Russian
Oligarch And Putin Pal Admits To Collusion, Secret Meetings

by Tyler
Durden

Sat,
09/01/2018 – 19:30

Russian
Oligarch Oleg Deripaska, a close associate of Vladimir Putin,
has gone on record with
The
Hill
‘s
John Solomon – admitting to colluding with Americans
leading up to the 2016 US election, except it might not be what
you’re thinking.

Deripaska,
rumored to be Donald Trump’s “
back
channel

to Putin via the Russian’s former association with Paul
Manafort, says he “colluded” with the
US
Government
 between 2009
and 2016.

In
2009, when
Robert
Mueller was running the FBI
,
the agency asked Deripaska to spend $25 million of his own money to
bankroll an FBI-supervised operation to rescue a retired FBI agent –
Robert Levinson, who was kidnapped in 2007 while working on a 2007
CIA contract in Iran. This in and of itself is more than a bit
strange.

Deripaska
agreed, however the Obama State Department, headed by Hillary
Clinton, scuttled a last-minute deal with Iran before Levinson
could be released. He hasn’t been heard from since.

FBI
agents courted Deripaska in 2009 in a series of secret hotel meetings
in Paris; Vienna; Budapest, Hungary, and Washington
.
Agents persuaded the aluminum industry magnate to underwrite the
mission. The Russian billionaire insisted the operation neither
involve nor harm his homeland. -The Hill

In
other words –
Trump’s
alleged “back channel” to Putin was in fact an FBI
asset
 who
spent $25 million helping Obama’s “scandal free”
administration find a kidnapped agent. Deripaska’s admitted

Steele,
Ohr and the 2016 US Election

As
the
New
York Times
 frames
it, distancing Deripaska from the FBI (no mention of the $25
million rescue effort, for example), the Russian aluminum magnate was
just one of several Putin-linked Oligarchs the FBI tried to flip.

The
attempt to flip Mr. Deripaska was part of a broader, clandestine
American effort to gauge the possibility of gaining cooperation from
roughly a half-dozen of Russia’s richest men,
 nearly
all of whom, like Mr. Deripaska, depend on President Vladimir V.
Putin to maintain their wealth, the officials said. –
NYT

Central
to the recruiting effort were two central players in the
Trump-Russia investigation; twice-demoted DOJ #4 official
 Bruce
Ohr and Christopher Steele
 –
the author of the largely unverified “Steele Dossier.”

Steele,
a longtime associate of Ohr’s, worked for Deripaska beginning in 2012
researching a business rival – work which would evolve to the point
where the former British spy was interfacing with the Obama
administration on his behalf – resulting in Deripaska regaining entry
into the United States, where he visited numerous times between 2009
and 2017.

The
State Department tried to keep him from getting a U.S. visa between
2006 and 2009 because they believed he had unspecified connections to
criminal elements in Russia as he consolidated power in the aluminum
industry. Deripaska has denied those allegations…

Whatever
the case,
it
is irrefutable that after he began helping the FBI, Deripaska
regained entry to the United States
.
And he visited numerous times between 2009 and 2017, visa entry
records show. –
The
Hill

Deripaska
is now banned from the United States as one of
several
Russians sanctioned
 in
April in response to alleged 2016 election meddling.

In
a September 2016 meeting,
Deripaska
told FBI agents that it was “preposterous” that Paul
Manafort was colluding with Russia to help Trump win the 2016
election
.
This, despite the fact that Deripaska and Manafort’s business
relationship “ended in lawsuits”, per
The
Hill
 –
and the Russian would have every reason to throw Manafort under the
bus if he wanted some revenge on his old associate.

So
the
FBI
and DOJ secretly collaborated with Trump’s alleged
backchannel over a seven-year period
,
starting with Levinson, then on Deripaska’s Visa, and finally
regarding whether Paul Manafort was an intermediary to Putin.
Deripaska vehemently denies the assertion, and even took out
newspaper advertisements in the US last year volunteering to testify
to Congress, refuting an
AP
report
 that
he and Manafort secretly worked on a plan to “greatly benefit
the Putin government” a decade ago.

Soon
after the advertisements ran, representatives for the House and
Senate Intelligence Committees called a Washington-based lawyer for
Mr. Deripaska, Adam Waldman, inquiring about taking his client up on
the offer to testify, Mr. Waldman said in an interview.

What
happened after that has been in dispute. Mr. Waldman, who stopped
working for Mr. Deripaska after the sanctions were levied, said he
told the committee staff that his client would be willing to testify
without any grant of immunity, but would not testify about any
Russian collusion with the Trump campaign because “he doesn’t
know anything about that theory and actually doesn’t believe it
occurred.” –
NYT

In
short, Deripaska wants it known that he worked with the FBI and
DOJ, and that he had nothing to do with the Steele dossier.

Today,
Deripaska is banned anew from the United States, one of several
Russians sanctioned in April by the Trump administration as a way to
punish Putin for 2016 election meddling. But he wants to be clear
about a few things, according to a statement provided by his
team.
First,
he did collude with Americans in the form of voluntarily assisting
and meeting with the FBI, the DOJ and people such as Ohr between 2009
and 2016.

He
also wants Americans to know
he
did not cooperate or assist with Steele’s dossier, and he tried to
dispel the FBI notion that Russia and the Trump campaign colluded
during the 2016 election
.
The
Hill

Interestingly,
Steele’s dossier which was partially funded by the Clinton campaign,
relied on
senior
Kremlin officials
.

It
would be most helpful if the Department of Justice could please
investigate and then prosecute themselves and/or members of the
previous administration, so that journalists like John Solomon,
Sara Carter, Luke Rosiak, Chuck Ross and others don’t have to
continue to break stories that are seemingly ignored by all but a
handful of Congressional investigators.

In

In

Mainstream
Media Finally Concedes Defeat on Yemen, Ends Blackout Of Coverage

(CJ Opinion) — Last
month, an
article
by Fair.org
 went
viral in republications by popular alternative media outlets ranging
from
Salon to Zero
Hedge
 to Alternet to Truthdig,
among many others. The article was initially titled “ACTION ALERT:
It’s Been Over a Year Since MSNBC Has Mentioned US War in Yemen”,
but many subsequent republications went with variations on the more
attention-grabbing headline, “MSNBC has done 455 Stormy Daniels
segments in the last year — but none on U.S. war in Yemen”.

The
centerpiece of the article was the following graphic, which I saw
shared on its own many times in my social media feeds:

That’s
about as in your face as it gets, isn’t it?

Ever
since the Saudi-led assault on Yemen began in March of 2015,
alternative media outlets everywhere have
been
repeatedly and aggressively decrying the
mainstream media
 in
the US
and
UK
 for
their
spectacular
failure
 to
adequately and
accurately
cover the violence
 and humanitarian
disaster
 with appropriate
reporting on who is responsible for it
.
After the 2016 US election, journalist Michael Tracey
wrote
an essay
 documenting
how throughout the entire year and a half that Americans were
pummeled with updates from the mass media about candidates and their
campaigns, not one single question about Yemen was ever asked by any
mainstream outlet of any candidate.

This
is of course outrageous, but because of how media coverage works,
mainstream attention was never drawn to the problem. It hasn’t been
total media
blackout, but because it only turns up in mainstream media reports
every once in a while with little if any emphasis being placed on who
is behind the devastation, it occupies a very peripheral place in
western consciousness. The average American would probably be able to
tell you that some parts of their government appear to be concerned
about Russia, Syria, Iran and North Korea, because those rival
nations have been the subject of intense mass media coverage, but if
you asked them about Yemen you’d likely be told something like “I
think there’s some kind of humanitarian crisis there?”, if
anything.

This
has all changed in the last few days. Suddenly, the atrocities being
inflicted upon the people of Yemen are being pushed into mainstream
attention by the mass media outlets which have been ignoring them for
more than three years. The
Washington
Post
 (WaPo) editorial
board
published
an op-ed
 titled
“End U.S. support for this misbegotten and unwinnable war”. CNN
did some actual, real journalism for a change with a
viral
exclusive
 documenting
which American war profiteers were behind some of the more
devastating Saudi bombings. And yes, MSNBC finally did cover the
violence in Yemen, breaking its year-long silence to
report
on a US-supplied bomb
 which
killed 40 children with such urgent condemnation of those responsible
you’d never know they’d been consistently ignoring such incidents
which have been going on for years.

Now politicians and celebrities everywhere
are shoving the horror of their government facilitating the slaughter
of innocents into mainstream attention.

Astonishing graphic from @CNN, identifying civilian massacres in Yemen with the bomb makers – Raytheon, Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics. This should be standard in war reporting. Searing images. https://www.cnn.com/2018/08/17/middleeast/us-saudi-yemen-bus-strike-intl/index.html

You know the world has been turned upside down when the Washington Post editorial board opposes a US military intervention https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/global-opinions/end-us-support-for-this-misbegotten-and-unwinnable-war/2018/08/18/35a1f256-a249-11e8-93e3-24d1703d2a7a_story.html

Opinion | End U.S. support for this misbegotten and unwinnable war

Whether the United States enabled the killing of 40 Yemeni children makes a world of difference.

washingtonpost.com

What’s
interesting here is that nothing at all has changed except for the
coverage. US-supplied bombs have been dropping
on
marketplaceshospitals and funerals and slaughtering
civilians
 in
far more deadly incidents for years, and the US has also
been
providing
extensive assistance
 to
Saudi airstrikes, as well as
attacking Yemeni
targets
directly.
The only thing that has changed is that now it’s being reported
with an urgency and volume that is appropriate for such a horrific
incident instead of an occasional low-profile mention with little or
no mention of responsibility.

Nobody
with their eyes open believes that the mainstream media have just
suddenly developed a conscience and now deeply care about the mass
murder of Middle Eastern civilians. So why the change? If you ask
some of the Trump supporters I’ve seen responding to the shift,
it’s because their president can now be unfairly blamed for a
military campaign which began long before he took office. But that
doesn’t really hold water, does it? I mean, the aforementioned year
in which MSNBC didn’t cover Yemen took place entirely during this
administration, and every American with cable TV knows that MSNBC
markets itself as the anti-Trump network. If they’d wanted to use
Yemen as another angle from which to criticize this administration
they would have done so, instead of not doing so at all. The entirety
of mainstream media have been grossly neglecting this issue up until
the last week despite having every opportunity to condemn Trump for
it.

For
the record, while we’re on the subject, I personally don’t much
care if Trump gets all the blame for the Yemen catastrophe at this
point. I’ve spent 2017 and 2018 fighting the insane corporate
liberal notion that all American depravity began in January of last
year, but at this point I’m happy with literally anything that just
ends the death and devastation. A year into the war, the 30-year CIA
veteran Bruce Riedel
said that
“if the United States of America and the United Kingdom tonight
told King Salman that this war has to end, it would end tomorrow,
because the Royal Saudi Air Force cannot operate without American and
British support.” If using this as an opportunity to attack Trump
creates the necessary political pressure to end the bombings,
blockades, starvation and disease that is killing untold thousands of
Yemeni civilians, then fine, whatever, I’m all for it.

But
again, from what I’m seeing right now I don’t believe that this
is about Trump. Not directly anyway. From what I can see right now, I
think what we are witnessing is a clear instance in which alternative
media successfully caused the establishment to lose control of the
narrative on an important issue.

In
the US, criticism of Saudi Arabia is nearly as taboo as criticism of
Israel. As we saw explained in a
leaked
State Department memo
 last
year, it is standard US policy to use human rights abuses as a
bludgeon with which to attack rival governments, while sweeping the
atrocities committed by allies under the rug. Because of
its
lucrative
petrodollar deal
 with
the US, and because its opaque and unaccountable monarchy makes it
capable of nefarious maneuvers to advance geopolitical agendas that
an ostensible democracy would have a hard time getting away with, the
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is one of America’s most important allies.
And the plutocrat-owned media, whose controllers have a vested
interest in protecting the establishment upon which their kingdoms
are built, consistently fall right in line with that same State
Department policy.

This,
and the fact that the
control
of a key strategic region
 is
at stake, is why we’ve been seeing the Saudi war crimes in Yemen
and the US facilitation thereof downplayed for years by the mass
media. And they would surely remain downplayed indefinitely were it
possible.

But
it wasn’t possible. The story kept getting pushed toward mainstream
consciousness year after year, and eventually the fact that an outlet
which upholds itself as the flag bearer of Trump’s opposition has
been completely ignoring this administration’s facilitation of war
crimes was made viral. At a certain point a Dem-voting audience which
is being told day in and day out that Trump presents a unique and
unprecedented level of danger to the world will lose trust in the
outlets which market themselves to that demographic if they refuse to
make a big deal about the fact that this administration is helping
tyrants murder busloads of children.

Jim Carrey

@JimCarrey

40 innocent children killed on a bus in Yemen.

Our ally.

Our missile.

Our crime.

For
this reason, western mainstream media have been forced to finally
report on the cruelty being inflicted upon the people of Yemen by
Saudi Arabia and its allies in order to avoid losing credibility. The
story got out, and the story about their lack of coverage of that
story got out, and now they’re all reporting on it like they’ve
been doing so this entire time. Which, if it continues, will make it
very difficult for the US/UK/Saudi war machine to retain the consent
of the governed for its mass slaughter.

In
my opinion, we can safely call this a win for alternative media. The
voices who aren’t beholden to the empire and its geopolitical
agendas refused to let this story die, and eventually succeeded in
overtaking the dominant narrative. Not because media-controlling
oligarchs like Brian L Roberts and Jeff Bezos gave them permission
to, but because unauthorized truth was spoken and carried by many
ordinary people into mainstream consciousness via Facebook shares,
Twitter retweets and speaking out loud and proud wherever possible. A
people’s information battle was fought and won by the people.

If
things go as I am hoping they will go, we will see more and more such
populist hijackings of dominant narratives in the future, and
ultimately a failure of the oligarchs to continue manufacturing
consent for their omnicidal, ecocidal, Orwellian agendas. We will
have to be aggressive, we will have to be creative, and we will have
to be interesting enough to catch the eye of the casual citizenry,
but the fact that trust in the mass media is at an all-time low and
our ability to network and share information is at an all-time high
combines with the fact that we have truth on our side to create some
very exciting possibilities. I find this all very encouraging.

Over

Lula da Silva in Brazilie.

socialistische president Evo Morales).

Niets

Nicaragua’s
Failed Coup: What You’re Not Being Told

While
the international pressure continues, by mid-July it became clear
that, for the time being at least, the opposition in Nicaragua no
longer has sufficient local support to achieve its goal.

(OD Op-ed) — For
three months Daniel Ortega and his government in Nicaragua were under
intense pressure to resign – from protesters and opposition groups,
from local media and from right-wing politicians in the US. But by
mid-July it became clear that, despite persistent images of
near-collapse painted by the international press, the country appears
to be returning to something close to normality. How did a protest
that seemed so strong when it began, lose momentum so quickly?

Daniel
Ortega has been in power since 2007, in the last election won 72% of
the vote and until recently was running high in independent opinion
polls. Despite this, a casual reader of the national and
international media would get the impression that he’s deeply
despised.

In
Open Democracy, the international protest group
SOS
Nicaragua
 calls
him a “tyrant hell-bent on the bloody repression of the nation.”
His local detractors agree. For example, on July 10 Vilma Núñez, a
longstanding opponent of Ortega’s who was originally his ally, told
the BBC that he is rolling out an “extermination plan” for
Nicaragua.

When
rebels briefly held one of Nicaragua’s cities a few weeks ago,
their leaders said they had ended “eleven years of repression”.
SOS Nicaragua even claims that Ortega is a “more hated and more
long-lived tyrant than Nicaragua’s former dictator” (Anastasio
Somoza and his family, who ruled Nicaragua ruthlessly for more than
40 years).

A
casual glance at social media will show that plenty of people share
these views, and at the peak of the opposition’s popularity they
clearly had considerable traction. But the opposition’s first
mistake might have been its overblown rhetoric, as people began to
question whether it squared with their own perceptions.

For
example, until April this year, Nicaragua was the second safest
country in Latin America despite also being one of the poorest. Its
police were renowned for their community-based methods in which
(unlike in the “northern triangle” countries of Honduras, El
Salvador and Guatemala) killings by police officers were a rarity.
Drugs-related crime was at a minimum and the violent gangs found in
neighbouring countries didn’t exist.

Of
course the police weren’t perfect, but people could safely report
problems such as domestic violence without expecting a violent
response from police themselves. Yet the same police are now labelled
“assassins” by the opposition and blamed for the majority of the
deaths since the protests started.

No
one has questioned how a force with a record of limited violence was
transformed overnight into ruthless murderers, supposedly capable of
torture and even of killing children.

That
there have been violent deaths in the past three months is not in
doubt.

Bloomberg repeated
the claim
 from
local human rights groups that 448 had died by the end of July.
However, a detailed analysis of those reported in the first two
months of the crisis showed how the numbers were being manipulated.
By then nearly 300 deaths had been recorded by the two main human
rights organisations or by the Inter-American Human Rights
Commission.

A
claim made right from the beginning by the protesters was that they
were either unarmed or at best had only homemade weapons to
protect themselves. Again, the international media were convinced.
But local people could see otherwise.

case-by-case
analysis
 showed
that of those listed only about 120 were definitely attributable to
the protests, with many unrelated to the events or having unclear
causes, or involved bystanders or resulted from double-counting.
Of course, the exaggerated picture is still held in many people’s
minds (only the other day someone told my wife that “hundreds of
students have been killed”), but many others have gradually
realised that no
massacre
has in fact occurred.

In
an important respect the opposition succeeded. They created what
The
Guardian
 calls
“a widespread and growing consensus within the international
community that Nicaragua’s government is in fact largely
responsible for the bloodshed.” While human rights NGOs repeat the
message that the police and security forces (in
Amnesty
International’s words
)
“shoot to kill”, the people themselves mostly know otherwise.
Whatever the provenance of the deaths in the April protests, recent
victims have often been government supporters or the police
themselves.

In
an
analytic
interview
,
Nils McCune explained to journalist Max Blumenthal how the opposition
violence grew and Sandinistas were persecuted. Examples include a
little reported incident on July 12, in which opposition gunmen
killed four police and a schoolteacher in the small town of Morrito,
kidnapping nine others.

On
July 15, protesters captured a policeman from Jinotepe while he was
on his way home, tortured him and burnt his body. Of the deaths
verified in the analysis above, about half are of government
officials, police or Sandinista supporters. On August 4 there was a
massive march in Managua of government supporters calling for justice
for these deaths, which are little reported internationally.

A
claim made right from the beginning by the protesters was that they
were either unarmed or at best had
only
homemade weapons to protect themselves
.
Again, the international media were convinced. But local people could
see otherwise. The dangerous homemade mortars were soon being
supplemented by more serious weapons. In the places where the
protesters rested control of the streets, AK47s and other arms were
being carried openly.

This
was not surprising, as what started as mainly a student protest
quickly changed to one in which trouble-makers were recruited from
outside. There were reports from various cities of youths being paid
to man the barricades; in some cases, more serious criminals became
involved.

One
of the student leaders of the protest, Harley Morales,
admitted on
June 10 that they had lost touch with what was happening on the
streets. It was increasingly clear to local people that the coup
attempt was leading to danger and insecurity of a kind they hadn’t
experienced for years.

An
initially successful element of the opposition’s campaign was
building road blocks (“tranques”) on city streets and on the
country’s half-dozen main highways. At one point the country was
effectively paralysed and the government was forced to demand the
lifting of the tranques before it would continue with the “national
dialogue” aimed at resolving the crisis (hosted by Catholic bishops
and involving both opposition and government supporters).

If
the opposition had been sensible, it would have taken the government
at its word, lifted the blockades and insisted that the dialogue
proceed at pace. But either it was hooked on the power that the
blockades had given it, or it couldn’t control those who were
manning them. As well as simply being intimidating for local people
to cross and very disruptive for local businesses, by this stage the
tranques were the main focus of violence.

They
quickly turned from being an opposition asset to being the main
reason why people wanted a quick return to “normality” (a plea
frequently heard in the streets). In the space of only a week or two,
the opposition lost perhaps the best chance it had to influence the
outcome of the crisis. When police and paramilitaries finally moved
in to clear the tranques, people were out celebrating
in
LeonCarazo and Masaya.

Another
area in which the opposition wasted its initial gains was in use of
social media. The starting point for the crisis was a forest fire in
one of the country’s remote reserves. The opposition accused the
government of ignoring the fire and turning down offers of help to
fight it. By the time these were shown to be false, attention had
moved on to a much more inflammatory issue, reforms to the social
security system.

The
strength and pace of the protests were fuelled by a stream of real
and fake news, principally via Facebook. Of course government
supporters were doing the same, but the opposition proved far more
effective.

Again,
there were distorted messages both about the reforms themselves and
the subsequent protests. In perhaps the first example of mass
manipulation of social media in Nicaragua since smartphones became
widely available a couple of years ago, the strength and pace of the
protests were fuelled by a stream of real and fake news, principally
via Facebook. Of course government supporters were doing the same,
but the opposition proved far more effective.

Any
death was of a protester. Scenes were staged of tearful students
uttering their “last messages” while under fire or people
“confessing” to doing the government’s dirty work. While
manipulation by the government side was more obvious and less
sophisticated, many people became sceptical about what they saw on
their phones and began to place more trust in their own experiences.

As
the opposition became more desperate, social media took a turn for
the worse, with instructions to track down and kill government
“toads” (“zapos”), leading to the victimising and
even
torturing
 of
government workers and supporters.  The intolerance has spread
to the US and Europe, with SOS Nicaragua members shouting down anyone
speaking about Nicaragua who does not support their line (as happened
in early August in
San
Francisco
).

Yet
another opposition tactic that misfired was in calling strikes. That
these came about was due to big business, which for long was happy to
live with the Ortega government but was called to action by the US
ambassador in March, when she
told
them
 they
needed to get involved in politics. From day one they supported the
opposition, even at the cost of their own businesses.

But
Nicaragua is unique in Latin America in having only modest reliance
on big firms. Thanks both to the nature of its economy and support
from the Ortega government, small businesses, artesan workshops,
co-ops and small farmers have grown in number.

What’s
known as the “popular economy” contributes 64% of national
income, far higher than is the case with Nicaragua’s neighbours. As
well as being strangled by the tranques, small businesses couldn’t
cope with strikes. Some observed them (perhaps under threat) but many
did not, and the opposition lost other potential allies.

The
protest marches, tranques and strikes were all aimed at putting
pressure on the government, with the (televised) national dialogue as
the public platform. Here, the opposition not only missed its best
chance to secure reforms but its attacks misfired in other ways. It
had only one argument, repeatedly put forward, that the government
was responsible for all the deaths that were happening and must
resign forthwith.

In
other words, it didn’t really want dialogue at all. A belligerence
that found approval among its hard-core supporters was simply
off-putting to the majority of people who desperately wanted a
negotiated outcome that would end the violence. The national dialogue
now receives little attention, in part because the government has
regained control of the streets but also because it is obvious that
the opposition were using it only to insult and criticise, with no
real intention of engaging properly.

Furthermore,
instead of the Catholic church staying to one side as mediators,
their priests have again and again been found to support the
protests, so their role as neutral actors in the dialogue is no
longer credible, if it ever was.

By
aligning itself with the right wing of the US Republican party
through its well-publicised trips to Washington and Miami, and its
acceptance of US government finance, the opposition points to a
change of political direction for Nicaragua which would be anathema
to most Sandinistas and even to many of its own supporters.

By
having to speak publicly in the dialogue, the opposition has also
exposed other weaknesses. While it is united in wanting Ortega to go,
it is divided on tactics and even more fundamentally in its politics.
Whatever one thinks of the Ortega government, it can be seen to have
taken the country in a certain direction and to have accumulated many
social achievements during its eleven years in power.

What
would happen to these? Even on the issue that ostensibly began the
protests, the national social security fund, the opposition offers no
clear alternative. Worse, by aligning itself with the right wing of
the US Republican party through its well-publicised trips to
Washington and Miami, and its acceptance of US government finance
(detailed by the
Grayzone
Project
),
the opposition points to a change of political direction for
Nicaragua which would be anathema to most Sandinistas and even to
many of its own supporters.

There
is a paradox here, because a tactic which backfired in Nicaragua may
yet serve the opposition’s cause internationally and damage both
Nicaragua and the Ortega government in a different way. While for the
Trump administration Nicaragua is hardly a priority, there is
long-running resentment about the success of Sandinista governments
within the US establishment, awoken by the recent protests.

The
same establishment also sees an opportunity to attack an ally of
Venezuela’s. It has been working hard in bodies like the
Organisation of American States, aided by its new allies in the
region, to restrict Nicaragua’s support to the small number of
Latin American countries that refuse to play the US game. While the
OAS/OEA can take few concrete steps itself, it is contributing to an
image of Nicaragua among US lawmakers that may allow sanctions to be
imposed that could be very damaging to its economy and hence to its
people.

As
a result of all the opposition’s mistakes, and of the government’s
concerted action to regain control, Nicaragua’s real situation has
shifted markedly in the few weeks since mid-July. But international
commentators are failing to keep up. The New York Times, Huffington
Post, Guardian and other media continue to talk about
the
tyranny, or the
mounting political violence
,
or (in the case of Huffpost) even
the
rise of fascism
 in
Nicaragua.

In
Open Democracy, José Zepeda
claims that
“the majority of the Nicaraguan people have turned their backs on
[Ortega]”.  In Canada, the Ottawa Citizen talked about
Nicaragua
imploding.
But most of these correspondents are not in the country. In practice
the violence has slowed almost to a halt, Nicaraguan cities are clear
of barricades and normal life is being resumed. The prevailing
feeling is one of relief, and better-informed commentators have begun
to conclude that
the
attempted coup has failed
.

Of
course there are enormous challenges, and huge potential pitfalls for
a government now having to repair the country’s infrastructure with
reduced tax revenues, scarce international investment and near-zero
tourism, as well as facing open hostility from its neighbours and
possible economic sanctions by the United States. But in terms of the
strength of its core support among Nicaraguan people, Daniel Ortega’s
government may even be stronger now than it was before the crisis
began.

directe supervisie gehad over honderden bekende films.

maken via films of tv series……

410
Movies Made Under the Direct Supervision of the Pentagon

August
7, 2018 at 8:38 pm

Written
by
Tyler
Durden

(ZHE) — A
year ago we featured
a
detailed report
 by
authors Tom Secker and Matthew Alford exposing just how vast the
Pentagon and CIA programs for partnering with Hollywood actually are,
based on some 4,000 new pages of formerly classified archived
documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act.

The report
noted at the time that
 “These
documents for the first time demonstrate that the US government has
worked behind the scenes on over 800 major movies and more than 1,000
TV titles.”

Reviewing
the ever expanding list, the average movie watcher might be in for a
shock at what films are actually included
— there
are the more predictable ones like
Black
Hawk Down, Zero Dark Thirty
,
and
Lone
Survivor
;
but also
entirely
unexpected ones that apparently needed the military-industrial
complex’s propaganda touch like
Earnest
Saves Christmas
Karate
Kid 2, The Silence of the Lambs
Twister,
the
Iron
Man
movies, and
more recently
Pitch
Perfect 3
.

When
a Hollywood writer or producer approaches the Pentagon and asks for
access to military assets to help make their film, they have to
submit their script to the entertainment liaison offices for
vetting.
Ultimately,
the man with the final say is Phil Strub, the Department of Defense’s
(DOD) chief Hollywood liaison
,
who has been at the helm of this formerly semi-secret department
going all the way back to 1989.

If
there are characters, action or dialogue that the DOD doesn’t
approve of then the film-maker has to make changes to accommodate the
military’s demands. If they refuse then the Pentagon packs up its
toys and goes home. To obtain full cooperation the producers have to
sign contracts, called Production Assistance Agreements, which
lock
them into using a military-approved version of the script
.

David Sirota

@davidsirota

The Pentagon directly influences Hollywood — in some cases, scripts are literally line edited by the military. Part of my last book was all about this — I call it the Military-Entertainment Complex. Read this WashPost piece I did summarizing the situation: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/25-years-later-remembering-how-top-gun-changed-americas-feelings-about-war/2011/08/15/gIQAU6qJgJ_story.html

Boots Riley

@BootsRiley

Here’s a list. Find a bunch of war movies that Department of Defense helped develop, but also find superhero movies and “apolitical” movies too. https://twitter.com/MrJames_Casey/status/1025703827624914948

Months
ago, Strub was again profiled in a report called
Elisting
an Audience: How Hollywood Peddles Propaganda
,
which quoted him trying to push back against the growing media
exposure over the past year:
We’re
not trying to brainwash people! We’re out to present the clearest,
truest view,”
 Strub
told
The
Outline
.

The
report rightly noted that while Americans generally pride themselves
on living in a free speech anti-censorship society, while
simultaneously mocking the propaganda examples in places like Russia
or China, the US public is subject to more homegrown
state-run
propaganda than it thinks
:

Military
pageantry in Russia, massive rallies in North Korea, blunt messaging
from China.
We
cluck at shameless self-aggrandizing when we see it overseas. But it
doesn’t take much effort to see that American propaganda is
everywhere, too.
 It’s
not government-made, and it’s not quite as brazen as its
counterpart from abroad. But it’s here, and to ignore that a piece
of content is, at its core, propaganda — especially these days,
while Trump openly pines for grand army parades — is a mistake.
“There’s all kinds of ways to make an ideological point,”
Harris added.
Sometimes
I do think we’re not attuned enough. We do not look hard enough for
propaganda.”

And
what’s more, unlike in authoritarian systems, in the West it is the
consumers that are actually willing, if perhaps unwitting,
participants in state propaganda.
The
Outline
report continues:

Certainly,
the content has alternative, sincere agendas, too, but it’s the
giant, amorphous market of consumers that has called it forth. That’s
the difference between our propaganda and everyone else’s.
In
autocratic regimes, a government-backed entity pushes it onto
indifferent or unwilling consumers. In America, we, the consumers,
happily demand it.

Want
to see what Hollywood films
— some
recent and some going back decades
— that
you’ve seen but were unaware had the US Department of Defense’s
official imprimatur?

Below
is a
 merely
partial list
 of
films in alphabetical order that had Pentagon involvement either
during the script or production phase
,
according to declassified US government documents. Amazingly the list
of 410 movies is but half of the total number (for example,
Zero
Dark Thirty
and
some other prominent ones are not on there) and was
compiled by the FOIA investigative website

Overigens

SUBJECT:
Intelligence
on Iran Fails the Smell Test

Mr.
President:

As
the George W. Bush administration revved up to attack Iraq 15 years
ago, we could see no compelling reason for war.  We decided,
though, to give President Bush the benefit of the doubt on the chance
he had been sandbagged by Vice President Dick Cheney and others.
We chose to allow for the possibility that he actually believed the
“intelligence” that Colin Powell presented to the UN as providing
“irrefutable and undeniable” proof of WMD in Iraq and a “sinister
nexus” between Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda.

To
us in VIPS it was clear, however, that the “intelligence” Powell
adduced was bogus.  Thus, that same afternoon (Feb. 5, 2003) we
prepared and sent to President Bush a Memorandum like this
one,
urging him to seek counsel beyond the “circle of those advisers
clearly bent on a war for which we see no compelling reason and from
which we believe the unintended consequences are likely to be
catastrophic.”

We
take no satisfaction at having been correct — though disregarded —
in predicting the political and humanitarian disaster in Iraq. Most
Americans have been told the intelligence was “mistaken.” It was
not; it was out-and-out fraud, in which, sadly, some of our former
colleagues took part.

Five
years after Powell’s speech, the Chair of the Senate Intelligence
Committee minced few words in announcing the main bipartisan finding
of a five-year investigation. He
said
“In making the case for war, the Administration repeatedly
presented intelligence as fact when in reality it was
unsubstantiated, contradicted, or even non-existent.  As a
result, the American people were led to believe that the threat from
Iraq was much greater than actually existed.”

Iran
Now in Gunsight

As
drums beat again for a military attack — this time on Iran, we
Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity and other experienced,
objective analysts are, by all appearances, being disregarded again.
And, this time, we fear the consequences will be all-caps
CATASTROPHIC — in comparison with the catastrophe of Iraq.

In
memoranda to you over the past year and a half we have
pointed
out
 that
(1) Iran’s current support for international terrorism is far short
of what it was decades ago; and (2) that you are being played by
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s claims about Iran’ they are
based on intelligence exposed as fraudulent several years ago.
Tellingly, Netanyahu waited for your new national security adviser to
be in place for three weeks before performing his April 30 slide
show alleging that Iran has a covert nuclear weapons program.
On the chance that our analysis of Netanyahu’s show-and-tell failed
to reach you, please know that the Israeli prime minister was
recycling information from proven forgeries, which we reported in a
Memorandum to you early last spring.

If
our
Memorandum of May
7 fell through some cracks in the West Wing, here are its main
findings:

The
evidence displayed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
on April 30 in what he called his “Iranian atomic
archive” showed blatant signs of fabrication. That evidence is
linked to documents presented by the Bush Administration more than a
decade earlier as “proof” of a covert Iran nuclear weapons
program. Those documents were clearly fabricated, as well.

In
our May 7, 2018 Memorandum we also asserted: “We can prove that the
actual documents originally came not from Iran but from Israel.
Moreover, the documents were never authenticated by the CIA or the
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).”

Iran:
Almost Targeted in 2008

There
was a close brush with war with Iran a decade ago.  Bush and
Cheney, in close consultation with Israel, were planning to attack
Iran in 2008, their last year in office.  Fortunately, an honest
National Intelligence Estimate of November 2007 concluded that Iran
had stopped working on a nuclear weapon in 2003, and that key
judgment was made public.  Abruptly, that NIE stuck an iron rod
into the wheels of the juggernaut then speeding downhill to war.

The
key judgment that Iran had stopped work on a nuclear weapon was the
result of the painstakingly deliberative process that was customarily
used, back in the day, to produce an NIE. After that process —
which took a full year —  the Nov. 2007 NIE was was approved
unanimously by all U.S. intelligence agencies.

(In
other words, it was decidedly NOT a rump “assessment” like the
one cobbled together in a couple of weeks by “handpicked”
analysts from three selected, agenda-laden agencies regarding Russian
meddling. We refer, of course, to the evidence-impoverished and
deceptively labeled “Intelligence Community Assessment” that the
directors of the FBI, CIA, and NSA gave you on January 6, 2017. The
Defense Intelligence Agency and the State Department intelligence
bureau were among the other 13 agencies excluded from that
“Intelligence Community Assessment.”)

As
for the Bush/Cheney plans for attacking Iran in 2008, President
George W. Bush, in his autobiography, Decision Points,
recorded his chagrin at what he called the NIE’s “eye-popping”
intelligence finding debunking the conventional wisdom that Iran was
on the verge of getting a nuclear weapon.  Bush added
plaintively, “How could I possibly explain using the military to
destroy the nuclear facilities of a country the intelligence
community said had no active nuclear weapons program?”

Mr.
President, we do not know whether a fresh National Intelligence
Estimate has been produced on Iran and nuclear weapons — or, if one
has been produced, whether it is as honest as the NIE of Nov. 2007,
which helped prevent the launch of another unnecessary war the
following year.  We stand on our record.  In sum, if you
believe that there is credible evidence that Iran has an active
secret nuclear weapons program, we believe you have been misled.
And if you base decisions on misleading “intelligence” on Iran,
the inevitable result will be a great deal worse than the Bush/Cheney
debacle in Iraq.

Volgens McCraw zullen wetshandhavers

In
Refusing to Defend Assange, Mainstream Media Exposes Its True Nature

(CJ Opinion) — Last
Tuesday a top lawyer for the
New
York Times
 named
David McCraw
warned
a room full of judges
 that
the prosecution of Julian Assange for WikiLeaks publications would
set a very dangerous precedent which would end up hurting mainstream
news media outlets like NYT, the
Washington
Post
,
and other outlets which publish secret government documents.

I
think the prosecution of him would be a very, very bad precedent for
publishers,” McCraw said. “From that incident, from everything I
know, he’s sort of in a classic publisher’s position and I think
the law would have a very hard time drawing a distinction between The
New York Times and WikiLeaks.”

Do
you know where I read about this? Not in the
New
York Times
.

Curiously,
as of this writing, McCraw’s words have found no mention in
the
Times itself,”
activist Ray McGovern
wrote for
the alternative media outlet
Consortium
News
.
“In recent years, the newspaper has shown a marked proclivity to
avoid printing anything that might risk its front row seat at the
government trough.”

Consortium News@Consortiumnews

Though The New York Times itself has not reported it, it’s No. 2 lawyer told a group of judges that the prosecution of Julian Assange could have dire consequences for the Times itself, explains Ray McGovern.https://consortiumnews.com/2018/07/25/the-gray-lady-thinks-twice-about-assanges-prosecution/

So
let’s unpack that a bit. It is now public knowledge that the
Ecuadorian government is actively seeking to turn Assange over to be
arrested by the British government. This was initially
reported
by RT
,
then independently
confirmed
by
The
Intercept
,
and is today full mainstream public knowledge being reported by
mainstream outlets like
CNN.
It is also public knowledge that Assange’s asylum was granted by
the Ecuadorian government
due
to a feared attempt to extradite him
 to
the United States and
prosecute
him for WikiLeaks publications
.
Everyone from President
Donald
Trump
 to
Attorney General
Jeff
Sessions
 to
now-Secretary of State
Mike
Pompeo
 to
ranking House Intelligence Committee member
Adam
Schiff
 to
Democratic
members
of the US Senate
 have
made public statements clearly indicating that there is a US
government interest in getting Assange out of the shelter of
political asylum and into prison.

The New
York Times
 is
aware of this, and as evidenced by McCraw’s comments it is also
aware of the dangerous precedent that such a prosecution would set
for all news media publications. The
New
York Times
 editorial
staff are aware that the US government prosecuting a publisher for
publishing important documents that had been hidden from the public
would make it impossible for the
Times to
publish the same kind of material without fear of the same legal
repercussions. It is aware that the maneuvers being taken against
Assange present a very real existential threat to the possibility of
real journalism and holding power to account.

You
might think, therefore, that we’d be seeing a flood of analyses and
op-eds from the
New
York Times
 aggressively
condemning any movement toward the prosecution of Julian Assange. You
might expect all media outlets in America to be constantly sounding
the alarm about this, especially since the threat is coming from the
Trump administration, which outlets like the
New
York Times
are
always eager to circulate dire warnings about. You might expect every
talking head on CNN and NBC to be ominously citing Assange as the
clearest and most egregious case yet of Trump’s infamous “war on
the free press”. Leaving aside the issues of morality, compassion
and human rights that come with Assange’s case, you might think
that if for no other reason than sheer unenlightened self interest
they’d be loudly and aggressively defending him.

And
yet, they don’t. And the fact that they don’t shows us what they
really are.

Belinda Noakes@belindanoakes

A fine piece of work. I see a handful of international journalists brave enough to write about this. Where are the others? Can they not see that if Assange is persecuted to death, they’re next?

Replying to @belindanoakes

They’re not next. Very few will ever publish anything substantive enough to generate serious blowback.

Theoretically,
journalism is meant to help create an informed populace and hold
power to account. That’s why it’s the only profession explicitly
named in the United States Constitution, and why freedom of the press
has enjoyed such constitutional protections throughout US
history. The press today is failing to protect Julian Assange
because it has no intention of creating an informed populace or
holding power to account.

This
is not to suggest the existence of some grand, secret conspiracy
among US journalists. It’s just a simple fact that plutocrats own
most of the US news media and hire the people who run it, which has
naturally created an environment where the best way to advance one’s
career is to remain perpetually inoffensive to the establishment upon
which plutocrats have built their respective empires. This is why you
see ambitious reporters on Twitter falling all over themselves to be
the first with a pithy line that advances establishment agendas
whenever breaking news presents an opportunity to do so; they are
aware that their social media presence is being assessed by potential
employers and allies for establishment loyalism. This also why so
many of those aspiring journalists attack Assange and WikiLeaks
whenever possible.

Everyone
hoping to gain admission to the cultural elite must now strenuously
cultivate their social media so as to avoid controversy,”
journalist Michael Tracey
observed recently.
“Eventually they will internalize controversy-avoidance as a
virtue, not a societal imposition. Result: a more boring, conformist
elite culture.”

A
great way for an aspiring journalist to avoid controversy is to
never, ever defend Assange or WikiLeaks on social media or in any
media outlet, and certainly under no circumstances allow yourself to
look like the sort of journo who might someday publish the sorts of
materials that WikiLeaks publishes. An excellent way to prove
yourself is to become yet another author of yet another one of the
many, many smear pieces that have been written about Assange and
WikiLeaks.

Why Americans Need to Defend Julian Assange’s Freedom

commondreams.org

Mainstream
media outlets and those who thrive within them have no intention of
rocking the boat and losing their hard-earned privilege and access.
Conservative mass media will continue to defend the US president, and
liberal media will continue to defend the CIA and the FBI. Both will
help advance war, ecocide, military expansionism, surveillance and
police militarization, and none will leak anything that is damaging
to the power structures that they have learned to serve. They will
remain innocuous, uncontroversial defenders of the rich and powerful
at all times.

Meanwhile,
alternative media outlets are defending Assange ferociously. Just
today I’ve seen articles from
Consortium
News
World
Socialist Website
Disobedient
Media
Antiwar and Common
Dreams
 decrying
the persecution of the most important government transparency
advocate living today. Alternative media outlets and independent
writers aren’t bound by establishment servitude, so the value of
WikiLeaks is clear as day. One’s eyes are only blinded to the
pernicious behaviors of power when power is signing one’s paycheck.

Mass
media outlets in America and around the world have fully discredited
themselves with their failure to defend a publisher who actually
holds power to account and brings facts into the light of truth to
create an informed populace. Every day that goes by where they don’t
unequivocally condemn any attempt to prosecute Assange is another day
in the pile of evidence that corporate media outlets serve power and
not truth. Their silence is a tacit admission that they are nothing
other than stenographers and propagandists for the most powerful
forces on earth.

Russiagate
Is Like 9/11, Except It’s Made of Pure Narrative

July

Written

Caitlin
Johnstone

(CJ Opinion) — The
last few days have been truly amazing. I didn’t even write an
article yesterday; I’ve just been staring transfixed by my social
media feeds watching liberal Americans completely lose their minds. I
can’t look away. It’s like watching a slow motion train wreck,
and everyone on the train is
being
really homophobic
.

I’ve
been writing about Russiagate since it started, and I can honestly
say this is the worst it’s ever been, by far. The most hysterical,
the most shrill, the most emotional, the most cartoonishly
over-the-top and hyperbolic. The fact that Trump met with Putin in
private and then publicly expressed doubt about the establishment
Russia narrative has sent some political factions of America into an
emotional state that is indistinguishable from what you’d expect if
Russia had bombed New York City. This despite the fact that the
establishment Russia narrative consists of no actual, visible events
whatsoever. It is made of pure narrative.

Michael Tracey

@mtracey

I don’t think the US media has ever been nuttier than they are right now. It would be comical if it wasn’t so dangerous. They are harming the national psyche in a profound way

I
don’t even know where to start. Everyone has been completely mad
across the entire spectrum of what passes for America’s political
“left” today, from the usual suspects like Chuck Schumer and
Nancy Pelosi and their indistinguishable Never-Trump Republican
allies, all the way to supposedly progressive commentators like Cenk
Uygur and Shaun King. Comparing this pure narrative non-event to
Pearl Harbor is now commonplace and mainstream. I just watched a
United States Senator named Richard Blumenthal stare right into the
camera refer to the hypothetical possibility of future Russian cyber
intrusions as “this 9/11 moment.”

We
are in a 9/11 national emergency because our country is under attack,
literally,” Blumenthal
told
CNN
 while
demanding a record of Trump’s meeting with Putin at the Helsinki
summit. “That attack is ongoing and pervasive, verified by
objective and verifiable evidence. Those words are, again, from the
director of National Security. And this 9/11 moment demands that we
do come together.”

Nothing
about the establishment Russia narrative is in any way verifiable,
and the only thing it has in common with 9/11 is the media coverage
and widespread emotional response.

September
11 had actual video footage of falling towers. You could go visit New
York City, look at the spot where those towers used to be, and see
them not being there anymore. You could learn the names of the people
who died and visit their graves and talk to their family members.

Exactly how it
happened is a matter of some debate in many circles, but there is no
question that it happened. There was an actual event that did happen
in the real world, completely independent of any stories people tell
about that event.

Russiagate
is like 9/11, but with none of those things. It’s like if 9/11 had
all the same widespread emotional responses, all the same nonstop
mass media coverage, all the same punditry screaming war, war, war,
except no actual event occurred. The towers were still there,
everyone was still alive, and nothing actually happened apart from
the narrative and the emotional responses to that narrative.

Russiagate
is 9/11 minus 9/11.

This
is what I’m talking about when I say that
whoever
controls the narrative controls the world
.
Whoever controls the stories that westerners are telling each other
has the power to advance concrete agendas which reshape global
geopolitics without any actual thing even happening. Simply by
getting
a
few hand-picked intelligence agents
 to
say something happened in a relatively confident way, you can get the
entire media and political body advancing that narrative as
unquestionable fact, and from there advance sanctions, new military
operations, a far more aggressive Nuclear Posture Review, the casting
out of diplomats, the arming of Ukraine, and ultimately shove Russia
further and further off the world stage.

As we
discussed last time
,
the current administration has actually been far more aggressive
against Russia than the previous administration was, and has worked
against Russian interests to a far greater extent. If they wanted to,
the international alliance of plutocrats and intelligence/defense
agencies could just as easily use their near-total control of the
narrative to advance the story that Trump is a dangerous Russia hawk
who is imperiling the entire world by inflicting insane escalations
against a nuclear superpower. They could elicit the exact same
panicked emotional response that they are eliciting right now using
the exact same media and the exact same factual situation. They
wouldn’t have to change a single thing except where they place
their emphasis in telling the story. The known facts would all remain
exactly as they are; all that would have to change is the narrative.

Public
support for Russiagate depends on the fact that most people don’t
recognize how pervasively their day-to-day experience is dominated by
narrative. If you are intellectually honest with yourself, you will
acknowledge that you think about Russia a lot more now than you did
in 2015. Russia hasn’t changed any since 2015; all that has changed
is the narrative that is being told about it. And yet now the mass
media and a huge chunk of rank-and-file America now view it as a
major threat and think about it constantly. All they had to do was
talk about Russia constantly in a fearful and urgent way, and now US
liberals are convinced that Vladimir Putin is an omnipotent
world-dominating supervillain who has infiltrated the highest levels
of the US government.

If
humanity is to pull up and away from its current path toward either
ecological disaster, nuclear armageddon or Orwellian dystopia, we are
necessarily going to have to change our relationship with narrative.
As long as the way we think, vote and organize can be controlled by
the mere verbiage of the servants of power, our species will never be
able to begin operating in a sane and wholesome way. If all it
takes to make us act against our own interest is a few establishment
lackeys speaking a few words in a confident tone of voice, if mere
authoritative language can hypnotize us like a sorcerer casting
spells, we are doomed to slavery and destruction.

So
stop staring transfixed by the narratives, and begin looking at the
behavior and motives of the people advancing them instead. Stop
staring at the movie screen they’re constantly drawing your
attention to, turn around in your theater seat, and look at the
people who are running the projector. The way out of this mess is to
begin ignoring the stories we’re being hypnotized with and start
critically examining the people who are conducting the hypnosis.
Ignore the stories and stare with piercing eyes at the storytellers.
The difference between the official narrative and the actual reality
of this world is the difference between fiction and fact. Evolve
beyond.

VS senator Rand Paul stelt n.a.v.

Dictaten

We
should be aware of Russia’s perspective

Sen. Rand Paul

MICHAEL REYNOLDS/EPA-EFE

Whether or not to expand
NATO is a question that deserves debate. Would it help or hurt U.S.
national security?

Does adding countries
such as Albania and Montenegro increase our security or ensnare us in
possible regional disputes? Are we willing to risk war with Russia by
including countries that already are mired in military conflict with
Russia?

To understand what NATO
expansion does to our relations with Russia, one must at least be
aware of Russia’s perspective. Such awareness does not mean we
agree with their point of view, but rather that we are aware our
actions lead to reactions, and that NATO expansion does not occur in
a vacuum.

We once had robust and
thoughtful debate in our country over diplomacy and our desire to
avoid war. Both parties now tend to shake their fists and declare to
our adversaries: “Take this sanction.”
“Take this expansion of
NATO.” “Take this travel restriction” — under the misguided
notion our unilateral actions will lead to capitulation.

Instead, we’ve often
seen rising tensions, increased nationalism and a ratcheting up of a
Cold War-like fever.

There was a time when
many cautioned against reckless expansion.

OUR
VIEW:
 Donald
Trump’s tirades weaken NATO and please Vladimir Putin

Perhaps the most famous
diplomat of the last century, George Kennan, wrote that NATO
expansion would be a “fateful error” that would “inflame the
nationalistic, anti-Western and militaristic tendencies in Russian
opinion” and “restore the atmosphere of the cold war to East-West
relations.”

Similarly, Daniel L.
Davis, retired lieutenant colonel with Defense Priorities, said,
“Extending NATO membership to Georgia — or Ukraine, as others
advocate — in no way strengthens U.S. security, but rather
unequivocally increases America’s strategic risk.”

I prefer we think of our
interests first, and that the U.S. Senate return to being a
deliberative body on foreign policy, where ideas are considered, and
dissent is heard and debated.

Sen.
Rand Paul, R-Ky., serves on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
He was one of two senators who opposed Tuesday’s nonbinding motion
to support and expand NATO.

‘Novitsjok-agenten’ geïdentificeerd als Russen omdat een paar Russen GB bezochten…… ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha!

Vanmorgen

Over

A
Tale of Two Poisonings

Shaping
a story to fit the agenda

By
Philip Giraldi

July
18, 2018 “Information
Clearing House
”
–  Poisoning
enemies has a long history with Augustus Caesar’s wife Livia
allegedly a master of the art, as were the Borgias in Renaissance
Italy. Lately there has been a resurgence in allegations regarding
the use of poisons of various types by several governments. The
claims are particularly damaging both morally and legally as
international conventions regard the use of poisonous chemical
compounds as particularly heinous, condemning their use because they,
when employed in quantity, become “weapons of mass destruction,”
killing indiscriminately and horribly, making no distinction between
combatants and civilians. Their use is considered to be a “war
crime” and the government officials who ordered their deployment
are “war criminals,” subject to prosecution by the International
Criminal Court in The Hague.

There
are two important poisoning stories that have made the news recently.
Both are follow-ups to reporting that has appeared in the news over
the past few months and both are particularly interesting because
they tend to repudiate earlier coverage that had been largely
accepted by several governments as well as the media and the
chattering class of paid experts that appears on television.

The
first story relates to the poisoning of former Russian intelligence
agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in March. There was quite
a bit that was odd about the Skripal case, which
relied
from the start
 “…on
circumstantial evidence and secret intelligence.” And there was
inevitably a rush to judgment. British Foreign Secretary Boris
Johnson blamed Russia less than forty-eight hours after the Skripals
were found unconscious on a bench in Salisbury England, too soon for
any chemical analysis of the alleged poisoning to have taken place.

British
Prime Minister Theresa May threw gasoline on the fire when she
addressed Parliament shortly thereafter to blame the Kremlin and
demand a Russian official response to the event in 36 hours,
declaring that the apparent poisoning was “very likely” caused by
a made-in-Russia nerve agent referred to by its generic name
novichok. The British media was soon on board with a vengeance,
spreading the government line that such a highly sensitive operation
would require the approval of President Vladimir Putin himself. The
expulsion of Russian diplomats soon followed with the United States
and other countries following suit.

Repeated
requests by Russia to obtain a sample of the alleged nerve agent for
testing were rejected by the British government in spite of the fact
that a military grade nerve agent would have surely killed both the
Skripals as well as anyone else within 100 yards. As the latest
British account of the location of the alleged poison places it on
the door handle of the Scripals’ residence, the timetable element
was also unconvincing. That meant that the two would have spent three
hours, including a stop at a pub and lunch, before succumbing on a
park bench. Military grade nerve agents kill instantly.

The
head of Britain’s own chemical weapons facility Porton Down
even
contradicted claims
 made
by May, Foreign Minister Boris Johnson, and British Ambassador in
Moscow Laurie Bristow. The lab’s Chief Executive Gary Aitkenhead
testified that he did not know if the nerve agent was actually
produced in Russia, a not surprising observation as the chemical
formula was revealed to the public in a scientific paper in 1992 and
there are an estimated twenty countries capable of producing it.
There are also presumed stocks of novichok remaining in independent
countries that once were part of the Soviet Union, to include
Russia’s enemy
du
jour
 Ukraine,
while a false flag operation by the British themselves, the CIA or
Mossad, is not unthinkable.

Nevertheless,
the politically weak May government, desperately seeking a formidable
foreign enemy to rally around against, insisted that Russia, almost
certainly acting under orders from Vladimir Putin himself, carried
out the killing of a former British double agent who had been
released from a Kremlin prison in a spy swap and who was no longer
capable of doing any damage to Russia. Putin apparently did all that
in spite of the fact that he had an election coming up and would be
the host of the World Cup in the summer, an event that would be an
absolute top priority to have go smoothly.

Now
there has been an actual death in Amesbury near Salisbury that has
been attributed to novichok. On June 30
th,
Charlie Rowley and Dawn Sturgess were admitted to hospital after
being found unconscious. Sturgess died eight days later. The May
government has not yet blamed it on Putin or even on a clumsy Russian
operative that might have
inadvertently
left behind
 a
vial of poison or a used syringe, though Home Secretary Sajid Javid
came close to that
when
he suggested
 that
Russia was using Britain as a “dumping ground for poisons.”
Police suggestions that the poisoned couple appear to have handled
novichok infused material of some kind before succumbing appears to
be contradicted by inability to find the actual source of the alleged
exposure.

British
government dancing around the issue notwithstanding, there have been
suggestions that the closest source of more novichok might well be
the U.K. government labs at nearby Porton Down, only seven miles from
Salisbury and Amesbury, which increases suspicion about the original
story promulgated by Downing Street. Would the British government
actually poison an expendable ex-Russian spy and his daughter to
divert attention from a domestic political problem at home? It’s
worth considering as the “blame it all on Putin narrative”
becomes even less credible.

The
second story comes from Syria, where there is also a Russian hand as
Moscow is aiding the government of Bashar al-Assad. The by now
notorious April 7, 2018 alleged chemical attack on the rebel-held
Syrian city of Douma was widely blamed by Western countries and the
mainstream media on Assad’s forces. This resulted in a decision by
U.S. President Donald Trump to order massive U.S.-led retaliatory
airstrikes against targets reportedly involved in chemical production
in and around Damascus.

Trump
blamed
“animal
Assad”
 for “using
nerve agents”
 and
both the media and most European governments followed that line,
concluding that Damascus had ordered the chemical attacks a mere
moments after videos purporting to show scores of chemical attack
victims first surfaced from rebel sources, long before U.S.
intelligence could have made its own assessment. A 5-page
White
House assessment
 released
on April 13th, just days after the alleged attack
asserted
that sarin was used at Douma
,
claiming that “A significant body of information points to the
regime using chlorine in its bombardment of Duma, while some
additional information points to the regime also using the nerve
agent sarin.”

Independent
sources warned at the time that
not
a single neutral observer was on the ground
 to
confirm that chemical agents launched by the Syrian government had,
in fact, been used, but were ignored. All of the sources reporting
the attack were either affiliated with the rebels who occupied the
area or were not physically present in Douma.

Now,
finally, three months later, there has been a credible independent
report on what was determined about the attack through chemical
analysis of traces recovered in Douma. A preliminary report published
last Friday by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical
Weapons (OPCW) found no traces of any nerve agent like sarin at the
site. The OPCW report
states
this clearly
:
“No organophosphorous nerve agents or their degradation products
were detected in the environmental samples or in the plasma samples
taken from alleged casualties.”

This
means that the Trump Administration claimed to have details relating
to an event in a foreign country that it did not know and could not
actually confirm to be true. And it used that as a justification for
ordering an airstrike that killed people and destroyed targets in
Syria. Will the White House respond to the OPCW report and apologize,
possibly to include reparations for an unjustified attack on another
sovereign nation? Don’t hold your breath.

The
Salisbury and Douma attacks are illustrative of just what happens
when a government is prepared to dissimulate or even lie to go the
extra mile to make a case to justify preemptive action that otherwise
might be challenged. Theresa May is, unfortunately, still in power
and so is Donald Trump. In a better world an outraged public would
demand that they be thrown out of office and even possibly subjected
to the tender ministrations of the International Criminal Court in
The Hague. With power comes accountability, or at least that should
be the rule, but it is a dictum that has for some time been ignored.
Even given that, one might hope that the blunders will not be
repeated, but there is not even any assurance that either May or
Trump is much given to “lessons learned” or that a Mike Pence or
Boris Johnson would be any better. That is our tragedy.
