over!!

How
We Could Wind Up Banned From Discussing An October Surprise On Social
Media This Election

by
Caitlin
Johnstone

In
what it calls an effort to make itself “a more reliable source
for election-related news and information,” YouTube
has
announced

that it will be removing “content that contains hacked
information, the disclosure of which may interfere with democratic
processes, such as elections and censuses.”

“For
example, videos that contain hacked information about a political
candidate shared with the intent to interfere in an election,”
adds the Google-owned video sharing platform.

IMPORTANT

YOUTUBE just quietly announced they’ll REMOVE “videos that contain hacked information about a political candidate with the intent to interfere in an election” https://blog.youtube/news-and-events/an-update-on-how-youtube-supports-elections/

Remember how Wikileaks changed the game in 2016? Yeah, that’s not allowed anymore.

This
by itself is an alarming assault on human communication and press
freedom. If there is authentic information out there about either of
the candidates who are up for the most powerful elected position on
the planet, the world is entitled to know about it, regardless of how
that information was acquired. Monopolistic tech oligarchs have no
business barring us from learning about and discussing that
information.

Immensely
powerful people should not be permitted to have secrets from the
public anyway. The amount of power one has should be directly inverse
to the amount of secrecy they are permitted to have. If you’re
anywhere near the presidency of the United States of America, the
secrecy you are entitled to should be zero.

If
a hacker is able to get ahold of accurate information about Donald
Trump or Joe Biden, that information is ours. We’re entitled to it.
Anyone who tries to obstruct our access to that information is
stealing from us. It’s absolutely ridiculous that we have a society
where people are permitted to both rule over us and keep secrets from
us as it is without
government-aligned
tech plutocrats silencing our attempts to learn what those secrets
might be.

Moreover,
no YouTube moderator will be in any position to definitively say
whether most information that comes out is hacked. They’d only be
able to do what the mass media did with the 2016 WikiLeaks drops and
cite unproven assertions by opaque intelligence agencies who have a
proven track record of lying, assertions which
turned
out to be far more dubious

than most Americans realize. Documents or video could be leaked about
a candidate and US intelligence agencies could just declare it a
“hack” and have any YouTube videos about it immediately
censored.

As
Alan MacLeod
explains
for
MintPress
News
:

“[T]he
great majority of leaked information — the lifeblood of
investigative journalism — is anonymous. Often, like in the cases
of Edward Snowden, Chelsea Manning or Reality Winner, whistleblowers
face serious consequences if their names become attached to documents
exposing government or corporate malfeasance. But without a name to
go with a document, the difference between leaked data and hacked
data is impossible to define. Thus, powerful people and organizations
could claim data was hacked, rather than leaked, and simply block all
discussion of the matter on the platform.”

So
this in and of itself is an outrage. But the way things are playing
out it could wind up being a lot worse if damning information about a
candidate surfaces prior to the November election.

We
already know from experience that social media giants tend to follow
in each other’s footsteps whenever there’s a significant step in the
direction of censorship, like their coordinated cross-platform
removals of
alternative
media outlets
,
accounts
from US-targeted nations
,
and
people
who have been labeled “
conspiracy
theorists
“.

So
there’s already reason to be concerned that YouTube’s new attack on
press freedoms will spread to social media outlets like Twitter and
Facebook. Add in the fact that these platforms are openly
coordinating with each other and with the US government to silence
speech deemed “online meddling” and “election
interference” and it looks a lot more likely.

The
New York Times
published
an article

on Wednesday titled “Google, Facebook and Others Form Tech
Coalition to Secure U.S. Election”,
later
changed

to “Google, Facebook and Others Broaden Group to Secure U.S.
Election”.

“Facebook,
Google and other major tech companies said on Wednesday that they had
added new partners and met with government agencies in their efforts
to secure the November election,” NYT reports. “The group,
which is seeking to prevent the kind of online meddling and foreign
interference that sullied the 2016 presidential election, previously
consisted of some of the large social media firms, including Twitter
and Microsoft in addition to Facebook and Google. Among the new
participants is the Wikimedia Foundation.”

@caitoz

Monopolistic tech companies which collaborate in unison with government agencies to prevent unauthorized narratives from circulating on the internet are conducting state censorship. Own it.

So
if information emerges about a candidate in an “October
surprise” in a way that can be credibly spun as a “hack”
like the 2016 WikiLeaks drops were, it’s entirely likely that we will
see some interference in people’s ability to communicate about it on
not just one but multiple social media platforms. How much
communication interference we’d be subjected to is unknown at this
time, but it certainly looks like there are measures in place to at
least implement some under certain circumstances.

Imagine
if documents or video footage were posted online somewhere and we’d
get blocked from sharing its URLs on Facebook or suspended for
posting screenshots of it on Twitter. The way iron-fisted censorship
practices are already unfolding, it’s a possibility that looks not at
all remote.

Anyway,
something to be on alert for.

mogelijkheden…..

kinderspel is…..

New
Tech Company Partnership to Offset Responsibility for Public Safety
and Health onto AI

By: Raul
Diego

July 16th,
2020

New Tech Company Partnership to Offset Responsibility for Public ...

Silicon
Valley

(MPN) – A new tech partnership augurs a bleak vision for the future
of public safety and health emergencies where algorithms and mass
profiling of entire populations make the social contract obsolete.

The
transition from a manned police force into an AI-assisted panopticon
through which populations are monitored 24/7 is occurring at
breakneck speed as tech giants like Google, Apple and Microsoft pour
millions of dollars into a New York-based startup called RapidSOS,
which “transmits data from 911 callers to emergency responders.”

Now that startup has
partnered with ZeroEyes,
an artificial intelligence software company that uses video analytics
technology to identify weapons in video footage. The AI startup bills
itself as a group of patriotic “US military veterans, consultants,
and technologists” who claim to have “lived through countless
active shooter situations” and are committed to “empowering
safety & security professionals.”

The partnership with
RapidSOS will allow ZeroEyes to send its data directly to 911
personnel. RapidSOS already had more than 3,500 agencies using its
platform in the United States and the world at the time of its last
cash infusion last year and boasts data-collection and transmission
from over 250 million devices on its website. Among the devices are
vehicle integrations, wearable tech, sensors, security cameras, and
mobile apps.

With ZeroEyes’
AI-enabled weapons detection software, companies like RapidSOS will
oversee the transition away from human policing and emergency
response methods into an Orwellian grid of
programmatically-controlled public safety mechanisms in which
situations like the senseless police killing of George Floyd and
other unarmed civilians, as well as any sort of misapplication of
justice or medical malpractice, will be reduced to an executable
script running silently in the background of our collective dystopian
nightmare.

Moving
on up

ZeroEyes was founded
by Navy veteran, Albert “Al” Shore, a former NATO
cryptologist
and expert on predictive analysis capabilities.
The company’s current CEO, Mike
Lahiff
, is a former Navy Seal who used to be a director of
digital program management for Comcast until he was tapped by another
Navy Seal to join ZeroEyes. The company, which has partnerships with
Dell and Nvidia, is modeled on a previous iteration of weapons
detection technology called ShotSpotter,
which used sound sensors to identify gunshots used by more than 90
cities.

ZeroEyes’
partnership with RapidSOS puts the company on a whole new level,
which will go far beyond what Lahiff’s hopes will be a reduction in
“emergency response times” for active shooter situations. Among
RapidSOS’ business partners are not only tech giants like the
aforementioned Google, Apple, and Microsoft, but also Mark 43; a
“public safety software” company whose list of advisors and
investors reads like a who’s who of the mass surveillance tech and
defense community.

Founder and CEO of
Amazon Jeff Bezos and former CIA director and retired General, David
Petraeus, who once quipped that “we’ll
spy on you through your dishwasher
,” top the list.

Perhaps more
revealing is the presence of venture capitalist, Roy
Rothrock
, who has sizable investments in an Israeli startup
called Toka, which claims to offer “a one-stop hacking shop for
governments that require extra capability to fight terrorists and
other threats to national security in the digital domain” through
IoT devices like Amazon’s
Alexa
 and Echo.

Rapid
adoption opportunities

As with many other
tech startups, the COVID-19 crisis has opened the door for widespread
adoption across the healthcare sector and RapidSOS is no exception.
Now counting over 4,700 public safety agencies among its network, the
company is now expanding its data platform by launching the
Emergency
Health Profile
” together with the American Heart Association,
the American Red Cross, and Direct Relief to profile people
associated to their mobile phone number.

Claiming to be the
“world’s first emergency response data platform that securely
links life-saving data from connected devices,” people can create
their own “Emergency Health Profile” on emergencyprofile.org to
provide emergency first-responders with the critical information they
need “during these uncertain times”.

RapidSOS is at the
forefront of the re-engineering of the “nation’s 911
infrastructure” that has been in place since the 1960s and is now,
along with law enforcement models, being supplanted with digital
technologies and algorithms, that are moving society towards a place
made less for people than for the machines designed to enslave us.

willen kweken tegen COVID-19, nee men hoopt de wereldbevolking

Surgeon General wants to
reopen, news media say “not interested”

Commentary
from Rashid Buttar MD

Where are the doctors?

One of the most articulate people
exposing the CoVid-19 scam is veteran MD Rashid Buttar.

In this video, he points out a
number of things including Surgeon General plans to re-open the
economy which no one in the news media is interested in hearing –
or telling you about.

Why aren’t we hearing from more
doctors?

1. They’re afraid of having their
licenses challenged
2. If they work for the government, they don’t
want to get off the gravy train
3. If they’re academics, they
don’t want to lose their funding
4. If they work for hospitals,
they don’t want to lose their jobs
5. If they’re
Pharma-whores, they don’t want to piss off the rep who arranges for
their free vacations

In short, this is a profession that
has largely been co-opted and at this point, they barely deserve the
designation of profession.

AnyVision kortgeleden haar investeringsprogramma aangepast, zodat

Microsoft’s
dirty surveillance secret in Israel

All
across the West Bank there is a network of secret cameras hooked up
to cutting-edge facial recognition software. It tracks every
Palestinian face it can find, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The
Israeli Defense Forces’ surprise partner in this Orwellian
surveillance system? Microsoft.

This
June, Microsoft made a massive multi-million dollar investment in
AnyVision, an Israeli facial recognition company led by former Mossad
and Israeli defense staff – even though Microsoft had just
committed to follow six ethical “principles to guide Microsoft’s
facial recognition work.”

A
description of one of these principles:

We
will not deploy our facial recognition technology in those
surveillance scenarios where we believe there are inadequate
safeguards to protect democratic freedoms and human rights.”

Under
Israel’s apartheid system, there can never be adequate “safeguards”
to protect the freedoms and human rights of Palestinians.

And
there is NOTHING ETHICAL about creating a dystopian system to watch
over an imprisoned people
.

If
Microsoft wants to claim that it’s an ethical leader in Artificial
Intelligence, and continue to position itself as a trustworthy family
brand, then CEO Satya Nadella must act immediately.

Add
your name to our petition demanding Microsoft cut all ties with its
dirty surveillance secret, and then send CEO Satya Nadella a message
on Twitter to make sure he can’t ignore us.

There’s
strong evidence Microsoft knew their investment with AnyVision was
unethical but went ahead anyway.

Bloomberg
reports that the facial recognition company AnyVision stopped its
investment round to get in line with Microsoft’s ethical standards,
which almost certainly means Microsoft was scrutinizing their
projects.

It
would be hard for Microsoft NOT to have known the Israeli Defense
Forces were going to benefit from the investment: former Mossad chief
Tamir Pardo heads the AnyVision advisory board, and the president of
the company is Amir Kain, former head of the Defense Ministry’s
security department.

It’s
bad enough that Palestinians endure long waits at checkpoints, live
segregated from Jews, and are treated like criminals while trying to
get to work or visit family. Now their every move will be monitored
with Microsoft’s help.

Many
of us use Microsoft’s products at work, home and play – and as
consumers and citizens, we have a huge ability to shape the
perception of Microsoft’s brand
.
If they want us all to buy that they’re an ethical leader in
Artificial Intelligence, they need to immediately ditch AnyVision.

Add
your name to our petition demanding Microsoft cut all ties with
AnyVision, and then send CEO Satya Nadella a message on Twitter to
make sure he can’t ignore us.

(MPN) —
Soon after the social media “purge” of independent media sites
and pages this past October, a top neoconservative insider — Jamie
Fly —
was
caught
 stating
that the mass deletion of anti-establishment and anti-war pages on
Facebook and Twitter was “just the beginning” of a concerted
effort by the U.S. government and powerful corporations to silence
online dissent within the United States and beyond.

While
a few, relatively uneventful months in the online news sphere have
come and gone since Fly made this ominous warning, it appears that
the neoconservatives and other standard bearers of the
military-industrial complex and the U.S. oligarchy are now poised to
let loose their latest digital offensive against independent media
outlets that seek to expose wrongdoing in both the private and public
sectors.

As MintPress
News
 Editor-in-Chief
Mnar Muhawesh
recently
wrote
MintPress was
informed that it was under review by an organization called Newsguard
Technologies, which described itself to
MintPress as
simply a “news rating agency” and asked Muhawesh to comment on a
series of allegations, several of which were blatantly untrue.
However, further examination of this organization reveals that it is
funded by and deeply connected to the U.S. government,
neo-conservatives, and powerful monied interests, all of whom have
been working overtime since the 2016 election to silence dissent to
American forever-wars and corporate-led oligarchy.

More
troubling still, Newsguard — by virtue of its deep connections to
government and Silicon Valley — is lobbying to have its rankings of
news sites installed by default on computers in U.S.
public libraries, schools, and universities as well as on all
smartphones and computers sold in the United States.

In
other words, as Newsguard’s project advances, it will soon become
almost impossible to avoid this neocon-approved news site’s ranking
systems on any technological device sold in the United States. Worse
still, if its efforts to quash dissenting voices in the U.S. are
successful, Newsguard promises that its next move will be to take its
system global.

Red
light, green light . . .

Newsguard
has received considerable attention in the mainstream media of late,
having been the subject of a
slew
of articles
 in
the
Washington
Post, the Hill
the
Boston Globe, Politico, Bloomberg, Wired,
and
many others just over the past few months. Those articles portray
Newsguard as using “old-school journalism” to fight “fake news”
through its reliance on nine criteria allegedly intended to separate
the wheat from the chaff when it comes to online news.

Newsguard
separates sites it deems worthy and sites it considers unreliable by
using a color-coded rating — green, yellow, or red — and more
detailed “nutrition labels” regarding a site’s credibility or
lack thereof. Rankings are created by Newsguard’s team of “trained
analysts.” The color-coding system may remind some readers of the
color-coded terror threat-level warning system that was created after
9/11, making it worth noting that Tom Ridge, the former secretary of
Homeland Security (DHS) who oversaw the implementation of that system under
George W. Bush, is on Newsguard’s
advisory
board
.

As
Newsguard releases a new rating of a site, that rating automatically
spreads to all computers that have installed its news ranking browser
plug-in. That plug-in is currently available for free for the most
commonly used internet browsers. NewsGuard directly markets the
browser plug-in to libraries, schools and internet users in general.

According
to
its
website
,
Newsguard has rated more than 2,000 news and information sites.
However, it plans to take its ranking efforts much farther
by
eventually
reviewing
 “the
7,500 most-read news and information websites in the U.S.—about 98
percent of news and information people read and share online” in
the United States in English.

recent
Gallup study,
 which
was supported and funded by Newsguard as well as the Knight
Foundation (itself a major investor in Newsguard), stated that a
green rating increased users likelihood to share and read content
while a red rating decreased that likelihood. Specifically, it found
63 percent would be less likely to share news stories from red-rated
websites, and 56 percent would be more likely to share news from
green-rated websites, though the fact that Newsguard and one of its
top investors funded the poll makes it necessary to take these
findings with a grain of salt.

However,
some of the rankings Newsguard itself has publicized show that it is
manifestly uninterested in fighting “misinformation.” How else to
explain the fact that the
Washington
Post
 and CNN both
received high scores even though both have written stories or made
statements that later proved to be entirely false? For example,
CNN
falsely
claimed
 in
2016 that it was illegal for Americans to read WikiLeaks releases and
illegally colluded with the DNC to craft presidential debate
questions.

In
addition, in 2017, CNN published
a
fake story
 that
a Russian bank linked to a close ally of President Donald Trump was
under Senate investigation. That same year, CNN was forced to retract
a report that the Trump campaign had been tipped off early about
WikiLeaks documents damaging to Hillary Clinton when it later learned
the alert was about material already publicly available.

The Washington
Post
,
whose $600 million
conflict
of interest with the CIA
 goes
unnoted by Newsguard, has also published false stories since the 2016
election, including
one
article
 that
falsely claimed that “Russian hackers” had tapped into Vermont’s
electrical grid. It was later found that the grid itself was never
breached and the “hack” was only an isolated laptop with a minor
malware problem. Yet, such acts of journalistic malpractice are
apparently of little concern to Newsguard when those committing such
acts are big-name corporate media outlets.

Furthermore,
Newsguard gives a high rating to
Voice
of America
,
the U.S. state-funded media outlet, even though its former acting
associate director
said that
the outlet produces “fluff journalism” and despite the fact that
it was recently reformed to “provide news that supports our [U.S.]
national security objectives.” However,
RT receives
a low “red” rating
 for
being funded by the Russian government and for “raising doubts
about other countries and their institutions” (i.e., including
reporting critical of the institutions and governments of the U.S.
and its allies).

Keeping
the conversation safe for the corporatocracy

Newsguard describes
itself
 as
an organization dedicated to “restoring trust and accountability”
and using “journalism to fight false news, misinformation and
disinformation.” While it
repeatedly
claims
 on
its website that its employees “have no political axes to grind”
and “care deeply about reliable journalism’s pivotal role in
democracy,” a quick look at its co-founders, top funders and
advisory board make it clear that Newsguard is aimed at curbing
voices that hold the powerful — in both government and the private
sector — to account.

Newsguard
is the latest venture to result from the partnership between Steven
Brill and Louis Gordon Crovitz, who currently serve as co-CEOs of the
group. Brill is a long-time journalist — published
in
TIME and The
New Yorker
,
among others — who most recently founded the Yale Journalism
Initiative, which
aims
to encourage
 Yale
students who “aspire to contribute to democracy in the United
States and around the world” to become journalists at top U.S. and
international media organizations. He first teamed up with Crovitz in
2009
to
create
 Journalism
Online
,
which sought to make the online presence of top American newspapers
and other publishers profitable, and was also
the
CEO of the company
 that
partnered up with the TSA to offer “registered” travelers the
ability to move more quickly through airport security — for a
price, of course.

While
Brill’s past does not in itself raise red flags, Crovitz — his
partner in founding
Journalism
Online
,
then Press+, and now Newsguard — is the last person one would
expect to find promoting any legitimate effort to “restore trust
and accountability” in journalism. In the early 1980s.
Crovitz
held a
number of positions at Dow Jones and at the
Wall
Street Journal
,
eventually becoming executive vice president of the former and the
publisher of the latter before both were sold to Rupert Murdoch’s
News Corp in 2007. He is also a board member of
Business
Insider
,
which has received
over
$30 million
 from Washington
Post
 owner
Jeff Bezos in recent years.

In
addition to being a member of the Council on Foreign Relations,
Crovitz proudly notes in his bio,
available
on Newsguard’s website
,
that he has been an “editor or contributor to books published by
the American Enterprise Institute and Heritage Foundation.” Though
many
MintPress readers
are likely familiar with these two institutions, for those who are
not, it is worth pointing out that the American Enterprise Institute
(AEI) is one of the most influential neoconservative think tanks in
the country and its “scholars,” directors and fellows have
included neoconservative figures like Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Perle,
John Bolton and Frederick Kagan.

During
the George W. Bush administration, AEI was instrumental in promoting
the invasion and subsequent occupation of Iraq and has since
advocated for militaristic solutions to U.S. foreign policy
objectives and the expansion of the U.S.’ military empire as well
as the “War on Terror.”

During
the Bush years, AEI was also closely associated with the now defunct
and controversial neoconservative organization known as the Project
for a New American Century (PNAC), which presciently called, four
years before 9/11, for a “new Pearl Harbor” as needed to rally
support behind American military adventurism.

The
Heritage Foundation, like AEI, was also supportive of the war in Iraq
and has pushed for the expansion of the War on Terror and U.S.
missile defense and military empire. Its corporate donors over the
years have included Procter & Gamble, Chase Manhattan Bank, Dow
Chemical, and Exxon Mobil, among others.

Crovitz’s
associations with AEI and the Heritage Foundation, as well as his
ties to Wall Street and the upper echelons of corporate media, are
enough to make any thinking person question his commitment to being a
fair watchdog of “legitimate journalism.” Yet, beyond his
innumerable connections to neoconservatives and powerful monied
interest, Crovitz has
repeatedly
been accused
 of
inserting misinformation into his
Wall
Street Journal
 columns,
with groups like the Electronic Frontier Foundation accusing him of
repeatedly
getting his facts wrong

on NSA surveillance and other issues. Some of the blatant falsehoods
that have appeared in Crovitz’s work have never been corrected,
even when
his
own sources
called
him out
 for
misinformation.

For
example, in a
WSJ opinion
piece
that
was written by Crovitz in 2012, Crovitz was accused of making
“fantastically false claims” about the history of the internet by
the very people he had cited to support those claims.

As TechDirt wrote
at the time:

Almost
everyone he [Crovitz] sourced or credited to support his argument
that the internet was invented entirely privately at Xerox PARC and
when Vint Cerf helped create TCP/IP, has spoken out to say he’s
wrong. And that list includes both
 Vint
Cerf, himself,
 and Xerox.
Other sources, including Robert Taylor (who was there when the
internet was invented) and
 Michael
Hiltzik
,
have rejected Crovitz’s spinning of their own stories.”

The
oligarch team’s deep bench

While
Brill and Crovitz’s connections alone should be enough cause for
alarm, a cursory examination of Newsguard’s
advisory
board

makes it clear that Newsguard was created to serve the interests of
American oligarchy. Chief among Newsguard’s advisors are Tom Ridge,
the first Secretary of Homeland Security under George W. Bush and
Ret. General Michael Hayden, a former CIA director, a former NSA
director and principal at
the
Chertoff Group
,
a security consultancy seeking to “advise corporate clients and
governments, including foreign governments” on security matters
that was co-founded by former Homeland Security Secretary Michael
Chertoff, who also currently serves as the
board
chairman
 of
major weapons manufacturer BAE systems.

Another
Newsguard advisor of note is Richard Stengel, former editor
of
Time magazine,
a “
distinguished
fellow

at the Atlantic Council and Undersecretary of State for Public
Diplomacy under President Barack Obama. At a panel discussion hosted
last May by the Council on Foreign Relations, Stengel
described his
past position at the State Department as “
chief
propagandist

and also stated that he is “
not
against propaganda. Every country does it and they have to do it to
their own population and I don’t necessarily think it’s that
awful
.”

Other
Newsguard advisors include Don Baer, former White House
communications director and advisor to Bill Clinton and
current
chairman
 of
both PBS and the influential PR firm Burson Cohn & Wolfe as well
as Elise Jordan, former communications director for the National
Security Council and former speech-writer for Condoleezza Rice, as
well as the
widow of
slain journalist Michael Hastings — who was writing an exposé on
former CIA director John Brennan at the time of his suspicious death.

A
look at Newguard’s investors further illustrates the multifarious
connections between this organization and the American political and
corporate elite. While Brill and Crovitz themselves are the company’s
top investors, one of Newsguard’s
most
important investors
 is
the Publicis Groupe. Publicis is the
third
largest
 global
communications company in the world, with more than 80,000 employees
in over 100 countries and an annual revenue of over €9.6 billion
($10.98 billion) in 2017. It is no stranger to controversy, as one of
its subsidiaries,
Qorvis,
recently came under fire for
exploiting U.S.
veterans at the behest of the Saudi government and also helped the
Saudi government to “
whitewash
its human rights record and its genocidal war in Yemen after
receiving $6 million from the Gulf Kingdom in 2017.

Furthermore,
given its size and influence, it is unsurprising that the Publicis
Groupe counts many powerful corporations and governments among its
clientele. Some of its
top
clients
 in
2018 included pharmaceutical giants Eli Lilly, Merck, Pfizer and
Bayer/Monsanto as well as Starbucks, Procter & Gamble, McDonalds,
Kraft Heinz, Burger King, and the governments of Australia and Saudi
Arabia. Given its influential role in funding Newsguard, it is
reasonable to point out the potential conflict of interest posed by
the fact that sites that accurately report on Publicis’ powerful
clients — but generate bad publicity — could be targeted for such
reports in Newsguard’s ranking.

In
addition to the Publicis Groupe, another major investor in Newsguard
is the Blue Haven Initiative, which is the venture capital “impact
investment” fund of the
wealthy
Pritzker family
 —
one of the top 10 wealthiest families in the U.S., best known as the
owners of the Hyatt Hotel chain and for being the
second
largest
 financial
contributors to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.

Other
top investors include
John
McCarter
,
a long-time executive at U.S. government contractor Booz Allen
Hamilton, as well as
Thomas
Glocer
,
former CEO of Reuters and a member of the boards of pharmaceutical
giant Merck & Co., financial behemoth Morgan Stanley, and the
Council on Foreign Relations, as well as a member of the Atlantic
Council’s International Advisory Board.

Through
these investors, Newsguard managed to raise
$6
million
 to
begin its ranking efforts in March of 2018. Newsguard’s actual
revenues and financing, however, have not been disclosed despite the
fact that it requires the sites it ranks to disclose their funding.
In a display of pure hypocrisy, Newsguard’s United States
Securities and Exchange Commission
Form
D
 —
which was filed March 5, 2018 — states that the company “declined
to disclose” the size of its total revenue.

Why
give folks a choice?

While
even a quick glance at its advisory board alone would be enough for
many Americans to decline to install Newsguard’s browser extension
on their devices, the danger of Newsguard is the fact that it is
diligently working to make the adoption of its app
involuntary.
Indeed, if voluntary adoption of Newsguard’s app were the case,
there would likely be little cause for concern, given that its
website attracts barely more than
300
visits per month
 and
its social-media following is relatively small, with just over
2,000
Twitter
followers
 and
barely 500
Facebook
likes
 at
the time of this article’s publication.

To
illustrate its slip-it-under-the-radar strategy, Newsguard has gone
directly to state governments to push its browser extension onto
entire state public library systems, even though its website suggests
that individual public libraries are welcome to install the extension
if they so choose. The first state to install Newsguard on
all
of its public library computers
 across
its 51 branches was the state of Hawaii — which was the first to
partner with Newsguard’s “news literacy initiative,” just last
month.

According
to
local
media
,
Newsguard “now works with library systems representing public
libraries across the country, and is also partnering with middle
schools, high schools, universities, and educational organizations to
support their news literacy efforts,” suggesting that these
Newsguard services targeting libraries and schools are soon to become
a compulsory component of the American library and education system,
despite Newsguard’s glaring conflicts of interest with massive
multinational corporations and powerful government power-brokers.

Notably,
Newsguard has a powerful partner that has allowed it to start finding
its way into public library and school computers throughout the
country. As part of its new “Defending Democracy” initiative,
Microsoft announced last August that it would be partnering with
Newsguard to actively market the company’s ranking app and other
services to libraries and schools throughout the country.
Microsoft’s
press
release
 regarding
the partnership states that Newsguard “will empower voters by
providing them with high-quality information about the integrity and
transparency of online news sites.”

Since
then, Microsoft has
now
added
 the
Newsguard app as a built-in feature of Microsoft Edge, its browser
for iOS and Android mobile devices, and is unlikely to stop there.
Indeed, as a
recent
report
 in
favor of Microsoft’s partnership with Newsguard noted, “we could
hope that this new partnership will allow Microsoft to add NewsGuard
to Edge on Windows 10 [operating system for computers] as well.”

Newsguard,
for its part, seems confident that its app will soon be added by
default to all mobile devices. On its website, the organization
notes
that
 “NewsGuard
will be available on mobile devices when the digital platforms such
as social media sites and search engines or mobile operating systems
add our ratings and Nutrition Labels directly.” This shows that
Newsguard isn’t expecting its rating systems to be offered as a
downloadable application for mobile devices but something that social
media sites like Facebook, search engines like Google, and mobile
device operating systems that are dominated by Apple and Google will
“directly” integrate into nearly every smartphone and tablet sold
in the United States.

Boston
Globe
 article
on Newsguard from this past October makes this plan even more clear.
The
Globe wrote at
the time:

Microsoft
has already agreed to make NewsGuard a built-in feature in future
products, and [Newsguard co-CEO] Brill said he’s in talks with
other online titans. The goal is to have NewsGuard running by default
on our computers and phones whenever we scan the Web for news.”

This
eventuality is made all the more likely given the fact that, in
addition to Microsoft, Newsguard is also closely connected to Google,
as Google has been a partner of the Publicis Groupe
since
2014
,
when the two massive companies joined Condé Nast to create a new
marketing service called La Maison that is “focused on producing
engaging content for marketers in the luxury space.” Given Google’s
power in the digital sphere as the dominant search engine, the
creator of the Android mobile operating system, and the owner of
YouTube, its partnership with Publicis means that Newsguard’s
rating system will soon see itself being promoted by yet another of
Silicon Valley’s most powerful companies.

Furthermore,
there is an effort underway to integrate Newsguard into social media
sites like Facebook and Twitter. Indeed, as Newsguard was launched,
co-CEO Brill stated that he
planned
to sell
 the
company’s ratings of news sites to Facebook and Twitter. Last
March, Brill told
CNN that
“We’re asking them [Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft and Google] to
pay a fraction of what they pay their P.R. people and their lobbyists
to talk about the problem.”

On
Wednesday, Gallup
 released
a poll
 that
will likely be used as a major selling point to social media giants.
The poll — funded by Newsguard and the Knight Foundation, which is
a top investor in Newsguard and has
recently
funded
 a
series of Gallup polls relating to online news — seems to have been
created with the intention of manufacturing consent for the
integration of Newsguard with top social media sites.

This
is because the promoted findings from the study are as follows:“89%
of users of social media sites and 83% overall want social media
sites and search engines to integrate NewsGuard ratings and reviews
into their news feeds and search results” and “69% would trust
social media and search companies more if they took the simple step
of including NewsGuard in their products.” However, a disclaimer at
the end of the poll states that the results, which were based on the
responses of 706 people each of whom received $2 to participate, “may
not be reflective of attitudes of the broader U.S adult population.”

With
trust at Facebook nose-diving and Facebook’s censorship of
independent media already well underway, the findings of this poll
could well be used to justify its integration into Facebook’s
platform. The connections of both Newsguard and Facebook to the
Atlantic Council make this seem a given.

Financial
censorship

Another
Newsguard service shows that this organization is also seeking to
harm independent media financially by targeting online revenue.
Through a service called
“Brandguard,” which
it describes as a “brand safety tool aimed at helping advertisers
keep their brands off of unreliable news and information sites while
giving them the assurance they need to support thousands of
Green-rated [i.e., Newsguard-approved] news and information sites,
big and small.”

At
the time the service was announced last November, Newsguard co-CEO
Brill stated that the company was “in discussions with the ad tech
firms, leading agencies, and major advertisers” eager to adopt a
blacklist of news sites deemed “unreliable” by Newsguard. This is
unsurprising given the leading role of the Publicis Groupe, one of
the world’s largest advertising and PR firms, has in funding
Newsguard. As a consequence, it seems likely that many, if not all,
of Publicis’ client companies will choose to adopt this blacklist
to help crush many of the news sites that are unafraid to hold them
accountable.

It
is also important to note here that Google’s connection to Publicis
and thus Newsguard could spell trouble for independent news pages
that rely on Google Adsense for some or all of their ad-based
revenue. Google Adsense has long been targeting sites
like
MintPress by
demonetizing articles for information or photographs it deemed
controversial, including
demonetizing
one article
 for
including a photo showing U.S. soldiers involved in torturing Iraqi
detainees at the infamous Abu Ghraib prison.

Since
then, Google — a U.S. military contractor — has repeatedly tried
to shutter ad access to
MintPress articles
that involve reporting that is critical of U.S. empire and military
expansion.
One
article
 that
has been repeatedly flagged by Google details how many
African-Americans have questioned whether the Women’s March has
aided or harmed the advancement of African-Americans in the United
States. Google has repeatedly claimed that the article, which was
written by African-American author and former
Washington
Post
 bureau
chief Jon Jeter, contains “dangerous content.”

Given
Google’s already established practice of targeting factual
reporting it deemed controversial through Adsense, Brandguard will
likely offer the tech giant just the excuse it needs to cut off sites
like MintPress, and other pages equally critical of
empire, altogether.

An
action plan for the genuine protection of journalism

Though
it is just getting started, Newsguard’s plan to insert its app into
every device and major social-media network is a threat to any news
site that regularly publishes information that rubs any of
Newsguard’s investors, partners or advisors the wrong way. Given
its plan to rank the English-language U.S. news sites that account
for 98 percent of U.S. digital news consumption, Newsguard’s agenda
is of the utmost concern to every independent media page active in
the United States and beyond — given Newsguard’s promise to take
its project global.

By
linking up with former CIA and NSA directors, Silicon Valley Giants,
and massive PR firms working for some of the most controversial
governments and corporations in the world, Newsguard has betrayed the
fact that it is not actually seeking to “restore trust and
accountability” in journalism, but to “restore trust and
accountability” in news outlets that protect the existing power
structure and help shield the corporate-led oligarchy and
military-industrial complex from criticism.

Not
only is it trying to tank the reputations of independent media
through its biased ranking system, Newsguard is also seeking to
attack these alternative voices financially and by slipping its
ranking system by default onto all computers and phones sold in the
U.S.

However,
Newsguard and it agenda of guarding the establishment from criticism
can be stopped. By supporting independent media and unplugging from
social media sites committed to censorship, like Facebook and
Twitter, we can strengthen the independent media community and keep
it afloat despite the unprecedented nature of these attacks on free
speech and watchdog journalism.

Beyond
that, a key way to keep Newsguard and those behind it on their toes
is to hold them to

account
by pointing out their clear conflicts of interest and hypocrisy and
by derailing the narrative they are carefully crafting that Newsguard
is “non-partisan,” “trustworthy,” and true guardians against
the scourge of “fake news.”

While
this report has sought to be a starting point for such work, anyone
concerned about Newsguard and its connections to the war machine and
corrupt corporations should feel encouraged to point out the
organization’s own conflicts of interests and shady connections via
its
Twitter and Facebook pages
and the
feedback
section
 on
Newsguard’s website. The best way to defeat this new tool of the
neocons is to put them on notice and to continue to expose Newsguard
as a guardian of empire, not a guardian of journalism.

E.e.a.
is samengevat in de z.g. Clarifying Lawful Overseas Use of Data Act
(CLOUD).

The
US Government Just Destroyed Our Privacy While Nobody Was Paying
Attention

(ANTIMEDIA) —
While the nation remained fixated on gun control and Facebook’s
violative practices last week, the U.S. government quietly codified
the CLOUD Act, its own intrusive policies on citizens’ data.

While
the massive, $1.2 trillion omnibus spending bill passed Friday
received widespread media attention, the CLOUD Act — which
lawmakers snuck into the end of the 2,300-page bill — was hardly
addressed.

The Clarifying
Lawful Overseas Use of Data Act
 (CLOUD) “updates
the rules for criminal investigators who want to see emails,
documents and other communications stored on the
internet,”
 CNET reported.
Now
law enforcement won’t be blocked from accessing someone’s Outlook
account, for example, just because Microsoft happens to store the
user’s email
on
servers in Ireland
.

The
CLOUD Act will also allow the U.S. to enter into agreements that
allow the transfer of private data from domestic servers to
investigators in other countries on a case-by-case basis, further
globalizing the ever-encroaching surveillance state. The Electronic
Frontier Foundation (EFF), which has strongly opposed the
legislation,
listed several
consequences of the bill, which it called “far-reaching” and
“privacy-upending”:

  • Enable
foreign police to collect and wiretap people’s communications from
    U.S. companies, without obtaining a U.S. warrant.

  • Allow
foreign nations to demand personal data stored in the United States,
without prior review by a judge.

  • Allow
the U.S. president to enter “executive agreements” that empower
police in foreign nations that have weaker privacy laws than the
United States to seize data in the United States while ignoring U.S.
    privacy laws.

  • Allow
foreign police to collect someone’s data without notifying them
    about it.

  • Empower
    U.S. police to grab any data, regardless if it’s a U.S. person’s
or not, no matter where it is stored.

The
bill is an update to the current MLAT (Mutual Legal Assistance
Treaty), the current framework for sharing internet user data between
countries, which both legislators and tech companies have criticized
as inefficient.

Some
tech companies, like Microsoft, have
endorsed the
new CLOUD policy. Brad Smith, the company’s president and chief
legal officer, called it  “
a
strong statute and a good compromise,”
that “gives
tech companies like Microsoft the ability to stand up for the privacy
rights of our customers around the world.”

They
echoed the sentiment of lawmakers like Orrin Hatch (R-UT). In
February, he
said of
the bill:

The
CLOUD Act bridges the divide that sometimes exists between law
enforcement and the tech sector by giving law enforcement the tools
it needs to access data throughout the world while at the same time
creating a commonsense framework to encourage international
cooperation to resolve conflicts of law.”

But
one of the biggest complaints from privacy advocates, however, it
that the new legislation places too much unmitigated power in the
hands of governments with abysmal human rights records while also
giving too much discretion to the U.S. government’s executive
branch. Noting that the executive branch will decide which countries
are human rights compliant and that those countries will then be
able to
engage in
data collection and wiretaps without any further restrictions or
oversight, the ACLU
warned:

Flip
through Amnesty International or Human Rights Watch’s recent annual
reports, and you can find a dizzying array of countries that have
ratified major human rights treaties and reflect those obligations in
their domestic laws but, in fact, have arrested, tortured and killed
people in retaliation for their activism or due to their identity.”

The
organization pointed out that no human rights organizations have
endorsed the CLOUD Act, adding that “in the case of
countries certified by the executive branch, the CLOUD Act would not
require the U.S. government to scrutinize data requests by the
foreign governments — indeed, the bill would not even require
notifying the U.S. government or a user regarding a request.”

Further,
the ACLU says, if a foreign government’s human rights record
deteriorates, there is no mechanism to revoke its access to data.
Considering the U.S.’ existing record on supporting regimes that
severely
restrict basic
rights like freedom of expression, the expanded access the CLOUD Act
provides is undoubtedly worrisome.

Also
predictable is the government’s stale justification for expanding
its power. As the CLOUD Act
claims,
it is purportedly to “
protect
public safety and combat serious crime, including terrorism”
 —
even if it further empowers governments that
support and commit said
terrorism.

In
an age where the government already engages in mass surveillance and
is eager to disable the people’s efforts to protect their privacy
through encryption technology, it is unsurprising, albeit dangerous,
that Congress continues to encroach on what little is left of
safeguards against unwarranted intrusions.

Your
Guide to Avoiding Internet Censorship of Independent News Journalism

August
25, 2017 at 10:43 am

Written
by
Whitney
Webb

There
are lots of good strategies for beating both corporate and government
Internet censors and snoops. These range from alternatives to Google,
Yahoo, Microsoft, Facebook and Twitter — to direct subscriptions to
authors and pubs — to setting up your own VPN. All are worth the
effort.

(MPN) —
While Google’s
Information Age dominance
 has
long been recognized to have some unsavory consequences, the massive
technology corporation has, in recent months, taken to directly
censoring content and traffic to a variety of independent media
outlets across the political spectrum — essentially muting the
voices of any site or author who does not toe the establishment line.

This
new offensive has coincided with Google efforts to clamp down on
“fake news” and “extremist” content, which – on its
subsidiary, YouTube – led to
 the
categorical blocking
 of
videos portraying war crimes and other disturbing events of the
Syrian conflict and Israel’s occupation of Palestine. Other
independent media figures, such as
Luke
Rudowski and Carey Wedler
,
on the popular video streaming service, saw
many
of their videos
 demonetized.

Though
the crackdown on YouTube was more obvious, the Google search engine –
the most popular in the world – is now burying or blocking
independent media sites from its search results.

Conservatives have
long claimed
 that
Google was selectively targeting their content due to the personal
political bias of the company’s executives — but now, since
Google announced its new guidelines, numerous progressive,
transparency, and anti-war websites that act as watchdogs to the
establishment have seen their traffic diminish substantially.

Counterpunch,
World Socialist Website, MintPress News, Democracy Now, American
Civil Liberties Union and Wikileaks are
 just
a handful
 of
the sites that have seen massive drops in their returns from Google
searches. The World Socialist Website alone experienced a 67 percent
decrease in returns from Google following the implementation of
Google’s new algorithm targeting so-called “fake news.”
MintPress News, however, has suffered the steepest decline, having
seen a 76 percent decrease in traffic from Google since the new
algorithm was put into effect.

Why has Google changed its search system to push down publications (left & right) critical of Washington DC?

273 replies3,658 retweets3,623 likes

Google
has its reasons for choosing to censor viewpoints that clash with or
even raise questions about the official narrative. Google shares deep
connections with the U.S.’ political powerbrokers, notably with the
CIA, which
originally
helped fund
 Google
into existence with the intention of controlling the flow of
information.

Understandably
— in light of its deep connections to those who stand the most to
lose from the actual free flow of information — Google has emerged
as a leader of the “fight” against so-called “fake news.” The
concept of “fake news” took on sudden weight following last
November’s U.S. presidential election: in the tweets and rants of
newly-elected President Donald Trump, media predictions of a Clinton
victory were ridiculed as “FAKE NEWS,” while Clinton supporters
also wound up blaming “fake news” for Clinton’s loss in the
election.

In
short order, the term became a term of derision and dismissal applied
to any and all disagreeable reporting. With the “fake news” net
cast so wide, the ground was fertile for a campaign against the
official story-challenging work of independent media — dependent
for its reach, to a far greater extent than its mainstream media
counterparts, upon the good graces of monster Internet traffic cops
such as Google.

The
following guide offers a variety of solutions and options for those
concerned with Google’s overreach and its decision to become the
Internet’s unelected “Ministry of Truth.”

Dumping
Google Search

Dominating over
80%
 of
global searches made on the Internet, Google’s chokehold on the
flow of information is undeniable. Now that its algorithm has been
shown to target news sites critical of the establishment on both
sides of the aisle, finding an alternative becomes an essential task
irrespective of one’s political leaning.

However,
don’t expect other brand name search engines like Microsoft’s
Bing or Yahoo to come to the rescue, as these too
 have
been caught
 censoring
search results in the past. Microsoft, in particular, is very
untrustworthy, given its
 eager
participation
 in
the NSA’s PRISM surveillance program — where it illegally shared
the Internet user data, including search queries, of U.S. citizens
without their knowledge.

Given
its willingness to cooperate with the government against the interest
of American citizens, Microsoft would be perhaps more willing even
than Google to censor access to so-called “fake news.”

Yahoo
is little better, as it too was an early adopter of the PRISM
surveillance program, second only to Microsoft. Like Microsoft,

Thankfully,
as far as search engines go, there are other options available that
not only respect your privacy but also offer fairer searches,
including some features that even Google doesn’t offer.

DuckDuckGo

Of
all the viable Google alternatives,
DuckDuckGo is
the most well-known, having been promoted by PCMag.com, the Guardian,
and The New York Times as a “long-term” threat to Google’s
search dominance. It was even one of the top 50 sites of 2011,
according to Time magazine.

However,
the “mainstream” accolades are, in this case, well-deserved.
DuckDuckGo is best known for its motto
the
search engine that doesn’t track you,” complete with
Tor
browser
 functionality. While
this is a clear boon for privacy enthusiasts – or anyone concerned
about illegal NSA spying – it also results in search results that
are not filtered based on your search history. In other words, users
are more likely to be presented with search results that challenge
their existing ideas.

DuckDuckGo
also boasts
an
impressive search algorithm
 that
excludes Google results but includes results from other well-known
search engines, mixed with the data obtained by DuckDuckGo’s
own
 web
crawler
 bot.
The results are filtered for spam and re-ordered using its trademark
“Instant Answers” platform, which places high-quality answers
above other results and advertisements. The “Instant Answers”
platform gathers answers provided by top popular websites, like
Wikipedia, in addition to
 community-built answers.

For
those tech-savvy users who don’t trust the spam filtering or even
the “Instant Answer” platform, these functions — as well as
DuckDuckGo itself — is open-source and also offers
 DuckDuckHack,
where users can create their own plug-ins for use in DuckDuckGo and
even help improve the search engine overall.

For
less savvy tech users, DuckDuckGo conveniently functions like any
other search engine, in addition to providing several features
 even
Google doesn’t offer.
 It
also has a search app for both iPhone and Android, as well as
plug-ins for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, and offers support in
several languages.

Ixquick/StartPage

Ixquick is
an American/Dutch meta-search engine, meaning it
 simultaneously
searches
 multiple
databases and other search engines
,
including Google, across the Internet. It uses a “star system” to
rank search results, placing a star next to each result for every
search engine that ranks that result as one of its 10 best for a
given search. A five-star result, for example, means that five search
engines considered that result to be among the 10 most relevant.

Ixquick
— which has now merged with its subsidiary, StartPage — also
tackles the issue of privacy by not storing user-specific details
such as cookies or past search results. Like DuckDuckGo, Ixquick
offers unfiltered search results generated by Google’s
“personalized” searches. Privacy enthusiasts may recognize
Ixquick as the default search engine for the Tor browser.

Ixquick
is supported in 17 languages and offers a plug-in for Mozilla
Firefox. They also offer a privacy-minded, encrypted email server
called
StartMail.

Gibiru

Gibiru,
like the aforementioned search engines, prides itself on offering
maximum privacy. It avoids tracking its users by providing anonymous
and encrypted searches. It describes itself as “the preferred
Search Engine for Patriots” and offers non-personalized, anonymous
web results while emphasizing the disdain of its developers for the
NSA. Part of what sets Gibiru apart is its claim to offer
“uncensored” searches, as their web crawlers intentionally
include pages that Google has blocked or buried in its search
results.

Gibiru
also has a unique feature called “Uncensored News.” In addition
to aggregating results from other search engines, Gibiru adds its own
algorithm that specifically looks for results from independent media
outlets, particularly those that tend to “promote ‘alternative’
views from the mainstream.”

Recognizing
that mainstream media results are picked up by Google and Bing,
Gibiru does not use its bandwidth searching through these results.
Even up-and-coming independent media sites can gain inclusion in
Uncensored News results by communicating with the Gibiru team.

Gibiru
offers both a toolbar and a plugin for Mozilla Firefox.

Subscribe
directly to your favorite pages

Though
the above search engines can assist in more accurate and less
censored internet searches, the best way to get news you trust is
directly from the source. Anyone who reads independent media
eventually develops preferences for certain sites and authors whose
content they consistently find reliable and interesting.

If
you are concerned with Google’s clampdown on independent media, the
most surefire way to ensure your access to the sites you enjoy is by
subscribing directly to them via email. Most independent media pages
offer you the option to subscribe to their mailing lists, where you
receive their top stories on a daily basis. Some pages charge for
subscriptions, but most – such as
 MintPress
News’ Daily Digest
 –
are free and allow you to unsubscribe at any time. Some websites,
including MintPress,
 also
offer apps
 for
Android or iPhone, which allow users direct and convenient access to
the content of those pages.

If
you are concerned that all of the newsletters and stories of the
pages you want to follow will clutter your email, there are several
good options. Some mail servers allow you to label certain types of
incoming mail, and creating a specific label for “news” can
streamline the process of following all of your favorite pages in one
place. Alternatively, you can create an email account dedicated to
news in order to keep it separate from email accounts more focused on
work or socializing.

In
some cases, however, your favorite writers may not regularly publish
in the same place, making their work difficult to follow via email
subscription. Many authors have either their own web pages dedicated
to their work or publish on websites such as
Medium —
a site offering both free and premium membership options, that hosts
the writings of many big names in independent news from across the
political spectrum.

Signing
up for Medium allows you to follow any writer you like, even
mainstream ones – a boon, for instance, if you like a certain
writer at, say, The Wall Street Journal but don’t trust the paper
as a whole. Certain popular writers in independent media — such
Nafeez Ahmed’s
 Insurge
Intelligence
 —
even publish some of their biggest stories exclusively on Medium.

Dump
social media for news

The Wrath Of Facebook: ‘God’ Smote With 30-Day Ban For Criticizing US Military Spending

Facebook’s moderation system, which combines an automated flagging system with limited human oversight, has consistently drawn criticism, once banning a satirical account which criticized U.S. military spending.(AP/Czarek Sokolowski)

Though
some may value their Facebook account for keeping in touch with
friends and family, the social media giant is quickly becoming
unreliable for receiving news content posted by your friends as well
as the people or pages you follow. Facebook and Twitter have each
been caught censoring on several occasions and both now openly patrol
for “fake news” and “hate speech” — burying stories that
users would otherwise see, based on the recommendations of Facebook
or Twitter-approved flaggers. Many of these flaggers have been found
to publish “fake news” themselves or have a strong bias against
particular viewpoints, particularly those critical of conservative
politics.

Just
as with Google, Facebook and Twitter users can no longer be sure that
their newsfeeds contain the news they want to read, just as content
creators and publishers can no longer expect the same scope and reach
they once enjoyed on social media.

Unfortunately,
the alternatives to Facebook and Twitter are few and lack the large
user communities that make a social network successful. However,
there are two notable sites that are attempting to change that.

One
of those sites is Steemit.
 Steemit is
a social media platform that runs a blogging and social network
website built on top of a blockchain database. Steemit now boasts a
decently sized community, though it hardly compares to Facebook in
terms of daily users. Part of its success has been due to the
site’s
commitment to paying users for creating and curating popular content
on the site
.
Per the site’s system, users receive digital points (“Steem”)
depending on the success of their posts, which they can exchange for
more tangible rewards or payment via online exchanges. With $1 of
Steem
 now
worth
 just
over $4 USD, some people have found using Steemit to be both socially
and economically beneficial.

Another
potential Facebook competitor is
Minds —
an
 open
source, encrypted, and community-owned social network site that
values free speech
 and
doesn’t bow to government or advertiser pressure. It hosts
individual user profiles and blogs and creates an unfiltered
newsfeed for its users.

Members
can even be paid for posting their content if it garners a
significant number of views and upvotes. Although at present the
Minds community is tiny compared to that of Facebook, it may in years
to come become a more popular alternative, as Facebook continues to
disappoint.

Avoiding
outright censorship if and when It happens

While
censorship has
 long
been a reality
 in
countries like China, Western governments like to tout themselves as
being the guardians of freedom and the free flow of information. But
many of these governments, particularly the United States, have come
to realize in recent years that they are
 on
the losing side
 of
the “information war,” as trust in the corporate-owned media and
the government itself has sunk to historic lows.

Though
Western governments have, so far, outsourced censorship to technology
companies like Google and Facebook, there is little reason to believe
that these governments will refrain from demanding the outright
censorship of information that doesn’t toe the official line.

Take,
for example, the recent rhetoric of U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May
who, in the wake of the Manchester bombing, has pushed for censoring
“extremist propaganda” online. May’s assertion
 concerned
internet watchdog groups
,
who likened her proposals to China’s widespread censorship of the
Internet.

If
official government censorship comes to your country – or if you
suspect that it is already there – the easiest workaround is
setting up a virtual private network, or VPN. A VPN allows you to use
your computer as though it were connected to a network other than the
one you actually use. In the event of government censorship in your
country, a VPN allows you to virtually connect to a network set up in
another country where such censorship is not in effect. Using a VPN
has the added bonus of greater Internet privacy — as effective VPN
protocols encrypt your traffic, helping to protect you from
government surveillance as well as censorship.

VPNs
are provided by VPN service providers, not all of whom are created
equal. VPN providers with good reputations include Strong VPN,
SurfEasy, and TunnelBear.  Of these, TunnelBear is the least
expensive – offering a free service – and SurfEasy the most
expensive at $11.99 per month. However, the Opera browser now
includes SurfEasy’s VPN services for free. A comprehensive guide on
how to choose the best VPN service provider for your needs can be
found
 here.

Vault
7: CIA Hacking Tools Revealed

Today,
Tuesday 7 March 2017, WikiLeaks begins its new series of leaks on the
U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. Code-named “Vault 7” by
WikiLeaks, it is the largest ever publication of confidential
documents on the agency.

The
first full part of the series, “Year Zero”, comprises 8,761
documents and files from an isolated, high-security network situated
inside the CIA’s
Center
for Cyber Intelligence
 in
Langley, Virgina. It follows an introductory disclosure last month
of
CIA
targeting French political parties and candidates in the lead up to
the 2012 presidential election
.

Recently,
the CIA lost control of the majority of its hacking arsenal including
malware, viruses, trojans, weaponized “zero day” exploits,
malware remote control systems and associated documentation. This
extraordinary collection, which amounts to more than several hundred
million lines of code, gives its possessor the entire hacking
capacity of the CIA. The archive appears to have been circulated
among former U.S. government hackers and contractors in an
unauthorized manner, one of whom has provided WikiLeaks with portions
of the archive.

Year
Zero” introduces the scope and direction of the CIA’s global
covert hacking program, its malware arsenal and dozens of “zero
day” weaponized exploits against a wide range of U.S. and European
company products, include Apple’s iPhone, Google’s Android and
Microsoft’s Windows and even Samsung TVs, which are turned into
covert microphones.

Since
2001 the CIA has gained political and budgetary preeminence over the
U.S. National Security Agency (NSA). The CIA found itself building
not just its now infamous drone fleet, but a very different type of
covert, globe-spanning force — its own substantial fleet of
hackers. The agency’s hacking division freed it from having to
disclose its often controversial operations to the NSA (its primary
bureaucratic rival) in order to draw on the NSA’s hacking
capacities.

By
the end of 2016, the CIA’s hacking division, which formally falls
under the agency’s
Center
for Cyber Intelligence
 (CCI),
had over 5000 registered users and had produced more than a thousand
hacking systems, trojans, viruses, and other “weaponized”
malware. Such is the scale of the CIA’s undertaking that by 2016,
its hackers had utilized more code than that used to run Facebook.
The CIA had created, in effect, its “own NSA” with even less
accountability and without publicly answering the question as to
whether such a massive budgetary spend on duplicating the capacities
of a rival agency could be justified.

In
a statement to WikiLeaks the source details policy questions that
they say urgently need to be debated in public, including whether the
CIA’s hacking capabilities exceed its mandated powers and the
problem of public oversight of the agency. The source wishes to
initiate a public debate about the security, creation, use,
proliferation and democratic control of cyberweapons.

Once
a single cyber ‘weapon’ is ‘loose’ it can spread around the
world in seconds, to be used by rival states, cyber mafia and teenage
hackers alike.

Julian
Assange, WikiLeaks editor stated that “There is an extreme
proliferation risk in the development of cyber ‘weapons’.
Comparisons can be drawn between the uncontrolled proliferation of
such ‘weapons’, which results from the inability to contain them
combined with their high market value, and the global arms trade. But
the significance of “Year Zero” goes well beyond the choice
between cyberwar and cyberpeace. The disclosure is also exceptional
from a political, legal and forensic perspective.”

Wikileaks
has carefully reviewed the “Year Zero” disclosure and published
substantive CIA documentation while avoiding the distribution of
‘armed’ cyberweapons until a consensus emerges on the technical
and political nature of the CIA’s program and how such ‘weapons’
should analyzed, disarmed and published.

Wikileaks
has also decided to
redact and
anonymise some identifying information in “Year Zero” for in
depth analysis. These redactions include ten of thousands of CIA
targets and attack machines throughout Latin America, Europe and the
United States. While we are aware of the imperfect results of any
approach chosen, we remain committed to our publishing model and note
that the quantity of published pages in “Vault 7” part one (“Year
Zero”) already eclipses the total number of pages published over
the first three years of the Edward Snowden NSA leaks.

Analysis

CIA
malware targets iPhone, Android, smart TVs

CIA
malware and hacking tools are built by EDG (Engineering Development
Group), a software development group within CCI (Center for Cyber
Intelligence), a department belonging to the CIA’s DDI (Directorate
for Digital Innovation). The DDI is one of the five major
directorates of the CIA (see this
 organizational
chart
 of
the CIA for more details).

The
EDG is responsible for the development, testing and operational
support of all backdoors, exploits, malicious payloads, trojans,
viruses and any other kind of malware used by the CIA in its covert
operations world-wide.

The
increasing sophistication of surveillance techniques has drawn
comparisons with George Orwell’s 1984, but “Weeping Angel”,
developed by the CIA’s
Embedded
Devices Branch (EDB)
,
which infests smart TVs, transforming them into covert microphones,
is surely its most emblematic realization.

The
attack against
Samsung
smart TVs
 was
developed in cooperation with the United Kingdom’s MI5/BTSS. After
infestation, Weeping Angel places the target TV in a ‘Fake-Off’
mode, so that the owner falsely believes the TV is off when it is on.
In ‘Fake-Off’ mode the TV operates as a bug, recording
conversations in the room and sending them over the Internet to a
covert CIA server.

As
of October 2014 the CIA was also looking at
infecting
the vehicle control systems used by modern cars and trucks
.
The purpose of such control is not specified, but it would permit the
CIA to engage in nearly undetectable assassinations.

The
CIA’s Mobile Devices Branch (MDB) developed
numerous
attacks to remotely hack and control popular smart phones
.
Infected phones can be instructed to send the CIA the user’s
geolocation, audio and text communications as well as covertly
activate the phone’s camera and microphone.

Despite
iPhone’s minority share (14.5%) of the global smart phone market in
2016, a specialized unit in the CIA’s Mobile Development Branch
produces malware to infest, control and exfiltrate data from
iPhones
and other Apple products running iOS, such as iPads
.
CIA’s arsenal includes
numerous
local and remote “zero days”
 developed
by CIA or obtained from GCHQ, NSA, FBI or purchased from cyber arms
contractors such as Baitshop. The disproportionate focus on iOS may
be explained by the popularity of the iPhone among social, political,
diplomatic and business elites.

similar
unit targets Google’s Android which is used to run the majority of
the world’s smart phones (~85%) including Samsung, HTC and Sony
.
1.15 billion Android powered phones were sold last year. “Year
Zero” shows that as of 2016
the
CIA had 24 “weaponized” Android “zero days”
 which
it has developed itself and obtained from GCHQ, NSA and cyber arms
contractors.

These
techniques permit the CIA to bypass the encryption of WhatsApp,
Signal, Telegram, Wiebo, Confide and Cloackman by hacking the “smart”
phones that they run on and collecting audio and message traffic
before encryption is applied.

CIA
malware targets Windows, OSx, Linux, routers

The
CIA also runs a very substantial effort to infect and
control
Microsoft
Windows users
 with
its malware. This includes multiple local and remote weaponized “zero
days”, air gap jumping viruses such as
“Hammer
Drill”
 which
infects software distributed on CD/DVDs,
infectors
for removable media such as USBs
,
systems to
hide
data in images
 or
in covert disk areas (
 “Brutal
Kangaroo”
)
and to
keep
its malware infestations going
.

Many
of these infection efforts are pulled together by the CIA’s
Automated
Implant Branch (AIB)
,
which has developed several attack systems for automated infestation
and control of CIA malware, such as “Assassin” and “Medusa”.

Attacks
against Internet infrastructure and webservers are developed by the
CIA’s
Network
Devices Branch (NDB)
.

The
CIA has developed automated multi-platform malware attack and control
systems covering Windows, Mac OS X, Solaris, Linux and more, such as
EDB’s “HIVE” and the related “Cutthroat” and “Swindle”
tools, which are
described
in the examples section below
.

CIA
‘hoarded’ vulnerabilities (“zero days”)

In
the wake of Edward Snowden’s leaks about the NSA, the U.S.
technology industry secured a commitment from the Obama
administration that the executive would disclose on an ongoing basis
— rather than hoard — serious vulnerabilities, exploits, bugs or
“zero days” to Apple, Google, Microsoft, and other US-based
manufacturers.

Serious
vulnerabilities not disclosed to the manufacturers places huge
swathes of the population and critical infrastructure at risk to
foreign intelligence or cyber criminals who independently discover or
hear rumors of the vulnerability. If the CIA can discover such
vulnerabilities so can others.

The
U.S. government’s commitment to the
Vulnerabilities
Equities Process
 came
after significant lobbying by US technology companies, who risk
losing their share of the global market over real and perceived
hidden vulnerabilities. The government stated that it would disclose
all pervasive vulnerabilities discovered after 2010 on an ongoing
basis.

Year
Zero” documents show that the CIA breached the Obama
administration’s commitments. Many of the vulnerabilities used in
the CIA’s cyber arsenal are pervasive and some may already have
been found by rival intelligence agencies or cyber criminals.

As
an example, specific CIA malware revealed in “Year Zero” is able
to penetrate, infest and control both the Android phone and iPhone
software that runs or has run presidential Twitter accounts. The CIA
attacks this software by using undisclosed security vulnerabilities
(“zero days”) possessed by the CIA but if the CIA can hack these
phones then so can everyone else who has obtained or discovered the
vulnerability. As long as the CIA keeps these vulnerabilities
concealed from Apple and Google (who make the phones) they will not
be fixed, and the phones will remain hackable.

The
same vulnerabilities exist for the population at large, including the
U.S. Cabinet, Congress, top CEOs, system administrators, security
officers and engineers. By hiding these security flaws from
manufacturers like Apple and Google the CIA ensures that it can hack
everyone &mdsh; at the expense of leaving everyone hackable.

Cyberwar’
programs are a serious proliferation risk

Cyber
‘weapons’ are not possible to keep under effective control.

While
nuclear proliferation has been restrained by the enormous costs and
visible infrastructure involved in assembling enough fissile material
to produce a critical nuclear mass, cyber ‘weapons’, once
developed, are very hard to retain.

Cyber
‘weapons’ are in fact just computer programs which can be pirated
like any other. Since they are entirely comprised of information they
can be copied quickly with no marginal cost.

Securing
such ‘weapons’ is particularly difficult since the same people
who develop and use them have the skills to exfiltrate copies without
leaving traces — sometimes by using the very same ‘weapons’
against the organizations that contain them. There are substantial
price incentives for government hackers and consultants to obtain
copies since there is a global “vulnerability market” that will
pay hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars for copies of such
‘weapons’. Similarly, contractors and companies who obtain such
‘weapons’ sometimes use them for their own purposes, obtaining
advantage over their competitors in selling ‘hacking’ services.

Over
the last three years the United States intelligence sector, which
consists of government agencies such as the CIA and NSA and their
contractors, such as Booze Allan Hamilton, has been subject to
unprecedented series of data exfiltrations by its own workers.

A
number of intelligence community members not yet publicly named have
been arrested or subject to federal criminal investigations in
separate incidents.

Most
visibly, on February 8, 2017 a U.S. federal grand jury indicted
Harold T. Martin III with 20 counts of mishandling classified
information. The Department of Justice alleged that it seized some
50,000 gigabytes of information from Harold T. Martin III that he had
obtained from classified programs at NSA and CIA, including the
source code for numerous hacking tools.

Once
a single cyber ‘weapon’ is ‘loose’ it can spread around the
world in seconds, to be used by peer states, cyber mafia and teenage
hackers alike.

U.S.
Consulate in Frankfurt is a covert CIA hacker base

In
addition to its operations in Langley, Virginia the CIA also uses the
U.S. consulate in Frankfurt as a covert base for its hackers covering
Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

CIA
hackers operating out of the Frankfurt consulate (
 “Center
for Cyber Intelligence Europe”
 or
CCIE) are given diplomatic (“black”) passports and State
Department cover.
The
instructions for incoming CIA hackers
 make
Germany’s counter-intelligence efforts appear inconsequential:
“Breeze through German Customs because you have your
cover-for-action story down pat, and all they did was stamp your
passport”

Your
Cover Story (for this trip)

Q: Why are you
here?
A: Supporting technical consultations at the
Consulate.

Two
earlier WikiLeaks publications give further detail on CIA approaches
to
customs and secondary
screening procedures
.

Once
in Frankfurt CIA hackers can travel without further border checks to
the 25 European countries that are part of the Shengen open border
area — including France, Italy and Switzerland.

A
number of the CIA’s electronic attack methods are designed for
physical proximity. These attack methods are able to penetrate high
security networks that are disconnected from the internet, such as
police record database. In these cases, a CIA officer, agent or
allied intelligence officer acting under instructions, physically
infiltrates the targeted workplace. The attacker is provided with a
USB containing malware developed for the CIA for this purpose, which
is inserted into the targeted computer. The attacker then infects and
exfiltrates data to removable media. For example, the CIA attack
system
Fine
Dining
,
provides 24 decoy applications for CIA spies to use. To witnesses,
the spy appears to be running a program showing videos (e.g VLC),
presenting slides (Prezi), playing a computer game (Breakout2, 2048)
or even running a fake virus scanner (Kaspersky, McAfee, Sophos). But
while the decoy application is on the screen, the underlaying system
is automatically infected and ransacked.

How
the CIA dramatically increased proliferation risks

In
what is surely one of the most astounding intelligence own goals in
living memory, the CIA structured its classification regime such that
for the most market valuable part of “Vault 7” — the CIA’s
weaponized malware (implants + zero days), Listening Posts (LP), and
Command and Control (C2) systems — the agency has little legal
recourse.

The
CIA made these systems unclassified.

Why
the CIA chose to make its cyberarsenal unclassified reveals how
concepts developed for military use do not easily crossover to the
‘battlefield’ of cyber ‘war’.

To
attack its targets, the CIA usually requires that its implants
communicate with their control programs over the internet. If CIA
implants, Command & Control and Listening Post software were
classified, then CIA officers could be prosecuted or dismissed for
violating rules that prohibit placing classified information onto the
Internet. Consequently the CIA has secretly made most of its cyber
spying/war code unclassified. The U.S. government is not able to
assert copyright either, due to restrictions in the U.S.
Constitution. This means that cyber ‘arms’ manufactures and
computer hackers can freely “pirate” these ‘weapons’ if they
are obtained. The CIA has primarily had to rely on obfuscation to
protect its malware secrets.

Conventional
weapons such as missiles may be fired at the enemy (i.e into an
unsecured area). Proximity to or impact with the target detonates the
ordnance including its classified parts. Hence military personnel do
not violate classification rules by firing ordnance with classified
parts. Ordnance will likely explode. If it does not, that is not the
operator’s intent.

Over
the last decade U.S. hacking operations have been increasingly
dressed up in military jargon to tap into Department of Defense
funding streams. For instance, attempted “malware injections”
(commercial jargon) or “implant drops” (NSA jargon) are being
called “fires” as if a weapon was being fired. However the
analogy is questionable.

Unlike
bullets, bombs or missiles, most CIA malware is designed to live for
days or even years after it has reached its ‘target’. CIA malware
does not “explode on impact” but rather permanently infests its
target. In order to infect target’s device, copies of the malware
must be placed on the target’s devices, giving physical possession
of the malware to the target.

To
exfiltrate data back to the CIA or to await further instructions the
malware must communicate with CIA Command & Control (C2) systems
placed on internet connected servers. But such servers are typically
not approved to hold classified information, so CIA command and
control systems are also made unclassified.

A
successful ‘attack’ on a target’s computer system is more like
a series of complex stock maneuvers in a hostile take-over bid or the
careful planting of rumors in order to gain control over an
organization’s leadership rather than the firing of a weapons
system. If there is a military analogy to be made, the infestation of
a target is perhaps akin to the execution of a whole series of
military maneuvers against the target’s territory including
observation, infiltration, occupation and exploitation.

Evading
forensics and anti-virus

A
series of standards lay out CIA malware infestation patterns which
are likely to assist forensic crime scene investigators as well as
Apple, Microsoft, Google, Samsung, Nokia, Blackberry, Siemens and
anti-virus companies attribute and defend against attacks.

Tradecraft
DO’s and DON’Ts”
 contains
CIA rules on how its malware should be written to avoid fingerprints
implicating the “CIA, US government, or its witting partner
companies” in “forensic review”. Similar secret standards cover
the
use
of encryption to hide CIA hacker and malware
communication
 (pdf), describing
targets & exfiltrated data
 (pdf)
as well as
executing
payloads
 (pdf)
and
persisting (pdf)
in the target’s machines over time.

CIA
hackers developed successful attacks against most well known
anti-virus programs. These are documented in
AV
defeats
Personal
Security Products
Detecting
and defeating PSPs
 and PSP/Debugger/RE
Avoidance
.
For example, Comodo was defeated by
CIA
malware placing itself in the Window’s “Recycle Bin”
.
While Comodo 6.x has a
“Gaping
Hole of DOOM”
.

CIA
hackers discussed what the NSA’s “Equation Group” hackers did
wrong and
how
the CIA’s malware makers could avoid similar exposure
.

Examples

The
CIA’s Engineering Development Group (EDG) management system
contains around 500 different projects (only some of which are
documented by “Year Zero”) each with their own sub-projects,
malware and hacker tools.

The
majority of these projects relate to tools that are used for
penetration, infestation (“implanting”), control, and
exfiltration.

Another
branch of development focuses on the development and operation of
Listening Posts (LP) and Command and Control (C2) systems used to
communicate with and control CIA implants; special projects are used
to target specific hardware from routers to smart TVs.

Some
example projects are described below, but see
the
table of contents
 for
the full list of projects described by WikiLeaks’ “Year Zero”.

UMBRAGE

The
CIA’s hand crafted hacking techniques pose a problem for the
agency. Each technique it has created forms a “fingerprint” that
can be used by forensic investigators to attribute multiple different
attacks to the same entity.

This
is analogous to finding the same distinctive knife wound on multiple
separate murder victims. The unique wounding style creates suspicion
that a single murderer is responsible. As soon one murder in the set
is solved then the other murders also find likely attribution.

The
CIA’s
Remote
Devices Branch
‘s UMBRAGE
group
 collects
and maintains
a
substantial library
 of
attack techniques ‘stolen’ from malware produced in other states
including the Russian Federation.

With
UMBRAGE and related projects the CIA cannot only increase its total
number of attack types but also misdirect attribution by leaving
behind the “fingerprints” of the groups that the attack
techniques were stolen from.

UMBRAGE
components cover keyloggers, password collection, webcam capture,
data destruction, persistence, privilege escalation, stealth,
anti-virus (PSP) avoidance and survey techniques.

Fine
Dining

Fine
Dining comes with a standardized questionnaire i.e menu that CIA case
officers fill out. The questionnaire is used by the agency’s OSB
(
Operational
Support Branch
)
to transform the requests of case officers into technical
requirements for hacking attacks (typically “exfiltrating”
information from computer systems) for specific operations. The
questionnaire allows the OSB to identify how to adapt existing tools
for the operation, and communicate this to CIA malware configuration
staff. The OSB functions as the interface between CIA operational
staff and the relevant technical support staff.

Among
the list of possible targets of the collection are ‘Asset’,
‘Liason Asset’, ‘System Administrator’, ‘Foreign
Information Operations’, ‘Foreign Intelligence Agencies’ and
‘Foreign Government Entities’. Notably absent is any reference to
extremists or transnational criminals. The ‘Case Officer’ is also
asked to specify the environment of the target like the type of
computer, operating system used, Internet connectivity and installed
anti-virus utilities (PSPs) as well as a list of file types to be
exfiltrated like Office documents, audio, video, images or custom
file types. The ‘menu’ also asks for information if recurring
access to the target is possible and how long unobserved access to
the computer can be maintained. This information is used by the CIA’s
‘JQJIMPROVISE’ software (see below) to configure a set of CIA
malware suited to the specific needs of an operation.

Improvise
(JQJIMPROVISE)

Improvise’
is a toolset for configuration, post-processing, payload setup and
execution vector selection for survey/exfiltration tools supporting
all major operating systems like Windows (Bartender), MacOS (JukeBox)
and Linux (DanceFloor). Its configuration utilities like Margarita
allows the NOC (Network Operation Center) to customize tools based on
requirements from ‘Fine Dining’ questionairies.

HIVE

HIVE
is a multi-platform CIA malware suite and its associated control
software. The project provides customizable implants for Windows,
Solaris, MikroTik (used in internet routers) and Linux platforms and
a Listening Post (LP)/Command and Control (C2) infrastructure to
communicate with these implants.

The
implants are configured to communicate via HTTPS with the webserver
of a cover domain; each operation utilizing these implants has a
separate cover domain and the infrastructure can handle any number of
cover domains.

Each
cover domain resolves to an IP address that is located at a
commercial VPS (Virtual Private Server) provider. The public-facing
server forwards all incoming traffic via a VPN to a ‘Blot’ server
that handles actual connection requests from clients. It is setup for
optional SSL client authentication: if a client sends a valid client
certificate (only implants can do that), the connection is forwarded
to the ‘Honeycomb’ toolserver that communicates with the implant;
if a valid certificate is missing (which is the case if someone tries
to open the cover domain website by accident), the traffic is
forwarded to a cover server that delivers an unsuspicious looking
website.

The
Honeycomb toolserver receives exfiltrated information from the
implant; an operator can also task the implant to execute jobs on the
target computer, so the toolserver acts as a C2 (command and control)
server for the implant.

Similar
functionality (though limited to Windows) is provided by the
RickBobby project.

user and developer guides

FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS

Why
now?

WikiLeaks
published as soon as its verification and analysis were ready.

In
Febuary the Trump administration has issued an Executive Order
calling for a “Cyberwar” review to be prepared within 30 days.

While
the review increases the timeliness and relevance of the publication
it did not play a role in setting the publication date.

Redactions

Names,
email addresses and external IP addresses have been redacted in the
released pages (70,875 redactions in total) until further analysis is
complete.

  1. Over-redaction: Some
items may have been redacted that are not employees, contractors,
targets or otherwise related to the agency, but are, for example,
authors of documentation for otherwise public projects that are used
    by the agency.

  2. Identity
    vs. person:
the redacted names are replaced by user IDs
(numbers) to allow readers to assign multiple pages to a single
author. Given the redaction process used a single person may be
represented by more than one assigned identifier but no identifier
refers to more than one real person.

  3. Archive
    attachments (zip, tar.gz, …)
     are replaced with a PDF
listing all the file names in the archive. As the archive content is
assessed it may be made available; until then the archive is
    redacted.

  4. Attachments
    with other binary content
are replaced by a hex dump of the
content to prevent accidental invocation of binaries that may have
been infected with weaponized CIA malware. As the content is
assessed it may be made available; until then the content is
    redacted.

  5. The tens
of thousands of routable IP addresses references
     (including
more than 22 thousand within the United States) that correspond to
possible targets, CIA covert listening post servers, intermediary
and test systems, are redacted for further exclusive investigation.

  6. Binary
    files of non-public origin
are only available as dumps to
prevent accidental invocation of CIA malware infected binaries.

Organizational
Chart

The organizational
chart
 corresponds
to the material published by WikiLeaks so far.

Since
the organizational structure of the CIA below the level of
Directorates is not public, the placement of the EDG and its branches
within the org chart of the agency is reconstructed from information
contained in the documents released so far. It is intended to be used
as a rough outline of the internal organization; please be aware that
the reconstructed org chart is incomplete and that internal
reorganizations occur frequently.

Wiki
pages

Year
Zero” contains 7818 web pages with 943 attachments from the
internal development groupware. The software used for this purpose is
called Confluence, a proprietary software from Atlassian. Webpages in
this system (like in Wikipedia) have a version history that can
provide interesting insights on how a document evolved over time; the
7818 documents include these page histories for 1136 latest versions.

The
order of named pages within each level is determined by date (oldest
first). Page content is not present if it was originally dynamically
created by the Confluence software (as indicated on the
re-constructed page).

What
time period is covered?

The
years 2013 to 2016. The sort order of the pages within each level is
determined by date (oldest first).

WikiLeaks
has obtained the CIA’s creation/last modification date for each
page but these do not yet appear for technical reasons. Usually the
date can be discerned or approximated from the content and the page
order. If it is critical to know the exact time/date contact
WikiLeaks.

What
is “Vault 7”

Vault
7” is a substantial collection of material about CIA activities
obtained by WikiLeaks.

When
was each part of “Vault 7” obtained?

Part
one was obtained recently and covers through 2016. Details on the
other parts will be available at the time of publication.

Is
each part of “Vault 7” from a different source?

Details
on the other parts will be available at the time of publication.

What
is the total size of “Vault 7”?

The
series is the largest intelligence publication in history.

How
did WikiLeaks obtain each part of “Vault 7”?

Sources
trust WikiLeaks to not reveal information that might help identify
them.

Isn’t
WikiLeaks worried that the CIA will act against its staff to stop the
series?

No.
That would be certainly counter-productive.

Has
WikiLeaks already ‘mined’ all the best stories?

No.
WikiLeaks has intentionally not written up hundreds of impactful
stories to encourage others to find them and so create expertise in
the area for subsequent parts in the series. They’re there. Look.
Those who demonstrate journalistic excellence may be considered for
early access to future parts.

Won’t
other journalists find all the best stories before me?

Unlikely.
There are very considerably more stories than there are journalists
or academics who are in a position to write them.

Mijn excuus voor de belabberde vormgeving.

Rutte propageerde misdaad in Silicon Valley!!

M.a.w.: Rutte propageert misdaad……
