Caitlin Johnstone heeft een prachtig sarcastisch artikel geschreven waarmee ze de verkiezingen in de VS verklaart. Op uiterst humoristische manier legt ze met een vergelijking uit dat het niet uitmaakt wie je kiest als VS burger. Het is in Australië, het thuisland van Caitlin, niet veel beter, ook daar 2 partijen die af en aan het land besturen, maar ook daar bijzonder weinig verschil in politieke besluitvorming. Het gaat hier om de Australian Labor Party en de Liberal/National Coalition, te vergelijken met de Republikeinse partij en de Democratische partij in de VS.
Voorts is het zo dat in de VS de kiezer misschien kan uitmaken wie er president wordt, maar het zijn de grote bedrijven en de spuugrijke miljonairs en miljardairs, die met hun geld het beleid bepalen dat de gekozen president zal voeren….. Anders gezegd: met dit geld bepalen deze plutocraten wat een president wel of niet mag doen…. Vandaar ook dat wanneer een kandidaat een maatregel belooft in te voeren mocht zij/hij gekozen worden, er niets van terechtkomt als dit de belangen van de plutocraten en grote bedrijven (met hun grootaandeelhouders) zal schaden…. Voorts is het zo dat de kandidaat met het meeste geld voor haar/zijn campagne de meeste kans maakt president te worden…. Immers: ‘hoe moeilijk’ is het om de grote massa leugens te laten geloven als die avond na avond worden herhaald?? (zoals het nazi-beest Goebbels al stelde: als je een leugen maar vaak genoeg herhaalt, wordt deze vanzelf waarheid (vrij vertaald)…..)
Gezien het voorgaande kan je dan ook niet anders dan de conclusie trekken dat de VS allesbehalve een democratie is (om nog maar te zwijgen over de manier waarop het een groot deel van de gekleurde stemmers onmogelijk wordt gemaakt te stemmen….)
‘Erg fijn ook’ te zien hoe snel Kamala Harris haar zorgen over wat er in de Gazastrook gebeurt (niets anders dan een volledige openlijk uitgevoerde genocide op de Palestijnen door de fascistische apartheidsstaat Israël) overboord heeft gezet en zelfs ongelofelijk onbeschoft stelt dat zij voor de bescherming van Israël staat, alsof dat de onderliggende partij is…. (al was ze als vicepresident al medeplichtig aan deze genocide, vanwege de enorme leveringen van bommen, raketten en ander oorlogstuig aan deze genocidaal psychopathische gestolen staat…) ICC let op: start een strafrechtelijk onderzoek naar deze presidentskandidaat (plus één tegen ‘genocide Joe’ Biden en de voorgaande VS presidenten!!) Laat zien wat jullie gerechtshof waard is!!

Een vreemde zet van Trump tijdens zijn laatste dagen in het Witte Huis: hij heeft een groot aantal geheime FBI documenten aangaande Russiagate vrijgegeven.
Wat iedereen al had kunnen weten (vooral de reguliere media en politici in zowel de VS als de rest van het westen) is dat de voormalige Britse agent Steele van MI6 expres zaken heeft gelekt die beschadigend waren voor Trump zoals Robert Mueller al had aangetoond.
Steele had 2 klanten, Hillary Clinton en de FBI, toen de CIA met de beschuldiging kwam dat Clinton een smerig spel had gespeeld in aanloop naar de presidentsverkiezingen in 2016 (wat Bernie Sanders de nominatie tot Democratisch presidentskandidaat kostte), heeft Steele zaken gelekt die beschadigend waren voor Trump, hij deed dat om het misdadig gedrag van Clinton uit de wind te houden…….
Zoals gezegd, iedereen die een beetje oplette (zoals D66 kwaadaardigheid Ollongren met opzet niet deed) had kunnen weten dat het hele Russiagate verhaal je reinste kul was. Echter de reguliere westerse (massa-) media en de meeste politici bleven (en blijven nog) vasthouden aan het Russiagate verhaal en dat heeft nogal wat gevolgen gehad, niet alleen voor Rusland, maar ook voor de burgers in westerse landen, bij wie haat en angst werd gezaaid tegen/voor de Russen….. Rusland werd overal van beschuldigd ‘wat fout ging’ (in de ogen van politici en de afhankelijke, niet objectieve westerse reguliere media), zoals het Oekraïne referendum, het Brexit referendum en het Catalaanse onafhankelijkheidsreferendum…… D66 oplichter en kwaadaardigheid Ollongren en anderen durfden een paar maanden geleden de Russen zelfs alweer te beschuldigen van het manipuleren van de Tweede Kamerverkiezingen a.s. 17 maart, zonder ook maar een flinter aan bewijs te geven…….. (dat deed Ollongren overigens al veel eerder en dat in aanloop van de Gemeenteraardsverkiezingen van 21 maart 2018 en de Statenverkiezingen van 20 maart 2019……..)
De laatste 4 jaar hebben diezelfde media en politici Trump en Rusland valselijk beschuldigd voor het manipuleren van de presidentsverkiezingen in 2016, wat plotseling stopte toen Biden werd gekozen tot Democratisch presidentskandidaat, terwijl die media en politici moord en brand schreeuwden toen Trump stelde dat de verkiezingen van afgelopen november werden gestoken ten voordele van Biden…….

Trump declassifies all FBI documents in Russia probe

January 16, 2021 “Information Clearing House” – WASHINGTON, D.C. According to Fox Business News Lou Dobbs who today interviewed John Solomon, who was formerly an executive and editor-in-chief at The Washington Times, the remaining FBI documents on Russian collusion have been declassified and could be released as soon as Monday.
Solomon, an award-winning investigative journalist, said that the entire narrative of Trump Collusion was created and leaked to the news media to neutralize Hillary Clinton’s concern that her email scandal had not gone away.
Solomon also said while confirming to Dobbs, that indeed “he can confirm” that the President has delivered, “in a big way” on one of his last remaining promises; to authorize the release of what he said is more than a “foot high stack of documents” – those which are the ones he said the FBI has tried to keep from the public for four years.
Delivering in his final days on one of his last unfulfilled promises, President Trump is declassifying a massive trove of FBI documents showing the Russia collusion story was leaked in the final weeks of the 2016 election in an effort to counteract Hillary Clinton’s email scandal.
The memos to be released as early as Friday include FBI interviews and human source evaluation reports for two of the main informants in the Russia case, former MI6 agent Christopher Steele and academic Stefan Halper.
The president authorized the release of a foot-high stack of internal FBI and DOJ* documents that detail significant flaws in the investigation and provide a detailed timeline of when the FBI first realized the Steele dossier was problematic, multiple government officials told Just the News.
Among the bombshell revelations is an admission by Steele that he violated his confidential human source agreement with the FBI and leaked information from his dossier to the news media in the final weeks of the election because he wanted to counteract new revelations in the Hillary Clinton email scandal that were hurting her election efforts. The former foreign intelligence officer made the confession in a fall 2017 interview with agents.
Steele, who was hired by Clinton’s campaign law firm to compile anti-Trump dossiers attempting to link Trump to Russian influence, told agents he had two clients at the time — Clinton and the FBI — and chose the interests of the Democratic candidate over the bureau in leaking.
Steele told the bureau that then-FBI Director James Comey’s decision to reopen the Clinton email probe in fall 2016 triggered him to leak his dossier details in what he described as a taking-the-gloves-off moment.
The FBI interview summary makes clear that Steele, a British citizen, was allegiant to Clinton, did not like Trump and believed a Trump presidency would be negative for his homeland and thus made a decision to meddle in the U.S. election by leaking information to the news media.
The leaks, which led to Steele’s termination as an FBI informant, have been known for more than a year, but his motivation for leaking was hidden in the classified documents.
His admission that the Russia collusion narrative, later debunked by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, was injected into the public as a means of counteracting Clinton’s email scandal corroborates other information obtained by the CIA.
Late last year, the Trump administration declassified evidence showing the CIA warned President Obama and the FBI that it had intercepted intelligence indicating Hillary Clinton had personally ordered up an operation to “vilify” Trump with a false story of collusion as a m
eans of distracting from the negative publicity of her email scandal.
Multiple investigations have concluded that much of Steele’s dossier was debunked or never corroborated by the FBI and likely contained Russian disinformation planted with his sources.
The probes found the FBI wrongly continued to rely on the allegations of Russia collusion to target Trump campaign figures for investigation and failed to disclose major flaws in their investigations to the courts that had authorized surveillance warrants.
The investigation also found that Steele’s primary source of Russian intel later disowned or distanced himself from the claims attributed to him in the Steele dossier and that U.S. intelligence had concerns the source was tied to Russian intelligence.
The soon-to-be-released records also expose a tantalizing connection between Steele, his primary source and one of the Democrats’ key impeachment witnesses in the Ukraine scandal, former Trump National Security Council Russia expert Fiona Hill.
Steele divulged to the FBI that he was introduced by Hill to his primary sub-source of information for his anti-Trump dossier and that he later told Hill that the source had provided information for his now infamous memos.
The documents also will settle a long-debated question in Washington about whether the FBI’s tactics amounted to spying on the Trump campaign.
Tasking instructions the FBI gave to Halper, an academic who long worked as an FBI informant, make clear he was instructed to infiltrate the Trump campaign by posing as someone who wanted to work for the GOP nominee and then targeting campaign advisers to find out what they knew about Trump or his campaign’s ties to Russia.
Halper was specifically instructed by the FBI to focus on campaign advisers Sam Clovis, George Papadopoulos and Carter Page, in some cases recording some of their conversations, the records are expected to show.
In her impeachment testimony in 2019, Hill acknowledged she knew Steele since 2006 when he worked for MI6 and she worked for the Bush administration.
She, however, did not make any mention of introducing Steele’s primary subsource and in fact expressed her own doubts about the Steele dossier, suggesting it could very well have been Russian disinformation.
She said she held “misgivings and concern that he could have been played” by the Russians because they “would have an ax to grind against him given the job that he had previously.”
“I don’t believe it’s appropriate for him to have been hired to do this,” she testified about Steele. “I almost fell over when I discovered that he was doing this report.”

Volgens Caitlin Johnstone mag men zich inderdaad kwaad maken over het feit dat Trump de eindzege van de verkiezingen op 4 november jl. opeiste, echter de volledige reguliere (massa-) media en ‘politieke klasse’ hebben elke legitimiteit verloren om ook nog maar een letter van kritiek te leveren op het zich illegaal kronen door Trump, nadat ze de VS coup in Venezuela hebben gesteund…… (in het schrijven van Caitlin zit een fout, daar ze zegt dat deze groepen elke legitimiteit hebben verloren om een leider te veroordelen die henzelf [‘themselves’] kroonde, moet uiteraard zichzelf zijn)
Verder een mooi kort stuk waarin wordt aangegeven dat we van de Democraten niets hoeven te verwachten als Biden de nieuwe president zou worden (het artikel van Caitlin is van 5 november jl. en toen was nog niet zeker of Biden werkelijk genoeg kiesmannen zou weten te bemachtigen*). Het voorgaande daar de grote bedrijven de Biden campagne hebben gesteund en dat moet terugbetaald worden nu hij heeft gewonnen…. Zo kan het arme deel van de VS wel vergeten dat Biden veel voor hen zal doen, daar dit tegen de belangen indruist van de grote bedrijven, waar ik een paar groepen apart wil noemen: de financiële sector, de farmaceutische sector en de wapenfabrikanten (de laatste in de grootste zin van het woord, dus inclusief de fabrikanten van rollend, varend en vliegend oorlogstuig….)
Oké Biden zal iets meer doen voor het milieu en de VS weer binnen de groep landen brengen, die de klimaatakkoorden van Parijs tekenden, een verdrag waaruit de VS, ofwel klimaatscepticus Trump, zich op 4 november jl. officieel terugtrok….. Echter vergeet daarbij niet dat dit waardeloze verdrag volkomen ontoereikend is om de snelle klimaatverandering zelfs maar enigszins af te remmen, laat staan dat het leugenachtige doel wordt gehaald, om de stijging van de wereldtemperatuur tegen het eind van deze eeuw tot 1,5 graad Celsius te beperken, dat is schier onmogelijk!!
Lees het schrijven van Caitlin en bedenk dat de wereld een VS president nodig heeft die echt radicaal de boel wil veranderen, niet alleen voor het volk van de VS, maar voor de hele wereld, een president ook die een eind maakt aan de oneindige illegale oorlogen van de VS en die de meer dan 800 buitenlandse VS bases ontmantelt!! Denken dat zo’n president uit de kringen van Democraten of Republikeinen zal komen is als een fata morgana in de woestijn…….

Watching Democrats’ inability to handily defeat a crazy reality TV host in two elections is like seeing someone pick a fight with a six year-old girl and getting their ass kicked, then coming back with a bunch of their friends and watching them all get carried off on stretchers.

All the hours of post-electoral analysis you’re about to hear are just mental gymnastics to avoid confronting one very simple fact: that the way the Democratic Party has been securing funding is incompatible with securing votes. That’s the only correct answer to the question of what went wrong for the Democrats this year. They court wealthy donors who in exchange demand policies which hurt ordinary Americans. Ignore all answers besides this one.
It’s not because of inadequate outreach to this or that demographic. It’s not because of racism. It’s not because of being too “woke”. It’s not because of the Electoral College or gerrymandering. It’s because Democratic donors advance interests which hurt the Democratic base, which naturally makes the base disinclined to vote for them.
People simply are not going to support a party which does not advance their interests. If the Democratic Party were obtaining material benefits for people, they would dominate the US government. But that would mean taking things away from the donor class, so it’s been a no-go. Meanwhile the donor class is never going to support a party which acts against its interests. Getting enough votes and getting the support of wealthy elites are therefore mutually exclusive endeavors. You cannot have both. Dems will keep struggling with votes until they figure this out.

It is good that people are criticizing the Democrats’ garbage performance against a cartoon character opponent. But let’s not kid ourselves: as soon as they get Biden in the line is going to be “We’re doing fine; nothing needs to change. Biden beat the socialist and then beat Trump. Where’s brunch?”

Democrats ignored the left and courted Republicans instead under the mistaken belief that there are millions of Americans who want to coddle the rich, kill the poor, shit on disadvantaged groups and destroy the environment, but to do so with decency.

If Biden somehow fails to get in, the elites who installed him as the nominee are responsible for that loss. De enorme ploert Zuckerberg had het vorig jaar goed gezien, toen hij stelde dat Facebook in aanloop van de verkiezingen leugens van politici zal tolereren, terwijl hij daarvoor maar niet op kon houden te beloven dat Facebook elke bemoeienis met de verkiezingen op haar platform zou verwijderen. Sterker nog: hij ging zelfs zover om toe te geven dat Facebook door de Russen werd gebruikt om de verkiezingen van 2016 in de VS te manipuleren, dit middels zielige advertenties die wat betreft de financiële waarde totaal in het niet vielen bij de enorme bedragen waarmee bedrijven en de superwelgestelden hun presidentskandidaat ‘pluggen…..’
Alsof een aantal advertenties voor borsjt en wodka de VS burgers zover hebben kunnen krijgen dat ze op Trump stemden, terwijl ze dagelijks een hele berg stront geserveerd kregen waarmee de één dan wal de ander werd besmeurd als totaal onkundig voor het ambt van president…… En zie wat daarvan is gekomen: een psychopathische seksist en moordenaar met ronduit fascistische uitingen als president van het machtigste land op aarde, de VS….
Deze president die vooral regeert via Twitter was de klos toen men zijn Twitterberichten op waarheid ging controleren en concludeerde dat er geen barst van een paar van zijn berichten klopten en daarbij een waarschuwing plaatsten met links naar berichten uit de media…… Trump beweerde dat stemmen per post fruade in de hand werkt, terwijl daar nooit enig bewijs voor werd geleverd….. Nee, Trump heeft geen zin om alsnog zijn achterlijke uitlatingen te verdedigen als wel waarheidsgetrouw (wat hij niet kan, maar hij had minstens een poging kunnen doen…) Trump kiest ‘de strategie’ die bekend staat als: ‘de aanval is de beste verdediging…..’ Als hij wel had geprobeerd zichzelf te verdedigen was hij uiteraard zwaar door de mand gevallen, immers wat krom is kan je niet recht lullen, zelfs Trump niet en dat nog niet met duizend liter ontsmettingsmiddel, al dan niet geïnjecteerd……..
De Republikeinen die al lang stellen dat de sociale media vooral door ‘links’ worden misbruikt om hun partij onderuit te halen, wilden al langer nieuwe regels voor die media…. Weet niet hoe het hier zit, maar in de VS worden platforms als Twitter en Facebook niet gezien als publicisten, maar als een platform waar anderen berichten en andere zaken publiceren. Aan dat laatste wil Trump nu een eind maken, zodat deze platforms zich moeten gedragen als de eerste beste nieuwszender of krant en verantwoordelijk zijn voor wat er wordt gepubliceerd…. Wellicht denk je: wat is daarop tegen? Welnu meer dan genoeg, zo zullen deze platforms worden gedwongen om berichten van hun platform te halen als deze in strijd zijn met de belangen van de Republikeinse Partij*, of als zij schadelijk zijn voor (grote) bedrijven……
Natuurlijk hebben platforms als Twitter niet de kans om berichten dusdanig te brengen dat ze geen bewijs zijn voor een partij als die van de Republikeinen voor het herroepen wat men heeft geschreven, immers Twitter maakt die berichten niet….. Met andere woorden, gebruikers van platforms als Facebook en Twitter kunnen een grote golf censuur verwachten, daar de enige mogelijkheid die overblijft om vervolging te voorkomen zal bestaan uit het eenvoudigweg verwijderen van berichten…….
Het is nu al zo dat Twitter haar gebruikers waarschuwt voor berichten die aangeven waar het aan ontbreekt in de politiek, dan wel berichten waar politici aan de paal worden genageld voor onbeschofte voorstellen en bijvoorbeeld voor het zaaien van haat….. Zag gisteren op Twitter een waarschuwing voor een account van ‘Lieve Linkse’: ‘Caution: This profile may include potentially sensitive content. You’re seeing this warning because they Tweet potentially sensitive images or language. Do you still want to view it?’ Ongelofelijk, zeker als je ziet wat Lieve Linkse @LieveLinkse op Twitter zet, wat mij betreft redelijk gematigde kritiek, maar wel volkomen terechte kritiek!!
Je kan er de klok op gelijkzetten dat men ook in andere westerse landen naar mogelijkheden zal gaan zoeken, om niet welgevallige informatie in het geheel te blokkeren op platforms als Facebook en Twitter, terwijl men regelrechte geschiedvervalsing als een normaal gegeven ziet, als het maar in het voordeel is van de gevestigde neoliberale orde….. Over geschiedvervalsing gesproken: hoe is het mogelijk dat Facebook op verzoek berichten over mensen verwijdert, mensen die of e.e.a op hun kerfstok hebben, dan wel politici of anderen die ‘met pensioen zijn’, te gek voor woorden!! Overigens hebben zowel Twitter als Facebook accounts op hun platform gesloten vanwege het brengen van zogenaamd nepnieuws, ofwel nieuws dat ingaat tegen wat de reguliere (massa-) media brengen…… Dit terwijl juist deze media een enorme berg nepnieuws en zonder meer leugens hebben mogen publiceren op deze platforms, neem de leugens in aanloop van- en tijdens de illegale oorlogen die de VS alleen deze eeuw al is begonnen….
Het volgende bericht komt van Zero Hedge, dat overigens in rap tempo verandert in een rechts medium, waar men zelfs ronduit fascistische en racistische kritiek toestaat, zoals onder het bericht over de rellen in Minneapolis n.a.v. van de zoveelste politiemoord op de gekleurde George Floyd, overigens een bericht dat vol stond met alles wat de zwaar gefrustreerde gekleurde burgers aan schade hebben aangericht in Minneapolis, zonder de reden daarvoor te noemen: alle politiemoorden op gekleurde burgers in de laatste 20 jaar, zoveel dat bij elke moord op een gekleurde de vlam in de pan slaat (dat was en is te verwachten na elke politiemoord op een gekleurd mens….)…..
Trump To Sign Social Media Executive Order On Thursday After ‘Fact-Check’, Political Bias Exposed
Update (1830ET): Following up on earlier threats, a White House spokesperson has confirmed that President Trump will sign an executive order on Social Media tomorrow. Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany made the remark to reporters aboard Air Force One, traveling with Trump to Washington from Florida.
There are no details of what the order will contain, however, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) said today that he is working with Republican members of the House Judiciary Committee to craft legislation that would strip social media giants of their Section 230 legal immunity if they fact check content on their platforms, according to a copy of his podcast which Breitbart News exclusively obtained.

A lot of people don’t see that Facebook and Twitter … you see Twitter disadvantaging the president, they enjoy liability protections that are not enjoyed by your local newspaper or your local TV station, or Fox News, or CNN, or MSNBC. They have special benefits under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act as digital platforms because they’re not creating content for which they should be liable. They’re not making decisions about content, they’re simply saying come one, come all with your content. And as a consequence of that, they’re getting a bunch of protections.
And as Breitbart concludes,noting that the social media companies have become increasingly biased against conservatives, Gaetz questioned whether social media companies deserve to keep their Section 230 immunity.
All of which raises a serious question about the future of these social media giants under a more “media-esque” regulatory framework and points to an obvious line of attack in any executive order that President Trump could be considering.
Don Bongino tweeted a quasi-confirmation of this angle for the executive order:
“Twitter made a HUGE mistake. They have now injected themselves into a US election and decided to become editorialists, rather than a platform. ALL platform protections should be immediately revoked and Twitter should be treated as a publisher. They did this to themselves.”

Republicans feel that Social Media Platforms totally silence conservatives voices. We will strongly regulate, or close them down, before we can ever allow this to happen. We saw what they attempted to do, and failed, in 2016. We can’t let a more sophisticated version of that….

In the past we have seen Project Veritas expose the ‘fact’ behind the so-called ‘conspiracy theory’ of shadow-banning for conservative voices on Twitter.
A former Twitter software engineer who explains how/why Twitter “shadow bans” certain users:
Abhinav Vadrevu: “One strategy is to shadow ban so you have ultimate control. The idea of a shadow ban is that you ban someone but they don’t know they’ve been banned, because they keep posting but no one sees their content.”
“So they just think that no one is engaging with their content, when in reality, no one is seeing it. I don’t know if Twitter does this anymore.”
Meanwhile, Olinda Hassan, a Policy Manager for Twitter’s Trust and Safety team explains on December 15th, 2017 at a Twitter holiday party that the development of a system of “down ranking” “shitty people” is in the works:

And now, as Jonathan Turley details below, the latest controversy concerns the person who has said that he is in charge of “developing and enforcing Twitter’s rules,” Twitter’s “Head of Site Integrity” Yoel Roth. Critics have highlighted fairly extreme postings from Roth calling Trump and his supporters Nazis. I do not agree that the problem is Roth’s personal views or postings. The problem is his role and the rules at Twitter.
Roth has attacked Bernie Sanders supporters and proclaimed how he is working against Trump. He compared senior Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway to Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels. He has referred to Trump and his team as “ACTUAL NAZIS” and called Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., a “personality-free bag of farts.” As Fox noted, “last August, Twitter suspended McConnell’s Twitter account, prompting the GOP to threaten to cut off advertising on the site until Twitter relented.”
The attacks are numerous, raw, and offensive. However, conservatives calling for him to be fired or his tweets censored are reaching the wrong conclusion.
The problem is not Roth but his role. He has a right to express himself. I have no problem with Twitter hiring people with such political views and I believe it is a good thing for people to express themselves on social media. Indeed, we have discussed the free speech concerns as private and public employers punish workers for their statements or actions in their private lives. We have addressed an array of such incidents, including social media controversies involving academics. In some cases, racially charged comments have been treated as free speech while in others they have resulted in discipline or termination. It is that lack of a consistent standard that has magnified free speech concerns. We have previously discussed the issue of when it is appropriate to punishment people for conduct outside of the work place. We have followed cases where people have been fired after boorish or insulting conduct once their names and employers are made known. (here and here and here and here and here and here).
Roth’s comments highlight how bias is always a concern for those who take it upon themselves to decide who can speak or who must be “corrected” in communications with others. Twitter is notorious for a lack of consistency and coherence in the enforcement of its rules. However, regardless of such enforcement, there remains a core free speech issue in the regulation of speech. I recently criticized the calls of Democratic leaders like House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff for greater censorship of the Internet and social media. Such calls have been growing for years but leaders like Schiff are citing the pandemic as a basis for speech monitoring and censorship. Roth is merely the personification of the problem of such speech regulation. Again, the real problem is his role and Twitter’s rules.
As Summit News’ Paul Joseph Watson notes, Roth has been head of site integrity at Twitter since July 2018 and is responsible for “election security” and “misinformation,”meaning he almost certainly played a key role in the decision to ‘fact-check’ Trump’s tweets. In the meantime, We await Twitter ‘fact-checking’ false claims about ‘Russian collusion’ or any other of the erroneous issues pushed by the blue check mark brigade that have proven to be spectacularly wrong.

Toen bleek dat dit virus ‘wat meer was’ dan een verkoudheid, werd de schuld voor het disfunctioneren op dit dossier door de Trump administratie in eerste instantie aan China toegeschreven, maar bij uitblijven van vertrouwen bij het volk, wijt men nu haar falen aan machinaties van Rusland…..
‘Machinaties’ als een grote zending van Russische hulpgoederen aan de VS vanwege het Coronavirus, waarmee Rusland de presidentsverkiezingen in de VS zou manipuleren….. The Russians Get Blamed Again, but Who Is Really Subverting American Democracy?

April 16, 2020 “Information Clearing House” –It is perhaps inevitable that a major health panic like the coronavirus will have political ramifications based on whether those most affected by the illness will perceive that the government performed well or poorly in the crisis. The government for its part will engage in a blame game which seeks to place responsibility for what did not go well on an outside party. It should surprise no one to learn, for example, that Hindus in India have been blaming a Muslim group for the proliferation of the virus in their country, an accusation that has led to rioting and other violence directed against Muslims in general and which has produced some deaths.
In the United States blame for the health crisis has been more diversified and has been largely construed along existing political fault lines. Democrats are reasonably enough blaming President Donald Trump for the delays and failures to supply medical equipment while Republicans are seeking to exonerate the poor performance by the president, chiefly by editing the existing record to expunge Trump’s initial dismissal of the virus as little more than a common cold and even as a “hoax.” That refusal to recognize the severity of the epidemic cost the country several weeks at a minimum, time that might have been employed to get on top of the disease before it had a chance to gain a foothold.
More interesting perhaps is the apparent desire to find a foreign enemy as the source of the virus. That the virus originated in Wuhan is the majority view of the “experts,” though it is not clear if its genetics were the result of laboratory manipulation or were a naturally occurring mutation. And for its part, the Chinese government at a minimum was not particularly forthcoming when the virus began to spread in Wuhan and the surrounding province, failing to send an appropriate signal to the international community that a potentially highly contagious and lethal new virus had made an appearance.
In the U.S., Republican politicians and pundits, as well as the president, have exploited the uncertainty by persisting in calling the coronavirus the “Wuhan virus” or the “China virus.” There has also been considerable chatter about how Beijing is “to blame” for it, which, of course, intentionally shifts the narrative away from the actions or lack thereof by the American president. And so as not to ignore the real conspiracy theorists, there are also the stories now circulating about how the U.S. government helped fund research at the Wuhan Institute that involved bats, one of the possible sources of the virus. Additional theories being promoted by Rush Limbaugh and others promote the belief that the Chinese communists deliberately created and unleashed the virus to destroy western capitalism.**
It was perhaps inevitable that somehow Russia would eventually be brought into the preferred narrative to serve as a distraction that would derail the media’s 24/7 focus on the White House and its developing response to the virus. The Russian government’s shipment of a planeload of badly needed medical supplies to the United States several weeks ago notwithstanding, Moscow and President Vladimir Putin continue to be useful punching bags for both the national media and both parties in congress.
The latest tale from Yahoo news of Kremlin perfidy is also somewhat of a spy story, no doubt intended to enhance its appeal. It has not really caught on with the public yet because the panic over the virus has overwhelmed the news cycle, but there is still plenty of time to seek and find a foreign enemy who is wanting to do harm to the United States of America.
According to the news report, which is based on a paper prepared by analysts at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Russian intelligence officers are analyzing the U.S. response to the coronavirus pandemic to determine vulnerabilities in the American government’s procurement and emergency response system. The April 6th study, prepared by the DHS Counterintelligence Mission Center, states that the Russians are “likely are watching the U.S. response to the COVID-19 pandemic” as “intelligence collection on medical supply chain vulnerabilities could inform future operations aimed at weakening key logistical elements in preparation for a wartime attack, or opportunistically during an emergency.”
In other words, Moscow is looking for vulnerabilities in what amounts to America’s civil defense response capability in case it has to go to war with Washington. Given the lack of evidence confirming any desire on Vladimir Putin’s part to engage in a nuclear conflict with the United States that would likely destroy most of the planet, it is difficult to imagine that Russia is war planning in any serious way. But, according to some sources, a different picture does plausibly emerge from the Kremlin’s activity, which is that Russia is working to portray itself as a competent player in the war against the coronavirus while Donald Trump and his European counterparts are being seen as irresponsible fumblers.
Moscow has indeed been extending a hand to Europeans even as the Germans have been complaining about the White House conniving to steal their medical supplies. Several plane loads of medical equipment and more than 100 personnel flew to Italy a month ago. According to Italian sources, some of the Russians were intelligence officers making independent assessments of how effectively the Italians have been able to respond to the medical crisis.
All of that should surprise no one, as that is what intelligence officers do, though it does not necessarily mean that anyone is necessarily preparing for war. And the DHS report speculates wildly when it suggests that the coronavirus operation is part and parcel of “Russia’s ongoing 2020 election interference,” a largely undemonstrated hot button designed to make the hawks in congress swoon with pleasure.
If anyone is looking for Russiagate 2, this is exactly how it begins. Blame China, and if that does not seem to be working, look for the perfidious hand of Vladimir Putin, who clearly spends all day in his office dreaming up schemes whereby providing medical supplies to the U.S. and Europe is all part of some master plan to subvert the 2020 presidential election. But wait a minute, the ballot will feature Trump against Joe Biden. Putin is too late. The election has already been subverted.

Trump heeft intussen al zoveel over het Coronavirus gezegd en ‘getwitterd’, dat het zaak is deze meer dan achterlijke uitlatingen van deze psychopathische massamoordenaar niet te vergeten, zeker nu meer dan duidelijk is dat hij de Coronacrisis tot één van de onderwerpen van zijn herverkiezingscampagne gebruikt…… De megalomane rotzak heeft bedacht om de arme burgers in de VS $ 1,200.– te geven en heeft de cheque die deze mensen ontvangen laten voorzien van zijn handtekening….. En dan durft men in de VS nog steeds naar Rusland te wijzen als land dat de verkiezingen in de VS manipuleert….. (terwijl het juist de VS is dat al meer dan 100 jaar verkiezingen elders beïnvloed voor haar belangen in zo’n buitenland…..)
Aanvankelijk bagatelliseerde Trump de toestand rond het Coronavirus, het zou een griepje zijn waar de VS amper last van zou ondervinden, hij stelde zelfs dat rond half maart de ellende van het Coronavirus al voorbij zou zijn…… Toen de zaak toch ‘iets anders’ in elkaar bleek te zitten, gaf hij de schuld voor de virus uitbraak aan China, waarbij hij dit land ronduit demoniseerde en hij daarmee haat zaaide tegen VS burgers met Oost-Aziatische wortels….. Nu durft hij het imbeciele deel van zijn achterban wijs te maken dat wanneer zijn muur tussen de VS en Mexico al was gebouwd, het virus de VS niet binnen zou zijn gekomen….. Totaal belachelijk natuurlijk en ook daarmee zaait hij haat, maar nu tegen VS burgers die wortels hebben in Latijns-Amerika…….
Een paar dagen geleden nog liet Trump weten dat de VS binnenkort weer open kan, ofwel: ‘het moet afgelopen zijn met de sluiting van zaken en industrieën’, terwijl het aantal (ook dodelijke) slachtoffers in de VS blijft stijgen……
Voorts heeft Trump meermaals een tirade gehouden tegen het stemmen per post, belangrijk voor staten waar hij niet populair is en hij met zijn handelen mensen de keus geeft het virus op te lopen door te stemmen, of thuis te blijven en niet te gaan stemmen…..

Trump has made 356 false claims related to the coronavirus
During another week in which Americans across the country struggled for their lives and livelihoods, Donald Trump frittered away valuable time by obsessing over his image and the pandemic’s effect on his reelection prospects. When the country is most in need of a unifier-in-chief, Trump continues to sow discord and mine conflict whenever and wherever he deems it to be in his favor.
The Trump White House and its Republican allies seem determined to undermine subject matter experts at every turn, creating an intellectual vacuum that Trump attempts to fill with his political agenda rather than data and facts. The stories we’ve collected this week illustrate all this and create a stark picture of a president who is incapable of reining in his own temperament in order to do what’s best for this country and its people.
One of Trump’s newest attempts to distract from his poor leadership during the novel coronavirus epidemic is to threaten, in his words, to exercise his “constitutional authority to adjourn both chambers of Congress” in order to push through judicial and executive branch appointments without Congressional approval. In addition to being a flagrant attempt to pack vital positions with Trumpist allies during a nationwide health emergency, this newest announcement is a fundamental challenge to the separation of powers – and is supported neither by the Constitution nor by legal precedent.
This is far from the first time during this public health crisis that Trump has taken advantage of the nation’s turmoil to further special interests that he considers either important to his allies or to his campaign. Back in March, Trump tried to argue at a rally that the border wall with Mexico could have prevented the coronavirus, a claim for which there is no scientific evidence. This week, Trump took steps to weaken a rule forcing coal-fueled power plants to curtail their mercury emissions. The rule is a vital environmental protection that energy companies have been complaining about for years – and Trump is using this moment to make good on a pledge to these energy companies when he assumes few others are looking. Additionally, Trump has rejected an increase in air quality regulation standards, despite the mounting evidence that high levels of air pollution puts people at a higher risk for coronavirus.
One focus of Trump’s complaints this month has been the World Health Organization, and this week he made good on last week’s threat to revoke W.H.O.’s funding. Although he praised W.H.O. in February, the organization of health experts has become one of Trump’s favorite scapegoats as he has sought to diffuse blame for his bad leadership during the epidemic.
Trump’s normally reliable allies in the business community have begun to push back against his recent actions, particularly his moves towards prematurely opening the economy. On a call designed to curry favor with and establish his alliance with business leaders, Trump received significant skepticism and pushback for his overly aggressive timeline, making it seem unlikely that they will back him should he go forward with removing federal social distancing guidelines by May 1.
In an especially self-serving move that wasted valuable time in getting relief to millions, Trump made a deal with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to have his name printed on the coronavirus stimulus checks being sent to Americans, despite the fact that the president can’t be an official signer on Treasury Department checks. The Internal Revenue Service team in charge of dispensing the checks has had to race to print Trump’s name on the memo line, so Trump can use relief allocated by Congress as a campaign tool.
To conclude this week’s list, we’re going to leave you with the fact that since the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in the United States on January 20 through April 3, Trump has made 356 false claims related to the coronavirus. And in the two weeks since that date, which was also the date of this series’ first post, that number has only continued to grow. The limited actions Trump has actually taken to address the coronavirus crisis have been too few, too late; a new report suggests that had the U.S. acted to increase testing capacity nationwide two weeks earlier than he did, COVID-19 deaths could have been reduced tenfold.

Caitlin Johnstone schreef een artikel over deze zaak, waarin ze uitlegt hoe het mogelijk is dat we met 2 van dit soort kandidaten zitten, dus met Biden en Trump. Van de geheime dienst die van Sanders een Russische kandidaat maakte, tot de top van de Democratische Partij die o.a. in de vorm van Obama zelfs nog op de avond voor Super Tuesday de campagne van Sanders saboteerde….. Zo werden de plannen van Sanders voor onderwijs (o.a. studeren zo goed als gratis maken), een zorgverzekering voor elke inwoner van de VS en bestrijding van de enorme armoede in de VS, als een plan van een waanzinnige voorgesteld, het zou allemaal niet te betalen zijn……..
Het voorgaande terwijl men er geen probleem mee heeft dat de VS intussen: -meer dan 730 miljard uitgeeft aan oorlogsvoering, -kapitalen aan subsdie spendeert voor de winning van schaliegas en -olie, -de geldpersen constant aan heeft staan, om zo te pogen de aandelenkoersen op peil te houden…… Om nog maar te zwijgen over de gigantische hoeveelheden belastinggeld die naar grote bedrijven gaan, o.a. naar landbouw en veeteelt, steenkool winning en de kapitalen die worden gespendeerd aan wapenfabrikanten in de breedste zin van het woord….. Dan is er nog een hele berg aan belastinginkomsten verdwenen, daar de Trump administratie de belastingen voor grote bedrijven en de welgestelden fiks heeft verlaagd……
Hoe is het mogelijk dat de achterban van Trump maar in hem blijft geloven, waar hij hen intussen op enorme schaal heeft besodemieterd en in feite tegen hun belang handelt….. Daar is maar één antwoord op te geven: de reguliere (massa-) media in de VS hersenspoelen de bevolking dusdanig dat ze geloven belang te hebben bij kandidaten als Trump en Biden (2 psychopathische totaal-idioten van partijen die amper van elkaar verschillen, daar zou met Sanders als president een eind aan zijn gekomen dat is zeker, ook al zou hij veel tegenwind hebben gekregen)

How did we get to the point where the electoral contest to run the most powerful government on the planet is between a racist demented right-wing authoritarian warmongering rapist and another racist demented right-wing authoritarian warmongering rapist? How in the hell did this bullshit happen?
But the primary factor by far was domestic mass media propaganda. Propaganda during the primary season of course, with the billionaire press showing a very clear and undeniable bias against Bernie Sanders from the very beginning of the race. Had the Sanders campaign received a normal quality and quantity of mass media coverage for a candidate of his stature, he would doubtless have received far more support than he did. To deny that biased media messaging has an effect would be the same as denying that advertising, a trillion-dollar industry, has an effect.
But it goes so very much deeper than that. The influence of mass media propaganda upon the Democratic primary race was not limited to the propaganda that was employed during the actual contest; it’s been setting the foundation for it since long before that.
Without having been raised in a media environment that is saturated with establishment propaganda, it would never occur to anyone in a million years to describe a violent authoritarian extremist like Joe Biden as a “moderate”. It would never occur to anyone to think of this crazy wingnut as “electable”. It would certainly never occur to anyone that he should be running on the platform of what passes for America’s political left wing.
Joe Biden has been a horrible, evil politician since long before his rape allegations went mainstream and his brain started turning to porridge. If people could gaze with fresh, unmanipulated eyes upon someone who’s dedicated his entire political career to neoliberal exploitation at home and neoconservative mass murder abroad, someone who openly boasts about authoring the foundational documents of the USA PATRIOT Act, someone who promises rich donors that “nothing fundamentally will change” if he’s elected and who they know from experience can be taken at his word, it would never occur to them that this is someone who should be running for any elected office anywhere, let along within spitting distance of the most powerful one in the world.
It is only by the ability of the mass media to manufacture the illusion of normality that this bullshit has been made possible. The way the plutocratic class controls the mass media has given them the ability to persuade people to believe that freakish extremism is normal and healthy objections to oligarchic malfeasance is freakish extremism.
This is the case not just with this bullshit US presidential race, but with all bullshit everywhere. A world where powerful governments attack, destroy, starve and undermine weaker governments which refuse to bow to their interests, a world where the wealthy continue to steal more and more wealth from an increasingly impoverished working class and use the leverage that wealth gets them to steal more, a world where governments demand more and more opacity for themselves and more and more transparency from ordinary people, a world where police are becoming increasingly militarized and speech is becoming increasingly restricted, a world where the response to a global pandemic is not to rally together and overcome but to advance pre-existing authoritarian agendas and manufacture support for new cold war escalations against China.
None of this bullshit would have been possible without all of us having been raised in an atmosphere of mass-scale obfuscation and manipulation. None of us would ever accept such a world without having been manipulated into it, which is why they have done exactly that.
We will not collectively use the power of our numbers to force a change to this oppressive status quo until we can find some way to break free of our psychic bondage to the establishment propaganda machine, and we will not find a way to do that until we change something deep within ourselves about our relationship as a species to mental narrative.
But as things get increasingly weird and unpredictable, gaps will open up in our preexisting patterns. When patterns degrade to the point of unpredictability, anything becomes possible.
We are at an adapt-or-die point as a species, and we’ll need to break free of the bullshit to make the jump. Hell, we just might make it.

If that’s true, what would be the mechanism?
I asked a logical question and got a frightening answer:

I had to add an important addendum to the list I emailed earlier of ways the Right is trying to exploit this crisis to push their agenda and for their own political benefit.
As Aaron Black at the Washington Post pointed out today, Republicans are also enjoying that this crisis could cause problems for ballot access this year, and they’re trying to thwart efforts to make it possible for people to vote! Trump himself was clear that the motive is the same as the one that’s always behind the Right’s voter suppression efforts:
In an interview on “Fox & Friends,” Trump referenced proposals from Democrats in the coronavirus stimulus negotiations that would have vastly increased funding for absentee and vote-by-mail options. The final package included $400 million for the effort, which was far less than what Democrats had sought.
“The things they had in there were crazy,” Trump said. “They had things — levels of voting that, if you ever agreed to it, you’d never have a Republican elected in this country again.”

De vertrekkende republikeinse senator Scott Walker en zijn republikeinse deelregering willen de komende democratische senator Tony Evers diverse bevoegdheden afpakken, zodat deze zo goed als niets kan doen voor het grootste deel van de bevolking, die de laatste jaren werden getroffen door maatregelen die hen allesbehalve ten goede kwamen……. Sterker nog het maakt de senator afhankelijk van de republikeinse wetgevende macht………. Ofwel Evers zal als een ‘lame duck’ moeten ‘opereren’, zoals men dit daar noemt.
Eigenlijk kan je dit een ‘coup’ noemen, immers de gekozen senator Evers wordt vleugellam gemaakt. Een coup die de VS verder richting een totale dictatuur drukt, al moet gezegd worden dat de VS in feite al fungeert als een politiestaat……..

‘This Is a Coup’: Protests Engulf Wisconsin Capitol as Outgoing Scott Walker and GOP Move to Cripple Democratic Power

As Wisconsin Republicans voted to plow ahead with a sweeping package of legislation that would allow outgoing Gov. Scott Walker to strip significant authority from Democratic governor-elect Tony Evers, outraged Wisconsinites flooded the state capitol Monday night to denounce the GOP’s brazen attempt to subvert the will of the voters and “undo democracy itself.”
“This isn’t a bill. This is a coup,” Randy Bryce—aka the “Iron Stache”—said before Wisconsin’s Joint Committee on Finance, which deliberated and ultimately voted along party lines to advance the Republican plan, which seeks to transfer many of Evers’ crucial executive powers to the GOP-dominated legislature. A final vote on the plan is expected as early as Tuesday. Apparently lacking the courage to speak on behalf of their legislation—or fearing the immense grassroots backlash—the bill’s Republican sponsors didn’t bother to show up to the lame-duck hearing. “The only way they can pull this off is if nobody finds out about it,” Ben Wikler, another Wisconsin native and MoveOn.org’s Washington director, said at Monday night’s demonstration. “I was texting right before the show with some national reporters. They can’t believe people are coming out in this weather once they hear how cold it is. We’re proving them wrong right now. This is what democracy looks like.”
If approved by the state legislature, the Republican plan would force Evers to implement Wisconsin’s Trump-approved Medicaid work requirements, stop him from banning guns in the state capitol, and restrict both his ability and that of newly-elected Democratic Attorney General Josh Kaul to execute the state’s legal affairs. The GOP’s sweeping legislative package would also severely restrict early voting, limiting it to as little as two weeks before an election. Walker, who has just weeks left in office, told reporters on Monday that he would sign the legislative package if it reaches his desk. With governor-elect Evers vowing to pursue legal action if the plan passes the legislature, Wisconsin Democrats continued to voice their outrage at the GOP’s patently anti-democratic plan, which mirrors ongoing efforts by Republicans in Michigan to effectively overturn November’s election results. “You rig the system when you win and you rig the system when you lose,” Wisconsin Democratic state Rep. Alle verhalen over Russische manipulatie van verkiezingen zijn leugens, zo is intussen meer dan duidelijk geworden, echter de westerse (massa-) media en het grootste deel van de westerse politiek blijven deze leugen volhouden, immers als je een leugen dag in dag uit bij het publiek door de strot duwt, blijft deze bij een groot deel hangen als was het een waarheid als een koe…..
Professor Russische studies en politiek aan de Princeton University en de New York University (NYU), Stephen Cohen ziet het anders, volgens hem is er een kentering opgetreden en hij stelt daarbij dat juist door het hameren op die leugens, het publiek het vertrouwen en geloof in integere politiek verliest…. Ofwel de democratie zelf wordt aangetast met deze leugens en zoals in de kop gesteld het ondermijnt de democratie…….
Cohen bedoelt niet dat het (grootste deel van het) publiek doorheeft dat er wordt gelogen, echter de verhalen over de Russische bemoeienis richt bij dat publiek grote schade aan in het vertrouwen in de politiek…. Dit daar men zal denken dat zelfs al ‘één door de Russen gemanipuleerde of gestoken verkiezing’ zal leiden tot meer, ofwel ‘men heeft het manipuleren van de presidentsverkiezingen in 2016 niet kunnen voorkomen’, waarom dan nu wel?? Het is al zo zot in de VS dat men het ontbreken van bewijzen voor Russische bemoeienis, wordt gezien als een bewijs voor de manipulatie die Trump in 2016 het presidentschap in de schoot heeft geworpen….. ha! ha! ha! ha! ha!
Jammer dat Cohen niets zegt over de politiek en het gehalte aan democratie in de VS*, immers als je niet van het christelijk geloof bent, of je hebt niet de grote bedrijven met kapitalen achter je staan, kan je het als kandidaat in deze immer weer gekochte verkiezingen wel vergeten, om over alle leugens waarmee men elkaar bestookt voorafgaand aan de verkiezingen nog maar te zwijgen, waar men ook mensen inzet om het publiek via de sociale media (en uiteraard via de reguliere media) te bestoken met leugens en achterklap……… (en dan nog durven lullen over Russische inmenging……)
Ik moet zeggen dat ik het niet met Cohen eens ben, waar hij een intellectueel uit Moskou citeert dat Russisch autoritarisme** niet door de politiek wordt bepaald, maar door de genen (van het Russische volk)…. Je reinste kul, hetzelfde soort gelul als het verhaal dat alle Nederlanders op klompen lopen….. Democratie moet groeien, niet alleen in de politiek, maar ook in het individu en gezien er van democratie nog maar kort sprake is in Rusland (en deze als de democratie in de VS bepaald niet volmaakt is), kan je niet stellen dat mensen niet open zouden staan voor democratie. Het lullige is wel dat de Russen een hoop rottigheid zien in westerse ‘democratische landen’, dit doet de lust voor democratie op z’n zachtst gezegd geen goed…… (zie bijvoorbeeld hoe men in EU landen als Nederland met referenda is omgesprongen…..) Waar de macht van bedrijven, geheime diensten en terreurorganisaties als de NAVO over de westerse ‘democratieën’ niet vergeten moet worden…..

Who’s Really ‘Undermining’ American Democracy?
Allegations that Russia is still “attacking” US elections, now again in November, could delegitimize our democratic institutions.
Stephen F. Cohen, professor emeritus of Russian studies and politics at NYU and Princeton, and John Batchelor continue their (usually) weekly discussions of the new US-Russian Cold War. (Previous installments, now in their fifth year, are at TheNation.com.)
Summarizing one of the themes in his new book, War with Russia? From Putin and Ukraine To Trump and Russiagate, Cohen argues that Russiagate allegations of Kremlin attempts to “undermine American democracy” may themselves erode confidence in those institutions.
Ever since Russiagate allegations began to appear more than two years ago, their core narrative has revolved around purported Kremlin attempts to “interfere” in the 2016 US presidential election on behalf of then-candidate Donald Trump. In recent months, a number of leading American media outlets have taken that argument even further, suggesting that Putin’s Kremlin actually put Trump in the White House and now is similarly trying to affect the November 6 midterm elections, particularly House contests, on behalf of Trump and the Republican Party. According to a page-one New York Times “report,” for example, Putin’s agents “are engaging in an elaborate campaign of ‘information warfare’ to interfere with the American midterm elections.”
Despite well-documented articles by Gareth Porter and Aaron Maté effectively dismantling these allegations about 2016 and 2018, the mainstream media continue to promote them. The occasionally acknowledged lack of “public evidence” is sometimes cited as itself evidence of a deep Russian conspiracy, of the Kremlin’s “arsenal of disruption capabilities…to sow havoc on election day.” (See the examples cited by Alan MacLeod at FAIR.org.)
Lost in these reckless allegations is the long-term damage they may themselves do to American democracy. Consider the following possibilities.
Even though still unproven, charges that the Kremlin put Trump in the White House have cast a large shadow of illegitimacy over his presidency and thus over the institution of the presidency itself. This is unlikely to end entirely with Trump. If the Kremlin had the power to affect the outcome of one presidential election, why not another one, whether won by a Republican or a Democrat? The 2016 presidential election was the first time such an allegation became widespread in American political history, but it may not be the last.
Now the same shadow looms over the November 6 elections and thus over the next Congress. If so, in barely two years, the legitimacy of two fundamental institutions of American representative democracy will have been challenged, also for the first time in history.
And if US elections are really so vulnerable to Russian “meddling,” what does this say about faith in American elections more generally? How many losing candidates on November 6 will resist blaming the Kremlin? Two years after the last presidential election, Hillary Clinton and her adamant supporters still have not been able to do so.
We know from critical reporting and from recent opinion surveys that the origins and continuing fixation on the Russiagate scandal since 2016 have been primarily a product of US political-intelligence-media elites. It did not spring from the American people—from voters themselves. Thus a Gallup poll recently showed that 57 percent of those surveyed wanted improved relations with Russia. And other surveys have shown that Russiagate is scarcely an issue at all for likely voters on November 6. Nonetheless, it remains a front-page issue for US elites.
Indeed, Russiagate has revealed the low esteem that many US political-media elites have for American voters—for their ability to make discerning, rational electoral decisions, which is the bedrock assumption of representative democracy. It is worth noting that this disdain for rank-and-file citizens echoes a longstanding attitude of the Russian political intelligentsia, as recently expressed in the argument by a prominent Moscow policy intellectual that Russian authoritarianism springs not from the nation’s elites but from the “genetic code” of its people.
US elites seem to have a similar skepticism about—or contempt for—American voters’ capacity to make discerning electoral choices. Presumably this is a factor behind the current proliferation of programs—official, corporate, and private—to introduce elements of censorship in the nation’s “media space” in order to filter out “Kremlin propaganda.” Here, it also seems, elites will decide what constitutes such “propaganda.”
