Ik ben meer dan gelukkig ongelijk te hebben met mijn voorspelling dat de Britse rechter de uitlevering van Julian Assange zou goedkeuren*. Zojuist in het nieuws van 14.00 u. op WDR 5 het bericht dat Assange niet mag worden uitgeleverd aan de VS!!!
Volkomen terecht stelt de rechter dat Assange zich het leven zal benemen als hij wordt uitgeleverd aan de VS, deze terreurentiteit heeft protest aangetekend tegen de uitspraak en zal in beroep gaan…… De nieuwslezer stelde plompverloren dat de VS Assange van spionage beschuldigt en dat hij levens in gevaar heeft gebracht met zijn openbaringen van (zeer ernstige oorlogsmisdaden begaan door de VS in haar al illegaal gevoerde oorlog tegen Irak, alleen dat laatste behoort al tot één van de grootste oorlogsmisdaden die een land kan begaan….)……
De nieuwsredactie van WDR 5 had al lang kunnen weten dat de VS ten eerste liegt als ze Assange van spionage beschuldigt en ten tweede dat hij mensen in gevaar zou hebben gebracht, die laatste beschuldiging is wel van een smerigheid die zelden wordt gezien en elke zich serieus nemende journalist had al jaren geleden kunnen uitzoeken dat dit een gore leugen is…… Ofwel de zogenaamde journalisten van de reguliere westerse media, zoals die van WDR 5 blijven de leugens van de VS herhalen….. Caitlin Johnstone publiceerde gisteren een artikel** waarin ze stelt dat de journalisten van die reguliere westerse (massa-) media eindelijk zijn gestopt met hun beschuldigingen aan het adres van Assange, echter ik moet zeggen dat ik daar geen bliksem van merk als ik artikelen van de Nederlandse en internationale pers lees of hoor…….
Maar wat heeft de Britse rechter een geweldige uitspraak gedaan!! Tevens gelastte rechter Vanessa Baraister de vrijlating van Assange, tot nu toe werd hij in isolatiefolter gevangen gehouden, een geestelijke en daarmee lichamelijke marteling die een mens de dood in kan drijven……. De rechter stelde dat vanwege zijn autisme het grote gevaar bestaat dat hij zich het leven zal benemen, zeker als Assange wordt uitgeleverd, tevens acht ze de gevangenhouding van Assange uitermate slecht juist vanwege dat autisme……. Je snapt het al: de VS krijgt de mogelijkheid om in beroep te gaan en daarmee is de enorme ellende voor Assange nog niet afgelopen……. Benieuwd of Assange daadwerkelijk wordt vrijgelaten, of zal Boris Johnson en zijn club misdadigers ingrijpen?
De hoogste tijd dat de zogenaamde westerse journalisten massaal de invrijheidstelling van hun gelauwerde collega eisen en laten zien dat deze uiterst onbeschofte manier om onderzoeksjournalisten het werk onmogelijk te maken niet thuishoort in ‘westerse democratieën’, maar in een politiestaat of dictatuur (zoals die in feite al in de VS bestaat, een voorbeeld dat de EU lidstaten en Groot-Brittannië vooral niet moeten volgen, al is men daar wel hard mee bezig, zo worden ook in ons land de alternatieve media op het net gecensureerd, vooral te danken aan de Coronahysterie….)….
Voor nu is de persvrijheid gered (ook voor de zogenaamd onafhankelijke reguliere westerse media), althans voor zover je nog van die vrijheid kan spreken…..
Nog toegevoegd na plaatsing: dom genoeg vergeten te melden >> de rechter heeft een foute argumentering gebruikt om Assange niet uit te leveren en in vrijheid te stellen, iets waar Caitlin Johnstone wel op wees in een bericht over deze zaak: immers het gaat hier om de vrijheid van pers, vrijheid van meningsuiting en om een zeer ernstige mensenrechtenschending, ja zelfs een misdaad tegen de menselijkheid (het gevangen zetten van een journalist en dat ook nog in isolatiefolter…..)…… Ofwel de rechter had onmiddellijk moeten zeggen dat er geen reden was om Assange onder druk te zetten, een druk zo zwaar dat hij zelfs de Ecuadoraanse ambassade in moest vluchten, immers hij deed niets anders dan z’n werk: het brengen van gedegen onderzoeksjournalistiek en dat kan nooit een misdaad zijn in een ‘normale democratie’ (wat GB noch Nederland is), ook rechter Baraister heeft alle kans gehad om zich in te lezen en de zaak te onderzoeken, kortom ze moet weten dat Assange niemand in gevaar heeft gebracht, bovendien zou juist een rechter moeten begrijpen dat het openbaren van oorlogsmisdaden van het allergrootste belang is!!! Aanstaande
maandag zal de partijdige rechter* in Groot-Brittannië (GB) oordelen
of het proces tegen Julian Assange voor uitlevering aan de VS door
kan gaan (en reken maar dat de rechter dit toe zal staan, hoe
schandalig ook…..). Direct volgend daarop is het uitermate schunnig
dat zijn collega ‘journalisten’ Assange zo hebben laten vallen en de
uitlatingen van de geheime diensten en het OM in de VS hebben herhaald (en nog herhalen) als zou Assange
een verrader zijn die ontelbare mensenlevens in gevaar zou hebben
gebracht……. Beschuldigingen waarnaar die media zelfs geen onderzoek hebben ingesteld om
te zien of die schandelijke beweringen (smerige leugens) ook maar enig hout
snijden…… Nee, die media, de reguliere westerse (massa-) media,
hebben zelfs een groot deel van de westerse volkeren overtuigd van
het ‘feit’ (de leugen) dat Assange in het gevang thuishoort……
CaitlinJohnstone heeft een artikel geschreven waarin ze middels een
aantal vergelijkingen aantoont dat het proces tegen Assange uitermate vals is, erop gericht om de bevolkingen in de
VS en Groot-Brittannië ervan te overtuigen dat er maar één
mogelijke uitkomst is: de uitlevering van Assange en zijn
veroordeling in de VS (gegarandeerd meer dan één keer levenslang).
Niet alleen dat: ook moet die bevolkingen duidelijk gemaakt worden
dat er maar één vorm van ‘journalistiek’ is, die van de al
aangehaalde reguliere media en dat alles wat daarnaast wordt gezegd
in de sociale media door de alternatieve nieuwsmedia en brengers van actualiteiten niets anders is dan nepnieuws en andere onzin, erop gericht om het
volk in het duister te houden (terwijl uiteraard juist het
tegenovergestelde het geval is, neem het proces tegen
Assange….)….
De
journalisten van de reguliere media zijn niet alleen afhankelijk van hun steenrijke eigenaars, maar ook van advertenties voor grote bedrijven en ja dan moet je niet
verwachten dat je nog enige onafhankelijkheid overhoudt…… Wat
natuurlijk niet wil zeggen dat men alles wat de westerse
regeringen doen voor zoete koek slikt, zaken als de kinderopvangtoeslagen
worden wel degelijk met veel kritiek overladen, maar ja als die media
dat niet zouden doen, zal dat bij de mediagebruiker achterdocht kweken en
dat wil je niet als neoliberaal afhankelijk mediaorgaan, dat voor de baas en grote bedrijven de neoliberale status quo moet bewaken en promoten….. Echter
als het gaat om de grote zaken in het leven zoals oorlog en vrede
wordt elke onafhankelijkheid (evenals het laatste restje objectiviteit), overboord gezet…….
Heb je twijfels over het werk van Assange, bezoek dan eens de site WikiLeaks (en nee dat is geen misdaad) en zie wat daar is gepubliceerd aan smerigheid van vooral het leger en de overheid van de VS.
Op het moment dat ik de laatste letters van dit bericht schrijf luister ik naar een journalist op CBC Radio1 (Canada) waar deze zich kwaad maakt over de gruwelijke moord door Saoedische psychopaten op Jamal Khashoggi en terecht dat deze journalist zich daar druk over maakt. Maar wat lullig dat ik tot nu toe, vanaf de moord op Khashoggi, niet één ‘journalist’ van de reguliere westerse media heb gehoord, die vertelde dat dezelfde Khashoggi jarenlang het moorddadige Saoedische regime heeft gesteund, inclusief de steun voor de openbare executies in die reli-fascistische dictatuur, soms alleen maar voor het leveren van kritiek op het koningshuis…… (en met dat koningshuis, nogmaals dat een bloedige dictatuur voert, onderhoudt ons koningshuis vriendschapsbanden…..) Trouwens ook over de genocide die dat land uitvoert in Jemen hoor je amper wat in de reguliere westerse media……. En dan durven de journalisten van die media Assange af te maken als verrader en charlatan…….

blindness to seeing. From unawareness to awareness. From the lights
in the room being off to the lights being switched on.

is no progress without clear seeing. We cannot move in the direction
of health and harmony if we cannot lucidly perceive the ways in which
we are still sick and dysfunctional. We can’t move forward if we’re

Between wanting to become aware of the various ways we are stuck so
that we can move forward, and wanting the light of awareness as far
away from our stuck points as possible.
The
struggle for our species, which is really the struggle for our very
survival, is therefore between the many who desire truth and the few
who desire confusion. We’ve got numbers and truth on our side, but
they have power, wealth, and a remarkable knack for psychological
manipulation.
We
see this struggle playing out in many ways in our world right now.
Between propaganda and those trying to learn and share the truth.
Between the push for internet censorship and the fight against it.
Between government secrecy and freedom of information. Between the
campaign to imprison WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange for exposing US
war crimes, and the campaign to free him.
Barring
a pardon, the extradition process concerning Julian Assange, will
likely drag on no matter how Baraitser rules Monday.

On
Monday January 4th a UK judge will be ruling on whether or not to
allow the process of Assange’s extradition to the United States to
move forward. It’s important for opponents of this extradition to be
aware that the fight will not end at this time; there’s still a
gruelling appeals process to go through which could
take 18 to 24 months or longer
in the likely event that the incredibly
biased judge
overseeing the case rules against Assange.
So
as we prepare for the next stage in this fight, it’s important for us
to be perfectly clear what’s at stake here.
It
is absolutely true that this case will have far-reaching implications
for press freedoms around the world. The imperial narrative managers
have been toiling for years to frame the persecution of Julian
Assange as something other than what it is, but in
reality this case is about
whether the most powerful government in the world is allowed to
extradite journalists anywhere on earth who expose its malfeasance.
Whether or not the United States should be allowed to imprison
journalists for exposing
its war crimes.
If
the US succeeds in normalizing the legality of extraditing any
journalist anywhere in the world who exposes its wrongdoing, there
will be a worldwide cooling effect on national security journalism
which will greatly impede humanity’s ability to form a lucid and
unobstructed understanding of what’s going on in the world. The
largest power structure on earth will have succeeded in not just
turning the lights off in the room, but in uninstalling the light
switch.
There
is no legal case in the world right now where the struggle for lucid
and unobstructed seeing has so much on the line. For this reason, we
really are collectively deciding the fate of our species with our
response to the prospect of Assange’s extradition.
Are
we going to allow the most powerful government on the planet to set a
legal precedent which allows it to obstruct truth around the entire
world? Or are we going to oppose this tooth and claw?
Are
we going to allow power to remain corrupt and unaccountable? Or are
we going to insist on our right to know what’s going on?
Are
we going to let them keep the lights off? Or are we going to turn
them on?
Are
we going to let the bastards lock us into an omnicidal, ecocidal
status quo while they drive us at a rapidly accelerating pace toward
extinction and dystopia? Or are we going to move toward the kind of
lucid and unobstructed perception of our situation which will allow
us to progress into a healthy world?
These
are the questions that we are in the process of answering together. I
hope we can get everyone to very seriously consider what they want
their own answer to be.

het echt progressieve deel van de VS hoopte men dat Trump in zijn
laatste weken als zittend president Julian Assange en Edward Snowden
een pardon zou geven, echter helaas is dat niet gebeurd en het zal
‘ook niet’ gebeuren. Behoorlijk dom trouwens dat men dit geloofde,
immers zowel Snowden als Assange zijn door de reguliere media in de
VS (en de rest van het westen) al jarenlang afgemaakt als verraders en dat op zo’n manier dat je van
hersenspoelen kan spreken……. Hoewel Trump deze media voor het
overgrote deel ‘fake media’ noemt, is het laatste wat hij wil dat zijn
achterban hem als vriend van verraders zal gaan zien…….
Caitlin
Johnstone schreef een kort en bondig artikel over deze zaak en gaat
verder in op de beloften die Trump deed tijdens de verkiezingsstrijd
in 2016, zoals het beëindigen van de (illegale) oorlogen die de VS
destijds voerde (‘getting the troops home’), iets waar bitter weinig
van terecht is gekomen en de VS zou nu zelfs meer troepen in het
buitenland hebben dan voor Trumps aantreden, niet zo vreemd daar
Trump het Pentagon toestemming gaf om naar eigen inzicht meer troepen
in te zetten…… Overigens, ook het aantal bommen dat werd
afgeworpen is nog weer groter dan onder Obama die George W. Bush weer
overtrof (terwijl aan Obama de Nobelprijs voor de Vrede werd toegekend…)….
Over die illegale oorlogen gesproken en zoals je al in de kop kon lezen: Trump heeft gisteren 3 oorlogsmisdadigers, die een levenslange gevangenisstraf moesten uitzitten, pardon gegeven, dus deze vreselijke moordenaars mogen naar huis, terwijl degenen die oorlogsmisdaden aan het licht brachten geen pardon krijgen en Julian Assange zelfs in isolatiefolter gevangenzit…… Mede daarom wil ik nog eens opmerken dat het journaille van de reguliere westerse (massa-) media zich de ogen uit de kop moet schamen dat ze Assange zo hebben gedemoniseerd, NB een gelauwerd collega van hen die uitstekend werk verrichtte in het openbaren van o.a. oorlogsmisdaden door VS militairen begaan, een collega die ze dagelijks zouden moeten ophemelen tezamen met de eis hem onmiddellijk vrij te laten, wat een geteisem!!! (en dat tuig heeft het gore lef om zich onafhankelijk te noemen…..)
Voorts
wijst Caitlin volkomen terecht op het feit dat Obama meer
vluchtelingen deporteerde dan Trump….. Waar Obama wordt gevierd als
groot strijder voor mensenrechten en hij zichzelf flink wat veren in
de vieze oorlogsmisdadige reet stak in het boek dat onlangs werd uitgegeven……. Met de uitgave van zijn boek heeft Obama interviews gegeven in de landen waar het valse flutboek werd uitgebracht, maar
hij wilde niet dat journalisten hem interviewden, nee bekende
schrijvers in die landen kregen deze taak….. Dat laatste was niet
voor niets, immers er zouden nog steeds journalisten kunnen zijn die
hem het vuur aan de schenen zouden hebben gelegd…… Schande dat
die schrijvers akkoord gingen met deze gang van zaken zoals de
Nederlandse broodschrijver en kakzever de luxe Tommy Wieringa, wat
overigens ook geldt voor het programma Nieuwsuur…… (Nieuwsuur van
de zogenaamd onafhankelijke partijen NOS en NTR…..)

weeks of speculation and desperate hopes that Donald Trump might be
preparing to pardon
NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden
and/or WikiLeaks
founder Julian Assange
before leaving office on January 20th, what the latest round of
presidential pardons has delivered is about as far from that as you
can conceivably imagine.
“In
an audacious pre-Christmas round of pardons, President Trump granted
clemency on Tuesday to two people convicted in the special counsel’s
Russia inquiry, four Blackwater guards convicted in connection with
the killing of Iraqi civilians and three corrupt former Republican
members of Congress,” the New
York Timesreports.
I
probably don’t need to tell my regular readers this, but a Trump
pardon for Assange and Snowden is almost certainly not in the cards.
Trump has done nothing but protect the imperial status quo the entire
time he’s been in office and a pardon for either of those heroic
government transparency advocates would be a deviation from his
established patterns unlike anything he’s ever once demonstrated
while in office. It’s good
to pressure politicians to do the right thing
even when they probably won’t, but it’s a safe bet that he won’t.

Trump’s
entire term has revealed that virtually everyone, all across the US
political spectrum, has been wrong about him. And it’s a testament to
the power of media echo chambers that for the most part they remain
just as wrong about him as they were four years ago.
To
this day, even after four years of evidence to the contrary, many on
the left still continue their
frequent claims
that Trump is a uniquely fascistic or Hitler-like president, despite
his having far
fewer deportations
than Obama had. And despite the fact that he will with absolute
certainty leave office on January 20th after losing an election.
All
sides pretended that Trump was a radical deviation from the norm, and
so did Trump, when all he actually did throughout his entire time in
office was protect the status quo just like his predecessors did. As
writer and activist Sam Husseini recently put
it,
“Trump is the opposable thumb of the establishment. He looks
like he’s on the opposite side, but he just helps it grab more.”

After
four years everyone–left, right and center–has been proven wrong
about Trump. He was neither a uniquely evil monster (he was
indisputably not even as bad as Bush), nor a populist hero draining
the swamp and fighting for the common man against the Deep State.
In
actuality Trump’s term has clearly established what he really was
this entire time: he was a US president. Better than some, worse than
others, but also deeply awful all around since he voluntarily served
as the face of the most evil and destructive force on earth, namely
the United States government. He was the same kind of monster as his
predecessors.
Trump
was a US president of fairly average depravity, with a truly massive
overlay of narrative heaped on top of him by partisan media on all
sides. In reality he was pretty much what you’d get if you took any
average American Fox News-watching boomer who yells at Obama on TV,
made him rich, and then made him president.
That’s
what Trump is and has been. Nothing more extraordinary than that. It
is only the effectiveness of echo chambers and the human tendency to
prioritize narrative over factual data which prevents more people
from seeing this.
And
now he is leaving, with his imaginary crimes still held as real and
his actual crimes completely ignored. Humanity will not be able to
create a healthy world until we find a way to transcend
our unhealthy and delusional relationship with mental narrative
which so easily obscures our perspective of what’s really happening.

Van de week plaatste Carlos Latuff onderstaand Twitterbericht en eigenlijk is daarmee alles wel gezegd, maar voor de onwetenden toch nog het volgende: te gek voor woorden dat Julian Assange nog steeds vastzit en waarvoor? Voor het uitstekend uitvoeren van zijn werk als gelauwerd onderzoeksjournalist!! Zijn ‘collega’s van de reguliere media moeten zich kapotschamen dat ze Assange zo hebben laten vallen, dit zijn dan ook geen journalisten, maar lakeien van het inhumane neoliberalisme en grootlobbyisten voor de illegale oorlogen die de grootste terreurentiteit ter wereld, de VS op een aantal plaatsen over de wereld, maar vooral in het Midden-Oosten en Afrika voert en dat met haar oorlogshond de NAVO aan de lijn, de NAVO is dan ook niets anders dan een terreurorganisatie onder militair bevel van de VS……..
Mooi dat Carlos Latuff nog eens de aandacht vestigt op Julian Assange die al zo godvergeten lang vastzit (daar hij tijdens zijn verblijf in de ambassade van Ecuador in feite ook gevangen zat) en dan zit hij nu ook nog eens in isolatie, wat men aanduidt als isolatiefolter, meer dan barbaars en een schunnige misdaad tegen de menselijkheid, bovendien een zeer brutale schending van de mensenrechten!!
Assange kan niet rekenen op onafhankelijke rechtspraak in Groot-Brittannië, of waar dan ook in het westen, daar hij door de reguliere media in die landen en dus door zijn collega’s al lang is veroordeeld voor verraad (‘trial by ordeal’), terwijl hij volkomen terecht oorlogsmisdaden aan het licht bracht en dat o.a. aangeleverd door klokkenluider Chelsea Manning, die alleen daarom al beschermd en gelauwerd had moeten worden, i.p.v gevangen te zijn gezet!!

Fowler is een Australische gelauwerde onderzoeksjournalist, die
eerder werkte voor ABC. Hij heeft zich vastgebeten in de zaak
Assange, de meer dan schunnige vervolging van een man die zich
op uitstekende wijze heeft gekwijt van zijn taak als
onderzoeksjournalist en die een groot aantal oorlogsmisdaden en

Ondanks dat is Assange door zijn ‘collega’s’ van de reguliere media uitgemaakt voor
verrader en charlatan, terwijl deze ‘journalisten’ zich achter de enorme
terreur hebben geschaard die de westerse wereld onder aanvoering van de

volgende artikel van John Kendall Hawkins, gepubliceerd op CounterPunch, komt het hele verhaal van Assange nog eens
voorbij en wordt uitvoerig ingegaan op de manier waarop Assange
geestelijk en daarmee lichamelijk is gemarteld, eerst in de
Ecuadoraanse ambassade (in de tijd voorafgaand aan zijn illegale
arrestatie door de politie van Londen) en daarna in de Belmarsh
gevangenis, waar hij in isolatie(-folter) wordt gehouden……
Het
artikel met veel verwijzingen, o.a, naar de film ‘Not in our name’,
gemaakt door John Furse, waarna met een paar bekenden wordt gesproken
over het vreselijke lot dat Assange heeft getroffen, waarbij hij
schandalig genoeg ook nog werd beschuldigd van verkrachting, een
smerige streek van het Zweedse ministerie van justitie, uiteraard met
hulp van terreurorganisatie CIA…….. De journalisten die zo’n
commentaar hebben op Assange, alleen omdat hij de waarheid naar
buiten bracht (en niemand in gevaar heeft gebracht zoals zo vaak
wordt gelogen als zou hij dit wel hebben gedaan), zouden minstens de film van Furse moeten zien……
Als
Julian Assange wordt uitgeleverd en veroordeeld in de VS, zal dat een
grote klap zijn voor de echt onafhankelijke journalistiek op de sociale media en op zeker dat met de uitspraak andere onderzoeksjournalisten worden
gewaarschuwd de mond te houden als het om zware misdaden van de overheid
gaat…..
Assange zal in de VS op zeker tot een heel
lange gevangenisstraf worden veroordeeld, terwijl hij in feite al meer dan 9 jaar
heeft vastgezeten en dat voor het vertellen van de waarheid en het bewijs daarvoor te hebben gegeven, NB met officiële documenten (op Wikileaks), zaken waarop het
volk recht heeft!! Een groot aantal journalisten van de reguliere
media moeten zich dan ook doodschamen dat ze Assange zo hebben
besmeurd……

Andrew Fowler is an Australian
award-winning investigative journalist and a former reporter for the
ABC’s Foreign Correspondent and Four Corners programs. and the
author of The
Most Dangerous Man in the World: Julian Assange and WikiLeaks’
Fight for Freedom.
This is an updated edition of his 2011 account of the rise and
political imprisonment of Assange.
Much of that account explained how
Assange seemingly inevitably moved toward an adversarial positioning
against American imperialism abroad. He was a tonic for the
indifference expressed by so many ordinary Americans in the traumatic
aftermath of 9/11 and the rise of the surveillance state. Boston
Legal’s Alan Shore (James Spader) seems to sum
it up succinctly.
His updated version discusses the
torture Assange is currently undergoing at Belmarsh prison in
Britain. Here is a must-see
film regarding his torture.
His book also contains the latest
on UC Global’s comprehensive spying on Assange and his visitors at
the Ecuadorian embassy in London in the last year of his ‘refuge’
there. UC Global is a Spanish security company hired to protect the
embassy. It has since been revealed that they were passing on data to
American intelligence, presumably the CIA.
Certainly, Fowler implies
such a connection in his updated book, citing two Assange hacking
breaches of US government servers, each of which, Fowler writes, the
CIA went berserk, as if they’d been hit by a foreign enemy. In the
last (new) chapter of the book, “The Casino,” Fowler describes
how outraged the CIA was when Assange published their hacking tools,
known as Vault 7, on Wikileaks: “Sean Roche, the deputy director of
digital innovation at the CIA, remembers the reaction from those
inside the CIA. He said he got a call from another CIA director who
was out of breath: ‘It was the equivalent of a digital Pearl
Harbor.’” Below is my recent interview with the author.

What is the up-to-date
status of Julian’s health?
It seems quite clear that there is
an attempt by the British and US administrations to destroy Assange,
either driving him to suicide or a psychological breakdown. He has
had a lung condition for a number of years, which has not been
properly treated, and is clearly suffering from huge stress. During
his last court appearance over a video link, there were long pauses
between his words, even when speaking his own name.
When Chelsea Manning was
imprisoned at Quantico she spent 23 hours per day in solitary
confinement and was stripped naked at night. How does Julian’s
treatment at Belmarsh compare? Manning’s treatment was said to be
an attempt to coerce her into ratting on others, including,
presumably Assange. What do you see as the ultimate purpose of
Assange’s treatment? And how does it amount to torture?
The ultimate purpose of Assange’s
treatment is a warning to others. Particularly other journalists.
It’s the modern day equivalent of crucifixion, putting heads of
enemies on spikes, or public hangings. The torture of Assange
involves two main areas: being confined to three rooms in a single
building for 7 years, and unable to leave without fear of arrest and
extradition to Sweden which was playing an underhand role to allow
Assange to be extrdited to the US. As the UN rapporteur on torture
Nils Meltzer wrote that never in the two decades he had spent
investigating war crimes had he ever seen such a ganging up of so
many powerful nations against one individual. It is a testament to
Assange’s mental strength that he resisted at all.
No effort was made by the
Swedes to “question” Assange once he was lifted from the
Ecuadorian Embassy, suggesting that their purpose all along was, as
Assange and his defenders averred, a pretext for hand-over. You’d
think there was some way to nix the bail jump charge given this
likelihood of intergovernmental collusion. Thoughts?
There are no outstanding
allegations for Assange to answer in Sweden. They were always only
allegations, rather than charges. It is important to understand that
if the Swedish prosecutors had charged Assange, they would have had
to reveal the evidence of the ‘offences’ to his lawyers upon
which those charges were based. And the evidence was not only thin,
it pointed to a conspiracy. So it was possible to keep Assange in the
embassy, while the UK prosecuting authority worked at ways of getting
him extradited to Sweden.
There seems little doubt that the plan all
along was to use Sweden as a holding pen for Assange as the US
applied for his extradition. It is possible he could take his case to
the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), but the Brexit decision,
makes this area extremely murky.
Can you provide more
details about the UC Global, the Spanish company brought into the
Ecuadorian Embassy to spy on Assange? Do we know more about what data
that they gathered? Has a more definitive connection to the CIA been
made? Has any further effort been put into place to quash the
extradition process based on this fact alone? (He could never expect
a fair trial back in the US if such surveillance and potentially
framing were done.)
UC Global not only recorded
hundreds of conversations inside the Ecuadorian embassy, but also photographed
the phones [and] their location identifying IMEI numbers,
passports and other documents of everyone who visited Assange in the
embassy between 2015 and 2018. It’s my understanding that the case
running in Madrid at the moment against the former CEO of UC Global,
David Morales, who is charged with illegally spying on Assange and
his lawyers (a specifically illegal act in Europe) will be used by
the Assange legal team to argue that the US extradition case should
be thrown out. It is my understanding that if any material gathered
spying on Assange and his lawyers is used, or even known about, by
those involved in the US prosecution – the charges must be
withdrawn. There has been no definitive connection to the CIA. The
closest I have managed to make the link is to the State Department
and White House confidantes.
Snowden’s, Permanent
Record is one of the best reads I’ve had in quite some time.
You could argue that his revelations are equally, if not more
significant, than what Assange offers up through Wikileaks. Where do
you stand on the difference of value, if any, between Wikileaks and
the Snowden revelations?
The main differences are: Assange
is a recipient of information which as a journalist he publishes.
Snowden is a source. When it comes to quantifying the different
values of their work, Assange mainly provided information and
analysis, whereas Snowden exposed intelligence gathering systems. In
the source-journalist relationship, they both need each other. Both
exposed the activities of a war-making machine. Without Assange it is
unlikely that we would have had Snowden. It was WikiLeaks that opened
up the public on a truly massive scale to a secret world of horror
and deception which until then had been largely hidden from view. For
Snowden’s part he brought the argument home that it wasn’t just
foreign governments who were being spied on, it was the Americans
themselves. They both played a significant and at times overlapping
role in revealing the truth about the world we’re in.
Assange and Snowden seem to
have had their differences over the years. Snowden describes in PR
how he chose his nickname: “The final name I chose for my
correspondence was ‘Verax,’ Latin for ‘speaker of truth,’ in
the hopes of proposing an alternative to the model of a hacker called
‘Mendax’ (‘speaker of lies’)—the pseudonym of the young man
who’d grow up to become WikiLeaks’s Julian Assange.” (p.193)
There was irritability there between them, and Snowden didn’t trust
Assange with his life (fearing that a dump, rather than a
journo-processed revelation system, would close off future
whistleblower arguments). His first choice had been the NYT,
but their suppression of James Risen’s 2004 pre-election piece on
STELLARWIND enraged him and he ended up going with Greenwald et
al, instead.
Snowden suggests character differences between the two, but on the
other hand Assange really pissed the US government off when he sent a
woman to rescue Snowden from Hong Kong. Some of us thought Obama was
going to shoot down Bolivia One with president Evo Morales on board
because Obama thought Snowden was onboard.
I see in Permanent
Record Snowden says he
decided not to go with WikiLeaks because of a change of policy to
publish material unredacted, or ‘pristine’ as he calls it. Not
sure why he says this because WL policy is to redact. [Here’s
Snowden’s explanation.] WL did put all the
Iraq/Afghanistan/Cablegate documents online un-redacted, but only
after David Leigh of the Guardian
published the password — and the material was already out on the
internet. I’ve never asked Assange this, but there is another
Mendax. In the 1920s an Australian science fiction writer Erle Cox’a
Mendax was an eccentric inventor. Mendax experiments with ‘matter
transmission’ ‘invisibility’ and ‘extracting gold from
seawater’. There is a tension between the two, no doubt about it.
Snowden still errs on the side of secrecy and Assange on the side of
publication, possibly the difference between an ex-intelligence agent
and a journalist.
Covid-19 seems to be the
wild card in the deck, vis-a-vis Assange’s extradition to the US.
If he doesn’t contract the illness in prison, then his extradition
next year could prove problematic — courts, protests, circus. How
do you think the virus will affect the legal proceedings? Do you
think he’ll be better off under Biden’s DOJ? Or worse, given the
perceived threat to the Democrats he represents? Do you see a way for
his defense to exploit the DNC/Russia hack dishonesty?
Not sure how Covid will impact
anything much, other than slowing down the process, which in itself
is extremely problematic for Assange. He’s already been in prison
or under house arrest (including the embassy) for nine years. I’m
not sure what it takes to embarrass the UK government into refusing
the extradition request, but the new indictment is surely turning the
political prosecution into a farce. The US now wants to re-arrest
Assange to wrap in a new indictment because the first one was likely
to fail. In past years it might have been possible for the UK
Government to reject this deceptive or incompetent behaviour by the
US, but Britain is a spent force now on the world stage, and the US
can do whatever it wants.
As for Biden’s DoJ, he’s called
Assange a ‘high-tech
terrorist’ and has recently said though he favours freedom of
the press it should not compromise US national security. Not much
hope there.
One hope Assange has is the
possible pardoning of Snowden. It plays to Trump’s ‘deep state’
argument that the intelligence agencies are out of control and were
involved in the fabrication of Russian collusion. [Here’s Snowden
referencing his work for the
“Deep State”] Assange’s work has exposed CIA atrocities
(which supports Trump’s position) but WikiLeaks has also revealed
evidence of war crimes by the US military, an establishment so
admired by his core supporters. I fear that a Snowden pardon, much as
I would personally welcome it, would only further isolate Assange.
If
Assange goes down, do you see a future for journalism in the world —
given America’s so-called leadership in this area, by way of the
holy first amendment, but with dwindling global newspapers. The
Guardian, WaPo and
the NYT
remain the only papers of record available in every international
terminal in the world — and sales falling for them, the fight over
what’s real news and what isn’t underway (a proxy war to control
the narrative), how do you see the fight for journalism ahead?
If Assange goes down, it will be
the third domino. First, the rising power of executive government;
second, the destruction of the, at times, countervailing power of the
mainstream media, including public broadcasters who draw their
political power from their audiences (and thus to a certain extent
are independent). The internet has savaged media budgets which has
weakened the overall media environment and empowered governments to
attack and cut public broadcasters. Assange who used the internet as
a weapon for journalism provided a way to re-energise old media
structures — engage readers and challenge executive government
authority. He provided a way to democratise journalism. It is the
reason he is such a threat to the hegemony of the US led five eyes
nations, who until recently in a uni-polar political and strategic
world, have ruled supreme.
I sometimes marvel at the
effect on journalism and even constitutional issues in America that
Australians have had. Early on, Assange seems to have declared war
on the DoD and, later, the US State Department; John Pilger has,
with his interview with the CIA “rogue”
Duane Clarridge, exposed the full fuckin hubris of American foreign
policy; and, Fox News has so dumbed down the political conversation
in America that it may be heading for a fate like that depicted in Idiocracy.
Any thoughts?
There’s a strange contradiction
in Australia. Australians are very conservative, and cautious, but
part of the national identity is tied to the notion of
anti-authoritarianism, dating back to the nation’s convict past.
The degradation of the mainly poor, transported to Australia from the
UK and Ireland two centuries ago for often minor crimes, created a
bedrock of antagonism against the ruling ‘elites’. This long
history of dissent in Australia has produced outstanding journalists
such as Pilger and Assange, Wilfred Burchett and Philip Knightly. I
can think of no better way to explain how Assange and Murdoch became
two of the most influential global media figures in the past century.
Murdoch rose to power as an anti-establishment figure in the UK and
Assange has done the same on a global basis.

Britse gevangenis Belmarsh, waar hij (geheel ten onrechte) wordt vastgehouden……. (zo meer daarover)
Joe Corré, activist en oprichter van Agent Provocateur stelt in het hieronder opgenomen RT interview dat deze zaak wellicht de belangrijkste is van deze eeuw als het gaat om persvrijheid, klokkenluiden en het ter verantwoording roepen van de machthebbers. Waar Corré vervolgt met de opmerking dat de reguliere media en de politiek zeker in het westen op de kop zouden moeten staan dat Assange voor het vertellen van de waarheid wordt vervolgd……
Echter de werkelijkheid ziet er heel anders uit: men herhaalt in die media en politiek de valse argumenten waarop de VS Assange tot 175 jaar gevangenisstraf wil veroordelen….. Men heeft zelfs het gore lef om nog steeds op de (valse) aanklacht wegens verkrachting te wijzen, terwijl die zaak voor de derde keer is afgeblazen in Zweden (m.n. de Britse media wijzen keer op keer op die zaak van seksueel geweld en dat Assange daarom vastzit in Groot-Brittannië, alsof Zweden hem daar nog steeds voor wil vervolgen….)….
Over dat vastzitten in de Belmarsh gevangenis, waar Assange zoals gezegd in isolatie zit: als hij verplaatst wordt, sluit men zelfs een hele afdeling af zodat hij niet met medegevangenen kan spreken……. Alsof Assange een levensgevaarlijke psychopaat is, i.p.v. een uitstekende onderzoeksjournalist die volkomen terecht de waarheid over VS oorlogsmisdaden heeft geopenbaard, dat is de taak van elke journalist, die zichzelf nog een beetje serieus neemt….
Het vastzetten van mensen in isolatie (zelfs als ze schuldig zijn aan een misdaad) is één van de ergste vormen van psychologische foltering, die zoals ook Corré zegt, niet alleen de geest ziek maakt, maar in dit soort gevallen ook nog eens lichamelijke klachten produceert, terwijl de fysieke gezondheid van Assange al te wensen overliet, voordat hij gevangen werd gezet in Belmarsh…..
Niet voor niets ook dat de VN Groot-Brittannië beschuldigt van een ernstige mensenrechtenschending als het gaat om Assange en dat hij inderdaad wordt gefolterd met zijn isolering in Belmarsh….* De VN speciaal rapporteur martelen zet verder grote vraagtekens bij de onafhankelijkheid van de Britse rechter die over de uitlevering gaat, daar zij banden heeft met groepen die belang hebben bij die uitlevering van Assange…..**

zij over de vreselijke omstandigheden waaronder ICE immigranten uit
Latijns-Amerika gevangen worden gehouden….. (zij gaat verder niet in op de omgang met vluchtelingenkinderen
Onlangs
werd al bekend gemaakt dat kinderen van immigranten nog steeds
gescheiden worden van hun ouders en moeten leven in omstandigheden
die te vergelijken zijn met de concentratiekampen van de nazi’s
tijdens WOII…… Hoorde eergisternacht op de BBC dat men zelfs
tot 100 kinderen in een soort van grote cel gevangen houdt…… Peuters lopen met of vuile luiers of helemaal geen luiers, zodat de kleding ongelofelijk vies wordt…..
Over kleding gesproken: pubers moeten soms wekenlang doen met de kleding die ze aanhebben….. Voedsel dat wordt verstrekt is niet zelden bedorven en de oudere kinderen moeten de kleine kinderen helpen, kinderen die zij niet kennen, noch dat deze pubers ervaring hebben in het zorgen voor kleine kinderen…… Het ontbreekt de kinderen veelal aan gezond voedsel, waar ze vaak zelfs te weinig te eten krijgen…… De sanitaire voorzieningen zijn smerig, zoals je al begrepen had…..
Uit het
artikel van Saleh, gepubliceerd op The Intercept, aandacht voor
het grote aantal gevallen van isolatie in de gevangenissen van ICE, of in door ICE gehuurde faciliteiten voor oudere vluchtelingen……. Voorts zijn ook hier de sanitaire
voorzieningen smerig en is het eten zonder meer slecht te noemen, zoals gezegd niet zelden met bedorven voedsel……
Het meest schunnige is wel, dat ondanks de grote ophef eerder over het scheiden van ouders en kinderen, deze scheiding nog steeds wordt doorgevoerd, om zo nieuwe vluchtelingen af te schrikken zodat ze niet naar de VS vluchten……
Het voorgaande kan dan ook tot geen andere conclusie leiden dan dat we hier (zoals eerder opgemerkt) te maken hebben met concentratiekampen en dat beste bezoeker kan niet vaak genoeg gezegd worden…….

CORY BOOKER CALLS FOR HEARINGS

CORY BOOKER, D-N.J., is calling on Senate
Judiciary Committee Chair Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., to hold a hearing
into Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s “egregious and
appalling abuses,” including the widespread use of solitary
confinement.
In
a letter to
Graham, Booker, who sits on the Judiciary Committee, referred to
solitary confinement as a “form of torture” and cited a
recent investigation by
the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, The
Intercept, NBC News, and four other reporting partners into ICE’s
use of solitary confinement. Our reporting, which included a review
of more than 8,400 reports describing placement in solitary
confinement from 2012 to early 2017, found that ICE uses isolation as
a go-to tool, rather than a last resort, to punish vulnerable
detained immigrants.
“The
news stories detail numerous examples of individuals placed in
confinement without justification, which prompted a whistleblower to
come forward to shine a light on these abuses,” wrote Booker,
referring to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) employee Ellen
Gallagher,
who quietly raised the alarm about ICE’s use of solitary
confinement for four years before going public in interviews with the
reporting consortium.
While
different carceral systems use varying terms to describe solitary
confinement — ICE calls it “segregation” — it is generally
understood to be the practice of holding individuals in isolation
with no human contact for at least 22 hours a day.
“ICE’s
own policy seems to recognize the dangers of solitary confinement,”
Booker continued. “It appears ICE has been consistently violating
its own policy on the use of solitary confinement.”
His
letter to Graham comes on the heels of a letter from
Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., to the acting director of
ICE, demanding
answers about
the agency’s use of solitary confinement and extensively citing our
investigation. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., another member of
the Judiciary Committee, also called for
a hearing into ICE’s use of solitary in response to our
investigation last month. The panel’s Democrats do not have
independent authority to schedule a hearing, hence the request to
Graham.
Booker,
in his letter, said that a Judiciary Committee hearing about ICE
would give the panel a chance to interrogate “grossly unsanitary
conditions at detention facilities,” as well as to gather more
information about forthcoming immigration raids that President Donald
Trump “flippantly alluded to” on Twitter last week. The
president, after announcing that the agency would begin to round up
“millions” of immigrants this week — a
logistically impossible endeavor —
on Saturday put the ICE operation on hold.
Graham,
an anti-immigrant hard-liner and apologist for the Trump
administration’s harsh policies, convened a committee hearing —
at Democrats’ request — in March to investigate Customs and
Border Protection for its actions at the southern border. Graham used
the hearing as an opportunity for fearmongering about
migrants seeking asylum in the United States. The CBP, like ICE,
falls under the umbrella of the Department of Homeland Security.
The
oversight hearing on CBP was not enough, Booker wrote. “In order to
fully address the scope of ICE’s serious and egregious violations,
the Committee must convene an oversight hearing. It’s becoming
increasingly clear that ICE has become nothing more than a lethal
weapon in the Trump administration’s war on immigrants and
communities of color, and we cannot be silent.”
BOOKER’S
HARSH STANCE against
ICE in the letter to Graham is in line with the tack he’s taken on
the presidential campaign trail, where he’s been a staunch critic
of the agency’s policies. In February, he, along with other 2020
hopefuls Warren, Sen. Kamala Harris, and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand,
voted against a spending bill, citing ICE. At the time,
Booker said that
bill would give ICE and CBP “hundreds of millions of additional
dollars with little oversight or appropriate guardrails.” In April,
he reintroduced
legislation to
enact protections for detained immigrants.
Booker has
also been an outspoken advocate of the rights of prisoners throughout
his federal career. At the same time, he’s remained close to a
party boss in his home state who oversees a jail that serves as an
immigration detention center and is rife with abuses, drawing
the ire of local progressives.
As
Politico reported on
Tuesday, Booker will be in New Jersey on Friday for a
$2,800-per-person fundraiser co-hosted by Essex County Executive
Joseph DiVincenzo. In that role, DiVincenzo oversees the Essex County
Correctional Facility in Newark, which has a $40 million per year
contract with ICE — and was called out for poor conditions in two
DHS Inspector General reports just this year.
Twenty-one
progressive organizations last week sent a letter to Booker calling
on him to cancel the fundraiser, Politico reported. “I believe that
Booker wants to make sure that the funnel of money keeps coming
through, and that’s why he’s supporting Joe [DiVincenzo] right
now,” Carrine Murphy, a paralegal who is critical of county jails’
contracts with ICE, told
Politico.
In
February, the Office of Inspector General identified a
number of issues at the jail, including food safety issues, with
“potentially contaminated food being served to detainees.” One
example noted “a detainee in segregation said the food
was so bad that he had started a liquid only diet and was considering
a full hunger strike.”
Earlier
this month, the Inspector General issued a follow-up reportbuilding
on the same inspection and said that “detainees are placed in
disciplinary segregation before the disciplinary hearing panel finds
the detainee guilty of the charged offense.”
The
facility has reported making improvements in its solitary confinement
practices, “including documenting why detainee strip searches
were conducted and revising recreation schedules to add additional
recreation time,” the Inspector General wrote.
The
ICIJ and Intercept investigation found 100 records of placement in
solitary confinement at the Essex County jail from 2013 to early
2017. Twenty-seven of those placements were due to disciplinary
reasons, while three of them were the result of a suicide risk.
Overall, we found at least 373 instances of detained immigrants being
placed in isolation because they were potentially suicidal — and
another 200-plus cases of people already in solitary confinement
moved to “suicide watch” or another form of observation, in many
cases in another solitary cell.
Immigration
is expected to be a hot-button issue throughout the presidential
campaign. Booker and Warren will both participate in the first 2020
Democratic presidential debate in Miami, Florida, on Wednesday night.

werkt nooit heeft gezien hoe een groep van ‘democratische staten’
samenwerkten om één persoon zo lang moedwillig te isoleren, te
demoniseren en te misbruiken en dat met weinig of geen inachtneming
van de menselijke waardigheid en de (internationale) wetgeving……… Deze behandeling van Assange kan volgens Melzer dan ook niet anders worden gezien dan als geestelijke
foltering…….
Gelukkig
beginnen de reguliere media in te binden met hun spugen op Assange,
men schijnt wakker te zijn geschrokken van wat Assange te wachten
staat en dat zou gezien de laatste verzonnen aanklachten van de VS
zelfs tot de doodstraf kunnen leiden….. Iedereen met 2 of meer hersencellen begrijpt dat deze zaak z’n weerslag zal hebben op de hele internationale journalistiek, hoe volgzaam en fout reguliere media ook handelen, hetzelfde zou hen kunnen overkomen…*

UN
Torture Report: “Demonized” Assange Has Faced “Psychological
Torture”
(CN) — The
UN special rapporteur on torture has issued a stinging rebuke to the
United States, Great Britain, Sweden and Ecuador for “deliberately”
exposing WikiLeaks founder
Julian Assange to years of “cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment
or punishment,” which can only be described as “psychological
torture.”
“In
20 years of work with victims of war, violence and political
persecution I have never seen a group of democratic States ganging up
to deliberately isolate, demonise and abuse a single individual for
such a long time and with so little regard for human dignity and the
rule of law,” Nils Melzer said in a statement published
on the UN High Commissioner for Human Right’s website on Friday.
“The collective persecution of Julian Assange must end here and
now!”
“The
evidence is overwhelming and clear,” Melzer said. “Mr.
Assange has been deliberately exposed, for a period of several years,
to progressively severe forms of cruel, inhuman or degrading
treatment or punishment, the cumulative effects of which can only be
described as psychological torture.”
Melzer
went on:
“In
the course of the past nine years, Mr. Assange has been exposed to
persistent, progressively severe abuse ranging from systematic
judicial persecution and arbitrary confinement in the Ecuadorian
embassy, to his oppressive isolation, harassment and surveillance
inside the embassy, and from deliberate collective ridicule, insults
and humiliation, to open instigation of violence and even repeated
calls for his assassination.”

Melzer
visited Assange at Belmarsh prison in London on May 9 with two
doctors, expert in recognizing potential torture victims, who
examined the WikiLeaks founder.
Melzer’s statement makes no mention of Assange having
been hospitalized in
the prison after he was unable to converse with his Swedish lawyer.
Melzer
said:
“It
was obvious that Mr. Assange’s health has been seriously affected
by the extremely hostile and arbitrary environment he has been
exposed to for many years.
Most
importantly, in addition to physical ailments, Mr. Assange showed all
symptoms typical for prolonged exposure to psychological torture,
including extreme stress, chronic anxiety and intense psychological
trauma.”
Fears
Possible Torture in U.S.
The
UN rapporteur said Assange’s human rights could be further
threatened with extradition to the United States to face 18 charges,
including 17 under the Espionage Act.
“My
most urgent concern is that, in the United States, Mr. Assange would
be exposed to a real risk of serious violations of his human rights,
including his freedom of expression, his right to a fair trial and
the prohibition of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading
treatment or punishment,” said Melzer.
He
said he was “particularly alarmed” by the Espionage Act charges.
“This may well result in a life sentence without parole, or
possibly even the death penalty, if further charges were to be added
in the future,” said Melzer.
The
rapporteur expressed deep concern that the Trump administration is
criminalizing journalism.
“Since
2010, when Wikileaks started publishing evidence of war crimes and
torture committed by US forces, we have seen a sustained and
concerted effort by several States towards getting Mr. Assange
extradited to the United States for prosecution, raising serious
concern over the criminalisation of investigative journalism in
violation of both the US Constitution and international human rights
law,” the rapporteur said.

Gets Confidential Report
The Sydney
Morning Herald, quoting
from the confidential report that Melzer sent to the British
government on Monday as well as from an interview with
rapporteur, reported
:
“[Assange]
is really something I’ve never seen in 20 years,” Melzer said.
“I’ve seen atrocities in war areas that were physically more
horrible but I’ve never seen a single person pursued so
relentlessly and with so little foundation.
“[When
I saw him] I immediately compared him to some of the graver cases in
interrogation prisons in terms of his psychological reaction
patterns. That’s what alarmed me so much.” He said Assange’s
treatment was “very close to the intentional, purposeful infliction
of coercive measures to try to break him”.
He
appeared “extremely agitated and preoccupied,” Melzer said. “He
asked a lot of questions and he would jump around, he was so
preoccupied with everything he can’t even compute my answers any
more.
“There
were episodes of this, then he was part of the conversation as
normal, then again he would enter into this agitated state. I have
seen with other victims of psychological torture that would happen.”
Melzer
also blasted the government of Assange’s native Australia. He told
the newspaper, “Australia is a glaring absence in this case.
They’re just not around, as if Assange was not an Australian
citizen. That is not the correct way of dealing with that.”
A
spokesperson for the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and
Trade told the Herald: “We reject any suggestion by the UN Special
Rapporteur on Torture that the Australian Government is complicit in
psychological torture or has shown a lack of consular support for Mr
Assange.”
Britain’s
foreign secretary, Jeremy Hunt, condemned Melzer for his report. Hunt
said it was “wrong” for the UN rapporteur to interfere with
British justice by uttering “inflammatory accusations.”

Duizenden
Koerdische gevangenen in Turkije zijn in hongerstaking gegaan, een
voorbeeld dat is gevolgd door Koerdische, Turkse en andere mensenrechtenactivisten buiten Turkije.
Het
zal je dan ook niet verbazen dat deze hongerstakingen gaan over de
behandeling van Koerden en niet in de laatste plaats de gevangenhouding van Abdullah Öcalan, de
voor het leven gevangen gezette en in isolatiefolter levende voormalige PKK
leider….
Over
de PKK gesproken: ongelofelijk dat men in de EU en de VS, de PKK nog
steeds op de terreurlijst heeft staan, terwijl het intussen zelfs tot
de grootste critici van Koerdische onafhankelijkheid moet zijn doorgedrongen, dat het Koerdische volk wordt vertrapt door Turkije… Zeker nu men
heeft gezien waartoe de Koerden in staat zijn, immers zij waren van
aanvang de enige groep in Syrië en Irak die IS daadwerkelijk met succes wisten te
bevechten, zoals de sjiitische Houthi rebellen dat in Jemen deden……
De
PKK moet van de terreurlijst, zet het Turkse leger en de kliek van Erdogan maar op die lijst,
het leger dat met grote steun van de reli-fascistische Erdogan ‘regering’, een heel smerige oorlog voert tegen de Koerden in
Turkije…… Een oorlog waarover we amper iets horen, daar Turkije geen
toestemming geeft aan mensenrechtenorganisaties, advocaten, de
nationale en internationale pers, dit gebied te bezoeken…… Een zwaar ongelijke oorlog, die door toedoen van het Turkse leger gepaard gaat met massamoorden op de Koerdische bevolking……

There
are thousands of hunger strikers in prisons across Turkey. These are
their ‘last messages’.
Thousands
of prisoners across
Turkey are on hunger strike. Kurdish MP Leyla Güven started the
hunger strike while in prison. Now at home, Güven has not eaten for
148 days and is critically ill.
Since
starting her hunger strike, Güven has inspired thousands to join
her. In the UK, these include Iman
Sis,
a Kurdish activist in Wales who is on day 109 of hunger strike and
87-year-old human rights lawyer Margaret Jones who has
just joined the
hunger strike.
Now
the Raise Your Voice for Leyla initiative has released a document to
“see the person behind the numbers”. It gives short biographies
of some of the prisoners on hunger strike and their “last
messages”.
The
demands of the hunger strike
The indefinite
hunger strike is
calling for an end to Kurdish leader Abdullah
Öcalan’s
solitary confinement and to allow him access to lawyers and family
visits.
Öcalan co-founded the
Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK), which has fought for Kurdish
freedom and autonomy since the 1970s. He has been imprisoned by
Turkey for 20
years. Turkey
has defined the
PKK as a ‘terrorist group’. Most Western states followed suit, as
they see Turkey as a key trading
partner and NATO ally.
The
hunger strikers are not asking for special treatment for Öcalan.
They want to
break his isolation. They want peace. And while Öcalan is held in
conditions where he has no access to lawyers, to his family, to
visits, there will not be peace. So the hunger strikers see their
demands for Öcalan as a demand for peace. They want Öcalan to have
the same rights as other prisoners in Turkey; rights that he should
already be entitled to under existing Turkish law. They’re just
asking for Turkey to respect its own legislation.
Raise
Your Voice for Leyla
The
Raise Your Voice for Leyla initiative was founded during a
women’s forum that The
Canary attended
on 2 March. The group states the
conditions the prisoners are currently enduring:
Those
on hunger strike in prisons are subjected to solitary confinement,
those on hunger strike for a long time are not allowed to have people
to accompany them, there are efforts to impede their communication
with the outside world through imposing disciplinary punishments such
as not allowing them to receive visits from family members, to make
phone calls, to send and receive mail.
And
it describes the
critical condition the prisoners are in:
They
are subjected to physical and psychological violence. Reports of the
Human Rights Association indicate that their blood pressure and
weight are not regularly measured, they are not provided with
adequate amount of salt, sugar, carbon, lemon, fruit juice and those
in their possession are confiscated, and prices of such goods in
prison markets are doubled. Those who have spent decades in prisons
struggling against rights violations are at risk of irreversible
damage.
And
the group sets out why it has released the document:
We
believe that it is our humanitarian duty to present to you this
document including short bios of prisoners who are on hunger strike
and their last messages, and remind about humane conscientious, moral
and legal responsibilities so that national and international
dynamics are put into action with a view not to remain silent to and
to put an end to this tragedy.

This
is urgent
Seven
people have
taken their own lives this year in protest at the isolation
of Öcalan. Six of them were Kurdish political prisoners in
Turkish prisons. Siraç
Yüksek was
the latest person to take this action. His death was reported on 2
April. Güven and others have
called for these suicide actions to stop, and for the movement to
focus on the struggle of the hunger strikers.
But
time is running out. Güven’s health is deteriorating.
These people do not want to die. They want the Turkish government to
respect its own laws and end the isolation.
This
is urgent. This is not something that can be put off until tomorrow.
Action is needed now.

Afgelopen
maandag hebben Naom Chomsky, Chris Hedges, John Pilger e.a. Ecuador
opgeroepen om de isolatie van Julian Assange op te heffen. Middels
zogenaamde jammers heeft Ecuador het Assange onmogelijk gemaakt nog
te communiceren met de buitenwereld……
Uiteraard
is dit onder druk van de VS gebeurd, die Assange het liefst fiks wil
straffen. Met deze isolatie is het verblijf van Assange in de Engelse Ecuadoraanse ambassade veranderd in een volledige gevangenschap……
Lullig
dat de ondertekenaars van dit pleidooi niet ook Groot-Brittannië
hebben opgeroepen de waanzinnige bewaking van de ambassade in Londen en de
dreiging van Assanges arrestatie in te trekken (arrestatie als Assange één been buiten de ambassade
zet). Assange is een klokkenluider die met het door hem opgerichte Wikileaks juist de wereldbevolking dient….
Zoals gesteld in het volgende artikel: zelfs de VN vindt de
dreiging van arrestatie voor Assange onaanvaardbaar. Assange is in feite een
klokkenluider die het opneemt voor de gewone mens tegen de willekeur
van overheden en dan m.n. die van de grootste terreurentiteit op
aarde, de VS……
Assange
wordt het spreken onmogelijk gemaakt, niet in China of Saoedi-Arabië,
maar midden in het westen dat boogt op de vrijheid van meningsuiting
en waar men keer op keer beweerd klokkenluiders te willen beschermen,
terwijl de praktijk het tegenovergestelde laat zien, een praktijk
waarvan Assange wel het meest sprekende voorbeeld is……..
Vreemd
ook dat men hier niet een internationale petitie van heeft gemaakt,
een paar miljoen handtekeningen maken ‘net iets meer indruk…’
Maar
geen gezeur, deze oproep is alvast een geweldig begin:
We
call on the government of Ecuador to allow Julian Assange his right
of freedom of speech.
If
it was ever clear that the case of Julian Assange was never just a
legal case, but a struggle for the protection of basic human rights,
it is now.
Citing
his critical tweets about the recent detention of Catalan president
Carles Puidgemont in Germany, and following pressure from the US,
Spanish and UK governments, the Ecuadorian government has installed
an electronic jammer to stop Assange communicating with the
outside world via the internet and phone. As if ensuring his
total isolation, the Ecuadorian government is also refusing to allow
him to receive visitors. Despite two UN rulings describing his
detention as unlawful and mandating his immediate release, Assange
has been effectively imprisoned since he was first placed in
isolation in Wandsworth prison in London in December 2010. He has
never been charged with a crime.
The Swedish case against him
collapsed and was withdrawn, while the United States has stepped up
efforts to prosecute him. His only “crime” is that of a true
journalist — telling the world the truths that people have a right
to know.
Under
its previous president, the Ecuadorian government bravely stood
against the bullying might of the United States and granted Assange
political asylum as a political refugee. International law and the
morality of human rights was on its side.
Today,
under extreme pressure from Washington and its collaborators, another
government in Ecuador justifies its gagging of Assange by stating
that “Assange’s behaviour, through his messages on social
media, put at risk good relations which this country has with the UK,
the rest of the EU and other nations.”
This
censorious attack on free speech is not happening in Turkey, Saudi
Arabia or China; it is right in the heart of London. If the
Ecuadorian government does not cease its unworthy action, it, too,
will become an agent of persecution rather than the valiant nation
that stood up for freedom and for free speech. If the EU and the UK
continue to participate in the scandalous silencing of a true
dissident in their midst, it will mean that free speech is indeed
dying in Europe.
This
is not just a matter of showing support and solidarity. We are
appealing to all who care about basic human rights to call on the
government of Ecuador to continue defending the rights of a
courageous free speech activist, journalist and whistleblower.
We
ask that his basic human rights be respected as an Ecuadorian citizen
and internationally protected person and that he not be silenced or
expelled.
If
there is no freedom of speech for Julian Assange, there is no freedom
of speech for any of us — regardless of the disparate opinions we
hold.
We
call on President Moreno to end the isolation of Julian Assange now.
