Jeremy Corbyn suspended even as report vindicates

Pushback

The UK Labour
Party has suspended former leader Jeremy Corbyn, even as a new report
underscores that anti-Semitism allegations were a smear campaign
against him. Former Labour MP Chris Williamson responds.

Former UK
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has been suspended by his successor,
neoliberal Blairite Keir Starmer, even as a new report confirms that
claims of a Labour “anti-Semitism crisis” under Corbyn’s watch
were without merit. Former UK Labour MP Chris Williamson, a Corbyn
ally who has denounced the anti-Semitism allegations as a smear
campaign, discusses the report and the Blairite wing’s ongoing war
on the Corbyn movement.

Corbyn
as much a racist as Nelson Mandela,’ former ANC MP Andrew Feinstein
tells online rally

– JEREMY CORBYN “is as much a racist or anti-semite as my former
boss Nelson Mandela” and must be restored to membership of the
Labour Party, former South African MP Andrew Feinstein told a rally
in defence of the ex-Labour leader on Sunday night.

Mr Feinstein, the son
of a Holocaust survivor who lost 39 relatives in the Nazi camps of
Auschwitz and Theresienstadt, stressed that the Labour left must have
“zero tolerance” for anti-semitism.

But he denounced “an
attempt by the mainstream media and the Labour Party leadership to
wish away left-wing Jews” who supported Mr Corbyn, “to behave as
if we do not exist … an attempt to do away with an extraordinary
tradition of Jewish socialism and support for liberation movements
from Pretoria to Palestine.”

The former MP spoke at
a Defend Jeremy Corbyn, Fight Racism, Build Socialism rally called by
the Radical Alliance, a group of Labour and non-Labour socialists,
alongside MPs including John McDonnell and Ian Lavery, trade
unionists and socialist and anti-racist campaigners and activists.

Unison assistant
general secretary Roger McKenzie, speaking in a personal capacity,
said that he would not walk away from his friend Mr Corbyn, having
“stood side by side with him on picket lines and at anti-racist
demonstrations. This is someone who hasn’t flinched from the
anti-racist struggle in the 30-plus years I’ve known him.”

Unite’s Howard
Beckett said that Britain could have a Labour government now,
potentially avoiding the Tories’ disastrous mishandling of the
coronavirus pandemic, had Mr Corbyn not been undermined by Labour MPs
and staff and by “a shadow cabinet, Keir Starmer foremost among
them, who betrayed our class over Brexit and allowed it to divide us
to the extent that we failed to win an election.”

Julia Bard of the
Jewish Socialists Group warned that the entanglement of anti-semitism
in Labour’s left-right struggle in recent years had “made
anti-semitism on the left much more difficult to challenge.”

But when minorities
including Jews are under attack around the world, “who should we go
to for support — institutions that have declared support for Trump
like the Board of Deputies, that refuse to criticise the Tories for
their close links to fascists across Europe, or to people like
Jeremy, who has anti-racism woven through his political being?”

Jonathan

staat waar o.a.

Terwijl diezelfde VS in persoon van o.a. Pompeo

The
Plot to Keep Jeremy Corbyn Out of Power

Jonathan
Cook

As
the establishment’s need to keep him away from power has grown more
urgent and desperate so has the nature of the attacks

(CD Op-Ed) — In
the latest of the interminable media “furores” about Jeremy
Corbyn’s supposed unfitness to lead Britain’s Labour party –
let alone become prime minister – it is easy to forget where we
were shortly before he won the support of an overwhelming majority of
Labour members to head the party.

In
the preceding two years, it was hard to avoid on TV the figure of
Russell Brand, a comedian and minor film star who had reinvented
himself, after years of battling addiction, as a spiritual
guru-cum-political revolutionary.

Brand’s
fast-talking, plain-speaking criticism of the existing political
order, calling it discredited, unaccountable and unrepresentative,
was greeted with smirking condescension by the political and media
establishment. Nonetheless, in an era before Donald Trump had become
president of the United States, the British media were happy to
indulge Brand for a while, seemingly believing he or his ideas might
prove a ratings winner with younger audiences.

But
Brand started to look rather more impressive than anyone could have
imagined. He took on supposed media heavyweights like the
BBC’s
Jeremy
Paxman
 and
Channel 4’s
Jon
Snow
 and
charmed and shamed them into submission – both with his compassion
and his thoughtful radicalism. Even in the gladiatorial-style battle
of wits so beloved of modern TV, he made these titans of the
political interview look mediocre, shallow and out of touch. Videos
of these head-to-heads went viral, and Brand won hundreds of
thousands of new followers.

Then
he overstepped the mark.

Democracy
as charade

Instead
of simply criticising the political system, Brand argued that it was
in fact so rigged by the powerful, by corporate interests, that
western democracy had become a charade. Elections were
pointless.
Our votes were simply a fig-leaf, concealing the fact that our
political leaders were there to represent not us but the interests of
globe-spanning corporations. Political and media elites had been
captured by unshored corporate money. Our voices had become
irrelevant.

Brand
didn’t just talk the talk. He started committing to direct action.
He
shamed our
do-nothing politicians and corporate media – the devastating
Grenfell Tower fire had yet to happen – by helping to gain
attention for a group of poor tenants in London who were taking on
the might of a corporation that had become their landlord and wanted
to evict them to develop their homes for a much richer clientele.
Brand’s revolutionary words had turned into revolutionary action

But
just as Brand’s rejection of the old politics began to articulate a
wider mood, it was stopped in its tracks. After Corbyn was
unexpectedly elected Labour leader, offering for the first time in
living memory a politics that listened to people before money,
Brand’s style of rejectionism looked a little too cynical, or at
least premature.

While
Corbyn’s victory marked a sea-change, it is worth recalling,
however, that it occurred only because of a mistake. Or perhaps two.

The
Corbyn accident

First,
a handful of Labour MPs agreed to nominate Corbyn for the leadership
contest, scraping him past the threshold needed to get on the ballot
paper. Most backed him only because they wanted to give the
impression of an election that was fair and open. After his victory,
some loudly
regretted having
assisted him. None had thought a representative of the tiny and
besieged left wing of the parliamentary party stood a chance of
winning – not after Tony Blair and his acolytes had spent more than
two decades remaking Labour, using their own version of entryism to
eradicate any vestiges of socialism in the party. These “New
Labour” MPs were there, just as Brand had noted, to represent the
interests of a corporate class, not ordinary people.

Corbyn
had very different ideas from most of his colleagues. Over the years
he had broken with the consensus of the dominant Blairite faction
time and again in parliamentary votes, consistently taking a minority
view that later proved to be on the
right
side of history
.
He alone among the leadership contenders spoke unequivocally against
austerity, regarding it as a way to leech away more public money to
enrich the corporations and banks that had already pocketed vast sums
from the public coffers – so much so that by 2008 they had nearly
bankrupted the entire western economic system.

And
second, Corbyn won because of a recent change in the party’s
rulebook – one now much regretted by party managers. A new internal
balloting system gave more weight to the votes of ordinary members
than the parliamentary party. The members, unlike the party machine,
wanted Corbyn.

Corbyn’s
success didn’t really prove Brand wrong. Even the best designed
systems have flaws, especially when the maintenance of the system’s
image as benevolent is considered vitally important. It wasn’t that
Corbyn’s election had shown Britain’s political system was
representative and accountable. It was simply evidence that corporate
power had made itself vulnerable to a potential accident by
preferring to work out of sight, in the shadows, to maintain the
illusion of democracy. Corbyn was that accident.

Brainwashing
under freedom’

Corbyn’s
success also wasn’t evidence that the power structure he challenged
had weakened. The system was still in place and it still had a
chokehold on the political and media establishments that exist to
uphold its interests. Which is why it has been mobilising these
forces endlessly to damage Corbyn and avert the risk of a further,
even more disastrous “accident”, such as his becoming prime
minister.

Listing
the ways the state-corporate media have sought to undermine Corbyn
would sound preposterous to anyone not deeply immersed in these
media-constructed narratives. But almost all of us have been exposed
to this kind of “
brainwashing
under freedom

since birth.

The
initial attacks on Corbyn were for being poorly dressed, sexist,
unstatesmanlike, a national security threat, a Communist spy –
relentless, unsubstantiated smears the like of which no other party
leader had ever faced. But over time the allegations became even more
outrageously propagandistic as the campaign to undermine him not only
failed but backfired – not least, because Labour membership
rocketed under Corbyn to make the party the largest in Europe.

As
the establishment’s need to keep him away from power has grown more
urgent and desperate so has the nature of the attacks.

Redefining
anti-semitism

Corbyn
was extremely unusual in many ways as the leader of a western party
within sight of power. Personally he was self-effacing and lived
modestly. Ideologically he was resolutely against the thrust of four
decades of a turbo-charged neoliberal capitalism unleashed by
Thatcher and Reagan in the early 1980s; and he opposed foreign wars
for empire, fashionable “humanitarian interventions” whose real
goal was to attack other sovereign states either to control their
resources, usually oil, or line the pockets of the
military-industrial complex.

It
was difficult to attack Corbyn directly for these positions. There
was the danger that they might prove popular with voters. But Corbyn
was seen to have an Achilles’ heel. He was a life-long anti-racism
activist and well known for his support for the rights of the
long-suffering Palestinians. The political and media establishments
quickly learnt that they could recharacterise his support for the
Palestinians and criticism of Israel as anti-semitism. He was soon
being presented as a leader happy to preside over an
“institutionally” anti-semitic party.

Under
pressure of these attacks, Labour was forced to adopt a new and
highly controversial definition of anti-semitism – one
rejected by
leading jurists and later
repudiated by
the lawyer who devised it – that expressly conflates criticism of
Israel, and anti-Zionism, with Jew hatred.

One
by one Corbyn’s few ideological allies in the party – those
outside the Blairite consensus – have been picked off as
anti-semites. They have either fallen foul of this conflation or, as
with Labour MP Chris Williamson, they have been tarred and feathered
for trying to defend Labour’s record against the accusations of a
supposed endemic anti-semitism in its ranks.

The
bad faith of the anti-semitism smears were particularly clear in
relation to Williamson. The comment that plunged him into so much
trouble – now leading twice to his suspension – was videoed. In
it he can be heard calling anti-semitism a “scourge” that must be
confronted. But also, in line with all
evidence,
Williamson denied that Labour had any particular anti-semitism
problem. In part he blamed the party for being too ready to concede
unwarranted ground to critics, further stoking the attacks and
smears. He noted that Labour had been “demonised as a racist,
bigoted party”, adding: “Our party’s response has been partly
responsible for that because in my opinion … we’ve backed off far
too much, we have given too much ground, we’ve been too
apologetic.”

The
Guardian has been typical in mischaracterising Williamson’s remarks
not once but each time it has covered developments in his case. Every
Guardian
report has
stated, against the audible evidence, that Williamson said Labour was
“too apologetic about anti-semitism”. In short, the Guardian and
the rest of the media have insinuated that Williamson approves of
anti-semitism. But what he actually said was that Labour was “too
apologetic” when dealing with unfair or unreasonable allegations of
anti-semitism, that it had too willingly accepted the unfounded
premise of its critics that the party condoned racism.

Like
the Salem witch-hunts

The
McCarthyite nature of this process of misrepresentation and guilt by
association was underscored when Jewish Voice for Labour (JVL), a group of
Jewish party members who have defended Corbyn against the
anti-semitism smears, voiced their support for Williamson. Jon
Lansman, a founder of the Momentum group originally close to Corbyn,
turned on the JVL
calling them
“part of the problem and not part of the solution to antisemitism
in the Labour Party”. In an additional, ugly but increasingly
normalised remark, he added: “Neither the vast majority of
individual members of JVL nor the organisation itself can really be
said to be part of the Jewish community.”

In
this febrile atmosphere, Corbyn’s allies have been required to
confess that the party is institutionally anti-semitic, to distance
themselves from Corbyn and often to submit to anti-semitism training.
To do otherwise, to deny the accusation is, as in the Salem
witch-hunts, treated as proof of guilt.

The
anti-semitism claims have been regurgitated almost daily across the
narrow corporate media “spectrum”, even though they are
unsupported by any
actual
evidence
of
an anti-semitism problem in Labour beyond a marginal one
representative of wider British society. The allegations have reached
such fever-pitch, stoked into a hysteria by the media, that the party
is now under
investigation by
the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) – the only party apart
from the neo-Nazi British National Party ever to face such an
investigation.

These
attacks have transformed the whole discursive landscape on Israel,
the Palestinians, Zionism and anti-semitism in ways unimaginable 20
years ago, when I first started reporting on the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict. Then the claim that anti-Zionism – opposition to Israel
as a state privileging Jews over non-Jews – was the same as
anti-semitism sounded patently ridiculous. It was an idea promoted
only by the most unhinged apologists for Israel.

Now,
however, we have leading liberal commentators such as the Guardian’s
Jonathan Freedland
claiming not
only that Israel is integral to their Jewish identity but that they
speak for all other Jews in making such an identification. To
criticise Israel is to attack them as Jews, and by implication to
attack all Jews. And therefore any Jew dissenting from this
consensus, any Jew identifying as anti-Zionist, any Jew in Labour who
supports Corbyn – and there are many, even if they are largely
ignored – are denounced, in line wth Lansman, as the “wrong kind
of Jews”. It may be absurd logic, but such ideas are now so
commonplace as to be unremarkable.

In
fact, the weaponisation of anti-semitism against Corbyn has become so
normal that, even while I was writing this post, a new nadir was
reached. Jeremy Hunt, the foreign secretary who hopes to defeat Boris
Johnson in the upcoming Tory leadership race, as good
as
accused Corbyn
of being a new Hitler, a man who as prime minister might allow Jews
to be exterminated, just as occurred in the Nazi death camps.

Too
‘frail’ to be PM

Although
anti-semitism has become the favoured stick with which to beat
Corbyn, other forms of attack regularly surface. The latest are
comments by unnamed “senior civil servants” reported in the
Times
alleging that
Corbyn is too physically frail and mentally ill-equipped to grasp the
details necessary to serve as prime minister. It barely matters
whether the comment was actually made by a senior official or simply
concocted by the Times. It is yet further evidence of the political
and media establishments’ anti-democratic efforts to discredit
Corbyn as a general election looms.

One
of the ironies is that media critics of Corbyn regularly accuse him
of failing to make any political capital from the shambolic disarray
of the ruling Conservative party, which is eating itself alive over
the terms of Brexit, Britain’s imminent departure from the European
Union. But it is the corporate media – which serves both as
society’s main forum of debate and as a supposed watchdog on power
– that is starkly failing to hold the Tories to account. While the
media obsess about Corbyn’s supposed mental deficiencies, they have
smoothed the path of Boris Johnson, a man who personifies the word
“buffoon” like no one else in political life, to become the new
leader of the Conservative party and therefore by default – and
without an election – the next prime minister.

An
indication of how the relentless character assassination of Corbyn is
being coordinated was hinted at early on, months after his election
as Labour leader in 2015. A British military general
told
the Times
,
again anonymously, that there would be “direct action” – what
he also termed a “mutiny” – by the armed forces should Corbyn
ever get in sight of power. The generals, he said, regarded Corbyn as
a national security threat and would use any means, “fair or foul”,
to prevent him implementing his political programme.

Running
the gauntlet

But
this campaign of domestic attacks on Corbyn needs to be understood in
a still wider framework, which relates to Britain’s abiding
Transatlantic “special relationship”, one that in reality means
that the UK serves as Robin to the United States’ Batman, or as a
very junior partner to the global hegemon.

Last
month a private conversation concerning Corbyn between the US
secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, and the heads of a handful of
rightwing American Jewish organisations was leaked. Contrary to the
refrain of the UK corporate media that Corbyn is so absurd a figure
that he could never win an election, the fear expressed on both sides
of that Washington conversation was that the Labour leader might soon
become Britain’s prime minister.

Framing
Corbyn yet again as an anti-semite, a US Jewish leader could be heard
asking Pompeo if he would be “willing to work with us to take on
actions if life becomes very difficult for Jews in the UK”.
Pompeo
responded that
it was possible “Mr Corbyn manages to run the gauntlet and get
elected” – a telling phrase that attracted remarkably little
attention, as did the story itself, given that it revealed one of the
most senior Trump administration officials explicitly talking about
meddling directly in the outcome of a UK election

Here
is the dictionary definition of “run the gauntlet”: to take part
in a form of corporal punishment in which the party judged guilty is
forced to run between two rows of soldiers, who strike out and attack
him.

So
Pompeo was suggesting that there already is a gauntlet – systematic
and organised blows and strikes against Corbyn – that he is being
made to run through. In fact, “running the gauntlet” precisely
describes the experience Corbyn has faced since he was elected Labour
leader – from the corporate media, from the dominant Blairite
faction of his own party, from rightwing, pro-Israel Jewish
organisations like the Board of Deputies, and from anonymous generals
and senior civil servants.

We
cheated, we stole’

Pompeo
continued: “You should know, we won’t wait for him to do those
things to begin to push back. We will do our level best. It’s too
risky and too important and too hard once it’s already happened.”

So,
Washington’s view is that action must be taken before Corbyn
reaches a position of power. To avoid any danger he might become the
UK’s next prime minister, the US will do its “level best” to
“push back”. Assuming that this hasn’t suddenly become the US
administration’s priority, how much time does the US think it has
before Corbyn might win power? How close is a UK election?

As
everyone in Washington is only too keenly aware, a UK election has
been a distinct possiblity since the Conservatives set up a minority
goverment two years ago with the help of fickle, hardline Ulster
loyalists. Elections have been looming ever since, as the UK ruling
party has torn itself apart over Brexit, its MPs regularly defeating
their own leader, prime minister Theresa May, in parliamentary votes.

So
if Pompeo is saying, as he appears to be, that the US will do
whatever it can to make sure Corbyn doesn’t win an election well
before that election takes place, it means the US is already deeply
mired in anti-Corbyn activity. Pompeo is not only saying that the US
is ready to meddle in the UK’s election, which is bad enough; he is
hinting that it is already meddling in UK politics to make sure the
will of the British people does not bring to power the wrong leader.

Remember
that Pompeo, a former CIA director, once effectively America’s spy
chief, was unusually frank about what his agency got up to when he
was in charge. He
observed:
“I was the CIA director. We lied, we cheated, we stole. It’s –
it was like – we had entire training courses.”

One
would have to be remarkably naive to think that Pompeo changed the
CIA’s culture during his short tenure. He simply became the
figurehead of the world’s most powerful spying outfit, one that had
spent decades developing the principles of US exceptionalism, that
had lied its way to recent wars in Iraq and Libya, as it had done
earlier in Vietnam and in justifying the nuclear bombing of
Hiroshima, and much more. Black ops and psyops were not invented by
Pompeo. They have long been a mainstay of US foreign policy.

An
eroding consensus

It
takes a determined refusal to join the dots not to see a clear
pattern here.

Brand
was right that the system is rigged, that our political and media
elites are captured, and that the power structure of our societies
will defend itself by all means possible, “fair or foul.” Corbyn
is far from alone in this treatment. The system is similarly rigged
to stop a democratic socialist like Bernie Sanders – though not a
rich businessman like Donald Trump – winning the nomination for the
US presidential race. It is also rigged to silence real journalists
like Julian Assange who are trying to overturn the access journalism
prized by the corporate media – with its reliance on official
sources and insiders for stories – to divulge the secrets of the
national security states we live in.

There
is a conspiracy at work here, though it is not of the kind lampooned
by critics: a small cabal of the rich secretly pullng the strings of
our societies. The conspiracy operates at an institutional level, one
that has evolved over time to create structures and refine and
entrench values that keep power and wealth in the hands of the few.
In that sense we are all part of the conspiracy. It is a conspiracy
that embraces us every time we unquestioningly accept the
“consensual” narratives laid out for us by our education systems,
politicians and media. Our minds have been occupied with myths, fears
and narratives that turned us into the turkeys that keep voting for
Christmas.

That
system is not impregnable, however. The consensus so carefully
constructed over many decades is rapidly breaking down as the power
structure that underpins it is forced to grapple with real-world
problems it is entirely unsuited to resolve, such as the gradual
collapse of western economies premised on infinite growth and a
climate that is fighting back against our insatiable appetite for the
planet’s resources.

As
long as we colluded in the manufactured consensus of western
societies, the system operated without challenge or meaningful
dissent. A deeply ideological system destroying the planet was
treated as if it was natural, immutable, the summit of human
progress, the end of history. Those times are over. Accidents like
Corbyn will happen more frequently, as will extreme climate events
and economic crises. The power structures in place to prevent such
accidents will by necessity grow more ham-fisted, more belligerent,
less concealed to get their way. And we might finally understand that
a system designed to pacify us while a few grow rich at the expense
of our children’s future and our own does not have to continue.
That we can raise our voices and loudly say: “No!”

Paul

de haatcampagne op feiten gevoerd? (de vraag stellen is haar

A
story about Israel’s
alliance
with the global far-right
 that
Israel’s supporters would rather you not hear.

Posted
March 20, 2019

Acclaimed
British directors Mike Leigh and Peter Kosminsky have
praised WitchHunt.

Leigh
said it “exposes with chilling accuracy the terrifying threat that
now confronts democracy.”

Kosminsky
said it “packs a powerful punch” and is “telling a story we
just aren’t hearing at the moment.”

Last
month, left-wing member of Parliament
Chris
Williamson
 was suspended as
a Labour Party member – after a
long
campaign
 by
Israel lobby groups against him.

Williamson
had booked a room in Parliament on behalf of the group
Jewish
Voice for Labour
 so
that WitchHunt could be screened.

But
it was canceled after the Labour leadership came
under
severe pressure by
right-wing and pro-Israel Labour MPs.

Unless
Williamson’s Labour suspension is reversed before the next
election, the move will make it hard for him to return as an MP.

Manufactured
outrage

A
source in Parliament told The Electronic Intifada that the ringleader
of much of the outrage against Williamson was
Ruth
Smeeth
.

Smeeth
is a
former
professional Israel lobbyist
 who,
since becoming an MP, has
continued to
receive
donations
from prominent Israel lobby funders
.

few
days before his suspension
 Smeeth
announced to a meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party that a room
had been booked to show the film.

This
caused the sound of “250 voices doing a sharp intake of breath,”
according to our source.

Smeeth
told the gathered MPs that she didn’t know who’d booked the room,
but threatened that, “I can assure you that I will find out.”

According
to our source in Parliament, Smeeth’s announcement to the
Parliamentary Labour Party resulted in howls of outrage, including
“Shame!”, “Disgraceful!” and, sarcastically, “Well done
Chris!”

None
of these MPs had even seen the film, as it had not been released at
the time.

Their
“outrage” was down to the central role in the film played
by
Jackie
Walker
.

Far-right
alliance

Walker
is a Black and Jewish anti-racist activist.

Her
opposition to Zionism, Israel’s state-sanctioned ideology, plays a
key role in the film, as does her
likely
expulsion by Labour later this month
.

But WitchHunt takes
a far wider view than Walker’s case alone.

It
puts the entire, years-long,
manufactured
“Labour anti-Semitism crisis” campaign
 into
its correct global context.

As
the film’s narrator argues in its conclusion, the fact
that
far-right European governments and parties today are
growing ever closer to Israel shows a “convergence of fascist and
neo-Nazi groups with hardline Zionists.”

As
a worrying UK example of this, the film cites anti-Muslim fascist
leader
Tommy
Robinson’s
 recent
trip to
Israel
and funding by anti-Palestinian groups
.

This
natural alliance may now be part of a more coordinated common cause”
of the far-right and

Zionism around the world, the film’s narrator
argues.

The

Labour Party……

schunnige campagne vinden…….

The

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor The Guardian refused to publish this scathing letter from over 200 Jewish women. It’s obvious why.

It
turns out the
Guardian refused to
publish a scathing letter from over 200 Jewish women on 10 March.
The
Guardian claims that
it didn’t include the letter because it already covered similar
ground.

But
there are other obvious explanations for its refusal. Because the
letter is
critical of
the
Guardian‘s
reporting on Labour and antisemitism – particularly its
“unquestioning” coverage of rhetoric from political opponents of
Jeremy Corbyn. Also, the Jewish women are communicating a perspective
on Labour and antisemitism that the
Guardianrarely
acknowledges.

Baffled,
hurt and infuriated”

The
letter, which was published by the
Morning
Star
opens by
calling out the
Guardian‘s
approach to allegations from Margaret Hodge:

We,
all Jewish women, are baffled, hurt and infuriated by your
unquestioning coverage of Margaret Hodge’s campaign against Jeremy
Corbyn (‘Just Close them down: Margaret Hodge on antisemitism in
Labour’s branches’, March 9). Hodge extends her allegations that
Corbyn is an ‘antisemite and racist’ under whom antisemitism ‘has
been given permission to come into the mainstream and, like a cancer,
is infecting and growing through the Party’”.

Hodge
provides no evidence of such horrific wrongdoing by Corbyn, nor by
‘mainstream’ Labour members. Her own submissions to the Labour
Party certainly don’t do the job: General Secretary, Jennie Formby
reported that Hodge’s 200 complaints concerned 111 individuals, of
whom only 20 were actually Party members”.

A
legitimate critique”

The
Jewish women also expressed support for Chris Williamson, who Labour
recently
suspended for
questioning the party’s approach to antisemitism allegations:

Williamson
presents a legitimate critique; Labour’s response to antisemitism
accusations has been unnecessarily defensive, he said, not that it
has been ‘too apologetic about antisemitism’ itself.

Indeed, Williamson did
not deny that there’s antisemitism in Labour. The MP for Derby
North
referred to
the “scourge of antisemitism” in the same address. He took issue
with the party’s failure to properly tackle Corbyn’s political
opponents, who have been
demonising Labour
wholesale “as a racist, bigoted party”.

The
IHRA document has been shredded”

The
group also criticised the
Guardian‘s
reporting on
the
International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of
antisemitism
:

Meanwhile,
no mention that the IHRA document has been shredded by two QCs, plus
Jewish human rights specialist, Sir Geoffrey Bindman and Jewish
retired Lord Justice of Appeal, Sir Stephen Sedley.

The
mainstream media consistently report on the IHRA document as the
‘internationally recognised’ definition of antisemitism.
But
IHRA is only made up of 31 member
countries and
only 26% of them
recognise Palestine
as a state. The lack of Palestinian representation explains why these
member countries accept a definition of antisemitism that Palestinian
advocacy groups uniformly
condemn.
In contrast to the IHRA nations, 71% of the 193 UN countries
do
recognise Palestine.
So the widespread affirmation that the definition is ‘internationally
recognised’ is
disputed.

Indeed,
24 Palestinian organisations, trade unions, and networks in the UK
have also
criticisedthe
definition:

This
non-legally binding definition attempts to erase Palestinian history,
demonise solidarity with the Palestinian struggle for freedom,
justice and equality, suppress freedom of expression, and shield
Israel’s far-right regime

Guardian response

The Guardian claimed it
decided not to publish the letter because the issue had “already
been aired before”. In
another
letter
 to
the
Guardian,
over 200 Jewish Labour supporters also condemned the narrative on
Labour and antisemitism:

We
believe that the Labour party under the progressive leadership of
Jeremy Corbyn is a crucial ally in the fight against bigotry and
reaction. His lifetime record of campaigning for equality and human
rights, including consistent support for initiatives against
antisemitism, is formidable. His involvement strengthens this
struggle.

Yet
the paper has no problem publishing
hundreds of
articles amplifying allegations of antisemitism against the Labour
Party. A spokesperson also
told the Morning
Star
 that
the paper receives:
hundreds
of letters a day and unfortunately cannot publish every letter we
receive.

Hijack
our history”

Rounding
off their letter, the Jewish women
wrote:

All
signatories to this letter grew up in the shadow of the Holocaust. We
know we must maintain eternal vigilance against antisemitic
resurgence. But we also celebrate our Jewishness, especially the
disputatiousness (pace our aphorism: two Jews three opinions) central
to Jewish identity. We are terrified by Margaret Hodge’s attempt to
hijack our history and rewrite our identity and by unwillingness to
investigate, fact check and challenge her allegations.

The
data supports their condemnation of the establishment for weaponising
antisemitism against Labour. Analysis from academics at
Goldsmiths
found that
reporting across the mainstream media of Labour and antisemitism was
‘distorted’, ‘inaccurate’ and ‘misleading’.

With
the media peddling such an entrenched smear campaign, we must join
these Jewish people in unapologetically correcting the record.

goede relatie had……

In

Men

The
Fake News Nazi – Corbyn, Williamson And The Anti-Semitism Scandal

By
Editor Media Lens

March
08, 2019 “Information
Clearing House
” –  One of us had a discussion
with an elderly relative:

‘He
can’t be allowed to become Prime Minister.’

‘Why
not?’

‘It’s
so awful…’

‘What
is?’

‘The
way he hates the Jews.’

The
last comment was spoken with real anguish, the result of continuous
exposure to just two main news sources: the Daily Mail and the BBC.

What
is astonishing is that, just four years ago, essentially no-one held
this view of Jeremy Corbyn.

Corbyn
first became an MP in 1983. He stood for the Labour leadership 32
years later, in May 2015. We searched the ProQuest database for UK
newspaper articles containing:

‘Jeremy
Corbyn’ and ‘anti-semitism’ before 1 May 2015 = 18 hits

‘Jeremy
Corbyn’ and ‘anti-semitism’ after 1 May 2015 = 11,251 hits

None
of the 18 hits accused Corbyn of anti-semitism. For his first 32
years as an MP, it just wasn’t a theme associated with him.

We
also searched the ProQuest database for UK newspaper articles
containing:

‘Labour
Party’ and ‘anti-semitism’ before 1 May 2015 = 5,347 hits

‘Labour
Party’ and ‘anti-semitism’ after 1 May 2015 = 13,921 hits

The
archive begins in 1980, which means that more than twice as many
articles have included these terms in the last four years than in the
35 years from 1980 until May 2015 when Corbyn stood for the Labour
leadership. A standard response to these findings runs
along
these lines:

‘Irrelevant
backbencher gets less Press attention than Leader of The Opposition
SHOCKER. What’s your next scoop, Water Wet, Sky Blue?’

But
in fact, Corbyn was not an irrelevant backbencher. We found 3,662
hits for articles mentioning Corbyn before May 2015. Many of these
are mentions in passing, but he had also long been a high-profile
anti-war MP at a time of numerous wars. And he was frequently
smeared, only not about his supposed anti-semitism.
Consider, for example, an article that appeared in The Sun in 1999,
under a typically cruel title:

‘Why
did it take you so long to dump him, Mrs Corbyn?’ (Ally Ross, The
Sun, 13 May 1999)

The
story:

‘EXTREME
Left MP Jeremy Corbyn has been dumped by his missus after an amazing
bust-up over their son’s education.’

The
key issue, according to The Sun:

‘Now
the question on everyone’s lips is: Why did it take her so long to
leave the loathsome Lefty, and more importantly, why is she only
moaning about his choice of schools?’

Because
there was, apparently, plenty to moan about. The Sun described Corbyn
as ‘class crusader Jeremy – a rabid IRA sympathiser’ who ‘not only
looks and dresses like a third-rate Open University lecturer, he
thinks like one too. In 1984 the Provo stooge invited twice-convicted
terrorist and bomber Linda Quigley to the House of Commons just 13
days after the IRA’s murderous attack on Tories staying at the Grand
Hotel in Brighton’.

This
was pretty brutal stuff. The Sun added of Corbyn’s ex-wife:

‘Claudia’s
saviour of the masses also suffers incredible delusions of grandeur.
Communist states may be falling like dominoes, but raving Red Jeremy
still believes his outdated views are relevant to modern-day
Britain.’

And:

‘Not
only is Jeremy a political coward who backs terrorists, he is also a
self-confessed big girl’s blouse.’

And:

‘Jeremy’s
mis-shapen suits, lumpy jumpers and nylon shirts are not exactly what
the well-dressed radical is wearing in 1999… Claudia should be
aware her ex is irredeemably, unforgivably, annoyingly stupid.’

Given
the no-holds-barred nature of the smear, it is amazing that The Sun
made no mention at all of Corbyn’s vile anti-semitism,
viewed as his most obvious and dangerous defect now.

The
reason is that, as this shows, not even his worst enemies viewed
him as an anti-semite. The extreme Tory press aside, the accepted
view of Corbyn pre-2015 is indicated by a long, admiring
piece in
which Jewish journalist Deborah Ross, whose family members
were
murdered in
Polish pogroms even before the Nazi Holocaust was unleashed,
interviewed him for the Independent in 2005. Ross commented:

‘He
is also, it is generally agreed, an exemplary constituency MP. Even
my friend Rebecca, who recently sought his help on a local issue, and
never usually has a nice word to say about anybody, which is why I
like her, describes him as a “totally genuine mensch”.’

Ross
added:

‘As
The Sun would have it, Mr Corbyn is a “beardy Bolshevik”
and “loathsome lefty” but he does not come across as
either. He has strong opinions but does not demand you listen to
them, if you don’t want to.

‘He
is scandal free, unless you count the hoo-ha a few years back when it
was revealed that Jeremy’s oldest son would be attending a grammar
school outside the borough.’

Joseph
Finlay is a former Deputy Editor of the Jewish Quarterly, who
co-founded a range of grassroots Jewish organisations such as Moishe
House London, Wandering Jews, Jewdas and The Open Talmud Project. On
2 March 2018, Finlay wrote in his
blog under
the title, ‘Jeremy Corbyn is an anti-racist, not an anti-Semite’:

‘Firstly
we need to restore some perspective. The Labour party has thousands
of Jewish members, many Jewish councillors, a number of prominent
Jewish MPs and several Jewish members of its ruling council. Many
people at the heart of the Corbyn team, such as Jon Lansman, James
Schneider and Rhea Wolfson are also Jewish. Ed Miliband, the previous
party leader, was Jewish (and suffered antisemitism at the hands of
the press and the Conservatives). I have been a member for five years
and, as a Jew, have had only positive experiences.’

Finlay
added:

‘Jeremy
Corbyn has been MP for Islington North since 1983 – a constituency
with a significant Jewish population. Given that he has regularly
polled over 60% of the vote (73% in 2017) it seems likely that a
sizeable number of Jewish constituents voted for him. As a
constituency MP he regularly visited synagogues and has appeared at
many Jewish religious and cultural events. He is close friends with
the leaders of the Jewish Socialist Group, from whom he has gained a
rich knowledge of the history of the Jewish Labour Bund, and he has
named the defeat of Mosley’s Fascists at the Battle of Cable as a key
historical moment for him. His 2017 Holocaust Memorial Day statement
talked about Shmuel Zygielboym, the Polish Bund leader exiled to
London who committed suicide in an attempt to awaken the world to the
Nazi genocide. How many British politicians have that level of
knowledge of modern Jewish history?’

Israel-based
journalist Jonathan Cook
notes that
a recent Labour Party
report ‘decisively
undercut’ the claims of Corbyn’s critics ‘not only of endemic
anti-semitism in Labour, but of any significant problem at all’. Cook
summarised:

‘Over
the previous 10 months, 673 complaints had been filed against Labour
members over alleged anti-semitic behaviour, many based on online
comments. In a third of those cases, insufficient evidence had been
produced.

‘The
453 other allegations represented 0.08 percent of the 540,000-strong
Labour membership. Hardly “endemic” or “institutional”,
it seems.’

He
added:

‘That
echoed an earlier
report by
the Commons home affairs committee, which found there was “no
reliable, empirical evidence” that Labour had more of an
anti-semitism problem than any other British political party.’

In
‘Antisemitism in contemporary Great Britain: A
study of
attitudes towards Jews and Israel’ by the Jewish Institute for Policy
Research, L. Daniel Staetsky found:

‘Levels
of antisemitism among those on the left-wing of the political
spectrum, including the far-left, are indistinguishable from those
found in the general population. Yet, all parts of those on the left
of the political spectrum – including the “slightly
left-of-centre,” the “fairly left-wing” and the “very
left-wing” – exhibit higher levels of anti-Israelism than
average. The most antisemitic group on the political spectrum
consists of those who identify as very right-wing: the presence of
antisemitic attitudes in this group is 2 to 4 times higher compared
to the general population.’

The
report notes that ‘the prevalence of antisemitism on the far right is
considerably higher than on the left and in the political centre’.

Noam
Chomsky has commented:

‘The
charges of anti-Semitism against Corbyn are without merit, an
underhanded contribution to the disgraceful efforts to fend off the
threat that a political party might emerge that is led by an
admirable and decent human being, a party that is actually committed
to the interests and just demands of its popular constituency and the
great majority of the population generally, while also authentically
concerned with the rights of suffering and oppressed people
throughout the world. Plainly an intolerable threat to order.’ (Noam
Chomsky, email to Media Lens, 9 September 2018)

Suspending
Chris Williamson

On
February 27, a propaganda blitz was launched against anti-war Labour
MP Chris Williamson who had been
filmed saying
that Labour Party responses to claims of anti-semitism had
exacerbated the crisis:

‘I’ve
got to say, I think our party’s response has been partly
responsible… Because, in my opinion, we’ve backed off far too much,
we’ve given too much ground, we’ve been too apologetic.’

Williamson
added:

‘We’ve
done more to address the scourge of anti-semitism than any political
party.’

It
is clear that Williamson was strongly endorsing the fight against
anti-semitism and was proud of the Labour Party’s record. Actual
anti-semites talk of ‘the scourge of Judaism’, Williamson talked of
‘the scourge of anti-semitism’. He was suggesting that the party had
been too apologetic in responding to a cynical smear campaign
attempting to destroy Corbyn by exploiting the issue of
anti-semitism.

Others
chose to see it differently. Guardian columnist Owen
Jones
responded to
Williamson’s comments:

‘This
is utterly out of order. When does the left ever say we’ve been “too
apologetic” about fighting racism or bigotry? Why is he, a
non-Jew, right and Jon Lansman – a Jewish socialist who founded
Momentum and ran Corbyn’s second leadership campaign – wrong about
anti-Semitism?’

We replied:

‘”When
does the left ever say we’ve been “too apologetic” about
fighting racism or bigotry?'”

‘He’s
*endorsing* the fight against racism and bigotry. He’s saying Labour
has been too apologetic in responding to a cynical smear campaign to
destroy Corbyn in the name of anti-racism.’

Ash
Sharkar of Novara Media
tweeted:

‘Chris
Williamson has been had the Labour whip suspended pending
investigation, which I think is the right decision. But much more
work must be done to proactively confront and dismantle
conspiratorial and antisemitic thinking on the left, and it goes much
further than expulsions.’

Aaron
Bastani, also of Novara Media,
wrote:

‘I
think media coverage of the “Labour anti-semitism crisis”
is completely disproportionate – primarily because it underplays
problem more broadly across society.

‘Equally,
hearing & reading the things I have in recent days I wouldn’t
feel welcome in the party as a Jewish person.’

In
our latest book, ‘Propaganda Blitz’, we noted a key factor driving
home these smear blitzes:

‘while
a demonising propaganda blitz may arise from rightist politics and
media, the propaganda coup de grace ending public doubt
often comes from the “left-liberal” journalists at the
Guardian, the Independent, the BBC and Channel 4; and also from
non-corporate journalists who crave acceptance by these media. Again,
the logic is clear: if even celebrity progressive
journalists – people famous for their principled stands, and
colourful socks and ties – join the denunciations, then
there must be something to the claims. At this point, it
actually becomes difficult to doubt it’. (David Edwards and David
Cromwell, ‘Propaganda Blitz’, Pluto Press, 2018, pp.8-9)

Foreign
Wars – Racism Versus Speciesism

The
truth of the corporate media’s ‘ethical concern’ becomes clearer when
we consider Corbyn’s record on foreign wars. While the UK affects to
care deeply about racism, Chomsky has noted that the West’s endless
‘interventions’ – all reflexively supported by the same media damning
Corbyn now – are manifestations of a prejudice, beyond even racism,
that is a kind of speciesism:

‘Namely,
knowing that you are massacring them but not doing so intentionally
because you don’t regard them as worthy of concern. That is, you
don’t even care enough about them to intend to kill them. Thus when I
walk down the street, if I stop to think about it I know I’ll
probably kill lots of ants, but I don’t intend to kill them, because
in my mind they do not even rise to the level where it matters. There
are many such examples. To take one of the very minor ones, when
Clinton bombed the al-Shifa pharmaceutical facility in Sudan, he and
the other perpetrators surely knew that the bombing would kill
civilians (tens of thousands, apparently). But Clinton and associates
did not intend to kill them, because by the standards of Western
liberal humanitarian racism, they are no more significant than ants.
Same in the case of tens of millions of others.’ (Chomsky ZNet blog,
‘Samantha Power, Bush & Terrorism,’ 31 July 2007)

Even
if Corbyn was an anti-semite, a racist, he would still be a far safer
ethical choice than Tory and Blairite speciesists who value human
beings on the level of ants. After all, we
find that
Jeremy Corbyn:

‘Consistently
voted against use of UK military forces in combat operations
overseas.’

‘Consistently
voted against the Iraq war.’

‘…
voted to say that the case for war against Iraq has not yet been
established’.

‘…
voted against a motion stating the Government should use all means
necessary to ensure the disarmament of Iraq’s weapons of mass
destruction. Support for the motion by the majority of MPs led to the
UK joining the US invasion of Iraq two days later’.

‘Generally
voted for investigations into the Iraq war.’

‘…
acted as teller for a vote on UK Air Strikes Against ISIL in Iraq’.

‘…
voted against the establishment of a no-fly zone in Libya’.

‘…
voted against the continued deployment of UK armed forces in
Afghanistan’.

‘…
voted to decline to authorise UK military action in Syria’.

‘…
voted against UK airstrikes against ISIL in Syria’.

‘Generally
voted against replacing Trident with a new nuclear weapons system.’

Consider,
by contrast, the record of the Labour MPs who have left the Labour
Party, supposedly in protest at the rise of anti-semitism, to form
The Independent Group:

Chuka
Umunna ‘Almost always
voted for
use of UK military forces in combat operations overseas.’

Angela
Smith ‘Almost always
voted for
use of UK military forces in combat operations overseas.’

Mike
Gapes ‘Generally
voted for
use of UK military forces in combat operations overseas.’

Chris
Leslie ‘Almost always
voted for
use of UK military forces in combat operations overseas.’

Luciana
Berger ‘Generally
voted for
use of UK military forces in combat operations overseas.’

Joan
Ryan: ‘Consistently
voted for
use of UK military forces in combat operations overseas’, ‘Consistently voted for the Iraq war’, ‘Consistently voted against
investigations into the Iraq war.’

Ann
Coffey ‘Almost always
voted for
use of UK military forces in combat operations overseas.’

Gavin
Shuker ‘
Voted a
mixture of for and against use of UK military forces in combat
operations overseas.’

Not
even his most extreme critics are suggesting that Corbyn is offering
the kind of threat to Jewish people consistently offered by Tory and
Blairite MPs to millions of people in countries like Iraq, Libya,
Syria, Venezuela, Iran and Yemen. Even if Corbyn had erred
in failing to perceive the ugliness of a
mural declared
antisemitic by the press; even if had been lax in taking action
against party racists, and so on, how do these failings compare to
the destruction of whole countries in lie-based wars of aggression?

Why
do corporate media never make this moral comparison? Because they
are incapable of perceiving US-UK crimes against humanity as crimes;
a wilful moral blindness that renders them completely unfit to pass
judgement on Corbyn. Especially as they are themselves, of course,
complicit in these same war crimes.

Conclusion

The
claim that Corbyn is an anti-semite presiding over a surge in Labour
Party anti-semitism is fake news; it is a scam of the utmost cynicism
and brutality. It should be viewed as the latest in
a
long line of attempts
to
destroy Corbyn by all necessary means. He has been smeared for not
bowing low enough, for not singing loudly enough, for hating women,
for disrespecting gay people, for consorting with terrorists, for
refusing to unleash a nuclear holocaust, for being a shambolic
leader, for being a shambolic dresser, for leading Labour towards
certain electoral disaster, for being a Putinite stooge, for aping
Trump, and so on. Now, finally, someone widely admired for thirty
years as a decent, socialist MP, has been transformed into an
anti-semite; or as game show assistant and political commentator
Rachel Riley
implies,
a ‘Nazi’.

Anti-semitism
does exist in the Labour Party, as it exists throughout UK society,
and of course these delusions should be resisted and exposed. But the
smear campaign against Corbyn is not rooted in concern for the
welfare of Jewish people; it is not even about blocking a political
leader who cares about Palestinian rights. It is about preventing
Corbyn from undoing Tony Blair’s great achievement of transforming
the Labour Party into a second Tory Party, thus ensuring voters have
no option challenging corporate domination, including the
‘humanitarian interventions’ for oil and other resources. The goal is
to stop Corbyn letting democracy out of its box.

Stephen
Law of Heythrop College, University of London,
warns that
cavalier accusations made ‘on the basis of obviously flimsy or
nonexistent evidence’ are ‘disrespecting the memory of the millions
who were slaughtered by real antisemitism during the Holocaust’. But
in fact, it is worse than that. State propagandists and their
corporate media allies are exploiting the suffering of
these millions as part of an attack on British democracy. This is
obscene. But it is not particularly shocking after the campaigns of
deceit which, as discussed, knowingly risked and then shattered the
lives of millions of innocent human beings in US-UK wars of
aggression.

One
thing is certain, if Corbyn and his style of socialism can be made to
disappear, we’ll hear no more about anti-semitism in the Labour
Party, just as we heard no more about Iraqi democracy after Saddam
Hussein, or human rights in Libya after Gaddafi; just as we will hear
no more about press freedom in Venezuela, if Maduro is overthrown.

As
this alert was being written, news
emerged that
Corbyn had been subjected to a physical assault in London, to muted
concern from almost all corporate media and journalists (compare
‘mainstream’
reaction to
news that Conservative MP Anna Soubry had been called a ‘Nazi’).
Journalists claimed Corbyn had merely had an egg thrown at him.
Labour MP Diane Abbott
tweeted:

‘I
was there. He punched Jeremy very hard. He happened to have an egg in
his palm. But it could have been a knife. Horrible’

Perhaps
journalists couldn’t bear to express concern for a person they have
so completely reviled for almost four years. Or perhaps they knew
their smears of a thoroughly decent, well-intentioned man would be
thrown back at them. More likely, they just didn’t care. And that,
finally, is the truth of their ‘ethical concern’ – they don’t care.
