Oliepijpleiding in Ecuadoraanse Amazonewoud lekt voor tweede keer in twee jaar tijd gigantische hoeveelheid olie

Weer een olielek in het Ecuadoraanse Amazonewoud op de oevers van de Coca Rivier…… Weer zijn de 27.000 oorspronkelijke bewoners van het gebied de klos, het leefgebied van het Kichwa volk is zwaar vervuild, met een rivier waaruit ze geen water kunnen gebruiken, laat staan dat ze nog kunnen vissen……

De Ecuadoraanse regering en het staatsoliebedrijf OCP zijn de hoofdverantwoordelijken, zij hebben niet geluisterd naar waarschuwingen dat een nieuw lek was te verwachten na die van april 2020…… Erger nog: deze neoliberale flutregering liegt zelfs over het laatste olielek en stelt dat de rivier en het gebied verder geen vervuiling te wachten staat door dit nieuwe lek, men zou het lek onder controle hebben…. Terwijl drones al hebben laten zien dat de rivier vervuild is met olie…… (zie de foto hierboven)

Hier de pijpleiding die in 2020 zorgde voor een enorme olievervuiling. Eerder al zorgde een olievervuiling door Chevron voor grote schade aan wateren en woud, het ging destijds om 18 miljard gallon gitige olie afval dat het bedrijf weg had laten lopen in het Amazonewoud……. (1 gallon is iets meer dan 3,78 liter…….)

Chevron weigerde destijds een schadevergoeding te betalen die een Ecuadoraanse rechter het bedrijf had opgelegd….. Chevron verloor zowaar een rechtszaak in de VS tegen deze uitspraak…. (de brutaliteit voor zo’n puissant rijk bedrijf om dan te weigeren een schadevergoeding te betalen >> te schunnig voor woorden!!)

Schandelijk genoeg heeft Chevron deze zaak uiteindelijk toch gewonnen en die overwinning gaat zover dat critici vervolgd kunnen worden als ze stellen dat Chevron de door haar veroorzaakte olievervuiling moet opruimen (wat volgens deskundigen de grootste olievervuilingen ooit is, de eerste grote vervuiling in deze zaak werd veroorzaakt door Texaco, een oliebedrijf dat in 2001 wed overgenomen door Chevron)

Er loopt nu een zaak voor het Ecuadoraanse hooggerechtshof, daar een lagere ‘rechter’ de zaak van de oorspronkelijke bevolking, milieugroepen en mensenrechtenorganisaties niet ontvankelijk verklaarde…. De Kichwa en deze organisaties stellen dat er maatregelen moeten worden genomen, die toekomstige olievervuiling moeten voorkomen.

Breaking! Huge Oil Spill in Ecuador 🆘 Take Action Now

This weekend, a massive oil spill burst in Ecuador on the banks of the Coca River, as the OCP Ecuador pipeline ruptured for the second time in two years.

Over 27,000 Kichwa living downriver who are still suffering impacts of the major April 2020 oil spill off the same pipeline now face another environmental disaster. Their demands to President Lasso’s government and an urgent lawsuit in the courts fell on deaf ears, and now their worst fears have become a reality.

Indigenous and Human Rights groups WARNED that a new spill was imminent. OCP, the owner of the pipeline, and the Ecuadorian state are responsible for this travesty, putting oil and profit over the lives of the Kichwa, and the fragile Amazonian river ecosystems.

Clear evidence shows that OCP Ecuador lied and knowingly endangered Kichwa communities downriver after last week’s spill by stating in its official communication that the spill occurred “in a zone in which the tube is not directly exposed to rivers, and the flow of oil has been controlled.” Our team captured drone images clearly showing the crude oil flowing into the river. We must end the impunity!

After the lower court judge threw out their lawsuit seeking justice and urgent measures to prevent future spills after the massive April 2020 oil spill, the Kichwa brought their case before Ecuador’s highest court.

The case is still pending before Ecuador’s Constitutional Court. We need you to tell the nine justices that we CANNOT WAIT ANY LONGER! We must act NOW to prevent future devastation in the Amazon.

To the Honorable Justices of the Constitutional (Supreme) Court of Ecuador:

We, concerned citizens of the world, write to express our profound interest in a decision of global consequence that stands before your court. Your ruling in the appeal of a lower court decision to dismiss a lawsuit brought by Indigenous and human rights organizations for damages caused by Ecuador’s oil spill on April 7, 2020 will directly impact the lives of 27,000 Indigenous people living along the banks of the Coca and Napo rivers. Additionally, with this ruling, you have the opportunity to uphold the Rights of Nature and to protect the Amazon rainforest, which every human being on earth depends on to maintain a stable and life-sustaining climate.

We therefore submit this Amicus Curiae or “friends of the court” letter to urge a just and lawful outcome. At least 15,800 barrels (664,000 gallons) of crude oil and other pollutants spilled into Amazon rivers and tributaries as a result of the rupture of the Trans-Ecuadorian Oil Pipeline System (SOTE) and the Heavy Crude Oil Pipeline (OCP), and yet the Ecuadorian government and oil companies have thus far evaded adequate remediation, remedies for affected peoples, and precautions to avoid another spill. This was an entirely avoidable catastrophe— one that is likely to occur again if justice is not served in this appeal.

Evidence shows that the government and oil companies were well-advised that increased soil erosion along the riverbanks could cause a pipeline rupture. There was no alert system in place to warn downriver communities about contamination from the spill, nor were they consulted on the companies’ remediation plan. In the middle of a global pandemic and national lockdown, affected communities were provided with woefully inadequate emergency food and water rations, and five months later there is still visible contamination along the riverbanks.

De ploertenstreken van ultrarechtse rotzakken als Bolsonaro en de Ecuadoraanse president Guillermo Lasso kennen werkelijk geen grenzen meer, de eerste beloofde al bij zijn onterechte overwinning van de presidentsverkiezingen in Brazilië* dat wat hem betreft het hele Braziliaanse Amazonewoud platgegooid mag worden voor economisch gewin….. Lasso volgt zijn grote voorbeeld Bolsonaro en heeft onlangs laten weten dat hij een meer dan verdubbeling wenst op het winnen van olie en op de exploitatie van mijnbouw in het Amazonewoud…..

Het voorgaande ondanks dat oliewinning en mijnbouw al grote gebieden van de oorspronkelijke volkeren (‘indianen’) zo zwaar hebben vervuild dat ze onbewoonbaar zijn geworden….. Voorts heeft het personeel van mijnbouwfirma’s en oliemaatschappijen lak aan de oorspronkelijke bevolking en wel op zo’n manier dat ze deze mensen zelfs vermoorden…… Met economische ontwikkeling van het gebied dat tot de oorspronkelijke volkeren behoort, wordt in feite de genocide op deze volkeren voortgezet, een genocide die begon toen de eerste witte Europeanen voet op het gebied van deze volkeren hebben gezet……

Voorts worden de woorden van Bolsonaro en Lasso door psychopaten zo begrepen dat ze delen van het oerwoud platbranden om daar ‘economisch activiteiten’ te ontwikkelen, zoals bijvoorbeeld de teelt van soja voor de enorme Nederlandse veestapel…….Dan wel kapt men grote delen van het woud om het illegaal verkregen hout te verkopen, ‘met een beetje geluk’ hangen ze daar zelfs een label aan wat aangeeft dat dit hout duurzaam is gekapt…….. Dat laatste is toch al een gotspe, de wereld heeft juist bossen nodig en het aanplanten van nieuwe bomen vergt weer een paar decennia voordat de nieuwe aanplant behoorlijke hoeveelheden CO2 kan opslaan, kortom als met palmolie (waarvoor ook oerwoud wordt verbrand) kan houtkap nooit en te nimmer duurzaam zijn!!! (vergeet daarbij niet dat het verbranden van hout als biomassa in steenkoolcentrales en biomassacentrales nog een fractie vuiler is dan het verbranden van alleen steenkool……)

Kortom met economische ontwikkeling van het Amazonewoud worden niet alleen de oorspronkelijke volkeren bedreigd in hun voortbestaan, maar wordt ook de klimaatverandering op een enorme manier aangejaagd, waarmee zelfs het voortbestaan van de gehele mensheid groot gevaar loopt……

(er staat dat je dan aan de beweging deelneemt, echter het is niet meer en minder dan een petitie) Het moet eindelijk afgelopen zijn met het vernielen van oerwoud, waar het Amazonewoud al zo is aangetast dat het bij tijd en wijle netto veel meer CO2 uitstoot dan het op kan nemen……. (als de bosbranden weer eens een hoogtepunt bereiken, wat jaar in jaar uit gebeurt…..)

In a series of recent decrees, Ecuador’s right wing President Guillermo Lasso pledged to double down on mining and to increase oil production by 500,000 barrels per day. These decrees would expand operations across Indigenous territories, and further escalate the intensifying global climate crisis.

As the Indigenous movement faces this very concrete, hostile threat, the path becomes increasingly clear, and increasingly urgent– Ecuador’s Constitutional Court must guarantee Indigenous peoples’ right to Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC).

ING, Rabobank en BNP Paribas financieren de oliewinning in het Amazonegebied: u wordt opgelicht!!

Tijdens de Coronacrisis, april dit jaar werd een groot gebied met olie vervuild in het Ecuadoraanse deel van het Amazonewoud, inclusief rivieren voor watergebruik….. ‘Maar liefst’ 15.800 vaten (1 vat is ongeveer 159 liter…..) hebben dit gebied vervuild…… De meeste olie uit dat deel van het Amazonegebied zou naar de VS gaan…. Uiteraard is de oorspronkelijke bevolking van dit gebied het slachtoffer van deze vervuiling, hetzelfde geldt voor de natuur…….

 Als je dacht dat deze vervuiling eenmalig was, moet ik je teleurstellen, meermaals werd de boel verkankerd in dit gebeid, al was deze olievervuiling het ergst gemeten over de afgelopen 15 jaar en als men niet stopt met de oliewinning in dit gebied, zullen er nog veel van deze rampen volgen……..

Ondanks dat banken stellen dat ze een beleid voeren met eerbiediging van de mensenrechten, duurzaamheid en het tegengaan van de klimaatverandering financieren 6 grote banken uit Europa de handel in deze olie….. De namen van de banken: ING, Rabobank, BNP Paribas, Credit Suisse, Natixis, en UBS……

Met name de Sacred Headwaters zijn vervuild met olie……

Deze banken zijn over de laatste 10 jaar verantwoordelijk voor de financiering met 10 miljard dollar voor de winning van 155 miljoen vaten olie, die van Ecuador werden vervoerd naar raffinaderijen in de VS….. Het gaat hier om een hoeveelheid olie die bij verbruik gelijk staat aan de jaarlijkse verbranding van steenkool in 17 kolencetrales…….

Zoals gezegd banken als de Rabobank en ING doen naar buiten toe alsof ze duurzaam bezig zijn en respect hebben voor mensenrechten, milieu en natuur, dat is dan ook één van de smerigste vormen van greenwashing!! Met deze valse voorstelling van zaken worden de milieubewuste klanten van deze banken opgelicht!!

Overigens las ik onlangs dat de Rabobank zich ook bezighoudt met het financieren van ‘duurzame palmolie winning’, terwijl duurzame palmolie niet bestaat, zal daar binnenkort een bericht aan besteden…..
Alweer moet ik opmerken: “Waar een klein land al niet groot in kan zijn…..” GGGVD!!

Who is financing the trade of Amazon crude oil?

European banks face indigenous calls to end Amazon oil trade ...

In April, the Ecuadorian Amazon region was hit by one of the worst oil spills it had experienced in over a decade. As 15,800 barrels of crude oil spilled out from ruptured pipelines, over 120,000 Ecuadorians found their rivers running thick with oil and their only source of food and water polluted – all amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pipelines that run through the Amazon Sacred Headwaters carry crude oil extracted from the rainforest and exported to international destinations – the U.S. being one of the biggest buyers. But the controversy doesn’t end there. Our groundbreaking report released today – in partnership with Amazon Watch, found six top European banks financing the trade of Amazon Sacred Headwaters crude oil from Ecuador – despite having policies on advancing human rights, sustainability, and climate change.

These banks cannot continue to finance the trade of crude oil from the Amazon Sacred Headwaters when regional Indigenous federations and local communities are calling for an immediate conditional moratorium and no further expansion of all oil production. European and other banks financing the trade of crude oil to the U.S. and beyond are complicit in Indigenous rights violations and contamination connected to the drilling and export of this oil.

Will you sign our petition calling on European banks to stop financing the trade of crude oil from the Amazon immediately and comply with the demands of Indigenous nationalities?


Our investigation led by the Stand Research group found that in the last decade, a range of banks have provided $10 billion USD in trade financing for over 155 million barrels of oil from the Ecuadorian region of the Amazon Sacred Headwaters to refineries in the U.S. The top six banks, ING, Credit Suisse, Natixis, BNP Paribas, UBS, and Rabobank alone account for 85 percent of all bank financed trade.

The 155 million barrels these institutions have helped finance contain approximately 66.65 million metric tons of CO2, which is equivalent to a staggering annual emissions from 17 coal-fired power plants. How could banks with public sustainability and climate commitments play such a pivotal role in financing the flow of oil from one of the most biodiverse places on the planet?!

That’s why these banks must publicly commit to stop financing (trade included) Amazon oil-related activities until governments in the region commit to no new expansion of oil development and a wind-down of existing wells – in line with global climate goals and collective Indigenous visions for the region. In addition, they must promote transparency of any trade financing. Plus, they must respect Indigenous sovereignty and rights, guarantee to uphold the health of local communities, and put in place safeguards to prevent future spills.

Sign the petition to demand these banks stop financing the trade of crude oil and stop supporting the destruction and degradation of the Amazon rainforest.

In August 2020, Indigenous federations in Ecuador launched a global campaign and filed legal actions calling for a moratorium on current crude oil production due to ongoing contamination and future spill risk. The ongoing resource extraction in the Amazon has made spills a common crisis in the region for the past 40 years. Although the recent oil spill in Ecuador is the biggest in 15 years, it is not the first oil spill nor will it be the last, but it’s a prime example of why drilling for oil in the Amazon needs to stop.

We’ve protected 65 million acres of forests that people thought couldn’t be saved. We’ve gone up against multinational oil, gas, and coal companies worth billions of dollars and come out victorious, blocking dozens of their projects that would have poisoned local communities and accelerated the climate crisis.
We’ve shifted billions of dollars of purchasing from corporate powerhouses like Starbucks, Staples, and Levi’s onto sustainable pathways.

Afgelopen maandag was het Columbusdag, ook in Ecuador, een dag die men daar volkomen terecht heeft omgedoopt in wat je in Nederland zou kunnen noemen, de ‘Dag van de Oorspronkelijke Bevolking’, immers met de komst van Columbus startte de genocide op de oorspronkelijke volkeren van de 3 Amerika’s……

Het IMF heeft voor de oorspronkelijke Ecuadoraanse bevolking, grotendeels het Waorani volk, de plaats ingenomen van Columbus….. Vanwege aangekondigde olieboringen in het gebied van dit volk vonden de laatste jaren grote protesten plaats, met een intensivering in de afgelopen maanden…… Ecuador ook één van de landen, waar de oorspronkelijke bevolking nog steeds wordt achtergesteld (zoals deze zin al aangaf: dit is in alle 3 Amerika’s hetzelfde….)…..
Afgelopen maandag was het ook de dag dat het Waorani volk een belangrijke overwinning behaalde, na 11 dagen protest die het land hebben verlamd, heeft het IMF het nakijken en de deal met de regering voor een lening van 4,4 miljard dollar gaat niet door!! Met de lening zou de regering van Ecuador zichzelf deels ‘buitenspel hebben gezet’ daar met die lening de Ecuadoraanse economie hervormd zou worden, privatisering van staatsbedrijven, het uitputten van de Ecuadoraanse ‘bodemschatten’ als olieboringen in het oerwoud waar de oorspronkelijke bevolking voor een groot deel woont…… Daarnaast nog een aantal hervormingen, die alleen als neoliberaal kunnen worden aangeduid, ofwel ijskoud, inhumaan, neoliberaal IMF beleid dat in het voordeel werkt van de welgestelden, de grote bedrijven en de rechtse politiek……..
De weg naar deze overwinning van het Waorani volk heeft wel een zware tol geëist, maar liefst 7 doden en duizenden mensen die gewond raakten en een evenzo grote hoeveelheid arrestaties……

Victory in Ecuador on Indigenous Peoples Day

Today marks the 527th year anniversary since the arrival of the conquistadors to the Americas – a day formerly known to many as Columbus Day is now rightfully known as Indigenous People’s Day.
And in Ecuador, the International Monetary Fund is the new Columbus.

Just yesterday, after 11 days of nationwide indigeous-led mobilizations that paralyzed the country, Ecuador’s indigenous movement compelled their government to pay heed to their demands over those of the International Monetary Fund, an important victory for indigenous organizing and pluri-national democracy, and a powerful blow to a 4.4 billion IMF-backed loan deal that seeks to restructure the Ecuadorian economy towards privatization, resource-extraction, and other severe neo-liberal economic reforms.

As the dust settles, the indigenous movement is taking stock of the high costs of this struggle, with at least 7 dead and thousands arrested or injured, as well as the road ahead to demand accountability for brutal human rights violations by the Ecuadorian government. What comes next will define the future of Ecuador and indigenous peoples for generations to come.

Waorani volk heeft 500.000 handtekeningen nodig voor het redden van hun woud en manier van leven vs. oliewinning

Het Waorani volk heeft in april dit jaar het nieuws in een groot deel van de wereld gehaald met hun overwinning in de rechtbank, die een streep zette door de verkoop van hun grond in het Amazonewoud aan een paar oliemaatschappijen, dit daar het Waorani volk niet werd gekend in die beslissing…
Echter de Ecuadoraanse regering laat het er niet bij zitten en wil hoe dan ook de grond verkopen…. Het Waorani volk had voor haar doel wereldwijd al 122.000 handtekeningen opgehaald. Om hun grondgebied en manier van leven veilig te stellen heeft men in totaal 500.000 handtekeningen nodig voor 1 juli a.s., wanneer de rechters zich opnieuw over deze zaak buigen en waar deze rechters al onder druk zijn gezet door de autocratische Ecuadoraanse regering, te beslissen in het voordeel van de oliemaffia.

Oliewinning in dergelijke oerwouden (en elders) brengen altijd een enorme vervuiling van bodem en water met zich mee, daar is geen uitzondering op te vinden…… Stop met deze waanzin!!

De oliemaatschappijen waar het hier om draait zijn Amerisur en Gulfsands Petroleum, beiden Britse bedrijven, schoften die schijt hebben aan mensenrechten en rechten van oorspronkelijke volkeren, ofwel tuig waarmee de oliemaffia afgeladen zit……

Media tonen ware gezicht door weigering Julian Assange te verdedigen

Door de weigering Assange te verdedigen, tonen de reguliere media hun ware gezicht, aldus de kop van een artikel van Caitlin Johnstone op Media.com en hieronder overgenomen van Anti-Media. Een top advocaat van de New York Times (NYT), David McCraw waarschuwde een zaal vol rechters dat de vervolging van WikiLeaks journalist Julian Assange een gevaarlijk precedent zal scheppen en zou kunnen eindigen met het beschadigen van de reguliere (massa-) media….. (ha! ha! ha! Wat er nog te beschadigen is aan de reguliere media is me een raadsel, gezien het enorme gehalte aan nepnieuws [‘fake news] en de leugens die daar dag in dag uit ten toon worden gespreid…..)
Volgens McCraw zullen wetshandhavers uiteindelijk weinig verschil kunnen zien tussen een internetplatform als WikiLeaks en mediaorganen als de New York Times en de Washington Post (WaPo)….. Lullig werden de woorden van McCraw niet gepubliceerd in ‘zijn eigen’ NYT….. (!!) Echter zolang de reguliere media de leugens van politiek en geheime diensten maar blijven herhalen, zal er geen vuiltje aan de lucht zijn…..
Het publiceren van o.a. uitgelekte gegevens die geheim werden gehouden voor het volk, is in feite de taak van de echte journalistiek, immers het is de taak van de journalistiek om de machthebbers te controleren, het volk daarover in te lichten* en het publiek tevens te leren kritisch naar de machthebbers te kijken…..
Daar wringt dan ook de schoen aldus Johnstone, de reguliere media hebben deze taken al lang bij het grofvuil gezet en schikken zich naar de eisen van overheid en degenen die deze media in handen hebben, miljardairs en beursgenoteerde bedrijven……… Niet voor niets dat de journalisten van de reguliere media Assange keer op keer demoniseren en de leugens van de politiek en geheime diensten als CIA en FBI (notoire leugenaars) over bijvoorbeeld de zogenaamde bemoeienis van Rusland met de VS verkiezingen blijven herhalen, ook al is er geen nanometer bewijs voor……

Daarover gesproken: hoorde onlangs een Belgische ‘journalist’ die het gore lef had te zeggen dat hij de ‘stapel aan bewijzen’ voor die Russische inmenging met de VS presidentsverkiezingen had gelezen, een keiharde leugen, daar die bewijzen (nog steeds) niet bestaan…..

(CJ Opinion) — Last Tuesday a top lawyer for the New York Times named David McCraw warned a room full of judges that the prosecution of Julian Assange for WikiLeaks publications would set a very dangerous precedent which would end up hurting mainstream news media outlets like NYT, the Washington Post, and other outlets which publish secret government documents.
“I think the prosecution of him would be a very, very bad precedent for publishers,” McCraw said. “From that incident, from everything I know, he’s sort of in a classic publisher’s position and I think the law would have a very hard time drawing a distinction between The New York Times and WikiLeaks.”
Do you know where I read about this? Not in the New York Times.
“Curiously, as of this writing, McCraw’s words have found no mention in the Times itself,” activist Ray McGovern wrote for the alternative media outlet Consortium News. “In recent years, the newspaper has shown a marked proclivity to avoid printing anything that might risk its front row seat at the government trough.”

So let’s unpack that a bit. It is now public knowledge that the Ecuadorian government is actively seeking to turn Assange over to be arrested by the British government. This was initially reported by RT, then independently confirmed by The Intercept, and is today full mainstream public knowledge being reported by mainstream outlets like CNN. It is also public knowledge that Assange’s asylum was granted by the Ecuadorian government due to a feared attempt to extradite him to the United States and prosecute him for WikiLeaks publications. Everyone from President Donald Trump to Attorney General Jeff Sessions to now-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to ranking House Intelligence Committee member Adam Schiff to Democratic members of the US Senate have made public statements clearly indicating that there is a US government interest in getting Assange out of the shelter of political asylum and into prison.
The New York Times is aware of this, and as evidenced by McCraw’s comments it is also aware of the dangerous precedent that such a prosecution would set for all news media publications. The New York Times editorial staff are aware that the US government prosecuting a publisher for publishing important documents that had been hidden from the public would make it impossible for the Times to publish the same kind of material without fear of the same legal repercussions. It is aware that the maneuvers being taken against Assange present a very real existential threat to the possibility of real journalism and holding power to account.
You might think, therefore, that we’d be seeing a flood of analyses and op-eds from the New York Times aggressively condemning any movement toward the prosecution of Julian Assange. You might expect all media outlets in America to be constantly sounding the alarm about this, especially since the threat is coming from the Trump administration, which outlets like the New York Timesare always eager to circulate dire warnings about. You might expect every talking head on CNN and NBC to be ominously citing Assange as the clearest and most egregious case yet of Trump’s infamous “war on the free press”. Leaving aside the issues of morality, compassion and human rights that come with Assange’s case, you might think that if for no other reason than sheer unenlightened self interest they’d be loudly and aggressively defending him.
And yet, they don’t. And the fact that they don’t shows us what they really are.

Theoretically, journalism is meant to help create an informed populace and hold power to account. That’s why it’s the only profession explicitly named in the United States Constitution, and why freedom of the press has enjoyed such constitutional protections throughout US history. The press today is failing to protect Julian Assange because it has no intention of creating an informed populace or holding power to account.
This is not to suggest the existence of some grand, secret conspiracy among US journalists. It’s just a simple fact that plutocrats own most of the US news media and hire the people who run it, which has naturally created an environment where the best way to advance one’s career is to remain perpetually inoffensive to the establishment upon which plutocrats have built their respective empires. This is why you see ambitious reporters on Twitter falling all over themselves to be the first with a pithy line that advances establishment agendas whenever breaking news presents an opportunity to do so; they are aware that their social media presence is being assessed by potential employers and allies for establishment loyalism. This also why so many of those aspiring journalists attack Assange and WikiLeaks whenever possible.
“Everyone hoping to gain admission to the cultural elite must now strenuously cultivate their social media so as to avoid controversy,” journalist Michael Tracey observed recently. “Eventually they will internalize controversy-avoidance as a virtue, not a societal imposition. Result: a more boring, conformist elite culture.”
A great way for an aspiring journalist to avoid controversy is to never, ever defend Assange or WikiLeaks on social media or in any media outlet, and certainly under no circumstances allow yourself to look like the sort of journo who might someday publish the sorts of materials that WikiLeaks publishes. An excellent way to prove yourself is to become yet another author of yet another one of the many, many smear pieces that have been written about Assange and WikiLeaks.

Mainstream media outlets and those who thrive within them have no intention of rocking the boat and losing their hard-earned privilege and access. Conservative mass media will continue to defend the US president, and liberal media will continue to defend the CIA and the FBI. Both will help advance war, ecocide, military expansionism, surveillance and police militarization, and none will leak anything that is damaging to the power structures that they have learned to serve. They will remain innocuous, uncontroversial defenders of the rich and powerful at all times.
Meanwhile, alternative media outlets are defending Assange ferociously. Just today I’ve seen articles from Consortium News, World Socialist Website, Disobedient Media, Antiwar and Common Dreams decrying the persecution of the most important government transparency advocate living today. Alternative media outlets and independent writers aren’t bound by establishment servitude, so the value of WikiLeaks is clear as day. One’s eyes are only blinded to the pernicious behaviors of power when power is signing one’s paycheck.
Mass media outlets in America and around the world have fully discredited themselves with their failure to defend a publisher who actually holds power to account and brings facts into the light of truth to create an informed populace. Every day that goes by where they don’t unequivocally condemn any attempt to prosecute Assange is another day in the pile of evidence that corporate media outlets serve power and not truth. Their silence is a tacit admission that they are nothing other than stenographers and propagandists for the most powerful forces on earth.

Stop de isolatie van Julian Assange!

Afgelopen maandag hebben Naom Chomsky, Chris Hedges, John Pilger e.a. Ecuador opgeroepen om de isolatie van Julian Assange op te heffen. Middels zogenaamde jammers heeft Ecuador het Assange onmogelijk gemaakt nog te communiceren met de buitenwereld……

Uiteraard is dit onder druk van de VS gebeurd, die Assange het liefst fiks wil straffen. Met deze isolatie is het verblijf van Assange in de Engelse Ecuadoraanse ambassade veranderd in een volledige gevangenschap……
Lullig dat de ondertekenaars van dit pleidooi niet ook Groot-Brittannië hebben opgeroepen de waanzinnige bewaking van de ambassade in Londen en de dreiging van Assanges arrestatie in te trekken (arrestatie als Assange één been buiten de ambassade zet). Assange is een klokkenluider die met het door hem opgerichte Wikileaks juist de wereldbevolking dient….

Zoals gesteld in het volgende artikel: zelfs de VN vindt de dreiging van arrestatie voor Assange onaanvaardbaar. Assange is in feite een klokkenluider die het opneemt voor de gewone mens tegen de willekeur van overheden en dan m.n. die van de grootste terreurentiteit op aarde, de VS……
Assange wordt het spreken onmogelijk gemaakt, niet in China of Saoedi-Arabië, maar midden in het westen dat boogt op de vrijheid van meningsuiting en waar men keer op keer beweerd klokkenluiders te willen beschermen, terwijl de praktijk het tegenovergestelde laat zien, een praktijk waarvan Assange wel het meest sprekende voorbeeld is……..
Vreemd ook dat men hier niet een internationale petitie van heeft gemaakt, een paar miljoen handtekeningen maken ‘net iets meer indruk…’
Maar geen gezeur, deze oproep is alvast een geweldig begin:

The Isolation of Julian Assange Must Stop

We call on the government of Ecuador to allow Julian Assange his right of freedom of speech.

If it was ever clear that the case of Julian Assange was never just a legal case, but a struggle for the protection of basic human rights, it is now.
Citing his critical tweets about the recent detention of Catalan president Carles Puidgemont in Germany, and following pressure from the US, Spanish and UK governments, the Ecuadorian government has installed an electronic jammer to stop Assange communicating with the outside world via the internet and phone. As if ensuring his total isolation, the Ecuadorian government is also refusing to allow him to receive visitors. Despite two UN rulings describing his detention as unlawful and mandating his immediate release, Assange has been effectively imprisoned since he was first placed in isolation in Wandsworth prison in London in December 2010. He has never been charged with a crime.
The Swedish case against him collapsed and was withdrawn, while the United States has stepped up efforts to prosecute him. His only “crime” is that of a true journalist — telling the world the truths that people have a right to know.
Under its previous president, the Ecuadorian government bravely stood against the bullying might of the United States and granted Assange political asylum as a political refugee. International law and the morality of human rights was on its side.
Today, under extreme pressure from Washington and its collaborators, another government in Ecuador justifies its gagging of Assange by stating that “Assange’s behaviour, through his messages on social media, put at risk good relations which this country has with the UK, the rest of the EU and other nations.”
This censorious attack on free speech is not happening in Turkey, Saudi Arabia or China; it is right in the heart of London. If the Ecuadorian government does not cease its unworthy action, it, too, will become an agent of persecution rather than the valiant nation that stood up for freedom and for free speech. If the EU and the UK continue to participate in the scandalous silencing of a true dissident in their midst, it will mean that free speech is indeed dying in Europe.
This is not just a matter of showing support and solidarity. We are appealing to all who care about basic human rights to call on the government of Ecuador to continue defending the rights of a courageous free speech activist, journalist and whistleblower.
We ask that his basic human rights be respected as an Ecuadorian citizen and internationally protected person and that he not be silenced or expelled.
If there is no freedom of speech for Julian Assange, there is no freedom of speech for any of us — regardless of the disparate opinions we hold.
We call on President Moreno to end the isolation of Julian Assange now.
