SECRET WARS IN AFRICA RAGE ON, DESPITE TALK OF DOWNSIZING’. HAS MORE MILITARY OPERATIONS IN AFRICA THAN THE MIDDLE EAST’.

militairen hun werk geweldig

U.S.
SECRET WARS IN AFRICA RAGE ON, DESPITE TALK OF DOWNSIZING

(Tara Todras-Whitehill/The New York Times)

LAST
OCTOBER, FOUR
 U.S. soldiers – including two
commandos – were killed in an ambush in Niger. Since then, talk of
U.S. special operations in Africa has centered on missions being
curtailed and troop levels cut.

Press
accounts have suggested that
the
number of special operators on the front lines has been reduced
,
with the head of U.S. Special Operations forces in Africa directing
his troops to
take
fewer risks
.
At the same time, a “
sweeping
Pentagon review
”
of special ops missions on the continent may result in drastic cuts
in the number of commandos operating there. U.S. Africa Command has
apparently been asked to consider the impact on counterterrorism
operations of
cutting
the number of Green Berets, Navy SEALs, and other commandos
 by
25 percent over 18 months and 50 percent over three years.

Analysts have
already stepped forward to
question or criticize the
proposed cuts.

“Anybody
that knows me knows that I would disagree with any downsizing in
Africa,”

Donald
Bolduc, a former chief of U.S. commandos on the continent,
told
Voice of America
.

While
the review was reportedly ordered this spring and troop reductions
may be coming, there is no evidence yet of massive cuts, gradual
reductions, or any downsizing whatsoever. In fact, the number of
commandos operating on the continent has barely budged since 2017.
Nearly 10 months after the debacle in Niger, the tally of special
operators in Africa remains essentially unchanged.

According
to figures provided to The Intercept by U.S. Special Operations
Command (SOCOM), 16.5 percent of commandos overseas are deployed in Africa.
This is about the same percentage of special operators sent to
the continent in 2017 and represents a major increase over
deployments during the first decade of the post-9/11 war on terror.
In 2006, for example,
just
1 percent of all U.S. commandos deployed overseas were in
Africa
 –
fewer than in the Middle East, the Pacific, Europe, or Latin America.
By 2010, the number had risen only slightly, to 3 percent.

Today,
more U.S. commandos are deployed to Africa than to any other region
of the world except the Middle East. Back in 2006, there were only
70
special operators deployed across Africa
.
Just four years ago, there were still just 700 elite troops on the
continent. Given that an average of 8,300 commandos are deployed
overseas in any given week, according to SOCOM spokesperson Ken
McGraw, we can surmise that roughly 1,370 Green Berets, Navy SEALs,
or other elite forces are currently operating in Africa.

The
Pentagon won’t say how many commandos are still deployed in Niger,
but the total number of troops operating there is roughly the same as
in October 2017 when two Green Berets and two fellow soldiers
were
killed
by Islamic State militants
.
There are 800 Defense Department personnel currently deployed to the
West African nation, according to Maj. Sheryll Klinkel, a Pentagon
spokesperson. “I can’t give a breakdown of SOF there, but it’s
a fraction of the overall force,” she told The Intercept. There are
now also
500
American military personnel
 –
including Special Operations forces — in Somalia.  At the
beginning of last year, AFRICOM told Stars and Stripes,
there
were only 100
.

“None
of these special operations forces are intended to be
engaged
in direct combat operations
,”
said Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security
Affairs Robert S. Karem, while speaking about current troop levels in
Niger during a May Pentagon press briefing on the investigation into
the deadly October ambush. Despite this official policy, despite the
deaths in Niger, and despite the supposed curbs on special operations
in Africa, U.S. commandos there keep finding themselves in situations
that are indistinguishable from combat.

In
December, for example, Green Berets fighting alongside local forces
in Niger reportedly
killed
11 ISIS militants
 in
a firefight. And last month in Somalia, a member of the Special
Operations forces,
Staff
Sgt. Alexander Conrad, was killed
 and
four other Americans were wounded in an attack by members of the
Islamist militant group Shabaab. Conrad’s was the second death of a
U.S. special operator in Somalia in 13 months. Last May, a Navy
SEAL,
Senior
Chief Petty Officer Kyle Milliken, was killed
,
and two other American troops were wounded while carrying out a
mission there with local forces.

Between
2015 and 2017, there were also
at
least 10 previously unreported attacks
 on
American troops in West Africa, the New York Times revealed in March.
Meanwhile, Politico recently reported that, for at least five years,
Green Berets, Navy SEALs, and other commandos — operating under a
little-understood budgetary authority known as Section 127e that
funds classified programs —
have
been involved in reconnaissance and “direct action” combat
raids
 with
local forces in Cameroon, Kenya, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Niger,
Somalia, and Tunisia. Indeed, in a 2015 briefing obtained by The
Intercept, Bolduc, then the special ops chief in Africa, noted that
America’s commandos were not only conducting “surrogate” and
“combined” “counter violent extremist operations,” but also
“unilateral” missions.

While
media reports have focused on the possibility of imminent reductions,
the number of commandos deployed in Africa is nonetheless up 96
percent since 2014 and remains fundamentally unchanged since the
deadly 2017 ambush in Niger. And as the June death of Conrad in
Somalia indicates, commandos are still operating in hazardous areas.
Indeed, at the May Pentagon briefing, Gen. Thomas Waldhauser, the
chief of U.S. Africa Command, drew attention to special operators’
“high-risk missions” under “extreme conditions” in Africa.
America’s commandos, he said, “are doing
a
fantastic job across the continent
.”

THE U.S. HAS MORE MILITARY OPERATIONS IN AFRICA THAN THE MIDDLE EAST

The
deadly ambush in Niger last October that left four U.S. serviceman
dead prompted months of hand-wringing inside the Pentagon. But that
botched operation, which drew national attention to U.S.
counterterror operations throughout Africa should not have shocked
military leadership, the former commander of U.S. Special Operations
forces in Africa told VICE News.

“These
weren’t the first casualties, either. We had them in Somalia and
Kenya,” said retired Brig. Gen. Donald Bolduc, who served as
commander of Special Operations Command Africa (SOCAFRICA) from
April
2015
 to June
2017
,
in an interview with VICE News. “We had them in Tunisia. We had
them in Mali. We had them in Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Chad. But
those were kept as quiet as possible. Nobody talked about it.”

Indeed,
two separate military efforts — named Juniper Shield and Obsidian
Nomad — that were
set
to intersect but failed
 to
on the night of the deadly ambush near Tongo Tongo in Niger were part
of a pattern of expansion on the African continent that has made it
the most active U.S. military theatre in the world. The United States
has conducted more than 30 named operations and activities in Africa
over the last three years, according to documents obtained by VICE
News. While more troops are deployed to, and engaged in combat in,
the Greater Middle East, the sheer number of named efforts in Africa
actually surpasses that region.

VICE
News reviewed documents from the U.S. Army, Africa Command, and
Special Operations Command Africa, and conducted interviews with
current and former military personnel and experts familiar with
America’s “war on terror” in Africa. These documents and
testimony paint a startling picture of a sprawling, labyrinthine, and
at times chaotic shadow war on the African continent, in which
commandos are endangered by a lack of resources and “assistance”
operations blur with combat.

“Africa
has more named operations than any other theater, including CENTCOM
[the command that oversees the Middle East],” Buldoc confirmed to
VICE News. “But remains under-resourced for doing what it’s been
directed to do.”

SECRETIVE
AND SPRAWLING

In
2017, U.S. troops carried out an average of nearly 10 missions per
day —
3,500
exercises, programs, and engagements for the year
 —
across the African continent, according to Gen. Thomas Waldhauser,
the AFRICOM commander.

These
efforts — carried out in at least
33
countries
 —
range from capture-or-kill commando raids to more banal training
missions. Americans are also gathering intelligence, involved in
surveillance and reconnaissance missions carried out by drones,
engaged in construction projects, and accompanying allies on tactical
operations.

There
are also now
34
U.S. military outposts
 on
the continent, concentrated in the north and west and the Horn of
Africa, according to a recent report by The Intercept.

US operations Africa

This
March 2018 briefing authored by Africa Command Science Advisor Peter
Teil outlines current U.S. military operations throughout the African
continent. (Nick Turse for VICE News).

Through
the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), AFRICOM provided VICE News
with a list of 21 named operations conducted between January 1, 2016
and September 25, 2018. According to a separate March 2018 briefing,
authored by Africa Command Science Advisor Peter Teil and also
obtained via FOIA, eight current operations in North and West Africa
were aimed at countering the Islamic State and Boko Haram and
assisting local allies and French counterterrorism efforts. Six
operations in East Africa focused on defeating al Shabaab, assisting
the African Union Mission in Somalia, and counter-piracy. Two
theater-wide efforts focused on crisis response in the event U.S.
government personnel or facilities are threatened, while one
operation — Echo Casemate — provides support to French and U.N.
forces in the troubled Central African Republic.

A
separate Defense Department document, marked “For Official Use
Only,” that appears to have been posted online inadvertently, lists
12 named activities not on AFRICOM’s list, including eight in the
east and another four in the northwest.

Taken
together, these documents represent the most current and complete
record of named U.S. operations and activities recently conducted on
the continent, offering a window into a collection of
little-understood, often overlapping, military efforts unknown to
most Americans.

SPREAD
THIN, AND BLURRING LINES

Somalia (AMISOM) and Somali national security forces in
counterterrorism operations, and have conducted frequent raids and
drone strikes on Al-Shabaab training camps throughout Somalia.
(MOHAMED ABDIWAHAB/AFP/Getty Images).

The
proliferation of so many concurrent counterterrorism efforts courts
danger, said Bill (William) Hartung, the director of the Arms and Security
Project at the Center for International Policy (ASPCIP).

“Running
so many operations with combat implications without making them known
to the American public is both unwise and ultimately undemocratic. It
is no way to run foreign policy in a democracy,” he said. “And
running sensitive operations that are secret, or simply not widely
publicized, increases the risks of failure, because they are not
subject to public debate or adequate scrutiny.”

Bolduc
also criticized the lack of transparency on the part of AFRICOM.
“What we’re doing shouldn’t be a mystery,” he said.

Alice
Hunt Friend, the principal director for African affairs in the Office
of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy from 2012 to 2014, said
the risks are compounded by the way these operations tend to blur
between “assistance” and combat.

“If
the primary military activity in a country is assistance, then as we
saw in Niger, U.S. combat-related resources are not readily on hand,”
Friend explained.

Among
the operations that provide “assistance” are the classified 127e
programs. These secretive efforts are “aimed at assisting foreign
forces who support U.S. counterterrorism operations,” said Friend.

But
these activities often consist of far more than assistance, said
Bolduc. Classified 127e programs are “direct action” efforts,
which are defined by the Pentagon as “short-duration strikes and
other small-scale offensive actions conducted as a special operation
in hostile, denied, or diplomatically sensitive environments.”

Such
direct-action missions were carried out in Cameroon, Kenya, Libya,
Mali, Niger, Somalia, and Tunisia in recent years, as well as two
nations where the 127e programs have now ended, Ethiopia and
Mauritania, said Bolduc.

US operations Africa

Through
the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), AFRICOM provided VICE News
with a list of 21 named operations conducted between January 1, 2016
and September 25, 2018. Above is the list. (Nick Turse for VICE
News.)

The
Department of Defense declined to provide details about these
activities because many were “ongoing,” said Navy Commander
Candice Tresch, a Pentagon spokesperson.

“We
are extremely lucky that there have not been more situations like
Niger,” said Hartung. “Running dozens of missions where U.S.
troops are liable to be thrust into combat roles is an extremely
risky approach, putting both their lives and our interests at risk.”

Buldoc
expressed particular concern over what he explained was a persistent
lack of support from the Pentagon. “When I left command, I had 96
missions and 886 tasks associated with those missions in 28 different
countries, in an area that was two and a half times the size of the
United States,” Bolduc said. “I was under-resourced in personnel
recovery. I was under-resourced in ISR [intelligence, surveillance,
and reconnaissance assets]. And I was under resourced in medical
support — the three key things that I needed.”

For
years, the special operations community and its
supporters have
expressed concern over
deployment
rates,
operations
tempo, and the amount of resources being allocated to direct action
missions. “Most SOF units are employed to their sustainable
limit,”
General
Raymond Thomas
(III), the Special Operations Command chief, told members of Congress last
spring.

In
June, the New York Times reported that Secretary of Defense James
Mattis and Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr., the chairman of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff, had grown concerned that commandos across the globe
were
spread
too thin
.
And the resources afforded to the team ambushed in Niger in 2017, for
example — who relied on contracted medical evacuation services,
French airpower, and lightly armored vehicles — have been
criticized as inadequate and dangerous.

Bolduc,
the former SOCAFRICA commander, laid much of the blame of the Niger
ambush on such deficits and a failure to adequately support local
allies. “That lack of resources — as well as fundamentally
misunderstanding the environment, the situation, and the threat —
meant that we were unable to help our partners solve a regional
problem. Because we didn’t provide an adequate military and
security response, the threat got stronger and more effective. The
direct result was the ambush of our SOF team in October 2017.”

Africa
Command’s official investigation, however, concluded that the “direct
cause of the enemy attack in Tongo Tongo is that the enemy achieved
tactical surprise there, and our forces were outnumbered
approximately three to one,” according to AFRICOM’s former chief
of staff, and now the head of the U.S. Army in Africa, Maj. Gen.
Roger Cloutier.

DRAWING
DOWN — SORT OF

The
Pentagon told VICE News that the total number of troops assigned to
AFRICOM — about 7,200 personnel — would be cut by less than 10
percent over several years, as it reviews its priority areas on the
continent and reorients itself toward great power rivals.

There
are, by comparison, roughly
24,000
troops
 deployed
to Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria, although President Trump recently
suggested that U.S. troops might be
withdrawn from
the Middle East due to lower oil prices.

Corps Commandant Gen. Robert Neller, speaks during a briefing with

Washington, Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2018. (AP Photo/Manuel Balce Ceneta)

Pentagon
spokesperson Tresch said that the ambush in Niger had nothing to do
with the Defense Department’s decision to modestly decrease troop
levels in Africa. She said the move is predicated on the
 National
Defense Strategy
,
released earlier this year, which calls for increased focus on
near-peer competitors. The Trump administration is reportedly poised
to unveil a broader
strategy
for Africa
 specifically
focused on countering the influence of Russia and China on the
continent.

“As
we prioritize where we need to place concentrations of troops, there
were certain specialties — especially in the Special Operations
arena — that we didn’t necessarily need employed in Africa,”
AFRICOM’s Senior Enlisted Leader Chief Master Sergeant
 Ramon
Colon-Lopez
 told
VICE News.

Few,
if any, troops will be cut from hotspots like Libya and Somalia, nor
Djibouti, whose bases also play a pivotal role in U.S. operations in
Yemen and the greater Middle East. Nor will any region of the
continent see all U.S. forces removed. Troop drawdowns in West Africa
will be marked by a shift from tactical-level support to a greater
emphasis on advising, training and intelligence-sharing, the Pentagon
said.

Bolduc,
who supports robust military and diplomatic engagement on the
continent, warned that any significant cuts to special operations
forces would irreparably harm U.S. interests in Africa.

“We’re
becoming risk averse and it’s slowing down the amount of support we
provide to our partner nations in training, advising, assisting, and
accompanying them,” he said. “We’re basically ceding our
strategic leverage and relationship with our African partners to the
Chinese and the Russians.”

But
Friend said there was greater risk in small teams of special
operators conducting far flung and secretive missions on the
continent.

“The
fact that American forces were out in the field like that made them
vulnerable to [ISIS in the Greater Sahara] attacks. If they’re not
forward and not out there, it’s much harder to attack them,” she
said. “So, one of the choices in front of DoD decision-makers is
‘do we want to keep forces forward?’ and therefore ‘what kind
of support do we need to give them?,’” Friend said.

powder “was sometimes tainted with carcinogenic asbestos,”
but concealed the information from regulators and the public.

Asbestos,
“the name given to six minerals that occur naturally in the
environment as bundles of fibers,” has been used in North
America’s automotive, construction, and shipbuilding industries since
the late 1800s,
according
to
 the
National Cancer Institute. The World Health Organization
(WHO)
 warns that
“all types of asbestos cause lung cancer, mesothelioma, cancer
of the larynx and ovary, and asbestosis (fibrosis of the lungs).”

Because
asbestos sometimes occurs in the earth along with
talc,
contamination is
possible.
Reuters—along
with attorneys for more than 11,000 plaintiffs currently suing
Johnson & Johnson, claiming the company’s products caused their
cancer—examined memos, internal reports, and other confidential
documents as well as deposition and trial testimony.

That mountain of evidence, according to Reuters, revealed that from at least 1971 to the early 2000s, the company’s raw talc and finished powders sometimes tested positive for small amounts of asbestos, and that company executives, mine managers, scientists, doctors, and lawyers fretted over the problem and how to address it while failing to disclose it to regulators or the public.

The
documents also depict successful efforts to influence U.S.
regulators’ plans to limit asbestos in cosmetic talc products
and
scientific
research
 on
the health effects of talc.

While,
over the past two decades, some legal challenges claiming that
Johnson & Johnson products were tainted with asbestos and caused
cancer have been unsuccessful, three recent developments seem to
signal a shift. A pair of cases in New Jersey and California saw
significant awards for mesothelioma patients, and a “watershed”
verdict in St. Louis expanded the company’s potential liability.

Outlining
the St. Louis case,
Reuters explained:

The
22 plaintiffs were the first to succeed with a claim that
asbestos-tainted Baby Powder and Shower to Shower talc, a longtime
brand the company sold in 2012, caused ovarian cancer, which is much
more common than mesothelioma. The jury awarded them $4.69 billion in
damages. Most of the talc cases have been brought by women with
ovarian cancer who say they regularly used J&J talc products as a
perineal antiperspirant and deodorant.

“When
people really understand what’s going on,” said Mark Lanier, an
attorney for one of the plaintiffs, “I think it increases J&J’s
exposure a thousand-fold.”

Johnson
& Johnson, as
Reuters noted,
“has dominated the talc powder market for more than 100 years,
its sales outpacing those of all competitors combined… And while
talc products contributed just $420 million to J&J’s $76.5
billion in revenue last year, Baby Powder is considered an essential
facet of the healthcare-products maker’s carefully tended image as a
caring company—a ‘sacred cow,’ as one 2003 internal email put it.”

Another
attorney who’s not tied to the cases against Johnson &
Johnson
concluded
on Twitter
 that
the 1970s memos mentioned in
Reuters‘

An army of social media trolls are at the ready to denounce legitimate criticism of Israel’s occupation and settlement enterprise

Israel was created through violence and terror, which it continues to heap on Palestinians to this day, as it works to fulfill the dream of Zionism – a Jewish state from the river to the sea.

How, then, does it continue to portray itself as the victim, while painting the actual victims – Palestinians – as the aggressors?

It has become a tired and broken record, one that Israel and its ardent supporters play, regardless of the rationality of their arguments. Any criticism of Israel, or any peaceful act to put pressure on the state, draws the same outrage, expressed through carefully thought out, yet irrational, talking points.

Total impunity

Anyone, or any organisation, who dares to criticise the self-proclaimed “only democracy in the Middle East” is accused of being motivated by anti-semitism. Any critical act or protest aimed at pressing Israel to uphold international law, no matter how peaceful, is denounced.

Israel’s treatment with kid gloves is not new; what is new, however, is its launching of the bullying trigger button within seconds of an attack.

While access to the nuclear button is normally reserved for the head of state, any pro-Israel civilian can launch the bullying trigger button, and they are encouraged to do so by Israel. An army of social media trolls linked to Israeli missions abroad have their fingers hovering over this button, ready to defend as soon as they perceive an attack. It’s a button they have pressed repeatedly in recent days.

Take the case of Airbnb. The holiday property listings company enraged the bullying army by withdrawing listings for properties built in illegal Israeli settlements from its website. Pro-Israel critics claimed that Airbnb was singling out Jewish Israeli properties, and therefore, this was anti-semitic.

Breaking international law

The reality is that the settlement enterprise itself is racist, because homes are only built for Jewish Israelis. Imagine the outcry if Britain built homes only for white Christians, banning other inhabitants of Britain from acquiring them. Settlements are also illegal under international law.

Airbnb said it took action because settlements were at the “core of the dispute between Israelis and Palestinians”.

A statement from the company noted: “US law permits companies like Airbnb to engage in business in these territories. At the same time, many in the global community have stated that companies should not do business here because they believe companies should not profit on lands where people have been displaced.”

A reasonable person would see clear logic in that stance. However, the bullying trigger button was pressed, and an illegal settler is now bringing a lawsuit against Airbnb. Consider that for a moment: an illegal settler is suing a company for a moral and legal act.

It was then the turn of British Quakers to enrage the pro-Israel lobby. Their crime? Divesting from companies that profit from Israel’s illegal occupation. Paul Parker, recording clerk for Quakers in Britain, said in a statement: “With the occupation now in its 51st year, and with no end in near sight, we believe we have a moral duty to state publicly that we will not invest in any company profiting from the occupation.”

More pressure needed

This time, it was the Board of Deputies of British Jews that pressed the bullying trigger button. In a statement, the board’s president, Marie van der Zyl, condemned the decision: “The appalling decision of the Friends House hierarchy to divest from just one country in the world – the only Jewish state – despite everything else going on around the globe, shows the dangers of the obsessive and tunnel-visioned approach that a narrow clique of church officials have taken in recent years.”

Any reasonable person who knows the Quakers would realise that they would have reflected seriously before making such a decision, and that it was based on their deep knowledge of the situation over decades. Divesting from companies that profit from an illegal occupation is moral and legal.

Israel does not recognise that the West Bank and East Jerusalem are occupied. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has deemed it absurd to talk of an occupation, and the long-advertised US “deal of the century” will likely reflect this by avoiding a call to end the occupation.

This will certainly not lead to peace. What is needed is more pressure on Israel to comply with international law and to finally end the occupation of Palestinian land. Airbnb was correct to identify the settlements as a core issue, and it is time that others follow suit.

Whither free speech?

The bullying trigger button will now be pressed regularly, judging by the number of moves to ban trade with illegal Israeli settlements.

Chile’s congress overwhelmingly passed a resolution demanding that the government “forbid the entry of products manufactured and coming from Israeli colonies in the occupied Palestinian territory”. This follows hot on the heels of Ireland’s senate passing a bill banning the import of products from illegal Israeli settlements.

The vicious attack on CNN contributor Marc Lamont Hill, fired for standing with Palestinians, shows that Israel is being singled out not for criticism, but rather for protection from accountability.

Free speech, it seems, is a value that most claim to uphold – except those who blindly support Israel. Speak if you want to, they say, but the price will be high. The bullying trigger button can be pressed by anyone in defence of Israeli apartheid.

These
100 Companies Cause 71% Of Emissions. Demand Immediate Changes Before
It’s Too Late!

Per
the bombshell
Carbon
Majors Report
,
prepared by the environmental non-profit CDP and the Climate
Accountability Institute,
a
staggering 71 percent of all carbon emissions since 1988 can be
traced back to only 100 corporations, most of which are fossil fuels
producers.
 Even
more alarming, half of all global industrial emissions can be traced
to just 25 corporate and state-owned entities.

Lees en teken de petitie ajb!

If
emissions continue at the same rate for the next 28 years as they
have for the last 28 years, global average temperatures would rise by
4 degrees Celsius by the end of the century, resulting in
catastrophic consequences for civilization,
including:

  • the
    inundation of coastal cities;

  • increasing
risks for food production potentially leading to
    higher
    malnutrition rates;
    many dry regions becoming dryer and wet regions wetter;

  • unprecedented
    heat
    waves in
    many regions, especially in the tropics;

  • substantially
    exacerbated water scarcity in many regions;

  • increased
    frequency of high-intensity tropical cyclones;

  • irreversible
    loss of
    biodiversity,
    including coral reef systems.

These
100 companies, of which ExxonMobil, BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips,
Hess, Murray

Coal,
and Chesapeake Energy Corp are a part, are a clear and present danger
to civilization, and
action
must be taken at once to ensure that average global temperatures do
not pass the point of no return.

Lees en teken de petitie ajb!

Our
top priority – not just as Democrats or Republicans, or even
Americans, but humans – should be to transition to 100 percent
clean, renewable energy, to end our use of fossil fuels, to curb meat
consumption, to protect and expand forests, and to eliminate our
carbon footprint. Of course, even all of those actions will be
useless if the corporations responsible for the vast majority of such
dangerous emissions do not act now.

Lees en teken de petitie ajb!

We,
the undersigned, demand that immediate action be taken. The future of
this planet depends on it and time is quickly running out.

Scores
of Iraqis are dying because they cannot afford prescription medicines
which are being kept high,
Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported
yesterday.

According
to the news site, prices are being kept high by people who have links
to executives in the Iraqi government and control the medicine
market. This has left the Ministry of Health unable to make urgent
medicines affordable such as those for cancer, kidney, heart and
nerve diseases.

Most
of the firms producing medicines in Iraq are connected to
politicians, government officials or other executives in the country
who protect them when they raise prices, Al-Araby
Al-Jadeed
said, noting that some of the medicines, which
used to be offered to patients for free, are being sold for $200.

Speaking
anonymously to the London-based news website, an official in the
Iraqi Ministry of Health said that prices of some of the medicines
are being multiplied three times.

“Citizens
are obliged to buy the medicines because there are no alternatives at
hospitals,” the official said.

He
added: “There are pharmaceutical companies considered the mafia …
as they control the pharmaceutical sector, prevent the resumption of
work in factories which produce the medicines and put pressure on the
Ministry of Health in order to prevent imports of certain medicines
by the government.”

Mario Verbeek (plaatsvervangend commandant Luchtstrijdkrachten) over helikopterincident in Mali

How
Plutocratic Media Keeps Staff Aligned With Establishment Agendas

Why
do mainstream media reporters within ostensibly free democracies act
just like state media propagandists? Why are they so reliably
pro-establishment, all throughout every mainstream outlet? Why do
they so consistently marginalize any idea that doesn’t fit within
the extremely narrow Overton window of acceptable opinion? Why does
anyone who inconveniences western establishment power always find
themselves on the losing end of a trial by media? Why are they so
dependably adversarial toward anything that could be perceived as a
flaw in any nation outside the US-centralized power alliance, and so
dependably forgiving of the flaws of the nations within it?

The
way I see it there are only two possible explanations for the
unanimous consensus in mass media on these issues:

Explanation
1:
 The
consensus exists because the mass media reporters are all telling the
truth all the time.

OR

Explanation
2:
 The
consensus exists because there is some kind of system in place which
keeps all mass media reporters lying to us and painting a false
picture about what’s going on in the world.

Those
are the only two possibilities, and only one can be true, since any
mixture of the two would result in the loss of consensus.

Most
mainstream westerners harbor an unquestioned assumption that
Explanation 1 is the only possibility. The things they see on CNN,
the BBC and the ABC are all accurate descriptions of what’s really
going on in the world, and the consensus in their descriptions exists
because they’re all describing the same objective reality.

But
what would that mean exactly? Well, for starters if the mainstream
media reporters are telling us the truth all the time it would mean
that the same power institutions which slaughtered millions in
Vietnam and Iraq for no good reason are actually virtuous and honest.
It would mean the positive, uncritical picture that is consistently
painted of those same institutions which
wage
nonstop campaigns of bloodshed
 and
oppression to ensure the profit of economic manipulators and war
profiteers is due to those institutions possessing merits which are
overall so positive that no criticism of them is needed. It would
mean that the status quo of climate destruction, steadily growing
wealth inequality, an increasingly Orwellian surveillance system, an
increasingly militarized police force, increasing internet
censorship, and crushing neoliberal austerity measures are all things
people voted for using the excellent democratic political system the
mainstream media defends, based on the accurate information the
mainstream media gave them about what’s in their best interests.

Explanation
1 sounds improbable in that light. We know that the system is
spectacularly screwed up, and we know that the political
establishment which these mainstream outlets always defend does
unforgivably evil things, so we should expect to see a lot more
critical reporting and a lot less protecting of the status quo. But
we don’t. We see war crimes ignored, oppression justified, the
two-headed one-party system normalized, dissident narratives smeared
as fake news conspiracy theories, and unproven assertions by
government agencies with a known history of lying reported as
unquestionable fact.

But
that leaves only Explanation 2. How could that be right?

This
part
 of
a
1996
interview
 between
Noam Chomsky and the BBC’s Andrew Marr describes a foundational
element of Explanation 2: that there is a system in place which
ensures that all the reporters in positions of influence are there
not to report factually on the news of the day, but to sell a
particular narrative that is friendly to the state and the status
quo.  Chomsky describes a “filtering system” which ensures
that only those loyal to power rise to the top within the
plutocrat-owned media, to which Marr objects and insists that his
peers are brave truth-tellers who hold power to account.
Subsequently, the following exchange takes place:

”Chomsky:
Well, I know some of the best, and best known investigative reporters
in the United States, I won’t mention names, whose attitude towards
the media is much more cynical than mine. In fact, they regard the
media as a sham. And they know, and they consciously talk about how
they try to play it like a violin. If they see a little opening,
they’ll try to squeeze something in that ordinarily wouldn’t make
it through. And it’s perfectly true that the majority – I’m
sure you’re speaking for the majority of journalists who are
trained, have it driven into their heads, that this is a crusading
profession, adversarial, we stand up against power. A very
self-serving view. On the other hand, in my opinion, I hate to make a
value judgement but, the better journalists and in fact the ones who
are often regarded as the best journalists have quite a different
picture. And I think a very realistic one.

Marr:
How can you know that I’m self-censoring? How can you know that
journalists are..

Chomsky:
I’m not saying your self censoring. I’m sure you believe
everything you’re saying. But what I’m saying is that if you
believed something different, you wouldn’t be sitting where you’re
sitting”.

“If
you believed something different, you wouldn’t be sitting where
you’re sitting.”

It
is an obvious fact that mainstream media outlets
are
owned by the extremely wealthy
,
as has been the case for a very long time. Owning media is in and of
itself a profitable investment, “like having a license to print
your own money” as Canadian television magnate Roy Thomson
once
put it
.
So when it comes to the news media outlets which form people’s
perceptions of the world, what incentive would a powerful plutocrat
have to platform anti-establishment voices on those outlets and help
sow ideas which upset the status quo upon which said plutocrat has
built his empire? It certainly wouldn’t make him any more money,
and if anti-establishment ideas like socialism, anarchism,
non-interventionism or skepticism of government agencies gained
popular footing in public consciousness, it could upset the
foundation of the plutocrat’s dynasty and cause him to lose
everything.

Plutocrats
have put a lot of energy into influencing government policy in order
to create legislation which ensures the continued growth of their
wealth and power. A whole lot of maneuvering has had to happen over
the course of many years to create a political system wherein
government bribery is legal in the form of campaign finance and
corporate lobbying, wherein deregulation of corporations is the norm,
wherein tax loopholes are abundant and tax burdens are shifted to the
middle class, wherein money hemorrhages upward to the wealthiest of
the wealthy while ordinary people grow poorer and poorer. What
incentive would these powerful oligarchs have to risk upsetting that
delicate balancing act by helping to circulate ideas which challenge
the very governmental system they’ve worked so hard to manipulate
to their extreme advantage? And how many incentives would they have
to keep everyone supporting the status quo?

How
hard would it be to simply decline to give anti-establishment voices
a platform, and platform establishment loyalists instead? How easy
would it be for a wealthy media owner or influential investor to
ensure that only establishment loyalists are given the job of hiring
and promoting editors and reporters in a mainstream media outlet?

Every blue-checkmark MSM journo on Twitter is auditioning for a job. All they’re actually tweeting is “Look at me, current or future employer! I will smear Julian Assange! I will help sell the Russia narrative! I’ll say Corbyn is an antisemite!” And the MSM bosses pay attention.

If
you’ve ever wondered what motivates all those blue-checkmarked
corporate media journalists to spend so much time on Twitter
defending the powerful and attacking the disempowered, this is your
answer. They spend their own free time smearing Jill Stein, calling
Jeremy Corbyn an antisemite, attacking Julian Assange, supporting
longtime neoconservative war agendas against Russia, Syria and Iran
and uncritically reporting intelligence agency assertions as fact not
because there’s a CIA officer hovering over their shoulder at all
times telling them exactly what to tweet, but because they’re
auditioning for a job. They’re creating a public record of their
establishment loyalism which current and future employers will look
at when weighing hiring and promotion decisions, which is why both
journalism schools and journalism employers
now
encourage journalists to cultivate a social media presence
 to
“build their brand”, i.e. their public resume.

So
it’s very easy to fill mass media jobs with minds which are not
predisposed toward rocking the boat. A pro-establishment consensus is
artificially built, and now you’ve got an environment where someone
who stands up and says “Uh, hey, so we still haven’t seen any
actual hard evidence that Russia interfered in the US election in any
meaningful way” or whatever is instantly greeted by a wall of
shunning and shaming (observe
Aaron
Maté
‘s
interactions with other journalists on social media for a good
example of this), which can be psychologically difficult to deal
with.

Caitlin Johnstone ⏳@caitoz

Every blue-checkmark MSM journo on Twitter is auditioning for a job. All they’re actually tweeting is “Look at me, current or future employer! I will smear Julian Assange! I will help sell the Russia narrative! I’ll say Corbyn is an antisemite!” And the MSM bosses pay attention.

12:53 AM – Dec 10, 2018

Anyone
who’s ever gone to high school can understand how powerful the
social pressures to seek peer approval and fit in can be, and anyone
who’s ever worked a normal job anywhere can understand the natural
incentives that are in place to behave in a way that is pleasing to
one’s bosses. In any job with any kind of hierarchy, you quickly
learn the written rules, and you pay close attention to social cues
to learn the unwritten ones as well. You do this in order to learn
how to avoid getting in trouble and how to win the approval of your
superiors, to learn which sorts of behaviors can lead to raises and
promotions, and which behaviors will lead to a career dead-end. You
learn what will earn you a pat on the back from a leader, which can
be extremely egoically gratifying and incentivizing in and of itself.

It
works exactly the same way in news media. Reporters might not always
be consciously aware of all the pro-establishment guidelines they’re
expected to follow in order to advance their careers, but they know
how the reporters who’ve ascended to the top of the media ladder
conduct themselves, and they see how the journalists who win the
accolades behave. With the help of editors and peers you quickly
learn where all the third rails and sacred cows are, and when to shut
your mouth about the elephant in the room. And for those rare times
that all these filtration devices fail to adequately filter out
dissident ideas, you see the example that gets made of those few who
slip between the cracks, like CNN contributor Marc Lamont Hill for
his
defense
of Palestinian human rights
 or
Phil Donahue for his
opposition
to the Iraq invasion
.

So
plutocrats own the mass media and platform status quo-friendly
voices, which creates an environment full of peer pressure to conform
and workplace pressure to advance establishment-friendly narratives.
Add to this the phenomenon of
access
journalism
,
wherein journalists are incentivized to cozy up to power and pitch
softball questions to officials in order to gain access to them, and
things get even more slanted. It’s easy to understand how all this
can create an environment of consensus which has nothing to do with
facts or reality, but rather with what narratives favor the
US-centralized empire and the plutocrats who control it. But all
those dynamics aren’t the only factors going into making sure a
consensus worldview is maintained. Remember that hypothetical CIA
officer I mentioned earlier who isn’t actively leaning over every
journalist’s shoulder and dictating what they tweet? Well, just
because he’s not dictating every word produced by the mass media
machine doesn’t mean he’s not involved.

Secretive
and unaccountable government agencies have an extensive and
well-documented record of involving themselves with news media
outlets. It is a known and undisputed fact that the Central
Intelligence Agency has been
intimately
involved in America’s news media since the 1950s
,
and it remains so to this day. In 2014 it was a scandal when reporter
Ken Dilanian was caught
collaborating
with the CIA
in
his publications, but now veterans of the US intelligence community
like John Brennan and James Clapper
openly
fill out the line-up
 of
talking heads on MSNBC and CNN. Just recently the
Guardian published
a lie-filled smear piece on Julian Assange which
was
almost certainly the result
of
the outlet’s collaboration with one or more intelligence and/or
defense agencies, and when that article caused an outcry it was
defended as the likely result of Russian disinformation in an
evidence-free article by a CIA veteran who was permitted to publish
anonymously in
Politico.
The
Washington
Post
 is
solely owned by Jeff Bezos,
who
is a CIA contractor
,
and who we may be certain did not purchase the Post under the
illusion that newspapers were about to make a lucrative comeback.
Secretive government agencies are deeply involved in the workings of
western news media, in many ways we know about, and in far more ways
we don’t know about.

Taking
all of these factors into consideration and revisiting Explanation 1
and Explanation 2 from the beginning of this article, it should be
obvious to you that the most logical explanation for the uniform
consensus of support for pro-establishment narratives in the mass
media exists because there is indeed a system in place which keeps
all mass media reporters lying to us and painting a false picture
about what’s going on in the world.

This
doesn’t mean that these news media outlets lie about everything all
the time, it means they mostly provide half-truths, distortions and
lies by omission whenever it benefits the agendas of the powerful,
which is functionally the same as lying all the time. I sometimes get
people telling me “Caitlin! The MSM lies
all
the time
,
and they say global warming is real! That means it’s false!” But
it doesn’t work that way; if the TV tells you a celebrity has died
then it’s probably true, and if they say it’s about to rain you
should probably roll up your car windows. If they lied about
everything all the time they would instantly lose all credibility,
and their ability to propagandize effectively would be lost. Instead,
they advance evidence-free narratives asserted by opaque government
agencies, they avoid highlighting inconvenient truths, they ignore
third parties and dissident ideas except to dismiss them, they
harshly criticize the misdeeds of governments which oppose the
US-centralized empire while sweeping the misdeeds of imperial members
under the rug, and when there’s an opportunity to sabotage peace or
support war, they seize it. They distort only when they have to, and
only as much as they need to.

In
this way the powerful have succeeded in controlling the people’s
narratives about what’s happening in their country and their world.
This is the system of narrative manipulation we are up against when
we try to sow dissident ideas into public consciousness, and as the
old adage goes, it is easier to fool people than to convince them
that they have been fooled.

And
yet we are gaining ground. The manipulators have been losing control
of the narrative, which is why the mass media have been
acting
so weird and desperate since 2016
.
The unelected power establishment failed to manufacture support for
its would-be Syria invasion, it
failed
to get the public
to
buy into the Russia hysteria, trust in the mass media is at
an
all-time
low
,
and it’s
continuing
to plummet
.
More and more people are waking up to the fact that they are being
lied to, which is good, because the only thing keeping them from
pushing for real change is the fact that there are all these screens
in everyone’s lives telling them that real change isn’t needed.

The
liars are against the ropes, and they’re starting to look winded.
A
populist
information revolution
is
looking more winnable than ever.

PENTAGON
ACCIDENTALLY REFUELED SAUDI JETS OVER YEMEN FOR FREE

United
States (
Sputnik)
–
Amid
a push by the Senate to vote on ending US support for the Saudi-led
coalition waging war in Yemen this week, a new report indicates that
American tankers have been refueling Saudi coalition jets with gas
paid for by US taxpayers because of “errors in accounting.”

Millions
of dollars have likely been drained from US coffers
to support the Saudi-campaign, according to the report.

Though
Washington “believed” Riyadh and the United Arab Emirates “had
been charged for the fuel and refueling services, they in fact
had not been charged adequately,” wrote William S. Castle,
principal deputy general counsel at the Office of the
Secretary of Defense, in a November 27 letter obtained
by The Atlantic.

In
the letter, one of the Pentagon’s top attorneys acknowledges
that free refueling services for the Saudi coalition cost more
money than he could calculate. While one might think that
someone at the 3 million-person organization that is the
Pentagon would know exactly how much the US is owed, Castle said
in the letter that the department is “currently calculating
the correct charges.” The Pentagon reached its conclusion
following an inquiry sent by Senator Jack Reed, a Democrat
from Rhode Island who sits as the second most powerful
member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Tens
of millions of dollars is probably a decent estimate of how
much US taxpayers have contributed to the Saudi campaign,
according to The Atlantic.

A
spokesperson from the Pentagon confirmed the letter’s contents
and its authenticity to the publication late last week.

“Although
DoD has received some reimbursement for inflight refueling
assistance provided to the Saudi-led coalition (SLC), US Central
Command recently reviewed its records and found errors in accounting
where DoD failed to charge the SLC adequately for fuel and
refueling services,” said Commander Rebecca Rebarich, speaking
to The Atlantic.

A
spokesperson for CENTCOM specifically said the command was
“still working through the calculation” of how much the
Saudi coalition has paid for the refueling services and jet
fuel.

In
other military finance news, the Pentagon failed its first-ever audit
last month, as accountants found myriad discrepancies in the
department’s books that may take years to reconcile. “
We
failed the audit, but we never expected to pass it
,”
said Deputy Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan.
