What America Still
Doesn’t Understand About Fascism

What
Happens When a Rich Society Suddenly Becomes a Poor One?

Today, I read, as you probably
did,
that
Steve Bannon is to keynote the New Yorker’s Ideas Festival
.
LOL — it should go without saying that’s a pretty good
indication that a society is out of ideas. Yet I can almost hear the
reasoning in the New Yorker’s offices. Their problem is that
American thinkers have no real explanation for fascism — just
fairy tales — and that leaves you with…the fascists. Or maybe
they just wanted to stoke controversy and make money (I’d give them
more credit than that, but I digress.)

Let’s take the fairy tales Americans
tell themselves about fascism — there are three — one by
one, and then discuss what really causes fascism (and why American
thinkers are completely unable to get it, even at this late stage).
You can skip this part if you want the less nerdy stuff.

Fascism is caused by identity
politics.
This
is what Francis Fukuyama suggests in his new book
 — and
I’d say he should be ashamed of himself, if it weren’t so funny
and laughable. I decide to be a gender-nonconforming them, not a he
anymore, and you respond by…cheering on Mexican babies as they’re
put in camps? LOL, you see why I think American thinkers don’t know
how to think anymore? It’s not just childishly absurd — it’s
a grotesque form of victim-blaming, that obviates freedom or liberty
in any genuine sense, every bit the equivalent of saying “well, you
shouldn’t have worn that dress…!”

Fascism is a cycle, a backlash
against “too much liberalism.” This seems to explain things — but
it doesn’t. What is “too much liberalism?” When we have
healthcare? Or just sewers and pipes? Does that mean that human
beings are doomed to be fascists? This is a kind of theology of
individualism — not really an explanation for fascism.

Fascism happens when white people
are afraid of becoming a minority. This explanation is trotted out
regularly by American pundits. But whites in Sweden are in no danger
of becoming a minority — yet extremism is in second place
there, in the upcoming election. That’s true in Italy, Poland,
Hungary, and Russia, too. So this theory is obviously false — it
can’t explain the global rise of fascism even a bit.

These three explanations lead to what
I call the meteor strike theory of fascism. Since we have no real
explanation, it becomes a random event, a kind of natural
catastrophe. But if it’s a natural catastrophe, then we have no
control over it. And if we have no control over it, then maybe the
best we can do is…invite the fascists to headline our festivals. As
a way to negotiate and bargain with them. Does that make sense?

Now. Let us try to look at all the
above from another perspective. Not the one of what we believe, but
simply what we know. What do we know about how America has changed
over the last thirty years?

80% of Americans now live paycheck to
paycheck. 70% have less than $1000 in savings. 70% expect their kids
to live worse lives. Life expectancy is falling. Real incomes are
shrinking. Suicides are skyrocketing. Depression and loneliness are
soaring. The old can’t afford to retire, and the young can’t
afford to start families. The middle class has imploded, and the
ranks of the poor have swollen. What does all this really say?

America is a rich country
that effectively became a poor one — in the space of a
generation
. Is it
any surprise that this sudden, unexpected, historic collapse would
massively, catastrophically destabilize society — and give rise
to fascism?

(Perhaps you object. The mistake many
Americans make is to think that flat-screen TVs and microwave ovens
somehow make them better off than people in poorer countries. They
don’t. People in Pakistan and Chile can afford those things, too.
Poverty — the experience of deprivation — is a truer
thing that not having a flat-screen TV. It’s about living at the
edge of perpetual ruin, which is something that most Americans now
face daily)

How might a society plunging from
riches into poverty destabilize into fascism, precisely? The social
bonds in a town or community get blown apart. People turn to fascism
for belonging. The sense of optimism and faith in the future people
have is destroyed. They turn to fascism for hope again. All the good
jobs are gone. People seek scapegoats to blame for their
miseries — the very ones they’ve barely learned to tolerate
living next to. Life is a frightening thing now — people seek
the soothing, comforting words of a demagogue.

You must work harder every year, just
to keep your head above water — the demagogue is the only one
who tells you this is wrong and unjust, while elites don’t seem to
notice or care much at all. You never expected to be poor — yet
here you are. Suicides and illnesses and drug use have come to
surround you. Everything seems broken — towns, communities,
cities, bonds, families, jobs, livelihoods, careers, even people. In
the end, you turn to fascism to restore all the things you feel have
been taken away from you — trust, meaning, purpose, belonging,
optimism, opportunity, fairness, dignity, pride, and strength.

Those things are what poverty is
really made of, and the new poverty that Americans face isn’t just
financial — it’s made of all the elements of a decent life.
In hard terms, poverty of human, intellectual, social, emotional, and
civic capital, to name just a few.

Now, if the theory is correct, we’d
expect to see fascism rising in places where all the above is
true — where poverty in all these forms has risen, where all
these real “capital deficits” have grown. Where are those places?
They are not places that have always been poor — but of
downward mobility. And that’s precisely what we do see. American
fascism isn’t rising in inner cities — but in Rust Belt
towns, in exurbs, in third-tier cities, in the regions where people
expected easy, comfortable lives, like their parents and
grandparents — but instead, are ending up elsewhere, and can’t
understand why, or what to do about it all. Bang! The fascist spark
is lit by the implosion of the middle class.

The fascist isn’t the
prole — he’s the frustrated bourgeoisie. The one whom
capitalism promised to make a capitalist — but only did it to
sell him on capitalism.
 It
had no intention of ever making him a true capitalist, like Bezos,
Gates, or Buffett — why would it? Capitalism isn’t there to
make him rich, it’s there to make them rich. So the prole turns to
tribalism, hierarchy, and predation, then, for the power and riches
and comfort he was promised — and still hungers for.

So now our theory goes something like
this. Capitalism promised proles bourgeois lives — it was the
best marketing trick in history, perhaps. But all it ever really
wanted to do was to squeeze the proles — and maximize profits.
Those disappointed would-be bourgeoisie, who are now poorer than
ever, enraged, losing trust and faith in the system, living at the
edge, turn to fascism. They band together into tribes of the pure—
so the prole, if he can’t be a real capitalist, a true bourgeois,
can at least be powerful enough to prey on the weak. The sudden,
jabbing sting of poverty, the feeling of being empty, hopeless, weak,
damaged, forgotten, abandoned, becomes a sense of of belonging,
meaning, purpose, safety, security, and strength. Now he is someone
again.

So the disappointed prole turns to
fascism to restore precisely the things that capitalism took away
from him — what it was impoverishing him of while he wasn’t
looking. But that means that he is at the mercy of tribal logic, in
all its fearfulness and cowardice and stupidity, too. The rage that
should be directed at capitalism is pointed at scapegoats. The anger
that should be directed at those above him is aimed below him. The
contempt he should have for the rich is turned into scorn of the
poor. The disappointment he should have in greed, egotism, and
self-concern instead turns to a vengeful resentment of the smallest
differences. He imagines that he is history’s great victim,
persecuted by malign forces, hunted, and hounded — and so
everything becomes an existential battle, in which only the strong
survive, and must act pre-emptively, to eliminate their enemies.
Self-preservation means that the price of survival is to become a
predator. Nobody will ever make him poor again — he will make
sure of it, by making everyone else less of a person at all.

Predatory
capitalism degenerates into fascism, by creating the glittering
expectation of riches, but the shattering reality of poverty.
Enraged, embittered, aggrieved, people turn on their neighbours,
colleagues, friends, and peers, preying on the weak, to gain back the
very things capitalism took away from them — even as it
promised them dreams of bourgeois wealth.
 If it can’t
live like the bourgeois, as capitalism promised, the tribe will take
whatever it can, by more vicious means, not to be poor in these ways
ever again. Democracy itself begins to wither and die. Society
shrivels. Norms and values are ripped apart. Everything seems to
shatter.

The world has seen all this before.
This was the story of Germany in the 1930s, almost exactly. A rich
society which had suddenly become poor. A middle class imploding.
People turning on their friends and neighbours. The tribe seizing for
itself what capitalism had promised — but never had any
intention of delivering. In more and more violent ways. Led by a
demagogue. Who made people feel strong and powerful and hopeful
again. Bang! Fascism.

That story is being retold in American
today. America can’t quite bring itself to believe it. It is too
busy telling itself fairy tales and fables. That is why Steve Bannon
can headline a festival of ideas — LOL — while a nation
seems to think fascism is the equivalent of a meteor strike. Fairy
tales, my friends, do not help you, in the deep, dark night, when the
monsters judder and screech.
They are only there to lull us asleep.

echt onze borst natmaken.

Neil
deGrasse Tyson: A Celebrity Salesman for the
Military-Industrial-Complex

The
idea for this article came from one of those annoying “Recommended
for you” thumbnails on YouTube. The title was: “Neil deGrasse
Tyson: Trump’s Space Force (USSF) Is Not a Crazy Idea.” Having written
about and researched space weapons for over a decade, I was intrigued
as to why a seemingly intelligent man (Tyson) would want to help
promote an agenda that will literally imperil us all, namely the
weaponization of space: the end-game of which is global domination in
the interests of economic neoliberalism. So I clicked. Tyson was
talking to host Stephen Colbert about the wonders of space
militarization (by the US, of course, not its enemies).

It
turns out that Tyson is promoting a new, co-authored book,
Accessory
to War: the Unspoken Alliance Between Astrophysics and the
Military
 (W.W.
Norton, released, tastelessly, on 11 September), which is all about
the history of science militarization. The book is a disgraceful
attempt to use history as an excuse to justify the continuation and
expansion of taxpayer-funded R&D into hi-technology via military
budgets. By now, the hi-tech sector dominates the top US
corporations: Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, and Microsoft. Much of
the innovations used by these companies were initiated in the
military.

Tyson
is doing the rounds on national media, including Colbert and
CBS
This Morning,
 to
promote the book and more broadly continued public expenditure on the
Pentagon. After a little digging, I found that America’s favourite
astrophysicist is a glorified salesman for the
military-industrial-complex.

TYSON’S
MILITARY-SCIENCE BACKGROUND

Having
graduated from the Bronx High School of Science, Tyson went on to
earn a PhD in astrophysics from Columbia University in 1991. From
1996, Tyson has been Frederick P. Rose director of the
Hayden
Planetarium
 at
the American Museum of Natural History.

Pretty
soon, the George W. Bush administration was calling on Tyson’s
talents for all things space-related. Under President Bill Clinton,
the Space Command (later Air Force Space Command [USAFSC]) announced plans to
dominate the entire world by force,
“Full
Spectrum Dominance”
 as
the successors continue to call it. In 2001, under Bush, the
Rumsfeld
Space Commission,
 sought
ways to expand the  weaponization of space to reinforce US-led
corporate globalization and the architecture — satellites, GPS, the
internet, etc. — that supports it. In the same year, Tyson became a
formal employee of the Bush administration. One of his biographical
webpages
states:

In
2001, Tyson was appointed by President Bush to serve on a 12-member
commission that studied the Future of the US Aerospace Industry. The
final report was published in 2002 and contained recommendations (for
Congress and for the major agencies of the government) that would
promote a thriving future of transportation, space exploration, and
national security.”

The
Final Report of the Commission on the Future of the United
StatesAerospace Industry,

 on
which Tyson worked, makes for an interesting read. It starts from an
elite-nationalistic viewpoint, namely that of maintaining US
supremacy in innovation before, discussing in Appendix G:
“Astronautical research and development, including resources,
personnel, equipment, and facilities; Outer space exploration and
control.” “Control,” no less. Controlling space is a core part
of “Full Spectrum Dominance.” Tyson’s biography
also
states that
in 2004, he:

was
once again appointed by President Bush to serve on a 9-member
commission on the Implementation of the United States Space
Exploration Policy, dubbed the ‘Moon, Mars, and Beyond’
commission. This group navigated a path by which the new space vision
can become a successful part of the American agenda.”

The
follow-up Tyson-co-authored report,
 A
Journey to Inspire, Innovate, and Discover
,
also makes interesting reading. It states:

Of
particular importance to the space exploration vision is a strong
partnership between NASA and the Department of Defense, where
research, technical assistance, and operational assets are often
shared. The Commission believes that the role of the existing
Partnership Council – wherein NASA, the Air Force, and National
Reconnaissance Office (NRO) coordinate mutual work and interests – should
also focus actively on supporting the new vision.”

The
report says the US should “DARPA-ize” (my phrase) NASA. DARPA is
the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency which uses taxpayer
money to innovate the hi-technology which now dominates the top-ten
list of US corporations. DARPA famously brought us the internet, for
instance. The
report says:

we
suggest that the Administration and Congress create within NASA an
organization drawing upon lessons learned from the Defense Advanced
Research Projects Agency (DARPA). DARPA is a highly successful
organization that is chartered to fund high-risk/high return basic
research in support of national defense priorities.”

R&D
SALESMAN

The
high-risk is paid for by the taxpayer who then buy back the given
product on the consumer market. For example: touch-screen technology
now used by Apple, for instance, came out of technology
developed
for the Air Force
.

Disturbingly,
the report recommends that NASA integrate a contract system like the
US Missile “Defense” program, which is so  essential to the
overall goal of “Full Spectrum Dominance” (on his recent CBS
piece, Tyson doesn’t challenge the erroneous assumption  that
the system is for “defense”), The
report says:
“In the case of U.S. Missile Defense, for example, the integrator
is responsible for the overall system of systems architecture, and
for integrating the space, air, land, and sea elements of the
architecture.”

The
goal of a successful propaganda system is to sell science designed
and applied for military use (itself serving the dual-functions of
ensuring US global corporate supremacy and innovation in the hi-tech
economy) to the public as “cool” and fun. Enter Tyson. Since
working for the federal government on these schemes, he has
hosted the
PBS-NOVA series, Origins; worked on The Pluto Files documentary;
appeared on ScienceNOW; and has hosted StarTalk (funded in part by
the taxpayer-funded National Science Foundation [NSF]), which features
comedians who attract laypeople to science.

Tyson
joined the US military’s 15-member Defense Innovation Board (DIB),
launched in 2016. The board advises the Defense Secretary on numerous
issues. DIB continues the all-American tradition of ripping off
taxpayers by using their money to invest in hi-tech innovation under
the cover of a “defense” budget. DIB
says:

Some
of the foremost topics the DIB is exploring include artificial
intelligence, machine learning, workforce capacity, organizational
structure, hiring and retention strategies, acquisition reform,
electronic and drone warfare, software capabilities, and IT
infrastructure.”

FLEECING
THE PUBLIC

So,
with this background, it’s not surprising that Tyson would appear
on national television and talk up the Defense Department. But it’s
crucial for any successful propaganda campaign that his record with
the federal government be suppressed, minimized or justified. Hence,
the failure (refusal?) of host Stephen Colbert to mention any of this
to the casual viewer. The show gives the impression that Tyson is
just a fun and intelligent man with no vested interests. In fact,
Tyson lies and tells both Colbert and CBS: “I have no dog in this
fight” in relation to Trump’s (read: the Pentagon’s) creation
of a “Space Force.”

As
noted, Tyson has been a government advisor and at the time of
appearing on the shows was a member of a DoD board. In addition, we
all have a “dog in the fight” of space weaponization because
fragile and complex space systems could result in catastrophic
failures, including miscommunications which can escalate into
near-terminal catastrophe, as has happened many times in the past in
relation to nuclear weapons (see, for instance, Daniel Ellsberg’s
chilling book,
The
Doomsday

Machine).
Adding a space dimension to fraught and dangerous geopolitical
situations only adds to the risk.

Last
month, US Defense Secretary and war criminal, James
“it’s
fun to shoot some people”
 Mattis,
told reporters that the Pentagon was advocating for a separate US
Space Command in response to the Defense Policy Bill’s plan to
integrate space systems under the Strategic Command (which also
oversees nuclear strategy). Mattis was initially against this,
says
Space
News,
 but
has changed his mind in light of Trump’s (read: the Pentagon’s)
insistence on having a “Space Force”.

With
the new “Space Force” (as yet a nickname) potentially going
ahead, the friendly faces of US imperialism are rolled out to justify
expanding the militarization of space. Luckily, Tyson has a new book
on the same topic to promote. In addition, Trump’s undeserved
reputation as a moron (see my book
President
Trump, Inc.
)
required the media presence of a respected professional (i.e., Tyson)
to promote the “Space Force.”

AN
AMORAL BOOK

In Accessory
to War
,
the authors write:

A
vibrant economy … depends on at least one of the following: the
profit motive,  war on the ground, or war in space … Must war
and profit be what drive both civilization on Earth and the
investigation of other worlds? History … makes it hard to answer no
… Star charts, calendars, chronometers, telescopes, maps,
compasses, rockets, satellites, drones–these war not inspirational
civilian endeavors. Dominance was their goal; increase of knowledge
was incidental.

The
first few years after 9/11 were a fine time to be mercenary, a
military engineering firm, or a giant aerospace company.”

Recall
that Tyson worked to promote the aeroindustry. Tyson acknowledges
that “the space research my colleagues and I conduct plugs firmly
and fundamentally into the nation’s military might.” At a
conference involving military brass, Tyson was directly exposed via
live-feed to the realities of blowing women and children apart with
hi-tech weapons in Iraq in 2003 from high-ground platforms. He
writes, self-pityingly:

Blinking
back tears and fighting to keep my composure, I thought about leaving
the conference. I began to choreograph my resignation from the board
of the Space Foundation. But at the same time I felt I couldn’t
just walk out of the sanctum of war…

[W]ithout
the power sought by its participants … and without the tandem
investments in  technology fostered by that quest for power,
there would be no astronomy, no astrophysics, no astronauts, no
exploration of the solar system, and barely any comprehension of the
cosmos.”

That’s
alright then. Tyson told CBS This Morning that he found a
psychological trick to avoid feeling responsible, namely to blame
everyone else: “I had to re-direct the causes and effects of this
violence, and say, ‘No. It’s us, the electorate’ ” — they
voted Bush in late-2000 (yeah, right). “If you have access to
weaponry that can achieve a geopolitical goal that is noble then, I’m
not there to stand in judgement of it,” he also told CBS.

MEANWHILE,
IN THE REAL WORLD…

Tyson
is careful to avoid mentioning that both China and Russia have
repeatedly advocated for signing a peace treaty with the US, both
for
space and cyber
warfare

not because Russia and China are “good guys,” but because as much
weaker military powers it is in their interests to constrain US
military actions and not provoke the superpower by engaging in the
same, unless the US does it first. In fact, on the Colbert show,
Tyson even mentions the Outer Space Treaty of 1967 and ridicules it
as an equivalent of singing “Cumbayá.”

Meanwhile,
groups are actively thinking up ways to transform military spending
into peaceful R&D for a green- and other hi-tech economy.

report by
the German-based institute IFSH notes that military R&D is not an
inevitability. Following the end of the Cold War, military R&D
declined. But, “[e]ven in the US, civilian spending is now
substantially larger than military spending.” Why, then, place
emphasis on  military R&D, as Tyson does? In most countries,
says the author, “There has been a major shift towards military use
of technologies driven by civilian r&d, particularly in
electronics.”

In
terms of practical alternatives, Campaign Against the Arms
Trade
notes that
skills shortages in the UK (the same applies to the US) means that
renewable energy sectors would be glad to employ people previously
skilled in the arms industry. Doing so lacks political will only. In
addition, the Campaign Against Climate Change
reckons that
the UK could become a carbon neutral economy, employing one million
people, for £19bn a year, which is about half the current military
budget. This would also involve the kind of technological innovations
currently privileged by the military sector.

The
US transformed itself into a war economy during WWII and has remained
that ever since. But, with enough public pressure, it can be
transformed into a peace- and renewables economy. Don’t let
intellectuals fool you into thinking there are no alternatives to war
— and in this case, potentially terminal war.

cyberaanval……

then the Soviet Union – and China with nuclear weapons so
extensively that it would destroy them “as viable societies.” The
war plan itself, known as Single Integrated Operational Plan 64
(SIOP-64), has not been declassified, as no SIOP has ever been
released to the public by the United States government.

However,
newly declassified documents that record the Pentagon Joint Staff’s
review of SIOP-64 were recently
 made
available
 through
George Washington University’s National Security Archive project.
The documents reveal numerous details about the still-classified plan
that shine light on the Pentagon’s willingness to wage nothing
short of total war against its adversaries at the time.

In
particular, the documents show that the plan sought to accomplish the
destruction of Russian and Chinese society by targeting and
eliminating their industrial potential while also wiping out the
majority of their urban populations. Still more troubling, urban
civilians were proposed to be the main target and
measure of the U.S. nuclear war plan as the Joint Staff sought to use
“population loss as the primary yardstick for effectiveness in
destroying the enemy society, with only collateral attention to
industrial damage.”

This
gambit to use population loss as a “primary yardstick” was
notably developed prior to the 1964 meeting detailed in the newly
released document. The meeting considered studies that had been
jointly conducted by the Joint Staff and the Joint Strategic Target
Planning Staff in order to determine how many Soviet and Chinese
cities and industrial areas needed to be wiped out in order to
destroy both countries as “viable societies.”

In
the case of the Soviet Union, it was determined that destroying 70
percent of the country’s industrial floor space, mostly urban areas
that can be used for industrial activity, would likely result in “the
destruction of the USSR as a viable society.” The plan notes that
targeting such a significant amount of the Soviet Union’s
industrial floor space would put nearby urban populations “at
risk.” Though no estimates for civilian casualties in the Soviet
Union are given in the declassified documents,
 a
1962 estimate
 projected
70 million Soviet fatalities would result from a no-warning U.S.
strike on military and urban-industrial targets.

China
– characterized then by its largely agrarian economy – posed a
challenge, given that an estimated 84 percent of the Chinese
population lived in rural areas away from urban centers, complicating
the plan to target civilian urban populations in order to destroy
China as “a viable nation.” In the case of China, the Joint Staff
ultimately settled on a plan that would destroy 30 of China’s
largest cities, with a goal of 30 percent urban fatalities, or 212
million people, and the destruction of 50 percent of industrial floor
space.

Furthermore,
the plan featured options that included both preemptive and
retaliatory bombings. The university researchers who obtained and
published the documents
 noted
that
 “preemptive”
bombings do not necessarily indicate plans for a first strike but
instead indicated that the U.S. would enact the plan if U.S.
intelligence was able to “produce warning of an impending Soviet
attack that a U.S. strike could avert or at least blunt.”

A
Mad Plan, but Very Much in Character

According
to these same researchers, the influence of then-Secretary of Defense
Robert McNamara on the SIOP-64 is clear, given that McNamara “made
the concept of ‘assured destruction’ basic to the way that top
Pentagon officials sized U.S. strategic forces.”

Furthermore,
the consideration of civilian fatalities as the “primary yardstick”
of the plan’s effectiveness also bears McNamara’s “fingerprints.”
Indeed, McNamara was an “architect” of the U.S.’ War in
Vietnam,
 including
the Gulf of Tonkin “false flag”
 that
initiated it, leading some in the press to call the conflict
“McNamara’s War.” In 1964, McNamara
 stated
that
 he
was “pleased to be identified with” the war, which killed at
least 3 million Vietnamese, a million Cambodians and Laotians and
58,000 Americans, and laid waste to Southern Vietnam through the
chemical warfare campaign that McNamara helped
 develop
and oversee
.

Aside
from Vietnam, McNamara was also
 intimately
involved
 in
the firebombing of 67 Japanese cities shortly before the end of World
War II, which destroyed 50 to 90 percent of all Japanese urban areas.
In
 a
2003 documentary
,
McNamara calmly recounted how, in a single night, “we burned to
death 100,000 Japanese civilians in Tokyo —  men, women, and
children.”

With
architect of mass-destruction McNamara serving as the head of the
Pentagon when SIOP-64 was developed, its consideration of hundreds of
millions of human lives as a “yardstick” for military
effectiveness is unsurprising. It is, however, no less chilling for
being in character, given that the some 300 million civilians that
were estimated to be killed if SIOP-64 had been enacted, dwarfs even
the vast numbers who died as a result of McNamara’s other, enacted
policies.

Unfortunately,
McNamara-esque military policies are hardly a thing of the past.
Indeed, the recent changes to
the
Nuclear Posture Review
 under
the Trump administration ended the once clear rejection of a nuclear
first strike launched by the U.S. as it states that the U.S. can use
atomic bombs in response to “significant non-nuclear strategic
attacks”, which include alleged cyberattacks. Furthermore, this
year’s National Defense Strategy
replaced the
U.S. military’s decades-long focus on the “War on Terror” with
a focus on preparing for a “great power war” against both Russia
and China, countries that are
 now
considered
 by
the Pentagon to present the “central challenges” to global U.S.
hegemony.

Though
there may be a temptation to dismiss the SOIP-64 as a relic of the
Cold War past, present circumstances should caution us to think
otherwise.

Ruchi

(CD Opinion) — Cancelling
out
 Monsanto’s
name
 and
keeping only that of Bayer, does not mean forgetting
the
 wrongdoings of
a company which, according to the
 verdict
of the Monsanto Tribunal
of
The Hague, is stained with crimes of ecocide. With Bayer’s official
takeover of
Monsanto,
the giant multinational also inherits its liabilities.

On
the eve of the start of the
integration
process
,
Monsanto
has
been held liable
 for
causing cancer through the use of its glyphosate-based weedkiller
Roundup and ordered to pay $289 million of damages to the plaintiff
Dewayne Lee Johnson in the first landmark case, settled in California
in mid August 2018. The jury also found that Monsanto “acted with
malice or oppression.”

According
to Reuters
,
the number of lawsuits brought against Bayer’s newly acquired
Monsanto is approximately 8000 in the US alone. UN experts Ms Hilal
Elver, Special Rapporteur on the
right
to food
 and
Mr. Dainius Pūras, Special Rapporteur on the
right
to physical and mental health
defined
the ruling
 “a
significant recognition of the human rights of victims, and the
responsibilities of chemical companies.”

Revelations
in reports published last year, most notably the “
Monsanto
Papers

and the “
Poison
Papers
“,
have shed light on strategies of big agrochemical groups to expand
their empires: from
lobbyinginterference
in government agencies’ proceedings
,
attacks in collusion with institutions on independent science, to
mega mergers and acquisitions. For the first time part of these
documents were shown to a jury, which were able, among other things
to also see that, “at least starting 20 years ago, Monsanto has
known that their product can cause cancer, and has gone out of its
way to ignore it and/or fight any science that suggests a link”,
as
declared
to Democracy Now by Brent Wisner
,
the lead trial counsel for Dewayne Lee Johnson in his lawsuit against
Monsanto. Added to this, in the same week, California’s Supreme
Court
rejected
a challenge
 by
Monsanto to the state’s decision to include glyphosate in its
Proposition 65 list of carcinogens.

On
other fronts,
other
lawsuits
 have
been filed in the US by farmers’groups, and
seed
sellers
 are
pushing environmental regulators to bar farmers from spraying dicamba
weed killer, key ingredient of the new Monsanto-Bayer and Basf
products, which has been causing drift-related crop injuries sweeping
across rural America in the last 2 years;
in
Europe
,
the special committee on pesticides authorization process reacted to
the US court’s decision by calling once again for a ban of
glyphosate in the continent;
in
Sri Lanka
,
where a fatal chronic kidney disease (CKDu) has been linked to
glyphosate use, a group formed by farmers’ organizations,
scientists and affected families declared that they are ready to take
Bayer/Monsanto and other glyphosate herbicide manufacturers to
the Supreme Court.

Vietnam is
also demanding compensation for victims of exposure to the
Agent
Orange
,
the chemical produced by Monsanto for the US military during the
Vietnam War. A clear signal of the fact that Monsanto’s past is set
to haunt Bayer in spite of all efforts to eliminate the brand name,
is that the week following the verdict,
Bayer’s
shares fell sharply
,
approximately by 10 – 12% (
$12.5
Billion
).
It is interesting to note that the stock exchange, the very core of
today’s globalized economy, seems to be quite unforgiving.

Navdanya,
along with civil society organizations around the world, will
continue to monitor, report and protest so that
the
agroecological
,
transition also recently discussed
 at
the FAO
‘s
Symposium on Agroecology, becomes a reality and that local, circular
and inclusive economies, nutritious and healthy food, become the norm
once again After fifty years of an intensive, unhealthy food
production model that has devastated our agriculture system by
polluting the environment, producing poisonous food and without
remotely solving the hunger problem, has instead further undermined
people’s food sovereignty. Industrial agriculture in fact can claim
only a relatively small portion of the global food production. The
majority of the food we consume is, actually, still
produced
by small and medium farmers
,
while the vast majority of crops coming from the industrial sector,
such as maize and soya, is mainly used as animal feed or to produce
biofuels.

Navdanya
International
 has
invited leading experts from around the world
 for
the drafting of the Manifesto
 “Food
for Health. Cultivating Biodiversity, Cultivating Health.” The
Manifesto, which will be widely disseminated to farmers and citizens,
governments and stakeholders, aims at highlighting the inseparable
link between food and health, developing comprehensive strategies to
overcome the model of industrial agriculture, encouraging the
convergence and action of the movement for
Agroecology and
Public Health movements to reach a common vision of sustainable
development, which must be equitable and inclusive, based on
biodiversity and
poison-free
food and farming
 systems.

The
work of Navdanya International, from the creation of the
International Commission on the Future of Food and Agriculture, and
the publication of four
Manifestos,
has focused on promoting a
new
agricultural and economic paradigm
,
and the belief that solutions to the multiple crises facing humanity
today can come from a determined shift away from the present profit
and competitive-based paradigm to a model that has at its keystone
the protection of the earth and environment and respect of the rights
and dignity of people. In biodiverse organic farming, in
Seed
Freedom
 for
farmers and citizens, in circular economies based on meaningful work,
we can find solutions to the environmental,
climatesocial
and economic
 crisis.
We will continue to reclaim citizens’ rights, as well as those of
small and medium producers, who, despite being crushed by the current
market mechanisms, are the only ones providing us with healthy and
nutritious food.

Furthermore,
we will not stop fighting this attempt of multinationals
to
takeover of our food, health and democracy
 which,
instead of being regulated by our elected representatives, are
increasingly able to take on the role of regulators through heavy
lobbying actions, thus posing a serious threat to our own democratic
system.

volgende artikel komt van ‘9 for News‘:

De
militaire hulp die de Verenigde Staten ieder jaar aan Israël bieden
is in strijd met de Amerikaanse wet en bewijst dat deze twee
bondgenoten ’s werelds grootste terreurgroeperingen zijn. Dat zegt
een Amerikaanse onderzoeker.

In
de Amerikaanse begroting is 3,8 miljard dollar per jaar uitgetrokken
voor steun aan het land. Amerikaanse senatoren proberen dat bedrag nu
stilletjes op te schroeven.

Alleen

Men

Hashima
– Brutal History and the Most Haunted Island on Earth

By

– Do
you want to see perhaps the spookiest island on earth – Hashima
(also known as Gunkanjima – the Battleship Island) – which is
located just 30 minutes by speedboat from the historic Japanese port
city of Nagasaki? Now you can. Just book online, pay the equivalent
of 40 American dollars, and then hop on one of those shiny sleek
vessels belonging to Gunkanjima Concierge or to some other company.

Do
it, and you will see the island which looks like an abandoned
monstrous wreck; like a sunken and haunted ship.

You
will sail around it. You will even be able to disembark and walk a
few hundred meters on a fenced path. Guides/minders will let you take
a few snapshots.

But
that is all. No stepping left or right off the path. No going ahead
of the group. No lagging behind. And please, no ‘provocative’
questions!

The
guides are well trained to ‘entertain you’, to tell you just how
‘haunted’ the island is and how ‘vibrant’ it used to be in
the past.

Sugary
smiles never leave their faces.

But
were you to defy their written and unwritten rules, they’d
immediately jump and appear next to you. They would even loudly scold
you. Suddenly they’d become very rude.

What
are they afraid of? What are they hiding? What really took place on
this island?

The
true horrors of the past will never be conveyed to you. It is all
about WWII, and Japan is still in denial.

A
Japanese tour guide (designated for the Japanese-speaking visitors)
as well as a carefully prepared electronic recording for the English
speakers, will recount countless details about the island’s
geography and uncontroversial chapters of history, but close to
nothing about the terror of the slave labor into which the Korean and
Chinese people were forced into, during World War II.

On
6 July 2015, The Guardian reported:

Unesco
has decided to grant world heritage status to more than 20
old industrial sites in Japan after officials from the country agreed
to acknowledge that some of them used Korean forced labourers before
and during the second world war.

The
23 Meiji period (1868-1912) sites include coalmines and shipyards
that Japan says contributed to its transformation from
feudalism into a successful modern economy.

South
Korea, however, had opposed the application for world heritage status
unless clear reference was made to the use of an estimated 60,000
labourers forced to work at seven of the sites, including the island
coalmine Gunkanjima, during Japan’s 1910-1945 colonial rule over
the Korean peninsula.”

Opposition
was also expressed by China (PRC).

The
issue of forced labor and Tokyo’s stubborn rejection to acknowledge
it, delayed the inscription of the sites by UNESCO. However, in 2015,
Japan yielded, and its delegation to UNESCO declared:

Japan
is prepared to take measures that allow an understanding that there
were a large number of Koreans and others who were brought against
their will and forced to work under harsh conditions in the 1940s at
some of the sites”.

The
sites, including the notorious Hashima/Gunkanjima, eventually gained
world heritage status. In exchange, both South Korea and China
expected Japan to highlight the suffering of their people during the
occupation and WWII. The sites where forced laborers used to be held,
were supposed to carry clearly marked and detailed explanations. But
as in so many other cases related to its dark history, Japan did
close to nothing to keep its side of the bargain. With the world
heritage status, it got what it wanted, but gave almost nothing in
return.

In
May, I spent three days in Nagasaki, visiting my friend, a leading
left-wing Australian historian, Geoffrey Gunn.

For
many years, I have been coming to this city, searching for answers to
a myriad of questions related to Japan’s and Asia’s complex past.

The
past of Nagasaki has it all: great old Japanese culture, Christians
and their prosecution, the Dutch traders and their settlement, a
vibrant Chinese minority. Nagasaki was always one of the most ‘open’
cities in Japan, by choice or by force. But also, this is where the
military ships were built, where many slave laborers were brought to
from the occupied territories, and this is also where the second
A-bomb was exploded by the US at the end of WWII.

Seen
from the roof of the imposing Nagasaki Prefectural Art Museum, the
bay of the city is still dotted with WWII ‘relics’. Near the
water, there is a huge crane, another fragment of an industrial
UNESCO world heritage site. The crane belongs to the Mitsubishi
shipyards, which have been, for long decades, producing and repairing
Japan’s military vessels.

Officially,
Japan does not have a military,” I said, sarcastically. “But
look, it is in possession of these huge battleships, docked at the
other side of the bay.”

You
are lucky. They just arrived here,” said Geoff. “These docks
played an extremely important role in the past. Gunkanjima mines also
belonged to Mitsubishi. They were excavating coal there, and then
building some of the largest battleships here, in Nagasaki.”

For
the rest of the evening we discussed the bizarre refusal of the
Japanese governments and public to acknowledge the past. Even now,
more than 70 years after the end of the war, these issues are taboo:
the genocide committed against the Chinese people, and the terrible
crimes against the Koreans.

Often,
when the past is mentioned, the famously polite Japanese people
suddenly become defensive, even aggressive.

*

In
2015, Japan began literally blackmailing UNESCO, temporarily
withdrawing its payment dues, after the United Nations Education,
Science and Culture Agency listed the 1937 Nanjing Massacre documents
in its “Memory of the World” program. The funds were eventually
released, but the message was sent, clearly and patently.

This
stubborn refusal to deal with the horrors of the past is bringing
Japan closer and closer to the deadly embrace of the West,
particularly the United States, and further and further away from
potentially friendly relations with the rest of north Asia,
particularly China.

After
WWII, the so-called Tokyo Trial supervised by the US (also known as
The International Military Tribunal for the Far East (IMTFE))
was clearly designed to punish just a few individuals, while
preserving the Japanese industrial, business and political system in
its original form, so it could serve the interests of the West. After
the trial, Japan was allowed to rebuild and to join the West in its
aggressive policy towards the Asia Pacific. It played a significant
role in the brutal Korean War, during which the West massacred
millions of Korean citizens.

Modern
Japan has no foreign policy,” I was once told by the Irish academic
and political analyst David McNeal, who is based in Tokyo. “It is
strictly following the US dictate. The same goes for the media
coverage of the international events.”

David
has no illusions about the Japanese take on its history:

They
are rewriting text books; they skip through WWII, dedicating to it
only eight pages… Nationalism is rising… There is so much
self-censorship in Japanese media, now. And the government is issuing
‘guidelines’, the so-called ‘Orange Book’, for instance: how
to treat anything that is ‘contagious’… or anything related to
history. There are instructions to writers and translators. For
instance: ‘never use words like Nanking Massacre, except when you
quote foreign experts’. Or ‘Yasukuni Shrine – never use word
“controversial” in connection to it.’ We cannot write about
‘sexual slaves’ from WWII.”

The
more ignorant about its past Japan gets, the more it seems to
strongly dislike its former victims – China and Korea. According to
a Pew Research Center poll (2017), 83% of the Japanese people have an
unfavorable view of China. Korea does not fare much better. Both
countries (PRC and ROK) are now clearly leaving Japan behind, when it
comes to the economy and in the case of South Korea, the standard of
living. The reaction of Tokyo: moving closer and closer towards the
West, while adopting an increasingly aggressive policy towards two
communist nations: China and North Korea.

*

But
back to the Battleship Island… You pay, and you get onboard. Right
from the beginning, even before the vessel departs from Nagasaki, you
get bombarded by outrageous propaganda: about that “samurai spirit”
of Japan and the entire Nagasaki area.

There
is continuous control, right from the start. You get up from your
seat, and immediately someone approaches you: Where are you going? Do
you want to change seat? No, you cannot sit here…” Guides (or
call them minders) sound extremely rude: their English is primitive,
while their obsession with all sorts of rules and regulations is
fundamentalist.

An
old dude who is here clearly in order to play the role of the main
propagandist, is continuously clarifying things into the microphone.
His voice is amplified, and his performance soon turns into an
annoying and uninterrupted flow of verbal diarrhea. There is no space
for reflection – no time to feel and to pause or let alone to ask
some serious questions.

Whenever
he stops, some cheaply-made video begins playing on the screen. Then
advertisements of Kirin Beer are beamed.

The
yacht is sailing towards the place that held thousands of people as
slave laborers, where many died, where women were turned into sexual
slaves. But the circus goes on. No reflection and no repentance.

On
the island, I refuse to follow the group. I lag behind, trying to
avoid loud noise and the herd of people. Of course, I soon get
confronted by two “guides”, trying to push me back towards the
flock.

I
ignore them, keep filming.

They
become aggressive. One shouts: “This is Japan. Follow our rules!”

I
keep filming.

I
did not come here to be loved. The reason for my journey was simple:
to determine whether the Japanese government sticks to the deal it
made with UNESCO, Korea and China – whether it marks and
commemorates the sites where forced laborers were pushed into an
inhuman existence and work, and where some of them, died.

I
found nothing of that kind: no information, no commemoration!

Back
in Nagasaki, I asked for brochures explaining the past. There were no
such brochures. The organizers of the island visits had no idea what
I was asking about.

Later,
the next day, professor Gunn took me to a small private museum
managed by local Koreans, commemorating the terror which Japan
committed against the Korean and Chinese people.

At
least this is where the truth about ‘the most haunted island’ on
Earth can be found. If one could find that tiny museum…

Gunkanjima
– a ghost island which resembles, at least from a distance, a
mighty destroyer; an island dotted with tall buildings now lacking
windows and doors. An island where thousands of miners used to go
down into deep shafts, some voluntarily, some by force. An island –
Gunkanjima – where many people used to live, and many died. A place
so mysterious and so unique, beautiful in its own way, but also both
symbolic and horrifying.

Matsui
De International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons

The
Netherlands, which hosts US nuclear weapons on its
territory, participated in the negotiation of the UN Treaty on
the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons but voted against its adoption on
7 July 2017. It was the only nation to do so
.
It claims that US
nuclear weapons are essential for its security.

Kortom

Hiroshima
Survivors Call for Nuclear Weapons Ban 73 Years After US Bombing

August

Written

Jessica

(CD— While
European and Iranian leaders
work
to salvage
 the
Iran nuclear deal after President Donald Trump
withdrew the
United States in May and
reimposed his
first round of sanctions on Monday, activists, surviviors, and
Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui marked the 73rd anniversary of the U.S.
dropping an atomic bomb on the Japanese city by calling for the total
elimination of the world’s nuclear weapons.

Today,
with more than 14,000 nuclear warheads remaining, the likelihood is
growing that what we saw in Hiroshima after the explosion that day
will return, by intent or accident, plunging people into agony,”
Matsui warned in a “
moving” peace
declaration
delivered
at a “
somber
ceremony in Japan on Monday.

Sharing
statements from
hibakusha,
or those who survived the American bombing in 1945, the mayor
continued:

The hibakusha,
based on their intimate knowledge of the terror of nuclear weapons,
are ringing an alarm against the temptation to possess them. Year by
year, as
hibakusha decrease
in number, listening to them grows ever more crucial.
One
hibakusha who
was 20 says, “If nuclear weapons are used, every living thing will
be annihilated. Our beautiful Earth will be left in ruins. World
leaders should gather in the A-bombed cities, encounter our tragedy,
and, at a minimum, set a course toward freedom from nuclear weapons.
I want human beings to become good stewards of creation capable of
abolishing nuclear weapons.”

[…]

Another hibakusha who
was 20 makes this appeal: “I hope no such tragedy ever happens
again. We must never allow ours to fade into the forgotten past. I
hope from the bottom of my heart that humanity will apply our wisdom
to making our entire Earth peaceful.” If the human family forgets
history or stops confronting it, we could again commit a terrible
error. That is precisely why we must continue talking about
Hiroshima. Efforts to eliminate nuclear weapons must continue based
on intelligent actions by leaders around the world.

Nuclear
deterrence and nuclear umbrellas flaunt the destructive power of
nuclear weapons and seek to maintain international order by
generating fear in rival countries. This approach to guaranteeing
long-term security is inherently unstable and extremely dangerous.
World leaders must have this reality etched in their hearts as they
negotiate in good faith the elimination of nuclear arsenals, which is
a legal obligation under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Furthermore (NNPT), they must strive to make the Treaty on the Prohibition
of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) a milestone along the path to a
nuclear-weapon-free world.

Matsui
also urged the Japanese government to join the
historic United
Nations
treaty
to ban nuclear weapons
,
which was adopted by dozens of nations last year and
earned
the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) a Nobel
Peace Prize. Replicas of the award and diploma
are
on display
 at
the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum until Monday, and next will be
sent to Nagasaki, the city the U.S. bombed three days later.

ICAN
turned to Twitter on Monday to share Matsui’s words and urge all
nations to join the U.N. treaty:

This Peace Declaration paints a painfully vivid image of the devastation of a nuclear bomb, but also reminds us that there is reason for hope: the provides a path to a world free of nuclear weapons, and all nations must join the Treaty → http://www.nuclearban.org  🕊

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons was adopted by 122 nations on July 7, 2017.

Paul
Kawika Martin, senior director for policy and political affairs at
the U.S.-based group Peace Action, said in a
statement,
“Besides paying respect and commemorating the lives lost in the
atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, marking the anniversaries
offers the world an opportunity to reflect on the threat still posed
by nuclear weapons, and more importantly, an opportunity to organize
for their reduction and elimination.”

As
the only country to ever use nuclear weapons in war,” Martin
continued, “and as a signatory to the Nonproliferation Treaty, the
United States has both a moral and legal obligation to negotiate in
good faith with other nuclear-armed nations for the reduction and
elimination of the world’s nuclear arsenals, including our own.
Unfortunately, the Trump administration is instead moving forward
with plans to spend $1.7 trillion adjusted for inflation on nuclear
weapons over the next three decades.”

Several
other activists and anti-nuclear organizations used social media on
Monday to remember the bombing and demand that every nation work
toward outlawing such weapons:

Right now as you read this, men like Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin threaten every city on Earth with nuclear weapons that’d make Hiroshima look like a campfire — and one day, sooner or later, these weapons will be used. Unless we eliminate all of them. Everywhere.

Stephen Schwartz

@AtomicAnalyst

At this instant 73 years ago (8:15am August 6, local time), Hiroshima was destroyed by Little Boy, a 15-kiloton atomic bomb, which killed an estimated 66,000-80,000 men, women, and children, including 12 American POWs. By the end of 1945, as many as 140,000 people were dead.

Meanwhile,
students at Fukuyama Technical High School in Japan have unveiled a
virtual reality experience that enables users to see Hiroshima on the
day of the bombing. Their hope is that the VR project will discourage
future use of nuclear weapons.

Even
without language, once you see the images, you understand,” Mei
Okada, one of the students working on the
project,
told the Associated

“That is definitely one of the merits of this VR experience.”

THE
HIROSHIMA LIE

THE
REAL REASON JAPAN SURRENDERED

WHAT
HAPPENED AFTER THE WAR

On
this day in 1945, the US military under the direction of President
Truman dropped a nuclear bomb on a civilian target killing over
80,000 people instantly.

Was
the attack on Hiroshima a military necessity?

No
and here’s why.

Two
facts:

1.
In terms of death and destruction, the Hiroshima nuclear attack
wasn’t the biggest attack on a Japanese city. The conventional
fire bombing of Tokyo killed far more.

2.
The Russians were poised to mount a massive invasion.

The
Imperial Family agreed to surrender because they were advised that
while the Japanese military might be able to hold off an American
invasion, it could not withstand a combined US and Russian attack.

By
the way, what was Japan fighting for?

To
line the pockets of the Imperial Family, the richest family in Japan.
That’s it.

They
planned the war, they ordered the war, they profited from it and they
were willing to sacrifice the civilian population to carry out their
goals.

For
example, billions of dollars worth of stolen gold and valuable art
(much of it scouted out years in advance) was shipped directly to the
Imperial compound in Tokyo. None of it has been returned.

As
a condition for surrender, the Imperial Family was allowed to remain
in power unpunished and they remain in power today.

Can
you imagine what would have happened to those murderous, thieving
bastards if the Russians had gotten to them first?

But
as always, the US government was ready to make a “deal” – in
this case to have a base to fight Communism.

After
the war, the US government also protected – and hired – veterans
of Japan’s Unit 731.

You’ve
heard of Nazi medical atrocities, but the Japanese program was
exponentially larger and its crimes were largely covered up with the
help of the US government which wanted access to the data and the
practitioners.

Aantal vermoorde Afghaanse burgerslachtoffers breekt triest record…..

Volgens

Even ter vergelijking: WOII in Nederland duurde 5 jaar en

Afghan
Civilian Deaths Hit Record High, Says UN

Jason
Ditz

July 15,2018
AfghanistanUN

Released
on Sunday, a new report from the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan
says 1,692 civilians were killed across Afghanistan in the first six
months of 2018. This is the
highest
death toll for a half year since the UN started keeping track
.

Interestingly,
the same report showed a slight decline in overall casualties among
Afghan civilians over the same period. This suggests the attacks are
deadlier but leaving fewer survivors overall.

It
is particularly noteworthy that this half year set a new
record,
as it came with a multi-day ceasefire during Eid al-Fitr* in June,
during which fighting nationwide ground to a virtual halt.

This
increase in deaths is seen as being driven at least in part by
a
 substantial
rise in suicide attacks
.
That included some very large scale attacks attributed to ISIS. The
UN found over half of the casualties from suicide attacks were from
ISIS-launched attacks, underscoring that group’s growing influence
in the country.

America
Was in the Business of Separating Families Long Before Trump

A young child of Japanese ancestry evacuates by train to internment

Children
are crying for their parents while being held in small cages. The
attorney general tells us the Bible justifies what we see and the
White House press secretary backs him up. Be horrified and angered,
but not because this is a new Trump transgression against real
American values. America was in the business of separating
families long before Trump.

I
am not talking about spurious claims that Obama did the same thing or
the valid comparisons to how our criminal justice system uses a cash
bail system that every day
rips
children
 from
their families before they or their parents have been convicted of
any crime. The true story is that the United States has a
well-documented history of breaking up non-white families.

When
we sent Japanese Americans to internment camps, families were
often
separated
 when
fathers were sent hasty relocation orders and forced labor
contracts. In some cases, family members (usually the father)
had been arrested earlier and sent to a different camp.

Forty
years later, the U.S. government
apologized,
provided reparations of $20,000 to every survivor of those internment
camps, and blamed the “
grave
wrong

on “racial prejudice, war hysteria, and a failure of political
leadership.”

Sound
familiar?

The
separating of Native American families was more intentional. America
deliberately tried to wipe native culture from our country. According
to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian,
beginning in the late 1800s, thousands of American Indian children
were forcibly sent to government-run or church-run “boarding
schools,” where they were taught English and
forbidden to
speak their native languages.

An
exhibit at the museum includes a quote from Richard Henry Pratt,
founder of the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, stating: “In
Indian civilization I am a Baptist, because I believe in immersing
the Indian in our civilization and when we get them under, holding
them there until they are thoroughly soaked.”

The
boarding schools forced children to cut their hair and give up their
traditional clothing. Their meaningful native names were
replaced with English ones. Their traditional religious practices
were forcibly replaced with Christianity. They were taught that their
cultures were inferior. Teachers sometimes ridiculed the students’
traditions. These lessons humiliated the students and taught them to
be ashamed of their heritage.

They
tell us not to speak in Navajo language. You’re going to school.
You’re supposed to only speak English,” John Brown Jr., a Navajo
who served in World War II as a code talker by using his Navajo
language for tactical communications the Japanese could not decode,
told the museum in a 2004 interview. “And it was true. They did
practice that, and we got punished if you was caught speaking
Navajo.”

And
then, of course, America enslaved Blacks for 246 years. Separating
enslaved families was done for profit, for punishment, or simply
because a seller or buyer wanted it that way in the 17th, 18th, and
19th centuries.

Destroying
families is one of the worst things done during slavery,” said
Henry Fernandez, co-founder of the
African
American Research Collaborative
 (AARC) and
a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress. “The federal
government maintained these evils through the fugitive slave laws and
other rules which defined African Americans as property with which a
slave owner could do whatever they wanted.”

Each
of these policies, Fernandez said, begins with the assumption “that
the idea of family is simply less important to people of color and
that the people involved are less than human. To justify ripping
families apart, the government must first engage in dehumanizing the
targeted group.”

The
Weeping Time” exhibit at the Smithsonian Museum of African American
History and Culture documents the
U.S.
history of separating children
 from
parents.  “Night and day, you could hear men and women
screaming … ma, pa, sister or brother … taken without any
warning,” Susan Hamilton, a witness to a slave auction, recalled in
a 1938 interview. “People was always dying from a broken heart.”

A
report in the
Maryland
State Archives
 includes
a narrative from a man named Charles Ball, who was enslaved as a
child and remembered the day he was sold away from his mother.

My
poor mother, when she saw me leaving her for the last time, ran after
me, took me down from the horse, clasped me in her arms, and wept
loudly and bitterly over me,” Ball recalled. “My master seemed to
pity her and endeavored to soothe her distress by telling her that he
would be a good master to me, and that I should not want anything.”

Ball
added that when his mother’s persisted, his master hit her with a
rawhide whip.

Thousands
of former slaves looked for lost relatives and children who had been
sold away from their families. They placed thousands of ads in
newspapers. Those ads are now being digitized in a project called
“Last Seen: Finding Family After Slavery,” which is run by
Villanova University’s graduate history program in collaboration
with
Philadelphia’s
Mother Bethel AME Church
.

Our
history of separating families is no older than our use of the Bible
to justify transgressions against humanity. In
1667,
Virginia
law
 stated
that if an enslaved person became Christian it did not mean freedom
because the only way that conversion could happen was through the
“charity and piety of their masters.” When
Texas
withdrew
 from
the union it declared that enslaving people was justified by “the
revealed will of the Almighty Creator.”
William
T. Thompson
,
the designer of the Confederate Flag said, “As a people, we are
fighting to maintain the Heaven-ordained supremacy of the white man
over the inferior or colored race.” Jeff Sessions is simply
the most recent person to try to justify an indefensible policy by
referring to the Bible.

On
June 14, Attorney General Jeff Sessions cited biblical
scripture
Romans
13
 to
claim support for the Trump administration’s forced separation of
immigrant families. “I would cite you to the Apostle Paul and his
clear and wise command in Romans 13, to obey the laws of the
government because God has ordained them for the purpose of order,”
he said.

As
it happens, this is the
same
passage
 cited
by loyalist preachers who said America should not declare
independence from England; it was cited by southerners defending
slavery; and, it was cited to defend authoritarian rule in Nazi
Germany and South African apartheid.
