been taught to care for themselves, or,
at best, their own kind, Americans are left unable to build a truly
modern society.

And
yet at the same time, Americans aren’t often offered a perspective
of themselves that goes beyond economistic — mere cogs in a
capitalist machine, not truly moral agents. But being true moral
agents is what forging a genuinely better society — a more
decent, humane, caring, courageous, and wise one — demands. How
can mere cogs in a capitalist machine ever do it? That is why cases
for human actions which only analyze economic consequences are badly
deficient things. They are well intentioned, but they don’t
ultimately help a society build its moral muscles. If the only reason
I am helping you is that I will grow rich — then I am not
acting morally at all, I am still just a self-interested automaton.
But if I am helping you because it is by helping that you that I help
all, of which I am a part, then I am a moral being, who can reason
morally, think morally, and act morally, too. Do you see the
difference?

The
atrophy of their moral muscles has left Americans weak where it
counts most. Not just economically or socially or politically. But
morally. One of the great lessons of the last century is that
morality and prosperity go hand in hand. The riches and wealth we
gain from exploiting others come with a curse — they cheat of
us modernity itself. But modernity’s riches — societies
wealthy in the most beneficial goods of all, like healthcare,
education, retirement, which then engender trust, meaning, belonging,
and purpose — cannot be had any other than by building one’s
moral muscles.

How
strong? So strong that it is each one’s first duty to lift up all.

THE

the Israel Lobby Control the US Government’.

Watch
the film the Israel lobby didn’t want you to see

The
Electronic Intifada
 2
November 2018

Update: On
6 November, The Electronic Intifada published the final two episodes
of
 The
Lobby – USA.
You
can
watch
episodes three and four here
.

The
Electronic Intifada has obtained a complete copy of
The
Lobby – USA
,
a four-part undercover investigation by Al Jazeera into Israel’s
covert influence campaign in the United States.

We
are releasing the leaked film simultaneously with
France’s
Orient XXI and
Lebanon’s
Al-Akhbar,
which have respectively subtitled the episodes in
French and Arabic.

The
film was made by Al Jazeera during 2016 and was completed in
October 2017.

But
it was
censored after
Qatar, the gas-rich Gulf emirate that funds Al Jazeera, came under
intense
Israel
lobby pressure
 not
to air the film.

Although
Al Jazeera’s director-general claimed last month that there were
outstanding legal issues with the film, his assertions have
been
flatly
contradicted by his own journalists
.

In
March, The Electronic Intifada was the
first
to report
 on
any of the film’s specific content. We
followed
this in August
 by
publishing the first extract of the film, and
shortly
after
 Max
Blumenthal at the
Grayzone
Project
released others.

Since
then, The Electronic Intifada has released
three
other extracts
,
and several other journalists have watched the entire film and
written about it – including
Alain
Gresh
 and Antony
Loewenstein
.

Now
The Electronic Intifada can reveal for the first time that it has
obtained all four parts of the film.

You
can watch the first two parts in the video embeds above and below. (deel 3 en 4 onder dit artikel van EI)

To
get unprecedented access to the Israel lobby’s inner workings,
undercover reporter “Tony” posed as a pro-Israel volunteer
in Washington.

The
resulting film exposes the efforts of Israel and its lobbyists to spy
on, smear and intimidate US citizens who support
Palestinian human rights, especially BDS – the boycott,
divestment and sanctions movement.

It
shows that Israel’s semi-covert
black-ops government
agency, the
Ministry
of Strategic Affairs
,
is operating this effort in collusion with an extensive network
of US-based organizations.

These
include the
Israel
on Campus Coalition
The
Israel Project
 and
the
Foundation
for Defense of Democracies
.

Censored
by Qatar

The
film was suppressed after the government of Qatar came under intense
pressure not to release it – ironically from the very same lobby
whose influence and antics the film exposes.

Clayton
Swisher, Al Jazeera’s head of investigations,
revealed in
an article for
The
Forward
 in
March that Al Jazeera had sent more than 70 letters to individuals
and organizations who appear in or are discussed in the film,
providing them with an opportunity to respond.

Only
three did so. Instead, pro-Israel groups have endeavored to suppress
the film that exposes the lobby’s activities.

In
April, Al Jazeera’s management was
forced
to deny a claim
 by
the hard-right Zionist Organization of America that the film had been
canceled altogether.

In
June, The Electronic Intifada
learned
that a high level source
 in
Doha had said the film’s indefinite delay was due to “national
security” concerns of the Qatari government.

Covert action

As revealed
in a clip published by The Electronic Intifada earlier this week
,
the film shows Julia

Reifkind
– then an Israeli embassy employee – describing her typical work
day as “mainly gathering intel, reporting back to Israel … to
report back to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of
Strategic Affairs.”

She
discusses the Israeli government “giving our support” to front
groups “in that behind-the-scenes way.”

Reifkind
also admits to using fake Facebook profiles to infiltrate the circles
of Palestine solidarity activists on campus.

The
film also reveals that US-based groups coordinate their efforts
directly with the Israeli government, particularly its
Ministry
of Strategic Affairs
.

Run
by a former military intelligence officer, the ministry is in charge
of
Israel’s
global campaign of covert sabotage
 targeting
the BDS movement.

The
film shows footage of the very same ex-military intelligence
officer,
Sima
Vaknin-Gil
,
claiming to have mapped Palestinian rights activism “globally. Not
just the United States, not just campuses, but campuses and
intersectionality and labor unions and churches.”

She
promises to use this data for “offense activity” against
Palestine activists.

Jacob
Baime, executive director of the Israel on Campus Coalition, claims
in the undercover footage that his organization uses “corporate
level, enterprise-grade social media intelligence software” to
gather lists of Palestine-related student events on campus,
“generally within about 30 seconds or less” of them being
posted online.

Baime
also admits on hidden camera that his group “coordinates” with
the Israeli Ministry of Strategic Affairs.

Baime
states that his researchers “issue early warning alerts to our
partners” – including Israeli ministries.

Baime’s
colleague Ian Hersh admits in the film to adding Israel’s “Ministry
of Strategic Affairs to our operations and intelligence brief.”

Psychological warfare”

Baime
describes how his group has used anonymous websites to
target activists.

With
the anti-Israel people, what’s most effective, what we’ve found
at least in the last year, is you do the opposition research, put up
some anonymous website, and then put up targeted Facebook ads,”
Baime explains in
part
three of the film
.

Canary
Mission is a good example,” he states. “It’s
psychological warfare.”

The
film names, for the first time,
convicted
tax evader
 Adam
Milstein
 as
the multimillionaire funder and mastermind of Canary Mission – an
anonymous smear site targeting student activists.

The
Electronic Intifada
revealed
this in a clip in August
.

Eric
Gallagher, then fundraising director for The Israel Project, is seen
in the undercover footage admitting that “Adam Milstein, he’s the
guy who funds” Canary Mission.

Milstein
also funds The Israel Project, Gallagher states.

Gallagher
says that when he was working for
AIPAC,
Washington’s most powerful Israel lobby group, “I was literally
emailing back and forth with [Adam Milstein] while he was in jail.”

Despite
not replying to Al Jazeera’s request for comment,
Milstein
denied that
he and his family foundation “are funders of Canary Mission” on
the same day The Electronic Intifada published the clip.

Since
then, Josh Nathan-Kazis of
The
Forward
 has identified
several other groups
 in
the US who fund Canary Mission.

Suppressed film

In
March, The Electronic Intifada
published the
first details of what is in the film.

We
reported that it showed Sima Vaknin-Gil claiming to have leading
neoconservative think tank the Foundation for Defense of Democracies
working for her ministry.

The
undercover footage shows Vaknin-Gil claiming that “We have FDD.
We have others working on” projects including “data gathering,
information analysis, working on activist organizations, money trail.
This is something that only a country, with its resources, can do
the best.”

As
noted in part one of the documentary, the existence of the film and
the identity of the undercover reporter became known after footage he
had shot for it was used in Al Jazeera’s
The
Lobby
 –
about Israel’s covert influence campaign in the UK –
aired in early 2017.

Since
then, Israel lobbyists have heavily pressured Qatar to prevent
the US film from airing.

Foreign agent”

Clayton
Swisher, Al Jazeera’s head of investigations,
first
confirmed in October 2017
that
the network had run an undercover reporter in the US Israel
lobby at the same time as in the UK.

Swisher
promised the film would be released “very soon,” but it never
came out.

Multiple
Israel lobby sources
told Israel’s Haaretz newspaper
in February that they had received assurances from Qatari leaders
late last year that the documentary would not be aired.

Qatar denied
this
,
but the paper stood by its story.

Swisher’s
op-ed in
The
Forward
 was
his first public comment on the matter since he had announced
the documentary.

In
it, he refutes Israel lobby allegations about the film and expresses
frustration that Al Jazeera had not aired it, apparently due to
outside pressure.

Several
pro-Israel lawmakers in Washington have
piled
on more pressure by pushing
 the

Department
of Justice to force Al Jazeera to register as a “foreign agent”
under a counterespionage law dating from the 1930s.

The
Israel lobby goes to Doha

While
the film was delayed, a
wave
of prominent pro-Israel figures
 visited
Qatar at the invitation of its ruler, Emir
Tamim
bin Hamad Al Thani
.

They
have included some of the most right-wing and extreme figures among
Israel’s defenders in the US,
such
as
 Harvard
law professor Alan Dershowitz and Morton Klein, the head of the
Zionist Organization of America.

Swisher
wrote in
The
Forward
 that
he ran into Dershowitz at a Doha restaurant during one of these
visits, and invited the professor to a private viewing of the film.

I
have no problem with any of the secret filming,” Swisher says
Dershowitz told him afterwards.

And
I can even see this being broadcast on PBS” –
the US public broadcaster.

Yet
it appears that Israel lobby efforts to quash the film were
successful – until now.

US
Blames Iran for Impoverishing Civilians While Prepping

Further
Sanctions

(CJ Opinion) — The
United States government is preparing to implement an additional
level of sanctions against Iran for its refusal to meet a dozen
demands that are so absurdly unreasonable that they have been
called
a
regime change policy in all but name
.
The sanctions which have already been implemented have
already
badly hurt
 the
Iranian economy, the sting of which is being felt first and foremost
by Iran’s poor and sickly.

In
an article titled “
Iran’s
poor to bear brunt of Trump’s oil sanctions
”, Financial
Times
 documents
how poor Iranians are already strained to the breaking point from the
cutbacks they’ve had to make in food and groceries. An article
titled “
In
Iran, US sanctions are being felt, with harsher measures to come

by the
Christian
Science Monitor
 details
difficulties Iranian charities are having getting medicine to sick
children, including chemotherapy treatment, having already run out of
four life-saving drugs. In an article titled “
US
fails to shield humanitarian trade with Iran as sanctions loom
”, Al
Monitor
 details
the way humanitarian aid, while ostensibly exempt from the sanctions,
has been severely impacted by their economic aspect because
humanitarian aid costs money. The
Wall
Street Journal
 further
explains the effects of America’s economic warfare on ordinary
Iranian civilians in an article titled “
Iran
Moves to Shelter Millions as U.S. Sanctions Bite
”.

This
is
before the
US implements a new level of attacks upon Iran’s oil industry, a
primary economic lifeline, which is scheduled to begin on November
fifth. If Iran can’t find a way to get around these crushing
sanctions in a significant way, many civilians already stretched far
too thin will be pushed past the breaking point.

And
who is the US government blaming for the consequences of its economic
warfare? Why, the Iranian government, of course.

Secretary Pompeo

@SecPompeo

The International Monetary Fund @IMFNews is projecting a 3.6% decline in ’s economy next year. That’s what happens when the ruling regime steals from its people and invests in Assad—instead of creating jobs for Iranians, they ruin the economy.

The
International Monetary Fund @IMFNews is projecting a 3.6% decline in
#Iran’s economy next year,”
tweeted Secretary
of State Mike Pompeo. “That’s what happens when the ruling regime
steals from its people and invests in Assad — instead of
creating jobs for Iranians, they ruin the economy.”

Pompeo
talks about the Iranian people a lot. A recent
State
Department release
 is
packed with lines like “Iran’s actions have made the country a
pariah, much to the despair of its own people”, and “clerics and
officials have wrapped themselves in the cloak of religion while
robbing the Iranian people blind,” and “The United States is
asking every nation that is sick and tired of the Islamic Republic’s
destructive behavior to stand up for the Iranian people.” But Mike
Pompeo does not care about the Iranian people. Plainly.

Sanctions
are so weird. Imagine if the US government had listed twelve
ridiculously extreme demands of Tehran, and then when those demands
weren’t met they launched a few dozen Tomahawk missiles into an
Iranian suburb. And imagine, if you will, what the response would be
if Secretary Pompeo had then issued a tweet saying “Boy, it sure
was awful of the Iranian regime to launch those missiles at its own
civilians!”

He
would never do such a thing, of course, because nobody would buy it.
But for some weird, entirely narrative-based reason, the US
government can get away with killing the same number of civilians by
depriving them of food and medicine and say it’s Iran’s fault for
not bowing to Washington’s twelve demands. The civilians would be
just as dead as they would have been if they were killed by Tomahawk
missiles, and the US government would be just as culpable for their
deaths as they would have been if they’d killed them by missile
strike. We can be absolutely certain that the US government would
acknowledge such economic sanctions as an act of war (
which
they unquestionably are
)
if any foreign nation ever implemented anything similar against
America. But for some weird, stupid, nonsense reason, the medieval
siege tactic of starving them to death and cutting them off from
supplies is something that can still be blamed on a sovereign nation
for refusing to obey the commands of a foreign government. For some
weird, stupid, nonsense reason, sanctions are the only form of
warfare where it is considered both legal and acceptable to
deliberately target a civilian population with lethal force.

Sam@sonofnariman

The responses to this Tweet caught me off guard. Thank you for the kind words. But now I feel selfish for writing it. I didn’t want or expect sympathy; I wanted to make a point about the impact of sanctions on Iran — that it’s the ordinary people who suffer. And for what?

This,
by the way, is all coming after the UN’s highest court, the
International Court of Justice (ICJ),
ordered the
United States to
remove
any impediments
 to
humanitarian aide in the sanctions that it has implemented, to which
Washington responded by
withdrawing
from two international agreements
 which
could lead to any legally binding rulings by the ICJ. Any other
nation which refuses to comply with UN rulings is branded a rogue
nation by the US-centralized empire and targeted for regime change,
but when the US does exactly the same thing we’re meant to look at
it as perfectly normal and acceptable.

The
US has defended its dismissal of the ICJ ruling by citing the
exemptions it has made for humanitarian aide in its sanctions, with
Secretary Pompeo
asserting
the following
:

Existing
exceptions, authorizations, and licensing policies for
humanitarian-related transactions and safety of flight will remain in
effect. The United States has been actively engaged on these issues
without regard to any proceeding before the ICJ. We’re working
closely with the Department of the Treasury to ensure that certain
humanitarian-related transactions involving Iran can and will
continue.”

Not
only is he not being accurate, he is lying,” Trita Parsi of the
National Iranian American Council
told
the
Real
News
 of
Pompeo’s remarks. “The Trump administration has not issued a
single license since they took power. They know quite well that
they’re doing everything to scare banks away from the Iranian
market, which then is affecting the ability for the Iranians to pay
for medicine and medical supplies, even though that is supposedly
exempt. So essentially what they’re saying, hey, we made those
exempt. Yes, but you have targeted the financial system so harshly,
so indiscriminately, so no bank is willing to handle transactions
with Iranian banks. And as a result the Iranians cannot buy medical
supplies, and their medical shortages are a direct result of the
sanctions.”

What
will Secretary Pompeo say when civilians begin dropping dead? Will he
claim that “the price is worth it”, as his predecessor
Madeleine
Albright said
 of
the thousands of Iraqi children killed in sanctions upon Iraq? Will
he cite the
constantly
recurring lie
 that
it is because Iran is the world’s top sponsor of terrorism? Will he
claim that it is because it is somehow wrong for Iran to defend its
ally Syria from the violent jihadist factions who attempted to effect
regime change in Damascus with western backing? Or will he just be
honest, and admit that it’s because Iran has one of the few
governments in the strategically crucial and resource-rich Middle
East which has refused to be absorbed into the blob of the US empire?

Hey, a girl can dream.

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor indigenous people day

Men
jaren.

(CONVERSATION— When
President Barack Obama
created Deferred
Action for Childhood Arrivals, the 2012 program that
offered
undocumented
young people brought to the U.S. as children a path into society
,
for a moment the ideals of the American Dream seemed, at least for
this group, real.

We
call these kids, many of whom are now adults, “
Dreamers,”
because they are chasing the American Dream – a
national
aspiration for upward economic mobility built on physical mobility
.
Fulfilling your dreams often means following them wherever they may
lead – even into another country.

The
Trump administration’s decision to
cancel
DACA
 –
which is currently on hold while it is
litigated
in the courts
 –
and
build
a U.S.-Mexico border wall
 has
endangered those dreams by subjecting 800,000 young people to
deportation.

But
the
notion
underlying both Trump’s DACA repeal and the wall
 –
which is that “
illegal
immigrants, most of them from Mexico, are
stealing
U.S. jobs
 and
hurting society – reflects a profound misunderstanding of American
history.

On Indigenous
Peoples Day
,
it’s worth underscoring something that many archaeologists know:
Many of the values that inspire the
American
Dream
 –
liberty,
equality and the
pursuit of happiness
 –
date back to well
before
the creation of the U.S.-Mexico border
 and
before freedom-seeking Pilgrim immigrants arrived at Plymouth Rock in
1620.

They
originate with native North Americans.

A
Native American Dream

The
modern rendition of the American Dream can be traced back to 1774,
when Virginia’s governor, John Murray, the fourth earl of
Dunmore,
wrote that
even if Americans “attained Paradise, they would move on if they
heard of a better place farther west.”

The
actual term “American Dream” was popularized in 1931 by the
businessman and historian
James
Truslow Adams
.
For him, its realization depended on not just being able to better
oneself but also, through movement and human interaction, seeing your
neighbors bettered as well.

The
first peoples to come to the Americas also came in search of a better
life.

That
happened 14,000 years ago in the last Ice Age when
nomadic
pioneers
,
ancestors to modern Native Americans and First Nations, arrived from
the Asian continent and roamed freely throughout what now comprises
Canada, the United States and Mexico. Chasing
mammoth,
ancient bison and the elephant-like Gomphothere
,
they moved constantly to secure the health of their communities.

The
indigenous communities of the Americas knew none of these modern-day
national borders. USGS

A
more recent example of the power of migration reappears about 5,000
years ago, when
a
large group of people from what is today central Mexico
 spread
into the American Southwest and farther north, settling as far up as
western North America. With them they brought corn, which now
drives
a significant part of the American economy
,
and a way of speaking that birthed over 30 of the 169
contemporary
indigenous languages
 still
spoken in the United States today.

The
Hohokam

This
globalist world view was alive and well 700 years ago as well when
people from what is now northern Arizona fled a decades-long drought
and rising authoritarianism under religious leaders.

Many
migrated hundreds of miles south to southern Arizona, joining the
Hohokam –
ancestors
to modern O’odham nations
 –
who had long thrived in the harsh Sonoran desert by
irrigating
vast fields of agave, corn, squash, beans and cotton
.

When
the northern migrants arrived to this hot stretch of land around the
then-nonexistent U.S.-Mexico frontier, Hohokam religious and
political life was controlled by a handful of elites. Social
mechanisms restricting the accumulation of power by individuals had
slowly broken down.

For
decades after their arrival, migrants and locals interacted. From
that exchange, a Hohokam cultural revolution grew. Together, the two
communities created a commoners’ religious social movement
that
archaeologists
call Salado
,
which featured a feasting practice that invited all village members
to participate.

As
ever more communities adopted this
equitable
tradition
,
political power – which at the time was embedded in religious power
– became more equally spread through society.

Elites
lost their control and, eventually, abandoned their temples.

America’s
Egalitarian Mound-Builders

The
Hohokam tale unearths another vaunted American ideal that originates
in indigenous history: equality.

Long
before it was codified in the
Declaration
of Independence,
,
equality was enacted through the building of large
mounds.

Massive
earthen structures like these are often acts of highly hierarchical
societies – think of the pyramids of the ancient Egyptians,
constructed by
masses
of laborers
 as
the final resting place of
powerful
pharaohs
,
or those of the
rigid,
empire-building
 Aztecs.

But
great power isn’t always top-down.
Poverty
Point
,
in the lower Mississippi River Valley of what’s now Louisiana, is a
good example. This massive site, which consists of five mounds, six
concentric semi-elliptical ridges and a central plaza, was built some
4,000 years ago by hunter-fisher-gatherers with little entrenched
hierarchy.

Point: a city built on cooperation. Herb Roe/Wikipedia, CC BY-SA

Originally,
archaeologists
believed that
such societies without the inequality and authoritarianism that
defined the ancient Egyptian, Roman, and Aztec empires could not have
constructed something so significant – and, if so, only over
decades or centuries.

But
excavations in the last 20 years have revealed that large sections of
Poverty Point were
actually
constructed in only a few months
.
These Native Americans organized in groups to undertake massive
projects as a communal cooperative, leaving a built legacy of
equality across America’s landscape.

The
Consensus-Building Haudenosaunee

The
Haudenosaunee, or
Iroquois,
offer a more modern example of such consensus-based decision-making
practices.

These
peoples – who’ve lived on both sides of the St. Lawrence river in
modern-day Ontario and the U.S. Great Lakes states for
hundreds,
if not thousands, of years
 –
built their society on collective labor arrangements.

They
ostracized people who exhibited “selfish” behavior, and women and
men often worked together in
large
groups
.
Everyone lived together in communal longhouses. Power was also
shifted constantly to prevent hierarchy from forming, and decisions
were made by coalitions of kin groups and communities.

Many
of these participatory political practices
continue
to this day
.

The
Haudenosaunee sided with the British during the 1776
American
Revolution
 and
were largely driven off their land after the war. Like
many
native populations
,
the Haudenosaunee Dream turned into a nightmare of invasion,
plague
and genocide
 as
European migrants pursued their American Dream that excluded others.

Native
Americans at Standing Rock

The
long indigenous history of rejecting authoritarianism continues,
including the 2016 battle for
environmental
justice at Standing Rock
,
South Dakota.

There,
a resistance movement coalesced around a
horizontally
organized youth group
 that
rejected the planned
Dakota
Access oil pipeline
.

American pioneers continue to fight for the same ideals that inspire
the American Dream, including equality and freedom. John

The
movement centered on an environmental cause in part because nature is
sacred to the Lakota – and to
many
other indigenous communities
 –
but also because communities of color often
bear
the brunt of economic and urban development decisions
.

Standing
Rock was the indigenous fight against repression and for the American
Dream, gone 21st century.

Redefining
the North American Dream

Anthropologists
and historians haven’t always recognized the quintessentially
Native American ideals present in the American Dream.

In
the early 19th century, the prominent social philosopher Lewis Henry
Morgan
called
the Native Americans he studied “savages.”
 And
for centuries, America’s native peoples have seen their
cultural
heritage attributed to seemingly everyone but their ancestors
 –
even to an invented
“lost”
white race
.

America’s
indigenous past was not romantic. There were petty disputes,
bloody
intergroup conflicts
 and
slavery, namely
along
the Northwest Coast
 and American
Southeast
.

But
the ideals of freedom and equality – and the right that Americans
can move across this vast continent to seek it out – survive
through the millennia. Societies based on those values have prospered
here.

So
the next time a politician invokes American values to
promote
a policy of closed borders
 or selfish
individualism
,
remember who originally espoused the American Dream – and first
sought to live it, too.

Hoorde afgelopen uur op BBC World Service radio (rond 14.20 u.

Duizenden ‘illegale’ kinderen in VS concentratiekampen…….

Hoewel

THOUSANDS
OF UNDOCUMENTED CHILDREN KEPT IN ‘MODERN-DAY CONCENTRATION CAMPS’

Immigrant Camps

Although
hundreds of children were previously released to their families after
being separated by US federal agents earlier this year, data recently
obtained by The New York Times this week revealed that some 12,800
others are still being held in detention centers.

It
should be noted that the large amount of detainees isn’t due
to an influx in migrant children; rather it’s the result
of fewer children being released into the custody
of guardians or sponsors.

LET
OP: OP DEZE PLEK KAN JE IN HET ORIGINEEL EEN FRAGMENT VAN EEN RADIO UITZENDING (11 MINUTEN) TERUGLUISTEREN, HIER DE LINK

Juan
José Gutiérrez, the executive director of the Full Rights
for Immigrants Coalition (FRIC VS), told
Radio
Sputnik’s Loud & Clear
 on Thursday
that a majority of those being detained are teenagers
from Mexico and Central America who traveled unaccompanied.

These
individuals are not being picked up by family, friends or
relatives or any kind of sponsor willing to sponsor
children, because the [US President] Donald Trump administration is
making it harder and harder under this zero tolerance
immigration policy for people to step forward and be able
to sponsor these children and get them out of detention,”
he told hosts Brian Becker and John Kiriakou.

What
we have here is that all these children are being kept in these
modern-day concentration camps called immigration shelters,” he
added, before noting that owners of the shelters are making
a profit off of others’ suffering.”

The
Trump administration issued a new rule in June that states
sponsors must be fingerprinted in order to have a child
released into their care, and that their information has to then
be shared with immigration officials.

Children
are being kept in dozens of shelters scattered
throughout the US as their individual cases travel
through the US court system at a snail’s space. On
Tuesday, it was reported that a tent city for migrant boys
in Tornillo, Texas, would stay open until at least the end
of 2019, marking the third time the temporary shelter saw its
closure delayed.

Kenneth
Wolfe, a Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) spokesperson,
told CBS News Tuesday that the compound would be expanding in order
to accommodate some 3,800 additional beds. Though the facility
originally held some 400 boys when it opened on June 14, 2018,
it currently has the means to house 1,200 kids.

Acknowledging
that owners of the private detention camps are lining their
pockets with dollar bills, Gutiérrez told Kiriakou that “this
is [being done] in the nature of capitalism, the so-called
free enterprise system, where you always put profits before people’s
rights and their needs.”

In
this case it is profits before the rights of undocumented
teenagers,” he said.

Reports
surfaced earlier this week that the Trump administration had diverted
some $10 million from several agencies, including the US Federal
Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), to fund the US Immigration
and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE). This was in addition
to the $200 million that the Trump administration redirected
from the Department of Homeland Security to ICE
over the summer. Of the $200 million, $93 million was allocated
for detention centers.
