VS ontwikkelt nieuw biowapen: genetisch gemanipuleerde insecten

Een team van wetenschappers verbonden aan Science Policy Forum (in de VS) luiden de noodklok over een ‘mysterieus’ overheidsprogramma om virussen te verspreiden met insecten…….

Pentagons Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) voert het programma uit en is niets anders dan, zoals gezegd, de ontwikkeling van nieuwe biowapens waarmee de VS de oogsten van haar onwelgevallige landen zou kunnen vernietigen en daarmee een verandering van regime (‘regime change’) zou kunnen afdwingen zonder één schot te lossen……. Dat er door dergelijke terreur een enorm aantal mensen zal overlijden, schijnt niemand in het Pentagon te deren………. (zoals gewoonlijk….)
Blijkbaar is honger tegenwoordig in de VS een geaccepteerd middel om oorlog te voeren, iets dat uitdrukkelijk als ernstige oorlogsmisdaad is opgenomen in het Verdrag van Genève…….. Vandaar ook dat de VS meehelpt aan de genocide die de Saoedische terreurcoalitie uitvoert op de sjiieten in Jemen, een genocide die niet alleen met grootschalige bombardementen op o.a. huizenblokken, ziekenhuizen, scholen (en schoolbussen), energiecentrales en waterbedrijven, gepaard gaat, maar ook met blokkades van de gebieden die de opstandelingen in handen hebben, zodat er maar mondjesmaat voedsel, water, medicijnen en andere humanitaire hulpgoederen de hongerende bevolking bereiken…… De VS helpt op zee mee aan de blokkade van door de Houthi’s beheerste gebieden…………….
Honger die in Jemen wordt aangevuld met een cholera en difterie uitbraak, opgeteld met de smerige terreur van Saoedi-Arabië heeft dit geleid tot de genocide die nu wordt uitgevoerd in Jemen…. Ofwel de VS, GB, Saoedi-Arabië, de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten, Egypte en Marokko gebruiken naast enorme militaire terreur, honger en ziekte om een volk uit te roeien………
Terug naar de genetische manipulatie van insecten: deze insecten kunnen ook gebruikt worden om virussen onder de bevolking van andere landen te verspreiden in een tempo dat nooit eerder is gezien…….. Helaas gaat Tyler Durden daar in zijn artikel dat eerder op Zero Hedge verscheen niet op in….

Scientists Sound Alarm Over Mysterious Gov’t Plan to Spread Viruses Using Bugs

(ZHE Op-ed) — A team of scientists sound the alarm in a new Science Policy Forum report about a mysterious US government program that is developing genetically modified viruses that would be dispersed into the environment using insects. The virus-infected or ‘Frankenstein’ insects are being developed as countermeasures against potential natural and engineered threats to the US food supply. The program is operated by the Pentagon’s Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) could be viewed as an attempt to develop an entirely new class of bioweapons that would prompt other nations to seek similar weapons, they cautioned.
The researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology and the University of Freiburg both in Germany, and the University of Montpellier in France suggest DARPA’s program could likely breach the Biological Weapons Convention, the first multilateral disarmament treaty banning the development, production, and stockpiling of biological and toxin weapons.
Dubbed the “Insect Allies” program, DARPA began modifying insects in 2017, with the plan to produce more resilient crops to help farmers deal with climate change, drought, frost, floods, salinity, and disease, said Gizmodo. The technology at the center of the program is an entirely new method of genetically modifying crops. Instead of modifying seeds in a lab, farmers would send swarms of insects into their crops, where the genetically modified bugs would infect plants with a virus that passes along the new resilience genes, a process known as horizontal genetic alteration. Hence the technology’s name—Horizontal Environmental Genetic Alteration Agents (HEGAA).
For HEGAA to work, Gizmodo explains that DARPA labs develop a virus that is inserted into the chromosome of a target organism. Scientists would use leafhoppers, whiteflies, and aphids genetically altered in the lab using CRISPR, or a variant of a gene-editing system, to carry the virus into crops. Each plant would then be infected by the insect, triggering the intended effects of protecting crops from natural and or human-made threats.

However, the lead author of the report, Richard Guy Reeves from the Department of Evolutionary Genetics at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology, says DARPA’s Insect Allies program is disturbing and an example of dual-use research in which the US government, in addition to aiding farmers’ crops, is also developing a biological weapon.

Insect Allies is reportedly backed by $27 million of funding. According to Gizmodo, there are four academic research teams currently working on the project, including researchers at the Boyce Thompson Institute in New York, Pennsylvania State University, Ohio State University and the University of Texas at Austin. DARPA maintains that “all work is conducted inside closed laboratories, greenhouses, or other secured facilities,” and that the insects have built-in lifespans to limit their spread. By 2020 or 2021, DARPA is planning on testing the virus-infected insects on crops inside greenhouses at undisclosed locations.

Reeves said the use of insects as a vehicle for genetic modification is a horrible idea because they cannot be controlled and indicates that traditional overhead sprays to deliver HEGAAs is the safest bet. DARPA says insects are the only practical solution, as overhead spraying of HEGAAs would require increased farming infrastructure — something that is not available to all farmers.
The report specifies how there is currently no global regulatory framework to support this new way of transporting HEGAAs to crops, which if not supervised correctly, could lead to potential mishaps.
The scientists of the report interpret DARPA’s insect program as “an intention to develop a means of delivery of HEGAAs for offensive purposes,” such as conducting biological warfare.
These genetically modified bugs could be implanted with a dangerous plant-killing disease that the Trump adminstration could unleash over farmland in Venezuela, Syria, Iran, North Korea, Russia, and or even China, that would decimate the countries’ food supply.
The introduction of this potentially dangerous technology, the scientists argue, would usher in an entirely new class of biological, insect-dispatched weapons that could be considered weapons of mass destruction. Scientists warn that this technology would spur rival nations to develop similar insect programs.
In response to a Gizmodo question, a spokesperson for DARPA said it welcomes academic dialogue about the Insect Allies program, but criticizes the conclusion of the report, saying it is “misleading and peppered with inaccuracies.”
Blake Bextine, DARPA Program Manager for Insect Allies, rejects many of the claims made by Reeves.
“DARPA is not producing biological weapons, and we reject the hypothetical scenario,” Bextine told Gizmodo.

“We accept and agree with concerns about potential dual use of technology, an issue that comes up with virtually every new powerful technology. Those concerns are precisely why we structured the Insect Allies program the way we did, as a transparent, university-led, fundamental research effort that benefits from the active participation of regulators and ethicists and proactive communication to policymakers,” said Bextine.
The purpose of Insect Allies program, he states, is to prepare for a new era of emerging threats to US agriculture. Brextine added that DARPA is evaluating the potential environmental impacts of HEGAAs.

“DARPA is extraordinarily sensitive to environmental risks and off-target effects, and has structured the Insect Allies program to identify and mitigate them,” he said. “DARPA has mandated multiple levels of biosafety and biosecurity at each stage of the program.”

If DARPA’s program succeeds, they will have developed gain-of-function treatments that can be delivered to the “right plants” and the “right tissue,” he said. In other words, DARPA wants precision guided biological weapon insects.
Jason Delborne, an Associate Professor at North Carolina State University, an expert in genetic engineering, says the concerns seem “appropriate.”

“The social, ethical, political, and ecological implications of producing HEGAAs are significant and worthy of the same level of attention as exploring the science underpinning the potential technology,” Delborne told Gizmodo.

“The authors argue persuasively that specifying insects as the preferred delivery mechanism for HEGAAs is poorly justified by visions of agricultural applications. The infrastructure and expertise required for spraying agricultural fields—at least in the U.S. context—is well established, and this delivery mechanism would offer greater control over the potential spread of a HEGAA.”

DARPA could be on the cusp of obtaining a new biological weapon that would most certainly be used against Venezuela, Syria, Iran, North Korea, Russia, and or even China, to cripple the countries’ food supply and lead to a regime change without firing a signal shot — this the future of warfare.

Duitsland doet mee in het koor van de wolven: Russische cyberterreur!

Schreef ik gisteren nog een bericht waarin ik stelde dat Duitsland nog enig tegenwicht biedt aan de anti-Russische propaganda*, kreeg ik dezelfde dag in het WDR nieuws van 13.30 u. het bericht dat ook Duitsland zich heeft aangesloten bij Nederland, Groot-Brittannië en de VS over de Russische cyberaanvallen….. Volgens de regering Merkel heeft Rusland zich meermaals schuldig gemaakt aan cyberaanvallen en dat op diverse landen, waaronder de VS……..

Geen schijn van bewijs, maar toch durfde de nieuwslezer namens de WDR nieuwsredactie te melden dat Nederland overtuigende bewijzen heeft geleverd voor de Russische spionage op de OPCW in Den Haag…. (alleen foto’s van Russische mannen in West-Europa zijn de laatste tijd al een bewijs van Russische schuld aan van alles en nog wat….)

Ook Merkel, als haar geheime diensten moeten weten dat er geen flinter aan bewijs is en toch doet men mee in het ‘koor van de wolven……’ Wat Merkel ook weet is dat de VS vorig jaar al heeft laten weten dat het een cyberaanval op haar overheid beschouwt als een oorlogsdaad en dat als zodanig zal beantwoorden, desnoods met de onmiddellijke inzet van kernwapens……

Geen EU staat heeft destijds bij de VS aan de bel getrokken deze gevaarlijke taal achterwege te laten, zeker daar de VS duidelijk doelde op het beantwoorden van een ‘cyberaanval’ begaan door Rusland…….. Alsof de Europeanen in blijde verwachting zijn van een kernoorlog………….. Het is dan ook duidelijk dat Merkel niet veel meer te vertellen heeft en in de tang wordt gehouden door politici van de CSU, politici die de regering dwingen mee te doen aan de demonisering van Rusland……..

Ik weet het, intussen een cliché op deze plek: waar wel overtuigende bewijzen voor zijn, zijn de cyberaanvallen van de VS, ook op haar NAVO partners in Europa. Godbetert Merkels eigen smartphone werd door de VS gehackt, overigens zonder noemenswaardige kritiek van de vorige Duitse regering of Merkel zelf……

Niet Rusland begint de ene na de andere illegale oorlog, of pleegt coups waar het haar uitkomt, of voert geheime militaire acties in diverse buitenlanden uit, of moordt er op los middels drones, waarbij meer dan 90% van de slachtoffers gvd niet eens verdacht werd, dus veelal vrouwen en kinderen…… Als die slachtoffers worden vermoord door een ander land dan de VS (het liefst een land waar de VS de pik op heeft), staat het EU parlement en die van de afzonderlijke lidstaten op de kop…..

De hiervoor besproken (oorlogs-) misdaden, die niet door Rusland werden begaan, worden gestaafd door ‘kubieke meters’ aan documenten (o.a. op WikiLeaks) en ‘kilometers’ aan videomateriaal, feiten die maar naar een terreurstaat wijzen >> de VS!! Het voorgaande klopt niet helemaal, ook de NAVO partners doen van harte mee aan een aantal uiterst onfrisse VS oorlogsmisdaden, maar ja, de NAVO is nu eenmaal een (terreur-) organisatie die in feite onder bevel staat van de VS……

Over de NAVO gesproken: ook de NAVO bemoeit zich met deze zogenaamde spionage zaak, spionage op een VN orgaan (de OPCW), terwijl diezelfde NAVO de VN schoffeert als het haar uitkomt, zoals bij commentaar van de VN op het handelen van de VS in diverse buitenlanden. Trouwens sinds wanneer bemoeit een militair bondgenootschap zich met deze zaken? Juist als men denkt e.e.a. uit te kunnen buiten en daarmee bijvoorbeeld de eigen macht te kunnen vergroten, of zelfs te kunnen gebruiken als aanleiding tot oorlog………

Een oorlog waar de NAVO al een paar jaar, bijna het jaar rond op oefent langs de grenzen met Rusland, nu schijnt er weer een grootscheepse oefening in Noorwegen aan de gang te zijn, een militaire oefening ter bescherming van de NAVO-EU-lidstaten terwijl het natuurlijk een oefening is op het binnenvallen van Rusland…… Niet voor niets ook dat er een groot aantal VS militairen deelnemen aan deze zoveelste anti-Russische oefening, waarmee men tevens de angst er in wil houden bij de bevolkingen van de Europese NAVO-lidstaten…… Angst voor ‘Russische agressie’, waarmee men haatzaait tegen dat land en daarmee draagvlak probeert te creëren voor een oorlog tegen Rusland……. (en dat lukt ‘wonderwel goed’, nogmaals alsof we in blijde verwachting zijn van een kernoorlog met Rusland, ofwel WOIII…..)

Cardiologen VS in de beklaagdenbank

Brasscheck TV kwam gisteren met een video over de medische wetenschap aangaande cardiologie. Volgens arts Sherry Rodgers is de huidige cardiologie in de VS gevaarlijk voor de patiënt.

Eerder werd hier al bekendgemaakt dat men jarenlang de vrouw heeft verwaarloosd als het gaat om cardiologie, men nam gewoon aan dat mannen en vrouwen lichamen wat dat betreft hetzelfde werken, echter dat bleek achteraf voor veel vrouwen een fatale vergissing……….

Voor het veroorzaken van een bijna wereldwijde crisis, die velen in diepe ellende heeft gestort en een groot aantal mensen zich het leven benam, is geen van de verantwoordelijke bankiers (of falende toezichthouders als CDA knurft Wellink) naar de gevangenis gezonden…… Deze banken en andere financiële instellingen werden zelfs met honderden miljarden aan belastinggeld op de been gehouden…….Terwijl de ellende voor een groot aantal slachtoffers van de bankencrisis nog steeds voortduurt, neem de tentsteden in de VS en alle daklozen daar die langs de kant van de straat leven…..

Gisteren publiceerde John Queally een artikel op Common Dreams waarin hij het nieuws gebracht dat een man in de VS, Robert Spellman, voor het meermaals stelen van sigaretten is veroordeeld tot 20 jaar gevangenisstraf………
Ten eerste is die man ziek, hij is namelijk verslaafd aan sigaretten, ten tweede leeft hij in ellendige omstandigheden, dus de motivatie om te stoppen met roken ontbreekt volledig en zonder geld blijft er dan maar één weg over om aan de benodigde verslavende stoffen te komen die zich in tabak bevinden (waarvan nicotine de minst schadelijke is….*)….
Moet je nagaan er zullen legio mensen in de VS zijn als Robert Spellman, mensen die door de bankencrisis in de financiële ellende zijn komen te zitten…… Zij worden bij een misstap wel gepakt en gevangengezet…….
De VS een rechtsstaat? ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! Aan dat ellende land, de grootste terreurentiteit op aarde, een land dat al lang de belangrijkste voorwaarden voor een rechtsstaat overboord zette, levert Nederland desnoods de eigen onderdanen uit………..

 Ten Years After Not One High-Level Banker Sent to Jail for Tanking Global Economy, This Man Gets 20 Years in Prison for Stealing Cigarettes

Ten years after the behavior of over-leveraged and fraudulent banks created a global financial disaster that resulted in hundreds of billions of dollars in losses; a multi-trillion bailout using public money; and millions of people losing their homes to foreclosure, but saw not one high-level financial executive go to jail, a man in Florida has been sentenced to a 20-year prison term for stealing $600 worth of cigarettes from a local convenience store.

 According to the Associated Press, “Robert Spellman, 48, received the lengthy sentence after a jury in Pensacola convicted him of burglary and grand theft last month.” As the Pensacola News Journal reports:

He went into the Circle K in the 200 block of West Cervantes Street and took 10 cartons of cigarettes from a locked manager’s office in the stock room.

 He was found nearby, matched a description of the suspect, was wearing the same clothing and had the cigarettes, according to the State Attorney’s Office.

 Spellman had 14 felony and 31 misdemeanor convictions prior to this charge, so his 20-year sentence qualifies him as a habitual felony offender.

While the average carton contains 200 cigarettes, that means Spellman will now serve approximately 3.65 days in prison for each of the 2,000 cigarettes he allegedly stole.

 Asked in 2016 about why no high-level bankers went to jail after the 2008 crash, former Attorney General Eric Holder lamented that reality by claiming the DOJ just coudn’t make the cases stick, though said he wished it had been possible:

Writing about the tenth anniversary of the 2008 crash last month in Rolling Stone, journalist Matt Taibbi noted that while “everyone in the upper echelon of the finance community got Paid In Full in the bailout, even the exact people who screwed up the worst,” those whose suffered most of the “miserable story turned out to be poor, nonwhite, and elderly.”

 Though it’s likely that most poor, nonwhite, and elderly Americans didn’t need to be told that.

Two Harsh Truths Any Effective Anti-War Movement Must Understand

(CJ Opinion) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has kicked off yet another round of “Iran is totally gonna nuke us any second now you guys” ejaculations. This is of course another demand that we accept unsubstantiated claims from a proven liar about another longtime target for neoconservative regime change, and I’d like to tap out a few thoughts about war and how to oppose it as pertains to the latest trend in neocon Iran shenanigans.
I’ve been writing about rape a lot these last few days, partly due to where I’m at in my personal rabbit holing and probably also partly because of where the zeitgeist is at with the Kavanaugh and Cosby stuff in the news. So since we’re already on the subject I hope people don’t mind if I kick off this piece with another rape analogy.
Until relatively recently, most people had a wildly different understanding of what rape is than how it actually tends to show up in real life. Even today, saying the word “rapist” tends to conjure up a very unrealistic image for many people: a stranger in a ski mask grabbing a female jogger and dragging her off into the bushes and leaving her severely injured, or something similar.
Because such an event is rare, there was a belief that rape itself was something rare; it didn’t say anything about the majority of rapes which don’t entail severe physical injury, or the rapes which are inflicted by acquaintances, friends, coworkers, partners, family members, prison mates, partners, exes and spouses. Rape is common, and, like murder, the perpetrator of a rape will most likely be someone the victim knows.
Just as our society is readjusting its understanding of what rape is and how it tends to happen, it is important for any antiwar movement to readjust its understanding of what war is and how it tends to happen.

In a 2006 article titled “The Vietnam Syndrome Mutates” by the neoconservative publication The Atlantic, the author discusses how after the Gulf War in 1991 Bush Senior crowed that “The specter of Vietnam has been buried forever in the desert sands of the Arabian Peninsula… By God, we’ve kicked the Vietnam syndrome once and for all!”
“Vietnam syndrome” was a term used to describe the reluctance of the US citizenry to sign off on direct military interventionism after that disastrous war, asking “Is this another Vietnam?” any time the subject of military action anywhere in the world came up. There was a hope among the pilots of the US war machine that the Gulf War had shown the American public that it could again begin trusting Uncle Sam with the responsibility to sign off on winnable, necessary military interventions at minimal cost that nobody would regret. And for a very brief period, until his son led the empire into another disastrous invasion in Iraq, the elder Bush was right. And then, as The Atlantic mourns, Vietnam syndrome mutated into Iraq syndrome.
And to this day those two disastrous wars remain the primary “Remember the Alamo” calls of the peace movement. Any proposal that looks like a conventional ground war is instantly opposed and rejected by war resisters in particular and the broader public in general, which is obviously a good thing, but it also means that people aren’t keeping their eyes peeled for less conventional acts of war which can be just as disastrous.
We are now at a strange juncture in geopolitical dynamics wherein anyone paying attention knows that China is scheduled to surpass the US as the dominant superpower before too long unless something drastic happens, and so the US-centralized empire is working frantically to tilt the world stage in its favor before then, but it needs to use a much softer touch than it would like because Iraq soured the public attitude toward war. General Wesley Clark once described how after 9/11 the Pentagon had planned to keep toppling non-compliant governments after Iraq, over five years following up Saddam’s overthrow with regime change wars in “Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and, finishing off, Iran.”
Iraq didn’t go as planned, but that didn’t deter the imperialists from their agenda, they just had to find another way to go about it. In order to get their regime change operation underway in Syria, for example, the empire flooded the nation with heavily armed terrorist factions and implemented what is possibly the single most sophisticated war propaganda campaign in human history to manufacture consent for more direct intervention. It implemented the same strategy against Libya with far more success. In both those interventions, longtime targets for regime change were attacked in a way which killed thousands upon thousands of people to advance imperialist agendas and destabilized the region in a way that has adversely affected the entire world, just as with Iraq. But, unlike Iraq, they didn’t involve full-scale ground invasions or conventional warfare.
Because of the loss of American life and the unwanted refugee crises which have ensued from US imperialism in Iraq, Libya and Syria, those interventions by the Bush and Obama administrations are aggressively condemned by populist right-wingers. But, because the populist right broadly supports the Trump administration, they remain largely blind to the fact that it is doing essentially the same thing to Iran that the Obama administration did to Libya and Syria. Forgiving and excusing this administration’s starvation sanctions(the only form of warfare in which it is considered acceptable and appropriate to target civilians with deadly force), escalated covert operations by the coup-staging sociopaths at the CIA, coziness with the MEK terror cult, and an elevation of virulent Iran hawks to the highest levels of his cabinet, right-wing populists sustain a narrative that this administration has a vested interest in peace, leaving only leftists, some libertarians, and what remains of the near-extinct antiwar Democrats to oppose this administration’s Iran warmongering.
I insist, as I always have, that if there’s ever to be an effective antiwar movement in the US it will necessarily involve a loose coalition of rank-and-file citizens from all across the political spectrum, but before that can happen there’s going to have to be an evolved understanding of what war is and how it operates.
We’re going to have to circulate the understanding that both of America’s mainstream parties are fully devoted to the agenda of war in all its forms, so just because you got someone into office whom you happen to like doesn’t mean you get to relax your antiwar vigilance or give anyone the benefit of the doubt.
And we’re going to have to circulate an understanding that war doesn’t always look like planes full of American soldiers unloading onto foreign shores and shooting at anyone who gets in their way. More and more, it’s going to look like a deadly combination of starvation sanctions, increasingly sophisticated psyops, CIA covert ops, empire-armed extremist factions (with funding often coming through opaque and unaccountable gulf state allies), a few airstrikes mixed in as needed, and extensive coordination with other branches of the empire like Israel.
In order to oppose something, you’ve got to understand how it works. The old ways of thinking aren’t serving us anymore. We need to expand our understanding.

Hoorde vannacht om 3.00 u. (CET) op BBC World Service radio dat Marty Balin, eertijds lid van de geweldige psychedelische (folk) rockband Jefferson Airplane en opvolger Jefferson Starship, is overleden op 76 jarige leeftijd.

Marty Balin, of eigenlijk: Martyn Jerel Buchwald, was één van de oprichters van ‘The Plane’ en is verder schrijver van een aantal nummers van deze band en later van Jefferson Starship.

Jefferson Airplane maakte een tijdlang deel uit van het verzet tegen de Vietnamoorlog en nummers van de band als ‘White Rabbit’ en ‘Somebody to Love’ (eerder: Someone to Love) waren nummers die veel voor dienstplichtige VS soldaten in Vietnam werden gedraaid op radiozender ‘Armed Forces Radio Service’. Veel van die dienstplichtige soldaten gebruikten stevig drugs, vandaar ook dat bands als JA vaak werden gedraaid op die zender. Daarover gesproken: die zender was onderwerp in de film Good Mornig Vietnam (uit 1987) gemaakt met Robin Williams in de hoofdrol, hij speelde diskjockey Adrian J. Cronauer.

Jammer dat Balin zich de laatste jaren graag in een driedelig pak kleedde, het misdadigers uniform van de 21ste eeuw……

Ach de muziek van Jefferson Airplane is gelukkig tijdloos, laat ik dat maar voor ogen houden.

De wapenindustrie in de VS is medeplichtig aan misdaden tegen de menselijkheid in landen als Jemen, waar in dat genoemde land zelfs een genocide wordt uitgevoerd onder verantwoordelijkheid van Saoedi-Arabië en de VS…….

De bom die een eind maakte aan het leven van 44 kinderen in een schoolbus, werd gefabriceerd door Lockheed Martin. Dit bombardement, gericht op een schoolbus en een markt waar de bus zich op het moment van inslag bevond, heeft hevige verontwaardiging uitgelokt in de VS, waar men eindelijk leek op te waken uit een comateuze slaap als het om de massamoorden in Jemen gaat. (intussen is het volk in de VS op dit onderwerp voor het overgrote deel alweer ingedut).
Het laatste geldt niet voor een flinke groep mensen die zich roeren op de sociale media, zoals Medea Benjamin en Nicolas J.S. Davies, de schrijvers van het hieronder opgenomen artikel dat werd gepubliceerd op Foreign Policy In Focus (FPIF).
De VS is de grootste wapenexporteur op de wereld en de wapenindustrie daar wordt gedomineerd door de volgende bedrijven: Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics en Boeing.
Van 1999 t/m 2009 gaf de VS het achterlijk hoge bedrag van 1.3 biljoen dollar (biljoen zoals wij dat zien) uit aan illegale oorlogsvoering, daarnaast gaf de VS in diezelfde tijd nog eens 1.8 biljoen dollar uit aan rollend, varend en vliegend oorlogstuig…….. Met dat enorme bedrag voert de VS niet alleen illegale oorlogen, waar haar belangen in het geding zijn, maar dat geld wordt ook gebruikt voor de meer dan 800 militaire bases die de VS als een kankergezwel over de wereld heeft opgebouwd……
En dan vindt de politiek in ons land dat we meer moeten uitgeven aan defensie uh oorlogsvoering, daar de VS klaagt over de ‘te geringe uitgaven’ aan oorlogstuig…… Waar niet vergeten moet worden dat de politici in de VS ook nog eens grootlobbyisten zijn van het militair-industrieel complex en hun baas bedienen wanneer ze schande spreken over de ‘geringe uitgaven’ aan oorlogstuig van de andere NAVO-partners….. (overigens ook een aantal politici van VVD, CDA, PvdA, D66 en CU zijn grootlobbyisten van de wapenindustrie, neem alleen al de keus voor de JSF, een straalvliegtuig dat naar de huidige normen niet eens als straaljager aangeduid mag worden…..)
Lees het volgend artikel waar Benjamin en Davies verder ingaan op de oorlogen die de VS voert en steunt. Jammer dat de twee vergeten zijn te melden dat het militair-industrieel complex niet alleen belang heeft bij oorlogsvoering, immers dat doet de winsten fiks stijgen, maar dat die oorlogen ook nodig zijn en gebruikt worden om nieuwe wapens en wapensystemen in de praktijk te testen…… Kortom wat proefdieren zijn voor de farmaceutische industrie, is de mensheid voor de massamoordenaars van de wapenindustrie……
Daarover gesproken: de top van de wapenindustrie zou terecht moeten staan voor het Internationaal Strafhof en dat wegens massamoord en genocide (zoals die in Jemen).

IN YEMEN AND BEYOND, U.S. ARMS MANUFACTURERS ARE ABETTING CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY

United States (FPIF) – The Saudi bombing of a school bus in Yemen on August 9, 2018 killed 44 children and wounded many more. The attack struck a nerve in the U.S., confronting the American public with the wanton brutality of the Saudi-led war on Yemen. When CNN revealed that the bomb used in the airstrike was made by U.S. weapons manufacturer Lockheed Martin, the horror of the atrocity hit even closer to home for many Americans.
But the killing and maiming of civilians with U.S.-made weapons in war zones around the world is an all too regular occurrence. U.S. forces are directly responsible for largely uncounted civilian casualties in all America’s wars, and the United States is also the world’s leading arms exporter.
Pope Francis has publicly blamed the “industry of death” for fueling a “piecemeal World War III.” The U.S. military-industrial complex wields precisely the “unwarranted influence” over U.S. foreign policy that President Eisenhower warned Americans against in his farewell address in 1961.
The U.S. wars on Afghanistan and Iraq and the “global war on terror” served as cover for a huge increase in U.S. military spending. Between 1998 and 2010, the U.S. spent $1.3 trillion on its wars, but even more, $1.8 trillion, to buy new warplanes, warships, and weapons, most of which were unrelated to the wars it was fighting.
Five U.S. companies — Raytheon, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and General Dynamics — dominate the global arms business, raking in $140 billion in weapons sales in 2017, and export sales make up a growing share of their business, about $35 billion in 2017.
In a new report for Code Pink and the Divest from the War Machine campaign, we have documented how Saudi Arabia, Israel, and Egypt have systematically used weapons produced by these five U.S. companies to massacre civilians, destroy civilian infrastructure, and commit other war crimes. The bombing of the school bus was only the latest in a consistent pattern of Saudi massacres and air strikes on civilian targets, from hospitals to marketplaces, and U.S. arms sales to Israel and Egypt follow a similar pattern.
U.S. laws require the suspension of arms sales to countries that use them in such illegal ways, but the U.S. State Department has an appalling record on enforcing these laws. Under the influence of Acting Assistant Secretary of State Charles Faulkner, a former lobbyist for Raytheon, Secretary Pompeo falsely certified to Congress that Saudi Arabia and the UAE are complying with U.S. law in their use of American weapons.
The U.S. sells weapons to Saudi Arabia and other allies to project U.S. military power by proxy without the U.S. military casualties, domestic political backlash, and international resistance that result from direct uses of U.S. military force, while U.S. military-industrial interests are well-served by ever-growing arms sales to allied governments.
These policies are driven by the very combination of military-industrial interests that Eisenhower warned Americans against, now represented by Secretary Pompeo, Acting Assistant Secretary Faulkner, and a cabal of hawkish Democrats who consistently vote with Republicans on war and peace issues. They ensure that the “war party” always wins its battles in Congress no matter how catastrophically its policies fail in the real world.
Republicans derided President Obama’s doctrine of covert and proxy war as “leading from behind.”But the Trump administration has doubled down on Obama’s failed strategy, surrendering even more power over U.S. policy to foreign clients like Saudi Arabia, Israel, and Egypt, and to the “unwarranted influence” of the U.S. military-industrial complex.
Lockheed Martin is earning $29.1 billion in sales from the $110 billion Saudi arms package announced in May 2017, a deal struck as the war on Yemen was already killing thousands of civilians. Yet no conflict of interest is too glaring for Lockheed executives like Ronald Perrilloux Jr., who has taken part in public events to promote the war and defend Saudi Arabia and its allies, arguing that the U.S. should “help them finish the job” in Yemen.
Not to be outdone, Boeing, the second largest arms producer in the U.S. and the world after Lockheed Martin, has also been linked to the deaths of hundreds of civilians in Yemen. Fragments of Boeing JDAM bombs were found in the debris of a 2016 attack on a marketplace near the Yemeni capital of Sana’a that killed 107 civilians, including 25 children. Human Rights Watch found that the airstrike caused predictably indiscriminate and disproportionate civilian deaths, in violation of the laws of war, and called for a suspension of arms sales to Saudi Arabia.
To profit from wars on some of the poorest, most vulnerable people in the world, from Yemen to Gaza to Afghanistan, Raytheon, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and General Dynamics have developed a business model that feeds on war, terrorism, chaos, political instability, human rights violations, disregard for international law, and the triumph of militarism over diplomacy. Real diplomacy to bring peace and disarmament to our war-torn world poses the most serious “threat” to their profits.
But the American people have never voted to funnel the largest share of our taxes into endless war and ever-growing profits for the “industry of death.” It is time for the sleeping giant, what President Eisenhower called “an alert and knowledgeable citizenry,” to wake from its slumber, take responsibility for our country’s foreign policies and act decisively for peace.

‘Scheefwoners’ worden in het plan van Ronnes (CDA Tweede Kamer) volkomen onterecht nog harder gepakt met mega huurverhogingen……

Vanmorgen werd bekend gemaakt dat CDA lid Erik Ronnes, Kamerlid van het CDA, de ‘christelijke’ partij die zitting heeft in het afbraakkabinet Rutte 3, ‘scheefwoners’ nog harder wil pakken dan het tot nu toe heeft gedaan………

Men wil scheefwoners in één keer het volle pond laten betalen voor een huis dat qua huurwaarde niet eens een kwart van die huurprijs zou rechtvaardigen……

CDA volksverlakker Erik Ronnes is de initiatiefnemer van dit onzalige en uiterst onrechtvaardige plan. Ronnes was vanmorgen op zowel BNR als Radio1 te horen. Na 7.30 u. sprak hij bij BNR over deze zaak en noemde o.a. het grote tekort aan sociale huurwoningen, waar de schoft wel zo leep was niet te stellen dat het tekort aan deze woningen wordt veroorzaakt door scheefwoners. Naast het woord scheefwonen had Ronnes de mond vol van marktconforme huren en sociale huurwoningen…..

Nee, het CDA, de VVD, de PvdA, D66, ‘Christen’Unie, GroenLinks en lokale suffe partijen, hebben de wethouders geleverd die de laatste 30 jaar een enorme hoeveelheid (goede en goedkope) sociale huurwoningen hebben laten slopen, daar veel te dure ‘sociale huurwoningen’ en koopwoningen voor terug hebben laten bouwen en dat ook nog eens in veel lagere aantallen….. Verder hebben ministers (vooral onder de Rutte kabinetten) de woningcorporaties gedwongen grote aantallen sociale huurwoningen te verkopen aan (buitenlandse) investeerders, niet zelden beursgenoteerde bedrijven……. Het is al zo zot dat er op de radio reclame wordt gemaakt voor het investeren in die bedrijven, daar er grote rendementen zijn te halen……

Uiteraard zijn de huurders de klos, zij moeten ‘markt conforme huren’ betalen, huren die worden gerelateerd aan de achterlijk hoge prijzen voor koophuizen, ofwel op basis van de door de overheden en banken gecreëerde en in stand gehouden huizenbubbel…. Intussen betalen de meeste huurders meer voor hun veelal niet geïsoleerde huizen, die bovendien voor het merendeel in achterstandswijken staan, dan kopers maandelijks voor hun huis kwijt zijn…….

De huizenprijs is bovendien ook gebaseerd op een achterlijk hoge grondprijs, een prijs die wethouders ertoe heeft aangezet zelf grondspeculant te spelen….. Zo ben je voor de grond van een huis dat 50 vierkante meters telt, in de directe nabijheid van een industrieterrein in Den Haag, 5 kilometer vanaf het centrum, al € 50.000,– aan gemeente Den Haag kwijt…….

Waarom zouden huurders niet in hun huis mogen blijven wonen waar ze zelf voor gekozen hebben, ook al gaan ze meer verdienen? Een huis wordt immers in principe gebouwd voor het leven van de bewoner(s). Waarom worden kopers niet gepakt die in het verleden voor een grijpstuiver een huis kochten? Ook deze kopers kunnen een inkomen hebben dat al lang niet meer in verhouding staat tot het inkomen dat ze hadden op het moment van de koop…..

Als huurder heb je in feite geen rechten meer, zelfs blijven wonen in het huis van je keus mag niet meer en als je overlijdt, moeten je nabestaanden binnen een paar weken het huis leeghalen en dat door nabestaanden die hun verdriet verwerken…… Mocht je een paar wietplanten hebben als huurder, is dat voldoende om op straat te worden gezet, terwijl kopers die hetzelfde doen gewoon in hun huis kunnen blijven wonen…… Terwijl je zoals nogmaals gezegd, als huurder NB meer kwijt bent per maand dan een koper…..

Ronnes begon nog over de inkomensafhankelijke huur, volgens hem geen succes….. ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! Dat moet hij de huurders maar eens vertellen, die ondanks een karig inkomen alsnog meer dan 600 euro per maand moeten betalen…….. Een bedrag dat de 30% van hun inkomen ver te boven gaat >> die 30% van het inkomen zou iedereen moeten betalen voor een dak boven het hoofd, zelfs de SP is het daarmee eens…… Ga maar na wat je overhoudt van een inkomen rond de € 1.200,– per maand, als daar meer dan € 400,– per maand aan huur afgaat, terwijl daar verder nog de kosten zijn van diverse belastingen, de zorgpremie, gas en licht en levensonderhoud…. Opvallend dat de mensen die beslissen dat dit rechtvaardig is, zelf veel meer verdienen dan anderhalve ton per jaar……

Dan nog is het zoals gezegd bijzonder vreemd dat mensen meer voor hun huis moeten betalen dan het waard is. Zo betalen veel huurders een topprijs voor een huis van meer dan 30 jaar oud, een huis dat niet zelden al twee keer is afbetaald met de in totaal betaalde huur…… Zet dat eens af tegen kopers die met een normale hypotheek na 30 jaar hun huis hebben afbetaald, als Ronnes zou pleiten deze mensen 30% van hun inkomen te laten betalen voor hun onderdak, zou het land te klein zijn voor de enorme ophef die dat zou geven……

N.a.v. het voorgaande zou ik scheefwoners het dringende advies willen geven zich te organiseren en de regering voor het gerecht dagen wegens discriminatie, uitbuiting, leugens, haatzaaien en het voeren van wanbeleid op het gebied van de woningmarkt! Een rechtszaak die desnoods tot in het Europese gerechtshof dient te worden uitgevochten. Eén van deze punten, het haatzaaien tegen scheefwoners is best belangrijk, immers met praatjes als die van CDA plork Ronnes wordt ook nog eens haat gezaaid bij huurders die op wachtlijsten staan, haat tegen deze zogenaamde scheefwoners, die onterecht in een goedkoop huis zouden blijven wonen…… Schunnig!! (alleen daarvoor zouden figuren als Ronnes strafrechtelijk vervolgd moeten!)

Zoals al vaker op deze plek gesteld: de hoogste tijd voor een groot onafhankelijk strafrechtelijk onderzoek naar het woningbouwbeleid, met extra aandacht voor de huurhuizen….. Figuren als VVD hufter Blok zouden strafrechtelijk moeten worden vervolgd vanwege de dwang die ze op woningcorporaties uitoefenden hun sociale huurwoningen te verkopen! Ook het grote graaien van de Rutte kabinetten uit de door de huurders gespaarde gelden middels de verhuurdersbelasting, zou tegen het licht moeten worden gehouden. Datzelfde geldt overigens voor de hiervoor aangehaalde wethouders, die als de landelijke politiek, willens en wetens de woningnood hebben laten oplopen en zelfs deels hebben gecreëerd…….

9/11 getuigen totaal genegeerd door media (en overheid)

Brasscheck TV bracht gisteren weer een video over de 9/11 aanslagen in 2001.
Hoewel vaker ter sprake gebracht, een video over de honderden getuigen van die aanslagen die door de reguliere (massa-) media en de overheid werden genegeerd. Getuigen die allen precies hetzelfde vertelden: dat ze een flink aantal explosies hoorden tijdens ‘de aanslagen’ op de Twin Towers en WTC gebouw 7…….
Wel geeft dit weer een nieuwe kijk op de zaak, blijkbaar werden de media al heel snel ingeseind geen aandacht aan dergelijke getuigenissen te geven en ‘zoals het fatsoenlijke en onafhankelijke media dan betaamd’, volg je netjes de instructies van de overheid, je bent er immers niet om de waarheid te vertellen, maar ‘de waarheid’ te verkondigen zoals die door de overheid wordt aangeleverd……

De redactie van Brasscheck spreekt over censuur waar men het woord zelfcensuur had moeten gebruiken voor de media, die de officiële leugens als waarheid brachten en nog steeds brengen….. Immers die zogenaamde censuur wordt ook buiten deze zaak veelvuldig gehanteerd door de bedoelde media, waar ook de superrijke eigenaren-plutocraten en aandeelhouders-investeerders van die media belang hebben bij volgzame media, die vooral hun belangen moeten behartigen…..
Zoals we deze praktijken al zo vaak hebben gezien, neem alleen al de illegale oorlogen van de VS tegen Irak, Libië en Syrië, waaraan voorafgaand en tijdens die oorlogen de ene leugen na de andere werd en wordt gelanceerd, waar de media deze leugens hebben uitgedragen en uitdragen als was het via een grondig onderzoek verkregen informatie……. Moet je nagaan, diezelfde media hebben de bek vol van ‘fake news’ (nepnieuws) op de sociale media….. ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha!

 Men spreekt ook in de reguliere media en politiek over complottheorieën als men het over dit soort berichten heeft, terwijl de echte complottheorie aangaande 9/11 door de VS overheid werd gelanceerd! (en zoals gezegd herhaald door de reguliere westerse media en het grootste deel van de westerse politici) Voor het feit dat 9/11 minstens door de VS zelf werd geregisseerd en het officiële verhaal een vette leugen is, liggen intussen meters aan dossiers, zie o.a. de links onderaan dit bericht.

Armoede is niet op te lossen met ‘positief denken’

Al een paar jaar wordt er in ‘links-liberale’ en neoliberale kringen gesuggereerd dat positief denken mensen uit de armoede kan trekken…… Een ‘lekker gevoel gedachte’, waarmee men de smerige handen schoonwast en weer snel aan de prosecco gaat, of de nog meer welgestelden onder hen aan de champagne gaan.

 Uiteraard is dat positivisme gelul van een dronken aardbei, hetzelfde geldt voor het verhogen van de tabaksprijs, waar men doodleuk beweert dat arme mensen zullen stoppen met roken en zo geld zullen besparen, iets dat uiteraard niet zal gebeuren. Om te kunnen stoppen met roken moet je goed in je vel zitten en niet in diepe financiële ellende, dat smoort elke motivatie om te stoppen in de kiem….

Intussen is de tabaksprijs op een schunnig hoog niveau, waar de pleitbezorgers van prijsverhogingen worden gelogenstraft met het feit dat het aantal rokers al een paar jaar gelijk blijft en veel rokers onder de radar blijven, daar ze illegale (goedkope) sigaretten roken….. (bij elke prijsverhoging verdient de georganiseerde misdaad kapitalen extra aan sigarettensmokkel en het fabriceren van tabak buiten overheidstoezicht… Zo zijn er in Nederland al 2 illegale sigarettenfabrieken gesloten…)

 Let wel: het gaat bij rokers om een verslaving, door artsen en wetenschappers aangeduid als een ziekte….. Deze chronisch zieken hebben vanwege de financiële problemen geen controle over hun leven, iets dat wordt versterkt door de volgende zaken: -werkloosheid (ook met een te hoge leeftijd, wat al begint na het 45ste levensjaar), –chronische ziekten, -invaliditeit of -een veel te laag pensioen, waardoor deze groepen bij god niet weten hoe ze de volgende dag de touwtjes weer aan elkaar moeten zien te knopen……
Lees het volgende artikel en laat je nooit weer wijsmaken dat je met positiviteit de wereld kan veranderen, helaas een lullig sprookje en waar welgestelden denken deze onzin op te kunnen leggen aan degenen die aan de grond zitten, zou je deze welgestelden moeten vervolgen voor oplichting en haatzaaien (tegen die arme mensen…)….. Immers als je een dergelijk idee oppert stel je meteen dat arme mensen zelf schuldig zijn aan hun armoede en te bedonderd zijn om iets van hun leven te maken, terwijl ze nu en later de middelen eenvoudig niet hebben om uit de stront te komen!
Intussen hoop ik dat dit soort welgestelde figuren en anderen die deze leugen verspreiden, zelf geheel aan de grond komen te zitten (en er nooit weer uitkomen) en dan de rest van hun leven met dit soort ‘positieve’ kul worden bestookt…. Deze figuren vind je in het bedrijfsleven, de politiek >> veel VVD, CDA, D66, CU en SGP politici, voorts onder de ‘journalisten’ van regeringsgetrouwe reguliere media, die deze smerige leugens helpen verkondigen…….

 Om terug te komen op het begin van dit bericht: de welgestelden hebben wel belang bij positief denken, daarmee kunnen ze hun schuldgevoel over de financiële ellende bij de grote onderlaag wegwerken en hun handen in onschuld wassen…….. Waar de welgestelden op jaarbasis nog steeds rond de 20 miljard euro aan belasting ontduiken, geld waarmee je het arme deel van de bevolking wel ‘positief’ kan beïnvloeden…… (het arme deel van de bevolking bestaat in Nederland uit zo’n 4 miljoen mensen die tegen, op, of onder de armoedegrens moeten leven……)

To say that poor people don’t have enough hope, tenacity and aspiration is to deny their agency as well as the size of the structural odds they face.
(OD Op-ed) — In a recent article in the New York Times, the development economist Seema Jayachandran discusses three studies that used Randomised Controlled Trials (or RCTs) to understand the benefits of enhancing the self-worth of poor people. Despite wide differences in context, all the cases explore the viability of ‘modest interventions’ to ‘instill hope’ in marginalised communities, concluding that ‘remarkable improvements’ in the quest for poverty reduction are possible.
One of the studies from Uganda, for example, argues that “a role model can have significant effects on students’ educational attainment,” so the suggestion for policy-makers might be “to place more emphasis on motivation and inspiration through example.” Another case study of sex workers in Kolkata Brothels argues that “psychological barriers impede such disadvantaged groups from breaking the vicious circle and achieving better outcomes in life,” so small but effective changes that address these psychological constraints can alleviate the effects of poverty and social exclusion.
The underlying theme of these studies is that individuals can surmount the structural challenges of poverty through their own efforts using tools like ‘effective role models,’ the generation of ‘more hope,’ and the ‘improvement of their mental health.’ Positive psychology of this kind and an emphasis on behavior change to meet the goals of individuals have been around at least since the 1950s, first in the popular literature of self-help books and now in academia, where they form part of an increasingly fashionable trend to ‘do poverty reduction differently.’
The push for rebranding refugees as ‘entrepreneurs’ follows the same logic. In the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and TEDx hosted an event to showcase the personal narratives of refugees. The resulting talk was designed to highlight the role of positive thinking in overcoming adversity, with the harsh realities of being a refugee and resorting to extreme survival skills portrayed through the lens of individual motivation. The implicit assumption was that positive attitudes could determine better opportunities in life.
This trend relies on RCTs as the key methodological tool to prove its case, a technique born out of an increasing focus in economics on the behaviour of individuals and the use of computing power to process enormous amounts of data in econometric analyses. RCTs are supposed to provide “evidence-based” answers that form a scientific basis for policy-making. In reality however, they have some serious limitations.
An RCT is an evaluation technique that draws from experimental design in order to measure the impact of a development project. As the name suggests, the process is based on a selection of a ‘random’ or unspecified distribution of people or communities who are subjected to a trial or an experiment. The proponents of this method suggest that it is possible to measure the impact of an intervention and attribute a causal relationship between the intervention and its outcomes when compared to a ‘control group’ who are not included—a worrying feature in and of itself because people in that group may be denied the essentials of a decent life if they are only provided to those who participate in the trials.
According to Esther Duflo, the top five journals in economics published 21 articles on development in 2000, none of which represented this methodology; by 2015 there were 32 such articles, of which 10 were RCTs. Researchers Sophie Webber and Carolyn Prouse go so far as to say that RCTs have become the new ‘gold standard’ in development economics, so it comes as no surprise that poverty has started to be studied in the context of this new framework.
Poverty alleviation, however, is a hugely complex subject that touches on the strengthening of institutions, the health of governance, the structure and dynamics of markets, the workings of social classes, macroeconomic policies, distribution, international integration and many other issues, none of which can be replicated from one context to another. That means that analyses of poverty have to be based on a critical examination of processes and actors that cannot be ‘controlled’ against—thus violating the principle of RCTs.
Recent developments in economics have failed to account for these fundamental determinants of poverty. Instead, the success of RCTs can be narrowed down to essentially statistical arguments that seek to identify ‘what works’ and ‘which interventions’ should therefore be employed to improve the lives of the poor. In such processes, the focus tends towards the individual or the household and (initially at least) to the design of small changes that are supposed to enable them to exit poverty, although eventually the ‘scaling up’ of interventions might also occur. Akin to the ‘nudge’ approach that has been popularised by Cass Sunstein and Richard Thaler, the idea is that people’s choices can be shaped to allow them to escape from poverty and dispossession.
As a consequence, this approach individualises the ‘problem’ of poverty whilst failing to acknowledge, contextualize, highlight or analyse the structures, institutions and actors that actually make and keep some people poor. For example, the idea that role models can be effective in changing people’s behaviour, emotions and self-concepts isn’t new; what’s new is the belief that these aspirations can lift people out of poverty without broader changes in politics, social structures and institutions. Returning to the brothels of Kolkata, advocating for the removal of psychological barriers may not be effective if the working conditions of sex workers and the structures on which their material deprivation stands continue to go unchallenged.
To be fair, The York Times piece introduces some important caveats to such strategies:

“Hope isn’t a cure-all and in none of these examples can we be certain that it actually explains the gains in people’s income or education…instilling hope without skills or financial resources is unlikely to be enough to lift people out of poverty.”

Nevertheless, if the caveats are so strong as to question the validity of the experiments then they are not caveats at all, but fundamental inputs on which any successful methodology must be based. Economics distracts itself by reforming symptoms and ignoring the conditions which cause the malaise in the first place. As the development economist Sanjay G. Reddy has written:

“The larger questions once asked within the discipline regarding the effect of alternative economic institutions and policies (such as those concerning property arrangements, trade, agricultural, industrial and fiscal policy, and the role of social protection mechanisms), for instance, and the impact of political dynamics and processes of social change, have been pushed to the background in favour of such questions as whether bed-nets dipped in insecticide should be distributed free of charge or not, or whether two schoolteachers in the classroom are much better than one.”

Hence, in a recent open letter published in the Guardian, fifteen leading economists argued that relying on RCTs to guide aid spending will lead to short-term, superficial and misplaced policies. Asking relevant questions is the first step towards understanding problems. And understanding why widespread hunger and poverty persist in an era of unprecedented opulence, rapid technological transformation and democratic governance is the most important problem of the day. Inequality is not born in a vacuum; it is a fundamental aspect of the distribution of income and wealth. Unless we understand how extreme wealth accumulation is connected to extreme inequality the question of poverty will go unaddressed.
More than 800 million people live in extreme poverty today. To say that they do not have sufficient hope, aspiration and tenacity to fight for their rights is to deny their agency. The structural odds against them inhibit their ability to leave the vicious cycles of poverty. Without additional resources and much more concerted action on the underlying causes, no amount of positive thinking will enable the great mass of individuals to climb out of poverty. We cannot afford to rely on methods that suggest that poor people are simply failing to make the ‘right choices.’
This doesn’t mean that we should disregard RCTs or any other ways of empowering communities, but it does mean that we should build on an understanding of poverty alleviation which is concerned with attacking the malaise of unequal distribution as opposed to remediating its symptoms. That means confronting structures and actors that have not only failed to address poverty but may also have reinforced the nature of uneven development across the globe.
